He teaches second semester physics as if his students are fluent in upper division mathematics. His approach ignored the level of the math prerequisite (only calculus 2), and his lectures leave you unprepared for the tests, as well.
He uses big words and i can't understand him sometimes. He doesn't really teach but just goes over the examples. His tests are hard and half the class drops out before the W deadline, but his sylabus to get a B is decent.
He is really hard. He does care if you got the right answer. He only cares how you got to the right answer and if its the the same way as he does it he marks it all wrong. If you take this class study all day and all night.
He undoubtedly has a deep understanding ab't materials. Lecture's fast, covering as much material as possible. It's hard until you review and preview his notes regularly. But don't worry. I've done all PHYS140, 141, & 142 with him, with 3 As :)
Really hard. You just have to follow his lecture very quick. He teaches very fest. Gotta study all day, all night. If you do that, you will get at least B.
This is a 1 unit class, but he makes it hard. If physics is your favorite class, you should take him. If not I guarantee you only want to get over the class. He put as much as he can in his lecture, and sometimes you get lost when you study his lecture. Not highly recommended.
Physics is hard! Mr.Desmelt is wonderful but he is not easy. The first test made me cry but after that the tests were resonable. We started with 30 people and we ended with around 8. So, that tells you that you have to STUDY! But, it physics or eng. is your major or you like physics then this is yo
Very hard teacher. Doesn't spend time to review homework and even if you answer the question right on the test, he will find something wrong with it and mark you down. If there is nothing wrong, he will make something up!
I studied my HARD for a test, and i get an F (not like 50% F, more around 25%). In 142, it's all written concept questions, so he can nitpick all he wants. It also seems that he shows favortism towards girls, because a girl who knows less then me did much better and passed the class(where i dropped)
YOu just need to study everything he teaches in the class ( specially his notes) then you should be able to do well. ^^
Just one word about this teacher: BAD!! if you wanna take him, god bless you
I had him the whole year. He is one intelligent man..his is basically a calculator. He is hard..physics is hard and both put together the class is hard. I studied my behind off and i got a B/C! I got a C second semester and i studied like crazy. i even got a A on one of my tests! He is the only one who teaches so just try him! study go to his office
SO Easy!I don't know why some ppl find him HARD.Even if I took the test with my eyes closed,I would probably still get A in his tests.Hello!you get A if you have 88%.He is knowledgable, but not as SMART as some ppl indicated. But he is way above average though. His tests are easy!some come directly from lecture. If you still fail, somethin's wrong!
Well you can't blame on him; physics is hard!! But he is a great lecturer. He can't review because he doens't have time. He didn't even teach Thermodynamic and wave/sounds during my phy 140 because he was running out of time. Now I have to learn them myself. I don't blame the teacher, i blame that students who cannot handle physics so quickly.
He was a horrible teacher. Physics itself was interesting because of what could be done with it and he understood that. However, he could not relate to the students what was happening. He also had hard tests in which he rrequired you to come up with formul
we walk into class and he says this is the mass and circumference of the earth and there are 8 fl oz in a cup..how many cups of water are in the ocean..you got 5 min. no calculator..if oyu cant do it then leave my class..thats what this maniac did the first day of the night class..
His lecture is actually pretty good, it's just that he has an acent. He teaches concepts very clearly, you really get to learn "physics". This is my 3rd time taking physics, but it's my first time understanding it! Luc is nice and if you have problems, go and ask him when he looks he is in a good mood, he would be very happy to help you.
if you want to learn physics, this is your teacher. if you just want to pass he is not your teacher. I find his lectures incredably interesting, he showed me a new world :)i strongly recomend him :)
Do not take him!! You will fail. I have taken hardest teachers in ohlone and did very well. But this guy is evil. His test makes u write 5-6 pages both sides. he want detail that he does not cover in class. He grades like he want to take revenge & loves to take points off. Will not care if ruin other students career. in fact he will love to.
Mr. Desmedt's high standards, clear lectures, and open-ended-format tests that he grades meticulously make him my favorite teacher at Ohlone (of the over two dozen I have had). I was always told that I think like a physicist; Mr. Desmedt's course taught me what this means. He gave me a new fascination for physics and a new respect for language.
Great professors who cares about his students and wants them to understand physics. But students need to spend time and effort to do well.
Physics is difficult, but this course is impossible unless you have a strong engineering and mathematics background. Do not take this course unless you can understand the abstract and derive formulas. Prof is nice as a person but has NO patience for students who don't get it. Again, not for those with an IQ below 170.
Desmedt does know his physics. His is teaching MIT/Caltech material at a junior college. Class is almost graduate level. Real hard, need to spend lots of time on homework. Physics is foundation for all sciences, all Natural sciences. Science of Nature. This is great class, for an absoulute important subject for the future.
He is a hard grader. YOu don't understand what's he writing about. Tests as well as labs are hard. He gonna take away your points when you forget minimal things.
Desmedt is the most difficult instructor in terms of his coursework. He really knows his physics, and as physics major, I feel like I am being given a gift in terms of preparation for transfer. Essential that you know your physics prior to enrolling, he expects you to know the basics, and study A LOT on your own. He's brilliant and a great prof!
Dropped his class; his hand-writing is difficult to read; his questions are extremely hard. I was not going to pass that.
