She is a great teacher. She has an accent, but it didn't bother me!
When you take hope-weeks, you're probably going be "hope"-less. She goes really fast, and she avoids uploading her power points; so you gotta be friends with someone who writes notes fast.
This class is really hard, but she does give you an automatic grade of a "C" if you do all the homework and get an "A" on it all. So you can pretty much tank everything and still pass.
She just reads over powerpoints- that one can recieve at the begining of the year, making it hard to come to class especially since she only just reads the powerpoints with hardly any further explaination.
She has a British accent, but it's not too distracting. Class consisted of me frantically trying to keep with her in notes as she read through her powerpoint presentations. All of the learning I did in this class came from attending the SI sessions (which I HIGHLY recommend, by the way). If you're taking 1307 I'd recommend Gellene over Hope-Weeks.
This class is basically a "teach yourself" course. She blazes through the powerpoints, which are all over the place, and does not break down much. She teaches the class as though we know everything already and this is a review. The OWL homework teaches you all you need to know. Her grading scale does help you reach a better grade. 77-89 is a B.
She has a British accent and she graduated from Cambridge, which is pretty cool. This is a learn-it-yourself type of class, so I would highly recommend attending SI sessions and reading the textbook for an A. Also, prepare for ALOT of homework. The lectures arent very helpful, however don't skip class, because she gives pop quizzes.
Honestly I would recomend you take it over the summer at another school. The only awsome thing is that its hard to fail if you do all of your homework. If you got a 90 or above on your hw then a 50 was raised to a 70.
This class is super hard because the teacher expects you to learn things by yourself. All she does is run through a powerpoint which can be very unclear at times. Expect to teach yourself everything. She also is not understanding and can be rude at times. Just avoid this professor if possible.
She barely teaches at all. All she does is fly through a powerpoint. You HAVE to go to class because she gives pop quizzes-which dont even ask questions on what she covers(they're very hard and confusing). Everything I learned in this class, i learned through the SI leader. it helps a ton. especially the test reviews! i hear Hanna is a better prof.
She is VERY hard. I learned everything from google, SI session, and tutors and even some of them couldn't do my homework. All she does is read through powerpoints really fast. You have to teach yourself everything. The tests are impossible because she never prepares you. You have homework all the time online and she gives pop quizes alot. BAD BAD!!
Dr.Weeks first of all, is from Great Britain so she has a British accent. She is very intelligent on the subject of chemistry. There is no mandatory attendance but there are pop-quizzes so a win-loss situation there. She goes through the lectures pretty quick too. Alot of people thought she was difficult but going to S.I (supplementary instruction) sessions help out ALOT.
Dr. Hope-Weeks is an excellent teacher. Yes, her class is challenging if you don't study or do the homework, but all college classes are that way. She is always willing to meet after class in her office to help with any problems. And, she will stay and help you as long as you need it. I learned A LOT from her, and she is my favorite professor here.
Some people thought she was difficult but in all honesty, I thought the class was easy. Here's a TIP: do OWL (online homework you will do). Some people hate OWL, but in my opinion this is the main way I studied to prepare me for my tests. I received an A.
Overall I thought she was a great professor. Yes, she went quickly through slides, but this is a college class, not 2nd grade. If you keep up with OWL (online homework)and commit to studying and attending SI, you will do just find in this class.
Very hard teacher, goes through all slides very fast, with a laser pointer, expects you to know everything. Did not have an SI instructor for the first test and a half. BAD BAD BAD
This was her first semester teaching descriptive inorganic and she makes the class much harder than it is suppose to be. I have talked to students who took Dr.Bradley's course in the Spring of 2012 and he was a much better teacher than Hope-Weeks. Avoid at all costs!!!
horrible. She is all over the place. She just pointz her laser at the slides and reads the slides off (made by the book publisher)and then complains how the book sucks. I would not recommend anyone take her for chem3301 take whittisly when its offered in the spring again cause Hope-weeks shows no mercy
She's a great professor- honestly THIS IS COLLEGE. It's not supposed to be easy. So yes, it's a challenging course. You learn a lot and she's extremely helpful and very nice. If you put in the work, you'll get the grade you want. I recommend her! I wouldn't love chemistry if she hadn't been my professor.
