she assigns 2-3 page papers every couple of weeks; a pain but they do help your
her classes are hard and she is rather boring.
Not an interesting class, De Cunzo was full of herself and had pointless hw's
I learned absolutely NOTHING in this class. Extremely pointless and boring.
worthless class, tons of pointless homework, punishes you for not asking questns
many small papers&unclear what she wants on them untill you get the paper back
nice teacher but demanding. there's many interactive classes
This class is definitely worthless, and she was the worst teacher I've ever had.
Nice, interesting, and makes you think, but very hard grader with essays.
Horrible teacher...doesn't test what she teaches
No Comments
what a worthless class, i am dumber for taking this class
No Comments
nothing she teaches ever shows up on the tests...extrememly boring!!
sorry excuse for a professor
Worthless class; exams have nothing to do with the lectures; DO NOT TAKE!
what a coincidence the textbook she assigned us mentions her
amazing how the textbook she assigned mentions her
unorganized rambling lectures of no use. Unfair grader of essays. AVOID if poss
BORING. Great subject matter, but the class slaughters it!
ZZZZZZZZZZ. Unclear. Assignments unclear. Kills anything interesting!
lectures unrelated to exams, too much work for a group requirement
Interesting lectures - when you are interested in her research, very friendly
PLEASE!!! I beg u not 2 take this class...boring and hard i slept through it
Class was very difficult when I took it--thought I hadn't learned anything. Turns out she gave me a great basis on which to build in other classes :)
Rambling lectures and supplemental materials have nothing to do with exams. Unfair and unclear when grading.
Teacher was very unclear about course requirements. Expects twice as much work as seminar, but has no seminar basis. Very unorganized and extremely boring because of this fact. Recomendation, take something else to give you these credits!
Worst teacher I have ever taken at the U of D next to John Brockman!!!!!!!!!
Too much reading, vague confusing essay exams, boring lectures, not worth it
Too much work for non-major, breadth requirement. Ambiguous about expectations, then grades harshly. I loved the guest speakers, though. T/As not much help. There are other classes I would have taken before this one, in hindsight. Would NOT take it again.
This class is the devil, get out now while you still can!!
BORING, terrible grading rubric, unfair, teaches as a graduate course (8-four page research papers, 3 essay format exams, hundreds of pages of readings, etc.) Took this as a breadth requirement... BAD CHOICE Do NOT take this class.
i despised this class and this women. 8 research papers in which you get penalized greatly in it is not up to her unattainable standards. VERY tough grader... class sucks
Very tough grader. BUT TA was very nice and very helpful. DeCunzo sux. I woudln't take her class. She's got NO POINT!!!
Bad class, bad teacher, not interesting at all
One of the worst classes I have ever had! Stay away!!! Classes are boring, disorganized, and POINTLESS! The entire class is pointless. Tons of work!!! Six 5 page papers and 3 tests. BEWARE!!!!!!!
Worst class I ever had!!!!! Stop removing my review.. this prof sucks and everyone needs to know!!! Tons of work and horrible grading. Classes are great to sleep to.
Blah, blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah, blahblah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah blah. Blah blah blah blah, blah blah blah blah blah. And blah blah blah blahblah. If you can understand that, then take her, otherwise RUN, RUN, RUN as fast as you can!
Rambling lectures of no value, 6 gigantic projects, 3 essay tests and an essay final. Class is boring, work unrewarding, she is a hard grader. Might be an interesting class if taught by someone else. DeCunzo could spend a whole class marveling at a piece of poop and it's significance in society.
Classes are very confusing and make no point at all. Heavy workload for such a boring class. Six 5 page papers, 4 essay exams, and horrible 1800's cooking project..bring your food to class day. If you want a class that has no point and is tons of work, take it.
avoid if possible. Wants her classes to be challenging and eye-opening - this translates into a lot of effort for little return. My TA was almost fantastic looking.
Absolutly the worst class and professor I have ever had at UD. 6 five page papers, 4 essay exams, and the final was 4 essays.. took all two hours. High expectations and a tough grader. STAY WAY FROM DE CUNZO!!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
Absolutly the worst class and professor I have ever had at UD. 6 five page papers, 4 essay exams, and the final was 4 essays.. took all two hours. High expectations and a tough grader. STAY WAY FROM DE CUNZO!!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!
True this class was ALOT of work, but one of the best Anthropology classes I have taken so far. It is a 200 level class but don't think that will make it easy. Very stressful at times. Be prepared to spend alot of time working on projects. Dont take this if you have issues with time management.
