The course itself is really great. You'll actually learn some useful things in a lab course for once. Poitras is super helpful if you go to his office and even if he drops by your lab section. He gives great feedback on lab books and formal reports. However, try to get a good TA; they will make or break your experience with BCH3356.
Great prof. Though english is not his first language, he communicates the material well. Fair exams questions and tells you what to expect. Very helpful too.
Great lab. All of the assignments had questions about things to be talked about in the formal lab. So if you do your assignments, you have essentially completed 80% of your formal lab. This lab has a lot of down time and if your TA is on top of things, you usually get out 2-3 hours early.
Great professor and great course. He designed the course so that we actually learn things that are relevant to research for once. The labs were fair and so are the marking. A nice guy too who's willing to help if you have any questions.
Straightforward chill prof. Just memorize and understand the material and you should be fine. He doesn't give tricky questions.
Probably one of the best professors so far in my university experience. He gives great feedback and is extremely approachable. If you go to his office he will go above and beyond to help you. The only downside to the lab is if you're unlucky and don't get a good TA
You don't interact with him much for this course, but he makes the midterms and final exams. He seems like a nice guy if you are talking to him one on one, but he makes one hell of a final exam. The very last question involves material you've seen before, but it is very difficult. If you want a high grade, you should go with the other prof.
Pretty funny. All about the big picture. Focus on understand not memorizing all the small details and you'll be golden.
HILARIOUS during lectures!! Dr. Poitras is very straightforward when it comes to midterms and finals; everything you need to know is on his slides. If you put in the work , you'll get the mark you deserve. His office is open almost everyday of the week and he's always willing to help.
Taught the second half of BIO3170 in fall 2015. In class, it s really confusing, you have to go to him for clarity. He will help you. It was hard to think of the types of questions on the final, uses specific examples in class on final. Did not use Even-skipped this year tho (LOL). Bless.
BIO3170: Notes are pretty clear, everything is there but there a lot to study for. Despite what he says, study everything including examples. Otherwise fair exam. BPS3356: Manual was confusing sometimes, marking scheme for some assignments were ridiculous, and exams were marked for the smallest details. Try to do well on the labs for a good mark.
Luc's midterm was pretty straightforward, but his final exam was deadly. The labs weren't too bad, but they were really picky about what they saw in the reports and assignments. Your experience in the course is pretty much based on how chill your TA is and how hard of a marker the TA is who is correcting your assignments/lab reports.
really super hard final. no thx
The midterm is fair but the final is horrendous. Good thing we are graded by a variety of things such as small presentations, lab book keeping, etc. the labs themselves are phenomenal! Not so in love with the theoretical aspect of this class though.
Lab component was tough, make sure you get a good partner. However, there was only 4 major labs, weekly assignments and a tiny practical midterm. The final was horrible, worst exam I've ever written and I studied a lot. However, Luc gave a generous amount of free percent to the final grade, which helped a lot. Not any easy course by any means.
I didn't find the prof to be very available at all for questions but the class is very good. I really enjoyed this class and definitely learnt a lot! Grading is tough, but somehow I miraculously pulled off an A-.....
Not a good class/lab. No teaching at all from professor. Work load +++, very tough on exams and goes outside what was covered in labs. Very limited help whe you go for office hours. Grading is vary hard because he wants his grade (mean) to be at a certain level with less than 5% of students above 90%.
Very hard class, not very helpful during office hours, difficult to understand during lectures, goes through too much material too fast all the time
Extremely fair with is exams! pretty straightforward and easy to do well if you study his notes and understand the concepts (don't just memorize). The course seemed to get easier after the first midterm (my opinion). He was good for the first time teaching this course; definitely recommend him for metabolism
His exams are very fair. Everything you need are in his lecture notes. Metabolism is a very dry subject, but he tries to apply it to certain diseases and how the human body works to make it more interesting. When studying for his exams, try to look at the bigger picture and understand why each step is needed instead of memorizing.
Complete 180 from mol bio where I wasn't his biggest fan. Like what others said- his exams are extremely fair. Honestly, probably the fairest exams I've written in any of my classes and for this alone, you can probably guarantee yourself at least an A- if you study straight from the slides. 2 midterms + final and the final wasn't even cumulative.
