makes things a bit too simplistic
Good work Louis! A top notch performance.Class was a jam...good times good times
Learn a little, get a good mark!
worst teacher ever, not very smart, I could have tought the class better, Brutal
B-O-R-I-N-G, can you go through things any slower
Lectures are a sleeper, but exams are a joke and a very nice guy. Recommended!
Lots of notes, but all on overheads. Lots of memory work too.

Louis is a great teacher despite what others have said.

Good guys finish last
Very enjoyable! Knows his stuff. Very nice, and down to earth. Recomended 100%!
awesome teacher
If he knows anything, he's keeping it to himself
Friendly, helpful, informative. Good prof.
very friendly and helpful
Terrible, just terrible. Difficult to understand, tests are incredibly long for time permitted. Overall geography is a larger joke than i initially thought.
great guy, hard to understand, but you get used to it after the first week. easy to approach and talk to. if you do bad in this class with this prof then there if something very very wrong with you.
fairly easy to understand but not that interesting. The classes are very boring but if you like geography, the labs are quick and easy. He marks hard only because he doesn't explain what he wants very clearly.
Super nice guy, but kinda boring. I learned more from the text than I did from him.
Anybody that has trouble understanding Dr Awanyo is quite frankly up for some rough times ahead, because as far as accents go, his is pretty tame. Very smart, very thorough. Don't listen to the naysayers.
If I can, I will probably not take another class with him. That is mostly as I don't find that I enjoy his teaching style. I'm sure for some people, he's pretty easy. In 220, you just have to read the textbook.
has a tendency to go over the subject 50 times too many, gets pretty boring for people who pick up on things fast. Otherwise really nice and helpful.
Awesome Prof., a bit disorganized, but is really helpful and stimulates group discussions.
Louis is a super nice guy, but I had a hard time understanding him (accent.) Loved the doc on Rwanda!
The last person is so wrong. Awanyo barely has an accent and he's not at all hard to understand. Saying that he's hard to understand reeks of racism. Awanyo's a good prof, clear and his classes are interesting. Great readings!
Great guy, easy class...easy to understand, just go to class and you can get a good mark, highly reccomended...
Dr Awanyo is a good prof. Go to class, take notes( that he puts on slides...easy) and read over them. ask if you dont understand something and he will gladly help. Most aprochable proff. Very easy class just Put effort in to your assignments.
Awanyo is an excellent prof. He tries hard to make sure you understand everything, but you have to go to class. This class was brutally repetitive, but Awanyo did the best with it. I definitely recommend this prof to anyone, and hope I have him again for future classes.
A great prof all together. He is respective to students and wants you to do the best that you can do (gives alot of hints for exams, so come to class). But be sure to take a coffee to class... because you may nod off (material not that interesting and he likes to repeat himself).
Dr. Awanyo is an excellent prof. I highly recommend him.
I find him to be really good at explaining things and he makes the class interesting.
He is such a nice guy. He takes his time going over topics but it really helps the class to understand. The Rwanda documentary was really interesting. I recommend taking a class from Louis. He learnt the names of everyone in class and called us all by name. Extremely nice guy.
Very Good Professor, really wants students to succeed in the class. Very helpful if you have any questions. Assignments are marked fairly. Highly recommended.
I'm gonna have to give this guy a NO!!! The midterm was hell.... hell you hear me! Assignments were totally lame, where you researched everything yourself. The final was ok. Class is very boring... bring a small bat to wake yourself up. Use his webct notes, they were awesome.. don't worry, you won't have to study any longer than usual.
Found the class and the prof very interesting. He really knew his geography for this course. Unfortunately as much as I enjoyed the class, his grading system was unfair for some students. He was not clear or helpful when it came to the midterms and term paper. Too bad what I learned did not reflect in marks, disappointing outcome from a good class.
Louis is the cutest prof at the university! Also, he's great. He's very helpful, and the essay-based tests can be pretty tricky, but the assignments are there to help your mark. If you have to take the class, this is the guy to take it from.
Brutally boring... this class could have been extremely interesting but his unorganization and lack of clarity hindered him in the long run. Hard to take decent notes. Spend days and days on things that could have been done in ten minutes. With that said, he is a very nice man and it is a fairly easy class.
Class was very boring. Definitely talked too much on topics that could have been covered so fast. Didnt have assignments in the class anymore, just quizzes, which were not too hard. I found his final to be fairly hard.
I'm pretty sure it is safe to say that Louis is the man. Funny guy and a overall nice person. Lol he stresses that you have to read the text book... you don't at all. Puts his notes on line too which is a plus.
