Lots, and lots, and LOTS of writing. She expects at least 3 drafts of each essay. Really ,really uptight about attendance and punctuality, with punishments for being late or absent.
I felt that this is one of the worst english teachers I have had. She tries to be very tough. The way she grades is quite confusing and she was very unclear on how she graded till it was too late.
If you do what she asks, you will learn a lot. Very anal about attendance.
Oh God... All your gonna write about is about California! Think it's easy?.. Ha! She's such a hard grader..but hey if you really need her then take it..but I suggest..someone else.
A lot of essay writing, but the workshops are helpful and you pick up some good tips. But there are easier Eng 1 teachers. She's very strict and picky.
I have always been great at English, until I got Lucille as a teacher. It seems easy to write only about CA, but at the end of the semester and 548 essays and drafts, you hate it and it becomes so repetitive. The only good thing is that she's funny.
Maybe she'd like teaching high school better, because she read to us outloud in class and takes attendance; two things I thought I'd get rid of after leaving high school. She's nice, but class is sort of boring.
SHe's really helpful and I think she really knows and loves the material. I highly recomend her for English 43!
Well I thought Sutton was a great English professor really knew about the subject material and myself coming all the way from Michigan she was the best!!
My experience in her class was one to remember. I have never been to a class where the instructor was strict and in my mind played favoritism towards certain. Hard to believe that I got B's on my essays and still ended up with a low C and when people where getting D's and they passed with B's.

Ugh! this teacher was both a pain in my butt and very helpful she takes it to an all new level sometimes she's being a witch and then she gives you the best advice I didn't enjoy her but her class was helpful
I thought she was pretty chill, American Lit was a great class - interesting books too....shes pretty critical on the writing though but i feel im a better writer after her class
she expects you're writing abilites to be too high. she tends to not explain everything and then gets mad when you ask questions. interupts discussion too much.

i thought it was an easy class. if you dont understand what your reading she breaks it down almost page for page in class teachings and discussions. go for help with your writings before due and she can help
loved the class. its hard but you learn so much about literary analysis. im a psych major and this american lit class will help me with that.
Don't miss class! She requires you to be there and on time. We read a small book and quizzes were given. We did a lot of group work and lots of written work. It is not an easy class, so don't expect to walk out with an A if you don't put in the hard work. A's are rare in this class. She's cool and easy to talk to, when you need help.
need to attend class...you learn progressively...
This is class requires a lot of writing, but basically summaries about your reading. She is a great instructor! Very funny, caring and engaging. Loved this class. (Show up, strict about attendance)
She is a very hard teacher. She is an extremely hard grader and if you dont do the homework then you might as well drop the class because you will never be able to make it up
The class is easy, you just have to do the work... and there is a lot of it. You are only allowed to miss two days... I would suggest taking it for a semester instead of a language for a year lol.
She's not bad, but you are gonna have to work. Be prepared to write a LOT. Also read the books, and you'll be fine. Other than that, not a bad class.
lots of writing...difficult grader...take a writing class n she will give extra credit...couldnt stop lookn at her a**...what can i say it isnt that bad...
Awesome Teacher! Very ineresting class! A lot of work but worth it!
she is always there to help you and she will explain her assignments as thouroughly as you need them to be explained. she is very nice! a lot of work, reading, and writing but its worth it!
This was a pretty cool class. She is very helpful and gives a lot of time to come talk to her about your writing. as long as you do your work and turn it in on time youll be fine. This class is a lot of work!..but its not too hard.
She helps you out throughout the whole semester. This class is easy but just a lot of work. You don't really write a lot of essays in my opinion and I hate writing essays. If you just go to class and do all the work by the deadlines, you'll end up with a good grade. I would recommend this teacher.
If you DONT LIKE English, this class IS FOR YOU! Shes the best! English is my worst subject, but got an A! Great teacher; excellent at explaining & I learned a lot & became a better writer! Ive always been terrible at writing & struggled with it, but she made it a breeze! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
She is amazing. She really helps you develop your writing. The class isn't hard. It just has a lot of work and she grades super hard so even if you do all the work but its done poorly your grade will suffer. She's an amazing helper. Always there if you need her. We never took one test all focus was on our project due at the end of the semester.