Metabolism is generally ALOT of memorization so get ready to freshen up on glycolysis & TCA. He makes the material very interesting . He tells you EXACTLY what you need to memorize and what you DONT need to know. Midterms (25% each) : MCQ+Fill in the __+ SA. PROTIP-Start memorizing early! Not too many application q. Focus on his slides. I got an A+
worst prof i have ever had. not approchable at all
Luc was a great prof! He sometimes lost his train of thought, but overall, he explained the material very well. Study well in advance for the midterms/final because there is a lot of material. Very few application questions (mostly memorization) and he doesn't make you memorize structures! Would take again!
Worst lab and worst professor I've had in my 3 years at UOttawa. Everyone around me and I have been getting 5/10 on the assignments. Extremely difficult when it shouldn't be.
The worst lab course I have taken so far. Even the TAs were confused by the instructions in the manual. Marks are not updated throughout the semester so there is no way of knowing how you are doing until 2 weeks before the exam (took 3 weeks to mark to practical exam). Marking schemes were very specific on assignments and labs.
Very difficult lab.
Labs are pretty simple, but the assignments/reports are difficult. Questions are not really from the manual, so you'll need to go to the DGD to get them explained. No answer keys are posted either. The 2 formal lab reports are graded using a very specific marking scheme, and the final exam was tough. DGDs did help though, especially for exam review
The lab material is relevant to outside lab work, but the manual is pretty poorly worded and confusing (even the TAs are confused too). Assignments are horrible - you lose marks on things the question never asked for, and if your TA is harsh the presentations drop your grade. I don't even know my grade in the class since he never uploads marks...
I hated taking this lab but its not as terrible as people are making it seem. DGDs helped a lot with assignments and understanding the lab material. Labs were easy to do. Assignments and lab reports were so difficult to get good marks on. The final exam was really just assignment questions so it wasnt hard at all. You have to understand !!
Some say, his first words were "bell curve".
You're given a task--teach hundreds of incredibly smart & motivated students paying thousands to hear you talk. And yet, he has designed this course for purely memorizing hundreds of unimportant substrates/enzymes/products--5% of which you'll never need to remember in the workplace.
awful prof, hard to understand, course designed purely off of memorization, hard to figure out what should be memorized and what shouldn't, HORRIBLE prof
Lots of memorization and understanding how different pathways interact with each other. The material isn't too difficult, everything you need to know is on the slides. Study early as there is a ton to remember. Exams are fair, questions are taken right from slide content. He also sometimes give hints about potential test questions. He also curves.
Really tough marking scheme on long answers. Very easy to do decent in this course, but I felt as if it was super hard to do amazing (A+). Tons of material and some odd questions, but I enjoyed him as a lecturer.
Very interesting class. There are quite a lot of molecule names and reactions to memorize but it's not as bad as the people below me make it. Luc has extremely fair exams and he teaches you everything you need to do well. Give yourself a lot of time to study tho. Read the notes then watch the podcasts. Afterwards DRAW all the pathways.
The lab manual is filled with spelling errors and mistakes. He hasn't changed it in years and still sends out emails last minute to correct what it says. Doesn't post grades till the day before exams. Assignment questions are vague and you and up losing points for stuff not specified in the manual. Leaves midway through his office hours.
I'm very mixed at Luc. Honestly, he makes metabolism pretty decent and his tests are fair. My main problem is 1) He is so bad at explaining pathways, he contradicts himself and misses key info, and 2) He has a bad attitude and gets offended when students have concerns. I have a feeling he makes easy tests to stop us from pestering him
Although the negative comments I've heard from Poitras, I've had an great experience. I attended his office hours for questions and feedback, he was very kind, respectful and extremely helpful. You must be very respectful for him to give you the time of day which makes absolute sens. Don't ask him straight up to change your grade, & homework heavy.
