Very nice teacher. shes young, so she understands us. You have to write a lot in class, and do revisions on all of your cores. She expects your best work, and you should get an A.
A little difficult at times, but I think its becuase she wants your best work. She's very nice and I would take her again if I could.

I loved her, had for both English classes. She is a great teacher, she knows what she is talking about, and she knows how to teach. I would take her again if I could. Excellent teacher
She is a great teacher. No complaints. I have Mrs. Henken for ENC 1101 and 1102 and I got an A in both, she gives you as many chances as you need to perfect your work. She also understands that your life doesnt revolve around her class!!
Henken as many revisions needed for cores but requires writing center slips.Easyin class but grades harshly.Got an A- after doing 4 revisions per core. Very nice but expects too much.Usually I'm a great English student/writer but not according to Henken
I had good old mrs henken for comp 1 and comp 2 she was the best english teacher i have ever had! revise work as many times as you want and you turn in your best three core assignments out of four. Highly reccomended
best english class i ever took. i had her for 1101 and 1102 and would take another class with her if she had one. really understanding and didnt make you do tons of BS busy work.
Great teacher! Easy on the eyes and the grade. Lets you do as many revisions as you want and she helps you with them. Makes class interesting and fun. Definitely a class to take and you want to go. TAKE HER!
AWSOME teacher. Class is easy and fun. Easy A, just give it your best.
Lots and lots of writing. At least 2 essays per week! Very professional! She is very nice and a great teacher but expects a lot out of her students. I have never written this much in my life!
It's true.. there's a lot of writing to be done in this class.. but she's a good teacher .. the only thing that i have a problem is not knowing what grade you have
She is a great professor...but kinda tough. i worked really hard for my A. u have to participate in class and show lots of effort in your papers and assignments...this is a major key in this class to earn an A. but i learned alot from her.
striking eyes.not a bad human being, but a horrible teacher if you are into english in the least.treats her students like children.we once had an in class assignment involving chocolate chip cookies. easy A,but if you want to learn something, go elsewhere
No Tests, No assignments out of book, grades extremely hard on grammer and content. As many revisions as you want... but you barely gain any points from revision. Rare use of book. Nice teacher, always willing to help.
Lets you revise your papers as many times as you want which basically means you get as many chances as you want to write what she wants you to write. Opinionated, non-objective. Just find out where she stands on your issue and write it down on the paper. You'll save yourself a lot of grief.
I think this is the worst english class ever....she is opinionated and if she doesnt agree with your opinion...she'll tell you that you're wrong. Easy if this is the only class ur taking,,,if not its tto much work for one class!
Yes she lets u revise the paper as many times as u want its not worth it if u have to revise each paper 3 times to get the A. I have always gotton A's in english last SEM the lowest grade I received was an 89 this lady gave me a 55 she is crazy!! She will ask ur opinion and if she disagrees ur wrong
Lets you revise essays as much as you want but you have to do them her way to get a good grade. I have always done pretty good in english but in this class I expect to get a bad grade on each of my essays the first time I hand them in. Havn't gotten an A on a paper yet even with revisions.
Nice lady. She lets you revise your papers as many times as you want but for that reason she grades very harsh. She expects multiple revisions on each assignment and the revisions rarely boost your grade. I don't recommend her.
Professor Henken is one of the best I've had. You are able to make your grade whatever you want because you can rewrite your papers and she only takes the highest score. I made an A. She expects a lot but is very nice and helpful. There are no tests and you don't need to buy the book.
She can be a little intimidating sometimes, but she honestly has a heart of gold. She will be helpful to you if you just communicate your problems to her. Make sure to speak up a lot in this class, participation makes a HUGE difference. She allows you to revise your papers as often as you'd like and assigns many creative and easy projects. Take her
she doesnt let her comp 2 class revise as much as we want, just once. If you had her in Comp 1, she'll adore you, if not, good luck. one of those teachers that hates to give A's
This class isn't easy but it isn't hard. You have to work for an A...not easily handed out. Can be frustrating in grading...spend hours revising to get only one point higher!! Recommend this class, she is the easier of your choices. Allows you to make the rubric...
She is one of the best professors I have ever had. I took her for both Composition 1 & 2. Although she may grade tough at times, you actually learn. She is very helpful & wants you to do well. She expects a lot out of her students. Defiantly take her!! I am going to miss taking her classes.
