listening to her lecture is a total waste of time
Really smart. I learned a lot from her classes. Scary, but in a good way.
Difficult, but rewarding. Slack off - she'll get you. Work hard - it'll pay off
Dr. Weir is brilliant, and most students don't like a female prof to be a genius
lectures are rambling. office hours are worthwhile
If you try hard, she'll reward you for it. Mind-expanding. Most I ever learned in a class.

amazingly mind-expanding, very dedicated to education
a big fish in a very small pond, students' ignorance and the banality of teaching undergrad courses year in year out are most likely causes of the more biting rhetoric of this very generous instructor.
She is not a very nice person.
Although I did extremely well in her course, I found Professor Weir mean-spirited, arrogant, and unwilling (certainly not incapable) of designing classes with students' learning in mind. Intellectually powerful, as her scholarly work reveals, but nasty.
The best class I've ever taken. No exams, no papers. A reading journal is the only assignment and it's wide open. Amazing lady. Highly recommend her. Great respect for her students and Native culture.
A unappreciated jewel in the crown of UBC. Her lectures are only rambling if you havn't done the readings. The material is difficult, made more so by the systematic exclusing of theory from the UBC English and Philosophy department.
I've been in a couple of Dr Weir's classes and found her supportive and friendly. What I like best about her is her flexibility, and the feistiness and passion she shows in discussing complex issues (eg aboriginal politics). One of my best profs at UBC
She is completely unpredictable. You never know what the thing that will make her fly off the handle is before you say it and suffer the consequences. She was fine in undergrad, stay away from her in grad school when you'll be subject to the concentrated force of her spontaneous combustion.

The so-called absurd comments on IKEA, Fried chicken, shoes etc. all relate back to the material in very interesting ways. She is knowledgable and believes strongly that theory is not simply for the classroom. She has an execellent sense of humor, which is very apparent in her lectures.
Avoid taking her classes if you're not an English major. Has completely unreasonable expectations for papers and doesn't like it when you don't agree with her views. Lectures extremely boring and ALWAYS off topic. Would be a great prof for grad school but not for a 200 level english courses.avoid!
Excellent

Demanding, but it is an upper level course. Was always available for discussion. A sense of humor is required, as is a willingness to learn, rather than regeritate theory to fellate ones own ego. I recommend her for anyone legitamately interested in learning a lot.
I took her class first term 2004W. She is an amazing person, with an amazing mind. She is compelling and intelligent. Her course was interesting - although her lectures at first did not seem to relate to the material - in the end, it all made sense. She is open to helping students and inspiring.
Presents political analyses in a v. upfront way; has strong sense of social justice and doesn't see academic work as separate from that. Lectures sometimes hard to follow. Expects you to be VERY familiar with the readings before coming to class. Demanding, but helpful and welcoming in office hours
Wow, amazing prof. Very interested, and took what appeared to be a boring subject to me and transformed it into my favorite class. Not only helpful but very intelligent. Word of advice, go to class, she'll throw on some bonus marks at the end of term.
she's smokin' hot!
An important professor. Any student is lucky to have her. She is direct, serious, and funny. Her lecture provide a window of serious analysis of the text and the large social context that the author may attempt to convey. She is a tough marker. She may be a guru, but she's human too. Talk with her.

This delightful professor is chilli-pepperific!
Hmm. I won't take another class with her. The lectures didn't tie into our assignments. Although I happen to agree with her political stance, I think her soapbox gets in the way of the material. Barely anyone talked in class. I didn't find her helpful in her office. I did like her sense of humour.
The average of the class was in the high 70's (percentage-wise). She's a rebel at heart and I particularly like her notion of how we need to "fight the system". The lectures were few but the discussion periods plenty. Unlike the style of teaching, the readings were interesting.
Dr. Weir is important because her brilliance is engaged with the real world. She knows everything, and lives all that knowledge. Her advocacy for intellectual freedom and First Nations rights permeates everything she communicates. I appreciate her and her ability to locate meaningful education in the face of this terrible, oppressive University.
Good (but long) reading list. Lectures too few, but engaging. Relies on group discussion a little too much. Absence of essays and exams was most welcome. Beware the "Weir-worshippers" you will likely encounter in her class. Not pleasant to attend if you haven't done your readings. Class will be largely what you make of it.
It took a while to figure out how to work the analysis from her lectures in my papers, keep your eye on the prize and you too can do well. For me, the material came via figuring out how to read her, misfires and all. In the end there was good solid theory methodology from someone I dearly liked. But talk to her mid term, before the lineups amass.
An important professor, I think, because her lectures at first appear cynical, brutal, and unforgiving and in the end remain the same. But what you get from the course is, hopefully, a different perspectives of how literature can be read - very useful tools. Behind the staunch, perm-pressed professor is a human being.
More interested in her subject than the average ubc prof, but closer to an activist than an educator. I didn't feel very free to speak my mind in her class, but that was just an inference from her manner.
Four years completed at UBC without taking at least one class with this woman is four years that have been squandered. One of the most meaningful and important experiences I have ever had at UBC. She is harsh, realistic, and certainly not afraid to speak her mind but also lovely and hilarious. Don't be shy. You'll be grateful in the end.
out of 4 years at UBC this was by far the worst class i have ever taken. Class discussions were unhelfpul and irrelevant, and the profs large ego got in the way of any sort of class discussion that wasn't outright praise of the prof herself.
She's the prof I have been waiting for these past three years. Full of piss and vinegar and as a theory prof she is what you need to get your head out of the clouds and thinking for yourself! The info isn't spoon-fed, you earn your marks with challenging and thought provoking discourse. If you want a different learning experience, take her course.
if this was your 1st day of class and you wanted to check the ratings, i just wanna say one thing:RUN NOW.
Professor Weir is a love/hate kind of prof, but by the end of the term of both classes I took with her, the vast majority of the haters had changed their minds. She throws a lot of information at you but has very reasonable expectations for students' written work. Prof. Weir is passionate and incredibly knowledgeable- well worth taking a chance on.
I spent 13 years in university, and can honestly say that Professor Weir was by far the best teacher I ever had. She was one of the few professors who really made me think. She is a real gem, although she is often misunderstood.