GUESS what ? ! ? . . . . . . . . . . I don't have to take this course again :D
How do you ignore prof Najwa Haddad every week when she says to you "Hi have an amazing day"!? He's not nice when you go to his office hours, so email or ask question during class. You have to study WELL in advance to get an A in this class. Class averages were always 55-60. I memorized EVERYTHING and still did bad so I have no tips.
Rude, unapproachable, and condescending. Not caring when you go to office hours. Brushes away your concerns, and takes forever when explaining basic things.
I love (like love) biochemistry and I hated this class from start to finish. My only suggestion would be to take a very light semester because you're going to have to spend so much time memorizing pathways that you will be able to google 100% of the time later in life. My favourite part of the course was when I walked out of the final!
Difficult class with a decent lecturer. You will have to self teach a lot but he is very helpful in office hours. No practice questions (major issue) and a lot of connection questions on exams. Memorize everything and make sure to learn how all the concepts relate as well.
If the course is not mandatory, avoid it.
Not very nice in his office hours. I always feel like he is rushing me and dont want to help. I was even more confused when I left his office and I really think what my TA told me was more accurate
An extremely hard lab
i had him for his lab and he's so rude! he makes people wait in line for 50 minutes during his super short 1 hour office hours while answering someones questions, he's condescending and unfair. the lab was fun and easy material but i hated having to talk to him for anything
Does not post marks until the very end, which means you have no idea how you are doing in the class. Marks are kept secretive until the exam, and it's not good that the mark you see gives you a heart attack before the exam.
DO NOT take this course unless youre forced to. The most homework-heavy course Ive ever taken. Practical exam was really hard, not looking forward to the final at all. TA doesnt know what hes doing, labs are always delayed, it was a nightmare. 6 hours a week and I only get 1 course worth of credits. Avoid this class at all costs!
THIS COURSE IS TIME CONSUMING!!!!! weekly 6 hour labs, weekly assignments, weekly pre-lab, in-lab presentations, a practical exam, weekly draft reports, a formal lab, and a final exam all for 3 credits only. Poitras is the most degrading prof I've ever met, uses more energy to find ways to dock marks and is never helpful in his office hours.
The class is a lot and very time consuming, BUT you'll get good grades if you're competent since most of the stuff evaluated is pretty easy. Luc can't write a comprehensive manual, which is very frustrating. Tutorial docs to help with homework and reports were very detailed though. I found the midterm fair if you did all the homework properly.
don't take this class unless you have to also note that it's also given by another prof in winter. The class was too time consuming 6 weekly hour labs Weekly homework and prelabs 5 reports In-lab presentation every other week Midterm+final. Luc is not nice, doesn't answer emails, rude during office hours doesn't take enough time to explain stuff.
Lab rarely took 6 hrs. ALWAYS read the manual before you go to the lab and doing the assignments, long but itll save your grade. Reports and presentations are easy. The final was brutal. Asks about specific details in the background section of the lab manual. Really know those sections! There are a lot of opportunities to get points. He curves.
So time consuming. Multiple lab reports, big final paper, prelabs, presentations, assignments, and lab prep. You need to know how to manage your time for this class. Manual is long and tedious but it's helpful for studying. Final exam was brutal, heard he curves tho. Final has specific tiny details taken from background sections of manual. Awful.
He is a very nice guy and I respect him for being non-lenient towards cheating and plagiarism. However, it felt that some concepts on assignments and exams came out of nowhere. You can do well if you work hard, but get ready for lots of work and some luck to have good TA markers.
The lab was horrible with regards to assignments, presentation, lab report, other markings. Every percents was dedicated to something and you loose marks on everything. But the final was surprising easier than everything else in the lab. Luc did pull through in the end giving us a boost. It was quite an experience.
Good course and good prof, the final was actually fun to do
This was by far the most demanding and tiring class I have ever taken. Do not take this lab as a science elective. If you have to take it with your program make sure it's a light semester for you.
Without doubt one of the worst profs i have had during my undergraduate program. He blames the problems on course and claims metabolism is hard. He basically reads off the slides, does not explain anything so going to lectures does not make any differences. The exams are not hard necessarily but the grading is abysmal
Lab portion is online due to covid. He is very condescending via e-mail. Rude and not helpful to students who are trying to navigate labs online...