Very good teacher, her class is an average english class but I learned alot from her. She is very cool. She only give you 4 core papers and a final, thats it no novels! And she believes in Revisions which help your grade alot...it jumped one of my papers from a C to an A. I highly suggest taking her as a proffesor.
I hated English before this class. Ms. Henken made it interesting and I really enjoyed her class. She lets you revise your paper as many times as you want which can really help your grade!! I definitely recommend her... She's great! :)
Great teacher. Lets you revise your comp 1 papers as much as you want. Very nice person and willing to help.
Boring class, but how do you make english fun if you're not an english major? 4 Core papers, allows us to revise unlimited times - this means she grades harsh. Revising is cool, but gets boring because all you are doing is saying you are dumb and she is right. Find out what she thinks about your paper, write it down and get a guranteed B or A.
Great Teacher. I hate english, but she got me back into it. She makes class fun, nice lady, and very fair grader. She grades hard, but she gave us as many revisions as we wanted, and each would replace the last grade. She's pretty hot too. Downside, she grades (+,-) scale, so I got an A-. Definately recommend her though.
TAKE HENKEN!! She is such a good teacher... one of the best out of the selection you have for ENC1101... I loved her!
If you are taking her for Comp 2, steer clear unless you really love writing. She's be great for an upper-level writing course. Used to be an editor, really really hard grader. ALlows one revision, but grades even tougher the 2nd time. If she doesn't like your topic, you're pretty much destined to not do well.
Teacher is very nice, take if you can.
Fun topics to write about, but she is the worst grader I have ever seen. Got a C on every papaer and asked her why and each time she said i was missing something, then I showed her where it was in the paper and she couldn never give me a straight answer as to why i got a C. Nice, seems helpful, but not. Who knows, maybe she just didn't like me.
One of the worst graders i've ever had in my life. Requirements for revisions are absurd. Activities in class are boring but sometimes helpful. Can sometimes be very rude in class. Stay away unless you love to write.
This class wasn't terribly difficult but in class activities can be boring at times and she can come off as a bit rude and demeening if you aren't up to her high standards. Especially during in class revisions on the overhead.
terrible.. thats all there is to say. Avoid at all costs
She is the harshest grader of papers I have ever seen. She gave me Cs becuase she didnt like my topic. Does not understand she is grading college students who dont care about comp. I have never gotten a C on a paper until now. The effort needed to make an A is cosmic in proportion.
I can't beleive what i'm reading in all of these comments. I read her ratings before I took her and now seeing them, THEY ARE HORRIBLE WRONG! She was not biased. She is a very fair grader. She tells you what you need to fix in your revisions, showing you how to do well. There were only 4 cores and couple of extra nice assignments. She was great!
I have to agree that she wasn't an easy teacher but I feel my writing skills improved. If you make an effort to talk to her about your papers she will help you out extremely. If your a good writer, than you will at an advantage.
Had her as a teacher half way through the semester...She was terrible! I would not recommend her whatsoever! Hard grader and tries to listen but dosnt really care what we had to say
Extremely tough on grading. If you don't keep up with the Core papers, it seems like a lot of work all piled at once!! If you can keep up, I suggest taking her; just remember, she's a tough grader!
AVOID AT ALL COST! worst grader! her directions are always vague, but she'll write vague all over your paper.
Kind of a good teacher, but just much much much too nitpicky about trivial issues on your paper. Her criticism is half the time actually helpful in making you a good writer, and the other half of the time helpful in making you HER kind of writer. Be careful if choosing her.
She is the hardest Enlish teacher I've ever had! If you are used to getting A's in English like me dont take her. She is a very tough grader and gives extra writing assignments on top of the core papers which are also graded hard. On our Core 3 only person got an A in our class, 6 ppl got B's. Wouldnt reccomend her if you are looking for an easy A!
Wasn't an amazing teacher. She will say one thing on your paper and you'll fix it, but when you turn it back in, she criticizes something else. Only 4 core papers and 10 little one page papers are really the only grades. Doesn't grade the drafts, only your 2 portfolios.
