Taught second half of BIS002A I thought he did a pretty good job making the class interesting, his tests are between moderate and hard, still test questions poorly worded, read textbook as supplement, overall a pretty good professor
Harder than Britt. Questions on exams are all concept based and he doesn't seem to teach concepts very well except read off the slides and expect you to know everything.
He is an interesting person and cracks jokes every now and then, but his lectures are messy and don't really help on the test. And reading the book doesn't really help much either. All of his tests are multiple choice, but the questions are situational, vague, or confusing. Learn the material, and then learn how to APPLY it.
Mr. Comai is a funny guy. Lectures are interesting, but the midterms are very hard. Even if you do the study questions, go to lecture, and read the book.... it's still does not help prepare for midterm unless you have some background in bio. Don't take this teacher unless you are proficient in biology (NO CURVE!)
WORST. PROFESSOR. EVER.
Should be teaching upper division bio only. Seems like a neat guy but I cannot seem to pass his tests, no matter how much I study. I never understand his lectures and he is too arrogant to go by the text book. I just might fail this.
I agree with the previous comments. He does teach at a very low level but on his exams, he goes into extreme detail that we dont even touch in class. The average is a 67 in the class right now without a curve. Yes there's no curve for the class, so if you're going to take this professor, expect to already have a strong foundation in bio.
He is the worst teacher, his tests are impossible and expects you to have a chem backround. Ive failed all the midterms and the final looks impossible. There is a little curve at the end of the class but not helpful. Id recomend Gerhart over Comai
I normally am really against professor slamming, but... he is just a terrible teacher. Really nice guy though. Just don't expect his lectures to make any sense. His tests are EXTREMELY tough and not at all congruent with his lectures. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
I got a 5 on the AP Bio test and find this class difficult. His tests are much more detailed than what he goes over in lecture. There is a generous what we call a 'curve' but since he goes by the bell curve definition he claims there is not. Going into the final, an 84 is a solid A. Difficult, but doable to get a good grade. Didn't touch the book.
He's a cool professor and a funny guy and all, but his exams are really difficult. It's hard to read his handwriting. A lot of the things he teaches during lecture have nothing to do with the material with the exams. I worked on study questions and attended review sessions but still ended up with bad grades for the exams. =(
He' a really cool guy. Pretty funny during lectures and makes a lot of jokes.. that said his hand writing is pretty bad, well unless you have bad hand writing and your used to it (like me), his test are kind of tricky though, but if you spend some time thinking about them they are really easy. Take him if the other choice for Bis2a is Gerhart!!
Okay his lectures are a bit confusing, but he gives a lot of resources for you to study with like podcasts for every lecture, study questions, lecture notes, and lots of review sessions. After the whole quarter was done with I came out with a B+, and I'm a psychology major who never took Bio AP in high school. If I can get that, you can too.
He has a lot of funny things to say in class, but isn't a very good lecturer on the subject. He rarely makes a whole lot of sense and his study questions don't make sense either. His tests are really hard simply because of the way he words the questions. His TA Wes was extremely helpful throughout the quarter though. Props to him.
Class was fairly easy. Lectures were mandatory and clickers were used to take attendance. Lectures were simple, but a bit unclear. Exams were only MC, and were worded weirdly. Discussions had quizzes ever week. Funny at time in lecture. Overall easy class if you pay attention, skim the book, study. Class was very objective. Recommended over Gerhart
Lecture were very unclear and just rambling. The tests were worded very poorly and were confusing. try not to take this professor
comai was a pretty tricky teacher. he has clicker questions every class which are participation points. there were three midterms and a final. i had 5 point quizzes every week in discussion that were fairly easy, but difficult at times. tests are worded weird. yet, he is better than gerhardt. i heard few complaints from comai and more of gerhardt
Dr. Comai is not very clear and not very helpful in his lectures. Avoid this professor--I learned absolutely nothing!
Dr. Comai is a great guy! and hilarious too! Yes, his tests are a little tricky, but if you do a little studying you'll be fine. I learned a lot, and he's wayyy better than Gerhart
test r tricky, his test = upper division tests , reading book, going lecture,= useless for the tests. you want to pass only if u are mastered of bio..if u want a funny teacher , take it he's kinda funny
The lectures are clear and understandable, but honestly when you go take the test, NOTHING from the lecture is on there. The tests are ridiculous and sometimes it's hard to figure out what he even wants from you on them due to wording. A lot of time is required to achieve a reasonable grade in this class.
Prof. Comai is very knowledgeable of the materials. He has a great sense of humor and generally very enjoyable. Loves his students. His midterms are reasonable and final grades are based on class distribution. Therefore, it's not his fault you have a bad grade, it's everyone else are just doing better than you. So study harder! I def recommend him.
Learn absolutely nothing.........his note is not clear, notes are messy, you cant recognize what was going on on the note when next time u look at it. his expectation to student is too high for the exam..well but we are just beginner learner of biology....read the book = didn read it, cuz the exam is another thing...
2 words: his funny, but cant teach , iam done
he is pretty funny in lecture, but very confusing and not organized at all. he gives much less homework than gerhart, but his tests are REALLY difficult and have very little to do with what he actually teaches, so you have to learn A LOT on your own time.