He's the worst prof I've encountered in all of uni. He claims things are "easy" so doesn't explain them. Gives the absolute worst instructions and everything is so unnecessarily confusing. The assignments and reports are time consuming and unclear. He's incredibly rude and demeaning. If optional, don't take him. I'm an A+ student and not doing well
Second time taking his course. Had to drop previously due to time constraints on a previous semester. His course was difficult but was very well designed to prime you with abilities you'll *absolutely* need if you intend on graduate school. Be prepared to work hard and start piecing things together.
If I could give him 0/5 I would. He is the worst prof I've ever had at uOttawa. He is so disrespectful, arrogant and unorganized (lab manuals were outdated which confused many students). A strike ended up happening during the semester(which was not his fault) but how he took care of things after was clearly a problem. Avoid if you can at all cost.
Haven't received the final yet, so this is a bit premature, but I thought he was fine. His fishing trip is the stuff of legends. His emails are a bit too short. But overall, go to the lectures and freshen up on the material throughout the course and you'll be fine. "Have a good day"
If I had a cent for everytime he said "Have a good day" in his emails, I would be a millionaire.
If you have a choice, which I really hope you do, please avoid him. He is very rude towards students when they ask for help via email and he avoids answering questions, instead wants you to search on your own. Even though there was professors' union strike which unfairly impacted students, he was not considerate at all about midterms and exams.
I should't took him as a teacher. He is rude, he made his final difficult, very long especially towards the end. When you go to his office hours or chat via email, he is rude , he doesn't like to change marks if there is a mistake during correction... it was a very big mistake to be in his class. the material was okay but he is very strict
Such an unprofessional professor. He is very rude to his students. Unhelpful during office hours. Refuses to regrade assignments when points were taken off unfairly. Instead, he insists that he is busy dedicating his time to answer students questions. I am still waiting for a reply for an email sent out 1 week ago. Doesnt care about his students.
Honestly, pay very good attention to the lectures. almost everything is now application based because its online and Luc is not a nice man. he says things in the beginning of the course that might make you think he is but he comes off as passive aggressive sometimes as if he's being forced to teach. rude and many times doesn't answer your questions
Avoid Luc at all costs. Worst prof in my undergrad. Lab was cool but not him. Very passive aggressive and rude toward students. No email etiquette even though he preaches it. Lots of tedious assignments and reports. Never went to his lectures but I was better off. Exam was theory + app. Jai absolument aucune idée de comment il a obtenu ce poste !
Very rude and very unclear of what is expected in the course. His lectures are unappealing and all over the place. He seems to not care about his students, the class itself is not bad however I'd appreciate a more understanding professor.
Avoid taking this course if you can. So many things to worry about (assignments, draft reports, performance, etc.) it gets exhausting real fast. Luc was condescending, passive aggressive toward lots of students including me with his emails and announcements. There were many times I was fed up with his attitude and how he deals with things. AVOID!!
Honestly, not as bad as people are saying. Show up to lab prepared (read the lab procedures). Watch the lecture before lab if you can, but you won't fail w/o it. For the exams, rewatch the lectures and when he says "I do this question every year" trust him and review the question. His email communication is not great. Rarely remarks.
I thought his labs were really well organized. If you're ready for the labs and know what you're doing, they always go well. If you understood what you did during the semester, the exam isn't difficult. He also bellcurved everyone's final grades due to the low average on the final.
Im so sorry but he is the worst professor I have ever met in my life. He does not care about his students, he makes everything harder than it needs to be and with everything being online now he became worse. His courses have no direction because he does not give learning objectives or practice problems, nothing no help whatsoever.
After 4 years, Luc is easily the worst prof I've had. So rude in emails and takes WEEKS to respond if you're lucky. Makes exams way too long, speeds through 70 slide lectures and spends 10 minutes wasting class time talking about nonsense but blames his students asking questions as the reason to why he's so behind. His midterm average was below 50%
lectures are good their interesting and hes good at explaining the content but evaluations are something else... if you wanna do well avoid taking the class with him
Dr. Poitras is a good prof for metabolism. It is quite unfair to blame him for how much material is in this class. From PTSD from BCH2333, I took this course very seriously. I typed out everything of what he said in class (made a doc over 350 pages) and made my own cheating sheet and got A+ on both midterms. Very time consuming but doable.