Louis is a good guy. People who are not that interested in geography will find his lectures boring but I didn't.
Show up and go through the motions. Prepare to be bored.
Louis is awesome. He does powerpoint lectures, which he puts online and expects you to print off and bring to class for notes. He says textbooks are required, however you use it once, if at all. Exams are rushed to write, but he gives the questions before, so have it memorized and you will do really good.I recommend him!
Louis is a great prof in my opinion. Very passionate about Geography which makes him very thorough in his explanations and very easy to approach with questions or comments. Exams are not difficult if you are prepared but can be very extensive, so be prepared to write a lot. Returns marks very promptly and marks very fair. Would take again 100%
Louis is great. Class was very long and repetitive but easy to follow and take notes. If you know the notes you'll pass the class. Easy but loooong exams. Expects detail. Would take another class!
One of the worst profs I've ever had. I can tell by the comments left on my paper that he didn't even read it entirely! Lectures were incredibly boring, tests were marked extremely hard. He tries to scare people into coming to class. I do not recommend.
While I learned a great deal from the class, he expected a lot from a 100 level class (e.g- ten page paper, in class essay which composed of two essays), and marked as if it was a 300 level course. I feel if I took classes from him later in my academic career, the difficulty would have been appropriate, but definitely not in my first or second year
The worst prof i had all year. He expects a ridiculous amount of information to be known for midterms (i.e. if you don't put EVERY single point from his powerpoint in your essay midterm you won't get higher than a 75) Class is unreal boring and makes you want to poke your eyes out. Louis doesn't make the material or class exciting at al.
Ridiculously hard class for a 100 level. I was putting more time into this elective than I was into my 300 level classes. 2 in class essays, a 10 page essay and a comprehensive final with multiple essays, plus he grades really harshly. Not recommended unless you like to memorize facts from powerpoint slides.
Louis Awanyo is possibly one of the worst profs on campus. He grades everything as if you were in a masters program, but it is a first year class. The content he focused on , which should have covered the whole world generally, was only two african countries for the majority of the semester. Do not take a class from him.
I thought Louis was great! I had no idea what geography was until I took his class. He builds on and layers info and lectures so it makes sense and is easy to retain. He is very clear about what he wants and expects. It's a little heavy and there was a lot of reading to do. I still enjoyed class. I'm registered for Geog120 with him next semester!
This class was awful. For a 100 level class, it was ridiculously hard. He marked like you were an expert and he did not mark fair. He doesn't leave constructive feedback and doesn't tell you why you received a bad mark. It says that the class is worldwide geography but all you learn about are two countries in Africa. I do not recommend this class.
This class was a mixed bag. The quizzes and tests are very easy, requiring only minimal studying. The final was pretty brutal, so you need to study your butt off. The research essay you do is fairly marked, so if you put in an honest effort you'll do fine. You don't need to read the text. The lectures can be very boring, so be aware of that!
Easy quizzes and midterms, 10 page paper that was fair enough, and then blindsided by a non-100 level final exam. Class should be called African Geography because that's what over half the class is about. Easy to follow powerpoint posted online. Didn't use the textbook.
Best teacher at luther college by far. I thoroughly enjoyed the section of the class where we talked about African geography.
Pretty repetitive, but also easy. If you can memorize and rewrite his powerpoints on the midterms and final you'll do really well.
Worst prof I have ever had. He does not at all respect students and laughs when we ask questions. Not at all a 100-level class at ALL, not engaging, does not care about student success. Apparently he's the best in the GEOG department which worries me
Worst prof I had this semester. Lectures are boring as hell, as he only goes over power point slides. He expects you to know more than what he teaches in class and he marks you like a 400 level student. If you want to write a 10 page essay and a 5 essay question exam and go through a boring lectures while receiving a low mark, then take his class.
Would not recommend taking this from Awanyo. Very boring and only really focused on Africa. 10 page paper on Sub-Saharan Africa agricultural production and productivity. Most boring topic ever and you don't have a choice. I did very well on the midterms and I can tell he significantly lowered my mark by grading me poorly on the essay and final.
Biggest regret so far this year was taking Geography 100 with Louis. He marked incredibly hard (near impossible to get over 80%), lectures are very long and very boring. 10 page essay was incredible boring to write about and it was graded harshly.
Very engaging, however he presented vague grading criteria for the 10 page essay on Sub-Saharan Africa. Mid terms are fine, if you know the material well. The final is a number of essays on blunt questions in which he marks highly... if you include large amounts of facts and VERY specifically defined points. Not a beginner class, text NOT needed .