Dr. Comai is fantastic. He spends a huge amount of time answering questions on the chat forum, even on weekends. He truly wants students to learn and succeed. He does follow the text, and it is very helpful, despite what others may say. He wants his students to think, but isn't that what we are all in college for? If you work hard, you will do well
don't hesitate to argue about the answers to the tests. theres often more than one good answer and he can be convinced to give you credit
"Prof." Comai can't teach. Every year students average a low ~65% on midterms/finals. That fact says that students are not understanding the material. Lectures are useless - very general. The notes he posts on his site are very specific & helpful. Failed 20% of his students in S'10. If you averaged on mts/final you're at the C range.
I want to be fair and say I disagree with many comments here. If you do all the study guides online (DO THEM, they don't take that long), take the effort to understand, study your notes, review his lecture notes on smartsite, then there is no reason not to get an A. He's a really nice guy and funny too. Explained all questions in detail if you ask.
I took AP BIO yet I learned a lot in-depth stuff on what I previous know. Tests are a lot similar to my old bio class so no complain. Could be too in-depth for people who don't have background in bio. Many questions in study guides and tests reflect real laboratory/research problems. Strongly recommended for people who have some bio background.
Tough professor! His explanations during lecture aren't always very clear, but he posts his notes, study questions, and other helpful materials on smartsite. Much better to have background in bio before this class. Probably why it was tough for me. He's a funny and nice guy though. Tough tests! BEWARE OF THEM!
Professor Comai is an ok professor. Lectures have clicker questions and are meant to introduce the material. Dont rely on lectures, you have to read the book. Tests are all multiple choice and somewhat difficult, but if you read all assigned pages you will have a good chance of getting an A
I really disliked this class and professor. He was difficult to understand and I thought the wording on his tests was very confusing. I would not recommend this prof if you are new to bio, which I was. However, if you have a background in bio and are willing to put in work, I'm sure he's a fine teacher.
It's true that his tests are a bit tricky, but even without previously taking AP Bio in high school, I still got an A in this class (I was able to teach myself a few concepts I didn't understand from class). His notes are not very clear, but he goes on the chat room all the time to answer any question you have.
Dr. Comai made BIS2A one of my favorite classes at Davis so far. He is clear and really makes you apply to the material you learned on the test. Some people see this as "tricky" because it is not memorization-oriented but I think it tests your knowledge better. He kept the class entertaining and used solid metaphors to clarify the subject.
This professor posts all of his material online. He tells you exactly what will be on the test. He is very funny which makes the class interesting. He tells you what to focus when you have to study for a midterm. He helps you focus on what you are actually going to be tested on. LOVED THIS PROFESSOR !
He is very passionate about what he teaches. He makes the lecture interesting by giving situations rather than definitions. However, I felt like I did not truly grasp the material because he did not teach the background information beforehand. Tests are all MC, difficult, but doable.
Should avoid this professor if you are new to bio. Doesn't explain background information and lecture is very scattered. Very nice guy, but not a very good teacher. TA's were very unhelpful.
Must avoid. Be prepared to be frustrated and not learn anything. The Bio discussions are the worst. Complete waste of time.
AVOID HIM! Coming in as a Genetics major, & having already taken Honors & AP BIO in HS, I would say that if I didn't have the prior foundation of what I learned, I would have been screwed. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Tests=vague questions & awkward phrasing. For me, I hated lecture due 2 the way he presents. Does drawings insteadof actual notes. Got an A- tho
Avoid this professor. His lectures are pointless because all he does is draw pictures and explain things with NO NOTES, which doesn't help when you have to study. His tests are somewhat difficult and vague. Don't take his class if you want to understand things and learn in lecture because he will leave you confused and frustrated.
A very funny guy. Exams are poorly worded some times. Web assignment is an easy 100 percent, there are clicker questions. In discussion you might get the hard TA whereas others may have easy ones. If everyone does well, the curve will be negligible for the higher grades.avoid if you want a high grade
Doesn't use the text and doesn't require BioPortal; clicker is mandatory. Lectures with Whiteboards and doodle drawings. Posts lectures notes, podcasts, and Whiteboards online. Tests are hard and questions are often worded poorly, but they're fair. He also has a web assignment for points. Overall, a very funny and nice guy, and a decent professor.
Horrible teacher!! Rants and does not know the answers to his own questions in his exams. He asks the students for the answers because he does not know how to explain them. When you ask him to explain he'll most likely say "I don't know but its not because I'm ignorant." Has useless reviews and hard exams. (NO CURVE)
Attending lectures is mandatory since part of your grade is based on answering clicker questions. To get full score you have to attend at least 13 lectures I think. It's possible to study only his lectures and white board drawings and get an A in the class. I found the exams to be really easy, you just have to use a lot critical thinking.
He makes the tests unnecessarily difficult. He tries to trick you on most of the questions/you have to think really hard for each question. He draws during lectures. He's a funny guy and will help you if you need help. There are 4 midterms and 1 final so study hard! Study off of the lecture white boards, listen to podcasts, and go to office hours.