We were given, on the last day of class, a midterm to complete and we had to turn it in the next day even though we didn't have any instruction. Plus, he taught us new material on the last day of class that we were expected to know for the final exam. He doesn't know how to manage his time well; this made it hard to learn the material.
Gives thorough textbook-like explanations in lectures. Only 3 labs (uses other lab hrs for lecture). 20+ min breaks every 1-1.5 hrs. Will keep you 10 min after class to finish lecturing. Study notes & do HW = decent test grade. Don't even bother reading the book. I repeat, STUDY NOTES. Read only recent reviews because class gets easier each year
He is really knowledgeable!!!But we have to attend the lecture as well as the dicussion. Very nice professor although the tests are very hard!
Desmedt is a supernice gentleman. He really wants his students to learn. Pay attention on his class, study every of his notes and do the homework, you would be an absolutely A+. He is not hard, if you study.
Not an easy teacher. Material is hard enough to understand, and his help is semi-helpful. Have to memorize formulas for quizzes and tests, which you don't at a CSU. Formulas were always given for my friends physics class at a CSU. Labs are fun and helpful with understanding concepts, but rare. Not many people pass tests and he blames the students.
If your academic ethics is for an A, then this is NOT the class for you (perhaps reconsider your goal). However, If you have true passion in grasping the mechanics of the natural world then look no further. He will shake your fuzzy thinking and make you see beyond the equations. Take this class as a tool but not as a class and you will succeed.
Professor Desmedt is a very smart teacher and he knows his Physics however, he is not a very good teacher. He spends too much valuable class time going over things that you SHOULD NOT do on problems and goes of on tangents with his rants. If he would focus more on teaching then he would be good and most of the class would easily get As.
He is super nice, he will help you pass even if you don't do well, just give your best. Good teacher, just hard when it comes to tests, so be very prepared. recommended.
The tests are his notes, just memorize them and spit it out later. It's better to understand the stuff, since it's 3-4 pages of writing each test. 6 tests total, include final, usually 1 test every 2-3 weeks and lowest test will be dropped. Final has 2 subjects, quantum mech & optics & only 2 hours. 82%=A. Common phrase in test "explain everything"
A wonderful well-mannered Professor.
The tests are hard. The best thing you can do to prepare for them is to work the problems and be meticulous about the details. His time management isn't very good at all. As the semester progress, you'll begin to realize that there isn't enough time for him to give adequate coverage of the material. It took 12 weeks to cover four chapters!
physics/math is the foundation for All sciences. physics is the foundation for All of Nature. space/time energy/matter. Atom election. proton... this is great class. great teacher. lots to master
The class is very hard. It is highly theory based. I had a problem with algebra and symbolic analysis. Desmedt is a great teacher, he will give you insights into the theories but he will expect you to know the mechanics in great detail. There is a guy name louie, he explains the lectures so clearly making the class sounds almost too easy.
Desmedt's class is not for the lazy. Whether you are an A or B student it doesn't matter, you are still fish bait in this class. Desmedt will teach you much about this little world that we live in, make you think differently and question the "assumptions" that you make. I got an A in the class, it is tough but you learn tons. Great teacher but GL!
He's pretty straight forward. Tests are based on homework. He's one of the best teachers I 've had so far in Ohlone :P
Professor Desmedt is the best physics teacher I have ever had. Really easy A if you just practice problems on worksheets he gives out in class. His favorite phrase is "let the book of nature guide you."
he is really nice and helpful. pesonally, i like him very much. But he is not really organized as a physics teacher.at the end of semester, we didn't even cover the hardest chapter at all, which is still include in the final. we have the 3rd midterm 4 days before the final. Math101c is not required. But i think he use a lot methods from math 101c.
He is an awesome teacher. I found his class to be very useful. One sugguestion that I recommend for his class is that Desmedt should give his students some sort of extra credit. This would help those struggling students who are new to taking physics still success and have an incentive to take future physics classes.
This class is VERY tiring and MENTALLY EXHAUSTING. He doesn't do lab so it's two 3 hour lectures. Unlike 140, EVERYTHING he writes down on the board is a derivation and EVERY WORD needs to be known and memorized for the tests. Also you MUST get your hands on old tests to not be at a disadvantage. If you don't wanna die take it when u transfer!!
Not a bad teacher psyics is just hard in general. Gives some useful advice and has hard tests. Only need 76% on tests in class for an A. 50% on tests for C
Luc was great- very helpful, warm and friendly. He really wants students to succeed and takes a genuine interest in his pupols
EXCELLENT instructor, highly recommended! Professor Desmedt is very smart and reasonable. He takes time to ensure that the class is taking in the material, instead of rushing on to new topics. Physics isn't easy but Professor Desmedt makes it more accessible than other instructors. The only complaint is that he was teaching too many other classes..
Friendly professor but the subject is ridiculously hard. I suggest those who plan on taking Physics with Desmedt to study hard and to pay real attention in class. Good luck!
He's an amazing professor! Physics itself is difficult, but this man will literally take his time to make sure everyone understands the subject. He will extend online homework, push back exams if he feels the class is not ready. He will answer any question you ask to best of his ability. The only problem is that his handwriting is very hard to read
Tests are EXTREMELY specific and Desmedt wastes too much time going over the "wrong way" to do problems and his handwriting is sometimes hard to read. Often comes late and class ends up going longer than it's supposed to be. Desmedt tries to help, but his way of teaching is just confusing for many, about half the class dropped by the W date.