Worst English teacher I had....
Worst teacher I had
She is great at actually meeting with students to go over their work! but she does grade kind of hard, so write CAREFULLY!!! and make sure you follow the guidelines exactly!!
She is extremely organized and likes to stick to her schedule. She is a very hard grader, but she will tell you what you need to improve in your essay if you go and talk to her.
Sutton is a good professor. She gives quite a lot of work, she grades a little tough, and doesn't accept late work without a valid reason of why the work is late. But she explains topics well, she give guidelines on how papers should be, and she is easy to understand. Be sure to print the syllabus because she is always on point.
She is extremely strict, Grades SUPER HARD, and wants everything perfect. However she does provide clear and organized guidelines, rubrics, etc. Very puctual, do not be late!
Also, she grades VERY realistically.
I improved on my writing extremely in this class. She may appear taunting at first but she greatly provides herself as a great resource for help. She also has a no-nonsense attitude but likes creativity and participation. Do your homework b/c she will notice. Put effort to your essays in the very beginning to get a good grade in final portfolio.
A very particular teacher, mostly because she wants the class to understand the arguments we are trying to persuade her of in our essays. Essays are very specific, but doable. We will use nonfiction novels way more than the "Writing Analytically" textbook. More than willingly to go over work with you, but it's all on you to take initiative.
This teacher was by far the hardest grading teacher I've ever taken. She is extremely rude and has no type of personality. Attendance is mandatory and you will fail if you are absent or late too many times. I DO NOT recommend this teacher at all.
She is strict but also helpful. I had the basics of English before I took the class, and now I am able to more intelligently put my ideas together. I highly recommend her. Also, If you do the work, follow the technical guidelines to a fault, and take the help she offers you will pass.
Neutral feeling towards this teacher, super chill vibes but tough. ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT!! Grading is tough SO DO YOUR HOMEWORK SHE TAKES NOTES ON EVERYTHING. Class isn't hard at all, just show up to class and do your work and the semester will flow by in a blink. Advice : DON'T PROCRASTINATE IN THIS CLASS.
She is a great teacher. Attendance is mandatory. As long as you do your homework and revise every essay you will get a good grade in the class. There is neither test nor quizzes. She offers extra credit at the end of the semester. If you want to improve your writing you should defiantly take her class.
This class requires work, you have to work for your grade. Attendance is mandatory. She grades very fairly, is very helpful, and tries to make sure everyone is on the same page. She is very picky, you MUST follow her guidelines or you will be docked points. Not too hard if you are willing to put in work.
Professor is a REALLY HARD grader. She knows what she is doing though, and is passionate about her job. You really have to work for your grade. You MUST be willing to work hard.
Very hard grader and does not stick to what she tells you. She grades depending on her mood, and she doesn't grade like she tells you she will. be prepared to fail if shes not in a good mood.
Very hard grader. Really hard to get an A in this class. She helps you a lot but such a challenging class.
Sutton is a very cool lady and is obviously passionate about her job. If you are not a solid writer, a procrastinator, or you skip class regularly, SHE IS NOT FOR YOU. She's a very hard grader and doesn't allow for many absences. She's very helpful and clear. If you work hard, you'll pass. Probably not with an A+, but you'll pass.
The textbook isn't required, only for an extra credit assignment she offers towards the end of the semester. She is a pretty hard grader. 93-100% is considered an A. I received a 91% before turning in my final portfolio and completing the maximum points of extra credit and ended up with the exact same percentage at the end of the semester.
The textbook isn't used at all throughout the semester, only for an extra credit assignment she offers. 93-100% is considered an A. Before turning in my final portfolio and the maximum points of extra credit I had a 91% in the class and after completing just that I ended up with the exact same percentage as my final semester grade.
She assigns a lot of work. If you're a slacker, do not take this class. She requires group discussions and class participation is mandatory. However, it's always interesting. If you are seeking to learn, this is the class for you. She assigns three main essays but they are so fun to write. She makes you go out of your comfort zone. She cares.