Reading the textbook won't help very much. His tests are difficult only because of the way he words things. He is a very good teacher and I learned a lot. His clicker questions are relatively easy, and I would recommend reading before going to class.
I took APBio beforehand, which helped immensely with the material taught. He is a funny guy (or tries to!) and does care about his students and their understanding of the subject material. The question wording on his exams were questionable, but take your time answering them and know that TA's will help you with them. Overall, an enjoyable class.
Very likable guy. A good teacher, uses lots of examples. Straight forward tests.
I absolutely love him! Alright he may not be the best professor and he could have put in more effort into his lecture, but overall he is a very nice professor and is willing to help out his students. He even video tape a midterm review session for us because he know he couldn't manage to schedule one. Tests are not bad study the sample exams.
He is an absolutely amazing professor. I never get bored in his class. He is a funny guy. He is always there to help you. He also videotapes his lectures.
His lectures are pretty interesting because he constantly makes jokes. Exams are straight forward and are very similar to the multiple practice exams provides. He is not the greatest explainer and is confusing at times.
He is pretty funny and a good guy overall with a deep interest in biology. However, his lectures can be confusing sometimes (It's unclear what to take from his lecture slides). We had iClicker questions in lecture, but they weren't too hard. He outlines the basis of each exam, which was nice.
Likable and funny, draws pictures to explain things visually. Lectures are thorough and correspond with material on test. Audio and video records lectures which are very helpful. Posts past tests which are very similar to the tests you will take. Great professor!
Grading is harsh, I was 2 points from an A. Professor is soft spoken, cannot understand him with low microphone. Professor goes off topic and has unclear lectures most of the time. Exams are similar to practice. Everything is posted which is great. 4 Exams are all MC. Discussion quizzes are bad. Curves the class, but unforgiving. No book needed.
His lectures are confusing. He does try to explain concepts the best he can, but it is still very unclear. Wikipedia was my friend for the whole duration of this class. His tests are also unclear. The multiple choice questions are worded very vaguely and grammatically incorrect, which makes it hard to understand the questions. He is very funny, tho
The worst teacher. He does not explain well, he seems like talking to himself and tests are hard. Sometime you don't understand what he is talking about.
This is a long class. Genetics is a hard subject and his teaching method makes it harder. I can tell he's trying. He uses a lot of technology to give students resources, maybe too much. His smartsite is so complicated. External links galore. He's a fast speaker & the homework was useless because his tests didn't reflect it. The tests are wired.
Lectures are so long but his sense of humor helps make lectures a bit more engaging. Book problems don't help so much since his exams don't really reflect the material in the book so well, it's pretty much just all lecture based. Offers a lot of resources to students so he does care. Also very approachable.
Three midterms, each of them are 32M.C in fifty minutes. They are not too bad but you'll have another hour of class after the midterms.... And he tends to over complicate things so don't expect that he'll be clearer if you ask him to explain something...
One of the worst professors I've had at Davis, especially from the BIS department. His lectures are boring and extremely unhelpful, you're better off just reading the textbook. He's unclear about the material and makes many errors and tends to go off topic frequently. His only redeeming quality is that he seems like a nice guy.
Hilarious professor and tests are pretty easy. Do his study guides that he puts out and you'll do well.
His lectures are not bad. He is a funny guy and a really nice person. His tests are really long and he only gives you 50 min to take them so get used to working fast. If you like the material you will probably do well, otherwise...I don't know.
Fantastic professor. Responds to students and tries to make things as clear as possible, going above and beyond to give you study resources (like extra videos on SmartSite where he goes over difficult concepts in more detail). Passionate about genetics and knows his stuff, plus his jokes make two-hour lectures more bearable. Definitely recommend!
Decent lecturer. Makes a lot of errors and tends to over complicate things. Don't bother getting the book since his exams don't reflect the book problems he assigns. Do the study questions and that should help you out a bit. Exams are written really poorly (super ambiguous and confusing).
Usual upper div professor. Exams are tough, but what can you expect from upper div bio classes. Review lecture notes and read sections in book and you'll do fine
Comai has strange lectures, but reviewing lectures slides and podcasting is a must! Had to definately use the book on this one.
Dr. Comai seems like a really nice guy, he might even be a good lecturer, but I'm taking the flipped class so I wouldn't know. You get at most 20 minutes of lecture from him to listen to at home while your two hour lecture blocks are only for clicker questions. He may change also the grading system half way through the quarter. Avoid!
first time taking a "flipped class" not a fan of this method, though I can understand why he chose to run a class this way. Unfortunately I felt that I was behind when trying to catch up to material. Not really sure what his tests were a reflection of. Just have to really understand the concepts I guess.
By far THE WORST class I have taken in UCDavis. The amount of time you need to commit to this class is beyond ridiculous. He makes jokes about how people are failing and does not seem to care that they are. Gave us 5 midterms thinking it's a good idea, so every other week I was just pulling all-nighters only to fail the midterms anyway.
There were a lot of clicker questions and exams in lecture and online quizzes before and/or after lecture but they were all very helpful. Luca is a fair grader and a great lecturer, his course helped me learn without just trying to memorize concepts. Outside of class, I mostly just did the assignments and still averaged a B on the midterm exams.