If you're gonna take a Geo. class, DON'T TAKE HIM!! He is one of the worst profs i have ever seen. The midterms are extremely hard and way too long. The final exam was very long, had to write 6 essays in 3 hrs. I passed with a 66, but i know i could've done better since its an easy course. The lectures are really long and boring. Just DONT take him
First off Louis is a good professor. He does sometimes look down a little bit on students, but it usually comes after a plethora of poor questions. The first half of the semester is defining Geography. The second half is on South Africa, and Nigeria(very interesting). Did not buy textbook, studied notes and slides finished with an 84.
I hated him after his GEOG100, but after I took so many other classes I really started to appreciate his teaching. He teaches slowly and understandable. We had to do 2 midterms (he gave qns before tests ), 1 paper (11-13 p.) and a final. U can pick a topic for the essay. Prepare notes before tests, memorize them, and u will pass. Really easy class
It was the best class for me this semester! Come to class, write down his lectures, for the tests study slides and your notes (no textbook needed), and pick the topic for the essay you really like. He gives questions before tests and the final! His teaching style is very easy. Loved this class! I also learned a lot! Thanks Louis!
It was the best class for me this semester! Come to class, write down his lectures, for the tests - study slides and your notes (no textbook actually needed to pass), and pick the topic for the essay you really like. He gives questions before tests and the final! His teaching style is very easy. Loved this class! I also learned a lot! Thanks Louis
If you take development studies - take his class! I learned so much new information about development, about various development theories, which he explains in so easy way. I didn't read textbook as he insisted but still passed with a great mark. It's important to come to class and take good notes to pass his tests with A. Essay was long but OK
Best class I have ever taken at the U of R. Systematic and detailed. Social relevance of topics.
Dr. Awanyo is the best professor I have had. His lectures are not like the typical high school calibre first year courses. The course is a real university course. You learn the complexities of different regions of the world; not the TV stuff. He is honest in his grading; you get what you deserve and what you have put into the course.
Like any genuine university course do the following and you will excel: Carefully read the course outline; pay attention to the professor's instructions and suggestions; do the required readings and carefully and in details; write detailed notes when he lectures instead of sitting down with your arms crossed or texting; study well.
I just got my marks for the class and I am pleased with it. Dr. Awanyo clearly stated in the first class what students need to do to get excellent grades. I followed the instructions. I read the required reading materials very well, made detailed notes, studied them well, didn't miss a class. Remember the university is not high school.
This prof is the best prof. I have ever had. He is very rigorous in his lectures and marking. I am glad I didn't pay any attention to false and mischievous reviews.
Very good professor and his courses are not difficult (I took quite a few his courses), but don't take any morning classes with him. He hates when students skip and people do actually skip a lot when it's an early morning class. His frustration and anger about some students' irresponsibly affects grades and a load of work of the whole class.
Easy and good lecturer. 2 midterms, 1 paper, 1 final. I took about 5 of his classes and noticed that the lower number of students enrolled in class, the greater your mark will be. He also make a class much easier and isn't a tough grader if there aren't many students. So if you see that there are only 4-12 students signed up for the class - take it
Awful class
Louis is a down to earth prof. who can take boring material and make it captivating and engaging. I took a lot from his class and he presents material in a way that is easy to relate to real life situations. I would definitely take his classes again as he clearly explains everything and had given me the best feedback Ive had all semester! Oct 2017.
good guy, really cares
Great guy. Actually cares about students and gives interesting points of view and angles on topics in class. Plus he has a great sense of humor.
One of the best university professors. He provides very comprehensive insights into various regions of the world and let's you understand what life is like for people in the regions. Teaches us how to analyze complicated topics and to be critical thinkers. You are not entitled to any grade in this course. You have to pull your weight by reading.
This is the first university class that met my expectations from high school. Unlike most high schools in Regina my school really prepared us for university. All of my university classes were glorified high school classes except Professor Awanyo's. There were required readings you had to do to deeply appreciate the lectures. Thorough and detailed.
I didn't know the subject matter of Political Geography but took the course because the title looked interesting. And did I make the right decision! We covered the areas/regions of focus of Political Geography--from Geostrategic realms to sub-divisions of states, the Syrian Conflict, Boko Haram, the New colonialism, New Cold War, New World Order.
This is the 2nd course I have taken with this prof. He is hands-down the best professor I have had in this university. Stereotypes about the 3rd world are systematically destroyed, objective and critical analysis of the region is provided and policies that have worked or not worked are thoughtfully discussed. Great course for global awareness.