Like a lot of my student colleagues mentioned, there is no email etiquette, no learning objectives, and vague exams. The material is not difficult, but with no learning objectives, you're left trying to figure out what he may or not ask as there is a lot of information. I find reading the intros in the textbook helped. All in all, good luck.
I am an A+ student so the prof's don't really affect me but he is the worst professor I've ever had. Never responds to emails (I had a question asked 3 days before the exam he never responded and asked the SAME question in the exam). Seems like he wants students to get confused and fail. But he does curving to help. Don't take if you don't have to.
studied like hell and still couldn't shake a grade above an 80. the content is actually interesting in certain parts and i found he explained reasonably well, but when it came to the tests, i left them feeling good but ended up doing much worse than i thought. his lectures go around in circles a lot and aren't the most concise, lots of typos too
Content was VERY interesting and slideshows were pretty organized! His explanations were sometimes disorganized. Exams were mostly application, and very hard; rubrics were SO specific (must hit key words!) but questions were vague. If you missed something last class, make sure you review and understand it 100% or else you'll be lost next class
Where do I even start with him. Firstly, he's NOT an educator, I think he should stick to what he's OK at, lab work. He shouldn't be near students, content is interesting but SO disorganized, assignments are heavy, grading is tough and worst of all, he thinks he's a good prof LOL. So rude in his emails. U thought U ate? gimme that plate. AVOID!!!!
Id rather restart my entire undergraduate degree than have to ever take another course with this joke of a professor. The most unprofessional professor I have ever met, extremely rude in his emails. Avoid at all costs
This course is interesting but VERY unorganized and some of the assignments are unclear. Luc Poitras is extremely rude despite preaching about proper email etiquette. I would rather eat an entire OC transpo bus tire than have him as a prof. ever again. If you ever happen to be stuck w Luc, please make sure you have easy courses that same semester.
prob the worst prof i've taken. very disorganized and extremely unclear grading criteria. the hw instructions are very unclear so i recommend attending lectures. the final exam is really difficult so maybe rewatch all the lectures to be prepared. lab manuel and protocols are extremely difficult to follow and poorly written. do better, luc.
He is condescending. The labs are fun and easy to do. However, the homework and partial labs seem easy at first sight but the TAs do not mess around. Even though I got an A+ in this class, it was filled with frustration and a feeling of being powerless. If you want to go to office hours to understand more, it will simply be a waste of your time.
Great teacher loved the course
Hes a really tough grader, i took metabolism with him, he already knows its heavy on material yet he still chose to give us the most unsolvable exam questions that take much more time to solve than what has been designated, Final was 3 hours long, requires at least 4.evaluation was kind of vague, depending on class average he might boost few marks
The professor was really useless and disrespectful with me. The way he emails is disrespecting the students. I also got an impression that he is racisct or what because his behaviour towards me was really disrespectful. It seemed like he was shouting on his emails. He gave me zero for the reports and claimed that i plagiarized the report.
He said that asking query is wasting his time. He was really awful.
Awful
Disrespectful
The professor was not at all good. He has no sense of talking.
He is not the right professor to be in this course
I would rather take another course instead of taking Dr. Luc as my prof. again. He was really rude in his emails. He seemed that I wasted his time. I think my time is more precious than his. He should really be more polite with students
The lab itself was manageable but you are MAINLY interacting with TAs not Dr. Poitras. Lots of components to the grade: weekly readings + assignments, lab notebook, lab quizzes (participation), draft reports, final report, practical exam, and final exam. It is a pretty heavy course in-terms of workload. Final was difficult but doable with studying.
I think this prof gets a bad name because the class is so hard. I think any prof that would teach this class would get bad ratings because it is without a doubt the most content heavy class I have ever taken. You need to be dedicated to this class but he isn't a bad prof he honestly wants students to get the best marks its just a super hard class
This course is a very heavy content course. I do not think he is a bad prof, but I wish he would have just told us exactly what we need to memorize for midterms because you just end up with a whole lot of information and not enough time to memorize, leading to memorizing things werent on the test, while not having time to memorize what was.