So In all honesty I hate this class, however I did learn a lot from this class that I WILL NEVER FORGET LIKE REALLY. Literally dedicated my whole winter quarter tot this class because there was a lot of homework and 5 midterms every other week. This class is demanding but he is a fair grader and he has a great curve. Good luck to those who take him
Flipped learning system with a lot of online homework. Lectures can be unclear but he will go out of his way to help you in OH. TAs are awesome, and discussion is so helpful! Exams are tough, but grading is fair. A lot of people are just lazy and expect an Easy A. Hard class, but use your resources and you will do well! Good luck (:
His tests are simple as long as you take your time and read it. He used a flip learning system and if your test grades weren't good, he used your online homework and made that weigh more. He's a great professor and I learned a lot from him despite him being really tough. Averaged B on tests, but my activity points were high so got A- in class.
A lot of homework but that helps you buffer your grade. He's really good professor and extremely helpful if asked. People complain about him are the ones who dont take time to go to office hours or ask. Worked hard for an A in this class and really enjoyed it. Downside was the flip learning but it was whatever.
Great class. Super easy as long as you put in work. He tries to make things more interesting in every lecture and making things easier to understand. only thing I hated was the clicker questions since he graded you on the ones you got right instead on participation. That seriously brought down my grade. Still ended getting an A in the class.
Luca is a great professor and takes his time to explain everything! I rarely paid attention in lecture but I followed his FLIP system and did the practice midterm. I thought the exams were fair. I did'nt like the 5 midterms . I did not like that we did not have enough time for the exams. if he gives more time for exams this quarter, take him!!!
great professor. He used the "flipped" lecture method which was SO helpful. He was great with stressing important topics, taking time to explain if students aren't understanding, and listening to concerns/feedback from the students. 5 midterms sucked, but they were fair and not too difficult. As long as you take time to study you'll do well
He was very helpful (I had appts with him weekly!) He also listened to and incorporated our feedback. I'd never had a prof who cared so much about his students. It was not easy though. The class was flipped and you really had to learn how to apply your knowledge to do well on the tests. He gives you plenty of practice though. Overall, great!
Comai is a funny professor! The class is flipped - so you do the reading beforehand and come to class to answer the clicker questions. Not much actual teaching in class. He provides lots of resources and videos, but it's a bit excessive. There are online quizzes almost every day, and 5 midterms. It's a very demanding class.
Professor Comai is one of my favorite professors! Genetics is not my favorite subject, but he makes it very enjoyable. The course is flipped so expect to do a lot of work outside of class. Even though its annoying, it helps you stay on track with the class, which helps since theres a lot of content. I recommend taking it with a lighter schedule.
Everyone gets turned off by the 5 midterms he gives, but it means less material to study for each one. The online quizzes help you prepare for them. He has a sense of humor and is willing to clarify anything. The material is very dense! Sign up for the discussion section. Flipped course you have to read the material before the lecture.
Here are some good things about his class: he has a 20% drop policy (drops the lowest 20% of each grade group i.e. clickers, midterms, online quizzes and replaces it with mean from the 80%), midterm Q's similar to clicker and quiz Q's, LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR HELP, and he has podcasts/screencasts. Good time management would help in this class.
Alright so Professor Comai is awesome. He is funny and makes lectures fun and interesting! however this class has the most outside work I have had yet in my three years at Davis. About two online quizzes due before each lecture and 2 online quizzes that you can only take once due per week. GET A CLICKER, clicker questions are graded.
He is very knowledgeable, funny, and he truly cares about his students. Exams are fair. But flipping the classroom is extremely time consuming, and he's not good about getting online assignments up well ahead of time. So much time and effort since you basically teach yourself the material. Lecture is redundant but you have to go to answer clickers.
A really funny professor but OMG this class is intense. He uses the flipped lecture in which you basically teach yourself every lecture before going to class . Lecture class consist of answering clicker questions which counts as your activity points. Crazy amount of online quizzes and 5 midterms! He said he would curve our final grade but didn't..
Best way to describe this class: heavy. Flipped class means a lot of external work (videos, readings, online quizzes) and a lot of attention required in class (clicker points). He goes from Mendel to CRISPR in deep detail, with tricky questions. You HAVE to know your stuff ridiculously well to get a A or B. 5 midterms.
Lots of work! Basically a full-time job but you learn a lot. He does not make you memorize a lot of information though, Most problems are on thinking critically and using the information that you know too figure it out. Definitely not an easy A but Comai is a funny and cares if you understand a concept or not.
Full time job, like how bad of a teacher do you have to be to force the students to teach themselves. It really doesn't make sense, and soooo much work. Easily put in 20-30 hours a week. Easy C, work hard for a B, and you cannot have a life if you want an A. He doesn't teach, and his TAs do not know what they are doing.
A lot of work, but he is very accommodating and really cares about the success of his students. Five "midterms" , class is curved and there are other points available. On the second midterm there was a lot of students who struggled with the length of the test given the allotted time , so he made sure to make the next test shorter. Truly is fair
Dr. Comai is an excellent professor who is very personable and cares about his students. Although the flipped class style is a lot of work, it ensures understanding of the material. He tests on very clear concepts laid out by practice questions. If you commit to doing the work required you will do very well, as he is a fair grader and very helpful.