Didn't like her at first. Got better as the semester went on. No Busy work assignments. 4 core papers and 10 prompts. Not too bad. Really helps you improve your writing. Turn in a draft, she tells you what you need to fix and doesn't penalize you. Not the best, not the worst though.
Absolutely terrible! There are so many english teachers to choose from, AVOID THIS ONE!!! She is insane and ridiculously nit picky when grading and even biased at times. She makes you write as if you were spoon feeding it to a retarded baby. You have to elaborate on EVERYTHING. Do not take Henken!
Wow. I regret taking this class so much. I am an excellent writer. And she agreed with me. She actually read two of my papers to the class because they were the best in the class. However, bc of her stupid assignments I got a B in this class which was supposed to be an easy A. DO NOT TAKE HER!!! Even good writers can make good grades in this class!
Very hard teacher! She practically embarrasses students in class by putting the papers on the overhead and criticizing almost every sentence! I definately would not reccommend her to anybody. She is very close-minded!
She gives many opportunities for improving your work before you're graded, but she also grades very toughly. So if you take advantage of the revision process it's not bad. There are numerous group activities too, so it all depends how involved you want your English class to be. This one is pretty involved.
I found she helps you become a better writer. She uses a lot of peer review so class is not typically boring but she can also be unclear on instructions from time to time. The thing I hated most was how she would ask questions to the class to get people to participate and I would answer but it always seemed like she was looking for some specific am
She is a very difficult grader, but she honestly helped me to become a better writer. TONS of homework! If you're looking to become a better english student, she's definitely worth taking. Very nice/intelligent woman. No text for this class. She expects you to work hard, but the class is not impossible.
Awesome person, not really a hard grader. Extremely helpful with teaching you how to write while not cramping your personal voice. Fav teacher this semeseter, by far. Would definitely recommend
Very hard grader and a big workload. Do not take Henken unless you plan on getting an A by getting an article published to New Voices.
Very frustrating and unclear, hard grader, I do not recommend.
Not too much work. Just little assignments here or there. Very helpful and nice. There are four core papers but you have a million chances to edit it before she gives you a final grade. Very easy.
This class is hard if you think reading papers and writing about them is hard. As long as you put forth a decent amount of effort and follow the reading response/Core guidelines, it'll be easy. She doesn't pick apart your papers cruelly on the doc-cam, she shows you how she's going to grade them, so take notes. Do the homework and you'll pass.
She is a tough teacher-- a very picky grader! If you do exactly what she says you will be fine, but do NOT try to be too creative or she will rip you apart into a million pieces. Also, she currently allows you to re-write the 3 Core papers you have to do (which helps A LOT), but there is a chance she will not do that next semester.
She is so rude and uncaring. Anything you say, she argues back with you making you feel like an idiot. DO NOT TAKE HER! Yes, I got a decent grade, but it was not worth all the crap I had to go through to get it.
If you can deal with her feministic BS, then you should be all right. I sat quietly most of the time and felt like she was trying to lecture the only way to write - her way. Not an easy A, but I'm a math guy and I got a B in the class.
This class is not worth all the drama. She doesn't really tell you what's wrong with a paper and then if you fix what's wrong you still get a bad grade. This is a freshman class. Don't take her if you care to do well or if you aren't serious about writing. Her class was by far the hardest I have taken.
Definitely a lot of work. Be ready to be spending a lot of time on writing. You can do well if you work hard.
Do your work, attend class, utilize resources, and this class is an A. She is strict but helpful. Go to class, listen, and write the way she asks.
Well all I can say is good luck and go to class. Make sure to look over all you papers at least 5 times before turing it in. Its a time demanding class. I got B but it took hard work and long hours to make sure the paper was decent enough for her.
Like ANY college english class, there is a lot of writing. I do not know why people complain about Mrs. Henken. She is just following UCF requirements. Her class can be a tad boring, as most classes are, however she has told me how to improve my papers and given me great feedback. She is very understanding. Only complaint is the last minute emails.
Anyone who says that the class is too difficult has, quite simply, a substandard writing level. She expects her students to write and think at a college level. Henken is easily the best English teacher I've ever had, and she kept me interested in a class I was less than thrilled to take. I loved it!