He himself is a great prof! His classes were interesting. His exams were relatively difficult, however, it is not because he did not teach the material The material is all application based but the course is content-heavy. He curves a lot and admits to doing so, as his averages are typically low and he can't have a class average to high or low.
Content heavy and application based so there is a lot of things to study. Pay attention to what the prof says in class because sometimes they will show up on midterms/exams. If you want to do well, study weeks in advance and make sure you understand the content well as memorization is not enough, draw a pathway map for studying.
When I took this class, I saw Luc 1 time throughout the entire fall semester in 2022 so I can't really comment on him. The TA's were amazing and made the labs so much more bearable, without my partner and my TA, I would've hated this course. The lab hours were really long and could be really confusing sometimes.
Honestly the evaluations were somewhat plentiful but very easy if you pay attention. He doesn't try to trick you with anything and your hand is held throughout the entire lab by your TA. The report writing assignments were good practice if you plan on going into research and he has some really decent advice in his manual.
2nd-toughest biochem course in undergrad. He admits that no profs - including him at first - wanted to teach this course. Ppts are very long & impossible to follow in class since he has to go so fast. Study tips: make colourful diagrams for more efficient memorization (don't just copy his, add detail) & his tests are heavy on applications.
This prof is the worst. He doesn't care about students at all, I truly believe it makes him happy to give bad grades. The workload is insane and the assignments, reports and practical exam are worth practically nothing each because there's a 35% final written exam. The final exam is so Luc can happily destroy your grade right before the holidays.
Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but Luc is actually my boy. He's a no BS kinda guy which I appreciate; sucking up to him will get you nowhere. He will not help you if you don't first try to understand it yourself. It's a class that forces you to truly learn fundamental lab techniques, and he runs it accordingly. This was acc one of my fav classes.
He was awesome !!
I have never put so much work into the lab component of a course and seen such terrible results. This professor gathers his TAs before each lab session and tells them to be mean and unhelpful towards students. He clowns you if you ask him questions. Prepare to spend 30 hours on each report. Retire soon buddy for everybody's sake.
No comment!! Get ready to be insane
Considering how hard this course is, and how boring the content is, I think Luc does a great job. It is very content heavy and requires a lot of studying. He curves well and gives good feedback. Don't skip the midterms - he doesn't curve the final. Overall, hard course but he does his best to make it understandable.
Metabolism itself is a hard subject, so you have to realize that any prof that teaches it is gonna get bad reviews. Luc is straight up - he hints at questions during his lectures and they're also really interesting. His midterms and final were extremely fair, plus he's super kind during office hours. Great course as long as you put in the effort.
He is a great lecturer, accessible outside of class and is great at answering questions. His exams are really fair and there are no surprises. This is a really difficult class, but if you go to lectures and work hard it is possible to do well! He cares about students who put in effort, so try not to skip his midterms!
Luc rewards hustlers by boosting grades in the midterms so that people who feel like skipping them and just writing the final can't get away with it scot-free. That makes him a controversial figure, but if you're in your 3rd+ year of university and are too lazy to study and write a midterm, u gotta be fr. Also dad jokes and good lectures.
His homework takes a lot of your time because small overlooked details can cost you points. Make sure to always check the grading rubric because you'll find some information there that you need to include which aren't mentioned in the homework instructions. At least he's very exhaustive in his information (in DGDs and lab manuals) which helps you.
Brutal prof, extreme amounts of work and you don't even learn much. Outside of class he's rude, unkind and unwilling to help. TAs are usually nice though but thats about it. GL if u have him lol
Great lecturer but the content is super hard so he adds marks to exams so that's nice thank you poitras for letting me pass ily
Nice lecture very interesting material, but heavy
He's a great lecturer and hints at exam questions, so attend class. The material is dense with over 60 slides per lecture. Exams are tough but fair, focusing on concept application and pathway connections. Don't procrastinate. Memorize basic reactions first to ease understanding regulation and connections. Study regularly and you'll be fine.
