favorite college Eng teacher so far. she explains what she wants very clearly over multiple classes before a due date and gives many handouts with step by step instructions so it's very straight forward. always good at answering emails and flexible with office hours. always good discussions in class where everyone participates. passionate teacher.
It was a required course and I initially dreaded it. As it turn out, it is one of the most helpful courses I have taken. I have learned a great deal and am now more confident in my writing. Louise is clear, fair, and gives many helpful comments on written submissions but isn't a pushover in grading. She really cares. Hard work pays off!
This course really makes you think from different perspectives not like those boring high school English courses. You need to have evidence and not just blurt out random opinions. Louise is very organized and clear in course expectations. Pay attention and you'll do fine. Grades are really fair. Papers are returned fast with many good comments.
I have to say I'm not much of a reader, but she made the class interesting and interactive. She is such a great teacher overall, she's funny and not intimidating at all. Louise provides good advice on the essaysassignments and she is always helpful. I would definitely take her class again!
A English teacher that actually made me learn something. Crystal clear about what she wants from the essays and gives a lot of examples so that students can do well. Has many handouts and requires books not textbooks. However she can be a bit strict and inflexible from my point of view. Very teacher like. So far the best English teacher I've took.
Policies are applied fairly. If you miss an assignment, you need to provide documentation or take the penalty. I had to work for everything but learnt alot of stuff that will help me in other courses. Take this course from this prof and you are not wasting your time and $.
Finally I learned to write good papers. Good class!
Louise is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She marks pretty tough - she really makes you earn your mark. With that said, my writing has improved a lot over the semester, and that is thanks to her. She's really approachable and is always available to help you. I loved her lectures - she is so funny!
Louise is an awesome teacher. She can be a tough marker but she gives many opportunities to get her help, making it easy to get a good mark. She chooses interesting material and really doesn't give you that much work to do in total. My only gripe: she makes you work with groups a lot, which would have sucked if I had a bad group. Overall: Awesome!
If you are taking this course for an easy A, this is not the prof to take it with. Louise is a hard marker but she gives you opportunities for help. Her office hours are always full due to the fact her marks given are so low. She is a sweet teacher, but a hard marker for a first year english. Also lots of group work/projects and a quiz every week.
Good course and great prof. I learned alot that helps me in other classes too. She is funny, tough, and really cares. I didn't think I would ever say this about an English course but I enjoyed it.
Louise is by far one of the most involved English teachers I have learnt from. She returns assignments quickly and gives LOTS of feedback. Her essay expectations are crystal clear and formulaic. Lots of reading but never boring. Class lectures/discussions are always fun and very informative. She requires three novels - super cheap! Pick her!
She's an awesome teacher. You'll love going to her classes. She is super clear on her assignments, will spend hours of her own time just on handouts to make sure her students are successful. She is a fairly tough marker, but is very fair. You'll have to earn your A, but she will set you up for success. Would definitely recommend!
my god such a hard marker she almost failed me last semseter and i have a 3.5 gpa
She was nice, helpful and a hard marker but prepared us well for assignments
Louise is incredibly involved. I had to retake Eng1130 and I am so glad I chose to take it with her. Went from a C- to an A-. You will have to work hard and GO SEE HER DURING OFFICE HOURS. She will give you personalized advice to improve your writing.
Honestly, Dr. Saldanha is a really good teacher but a tough marker - and I'm not just saying that. I generally average a B+/A in English but I somehow got a B- in her class. If English isn't your best subject, and you need a good mark, look elsewhere. But if you're here genuinely to just learn English, she's definitely for you.
Louise is a nice teacher. She is hilarious and cares about her students. She helps a lot in preparing the students for papers and quizzes. However, she is a tough grader and expects a lot from her students.
Louise is wonderful and kind. She encourages us to work hard and gives great feedback to help us improve. She also gives us marking sheets before assignments are due to let us know what is expected. I paid attention to her handouts and feedback and had no problem.
Great professor, gives good feedback and is clear on requirements. Go to office hours for extra help!
She's nice but seriously tough marker. Dont be late for class or else she gives you "the look". Do not take her class unless you are already good at writing.
I took a writing class from another professor and did very badly and didn't learn anything but this time I did really well! Louise taught us how to write clearly and effectively. She is awesome, strict, fair, and funny. Take this class but make sure you work hard and pay attention.
Defs would recommend to everyone. Exciting content, fun class + made friends.
Louise is a great professor. Academic writing is meant to be a challenging class but I feel like I learned a lot while taking this class. I also feel like the skills we learned will be useful in my academic career.
Very clear and explain what we need to do clearly and always available to help. Hearty.
