There were a few instances where it was noticeable it was Dr. Chim's 1st semester teaching, but only minor issues (typos, confusing examples). Overall, I though she was an excellent professor and will only get better. She always wanted to make sure everyone understood and she tries to incorporate engaging and relatable examples. Highly recommended.
Dr. Chim made this course enjoyable and easy to follow; she uses relevant examples to enhance students' understanding; I would highly recommend taking PSYC 300A or 300B with her.
The best! Dr. Chim is such a genuine person who really cares about her students understanding. Actually made stats enjoyable.
not just an Amazing prof, but the most kind hearted professor i've ever had. I wish I could've taken 300A with her too. She makes each student feel special, and she's always smiling, upbeat lectures made stats bearable for all of us
AWESOME prof! Tries her best to make a boring subject interesting, and explains things very well. Also replies to emails quickly and is available often to provide extra help. Would recommend.
BEST prof Ive ever had. Shes fair, clear, and always smiling.. She made an otherwise agonising class into a really positive learning experience. She is very understanding and willing work with her students to help them succeed. Go to class, go to the workshops, do the optional ungraded quizzes and youll do well.
One of the best profs I've had at UVic. Really good at getting her students involved through tutorials and iClicker quizzes. Very friendly and helpful so it's easy to go get help from her during office hours. Course textbook is kind of useful to have in case you need to clarify certain tough concepts (especially later on in the course).
Dr. Chim is an amazing prof, one of the best I have ever had. She is a fair marker and gives clear test outlines and practice quizzes to help you prepare. Her lectures and examples are interesting and she found a way to make stats fun! She was very helpful in office hours and very positive. If you don't take her class you are missing out!
DON'T TAKE PSYCH 100 FOR FUN!! The tests are so so hard omg. She's not a bad prof but the course coordinator Martin Smith who makes the tests is awful. Way too hard and time consuming for what this class is.
She is such a great prof! So clear and makes the best notes for studying from. Don't take stats with anybody else. Super upbeat and always helpful and approachable. She's amazing.
I don't know what the other person here that took the class is talking about, but me and all my friends found Dr. Chims class to be very interesting. The tests are a little tough but if you attended lectures and did most of your readings you'll pass easily. She uses lots of examples and iclicker questions making everything easy to remember.
I have never felt the need to rate any professor until I took a class with Dr. Chim. She is THE best professor I have had at UVIC. She made stats (super boring) somehow interesting, manageable and not nearly as daunting as it could have been. She gives her students every opportunity to succeed with all of the online resources she provides!
Dr. Chim was a decent teacher, however, she mostly just read off her slides and wasn't able to answer almost all questions asked. Seems to know her stuff but doesn't really engage students. This class can be a bit of a burden at times as there are quizzes and forums to do online each week. The iClickr marks and extra credit option is nice though.
Dr. Chim is super cute and sweet. But she's also really young,so she's trying her best to be a great prof but i mean the class is super boring. She is passionate about social psych, but if she doesn't like a subject she'll skip it or just rush through it. I'm a neuropsych major and i thought the brain piece was heavily rushed. anyways, she's okay!
Great prof. Don't take stats with anyone else.
She talks to you like your 12. And if you ask a question she'll repeat it, say its a good question, and then not know the answer. Like ever.
She's an intelligent and warm person to talk to. Has trouble answering specific questions in lectures, but she goes over the material well. Like Martin Smith, the tests are challenging. You need to memorize the textbook, lecture slides and the friday video questions to get a decent grade. DO THE RESEARCH PARTICIPATION! You'll need the extra 5%!
She goes through the notes way too fast, and she talks really fast. She usually cannot answer questions from the class, and is sometimes unprepared for class.
Tests are hard
LOVED this class. VERY clear slides great at explaining everything. Also never felt very bored in class it was usually pretty interesting. If you have an interest in psychology take this course FOR SURE!
Dr. Chim made stats bearable. The course material is extremely dry, but she tries her best to liven it up a little. The workshops are exactly like the tests, so if you study them, you will have no problem with the long answer questions. Does explain things quickly at times, but is clear. Would definitely recommend taking stats with her.
I really liked Chim, although you still have to read the textbook outside of class quite often, her lectures were very good at helping understand the material.
You have to read the chapter and do a quiz before you learn the material in lecture. Not a fan of that. Making flashcards worked for me, try doing them online or something during lectures instead of taking notes because she talks quickly. Tests are mostly memorization based so flashcards are ideal. Do research participation for bonus!
Dr. Chim is so kind. You really get the sense that she's on your side. Optional homework assignments (WITH ANSWERS) and quizzes that help you study with no stress. She will often give out cookies for different concepts (ie measuring variability by counting # of chocolate chips) so I LIKE HER A LOT. tests are fair + graded really quickly.