Honestly in the beginning this class almost killed, but after awhile I really started to like it...DeCunzo is helpful and nice if you go to her with questions...but the class was still REALLY hard and I wouldn't recommend it unless you are somehow extremly interested in material culture
If you're not willing to put time into this class, then quite simply, you're not going to do well. And you'll probably end up thinking De Cunzo is a ****. But If you're willing to work, it's very rewarding. De Cunzo is quite nice, more than willing to help you if you're having trouble.
She teaches this class like its the most important class in the world and that our view of the world will be changed forever, but the class is really useless. she has an awful habit of answering her own questions with more questions, and the lectures never seem to go anywhere.
just don't take this class!!!!!!!!
Don't take her! Its that simple. Not very clear when teaching material and a VERY unfair grader. She expects you to know every single idea covered in class. Theres an accumlative final less than a week after the 3rd exam

DeCunzo is a great teacher, demanding but fair with a good eye for history.i liked her class and thought she was a very helpful teacher.
I got a lot out of this class, but I was also really interested in how you can learn about the past by both reading historic materials and digging holes in the ground. This is a somewhat scholarly class, kids, so if you're not down with the program, get out. She's not a punitive grader: she just wants results. That said, I graduated nine years ago, and she is one of two professors I remember. She's influenced my mind and how I think. That is a real compliment.
boring, but a nice person.
WORST CLASS EVERRR!! Not only is it the most boring class in the entire univ. but be prepared to go on field trips to the most boring places ever! and dont try too hard on the object lessons. because even if you do, your work will not pay off bc shes an impossible grader. avoid at all costs
sucks
should be a 2nd writing requirement filler, but it's not. AVOID
I really love this woman...I'd strongly recommend these classes.
I really liked this class. But youhave to be willing to put some effort into your work and think outside the box. If you actually try to get something out of the class you will. It is a really interesting way of thinking about things. I'd recommend!
She is a very hard grader and doesn’t give clear instructions. She tries to do too much in one class. She wants you to do her research for her. The easy test questions are loaded opinion questions, but if you don’t see things her way, then your grade will show it. She plays favorites. This is a bad class to take.
I die a little bit every time I walk into her class
Not easy, but I think as long as you try you'll be fine. She curves everything, but not very much. Still, I ended up with a higher grade than I should have had. She's pretty tough on essay questions, which you have on every exam. DO the extra credit--get all the points you can. She presents stuff pretty intellectually. Not an easy A, but possible.
Not an easy class. Her test consists of mult. choice, short essays, and long essays. Even with studying and going to every class, the wording on her mult. choice is so confusing and there are far too many essays that it all becomes one big jumbled mess. Be prepared for a final with 7 short essays and 2 long ones + mult. ch. Do the xtra credit!
I should have paid heed to other ppls comments about her on this website and not taken her last spring. Im an idiot
De Cunzo is demanding, but she is a fair grader. I wouldnt plan on taking her classes unless you are prepared to work hard.lots of reading and her standards for writing are high, but she always offers to proof read and help. Who ever said that she gets students to do her research for her, is smoking crack, thats just not possible.
I'm glad I disregarded the negative comments on here and chose her class. The papers are interesting and easy to write, and the exams are fair. The class also includes field trips, feasts and other fun components. Putting in the effort really pays off. Very interesting and comprehensive intro course-friendly, excited professor. I highly recommend!
She is a really great person who is passionate about what she does. She makes you work for your grade, but it's worth it in the end.
Great teacher, Great class. I'd def. recommend it.
hard class. she knows what she's talking about and the class lectures are really interesting, but the topic is so useless and obscure. the tests are all essays and were hard for me because i really didn't care about the subject matter tested.
Most confusing and unorganized class I ever took. Nothing was clarified, and I never knew what she wanted out of our assignments Never gave good assignment directions and was extremely nit-picky about grading. She's a really nice person, but I just don't care for her teaching methods.
I'd like to start that I'm an ANTH major and LOVE the department, but this class was ridiculous. Her tests were extremely difficult for a 100-level class. I dislike her teaching style immensely. Be prepared to know minute details of the text and lectures. If you ask her what to know for a test, she will tell you "all of it" and she means it.
Treats a 100 level class like a 400 level class. Unclear about what she is going to test you on. She is very nice though.
This is NOT a class you can slide by in without work. Even being an Anthropology major I struggled with the first exam. But she is willing to help if you go to office hours and ask. Overall, if you're not willing to put forth the effort, the class sucks. But if you do, it's entirely worth it!
This class was ridiculously difficult- a 100 level treated as if it were a 400 level. Tests are impossibly long, you have to write the entire time (there is no time to think before you write), and if you have an alternative perspective, you will probably be penalized (opinion based questions with no room for interpretation.)
