Speigler is a text book writer, therefor veeery difficult. She taught us like we were her textbook-writing friends that were just going over info for fun. Things we didn't even cover in class appeared on the exams, and the class-required text books were extremely dry, long, and boring. Very harshly graded as well. I wouldn't recommend her
Overall, this a very interesting and well taught class. Lectures were very open and thought provoking, and she was respectful towards the students regardless of whether or not she agreed with them. The textbook was rather dry, but the rest of the readings she assigned tended to be much less boring. All of her assignments had clear instructions.
She is an ok teacher.
Fun things were covered but Spiegler managed to make history that much more boring. Just teaches from the text book and can't teach on her own!
Very enthusiastic about subject, lots of readings and writing assignments. hard tests but fair grading. keep up on reading and class is ok. very nice person.
She opens the class with a speech on diversity and the "acceptance of opinions" and yet in the same speech she completely shoots down various viewpoints. Her grading is hard and she put stuff on the tests that we didn't go over. Would not recommend.
Emailed her about assignments and she never replied at all. doesnt really believe in technology
SOOOO much homework. Has you read chapters out the textbook for homework everyday which are usualy 35 pages long.then usually assigns more reading that are usually 20 pages long. Also has homework for these readings. Has info on tests that she never talked about. I will NEVER take her again!!
She is an english teacher as well as a history teacher. If you are taking a history class she will grade you as an english teacher AND a history teacher. She does not seem to have a lesson plan. She provides a powerpoint an just sort of talks about them breifly, she goes off on tangents, jokes, asks the class a lot of questions...shes not so great
Her class requires a lot of work. There is an enormous amount of reading and have assingments attached to them. She is a fair grader. She looks for you to spit out what was covered in class and your own ideas (grades on grammer too) To keep up with the class you need to be organized and read all materials (give yourself plenty of time to read).
Louise is all over the place. I LOVE history. Though she is passionate about what she is teaching, she does it in an irratic and barely comprehensible manner. Too much information is given every clas period and its hard to absorb it all. I am usually very invested in my history classes but this one was a bust.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Didnt explain that there was assignments with readings. Never organized. Expected you to get every reading and assignment online, but didnt want you using computers during class. Brought her kids to class with her. Her assignments seems like they were brought from 5th grade history. Worst professor... I HAVE EVER HAD!
She is kind of all over the place but she's nice at least. She tries.
she is a very nice person and is interested in what she teaches however her class layout is poor and gets sidetracked easily. her class was easy and i would take her class again
I had trouble with her teaching because she was all over the place and had to constantly refer to her slideshow to rearrange DURING a lecture. Even when on the current slide, she was all over the place. She seemed to give off a "you don't deserve my respect" attitude which made it hard to listen to her.
She is a horrible teacher. I always liked English before I took her class. She is a history teacher, so even her english class is all about history. She is never organized, is all over the place, and she never makes assignments clear. She messed up the whole class on 3 assignments already, each after another. She doesn't like her students.
Cool at first, but quickly went downhill. She is nice and you can tell she enjoys writing but she is the most unorganized teacher and never knows what she assigned or what we are supposed to be doing. Its annoying going to class and being asked to turn in homework you were never assigned.
Only take this course if you want a history course, composition course, and creative writing course all at once. Lecturing students about cell phone usage while at the same time using your own cell phone for personal calls is not a good way to teach a class, neither is taking your kids to class with you.
WARNING: DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS! Too much homework, very unclear instruction, harsh grader, goes off on personal rants of her own interests yet doesn't let students speak freely (she will cut you off if she doesn't like what you have to say). Only take this class if you want the absolute worst college experience.
She's a great teacher but a very harsh grader. I'm a 3.8 student but I was pulling a D in her class. I put a lot of effort into everything we were assigned but I kept getting handed back average to bad scores. I became so frustrated that I eventually dropped the class.
She is a great teacher. It is a lot of reading and short essays. But if you do the work it is not hard to get a good grade. As well, there was PLENTY of extra credit assignments making a good grade very obtainable. I learned a lot and she was very knowledgeable. If she used to be unorganized (from other reviews), this definitely changed.
Mrs. Speigler took over this class when the previous teacher left, so we only had her for half of the quarter. She had many primary sources which we read and had writing assignments on as well as readings from a textbook. Her teaching style is fun and engaging, and she presents her material well. It wasn't very easy, but I really liked her class.
Very scattered, doesn't agree with personal writing styles. if you dont write in her style she will grade you harshly. hypocritical towards right answers, use easy words and write like a 5th grader for papers and you will do fine otherwise she will disagree with words.