Professor Comai is a hilarious professor that really cares about his students understanding. His tests are straightforward and only ever involve things he has explicitly gone over. Best of all, he never has any kind of trick question, and never includes answers that you can get if you do it wrong.
I loved this class and Comai! Yes it is a lot of work, but honestly as a student that constantly procrastinates it really helped make sure I never fell too far behind. The multiple forms of exposure (ie online modules and in class practice) really helped solidify the material. Don't be scared of the 5 midterms they are so manageable and very fair!
Professor Comai is the best professor I have ever taken! This class has 5 midterms, each provided with a practice midterm (make sure to study those). Since this course is flipped, you learn the materials by yourself and then apply it to lecture. The questions on his exams are straight forward and there is a class curve at the end.
Not a fan of the flipped format; but generally he is a good professor and responsive. Five midterms but he drops your lowest one, averages on tests were around 73-80%. DO THE PRACTICE MIDTERMS/FINAL
I love Dr. Comai. He and his team this quarter were absolutely amazing, and VERY accessible to questions via Piazza and office hours. HIS PASTA RECIPE IS BOMB
COMAI IS THE BEST! Comai is the most fair teacher ever. His modules are clear, the clickers are helpful, grading is simple and he really care about the students. TAKE HIM. You will learn and putting in full effort in the hw is all you need to succeed in his class. I LOVE HIM. 5 midterms sucks, but really helpful actually.
Professor Comai's class was one of the toughest and most enjoyable class I have taken thus far. He teaches in a "flipped" method, where you must learn the material yourself through modules and videos outside of lecture. But, he is really caring and drops 20% lowest with a curve at the end as he understands the pains of being a student. funny af too
I took this class with three other sciences classes and this class took a majority of my time. The concepts are not difficult but there's just ALOT of them. Go to office hours as soon as you get confused. 5 midterms but lowest get averaged away + clickers in lecture. Overall, he's a funny guy, I learned but it was just so much work.
clickers are very important, the flipped class was okay and manageable, it honestly sucks the first couple of weeks but you learn to get used to it. Comai is very funny, kind and approachable and really understands our situation and would try to adjust due dates for those who constantly asked for them. Lots of stuff and 5 midterms but doable
Comai was and is a great, friendly, funny, and brilliant professor. He was able to make genetics actually enjoyable. This is definitely a difficult class though. It is a flipped lecture, so that means there is A LOT of outside-of-class work. All the time. Non-stop. Andthere are midterms every 2 weeks (5 in total) because there is so much material.
The class is a flipped course which means you teach yourself and spend the majority of your time taking quizzes. The scheduled lecture time is filled with clicker questions in which you get a point if its right. The class itself has about 7 assignments and 2 major online quizzes per week. There is also 5 midterms and a 20% drop policy which is nice
Professor Comai really cares about his students. This is a flipped learning class, so it means you have to do a lot of learning on your own, but his lectures reaffirmed and further fortified the modules assigned on Canvas. He was a really kind guy and wasn't afraid to crack a few jokes!
So. Much. Homework. You won't understand how much work it is until you actually take the course. Put in the work BEFORE class or you will be lost and lose so many clicker points. Tests are majority of your points. You really have to work to understand the material and how to apply it. It's not just memorization (cheat sheets on every test).
Comai's class is a ton of work. Its all pretty manageable. And the drop policy is a life saver. Comai covers a ton of material!! This class is a ton of work make sure to go to class prepared so you can be well prepared for the clicker quizzes. Comai is very nice and funny in class. His TAs are helpful.
I actually enjoyed Professor Comai's class. His flipped course style was not even bad and it made lecture much more understandable. Must attend class for clicker questions. Good drop policy. The TAs were super helpful in discussion.
Possibly the best teacher I have ever had. Top three, certainly. Clear lectures, great grading style, and hilarious. If I could take Comai for every single class, I would.
Why are there not recent reviews?! Prof Comai is AMAZING and FUNNY! I was skeptical with the flipped style at first, but it just takes some getting used to. He is definitely passionate about his teaching and cares about his students. He allows cheat sheets, has an awesome drop policy, and "midterms" are fair and NOT cumulative! LOVE THIS GUY 10/10
The flipped course is no joke lol it's A LOT of work, not going to lie. I spent more time on this class than any other course this quarter (and that's with physics and two research classes) but it does help you learn. And his grading is extremely generous, GPQs are points he basically gives to you, he drops the lowest midterm AND there's a curve
Attendance is mandatory as lecture is all clicker questions and he will randomly call out students to answer questions. The flipped class is A LOT of work so be prepared to invest a lot of time! Comai is hilarious and the videos and notes he uploads on Canvas are very helpful but lectures are pretty useless and I only attended for clicker points
A lot of work in this class. BUT!! you will learn a lot more than taking bis 101 with Comai than other professors. If you need to take more in-depth classes (like MCB classes), his class is a good choice to choose. In his class, you have to work harder than any other classes, but everything is fair game. Go to TA's OH as much as you can!!