AVOID! I read all the negative comments and figured I would take it anyways.I regret it. The material was not difficult but her tests and grading are reflective of a 400 level course. She offers extra credit which is good but you'll need it. You could not pay me to take another course with her.
This class was awful! De Cunzo is an archaeologist, not a teacher. All she talks about is Archaeological theory. We had 3 tests and a semester project. The projects were all impossibly hard and only aided her in her own research. Do not take this class! Worst Teacher ever.
The absolute WORST anthropology teacher ever. Vague and cryptic answers to questions. Tough grader and does not test anything she teaches. Avoid like the plague!!!
Awful. Work as hard as you want but if you don't conceptualize a completely arbitrary subject exactly like she does...your gpa will suffer! Expect 400-level course load if you fail to heed this warning: DO NOT TAKE!
Great teacher, taken her several times. She knows exactly what she's talking about but don't take this if you're going to slack off. you will not get the grade. She's incredibly helpful though. Pushed me enough and I'm going places because of her help! Best Anthro teacher at UD.
I love Dr. DeCunzo! She is incredibly knowledgeable, and she teaches clearly & is very helpful. If you pay attention in class and do the readings, you'll be fine. Her classes take time, but you'll come out knowing so much more than before. I would say the only thing I had trouble with is that she speaks very softly sometimes.
I never actually "rate professors" but for this one, I felt it necessary. This woman thinks that she is teaching a graduate level course. I've been to every class & spent countless hours reading & studying &I still may fail. My 3.8 GPA is lost forever because of this class. Test are impossible & going to her office is hours is useless! AVOID!
She is so bad, she is really bad. fo' real. cryptic and incomprehensible. impossible exams. please don't take this course. keep in mind, i'm an anthro. major. i love anthropology. however, if you don't speak in class, she'll reward you by passive-aggressively ending class 45 minutes early!
I have taken many 400 level classes in my time at UD but I believe this may have been the hardest class I have ever taken and IT IS ONLY A 100 LEVEL CLASS! Her test are nearly impossible and my only hope is that she curves, if not the countless hours I put into this class has been wasted.
I thought I would take this class as an elective and it would be fairly easy and interesting. It quickly got really boring and really tough. The homework is fairly easy but the tests are the most obscure things I've ever seen. This class owned my GPA.
She is very difficult and tests extensively on topics covered in reading only. Hardest 100 level course I have ever taken. Not an easy elective if that is what you are looking for.
Did not like her teaching style. Do not take her course as an elective. This class should be an easy A if a decent amount of work is put in. I worked a lot harder and smarter than that and got a B. Least favorite professor at the university.
THE HARDEST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN! Do not take this class as a group requirenment, your GPA will severly suffer. It is a tremendous amount of work that does not pay off because she is such a tough grader if you do not give her exactly what she wants. The work load is that of a 400-level class. Seriously, do not take this class.
SO hard. Everything she says is so general and literally about nothing. Impossible to study for exams (which are all essays) because they could be about anything. Don't take this class if you want an A or B.
Took this class as a Junior, got my 1st B. It'd sting less if I thought I didn't understand the material, but I did. Her standards are too high, and this is graduate level work. I spent a lot of time in her office trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, and it didn't help. She seemed to love my ideas, but she is a BRUTAL grader.
Took archaeology with her freshman year. Class was ridiculously hard. The tests are extremely difficult and require a lot of critical thinking. The majority of her lectures are dull. The class is also expected to respond and participate during lectures.
Don't take this class just to fulfill a group requirement. If you do, it will seem like way too much work. But if you're actually interested in the field of historical archaeology, this class is amazing. You really do learn a lot. To, I'm not the brightest student, but this class wasn't too bad because I cared about what we were learning.
Do not take this class. She was so bad. My first C I have ever gotten in my whole life and I have never put so much time into a class. All of the tests are completely written (you rack up about six pages per test) and only have a limited time. Your hand will want to fall off after each test. Hardest, pointless, and boring class one could take
I'm SO glad I didn't let the reviews scare me away from this course. De Cunzo is an amazing professor, and I'm grateful to have had the change to take this class. It's not an easy A, but it's really not as bad as these review would have you believe. You can get a lot of extra credit, and you will be amazed at how much you learn.
I felt like a highschool kid in this class because of how I was treated by the professor. Notes are extremely vague and not useful. Professor is a hard grader and expects too much from you and asks extremely hard essay questions on the tests (two essay questions on the tests and thats it)
As an honors student I'm used to a high GPA and generally understanding/being able to handle what classes I take. Should've read the reviews. She is an awful teacher. Doesn't go over readings, doesn't prepare you AT ALL for her exams so you'll never know what you're going to get. Ridiculous expectations. Do not take her class, your GPA will suffer.