She is nice teacher. She doesnt grade your grammar on history papers, just shows you the proper way. I had a hard time with the readings because they are boring. She gives you a paper with all the assignments at the start of the class. I BSed my papers all the way, and still got good grades on them. Just add quotes! :)
She is a very nice teacher. She wants every student to do well and answers every question with an answer that makes sense. Although, she does teach very quickly- at least 20 slides a day and a quiz every week. The readings were quite heavy so it was difficult to answer questions. But, I enjoyed her class
I took ENG101 with her. She was an extremely hard grader. The class was very dull and dragged on quite a bit. She is extremely friend though and will assist you.
Had lots of fun in this class, there was lots of learning and lots of fun activities
I previously took HIST126 with this professor and it was great. Hard work, whether in a lecture heavy class (take notes!) or seminar, with a decent amount of reading assigned, but I learned a lot from both classes. She is a somewhat harsh grader, but she also gives ample opportunities for extra-credit. I definitely recommend this teacher.
oh MY GOD ! Worst teacher ever. Very hard, terrible lecturer, annoying, and chose favorites. DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM HER
I had Spiegler a few quarters ago for World Civ 1, and she was an awesome teacher! Really passionate about her info, fun to work with, and I enjoyed attending class. You definitely need to do your readings and the assignments to make a good impression, because if you miss a reading you're lost. Taking her again for World Civ 2 :)
Don't take this class! Hard grader and very biased. If we write anything she doesn't like, she will give you a low grade. Will not give you the grade you deserve. Gives attitude and can be rude.
Louise was an awesome professor. If you read everything that is assigned and absorb the material, you will ace all of the quizzes. The lowest ones are even dropped! If you know how to write, you will ace the essays. Overall, she was a wonderful history professor and I hope to take another one of her classes. History has never interested me before!
Spiegler goes over most concepts from required readings. She gave us timelines to understand better which helps a lot. Everything she discusses is very clear and she will always stop to review something more in-depth. Also, she is easy to reason with if a problem comes up and you can't turn something in on time.
Louise is a super nice teacher! She is obviously very interested in history, and she was very knowledgeable! If you do the work along the guidelines you'll do well. My only complaints is that she did side-track a lot, and we barely used the textbooks. Quizzes were easy, no tests or midterms!! Loved her :)
She is amazing! She is very passionate about the subject matter and an all around great teacher!
I don't know what kind of experience everyone else had but she is a great teacher and approaches history with great enthusiasm.
No tests. No finals. Only short and fairly easy quizzes based on the information taught in class. Spiegler's goal was definitely to teach students information, not to stress them out or over work them. Readings are assigned but are rarely mandatory. There is a large group project, but it's easy enough to pull through. Very interesting class.
I loved her! High recommended
Very passionate about history. Gets off topic often. Long and sometimes dull lectures. Overall pretty chill teacher, just make sure you do the work. Also class is very textbook-based. If you don't read the textbook you will not do well in the class. Be prepared to be doing A LOT of reading including primary sources (old english language)
I have never found history so interesting before I took her class. When I took her class, she didn't have midterms or finals; instead we had 5 tests spaced throughout the quarter. These tests weren't super hard, but they were long and often had trick answers. Make sure that you're well studied! She also firmly believed in group work!
Lots of readings, Weekly Quizzes on multiple chapters, Few assignments, Tough Grader. You either do really good or really bad in her class. No tests, one big group project and one final quiz.
The professor assigns a BOAT LOAD of readings that it becomes unbearable. She also will lecture the full 2 hours and even go over class time (She diverges A LOT and you don't know what she's going to put on the quizzes). On the bright side there isn't a final, only short quizzes every week with extra credit.
Her lectures won't actually bore you to death like most teachers but she's not that good at teaching for a good grade. She goes way off topic and I love her enthusiasm on the subjects but it really doesn't help when you're studying for a quiz (theres one every week) and you have no idea whats on it. Good as a person, not that good of a teacher.
She's a good professor who is very passionate about what she is lecturing about which makes it more interesting as a student. However, there is quite a bit of reading that are very dry and boring to read.
She was a really great teacher in my opinion, if you ask her for help she is willing to sit down with you, and talk about what you are struggling with. In this class we had 7 quizzes, all multiple choice, near the end of the quarter you have to preform a 25minute skit. I reccommend her, but make sure all assignments are turned in on time.
Lousie not only loves history, she loves to teach history. She is a joy to take a class from.
