He is the most unhelpful teacher. He would make fun of people who asked questions in class and then wonder why no one would volunteer to answer his questions, and then suggest it was because we were stupid. And he mumbles in class and then accuses people who ask him to repeat it of not listening.
He's the worst. Avoid him at all costs.
BORING, but only 3 easy tests

This professor is just not good at conducting a class. Especially one that was held on FRIDAYS from 1:00-4:00 pm! Who wants a three hour class on a Friday afternoon? I rated him somewhat difficult only because I found it difficult to care about the material due to his lack of cohesiveness in explaining ANYTHING. He also assumed everyone in the class was immediately going on to grad school, and so he would say condescending things like, "Well, that kind of attitude won't cut it if you're a grad stud
Don't get me wrong, the man is bright. He's obvioulsy been to loads of places and he SHOULD be teaching anthrolopogy. He just doesn't know how to get through to people. BORING! But a seemingly good guy. I stopped listening to him. I listen to my headphones and just copy down everything on the power points. LAME.
THIS GUY IS TERRIBLE, HE ALWAYS PLAYS WITH HIS MANLY MANE. ITS ANNOYING HES BORRING JUST LIKE THE GUY FROM FERRIS BUELERS DAY OFF....BUEELER.......BUEEEELLLLLEEER.... HIS LECTURES ARE DRYER THAN MY UNCLE'S THANKSGIVING TURKEY.
His class is so completely boring. There is no teacher-student interaction. He doesn't encourage us to get interested and all he does is have a powerpoint everyday. And he changes the slide before you can finish writing it down. He is a brilliant man when it comes to anthropological study, but he is a crappy teacher. Try not to get him and if you do, read everything and try to pay attention, that's all the advice I have.
HE sux too
This guy sucks so bad, vacuums run in terror. But seriously, falling asleep is common, on the first test because no one gave a damn, there were 66 F's 55 D's...what does that say about your teaching? Pray to the teaching gods you do not get him...I REPEAT DO NOT GET FORLINE!!!!! Its easy if you pay attention, hard if you dont give a****.
Honestly, he does seem to know a lot about Anthropology, but when it comes to teaching...NO WAY! Your class time consists of a powerpoint and lots of notes. There is no motivation to continue in Anthropology, much less in that class. His voice is incredibly boring and monotone. Please, dont take this class unless your gluttin for punishment.
Sucks
Really knows his stuff. Has been lots of places. But you got to pay attention to his lectures.
He's got a lot of interesting stories to tell about Latin America. We got a good picture of the region. But you got to study hard for his tests.
You guys have got to give him a break. He definitely knows his stuff, and the thing to remember is that if you study enough, he's forgiving in terms of grading. Stop relying on teachers to inspire you to want to learn - of course it's a plus if they do, but you're responsible for your own priorities. Suck it up.
He is a good prof yet you have to earn your grade with him. I agree with the other comment. You can't expect profs to learn for you!
Good teacher. Knows his subject well. His tests are hard but if you read the text you can do well. He also adjusts the final grade if you work hard.
Aweful teacher. Do NOT take this teacher. If you can do anyting in college right, it would be by not taking anthropology 101 with this teacher. he does not help and does not care. he also doesnt not repond to email and study guides are horible. reconsider another semester or tmcc before you take him as a professor. one
Forline is perhaps the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire academic career. He is very smart as an anthropologist, but he has no business teaching. He play's favorites and there is no rhyme nor reason to his grading scheme. I cannot believe that after all of his teaching reviews he has not been fired. Avoid him like the plague! Be warned!

Dr. Forline will often ask questions of the class, but no one in the room will understand what he is asking. He is very knowledgeable in his field, but needs to learn to make the materials easier for non-experts to understand.
I thought he tried and gave the best effort he could. The class wasnt hard if you just studied. His review handout is very helpful. Good teacher
Dr. Forline was sooo boring. Anthropology such an interesting subject, but he made me not want to go to class. He didn't make it easy for the students to understand the material.
Before taking this class I was interested in Anthropology, he made this subject so boring! Find a different professor if you can!
He is the worst instructor on this planet. He is not even helpful or understanding just an arrogant old kook who should stay doing his research, there he shines I hope. He is unable to teach and educate students of their tasks, gives one the impression of being a low-life when participating in class, is incoherent in his teaching 'method'.
I went into this class very interested in the subject, but after a few days i had no interest . I mean this guy was dull. Really the guy would just stand there and read the slides word for word adding side comments that had very little relevance to the lecture. If I was you I would get another professor if you still can cause this guy is a joke!
Cool dude
Theory in Anthropology should be required at the 100 or 200 level in this department. This has been rated by an individual member of Psi Beta and Phi Theta Kappa. I would recommend for future students to take this class with at least a year of self study in the area of theory before taking this course.
Nice person and very helpful, but not a great professor.
Decent professor who loves his subject, but has no charisma to teach with. Makes things clear with slides and videos, but only reads the slides and offers no new info. Soft-spoken and willing to help. Offers extra-credit, but tests can be hard since multiple-choice seem to have more than one right answer.