Let me be frank here, i honestly think TTU made a mistake allowing her to teach desriptive chem. This is the class which kept me from graduating. Instead of this class i should have taken another course. she was setting people up for failure from the start. No matter how hard you study for this class in the end she gives you whatever she feels like
I haven't finished the class yet, but I already enjoy it. 1307 is meant to be a chem class for engineers/chem majors etc, and Hope-weeks knows this. So she does expect you to get on OWL and learn what you need to learn- not a big deal. I'm finding that she is putting good effort into making the info as exciting as possible. which makes me like her.
class is hard, she will help you out if you are willing to come in. The lectures were confusing, but the prof tried to make them interesting.
The people who are saying she is horrible weren't willing to put in the work. As long as you attend class and actually study, it's a good class. She is an excellent professor who is extremely knowledgeable. Also, she's incredibly nice and willing to help you whenever you need it! She truly cares about her students and it shows, AS LONG AS YOU CARE
Going to class helps a lot with understanding, though she just reads through the slides (and she sends them to you). Hard class, ok teacher.
The optional clicker section is the best ways to get a good grade. You will be shown how the material is tested with practice exams and given chapter reviews. Hope-Weeks also gives out helpful practice problems. The key to an A is understanding how to do all the practice problems not trying to understand all the slides.
A decent number of people failed when I took it. You have to be a slacker or expect it to be a "blow-off" to fail. The tests are very easy if you put in the effort to actually read the book. I don't recommend it if you don't typically apply yourself or have struggled with chemistry in the past.
She is one of the best- you will learn a lot in the class, and she's always willing to help out. Best advice- go to her office hours!
Her British accent definitely makes this class more enjoyable.
She's wonderful. You have to be willing to put in the work, but she is one of the best professors tech has
The material for the class sucks, no matter who you take it with. She does her best to make the class enjoyable and she keeps it interesting. She has a British accent, which makes it even better. And she's extremely helpful in office hours.
She is one of the best general chemistry professors. For starters, she has a British accent. She makes little jokes during class which make it easier to attend. She does a ton of examples at the end of every chapter, which really prepare you for the test. She also encourages you to come to office hours. I would highly recommend her.
definitely take this professor if you want to actually learn chemistry. she is incredibly knowledgable about the subject and she truly wants you to learn it. she does examples on the overhead and prepares you for the test. go to her office hours! and go to the SI sessions!
She is very nice but the class material is very difficult and she rushes through it and you get lost very easy. Take other teacher if possible.
The class sucks, but she's doing a good job teaching us the material. Tests are hard, definitely study for them! Go to class and her office hours- helps a lot.
Tough class taught by a tough professor. There are 4 tests throughout the semester plus a term paper and homeworks. Tests vary in difficulty. Study hard and go to class. You must go to her to get any help, don't expect any freebies. Overall a good learning experience.
Extremeley good professor, probably the best i have had at tech in over three years. Super passionate about chemistry and very knowledgeable, as well as enjoyable. Would take her again if i could. Tests are difficult and lots lf work in this class, but if you go to her office hours every week and read the book and study you WILL get an A.
She's a great lecturer, however, she's not technilogically minded. She finally started using blackboard... Her tests are very hard, and she's a very tough grader. She'll try to work with you though.
Honestly, if you do not understand chemistry do not take her class. Reads off the slide and expect you to understand. Do not go into details during the lecture. Three midterms and they are really hard. Random pop-quizzes so do not want to miss class. Do not take this class if you do not have an understanding of chemistry, you will fail
Dr. Hope-Weeks likes to be acknowledged as such, and has a rather heavy accent so beware of that! Attendance is not mandatory although she does like to give in class pop quizzes for extra credit so be ready for that! She lectures off her slides with is both book heavy and knowledge based she try to make it as entertaining as Chemistry can be!
By default, all chem classes you should read the textbook and all chem I students take the same (hard) tests. No curves on test. Random pop-quizzes worth 5% of grade. Homework every week, but doable. I wish I would've gone to SI sooner in the semester. She's very knowledgeable and entertaining in class
If you do not show up to class, you will not pass. She is very kind and caring. When I did not understand material she got very creative in explaining it to me. One day she even brought playdoh into her office to teach me.
I am mediocre at Chemistry. However I am doing much better than I thought I would be doing than thought. She really does care about the success of her students. But come to class because she does have a lot of pop quizzes and even if you have no idea what is going on you will get half credit fro showing up. Prepare to do some homework though.
Hope-weeks is a pretty good professor. I gave her the benefit of the doubt with a 4. She is easy to understand and her accent makes class a lil more fun. I have never been good a Chem, but I stopped attending classes after 2 weeks and still got a C with her grading scale. So if you actually try and attend class you have no excuse to fail.