May come off as a tough marker, but work hard and visit her office hours! Hilarious and caring, take her class for ENGL 1130
She's a really nice person, but will dock you 5% every time you miss a class. There is a reading quiz every week and she wastes a lot of time in class with group discussions
Favorite class so far at Douglas!
Louise connects with students and is passionate and gives lots feedback that is positive to help students write better. Classes go fast.
She is womderful teacher. Louise is clear and helpful and she tries to make her classes positive.
Don't skip a class, work hard and consult her for improvements and you can get a good grade.
Don't skip a class, work according to the schedule and consult her for improvements.
extremely disrespectful. Very rude when you ask her questions. If you can have an alternative of another teacher please do. Worst experience at Douglas College so far.
Took her class last year. Really paying of this year b/c I'm getting better marks on my essays now!
Although she is a tough marker, she is really fair and will give you a good mark if you do everything she tells you to do. She taught me a lot about Academic Writing, and I'm happy that I took her class.
She really breaks down how to write an essay. I learned a lot. If you are not sure about a thing she will take time to sit with you and explain. That has been very good for me.
Although she can be a tough marker, Louise is a great prof. You'll do well in her class as long as you do all the readings and are willing to work hard. She also has office hours which was very helpful.
She is by far the worst professor I've had, extremely rude and favours students. Really tough marker even though I am a good writer. She has officially made me hate english her teaching skills are very poor. Please take my advice and dont take a class with her.
Fun for an English course. It was really hands-on with lots of discussion - not a lot of boring lectures. The reasons for your grades are made really clear and she even will meet with you to help!
She got us to figure out our own thoughts about the novels and stories we read. That was great! Plus the stories were interesting.
It was taught together with another prof and they did joint lectures and separate discussion sections. Prof. Saldanha is funny and she makes you work hard and she works with you to get you to write better. The readings were mostly interesting and the discussion section gave time to practice!
AMAZEING!
dont take her
a passionate teacher who clearly loves her job. Loved the stories we read!!!!!
Wish I had taken it in first year. The course defiantly improved all my wiritng and I am grateful for how as what to improve in our work and how to improve it.
Tough course. Great proff! meetings with her very helpful
super fun courses. she is hilarious but makes you work hard.
Did a similar course at UBC. This was much better. Very understandable. Great feedback.
a really good class with lots of discussion and some controversial stories that made me think. didnt know an English class could be so interesting.
structured, disciplined and fun. u will learn lots!
I don't think she realizes that some students can have anxiety from speaking in class. However, she loves to do mandatory group discussions and it gives me a hard time because I like to work on my own. She likes group presentations too. So if you're like me, don't take this class.
Great Prof!
Louise cares about the quality of your work and takes the time to correct you and help you improve. However, she is anal about punctuality and gives a lot of homework. Yes, it keeps you on track, but she needs to realize that we have a lot of homework from other classes as well - assign a reasonable amount of hw!
Is tough course. If you work hard and listen to helpfull advice you will learn to write a good essay.
Louise was THE HARDEST GRADER EVER but her lectures were very good. Hella passionate about what she does and the stories we talk about. Getting good grades on papers was sooooooo hard but it was a very interactive class and she loved having discussions. Also we read a lot of very cool stories.
A good course where you will learn to write a decent paper. She gives great feedback.
I'm currently in her class and guys, SHE'S AWESOME. She's easily accessible outside of class and gives great feedback. She's a tough grader, but it's only because she knows you could do better. She's also fair when marking, and tells you where you went wrong and how to improve. Defs a class for a beginner in the English department.
She's nice and pretty goofy. She gives a lot of advice. She advised me to use online tutoring for my paper, which helped the first time. Unfortunately I didn't do it again which is probably why I got the mark I did.
Louise is a very involved teacher who is very clear with criteria, expectations, and explains things very well. However, she is a hard marker. She is very helpful if you make the time to see or email her.
Louise may seem shes all small, soft and nice however, her grading is very bias. If you dont happen to show up to her class one day, youre in her bad book. She discouraging and not encouraging when it comes to writing.
Take advantage of the extra office hours she holds for extra help on papers. There is no textbook but the coursepack is free and helped me even in other courses. I had some tough personal stuff going on and she was really understanding.
Great teacher, really enjoyed her class.
Course really helps in my other classes where I need to write essays - you will learn a lot about how to write well.