I had the pleasure of having Dr Desmedt for Physics 140 and 142. He is hands down my favorite professor from Ohlone. He is extremely knowledgeable and humble to his students and works extremely hard to let his students grasp the difficult concepts in physics. I enjoyed his lectures a lot and started to appreciate how amazing science truly is.
He is a nice person, but the class is just so hard my friends at SJSU had easier physics class than I do on the same topic.
Physics 142 is one of the difficult physics course taught at Ohlone. This class is an extremely exhausting course. Professor Desmedt would spend almost all 3 hours up on the board lecturing. I almost failed the course. You MUST take notes on whatever he puts on the board. FAIR GAME for exam. I do recommend to take this course somewhere else.
Wow... just wow. I have never seen a professor like this before.. We are on week 6 out of 18 and we are still on the first chapter. Unclear, painfully long lectures and explanations. He hands out packets that are hand written and filled with errors and hard to ready handwriting. He will make you hate physics with everything you have inside you.
Don't take physics at ohlone, transfer somewhere else.
He spends a lot of class time teaching you how to do a problem, then says that it's the wrong way to do it, which makes no sense, why teach the wrong way? His tests are also very difficult and his writing can be hard to read. He should probably try to spend more time explaining the correct way to approach problems instead of wasting time.
Blatantly, he is very passionate about physics, but not so passionate about teaching his students. He spends half the class time telling students what they usually do wrong in the test that we never get much done in class. He belittles you personally if you try and ask for help. The amount of homework is literally impossible to finish.
He presents the material in a manner I find not only accessible, but inexorably beautiful with his lexical prowess. His lectures are delivered with a rare eloquence that almost cradles the ear. You'll imbibe a certain regard for language, cultivate precision in your word choice, and learn that physics lies as much in the domain of words as numbers.
If you are looking for an easy way out, this professor is not for you. Physics is a difficult subject which requires lots understanding. My advice for students is the copy everything that he writes on the board because anything is fair game for the test. It's easy to fall behind, so study regularly. Don't underestimate this class. GOOD LUCK!
Learned basically all my math and physics from Desmedt. Lectures are long but *very* detailed- if you can pay attention and study a lot you will learn so much from his class. 140 tests are mostly from the packets he gives out, 142 tests are all from lecture. Friendly person, labs are fun but pretty useless, plan to study every day for this class.
One good thing is you only need 50% on tests to pass the class with C, but it is so freaking hard to even get C on the tests. His handwriting is so TERRIBLE. It is hard to concentrate on his handwriting and his voice at the same time. VERY TIRING course. He thinks we are smart or whatever. Unclear long lectures and difficult exams, just don't take
Unfortunately, on top of being a difficult subject, Professor Desmedt happens to make it even harder. His handwriting is barely readable and his packets are very confusing. He skips a lot of steps assuming that we know exactly where he is. Not to mention, by the time we took the final (our 6th test) he had only graded and returned 2 tests.
Definitely his tests are the hardest tests that I have ever taken not just in physics but all other classes' tests I have taken so far. He likes to ask not just calculation but also conceptual questions on the tests so be cautious on your study. He gives out packages and writes most of the lecture information on the board so take notes and study.
His lectures are by far the best I've had in any science class. He is able to grab your interest in the subject by explaining how physics progressed in a historical manner. He does implement a lot of math like vector calculus and diff eq. I recommend taking the highest level math classes in conjunction or before taking his class.
This class is very difficult to take. Class is not engaging. However it is much easier than 140 or 141. Stay engaged and do all the homework and you will pass.
Professor Desmdt was a really interesting teacher. He doesnt do a lab so he basically lectures for 4 hours. I could say is handwriting could be improved but he was a good teacher and made you think out of your comfort zone. This class wasnt your normal plug and chug equations class but it was more of a how to derive the equations. Great teacher!
The best physics professor I've ever taken. I always feel like he's one of the select few that can convey concepts this clearly by leading up to scientific discoveries the way he does and with great elegance. He teaches 142 in more depth than any book does. That being said, his tests are quite challenging. He is approachable and very smart.
I highly recommend that you've taken E&M and Calculus III / ODE before you take Physics 142 with him. The math is very complex. Does not lecture from the book, only his notes and handouts. So take lots of notes. If you are not sure about what he's writing or on concepts just ask.
Tough Physics professor. I tried hard but the lectures were too difficult as it was not from the textbook. Take notes during lectures. Quizzes are unfair as most are tough conceptual questions. No matter how hard you try, securing an A is impossible
He's a great teacher and knows his stuff, BUT his exams are ruthless! There were 28 people at the start and 10 at the end. First exam, 17 failed and 11 passed. Exams are heavily conceptual and barely computational like other phys classes. Grades the exam with no mercy, just nothing but slashes! Say
This is the first time I realized that whatever professor you have can have a huge impact on your future. Other physic classes in Ohlone have half of the class getting A. And in Desmedt more than half of the class ends up dropping the class since they will end up failing it if they stayed. Grades might not be everything, but its impossible to pass!
