Gets really excited about mundane details, but in all honesty, its actually a fairly interesting and fun class. Readings will help, but they're not always relevant. The key to sucess in this class is to fill out the reveiw sheet properly and learn to wirite a decent essay. WATCH YOUR COMMAS!!!

before this class i HATED history...now it's my most fav. class... he is such a fun teacher and gets excited about little thing which keeps the class up beat, he is always there for help... i def. recomend him
Awesome awesome prof! He loves what he does and you can't help but have that rub off. I never really was a big fan of history, but he makes it tolerable! Only wish he would teach Since 1500! Just pay attention, take decent notes, and have an opened mind...and you'll do just fine! I loved this class!
Lucien is a wonderful teacher and person alike. I know that I will take him again in the future. He makes history so much fun. He is so incredibly smart and this is clearly obvious with his interesting lectures. I wish all professors were like him. So happy to be living in Ziegler with him!
He likes to ramble, and sometimes gets a little carried away with himself, but he is very interested in what he does and if you really like history i recommend his course!
awesome teacher, knows the material well. Grades kinda hard but always there to help!
awesome!
He's a good teacher and he's always willing to help. Go for extra help and you'll be set. The tests aren't that bad. He grades hard on papers and essays.
Lucien is an awesome professor. His class is really great to have early in the morning. He is funny, and he also talks funny too. He is very knowledgeable about his material. He is a hard grader on his tests. His mid-term and final are very very hard. I hated this class but then again I hate history. But, be sure to choose him for your professor!!!
Watch it now.
Wonderful prof. A lot of reading and notes, both a must. If you take him, be sure to ask him what he likes to do when he goes to IKEA.
I love this class! Frary is wonderful and funny. If you need to take a history class make sure that he is your professor!
adorable
Frary is a wonderful professor (not to mention adorable). I noticed someone else on here mentioned a "Frary-ism". During his lectures, he will say "Watch it now" when he has something exciting to share. Thanks to him, my friends and I have included that in our daily speech...LOL! Overall...a great professor!
Very good professor. A must for any history student to take. But you need to do the readings close to schedule and take good notes. Very enthusiastic about his subjects.
Great Guy, loves his topics. Makes class interesting. Alot of reading, but it is a history course after all. One of my fav profs at Rider.
I love mr lucien frary. honestly before this class i hated history. He teaches great and has a great knowledge of his subject. He loves camels! His quizzes are only on what you learned in class. If he doesnt review it, its not on the tests. His midterm/final he gives you before hand so its EASY.. plus he is an awesome man
hated the class and i really do enjoy learning about history but not form frary
the best professor i had all semister. very helpful. big fan of maps though. quizzes were easy. made the class very interesting. take this professor the moment you can.
Frary is amazing!! His class is pretty easy. You don't have to read but you do have to take good notes. His tests and quizzes are relatively easy but his paper grading is a little tough. He loves camels and he's hysterical. Take him for everything you can!!
lets be frank kids!! i took Dr. Frary last semister and enjoyed his style of teaching so much that i took him the spring semsiter for second yr history. and i'm not even a history major. i think that speaks for itself.
i love frary!! he is the best professor ever!! he really likes camels...he makes the class very interesting...but he always knows when you fall asleep in class...definetly take him if you can <3
Awesome professor! funny, easy, loves history... TAKE HIM if you can
Lucian is the best professor, ever! Period. He is one of the most amazing men I have ever met. He is so intelligent, and you will learn more than just history from him. He speaks many languages, and has traveled the world. He is funny, sweet, and easy to get along with. His work is not too hard and not too easy, it is perfect.
GREAT TEACHER!!! we have two papers and 2 tests that are hard but he makes sure to go over them so you can get a good grade.. always there for help.. lectures are SO interesting!!! great guy!
