This guy is a freakin jerk off. If you enjoy listening to quasi-communist views the entire period and learn very little about sociology he's your man. So if you want to increase your heart rate without exercising definetely take this jackass's course.
This teacher is ridiculus! He has you take about 4 pages of notes a day for which you dont even use. Then he tells you to write what you think you need!? You never knows what to expect on the test because he just says "read" the chapter.
This class is so easy. If you attend class, take good notes, and read the material, you should easily get an A. Mr. B. is good at explaining ideas and very helpful in answering questions.
He showed a movie about Flint Mich. (lets just say if you dont enjoy watching someone kill & skin a rabbit this is not the class to take) also he has you write 8 pages of notes a day... and his study guides are very vague
He tells you not to do this but study the test at the end of the chapters and book his test are taken directly from there! My class was a good class we all enjoyed and all past. Towards the end he will also give page numbers that the test questions are on.

Bully pulpit user for political views!!! Great teacher otherwise. Good at makinging you think and arguing sensitive topics. Punctual and clear. Fair testing.
Professor B. was very interesting, and very helpful. He makes you want to go out and do something about the injustices in this country. Keep up the great work!
this professor is the most unprofessional person I have ever met. He used his position as a teacher as his personal platform for his political views. He made comments that were slanderous towards our President, and military. I would like to know what that has to do with the subject.
Such a liberal!!! LOL But he is a good guy and he'll help you a lot.
Mr. B is very nice and helpful. test were a bit difficult until i realized you need to study the test questions in the back of the book! very helpful, just go talk to him:)
he is very clear and helpful. tests were difficult. M/C test but very difficult
Great teacher. He voiced his opinions but only did so to make a point. You are welcomed to counter his opinions/findings but make sure you can back them up with proof! Notes are plentiful but interesting. Very down to Earth and helpful. Overall a great teacher and interesting class - I would recommend him.
He was alright. There are a lot of notes and he just reads them from the overhead. Nice guy, alright stories. Shows good movies.
i missed like 5 days and he gave me a "D''..be sure u go to class b/c he will fail you!!!!
This guy was such a left wing fanatic. He offended much of the class & used his position to preach his political platform of socialism. TOTAL WASTE OF MY TIME
he's very passionate about his view. he is a very good teacher. has really good energy and make the material somewhat intresting. I think he's a cutie too.
His lectures have absolutely nothing to do with his tests making it utterly impossible to study accurately for his tests. I advise he discuss what will be on his tests rather than complain about our nation's government and our current president.
Professor Bonavita is such a great teacher!I took his clas over the summer and got a D b/c i was absent alot.Since I really liked him as a teacher,I took his class again this fall.He is funny and he helps you if you have a problem. He has very strong views, but he is sure not to impose on your own.People who dont like him bc of his views are immature
Great teacher, easy to understand and talk to, study the overheads he gives you and revert back to study guide and read the chapters and you will do fine. Eye appealing as well, I might not have done well to my own fault but thanks Lou. great teacher. Brooklyn (JT)

If you are under 21 and are impressionable, you will find Lou fascinating. If you are over 25 and have opinions based on life experiences, you'll want to "knock him upside the head"! Take notes, go to class and do the extra credit ( I didn't even open the book) and you will do well. And if you like older guys, he's not bad on the eyes!
He reveals the truth about our system. Our sleepy nation is too busy fighting for money that when someone like LOU talks, we all get uncomfortable. If we had people like him in the government, this country could have been the heaven on earth. If we cannot question our government, then what ditinguishes us from a flock of sheeps. Go head and pay $10
easy. have to study for tests though. he has some difficult tests and easy ones. but overall pretty easy if you try
V/G class if you want a good idea of the direction our country take this guy.Test are M/C and a little difficult until I focused on chapter summary's and M/C practice tests in the back of the book.Got A;25% of the class.Take this class with an open mind and if your not a Republican he will make you think. If your happy in your own world don't bother
I think he was pretty negative about the government. Extremely helpful but very sarcastic. Definatly study the chapters in the text book, all the questions come from there. He talks the entire length of the class and does not let you out early. Super easy papers/homework though.
I learned alot of information that I never knew or even cared to know. I am glad I took this class and how this country is ran. This class is not exactly easy. There is alot of reading, note taking, and studying. There are extra credit papers which are helpful. I liked the teacher. He reveals the truth about our government.
One of those thinks the government is out to get you. interesting stuff, He is very opinionated. Too strict!
He is an excellent teacher. he opens your eyes to what is going on in the world. not fun for the close-minded and republicans! make sure you read the chapters in the book, because test information comes from there.