Such a sweet, smart prof! I really enjoyed Louise's lectures, they are definitely powerpoint based- but she goes into depth really well with their importance and relevance. Go to her office hours, she is so helpful and wants you to do well!
Louise is the reason why I decided to major in psyc. She's a great prof and makes lectures bearable. She'll tell you this first day of class but ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS read the textbook as 75% of the questions from midterms are from the textbook!!
Dr. Chim is fantastic. If stats is not your strength, I highly recommend you take it with her! She is clear and sets students up for success - provides brilliant ppt notes, optional hw and quizzes with answer keys, and welcomes students to come to office hrs. She is a gem. I had major stats anxiety going in, and left with a solid A+ in both courses
Makes lectures and topics interesting and relatable. Super approachable. A decent amount of studying required for this course but so long as you read the textbook and attend class you should be fine.
The class is pretty chill. Whether your a first year or a third year who needs an elective, this class is an easy A+. Read the textbook through and do the extra credit and you're all good.
Simple class. Make sure to read. Lectures can be repetitive. Make sure you get the research bonus points. She posts everything online.
She makes each lecture interesting and seems very inthused by her work, which is refereshing. If any student had a question she almost always had the answer, and if not she'd have a detailed one by the next class. Very nice and approachable and was never really bored in her class. Beware of iclicker, and take tutorials, it saves you from forums.
Really interesting and does a good job of going into depth on the material. The course itself is quite heavy, with weekly quizzes and forums. There are 3 midterms but no final, and participation matters due to the iClicker points. Louise did her best to prepare us well.
Take stats with Chim! I took it with both Mason and Chim, and found Chim's course to be much more clear. There were 3 midterms and a final, clicker Qs, and then online assignments and in class group work for marks. All this combined really reinforced the understanding of concepts, and helped keep your grade up as there were a lot of easy marks.
iclicker questions nearly every lecture so read the book, you'll pass with flying colours... or pay attention to lectures (she's a great speaker and her slides are nice). Read carefully the PDF w/ criteria for forums because they're easy (learn to decently summarize an article, I got all 7's from that trick). Smith "teaches" fri. No Final, 3 exams.
Lectures almost always have a participation component, usually to demo a concept or check understanding. They're often quite interesting. Show up and listen and you should pass.
She made Psyc 100 amazing. Such a good prof and great, clear lectures. Tests were very fair. I would take her class again in a heartbeat.
She makes lectures relatable as stats isn't generally a "liked" course. There is a detailed example that she goes through for each topic/test that is taught, which is super helpful. Her tests are difficult but if you pay attention and study you will do fine.
Louise was awesome, sadly she left halfway through the semester for maternity leave! She was funny and kind, she made herself accessible for extra help. Tests were a little unpredictable but still manageable if you read the book and take some notes in class. I hope I have her again!
Louise is clear and concise in all lectures. Also a nice person!
If you're looking for an ideal first year psych prof, she's super ideal. Really nice and easy to understand. Found her class relatively easy, she has fair standards and expectations of first-year university students. Go to class for the iclicker points and because videos shown in class end up on the exam but otherwise her lectures are all posted.
She is super clear and easy to follow in lectures. She can be a little boring because she goes right off the slides, but if you put your time in you'll be good.
Louis sets you up for success, if you show up to class and keep up with the reading it's not hard to do well on the exams. She makes the information clear and concise and tries to supplement it with interesting videos and activities. I really enjoyed her and would definitely take another class from her again.
Dr. Chim is a really great prof. She has really great and detailed lectures and is a great speaker. Very kind and approachable as a person and even makes sure to get to know your first name if you talk frequently. Class structure can be intensive with readings, quizzes, and forums. But once you get used to it, its really helpful for learning.
Louise is super nice and a great prof, but the course itself isn't great. It's a lot of work and her tests are pretty hard. The textbook is super important. I wouldn't take this course unless you have to. I would take other courses Louise teaches though because she's great.
really great lecturer, gives lots of opportunities to boost grades, exams are really hard
Do not take any of her classes. She does not know how to teach. When asked questions, she never has a clue how to answer. Tests and quizzes are irrelevant to what she teaches.
Terrible teacher. Lectures are absolutely pointless, and she gives no feedback on assignments so you have no idea what you did wrong. To make her class worse she doesn't even test you on the material she teaches and what she does test is maybe mentioned in half a sentence on the side of the last page in the chapter. worst teacher i've ever had.
terrible woman, doesn't care about her students at all. gives no feedback, and avoids emails for office hour appointments or questions and her grad students are even worse at it. ask a question about an assignment don't worry they'll answer you... two weeks after it's due
Louise seems like she's doing the best she can. It's the class that sucks, not her. She knows her stuff and is always open to answering questions. Textbook is required and definitely essential as 25% of the midterm questions are based off of stuff from the textbook that Louise doesn't mention in class, make sure to read it.