This can either be an easy class or the hardest class you've ever taken - I slacked off and almost failed the first midterm but got A+ on the second. He's a great prof IF you start studying very early and make sure you understand concepts, don't just memorize them. He gives free extra marks but not always enough to make up for not studying!
He is a great lecturer who wants his students to succeed. The course content itself was very heavy, but he tried to convey it in an easy-to-understand way. As long as you don't procrastinate/leave everything to the end you'll be fine. He also curves exam grades. Easy to reach outside the class, and provide useful feedback. He is a gem.
Tough class, good professor
He is good at explaining and you learn a lot in his class. His assignments can be quite unclear but his office hours help. Like most lab coordinators he is not very flexible (that's to be expected) and he can be condescending at times. My biggest nitpick is him stretching a DGD that could easily be 30 min into 1h20.
Honestly great prof, I feel like he is a true academic - he acc wants to ensure the education of the next generation of scientists. The class is everything- heavy, but you learn how to conduct a molecular biology research project start to finish, and write the paper for it too. Gotta work for the grade though.
Professor Poitras is a great lecturer who makes the dense content more digestible. Attend class and work hard - he rewards effort with extra marks. unstuck AI was super helpful for concept practice.
Expects A LOT from his students with weekly assignments, draft reports, the final report & weekly labs. But this does give you the chance to get marks in different areas to boost your grade. For the final, review his DGDs, assignments & reread the lab manual MANY times. He doesn't try to trick you with hard questions but the final was very long.
It's a hard class. You just need to keep up if you wanna do well. Watch youtube videos!

Humain pas terrible, prof passable.
Some of the comments on here are too harsh. Prof. Poitras is very kind and is able to convey the lecture material well during lectures. Are you going to find this class easy? No, but it's a hard class and the amount of content to know is astronomical. That's not his fault. His exams are a bit tough, but he curves grades because he knows this.
Despite his comments, he is a wonderful professor! He goes into depth in every lecture about each topic and makes everything make sense. There is A LOT of content and it is tough so you have to study well, but his midterms are extremely fair and he curves them. Final is also very fair but there is no curve
first off this is a hard class, it is a TON of material. but the prof does a decent job at explaining the concepts. focus on the concepts he emphasized and where different lectures overlap (where different cycles have common intermediates, etc) requires a lot of work but is doable if you prepare and dont procrastinate!!!
He was amazing and curves all his midterm. People that are saying he is awful and hard must not try. His midterms and final is easy compared to the content taught in lecture material.
Best slides at uOttawa, hands down. This class is HARD. But, the grade you get is directly proportional to the work you put in. Gives lots of hints about exams in class. Records lectures, gives bonus points both through bonus questions and curves. I don't see how people can rate him badly.
He is a really honest and great professor. I went into this class based on these rmp reviews expecting it to be tricky but he is not. The questions on the exam are all stuff he repeats alot or talks about in class. This class does need alot of studing and memorization but nothing more than first year anatomy and physiology classes at Uottawa.
Metabolism is a tough class all around, but Luc does his best to teach it in an understandable manner. Start drawing out the metabolic pathways as soon as you can, this is not the kind of class you can start studying for the night before a midterm. He repeats a lot of the main points (which show up on the midterms and final), so take good notes.
Live long and prosper (Leonard Nimoy)
This prof has been my most organized lab coordinator so far. There's homework like assignments, quizzes (bonus points!), reports, and notebook entries. He's really helpful during his office hours (go in person), and his final was really fair, so if you actually do the assignments you'll be fine. For a 3rd-year BCH class, it was really manageable.
Very fair professor. The final was reasonable and matched what was taught during the DGDs. He's extremely organized, respectful, and genuinely takes time to help during office hours. If you listen in DGD and actually do the assignments yourself (don't rely on ChatGPT), you'll be completely fine for the final. Great Prof overall.
The exam insane and worth so much that all the effort you put in every single week for the lab means very little. The lab itself is actually interesting if it wasnt for the final it wouldve been a good class.