I'd say Louise is a fairly hard marker, but definitely fair. She gives great feedback and advice BUT make sure you shoot her an email or see her during her office hours. Attendance and participation are also important
I had to drop the class because of the amount of work. All of the lectures are super boring and there is not much substance to the class. I have taken classes with her before, all of the themes are boring and outlandish. I have submitted essays before an usually receive around a B/B+ and for all of her essays I got a C-. Shes nice but grades harsh
she was a nice prof, but you definitely have to put in the work. If you follow all the guidelines of how to write a paragraph/essay, it really isin't too hard
Required a 1st year English course and am glad I took hers! Lots of discussion and she makes you think. Even with the on-line transition because of COVID, she kept things lively and fun.
Good prof that is caring and always available to help. I learned how to write a pretty good essay thanks to her patience!
Louise is a great teacher. She is essay to contact out of class hours. Her materiel is a bit sensitive, take her content warning in her syllabus seriously. There was two papers and the final exam. All in all if I take more English classes I will look for hers.
If you want to learn how tor write a good essay, this is the class you need. She gives great instructions and has clear expectations. Hang on to her handout packages because they will help in other courses. She is also funny!
Louise is a great professor who is nice and caring and will help you with whatever you need just as long as you ask. All of the work done in her class is based on the handout packages she gives so just make sure to follow that and ask her questions and you will do great.
Louise was an amazing prof! This class really opened my eyes to different cultures and we discussed many social issues as well. Some of the readings were graphic but very engaging (she gave trigger warnings). She is willing to accommodate certain deadlines if you show engagement in the course. Take her course if you need an English elective!
Good readings and plenty of discussion. Handouts vlearly show how to meet expectations. A fun course.
Took both her courses last semester. She is clear about expectations and totally helpful especially about how to write good papers. She even takes the time to meet with each student twice in "writing conferences" where she tells you what you are doing well and offers suggestions on how to improve! I wish the profs at U of T were as helpful.
Great prof. Super knowledgeable and has interesting topics to discuss. Some of them are a bit outdated, but are interesting. Her handout package is gold. There is lots of writing and reading which means 2+ hrs of homework everyday. Definitely not a beginners english class. I wish I would have taken a different one to start and hers second.
This class can sink your GPA if your not careful or prepared for the amount of work it takes to complete it. Prof is ok. Just the layout and assignments are set up weird. It comes off overwhelming and she can sometimes make things feel stressful when they don't have to be. Hard to approach, academic minded and has a hard time explaining concepts.
A little under half my class has dropped out. Class is 2x a wk. One class is spent on group discussions - she will call you out for not participating in these. Roughly more than half the class do not show up to the discussion class. The second class is "how to write a.." its all how to write. Which is helpful but boring. 1.8/5 rating.
I had to drop the class. I was excited to retake English, as it's my favorite subject. But this class changed that. The topics are weak and go over the same themes that are constantly getting regurgitated over and over again. Can't we talk about things that are relevant to our current circumstances? I wasn't a fan of how she ran the class either.
For an English course, this is a good one to take. Louise answers emails with good advice. The class is interesting because you see things from different perspective.
Louise cares about your participation and thoughts on the (great) literature she assigns, so you sure have to read (short stories and novels). There were quite a lot of short assignments + 3 essays. Nonetheless, it was such an interesting English course and Louise makes everything to keep it so. Be ready to buy physical copies of novels.
Louise is an excellent teacher; if you are an international student taking English classes, this is the class for you. But be prepared to work, read, and attend her class on time. She is available after class and ready to assist you in any area of the course where you are having difficulty.
I found this prof very condescending. Which made it hard for me to ask questions. She said attendance was mandatory, and that we would be docked 1% for every class missed. But I missed several classes and was never docked. There were a lot of little things like that that made the course annoying and more of a headache than it needed to be.
1130 english not as scarey as I thought the course would be thanks to Louise!
Louise was very caring. I personally dislike english courses they give me a lot of anxiety but louise always had good feedback in terms of guiding your to the direction of doing better. Lots of reading though be prepared to understand the material before you go to class.
Great teacher, engaging and you can tell she has a passion for English and teaching. She is approachable and accessible. Assignments are clear and she is very gracious with extended deadlines and such. Lots of information when you start the course, so please read it. Goodluck everyone!
She cares about her students, and I'm grateful for that. Grading, on the other hand, was not clear. Finding the assignments, is also very challenging because the Blackboard page of her course is total mess. If I had a chance, I would choose another instructor. I suggest you do the same.
Louise is a lovely professor to have for ENGL1102. She really cares about her students' success & you can tell how passionate she is about the topics she teaches. Attendance is mandatory as there are often class discussions on the assignments we are working on. Get ready to read! This class is tough, but you will succeed if you put in the effort!
Make sure you get atop of all your work as her course content is fairly heavy in the beginning. However, the workload decreases a lot which gives you a lot of time to focus on other work and stuff. That does not mean you should fall behind. Good luck!