Mr. Bonavita is the best teacher I've had since elementary school. He's fair, knowledgeable, and very down to earth. I would recommend him to everyone who attends college to actually learn something. Otherwise, you'll end up dropping the class, like my 20 classmates that dropped his class because they were failing.
This professor has his own thoughts and opinion. If you don't agree with him, he will fail you.
This teacher took me by surprise. I wasn't sure what to think of him at first. If you have an open mind, you will find this class very interesting, if not, you'll hate every second of it. As for tests, forget taking notes (even though he says to) just concentrate on chapter reviews in the book and main people like marx & weber. Cool class.
His tests are hard, I've heard there are alot of better teachers!
He was ok.There is no extra points or credit in his class. The grade is just the four tests.I think there are better sociology teachers at HCC.
I loved his class! Very Interesting and I learned a lot. Try to get the best grades on the first 2 tests, because the 2 last ones are a little bit harder, especially the 3rd one :( GREAT TEACHER!!!
Professor Bonavita gave me a broader understanding of the world we live in. His lectures were really helpful and his words gave me something to think about. If you go over the notes in class, read the chapters in the book you will do fine. He's not into the golden rule paper but it is required like in any class.Best teacher i've had in a while!
Failed me by one point, TEACHER DOESNT ROUND UP GRADE. VERY HARD ON GRADING.
Prof. Bonavita is THE BEST professor I've had!!!! He makes you think, gives real world examples, and gives clear notes. If you show up to class, and listen to his lectures, you will do well. His tests are multiple choice, and not difficult, if you re-read your notes one time. I laugh in class each day, and he's worth getting up early for! TAKE HIM!
Mr.Bonatita was my favorite prof. so far! I learned so much in his class. Very easy if you just show up and take notes. Great class!
This prof. is CRAZY! He says the craziest things always keeps u interested.Class notes dont help much READ THE BOOK!U MUST STUDY & DONT SLACK OFF. ATTENDANCE IS A MUST CUZ IF NOT U WILL GET LOST.THE CLASS EASY A but U HAVE TO STUDY!In other words I loved this teacher & class. He is strict tho & he hates cell phones!Read ur book CONSTANTLY!
Mr. Bonavita is an excellent teacher!! he makes you think out of the box with real examples about society. Read your notes and chapters in the book after class if necessary. 2 tests and some quizes ... if you fail one test it may be hard to step up!!
He tells students to use critical thinking in life, but at the same time he wants you to listen and believe exactly what he says, nothing else. Contradictory. And don't try giving a different opinion than his because he will just change the subject instead of answering. Also, bashes conservatives and christians every class.
I dont have this teacher for a class but everytime my sociology teacher needs a sub, Mr.Bonavita is our sub. most of the things he says are very INTERESTIN. he will teach what he has to but makes it interesting by giving us real life situations or examples.VERY GOOD TEACHER, HES ONE OF MY FAVORITE TEACHERS SO FAR. i recomend him
Great teacher, class is always interesting. Exams are a little difficult and make up all of your grade but as long as you study it is pretty much an easy A
I loved this class, he is very straight forward & tell you the things the way it is. The truth and w/facts. He makes you think out of the box & this bother some of the students. But the truth hurt!! His power points are quite boring and his test are difficult and makes you think a lot!! tricky questions!! so watch out. He is very good.
Teacher was fun, very sarcastic and nice. There is a lot of note taking and 90% of it is on the test. He tells you read your notes every night, and to be honest it really helps. The test are hard so read notes every night and you should be fine. There are 5 test and a 1500 word paper. Just take notes, study and write paper nd you should pass with A
Mr. Bonavita is not a bad teacher but his method of teaching does not work for me. I took his class at night from 6-9:45PM and that entire time was taking notes with no breaks or even a discussion. I signed up for this class because I'm greatly intereste din the subject but he disappointed me. Grades rely on tests only. Would not recommend him.
Very confusing teacher! His tests have tricky questions and are made from his notes. I have a B in his class but would not suggest his class to others! Keep looking for a different teacher!
DO NOT TAKE HIM! He has a very dry and sarcastic personality. His class wouldn't be so bad if he actually taught correctly. Notes are mandatory in this class and are taken every class on a powerpoint. After he reads the notes out loud, he lectures and your so busy writing whats on the powerpoint, that you miss the explanation. Awful Teacher!
DOOOO NOTTTT TAKE HIM! Very confusing and gets off of subject . His notes are not simple and you write 100% of the class time. If you cannot multitask between writing and listening, do not take him you'll regret it!