She'll assign 3 major essays and an end of the semester essay. In the classroom, it's fairly easy if you've done your reading, which is some chapters out of a book called The American Way of Eating (not the textbook). The grading is C 73-82%, B 83- 92%, and an A is 93-100%, which I didn't like, but it's up to you. And she'll give out extra credit.
Do you enjoy writing about food and nothing else? If so this class is for you. However if you prefer a more relaxed environment where you can write about what you want avoid this class at all costs.
I took her class my 1st semester of college. She helped shape me up for what I had coming. She was the toughest English teacher I've had so far but definitely the best because she taught us how to produce well written essays. Its crucial that you stay on top of things and strongly consider her critiques. If you want a challenge take her class!
If you want to write all semester long about food then go for it ,but I would 100% never take her again. Have three main assignments which is the final portfolio if you fail that then you fail the whole class.
If you are looking to spend the whole semester writing non stop then this is the class for you. Very tough grader but very specific on what she is grading for. Reads every paper all the way through so you can say she is committed. If you have a chance to take the class with someone else I HIGHLY encourage it.
If you enjoy reading and doing assignments on Roller Derby for the rest of the semester, feel free to take this class. Also, she gives homework everyday, and there are so many writing assignments. If you have the chance to take eng10 with another professor, i strongly recommend you do so.
Probably My Favorite Class. I Got To See What Type Of Writer I Really Am. Tough Grader, But Very Helpful. I Recommend That You Abuse Her Office Hours & Abuse The Writing Center. Very Helpful Sources. No Books (Don't Waste Your Money). I Recommend You Take Her Class.
She is a wonderful professor! There are no exams or timed writing assignments. You will have two essay, 1 final essay, and a final portfolio. You must show up to class, be prepared to participate, and you are required to go to the writing center ate least twice. She is clear about what is expected out of you and is very helpful to students.
Wouldn't take if you don't like reading and writing. Tons of homework. Very strict of expectations and doesn't really give back feedback. Quality over quantity.
Ms. Sutton is an awesome professor. She cares about her students and makes sure everyone is on the same page as her. Take advantage of her office hours, she is very helpful and gives good feedback. There is only a total of 3 essays and a final portfolio. She is a tough grader, but offers several extra credit opportunities. Great class overall!
There are lots of assignments, but they're pretty easy. 3 big essays. The essays are about yourself so you don't have to read a boring novel or anything. Straightforward, listen to her feedback and you should be fine.
Prof. Sutton is great! I won't say the class is just super easy, but as long as you stay on top of everything you'll be fine. She is very strict on grading, points WILL be deducted for formatting errors etc.. overall, it's a pretty straight forward class.
This class was super hard if you are not an experienced writer. That being said there seems to be a lot of busy work. Lots of papers to write, most the time there is at least a page typed single space due. Three major essays. She knows what she wants, so just listen.
English 10 is a writing class so we wrote probably 10 papers. She is very dry and serious. Class was boring and we did a lot of writing. she is a tough grader! Marks down points for the margins on your paper.
She's a nice professor overall, but the writings are a little too much, however, they do help on the drafts. I would just say.... If you're not ready to write a lot on the first year, don't take this professor. But, she does give good feedback, about a page at least. It's just that the writings gets in the way of my other works.
She's a nice professor but hard grader, if there's not enough detail into your writing, better pray that you'll pass. Essays are right after each other, so many writing prompts along with reading prompts, if your paper is not 1-inch margin or your header she'll take off points. If you fail final portfolio you fail the class no matter your grade.
She is direct with what she wants from you. Gives great feedback. We have 3 essays total but each have a 1st, 2nd, and final draft. Tough grader and will mark off points for the slightest mistake. She has conferences with you that everyone has to participate in which really helps. If you do what you need to do and try, you will get a good grade
She gave good feedback and really cares about her students
She is more concerned with you tardies and attendance and deadlines that you learning. She makes you print out everything and every essay has 3 drafts. Ridiculously strict about attendance she sets a timer and after 10 minutes its an absence. Makes you buy the book but I didnt even take it out the packaging.
Gives good feedback but is super particular in MLA format and marks you down for every and any little mistake.
She's definitely a good person, but if you're looking for a chill class don't do this to yourself. Maybe you just want the credit for the course, I wouldn't take it with her. She's a very caring professor, her feedback is great. The work is just really tedious. It's a class you should only take if you want to invest time into each assignment.
