do not take this class with this professor!!! she is very unclear about her assignments and does not give alot of help. she is a very difficult grader! you have to do a lot of work!
Doran is awesome!! She brings in really good music and movies to her class that actually relate to what you're learning and help if you weren't quite understanding. She's really easy to talk to about your papers, and will give helpful advice, and she creates a laidback atmosphere in class to share your thoughts or ask questions. It's a fun class.
She's not that fun.
a horrible teacher and a horrible human being
run away!
P. D. is beyond ambiguous when it comes to her tedious assignments and she is not particularly helpful with anything. She is a condescending bitter woman who rarely finds any need to crack a smile. Sometime she brings in movies which is great because then she can’t talk. Consider yourself warned…
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH HER. Her assignments are extremely vague and unclear and she is very rude. She will cut you off if you aren't saying what she wants you to. Very tough grader as well no one in the class got an A.
I took writing the essay with this professor. She is terrible. I agree with what the others said. Did not give out any A's, even if they were deserved. No patience with students, even though she gives out extremely vague suggestions on how to edit your essay. Very moody and expectations unrealistic/ unclear.
booo this woman. boooooo.
condescending, moody, and really unlikeable. i could care less about the class and she made me not want to do any of the work. she expects you to be some world class writer and find the meaning of life in everything you read.
the others say enough don't they. ok well i guess i will just say she is the worst professor at the school...and the worst person in the universe. ENJOY!!!
Absolutely terrible. A negative person.
She can be harsh and moody sometimes, but she has a lot of good ideas about writing and genuinely wants to help make your essay better. Writing the Essay is already not too fun, but she is really good at bringing out interesting concepts and improving your essay. and she has good taste in music for listening in class.
I really didn't like writing before this class, but I have learned so much. Not only in writing but in reading too. She can be a little harsh sometimes, but only to people who aren't prepared. I haven't had any problems. Overall, I would take another class of hers.
Horrible. Bad attitude, vicious temper, nasty woman who can't tell you what she wants but grades you harshly anyways.
Avoid at all costs! Doran is mean and moody, and she is extremely demanding yet ridiculously vague with her assignments. While it may seem like all of the Writing the Essay professors are terrible, Doran is by far one of the worst to end up with.
Doran can be hard, but she is well worth it. She has helped me grow as a writer and person. The class is very interesting. She craves participation (only if it is thoughtful, otherwise she'll probably cut you off). She wants to keep the class moving in a good direction and this is why she does it. May come off snippy, but it is all for our benefit.
Lorraine Doran is perhaps the only person I have personally met on whom I would wish grave personal and professional misfortune, pain, and suffering. She is one of the most capricious, vicious, and nasty people I have ever met, and ranks among the top 10 most incompetent educators whose classes I have taken. I don't know why NYU employs her.
Best teacher ever.
she is a terrible human being and cannot give instructions clearly and does not deserve to be an educator. NYU please fire this woman
Great professor. Deeply cares that her students learn something significant in her class. Not for people with thin skin because she will call you out to try to prompt discussion & complex ideas, but never to embarrass you. Has strong opinions & is great to learn from if you can get over your own ego. It won't be easy, but she appreciates effort.
Seriously the coolest teacher ever. She is a hardass and expects good work, so if you're lazy don't take her. I have taken away so much from her class though. She has awesome taste in music and films, and analyzes such things as examples for writing the essays. She also has a hilarious dry sense of humor. Will miss her.
One of the best professors I've ever had! She is tough, but worth it. My writing and worldview have expanded because she challenged me to look at my writing and consequently, the way I viewed the world. Discussions were always interesting, and she is approachable if you truly want to improve. Come to class with an open mind and-it's worth it.
Definitely a difficult teacher, but teaches a class worth taking if you'll put in the effort. Some people say she's mean, but it's really only if you have it coming (don't come to class, don't bring in homework, don't do reading, etc.) I think I actually learned a lot from her class
Not a nice person, nor a helpful teacher. Made me hate writing.
She's ridiculously mean. She doesn't really help you get anywhere. Loved writing, hated her.
The worst professor you will ever meet. Absolutely loved writing until I was forced to take her class. Biggest regret of my life so far.
She's the type of professor that'll make you hate writing, no matter whether you liked doing it in the first place or not. She's vague when giving assignments, harsh grader and gives vague instructions on how you can better your work. DON'T TAKE HER!!!!!
Professor Doran is tough. She has high expectations, and does not sugar coat. But she is one of the best professors I have ever had. She made me dig deep, past the BSing that MCC teaches its students in the first semester. My writing improved immensely, and I am really proud of my work from the class.