I consider myself an above average writer, but this class challenged me. It took countless office hour visits before my papers were up to her standards, but it was worth it. She appreciates students who show an effort so if you do that and listen to her feedback, you're sure to do well. Class is usually boring though, try to get to know people.
this teacher is the most unprofessional and unfair teacher i've ever dealt with. I consider myself a good writer, probably better than her. She preaches her way of writing, and if you don't write that way, well get out while you can. I can say that she is evil without any doubt in my mind. AVOID HER!!!!
Luann is an incredible teacher. She'll push you to your fullest potential. Not for the lazy but for someone looking to further their education tremendously. You will not regret it. No textbook, long reading assignments, lots of class discussion, Three major assignments, and final. ENDLESS revisions: use that! Most rewarding A I have ever received.
I do not consider myself an above average writer by any means but I still pulled an A in this class. This isn't the class if you want and easy A but she will most definitely help you become a better writer. If you put in the time and effort an A is totally doable. Attendance is mandatory but as long as you get to know people it isn't bad.
Don't take her. She's a very tough grader and expects the best. You must do everything her way. She doesn't really like creativity either. You're better off taking somebody else.
She's a ok teacher but requires you to do a lot of work. This is not for the people who want to get an easy A. I'll avoid this teacher!
Not a good teacher at all! she makes you write an essay every weekend which are so pointless. At the end of the year you do a reflection on how you did, and she grades it! How do you grade a reflection paper?? Don't take her
This lady is quite simply ridiculous. The lack of organization and structure ends up falling on the students and causes a lot of confusion. She absolutely tears apart everything you turn in and makes you feel retarded. The only options for this class is to fail, withdraw, or revise your work a hundred times. I would not ever recommend this teacher
I have been told by classmates and teachers my entire life that I am an excellent writer, however the first week of class she made me feel inadequate. She was unclear with expectations, unhelpful during office hours, and incredibly condescending. I'm an English major and I am actively making sure that I'm never in another one of her classes.
I'm so glad that i was not the only one who felt strong negative vibes from this professor. She was incredibly condescending. I have never had a worse experience with an instructor in my life. She made me feel as though her harsh grading was personal and her comments were unnecessarily rude.
This professor is UNORGANIZED and very condescending! She is unnecessarily rude with her comments and you are constantly revising her essays. Avoid at taking her class!
She can be very unorganized at times. her assignments are difficult to comprehend, because it seems like she doesn't what she wants either. She takes participation and attendance as a grade. I would NOT recommend this teacher. =/
I am the daughter of an English teacher who taught for 30+ years, and when I showed her my assignments for this class and Henken's comments and grades, she only could shake her head. I've won essay contests in the past, and have always been called a strong writer. This class is very hard. Spend 3 hours on corrections, only raised my grade 2 points.
DO NOT TAKE. This Professor starts the class out by saying there are no wrong answers but every. single. answer. is wrong to her. She is very condescending and every time I leave her class I feel a little less good about myself. Also, the work load is outrageous. Not good!
I would suggest taking another professor, if possible. Her assignments were very unclear and she is an extremely tough grader. I got really good grades in English in high school and I really struggled to pass her class.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! You will regret it if you get stuck in this class and disappointed in yourself if you did not read this comment early enough on here. You will save countless hours writing, revising, and comprehending the assignment.
She doesn't explain what she is expecting for each assignment very well at all. She grades very hard, and takes off points randomly for no reason. She will tell you your paper sucked, but she won't tell you how to fix it.
It's true, this class was not the for the weary of heart. There have been many assignments to work on and plenty of deadlines to keep track of. However, I really loved her class. She makes you work for a good grade, which is rewarding when you do receive one. If you can't handle large work loads, don't take it. I plan on taking her ENC 1102.
Definitely a challenging teacher, you really have to work your butt off for an A. I got a 93 (A-) and worked SO hard, but she didn't round it up to a 94 (A), so that says a lot about her as a grader. She is very UNCLEAR with her expectations, so you really have to ask her. Gives good feedback, but is STILL impossible to please. Wouldn't take again.
She is such a tough grader. Nothing you do will ever please her. When you have an assignment based on opinion, if your opinion doesn't align with hers you're wrong and your grade suffers. She can be rude sometimes through email. Avoid taking her if you can. When you ask for specifics on what you did wrong on an assignment she gets an attitude.