The lectures were very good and interesting. We discussed population, urbanization, development, cultural, and environmental geography. I learnt a lot about the Rwanda genocide, different perspectives about whether population in the developing world is as big a problem as it is made out to be. Really good and caring professor.
Dude's awesome, he has the most quirky sense of humor ever and will always help. His class really opened up my brain to a whole new way of perceiving things. Great guy.
Amazing teacher. Engaging and presents material clearly and is very open to helping students. Awesome guy
Dr. Awanyo is very knowledgeable, but is one of the driest professors I've ever had. You can easily get away with never showing up if you do the readings. The lectures are not only boring, but repetitive, unrelated to test material and an overall waste of time. Easy class if you can read on your own.
Hes a god
This class was the most boring class I have ever taken. His lectures are basically of him talking in circles and repeating the exact same thing over again. It's too bad because the course itself was very interesting but he completely ruined it
Definitely would recommend taking a class with Dr. Awanyo, especially if it is a small class. Midterms and final are essentially just a regurgitation of his lectures so showing up to class and taking good notes really helps. He is a very fair marker so as long as you put in the effort you'll finish the class with a good mark.
Lectures can get pretty dry but are essential to attend bc his slides are vague and he explains in class. Lots of extra reading but exams and paper were not hard as long as you put in the effort. Had 2 midterms, a research paper, and final.
Good prof, Knows his stuff, clearly takes pride in his knowledge but I have never fallen asleep in a lecture until his. I found his lectures hard to follow and hard to get interested in despite the great content, i think his teaching style is just too monotone for such a captivating subject, Many times I have found myself dozing off in his classes
Probably one of the most boring classes I've ever taken. He clearly knows his material but the way he lectures is so dry it's hard to be interested and engaged in the class. Showed up just to show up but honestly I could've done without going at all.
If you want a teacher who barely explains the essay worth 50% of your final grade, and drops your 97% to a 78% and never responds to emails. This is the teacher for you...
Louis is a very passionate professor about the course content. The course breakdown is 2 midterms (15% each), a research paper (30%), and a final exam (40%). The grading on the research paper is fair and his multiple choice midterms are not difficult with sufficient studying. Dont bother with the textbook as his notes are the focal point of exams.
Dr. Awanyo may have a heavy class, but it is a heavy subject. I really enjoy taking this class from him and he is a very fair and nice person. I would recommend him for any course he is teaching.
Prof Awanyo was very thorough. His course was lecture heavy, but he had supporting slides which made following along very easy. He is a great teacher and makes sure you understand what he is talking about before he moves to the next topic. Tough grader, but he makes his expectations very clear.
He's a good prof, I learned a lot! He's a little dry, but come with coffee and you'll survive. Take good notes, he lectures at a good pace. Our readings were physical chapters from books you couldn't borrow, so you had to go to the library to read them there which isn't super accessible. Otherwise, I liked the class and him as a prof!
Louis knows what he's talking about and provides good slides for lectures. However, his lectures can be dull and over time the classes feel longer. The main issue with Louis is he is a very hard marker. Still trying to figure out how I got a 2.44/3 on a short answer qustion.
Only prof I know that doesnt allow questions before or after class. Extremely hard grader with unclear assignment instructions. Lectures are an absolute drag and gives the longest midterms with only an hour to complete. You'll also be waiting weeks to get marks back. I need a lot more geo classes & I will be avoiding Awanyo like the plague.
I believe that if you are interested in the material, this class will be a lot easier for you as he does drag on during lectures. He expects a lot out of detail and analysis in the writing assignments/short answer questions on exams. His marking is insanely hard. Even if you have a background in writing, it's still not enough.
One of the most boring classes I have taken in University. Lectures drag out and it becomes impossible to keep focus. Extremely tough marker and quizzes are way too long for the amount of time given. Would not recommend this prof to anyone.
Worst Professor ever, Toughest Grader. Biggest Regret, wasted my money, time and mental health.
Unfortunately I needed this class for a credit. I wish I chose a different prof for this course. His lectures are so boring, drag on forever. It is extremely hard to focus in class because of how monotone and slow and boring he makes this class. Exams are difficult for the amount of time. Lecture heavy. So much info to remember. Super hard marker.
Tough grader
He is a very tough grader. Be prepared to write, write, write on tests and the exam. You will barely have enough time to do them. If you do not show up to class, you will be very far behind. Take notes on everything, this class requires you to remember a ridiculous amount of information.
Professor Awanyo's lectures can be dry, but engaging with the material and using tools like unstuck ai can help. He's a tough grader, so stay on top of assignments and readings. Overall, put in the effort and you'll learn a lot.