Very good professor who takes the time to work with students individually. don't take this class if you want an easy A. you have to work hard for your grade and expect a lot of reading and assignments.
please dont take her if u dont wanna fail
Tough class, but if you like writing, or want to be better at writing, take her. She does one-on-one conferences with students and truly aims to make their work better. Would take any class she taught. If you are quiet in class and do not participate, don't take her class.
Don't take her class. She does not sympathize with any special condition.
shes pretty mean i cant lie... her office hours arent really a help.. i would not recommend her at all
Great class. Great professor. But DO YOUR WORK.
I can only say that if you were as unfortunate as I to be placed on class roster, it's because you had a late registration window.
Doran was my favorite professor this semester. Every class was intriguing and had interesting discussions. I wish every class was recorded so I can listen to them all over again. She is very intuitive and plugged in to pop-culture. She is easy to relate to and is one of the realest people I have met. She will challenge you to be a better writer.
She's a great professor who demands a lot of work but if you genuinely enjoy writing and expressing your thoughts in a cohesive manner, I highly recommend taking her. She works with you and helps you reach your full potential.
I hope that you don't have the extreme misfortune of receiving her as a professor.
Assigns 2x amount of work compared to the other teachers teaching the same class. Can be very moody. Gives very specific feedback. Very fair grader. If you try hard: seeing the writing center, meeting with her, doing exactly what she says in prompts you will do well.
I used to love writing but having her as a professor definitely put a damper on that. Her class lectures were alright, sometimes enjoyable (participation is vital), but the way she graded and critiqued essays was horrible. Could be moody at times and first impressions are really important for her
She's a very, very demanding writing teacher. Which I guess is fine if you've devoted your life to becoming an great writerotherwise it's just painful being in her class. Seriously, I didn't choose my major (which has nothing to do with writing) so I could spend seven hours a week analyzing texts.
She is honestly the worst professor I have ever had.. She is very opinionated, and only works off her ideas that she cannot explain. Her directions are horrible, and it is really hard to share in class. She is very intimidating, demeaning, and condescending whilst makes a very unhappy learning environment that should not be tolerated at NYU.
Just don't.
I had a hard time in this class. Her directions online are hard to follow. Class definitely helped though.
She is evil to be honest. I think about her class and I want to cry. Not sure if they are tears of joy that I left the class, or tears of sorrow when I remember my experience in the class.
She doesn't know anything tbh.....
Never again. Very demeaning woman.
Honestly thinking of her class makes me get triggered and I'm a senior now been 3 years since I had her ..
She is too smart to teach -- must have forgotten what is it like to be a first-year college student who doesn't know how to write (in the way she wants). She expects you to write clear and deep essays with her poetic but vague af instructions and unorganized lectures. smh
At first, when I read her reviews, I was so scared of her class. I started off the class shaky but finished strong. Her conferences actually helped me and if you listen to her feedback, it'll help your grade out. Her prompts are bit vague but she isn't as bad as everyone else says she is here.
Lorraine challenges you to be better, and I learned so much from her. Her class was not nearly as hard as everyone says. She grades fairly and genuinely wants you to succeed. The homework is manageable. Class is not an easy A, but it is enjoyable and worth it. Take her class if you actually want to learn something.
Every person I talked to taking Expos1 with her agreed that she was a very hard grader. Contradicts advice she gives you about topics to write your papers on, looks for specific things, can be harsh when replying to in class discussions making some students feel bad, and has really unclear guidelines on what she wants/is grading on assignments.
Personally I have really enjoyed taking her class. Took her twice in one year and I do not regret it. She's very detailed in what she looks for and is very helpful. She's understanding and her classes are enjoyable because you always feel like you've learned something. No matter what your paper is on the lectures always relate in some way.
Professor Doran is INTENSE. She is very intelligent and has very high expectations. You have to work really hard, but she really helped me to improve my writing skills. Her conferences are really helpful she will basically tell you exactly how to edit your paper. She's really intimidating, but she wants everyone to succeed.
Prof. Doran is the best. She is so intelligent and gives great feedback. Most importantly, it is so obvious that she cares a lot for her students. She makes a genuine effort to get to know her students and remember what they like and what they are good at. She is extremely knowledgeable as well as a great professor. We stan
Prof. Doran is a hard grader but if you put in the time and effort to work on your essays, you can manage to get an A. Contrary to past reviews, it seems that she has had a change of heart is an understanding and approachable professor. Make sure you attend her one-on-one meetings before submitting your final essays for each "progression".
As a freshman, Prof. Doran stood out to me for two reasons: she genuinely wants her students to succeed and makes an effort to familiarize herself with them, unlike the rest of my profs. Her class isn't an easy A but she is very helpful, attend her conferences, follow her feedback, actively engage in class discussions and that should suffice.
