Although it may be a lot of readings, you'll learn A LOT in this class. It's a great class to take instead of boring traditional history classes. You get to see the other side of the story that were never taught in history books because it was written predominately by the winners.
She is horrible horrible.. Has no idea what the heck she is doing or talking about. She should not be teaching at all! Very disorganized, forgetful, and totally out of her mind. Avoid at all costs.
Really interesting readings and topics. The class was a lot of fun! She is really nice, approachable, and always willing to help.
Lucia Chavez is a great teacher. I felt very comfortable talking with her. She is passionate about what she does and I definately recommend her. If you keep up on your readings, you'll do fine.
I enjoyed this class very much. Lucila really knows here stuff and she wants her students to succeed! She offers several interesting and worthwhile extra credit assignments.
Lots of work and lots of readings but an interesting course. Lucila is very helpful, takes time to explain material after class and over email. Good course.
Great Professor!!!!!!!!! Enjoyed every second of her class!!! Well Prepared and very helpful............ my favorite Chicano Studies teacher.
She is very very sweet and a really good teacher. Very organized, prepared, and knows the materail very well. Being bilingual and a chicana herself is clearly a plus for this class. I enjoy it a lot. Thanks Prof. Chavez!
One of the best Professor at CSUN. Trust me. If you fail her class, theres something wrong with you. She is so nice.
She is a great teacher!!! She knows her stuff and is extremely helpful!!She does not give too much work but does require you to complete certain assignments for the semester. :)
Attendance is MANDATORY! Missing multiple classes will keep you from getting an A. She's a great techer though, does a lot of group work. Just show up to class and you'll do really well.
Great professor!!!!!!!!!
Loads of fun!!!! But keeps the class interesting as well!!!
great professor! learned a lot. you will never get bored
She is a great lecturer and has a great personality. Not standoffish whatsoever and totally approachable with any questions! I learned a lot from her class. I didn't do all of her readings and I received an A! I recommend.
Wonderful professor! You will learn a lot in her class, but make sure to do your work. There is quite a bit of reading, writing, and group work, but she is very helpful and wants you to do your best. If you don?t miss class and take her class serious you will learn a great deal from her. I enjoyed her class immensely!
Take her class. Shes very sweet and understanding. A lot of group work involve but deninitly frienly and always welcoming
Great lectures, very clear! She is not only a good teacher but also very sweet. Loves to listen to opinions and comments so I would recommend this class if you like to speak up. I've learned a lot in her class and recommend it lots!
She's a good teacher, gives a decent amount of homework that will keep you busy. I would recommend her to a friend.
Good professor, just make sure to show up to class and do pay attention to powerpoints and you'll benefit from notes and timely reading, it's fun class, but the group oroject is somewhat heavy but we learn alot. Recommended!
Professor is great extremely helpful. No book, she uses a website as an electronic reader. Make sure you do your readings, she has quizzes every week. Professor Chavez replies to your emails almost instantly and is very flexible if you tell her your situation. I definitely recommend her! :D
Lucila is wonderful. She knows the material and is always on top of her work. She cares for students and is very approachable. If i could take her again i would.
AMAZING TEACHER! I absolutely loved Professor Chavez. She is extremely fair, very understanding, and funny. Her class assignments are very engaging and actually teach you something. Do your work and you will get a good grade, not that hard. Tests are papers you have to write. I left the class loving this subject. Definitely recommend her!
I would definitely recommend Prof.Chavez. she is a great teacher and very nice! Plus she makes the class interesting and fun. I loved this class.
Prof Chavez is amazing, she is willing to help you in any she can to get you to be successful in her class. Very easy and interesting. She even gives study guides and give out reading assignments as part of grade. Recommend! Very nice lady :)
Great class! You learn a lot and Professor Chavez is great. There is A LOT of work: weekly readings & quizzes, 3 exams, zine project, group presentation, and in class work but, it's worth it. TAKE IT! You'll learn :-)
Great professor! Really knows everything about the subject and I learned so much! Take notes and read articles (which are a lot sometimes which can be overwhelming) and the tests are fairly easy. Really loved the class. She just would take a couple weeks to return tests or projects which wasn't a huge deal. But she is very nice and helpful.
Nice and helpful. Be in class if you need notes to study. Books are needed for quizzes and tests. It's not hard if you study and turn in papers, then you will have a grade you desire. Willing to explain just to clarify everything, understanding if you have troubles. Sometimes shows films. Recommended!!! Although the readings are somewhat a lot!
She is really knowledgabl, and totally clear wht she is talking about. She wants that everyone be successfull. you need to study for the class though.