This guy should go and teach some other place. He is unable to teach and has no people skills. He gives tasks without explanation and then grades you based on anything but the context of your work. He is the worst that has ever happened to the department and I hope that he will be leaving soon because he is killing the fun in education!
I thought it was a very informative and well taught class. If I were him, I'd want to be back in Brazil, he probably gets more respect there than he does from a bunch of snotbrained college kids.
Very poor teaching skills, very uncapable
He isn't that great of a professor in some classes, but when it comes to socio-cultural classes he knows his stuff. He is helpful too if you meet with him outside of class.
Humm...where to begin, at times when he is lecturing it is readily apparent that he has no idea of what the slide is about - perhaps actually prepping for lecture would be a good idea, no? His teaching is a disservice...you would be better off by just reading the book and never going to class.
REALLY MONOTONE---not THAT easy for being a beginning class... drones on and on and on and on..nice guy tho just probably not meant for teaching, freshman and beginners at least
He is monotone at times and does appear to be more internally thoughtful (more feedback would be nice). However, he is extremely knowledgeable in cultural anthropology and is very helpful outside of class. If you are incapable of doing/thinking for yourself then don't take his classes. Needs to improve his test study guides.
Well to his credit my class was huge so it must have been difficult to stand in front of 200 kids talking about this stuff. Pretty laid back, different teaching style, a little monotonous but I could handle paying attention for an hour because the content was interesting. I enjoyed the projects. There is extra credit. So-so class
Well at least you don't have to go to class
I have Dr.Forline for my tuesday and thurday classes and i have to say he is AWEsome. He really knows his stuff and he is definately willing to help you learn.I read some of his other comments and have concluded that all those who said he was bad were lazyy and unmotivated and havn't realized that they were in COLLEGE.I highly recomend him!!!
Very dull, but he has improved. He goes over things more now.
He tries very hard to keep the class interested in the topic and throws in a couple jokes, however be prepared for a classroom of students who are distruptive which makes it harder to pay attention in his classroom.
Professor Forline is very knowledgeable about Latin America and I learned a lot. The class is what you make it, and you have to study.
Professor Forline is such a nice guy, but he isn't the greatest professors. Lectures were disorganized and I ended up more confused than before. The readings were outdated and not related to class. It was a disappointment.
His class was very interesting, but his exams covered so many small details that I found it difficult to cover everything that he does. Much of his exams aren't discussed in class, so you do need to read on your own time. Also, his "optional" readings usually end up on the exam. For my class, it was Born in Blood and Fire, which really got me my A.
He is an amazing researcher, just not the best at lecturing or preparing you for tests. The class itself is easy, no homework just 3 tests and one presentation. The material was hard and he is not very clear on what is needed or what will be needed to study on the test.
He's very knowledgable and passionate about what he talks about, and he tries a lot to engage students. But its scary easy to zone out. His voice is soft and monotone.
Class is really easy, you really don't have to do the readings to pass.
Professor Forline's lectures are extremely dull. His voice is pretty much monotone the entire time and no one really bothers to participate, no matter how many questions he asks. The class is relatively easy and you can do well on the tests (they're all online and at-home) without reading too much.
He is a very nice guy but it is hard to get a hold of him so you'll rely on your TA's a lot. Takes attendance by giving pop quizzes. He is very hard to understand. Whenever I would try to listen and take notes I had no idea what to write down because I didnt know what he was rambling about. The tests are at home, online. so easy but they're timed.
His lectures are extremely dry. It's just one of those classes that I dread going to. I got to hand it to him, he does know his stuff, but he doesn't get it across well. He gives good study guides and that's the only reason I'm passing this class
Forline is a clown; he has a different sense of humor but he's funny. Super easy class. All the tests are online, so you can use your book. I skipped class a ton but there are 3 pop quizzes throughout the semester for attendacne. Really easy projects. 3 tests and a final.
Forline is the worst professor I have ever taken at the University. He was extremely boring, made sexual references in class, was sexist at times, and he was almost never on time to class. At first I was excited to take Anthro 101 but Forline ruined it for me and everyone else. Don't take him if you can avoid him.
You were expected to read the chapter before coming to lecture and then he would highlight what was the most important, which ended up being everything anyways. Does 5 pop quizzes for attendance grades. Participation in discussion is necessary. His TA's do a very nice job making study guides and practice exams for students!
Had him for two classes this semester and while his classes were a little boring for me I think it is due to my little interest in the topic. Notes are not posted online, and test a very difficult.
Easiest class, don't need to show up to lecture to pass. Tests are all online and study guides provide all the answers.
Anth 101 is a huge lecture class. The class is very easy. There is not much interaction with Professor Forline. Lectures are not mandatory and are mostly pointless, unless its a film. Students are able to use their books and notes for the tests and quizzes which are timed. If you have the vocab and watch the films you will pass the tests.
He's very monotonous, but if you read the textbook you basically pass the class. Straight shooter. Lectures are extremely boring, but loved my TA.
His lectures are so boring and to be honest you only need to show up for the discussion section and do the assignments online. I don't like his lecture style at all but I love this class because of how easy it is. Quizlet is also your friend.