I would recommend taking this class, if the other classes you are taking do not require as much work. This class makes you spend all your day reading/watching videos/taking quizzes and tests. Most of the wording on tests/ quizzes make the subject seem harder than it is. Overall this class isnt horrible but it is extremely time consuming.
there's a20% drop policy for everything + he curves everything. avg was about 80% so there really shouldn't be a curve but he's so nice he still curves the class. 74% gives you a C+. 1 Cheat sheet is allowed for the 5 midterms and 2 for the final. about 70% of the final is like the practice final, almost the exact same but diff wording obviously.
Took him during the pandemic, and while flip-the-classroom might work normally, it doesn't w/ COVID. Assigns a crazy amount of work that you are teaching yourself as his practice problem lectures are recorded. Practice quizzes are not similar to actual quizzes or exams, asks specific detailed q's. He's a sweet person, but you are teaching yourself.
Never take this class. Avoid this professor. This class was horrible. I spent 10+ hours a week doing the homework assignments (modules) and I still didn't understand the material. The class content is not difficult, the professor's wordy test questions and high expectations made this class horrible. This class made me want to drop out of college.
Comai is definitely inspirational and really knows what he's teaching, but the "flipped course" style was very difficult. It was too easy to fall behind and get lost in the material, and with 5 midterms and a final the workload was way too heavy. Attend minilectures if you can!
The professor is a nice guy and tries to listen to students. Exams are tricky and hard 1 hour to do about 30 problems. Tests are weighted heavily. You have to complete MEQs (mini-quizzes) weekly. Along with GPQs (HW) weekly. Discussion Sections are mandatory.
A lot of people in my class really loved him, and I understand why. He is very kind, funny, and goofy, however, I think he makes this class a lot more demanding and stressful than it needs to be. If you want to be a geneticist his class will be great, but if you just need BIS101 try to get into someone else's class this one is SO hard.
Dr. Comai is super caring and funny. This class is a lot of work. Several quizzes per week. 5 midterms + final. Pre-recorded lectures were meh. Dr. C does practice problems in live lecture; you get extra credit for attending. The exams are tough but you get a cheat sheet. Also we did a group project, but it felt disorganized and unnecessary.
5 midterms and a mandatory final. Midterm 5 is on finals week and a large project is also due on week 10. Exam questions are poorly worded. Other professors(Crowder) will be significantly easier.
Comai is a very kind hearted professor but his teaching tactics are impractical. 5 midterms, including a final, group project, and a lot of reading along with lecture videos. It felt unfair and very different from other BIS101 courses which are a lot less workload heavy. Take someone else unless you have a lot of time to dedicate to this class.
Dr. Comai is a very nice person and is flexible to the feedback of students. This class is designed so you have to work on it a lot, expect to put in a 1-2 hrs work every day just to keep up with lecture work/homework, but it also breaks up the workload nicely and forces you to really learn. Tests are fair. Offers lots of extra credit as well.
Honestly u have to but so much time in this class because most of his lectures were prerecorded and his live lectures were more office hour like. He is very caring but ur grade will reflect how much u understand. The curve for winter 2020 didn't help at all. He doesn't go over stuff u should already know from other bis classes. GL!
you do need to put in more work for this class than other BIS101 classes im sure but Comai is very willing to explain things if you have questions. group project, 4 exams, 1 final and every week you have a quiz for points. He does drop exams and uses clickers so show up to class. Not that bad of a prof if you have a good foundation with bio already
personal his teaching method wasn't for me. He a caring professor but the way he do lecture aren't for the unprepared studnet. If he change he teaching method to a normal way, I would have stayed in his class. Don't take if his fliped method really confused you. plus alot of exams for this class. 1st exam in the 1st week
Study for 2-3 hours outside of class, class averages on test 67-70. He expects you to read and understand material prior to coming to class which would be fine except this is material your learning for the first time and are expected to know, understand and be quizzed on it. He says it only takes 40 min to do modules but actually takes 2-3 hrs
Doesn't actually teach much, just recycles old lectures and Khan academy videos. At least 1-2 quizzes per week on top of biweekly midterms and a group project that was useless. Spent hours studying the modules and practice exams but he words questions in such a confusing manner that I still got majority Ds on all the quizzes. just take someone else
if I was still pre med I would have loved this class. you do learn alot but it is extremely time consuming and the professor goes really into detail with the concepts. If you like to learn for the sake of learning take this class, if youre looking for an easy pass consider another professor.
Comai is a wonderful professor. He is very entertaining and I learned a lot in this class. However, this is a flipped format class and you MUST do all of the module work before going to class, otherwise the material might not make sense. Do not take this class if you can't spent at least a few hours every day doing work.
Modules are videos from Youtube, with 15% being his own videos. His videos are fairly confusing. He focuses on general knowledge of the subject, uses complicated, hypothetical examples to further explain. Flipped classroom, you spend about 3-4 hours taking notes outside class. Graded in-class participation questions, weekly quizzes, 1 group proj.
Initially, I did not like the flipped class because it seemed like extra work, but in reality, it is a great system. Doing it this way saves so much time studying later on for the exams. The professor himself is very knowledgeable on all topics and is able to answer every question. Those who enjoy molecular biology will enjoy this class.