If you put in the work, the grades will show with her. Started off with a very low grade and finished with a solid B, all because she saw how much effort I put in. I hate history and her lectures were never anything but fun! Sadly, the reading is dull, but her skills as a professor make up for that.
Tough class. I was stressed out towards the end of the quarter to get my grade where I wanted it and didn't quite get it there. I learned a lot. I really enjoyed being in her class and getting to know her (she has a lot of stories if you ask her to share).
A really awesome lady who is so passionate about what she does! She teaches at UWB so she is a tougher grader and has higher expectations than most teachers I have had. She is kind and very tough at the same time. In her class be sure to follow all guidelines as well as do ALL of the readings and take good notes! Tests are rather difficult!
She is very passionate a fun to have as a teacher. In my class there was about 70 pages of reading assigned each week, as well as writing assignments. It was a lot of work but she is a very kind, caring knowledgable teacher.
All and all shes a nice lady but does not know how to be reasonable or a good teacher. Shes an YA book writer that loves history but when talking about it in class I rather be water boarded. She hate confrontation and no grades are up for discussion even if you think she's made a mistake. This is completely unfair to the students.
Professor Spiegler is a passionate, caring history teacher. I took her History 148 class, and did pretty well as long as I stayed on top of the reading. The workload is very low, minus reading out of the textbook, as there are few papers and assignments. Not much group work, and only a few mini quizzes with extra credit (no midterm or final).
Tests usually have extra credit on them!
Honestly an amazing teacher! She's super nice and understanding, and she gives amazing lectures and gives lots of opportunities for extra credit. However, the class has a lot of reading, a paper due every week, and is quiz heavy. If you can study hard and want to put in the effort, its an awesome class!
Note-taking is important for work in her classes. The course was pretty straight-foward. She can accommodate reasonably.
Professor Spiegler does great lectures with easy to follow presentations. We hardly used the text book but it's still worth getting. Her class was actually a pretty fun way to learn history. At the end of the quarter we had to do a group project and put on a play. I'm not a fan of it but that's just because I'm not good at that kind of stuff.
I enjoyed the class. The final project was very entertaining. Professor Spiegler is enthusiastic about the subject and her lectures were easy to keep with, but there wasn't much feedback on our work to know what we did wrong. She had interactive ways of engaging with the material which really helps with retention. There is some extra credit.
A nice lady, but a good teacher? NO. Insane amount of reading, quizzes are pretty hard. Questions on the readings are long & specific. She HEAVILY grades your grammar in your answer as if it were English. Assignments are scattered on canvas, very unorganized. All assignments for the quarter are in one area. But in at least 20 different folders.
The first day of class she was talking about what would happen if we weren't at school for a quiz. She said, "Since I'm not obligated to help you with that, I won't". Though she's very kind, what she said pretty much sums her up. Even if it you're bad grade is her fault and she ADMITS it... she still won't change your grade. BUT she is a nice lady.
She's a great person, but not such a good professor! Her lectures are super unclear, they won't help you on a quizzes. You have to pretty much self learn in that class, tons of reading which is fine. She's super rude in emails. My grade went down 7% just because I missed few days...
I don't know where to start, she is one of the worst professors I have ever had! It's an easy class, but her quizzes are hard af, useless lectures, grades grammar like it's English class and knocks a lot of points for it. Forgot to do one hw? Get ready to fail her class. Does not communicate and does not negotiate. Don't take her class.
Just awful! Im so disappointed in this professor and how unprofessional she is. The whole quarter was a disaster, unorganized, she cant keep herself on topic, jumping from on thing to another. Grades hard, and unfair! Tons of reading! Wont recommend her class even to the enemy..
With the snow came about 2 or 3 weeks of cancelled classes. Rather then reschedule the group project we lost that time and the due dates werent restructured so here is your groups you have a week and a half. I think that about sums it up other then that rushing through topics while spending weeks on others. It was a mess.
absolutely terrible. Save yourself and do not take this class. Useless lectures, she goes off topic and has a conversation with a student for about half an hour every class. Her questions on quizzes are the specific ones everyone hates. Things like "What was the color of the horses hair 3rd from the right during the war". Uncaring & Impulsive too!
Worst. Professor. Ever! She couldn't even get along with the complete history geeks in our class... that's how bad of a professor she was. Also, she grades your GRAMMAR more than anything on the homework . She grades things that don't relate to history whatsoever.
The topics are very boring and the language of the book she uses for this course is too difficult. Lots of writings where you have to answer one question with 300 words minimum! It is so exaggerated, as questions are too simple. Never take the class, if you do not want to regret.