Weir's unorthodox and challenging. Critical thinking isn't just a slogan for her. She might seem hard to digest at first, but give her a chance, and you will learn lots. She doesn't baby the students, but she's very flexible and open to suggestions about the way she teaches. If you want to think, not just get your 3 creidts, take her class.
Hands down the best prof at UBC. If she seems problematic and difficult it is because she only bothers to teach the problematic and the difficult.
An absolute waste of time.
excellent
Just about the most self righteous and obnoxious woman ever. Anti-everything for the sake of it. Will make character judgments based on her assumptions about your "programming"- ugh! Re words your statments to suit her projections and that is so frustrating!
If you're bored with classes in the English department but still torture yourself by taking them, take this one as a breath of fresh air. It'll be hard to go back, maybe even impossible.... :)
This is the worst class that I have taken. She is not helpful at all and I have no idea how she comes up with the grades she gives people. She doesn't teach at all. Although I really enjoyed the readings in this class and the subject matter, I feel as though this class was a total waste of my time and money.
Definitely a teacher who evokes strong emotions in people. I hated her for most of the first course I took with her, then came to realize how much I had actually learned and grown in her class. She is incredibly helpful during office hours, a great person to talk to, and utterly dismissive of those who don't come to her for help. Challenge yours
What was she saying? Talks in weird tangents. I'm not even sure it was English. There was one day I learned something... it was when she had called in a sub. Yikes.
Started off the class not liking her but after seeing her in office hours and regularly attending lectures she really grew on me. Plus, only 2 papers worth 50% each for your entire mark!! No Final!! Go see her in office hours, thats when I realized that she is a real human being!!
So i haven't seen any reviews for her 110 first year class yet, but I can say I don't really get what she's talking about most of the time. Maybe because her interpretation is so deep that first years have trouble grasping. I find some of her lectures irrevelant to the text. When we need more time on the text she spends 10 min. at the end of class.
She creates a true sense of community in her class while still being absolutely rigorous. This course can REALLY change the way you look at Canada and at aboriginal people. It should be a mandatory course for Canadians. Fiery, can definitely get angry (justifiably), but really cares about her students and is very helpful if you go to office hours.
I learned a lot from her. Makes you view Canada and the aboriginals in a new light. Her lectures are quite deep.
She's erudite, passionate, and inspiring if you can grasp what she's saying. I think people are put off by her righteousness, but I think that's a student ego thing- if you actually consider what she's trying to teach, it can really change your thinking.
Brilliant. A challenging course but Dr. Weir made theory very refreshing and intriguing. Some will be scared off by her but if you read the text and go to her lectures, you will have a great experience. She is incredible. Her lectures flow a bit like stream of consciousness, but connect well IF u read the text. Only then will u understand her! =)
At first I thought this class (first nations lit) would be amazing, Lorraine seemed keen to open out minds. But she was one of the worst teachers in the field of first nations studies.I found it was very hard to keep up with the long, dense, often drab and sometimes extremely depressing reading list. And the discussions were not very inclusive.
the last bastion of critical thinking in a see of corporate ****s
Insightful teacher, helped me a lot outside of class with essay suggestions and ideas for improvement. I learned a lot from her.
Bad time management and organization as she rambles during the lecture and ends up keeping class in an extra 10 minutes. If you disagree with her about ANYTHING, beware! She will not listen and I swear she made a girl cry one time.
Intimidatingly intelligent prof with a ton of experience outside the classroom, which she heavily emphasizes. Do your readings, pay attention and definitely go to her if anything is less than clear to you -- don't mistake her gruffness for inaccessibility, she's very helpful. Her teaching is a political eye-opener.
Dr. Weir is an excellent prof. Definitely knows what she's talking about. Challenges mainstream and conformist ways of thinking. Strong views and very sarcastic. Only downside is that she lectures in a monotone voice.
Just brilliant. In every way. her focus is your learning and understanding of the content. She challenges conformist ways of thinking and teaches students to think that way. Basically opens your brain to analysis. Very helpful, always available.
Just terrible !
The worst class I've ever had
Goes on constant rants and hardly relates to the brilliant readings she's assigned. Class topics are interesting but she is a frustrating person to listen to. Same lectures (or rants) happen throughout the course. Occasional disrespectful comments in response to students which is highly upsetting.
She's amazing! Such a brilliant woman who shows you the path to brilliance. Teaches you how to analyze complex texts and cares about your understanding of her comments. She's really interested in your learning and is very impressed when you respond to her suggestions. Lectures are a privilege to go to. Just fantastic!