If you want to be knowledgeable about genetics - take Comai! However, his flipped class structure is definitely NOT FOR EVERYONE! You will have to put in 2-4 hours/day to keep up with the modules he assigns you or YOU WILL BE LOST AND FALL BEHIND. If you have a lighter schedule, take him, he is a great professor!
one of my favorite classes! comai is an amazing lecturer (took this with ochem, mcb and a ge) this class did require some time commitment but the topics itself aren’t hard at all. I did spend a lotta time taking notes but the flipped structure is neat because you’re constantly studying and don’t have to cram last minute for exams
Overall, Comai is a good professor and explain the subject clearly and in-depth. The material in itself is not too hard but he bombards you with a lot of assignments (quizzes, 4 midterm, clicker, etc). Pros, the assignment keeps you on track so you are never cramming. Con, THERE IS A LOT OF ASSIGNMENT so make sure not to fall behind.
Dr.Comai drop the lowest midterm, lowest 25% attendance, and lowest 25% MEQ this quarter. You can still get a pretty good grade even you failed one midterm or forget some of the the MEQs.
Prof. Comai is good at lecturing and drops lots of grade. However, lectures materials are overwhelming and you have to learn them before you come to class.
Comai had a flipped class, which helped in the beginning but became overwhelming at the end. So many clickers, GPQs, MEQs, and practice questions but they all helped me get an average final grade (along with the curve). He's knowledgeable about genetics but it was hard keeping up with the extra work
You need to prepare for the material first before going to the lecture (just watch some videos and take notes). He will go over them again in the lecture and explain things. Tests are easy if you get the concepts and study hard. He's a nice guy and genuinely wants everyone to get good grades. Review quizzes and do practice exams to prepare.
He is a really sweet guy, this quarter we didn't have many graded assignments because he made his older graded quizzes practice for us. Our grade pretty much consists of clicker questions (why attendance is mandatory) and exams, the exams weigh heavily and it sucks. He responds to emails quickly and he responds to piazza daily. The head TA is great
He goes way too fast in lectures, and exam questions require a deep understanding of the material. Get ready to devote a lot of time being on Canvas watching videos and getting frustrated over exam wording (GQPs and rMEQ are not apart of the grade). Only the lowest six clicker questions were dropped and the questions were graded by correctness.
Prof Comi is a nice & passionate person! But, his lectures are just so confusing. slides feel out of order. Lots of information given at once with little debriefing time. Prof tries his best but his almost improv lecture style made it confusing :/ You will find yourself learning way more content than is tested from Comi. Get ready to self-study!
A hard class. Lecture heavy. Many videos and readings in the modules. Many iclicker questions and the grades were based on completion and correctness. Very stressful. But he curves in the end. He is a very nice person overall.
Comai is great at explaining concepts and gives a ton of practice tests. Tests are challenging but fair and often have questions straight from the practice tests. You'll be fine as long as you study. Overall, moderately difficult class but was fun and interesting. Loved having Comai as a prof!
OMG definitely my best professor at UC Davis! Great lectures and great exams made. You just need to understand all lectures, do some practice quizzes on each topic, and you will do well. Clickers shouldn't be graded if not went over during lectures. GPQ should be graded instead so it gives us chance to learn from error without affecting grade.
There were like three quizzes per week that was about 10% of your grade. Midterms were okay, just use the resources he provided and you'll be okay. His lectures can sometimes be confusing, but his supplementary videos are very helpful. There was a curve at the end of the course and he allows us to use cheatsheets during the exam
Professor Comai's lectures are enlightening, and one of my favorite lectures so far. The information he provided in lectures can be heavy, sometimes there will be some new and abstruse concepts that come up in class, don't hesitate to ask him about these, you will learn from his explanation. To get an A, you need to understand all quiz questions.
I loved Luca Comai he's such a G, his lectures are basically useless and kinda tough to keep on top of but the online material is rlly good and understandable and the quality of the online materials makes it very easy to catch up, and I like his neon yellow vest and drawings. Great professor, don't sleep on his risotto recipe!!
Comai is very disorganized. Class is flipped. Be prepared to watch tons of YouTube videos before class. The lecture is totally different from the videos. Difficult Clicker questions that are graded on correctness and are not related to the lecture. Exams are hard and are mainly multiple choice each worth five points which is very unreasonable. BAD!
EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED AND DISAPPOINTED. Prof. Comai will begin by uploading the lecture slides before the class but will over and under emphasise topics in lecture. There is no guarantee of what he will test on the midterms. The grading was incredible confusing to interpret and the midterm had unrelated material and very hard questions.
Comai seems like a very nice person, but as a professor, he is very disorganized. Have to prepare before class by watching hours of lectures and taking notes as he will gloss over the content in class. Clicker questions daily that are graded on correctness and it is usually a difficult question with no prior examples. Overall just a bad course.
Professor Comai is very passionate about biology and seems like a genuinely nice person. However, his lectures are hard to follow and his tests are multiple choice out of 100 points with each question being worth 5 points. Keeping that in mind, a few mistakes can drastically drop ur test score. Online exam this quarter was also extremely unfair.