Fair Prof, will lower your grade if you miss class/quizes considerably. A lil condescending but articulate, knowledgeable and worth having as a prof. He Hates slackers/ppl that fall asleep in his class. Loves students that show interest.
great professor, the best at Rider
not a big deal if you don't read your hw cuz you go over the material the next day...map quizzes are easy if you pay attention..he gives you a review sheet for the mid and final ..which happenes to LOOK ALMOST THE SAME AS THE ACTUAL EXAM ....he makes a lot of weird faces but he's funny...yes you do watch some movies ...and he LOVESSSS CAMELS !!!
Awesome Professor! He tries his best to make the class material relevant and fun. He is a fair grader. Take notes in his class and you will be fine. He uses the textbook to reinforce his lectures. I would highly suggest anyone to take him!
He's pretty cool, but he expects a lot out of you. Lots of reading, and he expects everbody to know what he knows. He is very approachable though if you're having problems. If you're a history major or interested in the subject, then take him. But if you're like me, and just taking it as a requirement, then I don't really recommend him.
his passion for the subject he teaches is contagious. awesome awesome guy!
He's a very harsh grader on tests and expects us to know what he knows. I took another upper level history class with another teacher and she didnt expect half of what he expects out of us. Take him if you're good at remembering vast amounts of information but otherwise I'd reccommend a different professor
He's a great teacher. He does expect you to remember a LOT, but he really only teaches upper-level history. If you're taking those classes, you should know it. I got by the whole year without even looking at the book. I loved this class and am taking him again next semester.
Was an interesting Professor however not very helpful. If your a girl he will pay more attention to you and be nicer but if your a guy and he doesn't like you your pretty much in a bad situation. He is vary passive aggressive, which was not helpful for me. All in all I wouldn't recommend taking him unless all the other classes are filled.
have had him for 3 courses now. the most intellectually stimulating professor ive ever had in history. knows his stuff better than anyone. expects hard work and rewards it.
Dr. Frary is absolutely my favorite professor at Rider. I've had 4 classes with him and loved every single one. He's so knowledgeable, and he's very good at getting information across. He's also very helpful, and overall is a very nice guy. His lectures are interesting. Definitely take a class with him.
He loves what he teaches but expects his students to know a lot. If you're not so good at history or memorizing facts, you might not do well in his class. I took him as my first semester as a history major and struggled. He's not helpful and can sometimes be kind of mean. I made sure that I will never take another one of his classes again.
I loved this class...I got an A and actually looked forward to going to it at 8am! Easy essay grader, I never opened my textbook. Pay attention in class and you're set.
He is an amazing professor with an unlimited amount of knowledge to share with his students. One of the best professors that I have ever encountered! He is extremely passionate about what he teaches and his lectures are both fun and stimulating. If you like history and really care about learning, I highly recommend taking his class!!!
Prof Frary is an interesting teacher who knows a lot about the subject. He wrote most of his notes on the board, which was helpful. His tests were a little difficult, but overall a pretty easy class. Ask him about his visits to Greece, funny stories!
I have literally taken every single Frary class. He is the reason I am a history major. He is literally the best professor at Rider. He is extremely passionate about everything he teaches and can be very funny. He's very fair at grading. He's extremely personable and gets to know his students on a personal level. I want to be him when I grow up.
Coming from someone who hates history, Dr. Frary's passion for it made me enjoy coming to every single 8 am. As long as you write down everything he says (use your computer in class!) Then you'll do perfectly fine!
Prof Frary is one of the best professors I ever had. Knows his stuff and he's a fair grader. Take him if you can.His wife is hot!
He's nice enough, and the class is simple enough, but the midterm review was MASSIVE. He gave us 40 terms and only 10 will be on the test. Better yet we only have to answer 8. He also gave 7 essay questions, only 3 will appear on the test and we'll only have to answer one. WAY too much to study for. I'm definitely worried about my grade.
He is a good prof. Very interesting and fun guy. Knows what he is talking about and class isn't boring. Listen, pay attention and you will be good. He is a hard grader on essays which I didn't find fair grading but he is a good guy. Would reccomend him if you have to take the class.