By far one of the worst, most unorganized teachers I've ever had. Every answer/opinion is wrong if it doesn't match hers, she is very condescending, and will cut you off if it's not what she wants to hear. Her assignments are VERY unclear, making it difficult to complete them to her standards, not to mention she takes points off for no reason.
Worst. Professor. Ever. She does not respond to e-mails, ever. She is always unclear in her direction and she will give conflicting due dates (and then when you e-mail her to get clarification, she never replies.) She will never give anyone in the class a 100%. She believes there is always room for improvement, and will grade accordingly.
She is honestly on of the worst professor at UCF, she is is extremely opinionated and if you do not agree with her she will belittle you. Her instructions are vague and unclear. Very rare for her to give a perfect score on any assignment. I would not recommend her to anyone I know.
If you want an easy A, don't take her. However, I took her class for 1101 and 1102 and absolutely loved it. I wish I could have her for future classes. Really helped me grow as a student, and appreciate literature. By far the best professor I've ever had.
Do not take! If at all possible choose another teacher under the same course to get the credit. While it is possible to pass the class, the way she runs her grading process is completely disorganized. She isn't clear with instructions AT ALL, she gives a majority of the work toward the end during finals, and her grading is atrocious for all work.
I would not recommend her to anybody. I love English, it's one of my favorite classes and I have always been good at it. She was awful, to be blunt. She was always unclear about assignments, she was very disrespectful towards students, and lost the respect of everyone after about a week. She made this class hell for everybody. Do not take her class
Toughest teacher I've had, along with the most stressful class as well. Will make sure not to take any of her classes from now on. She makes this class so much more stressful and difficult than it should be. I've had to approach her 3 times now for mis-gradings.
She gives a lot of homework online with a lot of random due dates.
Do NOT pick this professor! I worked SO hard to get an A- in this class. I worked harder in this class more than my 3 other classes combined. She never answers your questions. She is the most un-clear professor I have ever met. Expect homework EVERY single night. When you think you did good on an essay, think again- She'll tear your paper up.
I really liked her! She gives a lot of work (usually something due every class) so be prepared for that, but she's very clear about what she expects of her students. As a class, we came up with a rubric for how she was to grade our final paper, which is awesome. Overall, would definitely take again!
She is the WORST professor I have ever had. She is really mean, you have homework every single night. Her grading system is really hard. DO NOT TAKE HER.
She is so picky with her assignments. She rarely gives perfect scores and is slightly rude in her comments on papers. The class isn't hard its just tedious and you will work so hard to get mediocre grades.
Worst class I have ever had. She is very vague when giving assignments which makes it hard considering she's a very tough grader.
She is the pickiest and toughest grader so it's like she makes it impossible to get an A. She thought a quarter of our class deserved a D or F on our FIRST PAPER. She made me feel like I should have come into the class knowing everything already. She is also very vague with what she wants on assignments. I would not recommend this professor.
Writing warm ups every class, weekend writing every weekend. She is a tough grader, if she doesn't like it she will let you know. Class isn't as hard as it is said to be. But to pass you HAVE TO put effort. Its really easy to fall behind in her class. She is willing to help when you have questions and talk to her.
I liked her a lot. Yes, she is very tough. She does not sugarcoat her words at all. It comes across as a little brash at times but if you actually take note of her feedback and make improvements she will soften up and you will improve. She's actually very nice in person and highly approachable, so don't be afraid to go to her office hours for help.
None of her feedback makes sense, and she is very rude about it. It takes an absurd amount of time for her to respond to any emails I send her. Whether you have been in college for a few years or you are an incoming freshman, I do not recommend this professor. Its her way or the highway.
This teacher genuinely doesn't care about her students. She gives vague feedback. The only good thing is that you can revise and revise your essays for a better grade. Hard to understand the prompts. Made me hate writing. Super mean and sarcastic in class, condescendingly talks to her class.
Hardest teacher ever. I had the highest grade in class and I barely got an A. Three big essays where half the class got an R for their grade, aka they have to revise their essay. Make sure to double check all of your work or else you wont pass.
So, I just finished my first semester at UCF. With the material given in class, youll think this is gonna be so easy, this information is for dummies. Sadly, youre wrong. She is the toughest grader. From high school ive managed to get a 7 on my IB literature exam and a 3 on my AP literature exam and yet I barely passed with a C in this class.