Dr. Hope-Weeks is okay. In my opinion, she did not do a great job explaining concepts. I would often leave classes confused. While yes, it is chemistry which is obviously difficult, I believe it could have been less difficult if she explained things better. She also loves to give pop quizzes so go to class!
Absolutely loved this professor. She is very funny, caring, and goes the extra mile to be sure her students succeed. I was scared to take chemistry, but her office hours really helped me. She was willing to work around my schedule and I appreciated that. This class is hard, but Doctor Hope-Weeks makes this class enjoyable. Take her class!!!!!!!!!
Chemistry is very tough no matter who teaches it. She goes very fast in class but tries to make students understand. This class is very tough but Chegg Study goes a long ways.
Chemistry is just really hard in general but she's a good teacher to take it with. There are a total of four exams and I only passed one. I still passed the class though! You really have to put a lot of work and studying to pass.
Dr. Hope-Weeks is a great professor, and she really wants her students to succeed. Although she reads off the powerpoint slides during lectures, she goes over practice test problems before exams to help you be prepared. She has pop quizzes, and homework due every week. Just study and work hard and go to her office hours if you ever need any help.
Honestly, Hope-Weeks is one of the greatest professors I have had. She truly cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. She tries as hard as she can to make difficult material easier to comprehend. This class is difficult, but with office hours and SI's, it becomes relatively easier.
I love this professor. I am terrible at chemistry, but after going to her office hours, I improved my exam grades! She's ready to help students and has office hours right after class. There's homework due every week, but as long as you don't wait until the last minute it's fine. She goes quickly through her lectures quickly so be ready to study.
during a covid pandemic, she chose to increase the level of difficulty on the final exam. She has been completely non understanding during these tough times.
Under Covid-19 circumstances I think it is very inappropriate to change the message of delivery of exams to made it difficult to succeed. Professor was not understanding or accommodating whatsoever. These are difficult times on their own. Final exam was changed to free response. You put 75.59 & answer 76? Wrong! Very disappointed. Do NOT take.
Dr. Hope-Weeks is one of the best professors I've had; while saying that, this class is one of the hardest as well. Don't attempt to take notes in class, she goes so fast it's hard to jot down so come to class ready. This semester COVID-19 happened and we were switched to online and it has been rough especially with the final being open response.
I was pretty terrible at chemistry in high school ,however, Hope-Weeks really made it work. Ngl She talks fast but she tried to help as much as she could during pop quizzes. She could've been more generous about the final exam due to coronavirus. Online lectures wasn't the same as the face to face lectures. You def need to study hard enough.
Dr. Hope-Weeks is a nice professor, but honestly wouldnt recommend taking her for upper-level chemistry courses if you arent a chemistry major. She talks a lot about helping her general chemistry students, but she kind of leaves you on your own if youre in her upper-level chemistry course. Her tests are really hard, so I suggest you study a lot.
Chemistry sucks in general but Dr. Hope-Weeks tried to keep the class interesting. Never opened the textbook. Took the class during COVID and she changed the final exam to make it harder since it was on black board. Used a lockdown browser but not proctorio. If you do the work and study for the tests you should have no problem passing the class
Terrible. Half the class is online, half the class is in person (covid). She spends so much time writing on the whiteboard every class, and the online students can't even see it. So we sit there confused the whole time. She forgets that we don't have the experience she does and expects us to just know things we have never even been taught. Horrible
Hope-Weeks is utterly terrible. Even when you study the concepts for weeks, she will find ways to fail you. She claims to give partial credit on tests, but that's a lie. She is literally looking to fail as many as she can. She refuses to use basic technology to actually write down stuff we need to know for the online part. NEVER TAKE HER CLASS.
Worst professor in my college experience. Assigned readings dont match lecture or tests/quizzes. Lectures dont match quizzes/tests. Regurgitates slides from book. Gives no examples on how to do any of the problems. Acts like we should know things shes never taught. It seems she thrives off failing students. Unreasonably difficult class. AVOID.
Quizzes, 3 papers, 2 exams, and homework. She will also complain because nothing is multiple choice so she has to grade it all by hand. She doesn't believe in curves and is just very whiny about everything. Her lectures aren't very clear and no one in the class is happy with her. Honestly, just avoid her. She'll seem great at first but she's not.
Professor Hope-Weeks is highly intelligent and interesting. Although, she is extremely inconsiderate. She told my class to email her to set up office hours, then she doesn't even respond half of the time. She teaches general chemistry as well and most of her time is devoted to those students (her words) so I don't know why I'm paying her.