Best teacher I've had. I needed to put an enormous amount of reading and study time into the class, but also learned more than in any other. He made the material interesting and connected with each student.
WORST PROFESSOR IVE EVER TAKEN, HE GOES THROUGH MATERIAL WAY TO QUICKLY. TESTS ARE RIDICLOUS AND CONTAIN SO MUCH INFORMATION. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!!!
Cool guy. Clear on material. A little toooo much material on the tests/exams. then again its a history course so.
Professor Frary is fought, yes, but that depends on how serious you are as a student. He makes you read! That is for sure, but I find him, and his class to be perfect. He is a extremely passionate about his lectures, and they're entertaining, clear, and helpful. Just take notes, study them for the exam, and the class is easy!
I am taking his class now and i love it!!! He is easy to talk to, and definitely knows his stuff. His quizzes are easy as long as you come to class. Also he gets you interested in history. Im taking history with him again next semester! You must take his class!
He assigns a lot of book work. For awhile I did the readings and was getting As no problem but I slowly realized that all the quizzes covered was lecture stuff. Just pay attention and take notes in class and this class is no problem. Flashcards of his key terms were very effective
Read the chapters before class, be ready to participate (it's 10% of your grade), and always ask questions. He would rather have you actively participating and trying to understand by asking questions to clarify than have you stay quiet while struggling to understand. He is wonderful and I took him again this semester! What a wonderful guy!
Dr. Frary is amazing! I actually looked forward to going to class. He is funny, smart, and very understanding. He is very clear on instructions and gives study guides before every test. He hints at "pop quizzes" the class before so you can prepare. Reading a whole chapter isn't necessary, but in order to follow along in class, skim it. Love him.
I got a C- in History to 1500 and had to drop my class of History since 1500 because I was sure to fail. I decided to retake the History 2 class as a summer course with Professor Frary and it was a great decision. I'm not one who loves history, or even likes history but i am definitely considering retaking history 1 with Frary again
Lots of reading, but not a lot of homeworks at all. Makes history really interesting and fun and kept me engaged every class.
I absolutely hated history my entire life. I've had the privilege to take this teacher for both HIS 150 & 151 (A in both). You will have to do work in this class, but he gives you all the tools you need to succeed! If I wasn't already in love with both the majors I have, without a doubt I would have added history as a majorminor because of him.
I have taken him three times so far, and love him. He makes me want to become a history teacher. His knowledge and his dedication to help his students learn history is endless. He is my favorite Professor here at Rider and I hope he sees this because he deserves to know how much he has impacted my college education. Take him if you can!!
Dr. Frary is probably the best history professor you will take at Rider. He is very knowledgeable about history, and will make learning it enjoyable. He can easily be reached outside of class, and responds quickly. He also gives great feedback on papers.
Prof. Frary is by far one of the best professors at Rider. He is very clear and concise with his lectures and is so knowledgeable about History. His lectures are actually very interesting, I hated History before I took his class. I am taking him again next semester because he is such a great professor. He is well liked and humorous in class.
Professor Frary is a great professor. He gives clear grading criteria and informative lectures. Additionally, he gives constructive feedback on papers to encourage improvement. I highly recommend taking him for any history class that he teaches.
Beware, he is a lecture-heavy professor that grades on very few assignments that are far too vague to ace. Quizzes had random questions on them and tests were excessive. Very dry and dense material that makes you question why you took the course. Would not recommend .
Such an amazing professor. I highly recommend taking his course. Such a genuine prof who always checks in on his students and truly cares. Class is lecture based with occasional videos/movies but if you take notes and pay attention, you'll be fine. Im not a history person but I really enjoyed this class.
Such a great prof! Very lecture heavy but he knew what he was talking out and made the material interesting. Reasonable workload and you are given the study guide for midterms/finals well before, which is super helpful. If you take notes, pay attention, and study, you will do just fine. Graded by a few assignments. Highly recommend!