I do not recommend taking his class. You take notes the whole time and unless you are good at listening while you write, it is hard to remember what he says. A lot of the times he gets off topic and talks about his opinions toward society in a sarcastic tone. The tests are really hard and are hard to study for.
NO NOT TAKE HIM. Everything is his opinion or no- ones.
Not an easy professor. The tests are difficult and based on his notes. Reading the textbook is almost a necessity to fully understand the notes you are taking in class. If you read his notes daily, attend class and complete the writing assignments you shouldnt have a problem getting a good grade. He gives you a good basis in Sociology
Professor Bonavita is super super hard. Everything is on a notes basis and I have two full notebooks full of notes, that I may honestly never touch again. The tests are even harder as they are on scantrons and you don't get to physically see the results between what you marked and the test handout. Over-all he does cover the topics very well.
I would personally disregard the previous comments. Bonavita is a wonderful professor!Theres no homework and you only have to write 1 paper the whole semester. His tests are a little on the harder side but as long as you study his notes and listen to his lecture, don't be a slacker and you will do just fine! He definitely has a passion for the subject and will open your eyes to a new point of view. I would recommend taking his class!
Personally, I really like the guy. Very funny and nice. To pass his class, you need studying and actual knowledge on the material. The questions on his test are not common sense! It required application of what you have learned to situations, and I liked that!
I took him last fall and would NOT recommend him. His tests are hard and you don't know how to study for them. But his lectures are not helpful, either. He uses them to give his political views. Take someone else.
Great teacher, as long as you don't mind writing lots of notes.
This is one of three sociology classes I'm taking this semester (sp12) and I feel like this class is more so of a Government and Economics class compared to the other two. His tests are fair if you study. He is a good teacher, but I would not recommend him for sociology. He is also very strict about not using cell phones during class so dont do it
Horrible instructor. I took this class twice and the second time thinking that I was used to his teaching style, knew the material and confident I would pass the course. I emailed him, sat with him, attended classes and took all notes from front to back in my notebook! Was truly hurt to see a poor grade. Such a poor instructor with dry character.
The tests Bonavita gave were difficult because it was hard to study for them. He would tell you to study from the notes then when he gave the test, the test had barely anything from the notes. ATTENDANCE is a must! i barely passed and recieved a C.
Awesome teacher. Highly recommend. Very organized and clear. Tests are easy if you study and attend class. He is very helpful and funny too.
He is well organized andd makes it interesting. highly recommend. very helpful
Easy Grade if you pay attention, and Interesting class over all
I learned more about Marxism & Socialism than Sociology. No need for textbook as he teaches his own ideology. I didn't agree w/his views, but the class was not hard. There are a lot of notes. He tells you to reread your notes 6 times. If you do, you should be fine. Tests are sometime confusing, you have to be able to apply what you've learned.
very strict and not very helpful.3
Had him for Intro to Soc. He's a little stubborn and definitely opinionated. Pretty straightforward though. He lectures and you take notes. Tests are 90% notes 10% textbook. MUST go to every class. You lose 1 letter grade after 4 absences and 2 after 5. Pretty easy class overall though. It's also curved. A is 185 pts and class is out of 240 pts.
Great teacher. Very helpful and always avaialble. Tests are easy if you study. Interesting class. Def recommend him.
I would not recommend taking his class. I didn't have a good experience with him. He puts a lot of notes on the board for you to write down but moves way too fast. He doesn't spend enough time covering the material, but more like giving you the gist. 5 tests in the semester and they are based on the notes you took and videos shown in class.
The test are all concept based and the questions were so broadly that I over analyzed them.
Textbook never used in class. He expects you to read it on your own, but his notes in class are what matters most. Tests are hit or miss, they are based on his notes & he does not give a review. There is no homework. There are 5 exams & 1 Gordon Rule paper. Need to score well on tests or you will fail on account of grade based on exam scores and GR
Mr. Bonavita is very passionate about worldly issues and sociology in general. He might scream during his lectures, but that's because hes done his research on it and is trying to prove a point about the concept of human ideals. He was a great professor for lectures. I recommend him.
Take him if you are not easily offended and don't mind writing pages and pages of notes.
Great teacher. very helpful and well organized. If you attend class and study its easy. Highly recommend
Didnt like him at all just talks about what he believes not both sides of the issue. Annoying wouldnt recommend to anyone.
Useless, def DO NOT TAKE.