Honestly the most annoying professor. She lost my extra credit and claims I never gave it to her. Is very unclear. Harsh with grading. Don't take her class.
This professor is the hardest (almost brutal) grader I have had to date. She is the person high school and middle school teachers warned you about. That being said, she taught me how to read on a deeper level, learning to note symbolism and techniques. Professor Henken is not an easy A but she is a very good instructor.
I have this prof once a week and the in class is somewhat enjoyable. We start with a writing warm up and then the wrest of the class is the lesson which is very interactive which I like. There isn't much work, only about one-two short assignment a week unlike other profs that have a few long papers due every week.
I have had her for 1101 and 1102 and she is honestly the worst professor I've ever had at UCF. She is VERY UNCLEAR and she contradicts herself all the time. She is the toughest grader and if it's not lined up with her views it's wrong. She's downright rude in class and very condescending. If you care about your sanity or GPA don't take her class.
Extremely tough grader. I went out of my way to do my work and show up for feedback during office hours, yet she condecends me for missing class once.
It was a mix-mode class and for online assignments, there was no way to know what she wanted in them. Just vague descriptions of the assignment. Says one thing in class and changes her mind when online assignments come so the work has to be redone. The whole class is based on one research paper. Do NOT take this class with her, you'll regret it.
Was unclear about everything. Made things harder than what they needed to be. No help at all when she gave feedback on your essays. I revised my essay one time and did all the changed and she didn't change the score. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND
Assignments unclear & often CHANGED close to due date so watch closely. Sneaky "Mixed Format" class also, so lots of online content. MUST check anncmnts & asgnmts pretty much hourly bcuz she will add or change things. you'd better plan on writing dramatic editorials of the scholarly type. She has no time for creative writers. You will NOT get an A.
she doesnt even know what she is talking about. poor grader. looks to find mistakes rather than grade the purpose of the assignment. changed due dates and then showed no mercy when asking to turn it in even an hour late which would have been early if it wasnt changed
Toughest grader ever. Good is never good enough. She will always find something wrong with your work.
changes assignments last minute Even when multiple students told her something was unclear she acts like it's because we're stupid demeaning and not a good teacher Gives huge amounts of busy work for no reason Gets haughty whenever you ask about the way she graded something, even when the grade was clearly wrong
Lots of hidden assignments you have to hunt to find, grades on whether or not she likes your work rather than a clear criteria, condescending to students in class, takes offense if students have a differing opinion, gives conflicting feedback
Professor made this course difficult for no reason. If you dont go to class you will not pass. Gives lots of points for showing up and participating. Extremely tough grader. What you think is an A paper is probably a C. Lectures are very boring and redundant. She requested we buy a text book we never used. Please find another professor.
Make sure to read the module overview for information and assignments Attend every class as participation counts, you will struggle to pass if you don't Do assignments in advance, it's a lot of writing so be prepared Read and consider her feedback it's very insightful and will improve your writing Visit during office hours if you have questions
I would rather go to prison for 5 years than take this professor again. She was rude, contradicting, and demeaning when she made her assignments unclear. I can honestly say I didn't learn anything, her lectures were so boring half the time she was just making herself confused. I would suggest taking literally ANYONE else and save yourself.
take this class is too hard, you will be regretful if you take this class with her..
Very tough grader, hardly ever will she be completely satisfied with your work Vague instructions for specific expected classwork Extremely unhelpful and will reply to you condescendingly when trying to contact her
Gives vague instructions for assignments, and gives horrible feedback when you turn it in and its has points off. Very condescending and hard to listen to. Please find someone else, you will regret experiencing Luann.
I feel as if I always submit decent work but my golly this is the toughest grader I have ever witnessed in my life. If its not exactly what shes looking for then your automatically getting deducted points off assignments.
On a power trip giving undeserved bad grades to hard working students who spend hours working, revising, asking questions and working again. If you want to receive a grade that reflects your work don't take this professor you'll be left feeling defeated. I understand it's harder out of college but this is an entry level class. angry angry
She is very good at teaching and the in-person classes are very helpful. She also gives good feedback on all work. But the class itself is difficult and if you don't show up to class you may miss out on multiple grades. But at the end of the course, I needed 80% or higher on the final to pass the class and she gave me exactly 80% so I would.