Terrible professor. Completely unsympathetic to the struggles that online learning presents to students. Says she offers partial credit on exams, but does not. Teaches 100 mph from PowerPoint slides, but will test on every concept she even briefly mentioned. Does not understand technology, makes distance learning unbelievably difficult for online.
I liked Dr. Hope-Weeks, but she did not seem to understand the challenges that COVID presents to students. Whereas most other professors curved their exams so that they were on par with other years, she just seemed disappointed in the low scores. Maybe take another semester, but she is a 4.0 buster in this COVID era.
I've never put in so much effort just to learn nothing and get such terrible grades. 3 writing assignments (one of them 6 pages) simply summarizing scientific articles is 100% useless. Is this an English class? You learn nothing by doing that. The quizzes/test constantly have things I have never seen before. I just want this class to be over asap.
Her voice is the worst thing to EVER exist. Please do not take this class unless it is the very very very super last option. She grades very harshly and hates giving points. (Doesn't give points for correct answers because she is "too lazy" and your should have got it correct the first time(whatever that means)).
Dr. Hope-Weeks is the worst professor I've ever had. Her lecture PowerPoints literally don't even make sense. She puts things on them that are not correct so its very hard to know what even right. She only gave use 2 exams and expects us to know everything then she doesn't even curve them.. not even during the pandemic when everything is so hard.
Dr. Hope-Weeks has to be the most inconsiderate professor I've ever had. She flies through her ppt slides and has a very bad teaching style and sometimes the students online couldn't even see her screen when she was teaching... I missed an A by 0.8 points and made sure she knew who I was and showed extreme effort and she refused to do anything.
I understand this class is pretty hard and by no means did I expect it to be easy. However, my rating of Professor Hope-Weeks is what it is due to her flying through power point slides with very little explanation along with being unable to adapt to the campus's hybrid modality for students that don't feel safe going to in-person lectures.
This class was hard, I really had to work to get my A. Attend lectures if you can't there are recordings on Blackboard, do your homework( they are long. but are worth 15% of your grade so they help :). 4 exams including finals. Start study for exams ahead of time, attend the SI sessions, and go to her office hours they are really helpful!
You have to study if you want to do well in any chemistry class. The SI sessions are extremely helpful and she very clearly states when she has office hours. The entire TTU Chemistry department does not curve tests, not just her. She is from Britain so if you can't concentrate with an accent, don't take her class. Do the released exams she gives.
Dr. Hope-Weeks is a very clear cut professor, she gives out lots of homework but its not too hard and you have unlimited attempts to make a 100 on it. It really helped boost my grade. Tests are hard but she gives review sheets with extra credit problems. Would take again.
Her lectures were great. Very straightforward and easy to follow. Also, homework was easy and often had unlimited attempts. Tests were difficult if unprepared, but Dr. Hope-Weeks provides plenty of resources to study beforehand.
She is a tough teacher because her lecture goes really fast. However, she is fairly understanding and is always willing to explain if you have questions in class.
Shes not a good teacher in lectures. She mainly just reads off the slides and all the slides are filled with non-necessary information. During office hours she's great and a lot clearer. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. The tests are hard and she does not give any extra credit. If you go to SI and Office hours you will be alright. If you dont you will fail.
Taking this class online, with no personal contact was very difficult. I would not recommend taking this class and I personally did not find her office hours helpful.
Overall, if you can avoid taking this class then do it. The exams weight extremely heavy on your grade so one bad exam can insure that your GPA will be hurt. If you do get stuck doing this class you HAVE to attend the SI sessions to pass. The lectures are all of the place and rushed and they dont help. Do not take this class.
The hardest class I've ever taken so far. The tests are worth pretty much your entire grades and end up being way harder than the example problems and homework. She doesn't actually teach in her lectures, she just reads what directly off the slide. Doesn't work out/show work for example problems. You must teach yourself to pass.
I do not recommend this professor. She reads off PowerPoint slides and expects you to ace tests that cover much more than what she covered in lecture. She is also not personable and does not seem to care about students. It seems as though she has forgotten what it was like to be a beginner.
Horrible professor, she teaches of barebone PowerPoint slides with minimal and useless information, and testes you over material not covered in Lectures. She's always lagging behind all the chem professors despite speedrunning through her PowerPoints. Attending lectures us pointless, SI and Ochem Tutor are the only way you'll learn anything
Hopeweeks is hard. You have to really study and know the stuff to do well on the exams. She is bad and lecturing but at this point in life, most of college is self-taught so you gotta be able to do it yourself. If you're taking OChem id say take her cause it'll get you in the habit of working really hard but if not take literally anyone else.
whatever you do, DONT TAKE HER CLASS, DONT. Most of the things youll finish teaching them yourself, you dont even need to go to the lecture because whereas you go or not you will not learn. If you dont want a bad grade in this class you must go to the SI SESSIONS (tutoring). Her exams are all multiple choice but to be honest theyre hard.