Hes a nice guy and does have strong opinions, but I think we all do one way or another. I believe if you study your notes and review the terms you can defintley pass with an A. It is a lot of notes with a fast pace but they are very helpful.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE!!!! A LOT OF NOTES AND HALF OF THE NOTES ARE NOT EVEN COVERED ON THE EXAMS. HE DOES NOT REVIEW FOR THE EXAM. DOES NOT GIVE EXTRA CREDIT, IF YOU THINK YOU ARE FAILING HE DOESN'T INFORM YOU ON ANYTHING! BASE GRADE SOLELY ON EXAMS. I GOT A "D" THIS TEACHER HAS NO SYMPATHY AT ALL!!! AND I WAS IN CLASS EVERYDAY. DON'T RECOMMEND!!!!
He does not do reviews and notes are not on test most of them aren't at least avoid Class at all. costs he is nice very intelligent but poor prof
Although the material presented was interesting, the man is not approachable at all. He makes everybody feel like a peasant, and does nothing but bash capitalism and religion every single class. Many of the exam questions are about the numbers and facts, not so much about theories. Would not recommend this professor to anyone.
His class seemed like it would be easy since the lectures are common sense. The topics are interesting but the exams are a little challenging. I took very detailed notes in class, had good attendance, and studied but still did not receive an exam grade higher than a C. Grades based solely on exams. :S
DO NOT TAKE, its way too many notes that really have nothing to do with the tests. His only grades are tests. Don't bother to go to his office hours, he doesn't really help all he says is read: "Read your notes & if you don't understand something look it up in the book."
Awesome teacher. Really interesting class. Always helpful and really nice teacher. If study the tests are easy.
Tough Professor, considers himself a realist but he seems to have had a lot of bad experiences in his past. About two pages of notes front and back during every class but he tells you exactly what to write. Quick glance at your notes the day before exams and you are good to go. Strict no cellphones policy. Grade is based on accumulated test points
*EASY CLASS* he is very sarcastic, don't need book, makes things very simple, I've never taken a pop quiz, literally HIGHLIGHTS everything you need to know and write down if you fail it you are just lazy... the tests are very simple and you only write one 1000 paper he doesn't even read it... (i watched) you just need to have it turned in on time
I'm not sure why he has such poor reviews. I personally thought he was brilliant. Very engaging class that encourages and inspires you to take charge and let your voice me heard. I've learned so much throughout this course that I'm taking two more of his classes next semester
He's a great teacher!! He seems rough, but he really is a nice guy, just stay on his good side! i loved the material in class he is very passionate with what he teaches, which helps. Studying for the tests are a must! One paper to write in his class! (DOES NOT USE BLACKBOARD) keep grades in check!
get ready to study hard, his tests are a little confusing so you really need to read the notes over and over for a few days, make sure to study the class notes and the chapters overall
I love love love this class! I learned so much and he is very inspirational. His lectures are long but meaningful. Questions on the test is exactly what you learned on the PowerPoints. I would definitely take this class again. He is awesome!
I love Prof. Bonavita, his courses have had such a positive impact on me. I originally only took intro bc I needed the credit, but by the end of the semester was so involved and interested that o took sociology of sexuality in the spring. Best prof I've ever had.
Mr B is a great teacher. The lectures are interesting and I would def recommend him. Tests are easy if you go to class and study. great class
Don't waste money on a textbook, you can pass studying your notes and paying attention in class. Took him for Social Problems and it was an easy class. His lectures can be controversial but if you're open-minded you'll enjoy them! They're usually always interesting. Don't be late on exam days or he won't let you take it. No homework.
Best teacher I had at HCC. Awesome lectures, always interesting. Very helpful teacher. Def recommend
Expect to read A LOT of chapters. Gives long boring lectures and class is nothing but note taking, so expect to walk into a dark room with the projector on every day. Grades off 5 exams and a Gordon rule paper. Dropped the class couldnt make it through.
Mr. Bonavita is a great professor. He does dis credit religious beliefs a little too much. But beyond that, he is a nice man and is passionate about what he is lecturing. And I don't see how people say you don't need the book. Reading the chapters ties everything together with his lectures and makes the tests so much easier.
Do not buy the text book i never used mines. The test are based off lectures and power point slides. Good luck if you decide to take his class.
Boring long lectures.
Attendance is essential and you are only allowed a certain amount of absences until your grade drops. It's a lecture class, so just plan to write a lot of handwritten notes. While he does assign a textbook it helps, he suggests to read the chapter summaries at the end of each chapter if for some reason you don't get to the class readings. 1 paper.
Mr. Bonavita is a good teacher, however, he is very opinionated. His class is 100% based on lectures, so be ready to write. His class is graded entirely on 5 tests and there is no homework (except for studying for the tests). He does not give a study guide, so it is imperative that you write exactly what he tells you to, if you want to make an A.