Louise is a really great prof. She really cares about her students success. The course is a bit heavy at the beginning with reading but it gets better near the end. The essays are a bit difficult but she is really good at answering questions and gives really good feedback on your work. Overall I would definitely recommend this class!
Louise was great! She truly has a passion for english. Personally dont love English, but Louise was a good prof. 3 essays total and paragraphs spread along the way. Not too much reading- mainly articles for the paragraphs
Louise is a kind and caring professor. The course involves a lot of writing, but it's an academic writing course, so that should be expected. She gives a lot of leeway with paper deadlines. She makes herself available outside class hours and you can tell she wants her students to succeed. I recommend taking her academic writing course for sure.
She's sweet and easy going. I recommend her.
She's the worst teacher ever. I don't get the hype why everyone says she's a good teacher.
Her feedback wasn't clear and her notes were everywhere - to the point where you don't know what she even means. I don't understand the hype on this professor as she was quite condescending.
Pretty down to earth and supportive. Flexible when you need it.
if i have to rate her from 1-10, i would give it a 0.
Be prepared for rigorous grading, as she is a tough marker and expects detailed and well thought out. Attendance is mandatory for this class. I would not recommend taking her class if this is your first English course, as the expectations and workload may be challenging for beginners.
I'm not a good writer but she does one on one meetings to help you get better. They helped alot
Dr. Saldanha was a great professor because of how helpful her lectures are for writing. I would not recommend for a first semester as it can be overwhelming especially later in the semester with the research paper. I don't consider myself a good writer but I still learned a lot even though I probably didn't do well in her course.
Louise is sweet, she analyzed the readings in depth with the class and made It easy to understand. She gives good feedback on essay proposals that will actually benefit you, and is a fair marker. I would recommend her.
great teacher. i took her for academic writing and she was very clear what she wanted and when you do that you do well.
she's caring and she will check with you after an essay.
Friendly and outwardly encourages students to reach out. However, when you do she often gives judgmental answers. She also won't answer questions during class breaks and only to emails within a set timeframe. If you miss a class, consider it lost because she won't give you any of the missed information, claiming it's your responsibility to find it.
Professor Saldanha is down-to-earth and supportive. The class has a good amount of reading, but her feedback is helpful. Unstuck AI proved useful for study prep.
Kind but lectures are annoying. No technology allowed during class. Group discussions each class, and you have to pick up the slack for those who did not do the weekly reading. Quizzes every Sunday which is weird. Topics provided for essays are kind of ridiculous. Submissions are not through Blackboard which was inconvenient for me.
A good 1st year course. Readings are interesting and she is usually funny in her lectures. The extension policy helps.
I would like to express my gratitude for such passionate professors. She gives numerous feedbacks and help.
Great teacher very understanding and very helpful with feedback def take her!!!
I LOVE LOUISE!! Shes so sweet, and gave us these really helpful packages on how to actually write. She gives such great feedback and shes an easy marker. I would take her again a million times over, i now know how to actually write and structure my essays instead of just doing whatever felt right. Shes so helpful and accessable outside of class!!
I personally do not like her at all. She says rude comments and she isn't understanding towards students who have a harder time in class.
She is probably one of the most difficult English professors I have ever had. I was met with numerous backhanded comments and sarcastic remarks when I'd ask for help with the course work. She does not support students who struggle. I don't recommend
i enjoy the class very much, and i appreciate all of the help. Even if i am not completing the assignments all the time the class is fun.
Had Louise in my first semester, first year at Douglas, she's the best! Her lectures are funny and informative, and she's very clear about how she grades. She gives lots of time to write and reflect. You'll actually enjoy academic writing. I was a B-average student in high school. Sit next to someone good, you'll talk a lot. Take her, hands down!
Decent professor. Explains concepts well however you are expected to participate in class discussions. Quizzes mostly involve some identification and essay writing. She is open to consultations if needed and questions you may need to ask.
One of, if not, the best instructor/professor I ever had. I learned so much in her class to the point that I really wanted to ask her for the notes that I lost the following semester just to help me out for future references.
she was such a kind and amazing prof. when i had questions i emailed her and she responded within 1-2 days. the course content wasn't difficult and she taught it in a way that was easy to understand. overall would take her again she was amazing
lots of assignments.. not an easy grader, very slow on marking- will not suggest to take her again
Louise is supportive and helpful and gives great feedback. This course takes the mystery out of academic writing.
Very understanding and makes expectations clear. There's never a time where you'll feel confused and offers all the support you will need.
Good professor, content isn't hard to understand as long as you have read the materials as they are important for weekly quizzes and essay writing. She is very passionate in her teaching and willing to help students if you email her.