He is very passionate about his work, HOWEVER, he can get a little too into his work. At one point we watched a fictional film about cavemen who scaringly had inappropriate relations on screen. He is kind of a tough person to deal with and made me scared to approach him. If you LOVE history then take him but don't if it's just a requirement.
I have never been interested in history, but Professor Frary changed that a lot. He is so passionate about the topics he is teaching and can always answer your questions. He engages the class and makes you interested in learning more. If you need to take a history class take Professor Frary!!!
Professor Frary was one of the best professors that I have taken a class with. He truly made class fun and interesting. The CEJ assignments were easy to follow and an amazing way to learn the material. Definitely recommend and would take a class with him again.
this class is extremely hard. it goes by very fast. the quizzes are really hard. if you are not good at history, you might fail.
his class has little to no structure. the quizzes are full of random things that we did not even go over or glossed over like once. his class is impossible.
I have taken Dr. Frary several times at Rider and I have always enjoyed his courses. He is clearly passionate about the subjects he teaches which makes learning more engaging. The assignments are always explained thoroughly beforehand and he is a pretty reasonable grader. I highly recommend it!!
Had Professor Frary online. We had a 10 multiple choice quiz every week on 3-4 chapters which was open-book, the textbook is required. Also you are given 2 discussion board questions and 3 current event papers with one final as a film review. Overall an easy class to complete on your own time. If you know key terms you will easily get an A.
Frary is a great professor, very passionate about his topic, and wanted to see you succeed. While I did have an issue with the way his midterms and finals are formatted (forces you to overstudy many different topics, when he could easily simplify it), he is a great charismatic guy. I never really read the chapters, just take good notes !
He was a great professor. His quizzes are not easy but as long as you really pay attention to his power points and extra articles he posts you should be fine. He has also current event journal papers and film review assignment and two discussion posts-all very interesting. He is a very good grader. He responds quickly if you have any questions.
This is a lecture class. Make sure you take notes in class or you will not do well. Study the maps when he assigns them. He tries to be funny and keep the material interesting. During the week of midterms I was very sick and he was very helpful and let me choose another time to take the exam. I'd take him again if I needed another history class.
Great Professor who wants you to do well and gives you the tools to do it.
I like Dr. Frary I like how he makes his lectures very interesting to keep us engaged with be taking his class again next semester so I would love to have him as a professor a very understanding professor
A little boring, but helpful, gives you everything you need to know for his tests, and answers any questions in person or over e-mail kindly. Clearly has a passion for what he's teaching.
No matter how hard you work to perfect your writings, he will always consider them a "draft" and harshly grade them. Quizzes are short, yet tough. Reading and paying attention to lectures is not enough to perfectly pass the quizzes.
Took him for both HIS 150/151 and this man was the best professor I have ever taken so far he gave an easy grade even tho his lecture can be a little boring but if he sees you put in the effort and the work then he will give you a good grade love having him as my professor
He was only one of the best professors that I have had at this university. I took him for both HIS 150 and 151. He was a very down-to-earth man and could easily help you. Honestly, if you just give 5% of your overall effort and attention in his class, you'll definitely pass. He was the reason I switched my major to History.
He is so clear in what is required of you and breaks down the material in a way that works well. While it is very dense material, he is able to break it down and relate time periods together to make it easier to comprehend.
Genuinely shocked how many positive reviews he has because everyone I've talked to (myself included) hates this man. He's one of those teachers who refuses to give above a certain grade just because. The class average is like a D. He can't teach.
good professor
one of my favorite classes, and professors at the school. Pay attention during the class, take notes, and study. The class isn't that hard, you just have to put in the effort.
I'm not a history fan at all, but this professor made me like it, very nice, he will answer all your questions and check your essay draft before the test.
I've never struggled in a history class before I took his class. You have to take notes in this class; otherwise, you'll fail. The two assignments that aren't tests or quizzes are graded harshly, and you probably won't receive more than a B on them. He's a nice guy, but I am not a fan of the way he teaches.