Dr. Desmedt is honestly a nice guy, and genuinely wants his students to pass. However, he's very difficult to learn from. He'd spend a majority of the time on concepts theoretically, and would speed through actual problems making it hard to follow. Tests were similar to the questions he'd assigned, but modified to be way harder. Avoid at all costs
One of the best professors I have took. He doesnt like to just tell the students bunch of equations, he tries to give you conceptual knowledge so that you actually understand how those equation were derived. I really liked the background information he provides to give sense of how great physicists came up with certain ideas. Sense of humor is A+
Test really check if you truly understand the material. If you do the booklets he provides, youll do quite well on the test. Really goes out of his way to help out the students. Does multiple problems with various methods do that you see different ways of solving a problem. Lectures are really interesting. Do the booklets, attend lectures.
I've been studying at Ohlone for 4 years and I've taken many classes so far. Honestly, this professor is the WORST I ever took.
I took him for phys 140 and currently for 141. The mans a genius. Teachings styles on point. I originally registered for a different professor for 141 due to schedule but had to come back to desmmedt. Likes to give you a sense of real physics. Honestly changed the way I look at calculus and physics forever! Study his handout for tests!
He knows his stuff. Can not teach. If you take this class, ask as many questions possible. Very frustrating course acts like we should know physics beforehand.
As having a high GPA, this professor is the only reason I could not go to Berkeley. The material he teaches is nearly impossible to find on online sites/videos. He demotivates me to pursue a career in engineering since he gives complex problems. Wrote on exam to drop his class with ferocious red slash marks across paper. Take physics elsewhere.
I currently take phys 141. He is a nice professor with teachings styles on point and giving you a sense of real physics. Honestly changed the way I look at calculus and physics forever! Study his handout for tests! Dont be scare his class, you will be learn a lot from this professor!
prof Desmedt is the best physics prof in Ohlone. His lectures are very interesting, and he covered the topic very well. Exams are fair. I took all three classes with him. I got A in all classes. He is very friendly and care a lot his students. He is an expert in Physics, and he even know very well other subjects such as maths, chem, etc. Take him!
Focus on lecture guys
He's a great physicist, I'll give him that. He knows what he talking about, but he just cannot teach. I struggle to keep up with his lectures because so much of it is theoretical. Spends too little time doing word problems, and talks more about the history/theory of it.
He has such a passion for physics that he just can't teach it properly. He makes his own difficult exams. Handwriting is hard to read too.
There is no doubt that his class is hard and his handwriting is hard to understand. But... he uses different life examples to teach and make the course material interesting. He wants us to spend time understanding the material instead of just memorizing. Everything on the exam is fair game. He talks and writes really quick so be prepared
Excellent lectures, really cares about a conceptual understanding and not just plugging in numbers. If you go to class, take good notes, and STUDY HIS HANDOUTS the class is not that hard. Tells you pretty specifically what is going to be on the exams, and I think they were very fair.
Luc Desmedt seems to be a decent professor, but he grades homework assignments very mediocrely and midterms very, VERY hard. Please follow him up VERY carefully. If you don't, FIND SOME OTHER PHYSICS PROFESSOR THAT TEACES YOU VERY WELL!!!
Mr. Desmedt focuses heavily on his lectures for tests and quizzes. I literally wasted money on a textbook; only buy an access code. He is always late to class, and 75% of the class dropped in the second week. Rambles throughout his lectures and ends up not being relative to the material you need to know. He assumes you know Calculus.
Wanted to warn those in the future: class is only lectures and labs are 3+ hours of lectures. Exams are from lectures, NOT the textbook. Some of the homework is not even from the lectures and you would need to learn from the examples on Pearson. Terrible handwriting: people got problems wrong because he wrote numbers as variables. Confuses class.
Professor comes in late 90% of the time. Makes a lot of excuses regarding whether he is absent or not. Does not make an effort to actually contact students. Your time and money will be wasted; I wouldnt recommend taking his class.
Worst decision of my life to take this class. Overly complicates problems for an intro class, which can drag on for an hour +. Try your best to avoid to class and life will be much better for you.
Before taking his class, I never imaged PHSY-120 can be this tough. His physics class is like a combination of Math, English, and Physics. There are many word problems that are hard to understand. There are also "writing a paragraph to explain" questions. Homework is online, they have nothing to do with the exams. Think twice before registering.
So, this teacher is a good guy but it is laughable how bad of a teacher he is, I would find myself in class laughing because Id find out he gives pop quizzes and exams and homework on things he hasnt taught and he admits it. He expects you to teach yourself. If hes your only choice at ohlone, find another school. Dont waste the money.
This teacher is so self aware that his class is so hard to pass to the point he has created a forgiving grading system. Your grade will be boosted a whole letter grade, however, you still wont pass, , dont let the teacher give you hope or fool u into continuing his class. Stay away.
Without a doubt the best teacher I had in College. People are right to say he is very difficult, he is, but if you want to actually learn this material, it is worth it. I understand the material on such a fundamental level, and my problem solving and calculus skills were brought to totally new levels, even after completing the calculus coursework.
This teacher will lecture for 3 hours and youll only understand about 20 mins of it because he just writes a bunch of stuff down without explaining it and hardly ever gives students examples to try the material for themselves. Waste of time and money, the textbook is better at teaching and u dont even use it.
RUN AWAY!!!! He's the worst. You cannot read what he writes, worst handwriting ever, and there's no way to make sense of it. Sure, nice guy, but English is his second language, and you know it when he writes his horrid handouts that are messy, unedited and drone on about things that have nothing to do with the real work. RUN AWAY RUN AWAY RUN AWAY!