Psych 100A is a lot of extra stupid work. Reading the text is mandatory if you want to get at least a B and daily iclicker questions force you to go to class to get marks. There are weekly forums and quizzes on every chapter and the lectures are boring. Chim leaves slides up for less than ten seconds so don't bother trying to take notes in class.
Psych 100A+B may seem confusing and intensive at first, but you soon learn they are structured to give you the best chance possible. There are plenty of opportunities for quizzes and forums, and they take your best ones for your grade. Dr. Chim is a really great prof and teacher. Takes the time to answer all questions, and is kind and caring.
Amazing prof. Shes will always make time to answer questions. She is very understand (eg need to miss assignment for a valid reason she will help you out). She really knows her stuff and honestly shes the only reason why psyc 100A wasnt total trash.
Chim is very nice and strategic when teaching stats content. She goes over things very clearly and always is willing to answer questions or provide help outside of class. Prepare for a lot of group work. Also wish she had covered more in-class examples and spent more time on the harder content of the course.
This class was fine except for the forums, they took way to long to do and the marking was all over the place. The lectures are straight from the textbook, but it's good to go to get iclicker marks. Chim is very sweet and will try to answer your questions but she isn't the most informative. Some of the content is quite interesting though.
The class isnt hard and shes not bad at teaching, but the lectures were sometimes a bit dry. Pay attention and youll be fine!
The lectures were alright and the course material was fairly interesting. However, the textbook reading is pretty much mandatory and the online quizzes and exams were ridiculously hard. Even if you understand the course material really well it's hard to do well on the exams. I'd say only take this course if it's required by your program.
Dr Chim made this class easy and engaging by using lots visual aids, real life examples, and class demos. Her half-individual-half-group exams were new and took a bit of getting used to, but group workshops were fun. She tries to get to know her students personally which makes her very approachable and a pleasure to talk to. I highly recommend her.
Chim is AMAZING. Stats is a real weak point for me but Chim breaks things down so well, and lets you know exactly what to expect on exams. If you do the work, it's completely possible to do well. She uses funny real-world examples in lecture which keeps things interesting, and is super sweet and kind in office hours. Really wants you to succeed!
While I did well in this class, it took A LOT of effort to get the mark I did. There are so many little assignments that seem like they won't take long but do(quizzes, forums), but there are some chances to boost your grade with surveys, research study participation for extra credit, etc. Chim is overall a really nice prof, but the class just sucks
Louise was a great professor, she is super kind and helpful outside of class. Gives lots of opportunities to boost your grade, but it's a lot of work to do this. Lots of reading and lectures are basically just the textbook reading reiterated, some of the time I didn't find it useful to go to class if I already read the readings.
A really great teacher! I was so confused reading some of these negative reviews for psyc100A with Dr. Chim because I enjoyed the course. Theres no need to stress about her not covering everything in class, because everything else you need to know is clearly stated in the textbook. The forums are easy if you ask your TA for help.
Louise Chim is the BEST prof ever. She is so nice, with a great caring attitude for each and every one of her students, and gives helpful tips and advice/feedback for questions and concerns. I found all of my problems in class to be solved, once I asked her for help. My grade went from an F to a D-. And that's pretty good for me.
Loved this class. Information and material was very interesting, straightforward, and down to the point. Lectures are easy to follow, just don't skip or miss any classes. Because once you miss class, it's hard AND it gets harder to catch up. Make sure you don't miss class, then you'll do fine.
Worst teacher I've had in a long time. Lectures are pointless as the only thing she does is read, word for word, from the textbook (which you should've already read). Goodluck if you want to ask a question as she can't even answer the simplest ones. I question if she actually has a doctorate in Psychology. Her "expertise" doesn't match the quality
Good teacher, very picky about respect in the class room... Always be on time, no food or drinks, and no talking. She is helpful and accommodating though. Tests in psych are very easy and just require doing the notes for the chapter. Easy success.
Louise is super nice and does what she can to help you, she was very helpful when I asked questions about future psych careers and she helped me plan. Class wasn't hard as long as you read the textbook. She tries to make the class engaging, all of the material is in the textbook or posted so if you miss a class it isn't a problem.
Dr. Chim was a great instructor to have in my first year, she is not intimidating and tries to create a comfortable environment for her students. Her lectures are pretty interesting and her i-clicker questions are similar to exam questions. She doesn't cover all the material that you will need to know, so you definitely have to take notes.