She is a really great professor, She knows her stuff and goes out of her way to help the students. I honestly barely tried to do good in her class and i got a solid C. Im okay with it because it was my fault. but i would take her again. Shes what you call a good teacher.
Great Professor! Do your readings, go to class, do your work and you can easily pass with an A! Take her, she makes this class interesting and there is also a lot of group work. You must do the reading in order to pass!
She is a very knowledgeable and helpful professor; however, she assigns a lot of readings pages worth, and quizzes are a huge chunk of your grade. She takes a long time returning grades, projects, and quizzes back to her students. Take her if your a Chicano Studies major or some sort related. If its for a GED or an elective - good luck.
Very friendly professor. She remembers students names shockingly, despite having too many to count. She is very approachable and helpful. Class is very interesting, she keeps even a long class from being boring. She has a lot of classes and students so sometimes she gets behind on grading things. I would highly recommend this class.
So hard for a lower division class. About 40-60 pages of reading per week. Quiz every class. Can only miss one class or docked 5 points/class. 3 tests, 1 paper, 10 quizzes, Web media project. Go to class, take intense notes, READ, and do the 2 extra credit options or you will not pass.
The majority of students are young and very lazy at CSUN, there is nothing difficult about this class. In the real world you need to work, get use to it! She is a great teacher and makes it very interesting, it's a creative class on many levels, if you care about what you learn and choose to be a critical thinker.
She a really cool teacher. there is a lot of of reading, but the rest is just quizzes which are easy, then 3 exam and the final one is a take home. and there is only one paper and web project which are both easy. I got an A but I didn't miss one assignment or class.
This Professor, has allowed me to enjoy every single moment of her class! I had her this semester, and I learned a lot! There is a lot of reading, and quizzes, but it is worth it. She is always glad to help you out, and is always in a positive mood! I highly recommend her! If I can take her class again, I would! :)
Awesome! Tends to get sick often but she always makes up for it. Knows her stuff, is patient and available for when you need help. There is no textbook but there are MANY articles to read. Tests based on articles, lectures, and quizzes. Study those, ask questions, you'll be fine. Can be a tough test grader. One essay for the semester. Good luck!
Amazing professor!!! Super friendly...enjoyed her class even though I had it at 8 am on a Friday. Does online live reviews before examinations. Easy quiz. Yes..read! I still keep in touch with her. She's super attentive, helpful, generous, easy A.
Highly recommend the class and professor
She's a great professor, but she assigns an overwhelming amount of reading (40 pages min a week), and this is coming from a person who LOVES to read. The material isn't exactly interesting either.. Take that in mind when considering to enroll in her class.
She is a good professor and makes the class interesting and fun. She tries to help students and friendly. Definitely lots of reading and assignments include essay, presentation, quizzes and tests. Keep yourself together till the end of semester and you will be fine.
Professor Chavez is very knowledgeable about the history of the Americas. It's important to go to class because you will most likely miss something important! Copy down all the notes, they WILL be helpful for your exams. (you have three exams, last one is final). You will have a group presentation, and about 12 quizzes. READ & PAY ATTENTION.
History can be really boring depending in the professor, however Chaves is great. She is very clear and helpful. Her exams are based on study guides that she provides. The quizzes are great because they have 2 attempts and also provide a study class. Ive taken her class twice !
The class material was so interesting. I loved the lectures and the tests were fair and made up most of the grade. The professor was extremely kind and helpful. Learned a lot. Not much reading as most of the material was covered through lectures.
Really good professor. I wasn't looking forward to taking a CHS class, because I had no interest in the subject, just needed it for credit. However, she makes it interesting and is really knowledgable about the class. She is always willing to help, really good at responding to emails. Would definently recommend and take again.
Fairly easy class the only hard thing was the group project at the end.
Probably the best professor I will ever have at CSUN. She's amazing. The class itself was very interesting, her personality is amazing. Be ready to read!
Professor Chaves is Awesome! I as not very interested in history before I took this class. She makes her lectures clear and sometimes even fun. There is a lot of work but if you go to class you should be fine. Great Teacher!
Breakdown: Lectures, assigns online quizzes (12 of them) weekly in order for you to do the reading. READ READ READ! Network with students to help break down the study guide for quizzes and exams. 2 exams based on lecture notes, final on readings. Final was online and you have two attempts for Part 1 (Multiple choice). Zine project and group project
Be ready to read about 50 pages a week and take weekly quizzes. Grades very fairly and be prepared to work with other students by the end of the semester for the group presentation. Very knowledgeable on the subject and she likes to use a combination films, readings and power points in her lectures.
Great class! She is the best Chicano Studies professor Ive had! Her lectures are great and she also shows films and makes you do group work during class. Online quiz every week. 3 exams. Everything is very easy because she is very helpful!! Final group project.