Her class was challenging in the sense that she was somewhat of a tough grader, and the assignment load. Nevertheless, Professor Doran is a very fair grader. Her feedbacks are very specific and concise and she always lets you know beforehand what she expects in an essay to clarify her grading policy. The assignments were copious but very helpful.
She's too strict with her essay grading. If you participate during class and don't act like a clown, you'll be fine. But I wouldn't take her again.
I felt like she never let me develop my ideas. She always shot me down before I could ever make a coherent argument.
If you take her you can forget about your creativity. She is gonna force you to write in a specific way. Forget about critical thinking. She is passive aggressive. Tons of work. GPA destroyer. Words of wisdom, "Don't take her." If you do, it is gonna be life long trauma.
Lowkey ruined everyone's GPA by just existing, she gives terrible grades, works very differently compared to the other expos teachers and slanders you in class and her "conferences." Do not take her for your own sanity!
I think Professor Doran genuinely cares and honestly, the lectures were enjoyable as long as students were actively participating - the students make or break the class. In terms of grading if you communicate and ask for help then you will be fine and definitely conference with her when it comes time and don't wait last minute to do the assignments
ACE with her was the farthest thing from a free A imaginable as she grades projects fairly harshlt. A lot of time needs to be put into assignments for a good grade. However, she is very accessible and gives feedback that genuinely helps with improvement. She is also very flexible with deadlines which really helps when things get busier.
There is no clear rubric. Your grade is determined by how many comments are given. There is no winning in this class. Even if you are told to write about your point of view for an argument during Doran's conference time, she will make you write it in the way she wants. Terrible way to teach writing. Does not respect students opinions at all.
I took her class twice, one for EXPOS-UA - 1 and EXPOS-UA - 2. I got a B+ for the second class. She's passionate on the topics she teaches and is nice. Her essay grading is harsh but it did help my writing for the long run. If you do badly on those, the video essay will boost your grade. Just participate and do assignments on time, you'll do fine!
Showing up to class matters, no matter how good your work is she will grade you depending on how much she likes you. She does not appreciate your opinions on your own work and will try to lead you towards her direction. No room for creative freedom. She slanders students in her forum discussions.
You will be forced down a path she chooses and what she wants. If she doesn't like you, your way of writing, or your idea, she will destroy your grade. Her instructions are vague, meeting during office hours and conferences did little to fix anything as she does not give any solid advice besides borderline insulting you for your work.
WARNING: DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL!!! She is not a good professor and is not clear on her grading or by the criteria in which she assigns grades for. She does not respect student opinions, and will in fact, force you to see her opinion only to be accepted by her. If you write your opinion, she will grade against you, will not receive an A.
Would give a 4 but too many low ratings. She's not bad as long as you do all the work and listen to her feedback. She's also really nice and invested in the classes and just cared a lot.
I didn't realize how bad she was until I took my second EXPOS class (diff professor) at Tandon. The first EXPOS class I had with her still gives me nightmares. I believe she wants her students to do well, but come on. The same amount of effort I put into her class earned me a B-, but I aced the second EXPOS class with an A
Avoid taking her class if possible. Her grading makes no sense and she's very egoistic. She will go hard on you if you don't volunteer in class, and even if you do, she is very judgemental on your work. There is some benefits to her, like time flexibility but overall, I had a miserable time in her class.
If you don't want to risk a lower GPA, do NOT take Doran. She grades harshly and it's difficult to attain an A in her class. The professor can get annoyed with participation in class, and may even cancel class as that is what occurred for our class. She also was not accessible at times. My best advice is to switch out of her class if you get her.
She truly helped and supported me through the whole semester!
This professor could be defined off one thing alone. I used to like writing before taking this class and now I HATE writing.
Gives an insane amount of work compared to other expos professors, will grade you badly if she doesn't like your ideas, will make you change your examples if she doesn't agree with them... If she doesn't like you, you won't get a good grade no matter what you do.
i loved her. make sure to talk a lot in her class. but the amount put into this class is how much you get back. super caring loves to talk to her students and very accessible. you can talk to her about anything basically and the topics are crazy interesting and she makes everything very clear and understandable
I took her class years ago, just for yall freshman to know and im still haunted by the class. She def taking her job too seriously. Put lot of work jut to get average grade.
Feedback is useless and provides unclear guidance on what to fix. Will punish you if you disagree with her.
Probably the worst writing professor that you could take as a freshman here at Tandon. Her rubric and guidelines for the contrived essays she creates are nothing short of messy and confusing. Her revisions within conferences are insulting, stressful and unclear. If you can't figure out what she wants or if she doesn't like you, give up.
Bro she not even that bad
Willing to extend deadlines for the class, gives great constructive feedback, tries to make the class engaging, she may see confusing if you don't understand her points well but she is always willing to answer questions and is very available outside of class (send her an email and she will always get back to you asap when she's available)