Although she seemed nice in the beginning, we had a bunch of textbook reading (40 pages a week), plus an additional 20 pgs with a 300-600 word response to it. We would also have quizes every Friday and didn't learn anything from her. Lectures every week 30-60 min. Due dates were always awful: TUES/WED/THURS at 3PM- it was hard to turn in on time.
Class is insanely hard for an online class being taken during COVID. Just finish last quarter and I am still quacking. Never ending lectures, but bad content within. Ridiculously unclear assignments. Dont take these classes whatsoever.
I loved having Professor Spiegler! I had her for an online course because of COVID shutdowns, but I still enjoyed it. Lots of reading from the textbook, and quizzes were frequent. As long as you take notes on the lectures, turn in your work on time + do all the readings youll do fine. Professor Spiegler is clearly very passionate about history :)
She is a very nice person who is passionate about her teaching. Be prepared to read and study a lot, however. Extra credit is offered, and she is a relatively easy grader, but almost never replies to messages or emails. I think the ratings of her are a bit exaggerated. She's not as bad as they say in my opinion
shes a tough grader, but overall her classes are enjoyable, just turn your work in on time and you will pass.
I enjoyed her class very much. you can tell she loves history. she also tries to help students succeed.
Professor Spiegler is a fantastic history instructor. She is incredibly passionate about the content. There is a fair bit of reading, but you'll do well as long as you stay on top of it.
Professor Spiegler is a pretty good professor. I could tell that she was passionate about history based on her lectures and the way she talked to my class. As long as you turn in all the assignments at the due date and pay attention to her lectures, you should be able to pass. She also provides multiple extra credit assignments and 2 late passes.
Spiegler is very engaging in her lectures if you're into history. She loves what she's teaching and that makes class time more fun. There is a lot of material to cover in this class so you should expect to need to read quite a bit. I didn't read most of it but still got a 92.5ish. Weekly participation points so make your time in class count.
Professor Spiegler is super nice and always responds to emails. Her lectures are a bit long, but I found them interesting. There is a decent amount of reading in this course, but it's not very difficult as long as you stay on top of assignments. This class was incredibly easier than the History 146 class I took with Professor Taylor.
you only get one late assignment for the whole quarter
Participate to get on her good side. She stuck in old ways with paper tests, presentations, and activities like middle school. The midterm is hard so study for it if you fail u might as well withdraw because even if you do every assignment u wont pass. The book is useless I spent $80 and didn't read it once, just used for background info.
Im 16 and I got an A. You do have to write a LOT but its pretty easy. TAKE HER HYBRID CLASS THERE IS NO MIDTERM. Show up and participate and youll do good. DO your assignments and try. Pretty easy class, i never bought or looked at the textbook.. She is kind and really passionate, but theres a LOT of hw and reading. GL!
She is a great professor during her lectures, but the amount of work is backbreaking especially for how much information you take in. It almost seems like she wants her work to be your main focus as if you're not taking other classes. She's very passionate about what she does but if I could give any criticism, better pacing and more in class work.
I took her hybrid class. She is very passionate about history. She knows so much and it seems like because of that, she wants you to know just as much in a short time. Lots of reading, long assignments, and long lectures. Her lectures were interesting, but for me they were sometimes confusing to follow because she talks so much. Very harsh grader.
If you're looking for a history professor in Cascadia, just take Perez. She's a tough grader and gives long assignments. If you don't like talking in class, don't take her class, she dropped points just for not speaking in class. Lectures are long and boring. Don't buy the textbook, I didn't read it once.
Very strict and nitpicky about everything—every little formatting detail is treated like a huge deal. It felt like they cared more about rules than about students actually learning. Also not understanding at all if you're going through a rough time. There's no flexibility or compassion. Overall, the class felt more stressful than educational.
I loved prof. Spiegler's class! She was really passionate about the material, and made the class interesting for students. Most of the homework was reading, with some writing and occasional tests. I highly recommend her!
Her instructions are consistently extremely unclear, and if you email her with questions, she will not provide any further clarification and will just tell you to read the instructions. An insane amount of homework/reading/lectures, but if you stay on top of it, you'll do fine. There's no midterm if you take her hybrid class. The final wasn't bad.
I took this class hybrid, and each class had comprehension checks. The lectures were super long, lots of reading and really long writing assignments. The professor is a super tough grader, making it hard to get full points, she deducts a lot of points for no reason.Don't take this class if you don't like reading.
Professor Spiegler deducts points from your assignments without a reason and doesn't give feedback on literally all your assignments. She's more strict about using AI and grammar than your assignment. Also, don't buy a textbook, we never used it in class.