Such an amazing professor! She kept her lectures interesting enough and kept it tied to the readings as well. Had to read several books throughout the semester but with the weekly quizzes and study guides, each quiz and exam was passable. FOCUS on the readings and lectures! Every question is answered at least once in class.
quizes are timed, she only gives you about 15 min,Two tries, after the first attempt is done, she dosent let you review them until the second try is done. Only thing i dont like about this professor is she only gives 1 or 2 extra credit. she takes forever to grade, like an essay took her 2 months . Her lectures are interesting though. Study for test
She is the greatest! Very passionate about what she teaches . print notes that she post online! if you miss one day of class you miss a lot. easy class. 3 exams, last exam is online. she does offer extra credit too
ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS IN CSUN, HAND DOWN! she literally cares about her students, intelligent, and knows what she's talking about. 3 tests, one project at the end of the semester, and a lot of extra credits. I was in her Friday class, 3 hours, I never felt boring during her lecture, she kept it interesting. HIGHELY RECOMMEND, thank me later.
Professor Chavez is literally one of the best professors at CSUN no joke. Every lecture was the best, never boring. 3 tests one paper... She cares about her students and is so passionate about the subject. Please take Prof Chavez
This class was so interesting and I highly recommend. You can tell this professor has command over the material and knows what she's talking about. She cares if she students are learning the material too.
Lucila is a great professor and gives awesome lectures but she can improve with providing students with feedback on papers and quizzes. She's a tough grader and is super super specific. Weekly quizzes based on heavy readings, two papers, a presentation and three exams. It's a great class but it's not the easiest. Subtracts points for absences.
She's a very nice and fun professor. Her class isn't hard but their are weekly readings and online quizzes so get ready to read. Her midterms are easy if you do all the work and show up to her lectures. She also gives out extra credit opportunities and absent makeups toward the end of the semester.
The most caring professor I've ever met. I only had her for Friday's, but she always makes sure my class had everything we needed. Exams are half online and half in class, so the multiple choice is online, and the essay part is in class. There's some group projects and she offers extra credit towards the end of the course. I highly recommend her!!!
The class itself was super easy since you only need to do 5 out of the 12 discussions and complete 10 out of the 12 quizzes. We only had 3 exams and 1 essay. Biggest downfall is she never responds to emails and doesn't grade anything in a timely manner which is super annoying since you don't really know your grade without it. Otherwise super easy.
(I took this during covid time)The class is very easy. You just read the reading for the week and then do a discussion and a quiz. She gives 2 attempts for the quizzes so its pretty easy to get an A on them. Shes lowkey a procrastinator tho. For a few weeks she just didnt post the assignments but Im not complaining lol. Recommend if ur online.
Ngl she would go a few weeks of not posting anything on canvas and would upload late. Lots of reading and then there would be a quiz of one of the readings weekly but they are easier than they seem. She is really nice and wants to help her students. Although the readings could be much and exhausting there were actually some interesting topics.
She's super nice, you do have to a good amount of reading to answer the discussion homework that are given but you only have to complete 5 of the 12 assigned. The readings are interesting, probably the class that I learned from the most last semester.
Prof. Chavez is very nice. She likes students to participate in class and speak out. Her grading system is very clear, you have 12 discussions but you only have to complete 5. There are extra credit opportunities and her lectures are very entertaining. Amazing professor, I would recommend a 100%
Weekly quizzes + discussions based on readings. Some readings are long but the information is clear. 3 Tests multiple choice and short answer. Short answer part could work on and submit within time frame. Oral presentation at end of course + 1 essay. She is really nice + clear information. Enjoyable class I learned a lot. Takes attendance.
Worst Professor. unorganized and unprofessional in so many ways. Would go MIA randomly then come back and drop two discussions and two quizzes do by the end of the week with no warning. Would not answer emails at all and when she would it wouldn't help us in any way at all.
Don't take. She's really unorganized, always cancels class, never grades assignments, and broken canvas modules. 10 quizzes, 5 discussions, 3 Exams, 1 essay, and graded on attendance. Definitely a busy class and I have no idea what my grade is because the only things that are graded are the online quizzes.
Do NOT take. Very unorganized. Does NOT answer emails. Have to do 5 discussions out of 10, 9 quizzes out of 11, and 3 exams 2 parts each. Only thing that gets graded is the quizzes and nothing else. Probably one of the worst professors Ive had & super stressful.
This class wasn't terrible, but yeah she's very unorganized and cancels class at the last minute. Easy A class, but you should be ready to put a lot of time into reading and writing for this class. Everything was graded at the end but most of it was full credit.