Professor Desmedt is the worst professor at Ohlone, I have taken physics before and an English professor could teach it better than he can. The class is "Algebra based" but he expects you to understand calculus at a high level and be able to derive equations at a physics major level. Grading is unfair, I got the highest grade and still got a B :/
Let's start with the handwriting. He's probably left handed and hasn't realized it yet. Let's then move to the feedback. There's none. Considering he replies to emails quite rapidly, this is doubly puzzling. I have assignments from months ago that he hasn't graded, let alone talked about. Then there's the abandonment of the textbook.
He is the most committed and accessible prof I've had throughout college. Does everything in his ability ensure that the material is received and understood. Pay attention during lectures and take notes - you'll be a better Physics student for it. Dropped tests and only gave assignments to save his students undue stress during COVID unlike others!
Took him during the COVID. He gave a bunch of assignments each week instead of exams due to the situation, which i guess is better. But you can't understand his handwriting. Doesn't reply back to emails. DOesn't enter grades so I was worried the entire semester about how I was doing. Struggled to get an A. Take someone with better reviews:/
Hes a Moran, through the whole time of teaching he talks to himself, if you want to fail and feel like human waste take his class.
A mixed bag at best. His intentions are to prepare you for future classes and improve your standards for work, but in that process he comes off as petty and criticizes students mistakes rather than correcting them. During lecture he goes into ample amounts of details but he needs to learn when to move on ( ESPECIALLY in an accelerated course).
If you really care about learning and physics dont take his class then. You gonna fail the class no matter what.
His class is More of European History class than Physics,
I went to Ohlone from 2017-2018 and recently graduated from a top-tier UC. I had the misfortune of taking Prof. Desmedt for Physics 141. I blame him for giving me a horrendous foundation in E&M. This is a critical course for engineers, but he is a highly incompetent educator. He will make you hate physics. Please: avoid at all costs.
Don't know what he's teaching, especially on Zoom.
Worst class at Ohlone College. Lectures are very difficult to comprehend due to his handwriting. He goes off on random tangents about random topics so it is hard to follow. He is a very tough grader and expects you to follow his exact methods for problems.
If you guys want to listen stories of this professor life take him. If you guys want to learn physics then find another professor. He always criticize your high school professors insult students while lecture. Always try to put student down. instead giving students confidence he try to make them feel bad.
The worst class I have ever taken. He has terrible notes and lectures that don't make any sense. Do not take him, you won't learn any physics. He makes people feel bad when they ask for help. I have to teach myself through Khan Academy.
Grades way too harshly on exams. He is way too specific for them and his lectures don't make any sense.
His lectures are confusing I don't understand. When I asked for help I still didn't understand. Take another physics prof. Literally any other.
Yeah, he's difficult, but He's probably better than some other prof at this school, so take him! I recommend looking over notes after and before every lecture so you aren't lost. Also, don't get distracted by his handwriting, just pay attention and show up to office hours, you do that and you will pass easy!
Near impossible to read his handwriting. Doesn't stay on track. Cameras off always. Makes you have your mic on during exams. Exams were the hardest I've taken. 2 parts for each one: Mastering Physics & in class all horrible word problems. ALL scores on in-class exams was LESS THAN 50%. 2 midterms + final. Last 2 were group exams.
Not a good professor. Talks and talks like he's trying to make you fall asleep. I appreciate his effort at trying to make you laugh every once in a while but somehow manages to use six hours of lecture a week constantly talking non-stop while staying on the same PDF for almost an hour and a half. His handwriting is not readable. Take someone else.
Do not take without previous Physics experience. Explains physics very badly, hard to comprehend. Only able to survive with past physics knowledge and chegg. Only three tests (2 midterms and final). Lectures are completely useless, rambles, goes over one ridiculous problem per 3 hour lecture.
This professor remains true to many of the reviews, he is very difficult to understand during lecture. His lectures consist of long and boring topics, one of my biggest problems is that he goes on random tangents about unrelated topics, or nags about another teacher or person for 30+ minutes, and manages to only do one problem in 3 hr sesh.
This guy will berate you for breathing in his class. All the midterms so far, you can literally get the right answer for every question but the prof will knock half ur points off because you didnt have the work thats the way he wants it. Doesnt care for his students, and thinks he invented calculus. reevaluate ur life before you take his class
Worst professor you could ever pick at Ohlone. This guy purposefully makes physics a million times harder than it actually is. Instead of showing us how to solve physics problems, he spends his time showing us where the formulas came from and the rest ranting about random things. He'll spend only 10 minutes per lecture explaining the problem.
He is too smart for his own good, He will go off tangent in lectures, so my recommendation is to go to his office hours where you can actually get him to answer or clarify stuff. Other than that, his tests are extremely hard, and if they are in groups most of the times, which means your group intelligence level reflects the grade you get.
He is the best professor I've ever had in my life. Easy grader, Interesting Lectures, Easy Tests. Just show up and you will get an easy A.
Great professor. Highly recommend
If you pay careful attention to his lectures, you will pass easily.
I personally don't recommend Desmedt. His handwriting is terrible. He lectures, and lectures and lectures and doesn't want to stop. Even if someone wants to ask a question, he would not stop. His exams were hard and you have to follow his expectations. If you take good notes and actually pay attention, you'll be able to pass his class easily.