Simply, the best.
The best professor in the entire department. teaches amazing ideas and line of thinking. She's always available and also willing to help with essay ideas because she teaches you to think! Its a must take. Really.
She is one of the worst profs I've had. She is VERY opinionated and does not handle ideas/questions from students that oppose her views. She goes on rants frequently that do not relate to the texts we are learning. I did not learn a thing from this class & I would have to tune out so that I wouldn't make a facial expression that she could pick on.
Wanted to love her but couldn't. She is passionate and brilliant, but her unclear daily tangents and harsh forms of "constructive" criticism (she is not afraid to tell the class that we don't know how to write) made her unapproachable. The reading list was excellent and the course would have been a favourite of mine, if not for her teaching style.
Loved the readings, but dreaded lectures. Dr. Weir didn't make me feel respected. (She even discouraged English majors in the class to pursue something else, saying that we would only become Starbucks baristas or high school teachers.) She was unclear in her expectations for assignments and tended to go off topic.
She was very disorganized the whole semester. The topics we discussed were pretty heavy and I think it may have helped had the material been presented in a way that we could have engaged with. The rambles and tangents were not helpful, and I wish we talked about the books in more detail. Very self-righteous and hostile.
I would recommend this class to all students considering a future major in English or FNIS. The reading list was fabulous, and she isn't afraid to bring real issues to the table rather than theoretical analysis of books written by the usual old white guys. I really got so much out of this class.
No joke, her lectures are so boring. 90% of the time she will go off topic and talk about indigenous related material. However the reading list was diverse and interesting. 1 in class assignment, 1 at home essay, 1 term paper and finally the final exam. attendance is taken for every class, go to the discussion classes instead.
The reading list is great but her lectures are a bit boring. She tends to ramble and use up the class time on detailed analysis of minutia, but doesn't always address the entirety of the text. Nice prof overall, but bring some extra homework to do during class time. Attendance is taken every day, so show up physically if you can't show up mentally.
Shes super helpful! Great prof, she is hard but if you go to her for help she is SUPER easy to work with. she will give you alot of help.
I hate english but this course wasn't bad. The lectures can be boring, but as long as you attend Professor Weir provides a lot of information and key points that will be on the final. She's way more helpful than you think, if you ever need help... ASK she's super helpful. She seems like a tough prof but she's not, go chat with her she's so nice.
Taking ENGL409 with Dr. Weir was one of the hardest things I've ever done, but also the most rewarding. It was a theory course, so not much literature, so she expects you to read a lot and come to your own understanding of the text. There is no cookie cutter grade scheme, just as long as you can argue for your case well. Would have her again
Dr. Weir's lectures are really interesting. She's passionate about what she teaches. She's available for help after class and during office hours. She really helped me improve my writing. If you put in the effort you will get a solid grade.
Dr. Weir is really knowledgeable in her field, and that really shows in this course. Even if you don't have a particular interest in Indigenous studies, you will likely still find the content of this class interesting. She rarely reads off her slides so it's important to take notes throughout the semester, to prep for the final. Takes attendance!
Very knowledgable in her field ... but some profs aren't meant to teach
While a graduate student, I took a course with her. The worst class I have ever taken in my entire university career. Harsh feedback and intimidating lectures. Weir has no qualms about telling students in class that their ideas/assignments were bad or wrong, and killed discussions. If you care about your mental health or your gpa, AVOID THIS PROF.
One of my favourite courses. A bit intimidating at first, but she's actually very caring and considerate of people's different backgrounds. Paying attention in class really helped with doing well on the 2 papers, but no lecture slides - you have to take good notes! She was great at facilitating discussion and genuinely cares for students wellbeing.
I'm so thankful I have her as my literature professor. The books she gave made me, an international student, feel more connected to Canada. My favorite book from this class is Marrow Theives. This is probably the most meaningful class I took this year. I know I'm weaker than most students in writing, but her assignments allow me to do well in class
She spent 95% of the seminar engaging in paranoid fantasies about the various cabals she believed were conspiring against each other in the English department: grads vs. undergrads, PhD's vs. Masters, and most everyone against her. I took the class to learn about theory. I learned nothing. Ask anyone in the dept about her. Even her colleagues.