This is a tough class, and it's flipped, so get ready to self-teach, but Dr. Comai is so lovely and funny that it's worth your time. Clickers are graded so attendance is mandatory. Study hard and you'll do just fine.
Just take someone else, as it is already a difficult course and he does not make it any easier. His questions are very confusing and you really need an expert understanding of the content to be able to answer them. I'm not sure how the other BIS101 teachers are, but it'd be worth saving the headache and taking them instead.
Quite confused by this professor's rating as he has been one of the worst professors I have had here at Davis. Though he has clear knowledge on this topic, his method of delivery to students is largely inefficient and his tests are not at all similar to the practice questions or content received during class.
Comai is sweet, but his class is entirely grades on exams. His lectures are very long and extremely confusing, and attendance is mandatory since iClicker is graded on CORRECTNESS. 25-30 questions on exams worth 100 points, so even a couple mistakes and your grade plummets. The test questions are overly complicated and confusing. Don't reccommend.
Good luck. He is very disorganized. Does not know how to ask questions in plain English. Lots of time is spent trying to figure out what the question is asking rather than a test of material knowledge. Lots of time is required for the course with the flipped format, attendance is mandatory because of iClicker. Choose any other professor.
Professor Comai has a sense of humor and seems nice outside of class, but he isn't an effective lecturer. Each lecture has quizzes and that's the only reason I went because lectures were useless. His lectures didn't line up with exams and I found his online material unhelpful. Exam/quiz questions are difficult to understand bc of many typos.
midterms and quizzes were harder and much more overcomplicated than the lecture or pre-lecture videos. every questions feels like it's meant to trick you, super funny guy but avoid if u can :/
Very dense content, exams tested mainly on practical application, even though lecture was mainly theoretical. Very kind, very smart, but just an intense class
Awwwwful! His lectures are confusing. I learned all the material on my own watching the module videos. His test are ridiculously hard and confusing. I honestly knew the martirial and felt confident but the test was just so different. Also he gives free points for certain questions so hope u get those because not everyone will.
The class is flipped, so you would have to mainly study on your own and prepare for the topic before class to do well. Assigned videos can take hours because he speaks so fast that you would have to rewind a few times. Your knowledge is tested on iClickers during lectures and attendance is mandatory not to miss those points. RLLY HARD CLASS!
Dr. Comai is a super funny and kind person, but he isn't the best teacher. Lectures were long and convoluted with almost illegible handwriting. His explanations were also not very clear. I appreciated the flipped version of the course, where we had access to practice quizzes and videos. I also got super lucky with having a rly good discussion TA.
Get ready to study and prepare on your own before lecture because that time will be used only to review the material. Your knowledge is tested on iClickers during lectures, you get a cheat sheet for tests, & doesn't drop any midterms. Not the WORSE professor I have had if you ask he will explain it in a better way. Don't fall behind on the material
Hard class with a lot of information given to students in a short amount of time. Has a flipped class with mandatory attendance. Although the course was hard, the professor is able to teach well in his pre-lecture videos.
Lectures are practically mandatory cause of graded clicker Qs based on correctness. Midterms that were in person were fair, online ones.. not so much. HATED his "flipped course" you basically teach yourself before coming to class. However, the curve is fat and he's funny. Just don't fall behind!
Very kind and transparent professor. It's clear he puts a lot of effort into the students. His class structure drew many complaints but worked pretty well for me.
I took Comai during winter 2021 so there may have been changes in course structure since then. During that quarter every other BIS101 professor had an optional final due to COVID but Comai still made it mandatory alongside 5 (!) midterms. Unreasonable and did not enjoy this course.
Avoid him!!!! Exams are not related to his lectures and the textbook. He posts tons of videos from YouTube and expects us to memorize them. Exams are super hard. He has a bell curve which is not fair for everyone. He did not say if the final was cumulative till the finals week. Avoid him at any cost.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! Comai is a funny sweet old man BUT he is not a good professor. He is very intelligent and expects his students to know as much as he does. Get ready to teach yourself before attending class (this can be hard to juggle). Also, his exams ARE so hard and the weekly assignments are too. Iclicker is graded & allows for a cheat sheet.
Dr. Comai is passionate about the topic but the way he teaches it is ineffective. He is super funny and his jokes are great but I felt like there was a disconnect between the students and his teaching style. The TA's helped a lot with explaining what he wanted us to know. Lectures were a lot of info and the iClickers are graded which is horrible.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!! HE GAVE THE HARDEST CLASS AT UC DAVIS.
The tests are very material intense. Class participation is graded. Go to office hours
Dr. Comai is the kindest professor I have ever encountered and provides a big curve. Unfortunately, his teaching style is far from perfect. He teaches material far more advanced than what the class is supposed to cover. I tried going to BIS101 tutoring multiple times and the tutors were unable to help at all. Tophat is graded on correctness.
Professor Comai is such a sweet guy but the way he lectures isn't all that great. Class is mostly mandatory since part of the grade is tophat questions. Quizzes every week. There is a curve that it taken to consideration at the end of the course. Enroll in the discussion if possible, the TA helped me understand the concepts a lot more!!