Do not take his class! His handwriting is so BAD it is impossible to read, the exams and NEVER like any homework problems or examples. He dislikes the fact that his students use the textbook or outside sources to learn, he will make you feel bad!! His lectures are so sloppy, long and boring. Super bad teacher and he knows it.
Unorganized and unforgiving when it comes to grading. Syllabus is so confusing it is hard to figure out were assignments are. Made me upset is that he clearly states, whatever he is teaching will be on assignments and test. Meaning you try to study anywhere else, it will be useless because its not from him. What he teaches, not on the test as well.
DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! The 5 star reviews below are fake reviews made by him. How do I know? 30 min of our lecture time was wasted so he could complain about how the reviews here were extremely biased and how students "don't appreciate my attention to detail". Don't waste your money or time! Luc is out of his mind and should stop teaching.
By far THE worst professors at Ohlone. All the good reviews are sponsored by Luc himself as he said "I don't know why my rmp score is low they should do something about that" and he took it upon himself to boost his score. Midterms are one of the most difficult you will receive average score of 30%. Lecture notes are also impossible to understand
Prof. Desmedt is really cool and extremely knowledgeable, but he's not a good teacher. His teaching method is really slow. We often spent 1.5hr lectures on one single word problem. There are only 2 exams + a final (non-cumulative). I know he truly cares for his students, but unfortunately, because of his teaching method, I wouldn't recommend him.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!!!! Luc is absolutely out of his mind and should refrain from teaching permanently. Be prepared to take notes for 2 hours on 1 problem when we were supposed to cover 5 different problems. Don't do as I did and take his class because no other teachers were available. The best thing to do is wait another semester.
Professor Desmedt was very difficult, but I found him to be a great lecturer who really cared about physics. You do have to go the extra mile with notetaking, participation and studying outside of class, but if you can do that, you should be able to pass the course comfortably. He's very friendly despite being a tough grader and a taskmaster.
If you just want the credits, take another class. If you want an in-depth, philosophical understanding of physics, take his class. You'll need to go the extra mile and work hard. However, you will walk away with a profound understanding that you cannot obtain by just reading a textbook or watching 1 or 2 videos. He knows his stuff very well.
Took him for Physics 140. And I found him to be a very nice person who cares a lot about teaching the subject. But get ready for him to talk three hours nonstop about Physics as he's lecture heavy to the greatest quantity. And he assigns homework assignments in the weekend that are very hectic. His exams also require a lot of thinking and studying.
It is clear from the start that Professor Desmedt is extremely knowledgeable in physics. However, this is a double-edged sword because he will often go on tangents about the history of the concepts that don't help with the class. In order to pass, you really have to go the extra mile and attend office hours, participate in class, etc.
If you guys want a good and reasonable grade, you shouldn't take his class. He's super LAZY guy so we were unable to see our score for midterm and final term until the end of the due date of final grade. He will persuade you guys to keep his course mentioning "almost you guys can get a A". -> It was totally fake. 3 guys in the class only got a A.
This man has the worst handwriting in the world.
Spare yourself the pain and don't take this professor.
Forget everything else, just his handwriting alone will make you hate life.
This professor is long winded and leaves the class confused after every lecture. Lecture is spent on 1, maybe 2 word problems. Never grades. Over halfway thru the term and not a single grade in besides what Pearson auto-grades. Terrible handwriting. 10-20 minutes of each lecture is him rambling and justifying his teaching methods or decisions.
His handwriting is illegible.
He doesn't upload grades for anything until the last day it is due on purpose so people don't drop his class which really sucks. I've been stressed and anxious the whole semester because I have no idea what my grade is.
This is the worst professor you will ever take in the world. His lectures are long and all over the place. He hasn't graded a single assignment or test and we are over halfway through the term. He keeps making excuses like he was sick or busy. He never actually grades, which is a coward's move just so people don't drop.
I will never take class with this professor ever. He will not grate your assignments till almost your second midterm exam and you will end up to withdrew with W because of his laziness. He will lye through out the semester that he will grade your assignments this weekend and he will never do it. He is teaching very complicated and confusing.
The most delusional professor u will ever see. Terrible handwriting, confusing lectures, thinks he invented physics. Looking here at year after year of bad reviews, baffles me how he still has a job.
Average on exams less than 50(no curve), can not self study through books/videos as exams are based on his lectures. He does not know how to teach and his lectures are way too long with barely any practice questions. He starts talking about irrelevant stuff during class. Don't waste your time with him. Don't know how he still isn't fired.
BEWARE: if you care about your gpa at all, PLEASE don't take this professor.
Professor Desmedt is a true gem with profound knowledge and great passion for teaching. Why we feel his lecture is heavy because he not only tells the formula but also the background info. If you listen and participate, it's easy to follow as it's very logical. He posts practice exam before midterms. Office hours are important for the assignment.
You need to put in a LOT of effort to do well in his class. 60% of my class dropped by the second midterm. His tests aren't hard but the students (including me) just aren't smart. If you wish to get a very deep and philosophical understanding of physics, I would highly recommend this professor. For the rest of the casual folk, not so much.
Echo the below review. He expects a LOT out of you (almost like taking two classes in one), but if you put the effort in you will have a deep understanding of the subject. Thing is most CC students are not that well prepared, so the class is way too hard for most. Luc can be rude but he really does want you to learn from what I've experienced.