Dr. Chim is such an amazing prof! I had a different prof for 100a and didn't do nearly as well. Her lectures are very engaging and the Friday classes are more video focussed. Would definitely recommend Chim above anyone else for psych 100a and 100b. Extra credit opportunities and the quizzes and forums are the best 8 and best 4 so easy to do well!
The class was very very boring, there are a lot of iCliker questions in the slides and your grade is marked based on 3 exams, 8 quizzes and 6 forums.
Loved Louise! Had her for psyc 300A and 300B and was terrified for them but she made it super easy. You can do super well on the tests if you commit to doing the optional homework and study material. She's also very helpful in office. I miss her already!
Louise is an amazing prof. SO amazingly caring and understanding. There were honestly ppl in our lecture who were rude or would start debating each other but she would always handle it so amazingly and with such grace. If you have questions for her best to do to office hours where shes a lot more in depth then in class. She's always willing to help
I had Chim for Psyc 100a and b and I loved her. She always made everything very clear when she was discussing difficult concepts. A real nice prof who cares that her students do well in this class
Dr. Louise Chim is an exceptional professor and I feel honoured to attend her lectures. It is online right now, meaning I only see her live lectures every two weeks. However, I am always super excited to attend and listen to what she has to say!
Louise is one of the nicest profs I've ever had honestly such a gem and very understanding. I had some personal issues arise which made it hard for me to submit a certain assignment on time along with taking the midterm at the time and she helped me work around it! Her office hours are super helpful if you're ever confused.
Professor Chim is one of the best profs I've ever had! She's super helpful and you can tell she genuinely cares about all of her students. The class is pretty time consuming for an elective, but if you're willing to put in the time and effort you'll be fine as it's a super interesting course. Highly recommend the class and prof!
One of the best profs. Very sensitive and caring. 3 midterms (no exams) and they are all multiple choices. Papers are marked on your best 3/6, and the same goes with quizzes (best 8/11). Lot's of opportunities to get a good grade. I got 100 overall because of the extra 5% bonus credit for research. 10/10 reccomend.
Good! Very knowledgable about the cultural psychology subject, uses lots of real-world examples, lets you look at your midterms afterwards. However, she is pretty biased towards the collectivist cultures and you definitely had to fully agree with her to get good marks. Keep that in mind and you'll do great.
I loved Dr. Chim's cultural psych class! It was a very condensed time-frame, but she really dove into the topics and made them interesting and engaging to learn. Marking/expectations can be tough at times, due to the content-heavy tests/projects, but if you use key terms from lectures you're guaranteed to do well. Wish I had more classes with her.
Louise Chim is one of the best professors I have had here at UVic. Psyc 300A is a difficult class, and as someone who isn't a “math person”, Dr. Chim made this course far less frightening for me. Her lectures are extremely thorough, and she offers a lot of help outside class time. She is the kind of prof that genuinely wants to help you learn.
Dr. Chim is so kind. There are lots of opportunities to boost your grades throughout the class. Lots of Information covered in the class, so reading the textbook is helpful.
Dr. Chim was a great prof. The notes were very clear and concise, with expectations on exams and grades clearly stated. If you go to class and actually pay attention you can do just fine in her class. She also gives tons of extra practice work to use too. I loved her, she was super nice and so helpful if you were ever stuck.
Was terrified to take this course and she was so helpful. Truly wanted her students to succeed. Would recommend her any day!! Gave practice quizzes and homework for every single unit even though it wasn't required. This is hard material so I'd recommend missing classes cause it's easy to fall behind. Amazing professor however!
loved this class and Dr. Chim
Awesome prof. Fair testing and grading, she wants you to succeed!
Such a lovely woman and an engaging, caring professor. Very fair class breakdown and assessments, and provided detailed exam guides before each exam. Lots of places to make up marks. She's very approachable and explains concepts well one on one so go to her office hours if something's confusing. Missing her so much in 300b rn I can't lie.......
Such an incredible educator. Incredibly organized and clear class structure, many opportunities to engage in learning, if you work on quizzes, homework and test prep can definitely succeed ! Dr. Chim is clearly invested in teaching and learning and it is so appreciated. Take any class she teaches she is the best teacher in Science at UVIC.
Dr. Chim is the kindest prof I know. She is informative and receptive in the classroom and always makes time to support students. Her lectures are clear, supported by good slides. You should have the textbook for her class but the main topics you need to know are covered in class, the textbook simply goes more in depth. She is an awesome prof!
Her lectures were pretty good and I found her to be pretty nice. Would take another course of hers in the future
I wanted to bang out a psyc class for my psyc degree in 3.5 weeks, and based on Dr. Chim's great reviews on here I'm so glad I did PSYC 386 with her! She's highly knowledgeable, a very clear lecturer, available outside of class, and wants you to succeed. I found her MC questions tough, but if you engage with the material and study you'll be fine.
Great prof, would recommend