Yeah so if you do the reading that's the entire class. Forline's lectures are LITERALLY going over that weeks readings in the least interesting way. Nothing is really added which isn't from the book. You'll notice a pretty rapid drop off of attendance. All the tests are online. Completely unrelated, quizlet exists... Go to discussion, read, you'll do well.
This class was not my favorite. The lectures are long and monotonous mostly because he reads straight out of the book. The discussion sections are where you get most of your information and grades but overall this class was super easy. All tests and quizzes are online.
Probably the easiest class I took this semester. If you do the reading yourself there's really no reason to show up to lecture everyday-he essentially covers the same stuff. He is a funny guy but it's hard to pay attention to him because his voice is very monotonous. I think the class could benefit from more student participation.
It is 100% not necessary to go to class. All tests are online and you can google the questions and get the exact answer on quizlet. I went to lecture twice all semester and ended up with a 97%
This is a really easy class to pass because everything is online so you don't need to go to lecture, just discussion. Forline himself is really boring to listen to lecture and super sexist. Began making sexist comments from day one. If you just do the readings, take online quizzes/tests on time and go to discussion you'll get an A. Only one essay.
For someone who works and takes classes, take him!!! Has the best course outline and assignments! It will be a great semester for you!
I never attended class and passed with flying colors. All tests and quizzes are online. When I did attend the lectures grazed the material. I got more from reading the book than actually attending lectures. If anything attend dicussion since it counts toward your final grade.
His lectures are boring. He's obviously experienced in Anthropology, but some people just shouldn't be professors. This class has 3 exams that are essay based (3 essays for each exam) each worth 30%, with film responses accounting for 10% of your grade. He offers extra credit but it's so hard to come to this class...
No one really shows up to this class because you don't have to. The thing is that all the quizzes are online on quizlet, so no one actually reads the books or does anything, or shows up. Basically just make sure you know when the quizzes are, and make sure you show up to the discussion. Other than that, it's a pretty easy A!
Exams and quizzes completely online! If you're taking this as an anthropology major then he's a really great instructor and knows what he's talking about all the time. Otherwise, no need to show up other than discussion, which is mandatory. I never read or watched the films but you should if you have a stingy TA. Easy A.
Looked here before taking the class. Was told that attendance was not mandatory if you just show up to discussion. Went to every discussion but no lectures and had a 95 in the class; until my discussion TA gave me a 66% for my discussion grade. Ended with a B and never went; but make sure your TA is decent.
This class is the easiest class I've taken. There's 3 exams and they are all done on canvas. All of the answers are online. You have to show up to your discussion, but the lectures are fine to skip. I have a 94% and I've been to the lecture twice
Most boring professor I've ever had. Save yourself from misery. Monotone voice and he cracks really bad jokes. He reads off slides. He said there were pop quizzes but hasn't passed one out yet. Discussion is a big part of your grade.
This is the easiest class that I have taken so far at UNR, and im going into my 3rd year. He claims that he does pop quizzes for lecture attendance, but he hasn't done a single one all year. Ive gone to the lecture like 3 times and i have a 97%. All exams are online. All you have to do is show up to your discussion and its an easy A
Dr. Forline'c class is an easy A. If you have to take anthro but aren't super interested in it, this is the class to take. It's boring, but easy. Participation only matters for your one discussion class a week. You can go to the lectures if you want, but the only teaching that is really being done is in the discussion. Quizes/ tests are easy.
This professor was so boring. He rambles on about nothing. He makes freshman buy 4 different things for a 101 class. Makes attendance part of your grade even though there is no point go going, because I did not learn anything. Take another Professor if possible.
Prof Forline regularly showed up late to zoom classes, never put a single grade into canvas, and is not an engaging professor. Do not take a class from him!
Not too bad! Lectures were a bit flat or uneventful; however, his dad sense of humor made the class more bearable. He knows what he's talking about and he follows a powerpoint (boring sometimes). Lectures were also always recorded which helped for covid. He also played guitar and sang for us for "music ethnology". Nice guy and made the class easy.
He clearly loves what he teaches, but unfortunately possesses the most monotone voice I've ever heard from a professor. If you can push through, you'll learn a lot and understand the background behind modern anthropology better.
I took his class during my fall of 2023 and his monotone voice made me shrivel up and die inside. Bring 10 redbulls and attending his lecture class is literally not neccessary. Just go to the discussion classes and I promise you will pass his class,
He has you watch films and do write ups as homework. At first the class attendance was not mandatory and then half way through the semester he made it mandatory or you would lose points. He gives you a schedule for the semester but does not tell you when homework is due unless you go to class.
We are less than a week away from the final exam, and he hasn't posted a single grade despite promises that he would email us our in-progress grades. His lectures are rambly and difficult to follow. The class consists of five write-ups based on documentaries watched in class, and three non-cumulative exams. I would recommend literally anyone else.
Prof. Forline is an overall okay professor. His lectures are admittingly very boring but not required. This class could honestly be taken asynchronously if it weren't for the occasional in-class film write-up and the required discussion sections. Quizzes and exams are open note and done online, so they are very easy.
I would suggest that you go to your discussion classes, and go to lectures when there are movies days but even if you don't he will post links to the movies.