19 out of 28 people dropped by the W deadline. That will speak for itself. Not an unpleasant teacher by any stretch of the imagination - just have never taken an "intro" class this ridiculously hard before.
Man. Lectures are so long. Prof is so well versed in this subject. He takes a long time explaining a couple of word problems. Almost half of the class dropped before the W deadline. Personally, I would not take this prof if I were a newcomer, he does not use the textbook and his writing can improve. Great person, okay teacher. Grades take too long.
Prof. Desmedt's tests are difficult and based off his own assignments and lectures, not online homework. Lectures are deep and informative, but can go on confusing/unhelpful tangents. However, he's very helpful in office hours in clarifying concepts. Doesn't grade everything and class pacing/grading is very slow. Mandates masks. You will survive!
Professor D clearly wants his students to succeed however there were multiple instances when lectures would become very long, unrelated tangents. In person tests are lighted based off homework and heavily based off in class problems. I managed to get an A by showing improvement in my scores. Focus most attention on practice problems when studying.
He seems to think that going in depth on a few topics is better than actually covering everything you need and he loses time on tangents. It's ok to make students work hard, but the class should at least be worth it...
His handwriting is so bad. He spent almost the whole class explaining one simple kinematic problem. The problem was straightforward but he made it 10x harder and won't stop explaining how the formulas come from where we don't actually even need to use them in the actual problems. I would recommend Misra over him even tho Misra's tests are harder.
He gives out practice problems before the exam because the questions are tough on the exam. The exam has some of these practice problems which is absolutely hard. He then continues to give us the "answer keys" to this practice problem but those "answer keys" aren't even useful because his handwriting is so messy and he skips steps and gets confusin
FIRE THIS GUY OHLONE, HE IS RUINING THE CAREERS OF SO MANY FUTURE ENGINEERS
DONT TAKE HIM I THOUGHT I WAS TAKING PHYSICS 140 BUT IT WAS PHILOSOPHY OF PHYSICS. BAD AT TEACHING AND THINKS HE INVENTED PHYSICS. DONT WASTE UR TIME HERE TRUST ME
THIS DUDE SERIOUSLY WAITED TILL THE LAST DAY TO GRADE STUFF, ended up curving since everyone was failing. He mentioned Rate My Prof, but I disagree he's awful, and I know from exp. Seriously, DON'T BOTHER HERE, NOT GOOD FOR YOUR MENTAL AND STRESS. BETTER TAKE OTHER THAN HIM.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! If all the other sections are full, just wait for the next semester. THIS CLASS WAS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS! He grades incredibly harshly, and doesn't give partial credit on test answers for correct steps or formulas. He believes mistakes on tests were done on purpose as 'an insult to physics'.
Bad at teaching. Wastes so much time during lectures. Awful grading policy and tests. Requires you learn the material mostly on your own. Overall, very difficult even just to pass. Not because of physics but because of the professor
He is actually really smart and has clear and understandable expectations but he goes on too many unnecessary tangents on what not to do which honestly is a little frustrating. I wish he would spend more time explaining the base definitions(only briefly) of EVERYTHING instead of explaining through one or two questions he spends the whole lecture on
He definitely wants students to succeed and is super knowledgeable about physics. However, his teaching is terrible, he struggles to teach in an understandable way and every lecture would become a long unrelated tangent, but he is really willing to help outside of class. Tests are hard but doable, you will pass if you focus on his lecture problems.
His class is very lecture heavy, you will not pass tests if you do not attend lectures. He hints towards what kind of questions will be on his tests but does not provide practice tests. He has online office hours on weekends and stays back after class for questions. A lot of homework and lab assignments were not graded towards the end of the sem.
This professor took pride in NOT teaching us kinematics!! It's a MECHANICAL physics class and we went the entire semester avoiding using kinematic formulas bc he didn't like how students mesmerized the formulas. In other words, he would often take the longest possible route to solve problems when they could be done in a fraction of the time.
Terrible professor, can't read anything he reads on the board, never grades anything, makes everything a thousand times more complicated than it has to be.
If you have a love for physics, take this professor and you will have the time of your life. Otherwise, I would try to take another professor.
This professor has a unique teaching style that can be challenging to navigate. While the lectures can be tangential, he is knowledgeable and willing to help outside of class. To succeed, focus on his lecture examples and consider using unstuck ai alongside the textbook for study prep.
don't be scared! prof desmedt is awesome, and it's just very important to be present because there's no other way for you to learn the material otherwise! he doesn't believe in having students self-learn material because there could be gaps in our learning, so he teaches everything himself! so be present and really, just talk to him :)
Wants you to do things his specific way on exams or else no credit. Wouldnt be big problem but he assigns barely any hw and when he does he doesnt grade it until end of smstr. Lectures: loses everyone with rambling about wrong techniques and how "bad" his students are, makin lectures useless too. Such a bad prof that he has me asking for more hw
his handwriting is so bad making lectures really hard to follow; he spends so much time talking about very simple things. if you took hs physics, you would recognize all topics, but he makes them hard. no chance of self teaching bc no hw; Belittles people who answer questions wrong; by end of smstr, nobody answers. Dont take, egotist & bad prof
if you don't know how to take sarcasm, you would think he's belittling you-- but he has a sense of humor and teaches class in a very engaging way (sometimes he physically acts out scenarios which is pretty funny) :) pokes fun at the students that interact with him regularly, as long as you ask questions and he sees effort, he'll perform miracles
Worst professor I think I have ever taken. Not only is it impossible to make out his hand writting, he has no cadence or flow to his lecture or his class. He didnt have a proper syllabus until months into the class. He actively gets upset if you dare to ask a question in class! I could keep going, but to keep it short. Dont take this professor.