Honestly, I thought I would giver this professor a try after reading the comments. How hard could she actually be? Well I've never met a professor who cared less for her lectures and students like Professor Henken. Most of the reviews here are true. She is a beyond tough when grading and will not work with you. HORRIBLE experience FIND ANOTHER PROF
Every single review here is true. This woman has stressed me out more than any English teacher i have ever taken. Her assignments are so unclear. Then the class after its due she takes someones assignments and put up on the screen and then shreds it apart to pieces. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.
never take this class i promise you will regret it
Her explanations are really vague and confusion is really common
Graduated HS with straight A's and an honor's diploma. Felt I could write essays in my sleep. Yet, there were several times I felt like I would fail this course. Nothing is ever good enough. I gave up on "giving it my all" because there is no satisfying her. Expectations are WAY too high for a summer course. Not the way to start freshman year.
I had an awful experience with this professor. Grading is extremely picky and opinionated. Nearly impossible to get 100% on any assignment, as she will say great job and take points off. She bashed every idea I had, even though it is opinion based work. Impossible to please. I do not recommend this professor.
Very picky with grading on completely subjective work. Found myself questioning a lot of her critiques as a lot of times they did not make any sense.
Literally everything is in the Syllabus including one assignment. Harsh grader.
After taking this class I would highly recommend to never take it with this teacher. She absolutely is one of the hardest graders and doesn't accept a lot of good writing. She is very biased and grades off of her own opinions.
She is a very strict professor and is not the nicest at all. She genuinely scared me. The workload is so much for no reason at all. She acts as if ENC1101 is the only important class you have going on. DO NOT TAKE HER!!
DO NOT HAVE HER AS YOUR TEACHER. I would rather hike up the Himalayan mountains then take this class again. She is biased in all grading, even if the assignment is opinion based work, it makes no sense. YOU WILL NOT GET A 100 ON ANY ASSIGNMENT, you need the writing ability of Shakespeare to even get a B. 0/5 PROFESSOR.
I think this class was designed fairly. You have the opportunity and resources to excel if you put in the work. I recommend using the writing center if you are just learning to write.
Even though I did well, I'd advise those whose writing needs work to find another professor as she can be strict with critiques and grading. Definitely has the most time-consuming homework out of my other classes. While I wouldn't say she is unfair, you have to put in work to get out with a good grade.
Thinks she's always right & that her way's the only way of doing things. No rubrics, points taken off for opinion-based criteria. You're writing a paper a week and have tons of added assignments with tons of reading and a required word count. She's rude when she's correcting you. Her lectures are boring. She expects perfection. Horrible grader.
Professor Henken is a very rude and passive aggressive teacher, showing very little care for helping students improve and instead caring more about making sure you know how much smarter she is. Being in her class makes me feel very little of myself, and I dread coming in every time. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!
She will put students' work on the board and pick out the flaws in their writing. A student tried to leave class early and she pulled him aside and would not let him leave. Don't raise your hand in class because 80% of the time she won't accept your response and she'll make you feel stupid for trying. I wish I had more positive things to say.
After looking at the web-courses box plot for grades, I found that not a single student got full marks. There are currently 23 people in my section (a few have dropped the course as well.)
She's not bad at teaching the material you learn in the class, but her grading is insanely tough. Also, her feedback can be confusing and somewhat insulting if taken personally. Your work gets displayed for everyone in the class to pick out errors for. If you're looking for an easy A or are sensitive to (harsh) critique, I wouldn't take her class.
Save yourself and do not take her. I took her fall 2023 just as my required english gep. She grades harshly and gives off the vibe she hates teaching. She also made us print out 3 hard copies of the major assignments and bring them to class which was a hassle compared to just turning the drafts in on canvas.
This Professor is an extremely harsh grader. On any assignment that you think will earn an A, will ultimately be viewed as nothing better than C work in her eyes. Feedback is confusing and contradicting, and it doesn't seem like she cares to understand your ideas in your assignments thoroughly. Not forgiving whatsoever. Do not take her!