I learned so much from this class. Although, yes you have to take a lot of notes & yes he only takes five test scores for your overall grade, if you show up and take notes/listen to his lectures you will pass with an A. I would also argue that you don't need to buy the textbook, everything on the tests he covers in class.
I loved his class. Amazing teacher, I would definitely take another one of his classes. A lot of notes, but easy A in general. Just study the notes and you'll be fine. Keeps it old school and doesn't like technology.
I thought he was cool, but the class sucks. He is not clear what we need to study for the test. The documentary he shows are either interesting to boring, and he likes to talk through them which is annoying. Did not like the class but he is alright.
Professor Bonavida. He was... Obviously very liberal/progressive/Socialistic... Gives great info! If you love watching documentaries, this is that class! I do, so, it was nice to get credit for doing what I would normally do. His stance on his ideas is solid! You cannot change his mind, don't fight his negative thinking about guns and capitalism.
The class was okay but nothing special. I received a B in the course, which was what I deserved in the class. Only grades are the 5 tests, the book is not worth purchasing, I didn't use it once. Overall I liked him.
Mr. Bonavita was the best teacher/prof. I've ever had. As long as you listen to all the lectures and take good notes, you will pass all the tests. Ive never been a good student, and I was so motivated and interested in this class and a huge part of it was his teaching style and his views.
This class has to be the best lecture I've ever taken as a college student. Some lecture topics may be controversial, if you can be open-minded you will enjoy it. NOTE this professor hates tech in his class if you can put your phone away for 1hr you'll be fine, if not he will ask you to leave the lecture for the day. 10/10 would take this again.
This is literally a really easy class if youre a good note taker. There are only 5 tests and a reflection essay for your grade. No cumulative final. He is very opinionated and he will discredit your opinion if they differ. Overall the class is easy and the tests are directly from his lecture. He will kick you out if he sees your phone or laptop.
One of my favorite teachers at hcc, all you have to do is come to class pay attention and write notes because he explains very thoroughly and he is very passionate about the subject as well which is another great thing about him. He can be strict about things like using your phone or being late to exams but that's easy to follow.
He's an amazing teacher, who really knows his stuff. If you takes all the notes he provides in class, you'll do fine on the tests. He's one of the best teachers i've ever had.
Never take his class. He is rude and condescending.
DONT DO IT ! RUN ! He is very rude his lectures are never match the questions on the test. You can not try to give your opinion on what he talks about because in his mind he is right. Doesnt post on student canvas and doesnt tell you what grade you have. Worst prof.
Good teacher, knows what hes talking about! I learned a lot from his class and I would take it over again if i could.
DON'T DO IT, for the sake of your college experience don't take this professor. worst professor ever doesn't post any of your grades on canvas and VERY VERY RUDE. some guy had his hands in his pockets and he kicked him out because he suspects him using his phone. skip one lecture and you will be so lost
He's a knowledgeable professor. He is very straight forward and blunt. If your feelings get hurt easily or you take things personally he isn't the right fit. I enjoyed his class and I liked his teaching style. He demands of you nothing less than your best. He doesn't tolerate phones in class. Make sure you read your syllabus!
Great class, lectures were so interesting and easy to understand. He is always available to help and answer any questions. I recommend this professor.
NO PHONES!!!!!
Do not recommend .. Pick another professor
He lectures every class. There are 5 main exams and he doesnt give any extra credit assignments to help your grade. He does not allow any phones in the class, he will kick you out if he sees or hears your phone. Theres a lot of note taking and watching documentaries for the Gordon Rule paper
I enjoyed his class a lot. He's straight-forward and very funny. There are notes in every lecture and his exams are based on those notes; you don't need a textbook at all. If you come to class, you'll pass. He grades attendance too.
Professor Bonavita has been one of my favorite teachers at HCC. If you show up, listen to his lectures, take notes, and study- then you will get an A. Do not use your phone in class, he is very strict about that. He is very passionate about what he believes in so be prepared to not always agree with him.
Great prof!!! Easy A/B show up, pay attention, write down notes, he already curves the test so there really is no way of failing unless you just don't show up. Class consists of 5 tests he covers each test in class, Downside no phone in class he will kick you out and do not show up late for tests. Don't expect to know you grade until the very end
Study the notes he suggests you write down. You walk into the classroom to take notes for each test you take. I am not a good test taker, so I had to go deep with my studying. There is not much engagement in the classroom. He is serious and straight to the point. Thiers no assignments, just a few tests, and one essay.