NEVER take him. better to go to santa barbara city college for online physics. this guy is insane. someone in my class got every question right on the test but lost 75% (had a 25% on a MIDTERM) because he didnt do it the professors way. Thinks he has the right to reinvent physics, very demeaning when asked questions, and gives you horrible grades.
Many things wrong with this professor, so please don't take him. He posted his syllabus weeks into his class and didn't even follow it. The semester ended two days ago and he has yet to grade ANYTHING except one midterm. He posted a lab report AFTER THE FINAL for a lab we did two months ago. His handwriting is genuinely awful so good luck!
Just fire him at this point bro.
Your survival guide: Be active in lecture, he drops hints & asks ?'s similar to test. MEND GAPS IN KNOWLEDGE W/ OFFICE HR & OHLONE TUTORING. Ask former students. DO EVERY PRACTICE PROBLEM. Get fast w/ trig, substitution+elimination in weird setups. From day 1 make practice, tutoring, & office hr ur routine. Be consistent, be prepared, and GL
As someone who received an A in this class, I believe I can speak from an unbiased perspective. He did NOT follow his syllabus. It wasn't posted until a month into the semester, and he changed it AFTER the final, too. His handwriting is horrible, and his grading is arbitrary. He takes long tangents and is 100% the worst professor I've ever taken.
Disorganized course with an unreliable syllabus. Some listed topics are never covered. Lectures add little value. Notes are illegible and sometimes contain errors. Review his practice problems from his lectures and notes for exams and do it his way or lose points. Material is easy he made it hard. Also ratemyprof lives on his mind rent free.
It has to be illegal to be this bad at teaching.
For someone who's lectures mainly comes from self written notes and the whiteboard, his handwritings are illegible. His "answer keys" aren't even correct sometimes. He has awfully unclear grading criteria and did not follow the syllabus at all which wasn't even posted until a month. Please avoid this professor at all cost.
For someone who's heavily reliant on handwritten notes and the whiteboard his handwriting is awful, borderline a different language. Didn't follow the syllabus which wasn't posted until a month into the class. His grading criteria is non-existent except to follow exactly what he does even though his "answer keys" aren't even correct sometimes.
In class, I couldn't understand the professor's notes, they were written in a mess, and you had to pay attention to his lectures all the time, and the physics courses on the Internet were hard to help you because you had to write according to his method. You only know the grade after the final exam, and the grading is very slow.
Luc Desmedt is a egotistical physics professor who compares his lectures to the physics textbooks at Yale. His writing is hard to read especially at a far and his teaching methods aren't good. He assigns multiple homework lessons throughout the course but doesn't grade any of them. His grading rubric is outrageous and a scam. Don't take this class.
HE IS SUCH AN AMAZING PROFESSOR. I LOVE HIS LECTURES, through his lectures you can feel the passion in his voice. Very deep caring professor and he rounded my grades up 3 percent to make it over to A. Such a generous kind professor. Do not listen to other ratings but mine. I assure you that he is the best professor you'll find. Btw I'm not Desmedt.
I'd like to start off by saying that i really liked Desdmedt's character. I can even say his lectures were fascinating to listen to and learn from, however there are better professors. He's heavy on the midterm and final, determines almost your entire grade. It'd be nice if he gave small weekly conceptual quizzes to see what students are retaining.
He overcomplicates his lectures, and goes on tangents that have very little value. He needs to Improve his Handwriting, and write slower, as it's illegible. He needs to label his notes more clearly as the board gets so cluttered, you don't know what he's writing about, and he needs to label the example questions.
I'd rather take another full year with a better professor than step foot in his lectures. If you love being lost and taking meaningless notes without comprehension this is the professor for you. Handwriting is atrocious. he jumps randomly between concepts. I couldn't even do my own research because I had no clue what concepts we were even covering.
Handwriting looks like another language. DO NOT TAKE HIM if you care about your sanity. Overcomplicates the simplest things. Nice guy but very bad at teaching he even compares himself to yale level teaching and comprehension. it's just insane i wouldn't take his class under any circumstances
Pace of class is agonizingly slow. Spent half of sem on kinematics and sped through the rest. Impulse-momentum was 2 lectures total before the final. Did not get to torque/angular momentum or oscillations. He also doesn't post grades till end of sem. Advice: exam questions are copied from canvas practice so do them.
(1 year ago so may be outdated) I think his 1/5 negative reviews are a bit of an overreaction, just because hes not an easy A. that being said, hes not the greatest and his class was very test heavy. But, he was more than willing to help students who asked questions. He is passionate about physics and i wish i attended more office hours.
Homework in the textbook and the online portion of exams are basically irrelevant to what was actually taught in class and what appears on the midterms. Only the in-class exams truly matter for the overall grade. Must do problems his way, if you do a problem a different way he will not give you full credit and still mark it down even if its correct