If you can avoid this professor, do so. The worst professor at csun. She never responded to emails and gave vague instructions. There was an email where Professor Chavez announced the date and time for a zoom, she never attended and the next day said " I'm on zoom right now, join". What professor would do that? She gave a whole unannounced lecture.
This Professor grades assignments very last minute. Especially written assignments. They will wait until finals weeks to grade Exams from months before. This does not allow students room for improvement.
Her online class is very organized and easy to follow. The issue is that the semester is almost over and she hasn't graded a single thing. The only grades uploaded are the automatic ones from after you take an online quiz. It's kind of difficult to know how you're doing in the class when your professor doesn't grade anything.
Professor Chavez explained the material very thoroughly and helped me understand all the important concepts. Her lectures were very informative and I enjoyed all the assignments we had to work on because it allowed me to look at this topic from a new lens. The way she structured the course didn't feel overwhelming.
Professor Chavez is an amazing person, takes the time to explain concepts and is very encouraging. She connects well with students and humors us at every chance she gets. She is also understanding towards her students and acknowledges how stressful we can get with school and our personal life.
Amazing prof. Tests consist of essay questions that are extensively covered in lecture and reading. She has weekly readings and quizzes to show you have read. Grade consists of quizzes, exams (3), and a project. Her lectures are very interesting and you can tell she really cares about students learning.
She was a nice professor. Just a lot of work for a GE class. I will say the work is pretty easy. Each week you have a reading, a quiz, and maybe a film to watch and take notes on. There is also a project that she assigns at the beginning of the semester. You have three exams throughout the semester which can be time-consuming. Offers extra credit!
I loved this class! We discussed so many critical issues about Chicanas. Professor Chavez is very knowledgeable and engaging. I highly recommend this class!
The absolute worst teacher I have ever had. Nothing was graded on time and when they were graded good luck on the result even though you studied and put thought into your work. The absolute worst professor ever. Trust me when I tell you to pick any other teacher for this subject. Good luck to you if you have to take her.
This is one of the courses I have enjoyed the most at CSUN. The readings are interesting and I loved the lectures and discussions. Professor Chavez is kind and caring.
The professor was given our class halfway through the semester. She was kind and understanding and helped us get through the semester. I loved her lectures and learned a lot about Chicanos and language and reproductive rights.
She made learning so interesting and helped shape the classroom into a safe/friendly space :) I truly enjoyed her lectures and all her exams were very easy. Exams were based on lectures and documentaries, and she always gave a study guide to prepare. She is very kind and offers a lot of extra credit opportunities. Notes are key!
Professor Chavez's history of the Americas class was interesting. I enjoyed her lectures and discussions, and the topics were eye-opening. She is kind, patient, and supportive. I look forward to taking another course with professor Chavez.
Great lectures and interesting class discussions! She wants you to understand the material and wants to hear your input.
Professor Chavez is a very kind professor who cares about her students.
Honestly, this class was easy but my only complaints are that she doesn't grade promptly. I had to email her to ask for my work to be graded. And 3 weeks after the semester, I still have work that hasn't been graded on canvas. There are also many students turning in late discussion posts, don't be one of those and turn in your work on time!
Don't take this professor. This year she used AI detectors for every single assignment and falsely accused half the class for using AI. Basically if you write at a normal college level and don't have any errors in your writing she's going to give you a 0 the last 3 weeks of school ending. She punishes students who are actually good writer.
This professor's lectures are interesting and she is patient. There is a lot of reading but her study guides are helpful. I like that she breaks up the class project to make it easier to get through.
Heavy reading but this class was fairly easy. My main problem was that she didn't grade anything until 3 weeks before the semester ending and if you had any issues or questions about grades it was stressful having to email her about during busy finals week. She's a understanding professor but it was stressful not getting any feedback until very end
This was my favorite class! Profesora Chavez is very nice and passionate about the subject. The work was not difficult because she provided support all semester (10 quizzes, 2 exams, 1 project).
Overall, I like the pace of this class and the benchmarks for the oral history project. I think its great for individuals who have busy schedules, and the instructions are clear. This class has opened my eyes and made me realize that organization is crucial to not falling behind!
I am enrolled in Lucila's history of Mexico class. I didn't expect to learn about the African presence in Mexico or women in the Mexican Revolution. Her lectures have been interesting so far. She is also patient and caring in class and office hours.
Kind professor and interesting class!
(Chicano 008). I took her for a 5-week summer course and the class is pretty straightforward; your grade is mostly impacted by the quizzes (13 total), exams (2), and a final presentation video. I recommend keeping your mini-essays as short as possible as the video presentation has a 5 min limit. This class was very manageable, just prepare to read.