Unsure if it's just her or if it's the entire chemistry department but there is an average of 12-16 homework assignments due weekly which hardly leaves time to work on other classes and yourself. I tried talking it out with her but she was very condescending and told me to do better. Ended up failing because lecs don't match other material given.
Solid professor. Took her for Chem 1307 and found that you MUST do your work in a timely manner or you will not pass. Halfway through the semester I was failing, but managed to pull a B out from going to office hours, getting all homeworks and quizzes done, and actually studying for quizzes. Don't procrastinate in this class, I've been there before
Professor is difficult to understand during lectures. Is helpful and kind during office hours, but if you don't understand a topic she gets frustrated. I learned more through getting questions wrong on the homework, watching youtube videos, and attending SI sessions.
Class was hard but not impossible and the professor is very clear about what she wants from the beginning. She constantly gave assignment due date extensions to the entire class and exams were straight out of her lecture problems. I skipped class more than half the time and was able to catch up with the textbook and homework assignments easily.
Hope-Weeks is a great professor and is dedicated to her students and their needs. Dont hesitate to go to her office hours as she is very patient and kind as she knows the material can be difficult to understand. STUDY FOR EXAMS. The exams can be very difficult if you dont go through her practice problems.
Literally never take her class, unless you want your gpa screwed up. She goes way too fast through PP slides and does not explain at all. The information on the test does not match your homework at all. The exams only get harder as you progress through the class. The SI sessions do not help either.
Hope-Weeks did not care about her students. she left so much homework that it left no time to actually study for exams or other classes. every time students would walk up to her after class to ask for help she was very condescending and she would make you feel stupid. she needs to be reevaluated as a professor.
I enjoyed this professor a lot. She gives out a lot of homework, but it’s completely possible to get an A for your homework grade. She provides extra credit for attending classes also. Go to her office hours, not many people go! Passing the exams takes discipline, but if you work hard you’ll do well.
Dr. Hope-weeks is a good person but an awful professor. She breezes over lectures and you will learn close to nothing during class. There is so much homework that it is almost impossible to find time to study for exams and work on other classes. Overall her class took up all my time and ruined my GPA.
Worst professor I have ever taken. She makes concepts harder than they actually are. She also is a tough grader and has favorites. She does not give a study guide for us to rely on for the exams. She makes you feel dumb if you ask questions. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Dr. Hope-Weeks is a hard professor, mainly due to exams. Attending her office hours were more helpful than lectures where she briefly covers PowerPoint slides at a quick pace. She does her best to make herself available outside of class which is why I did not give her a 1. I do not recommend taking this class if it is not a degree requirement.
Failed this class. Her accent in a mask made it hard to understand her (not her fault on this part) and her explanations were very vague, like we were supposed to just understand immediately.
Be prepared to spend all of your time on this class. 15 homeworks due weekly. She's very hard to understand in lectures. You will have to attend Si sessions regularly and teach yourself the majority. I learned more from Youtube in 2 minutes than in one of her lectures. No curves on exams, despite averages being significantly lower than a C.
This professor makes it almost impossible to pass this class. Attendance is mandatory because there is a quiz after EVERY lecture. She just reads off of slides during lecture super fast and NEVER actually works out difficult problems. Your exams are the whole grade and our first exam class average was a 55% if that tells you anything!
She had end of the class quizzes covered over content she just went over. There were 115 homework assignments this week for an avg of about 15 assignments per week. There is no time to actually study the content bc you're always doing homework. This class does not leave room for other classes. Exam avgs were low due to her lack of explanations.
You will have to teach yourself the entire course.
Horrible professor hands down. I had a funeral to attend and asked for the password for the end-of-class quizzes. She told me it wasn't her problem and that I HAD to be there to get the password if I wanted to take it. Bad at lecturing, has zero care or concern for your grade. Ended up having to retake this class with another, better professor.
i blame her single handedly for my academic downfall
Chem is a tough class in general. Reading the textbook helped me the most. Dr. Hope-Weeks is super kind and accessible when extra help is needed. Go to office hours!!
This class was a real grind, but with the help of Unstuck study and some hard work, I pulled through. The professor's teaching style left much to be desired, but attending office hours and using online resources made all the difference. Not the easiest class, but doable if you're willing to put in the effort.