Took this as a breadth requirement, wish I didn't. Got a C+ with a lot of effort towards the class. Unrealistic expectations and rambles on about nothing the whole class that helps you with absolutely nothing on the tests. She's super artsy and weird don't take this class.
Honestly this class is pretty easy, if you know what she's asking you for. Her assignments are confusing, and she isn't always clear on what she wants, but if you show up to class and do half of the readings you're golden. Looking forward to taking her again.
Dreadful class. Reading the books for this class is a must! I didn't and it screwed me over because trying to study for the tests is impossible without them. She stalls half the time in class and is terrible at telling you what the assignments are about . Avoid her at all costs!
Terrible class. Terrible teacher. I've never felt so behind or confused in a class. Projects and papers are nearly impossible- everything assigned is so vague. Do not take this class, please.
DO. NOT. TAKE. THIS. CLASS. PLEASE. for your SANITY. This class is so much more work than it's supposed to be. It's so totally unnecessary and I have been driven up a wall with the amount of work I have to do. She's always vague about what she wants, and it's impossible to predict if you've achieved what she wants or not! Just don't take this class
I have taken college level Anthropology courses before and loved them, but this class was horrible. Dr. De Cunzo is very vague in what she wants from your assignments. She will not discuss the reasoning behind your grades. And she is also the department chair so you can't really do anything about it. I highly recommend you do not take this class.
I really did not like this class. It fulfilled a breadth requirement but was worse than all my other classes.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. she has her own agenda and makes up words and concepts as she goes.
Her lectures are literally slide shows of pictures with no context, she expects you to read lengthy articles that have not assign and then has tests on them.
Expect to not get higher than a B. She has too many high expectations and will grade you off of her own vague rubric. I went to her several times and she did not give me any advice on how to succeed and make changes. No matter what, this class will make you anxious and make you feel insane.
The class is very interesting, but it is challenging (It is college after all). She is Very nice and happy to answer questions. You get to do quite a bit of alternative learning (guest speakers, fieldtrips, cooking project). Tests are writing intensive. Overall a wonderful class. Im an ANTHRO major but have never had her before.
Tests are extremely writing intensive. Your hand will fall off. Harsh grader throughout the whole semester but somehow I still ended up with an A-.... Participation is not just attendance you actually have to raise your hand and talk or expect a poor grade.
Took this class to fill credits. Makes the class all about politics, when that isn't the basis of the entire course. Super strict grader, would not take another class with again,
Professor De Cunzo is a very nice lady who obviously cares about the subjects she teaches. However, she struggled to present the overall messages she was looking for in our papers throughout her lectures, and her unclear grading criteria made getting anything above an 85 a very tough task. Nice lady, hard class!
I am 11 credits away from graduating. I am a "mature" student and am not afraid of putting in the work. After 2/3 of a semester I still had no idea what she wanted, how she graded and worst of all I learned more about archaeology in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" I dropped the class over frustration. She has been the WORST professor I have ever taken.
Run away! This class is awful, and I've had to hate my way through it for my major. Lectures are vague; tests mostly pertain to the readings provided. You will have a project with multiple parts, will not explain what anything means (so just google "stratigraphy"), and she will take points off without being specific as to what you've done wrong.
Literally the worst professor Ive had in my life. Extremely vague grading system where even if you do everything asked you STILL get bad grades for not doing it precisely as she wanted, barely any assignments so that if you do bad on a single one it brings your grade down a lot, and completely inflexible. No extensions allowed. Avoid at all costs.
Class had 4 projects and 2 essay exams. The essays were time consuming but not bad. The projects were terribly explained, harshly graded, confusing, and barely based on material learned during the lectures. We had to teach ourselves how to do them and then received bad grades when this self-teaching didn't work out. Overall, a disaster of a class.
Professor De Cunzo is very passionate about what she teaches and is very accessible outside of class. However, the coursework is a lot, with readings every week, in addition to the essays and projects every other week. For an elective, it is not an easy A whatsoever. Assignments are usually confusing and you have to put in a lot of work to pass.
15 pts/week for participation, but can say the most basic thing & get pts writing assignments every 2 weeks, but not more than 600 words lects. sometimes boring & sometimes interesting prof EXTREMELY vague on instructions for every single assignment (including midterms & finals) have to ask tons of questions to get a feel for it & still confused
She is very sweet and knows and cares a lot about what she teaches. She is a tough grader, but it is only ever writing assignments. Class can be slow at times but the in class assignments are super easy. If she knows you and you appeal to her interests then she will really like you. Class can also have good discussions.