She genuinely scares me. Effective teacher in class (despite belittling students) but grades harsher than any teacher I've seen or heard of. Regardless of how perfect an essay is, any part of it that she doesn't like will be torn apart and points off for seemingly no reason. I also saw her make a girl who didn't speak English as first lang cry
Worst grader ever she failed me at first, i emailed her asking for a NC grade, but she said she didn't see "effort" that i put in the class which was very untrue. I emailed her the facts on how i did put effort and she passed me with a C+ a few days before grades were put in. BTW i got an A in ENC1102 so I wasn't the problem and i stand on that.
If I could rate her a 0, I would. Genuinely the harshest grader I have ever had. She critiques your peer discussion posts if you do not critique classmates properly. Her "critiques" include very belittling and snarky phrases. She hardly teaches nor explains assignments. Do not take this class with her.
Professor Henken is a tough grader, but her feedback can help you improve. Bring a thick skin and use tools like unstuckstudy for study prep. If you put in the effort, you can succeed despite the challenges.
Very tough grader.
Bad class with bad professor, completely inflexible when it comes to trying to meet with her not during office hours. Just difficult to deal with in general avoid if you can.
The amount of writing done in this class is excessive. If you are going to take the class make sure you are okay with lots of busy work.
Professor Henken seems like a nice person, don't get me wrong, but avoid at all costs. She was my only B. One of the harshest graders. You write a paper that makes zero sense because the subject matter has to relate to discourse on punctuation and/ rhetoric. It's hard to decipher what she's looking for. Find your GEP credit elsewhere.
Ms. Henken is genuinely one of the most strict graders I've had to deal with in all my years of schooling. However, her feedback is always clear and concise. She's helped me improve more than any of my other English teachers. If you're looking for the easy credit, AVOID her. If you're looking to improve, just don't take her critiques personally.
This teacher truthfully is unequipped to teach. After rereading every aspect of the feedback she provide, no aspect of the is remotely usable. She states please revise without any sort of guidance or weight for change. As the reviews state, she's not critical, she's just rude with terrible feedback. She'd be better providing military instructions.
I would recommend all to avoid this professor. Often she grades based on her current mood leading to points being taken off for honestly her just not reading it. I would understand if she provided criticism on what's going wrong in the writing, but over and over she just demonstrated a lack of being able to understand complex ideas.
I wish I could go lower than a one. She's one of the strictest professors, with opinionated criticisms that make you want to punch a hole through your wall. Would not recommend taking her classes.
Absolutely terrible. She is an extremely tough grader. She gives so much busy work assignments. Good luck getting an A or even high B in this course.
This professor grades off of vibes only. I would not take this course with her if you just want the GEP done with. She can and will give everyone harsh criticism, your grade will be affected as well. To give the benefit of the doubt, she's not actually bad at teaching.
Terrible class, wouldn't even let my child attend it. She was going to be my last straw, before I dropped out of college entirely. Do not, by any means, even think about taking her class, I'd rather suggest you take a class at Valencia in order to fill the credit and then bring it to UCF.
This class was a bit tough, but I do think her harsh criticisms are helpful to bettering yourself as a writer. It helped me realize I was creating mediocre work and pushed me to do better. It is a lot of assignments, however I think her feedback is helpful. She doesn't like when people don't actively participate so be wary of that.
Probably the worst professor I ever had, AVOID THIS CLASS.
She gives good feedback but after she grades your assignment and gives the feedback you can't do anything to change the grade. She also is a teacher who doesn't give out 100% unless it is above perfection. I had to drop the class because I was unsatisfied with the grade I had and the writing I was producing didn't seem to be what she wanted.
She grades confusingly:) I do not enjoy going to her class at all:) It gives me the vibe that she did not really care and really supportive tbh. Once there was a project and she kept rejecting my idea:) I asked for her help but gained nothing, she js doesnt really wanna help.
If you are looking for the easy credit, DO NOT take her class! Take it online, take it with another professor, do anything but take it with this professor. She is very strict on grading and her help is nothing but harsh criticism.
No advice she gave was ever useful. Went to the writing center after she gave me a C and was told that my essay was fine. Makes up random rules on canvas discussions, would have us reply to the 4 comments following ours without specifying whether she meant the comments below or time-wise and took off points. Taking out her anger on students.
if you're expecting an easy A for comp 1, don't take this professor. She is extremely serious about the subject and expects perfection; if your work is not how she wants it, you're going to get an average score. Taking this class was like a never ending critique telling me i'm practically illiterate.