She is strict with what she wants, there is lots of homework I regret taking this class.
She's is a good professor; she's just really tough with her grading. Checked for any and every little MLA mistake. Attendance matters a lot. Unless you want to challenge yourself, don't take her. There are easier English professors out there.
Good teacher, but super strict and does assign a lot of unnecessary homework. However my writing skills have become better.
Avoid her if you can. She grades insanely on papers. Takes off points for every mistake. She has a timer every day if you show up 5 min. late, its an absence. You only get 3 absences. If you don't pass final portfolio, you fail no matter what you have on classwork.
She's a good professor to have. You may have a lot of homework at times, but she gives you a good amount of time to do the work. One of the nicest professors out there who really focuses on improving you academic skills. Grading may be "tough", but you only get a quarter point deduction for all your MLA format mistakes, not for each one.
Prof. Sutton is a caring and reasonable professor. She assigns many assignments and are usually worth only 4 points; Easy but repetitive. Throughout the course, you work on the same essays plus revisions. There are two major essays and a reflection essay. MAKE SURE TO DO GOOD ON THOSE. Your grade heavily depends on those last three final papers.
Though she has strict grading on the assignments, she is easy to talk to and quite understanding. If you're an English major, you should have no trouble keeping up with her work. Seems like a lot, but it's fairly easy. Don't be late, don't miss class, do all the assignments. Easy A.
For the most part, this class was entirely self taught. We are only graded on the assigned reading, tests, and discussion boards. What was irritating was that the text book is required, but she makes you buy it from a third part seller instead of requesting it for the bookstore. Be prepared to read and talk about what you read. Have them ready.
Be ready to read a lot! But overall, if you can keep up with the workload, she's very inspiring and very clear on her grading criteria. No late work accepted. I hate group discussions because of anxiety but she makes them very engaging, and the texts that she chooses are interesting. I wouldn't say the class is hard, but rather a lot of work.
Overall, pretty great professor. LOTS of reading/response for this class, if you don't make time to read and write, you probably won't do so well. Tests and quizzes are very doable (online and on your own time). ATTENDANCE IS GRADED. Don't slack on the writing assignments (4 total), she's a very tough grader and is looking for the prompt criteria.
Very strict about MLA criteria on papers. Does not give feedback on papers so you don't know what you did wrong. This class was very discussion-heavy. Does offer extra credit at the end of the semester which was beneficial.
She has a passion for reading and is a decent teacher. She doesn't give good feedback on writing assignments, which is frustrating. Still, she does seem to care about her class. You can tell who she doesn't like, but as long as you are respectful you'll be fine. Also, attendance is worth 15% of your grade
Don't choose her if want to spend every night writing. She is a tough grader so she will doc out points if she doesn't understand where you are coming from and wants you to write what she wants so make sure you ask what she wants to see in your writing whenever you can go to office hours.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!! She is an absolute b and doesn't care about the circumstances or traffic or accidents. Even if you're so sick, she does NOT care. I had to show up to class with the stomach flu, or my grade would tank for attendance.
She is an okay professor. All the tests and quizzes are online. I suggest doing the extra credit and showing up to class because attendance is part of your grade. She is kind of boring and can be rude especially if you are on your phone. Essay was graded harshly and the rubric is not that descriptive.
Great professor. As long as you go to class, participate accordingly, and read her material, you'll have an easy time. Getting sick or getting into an accident might suck since points are partially dependent on attendance. But she needs to be fair. She offers extra credit and fun readings. Great class and better professor.
Honestly one of my favorite professors. The class was well-structured and there IS a lot of reading but she does a good job of providing interesting material. As long as you do the readings, come to class, and turn things in on time you should pass with an A. Class is in-person but exams are taken online.
This professor assigns a TON!!!! of homework. Her class is mandatory and she will call you out even if it's an emergency. Her lectures feel very slow and are boring.
This is a pretty difficult class. You definitely need to do your reading and make sure you annotate basically everything. Attendance is very important to her. She will mark you absent even if you leave 5 minutes early. That brings down your grade. She doesn't care if you have to leave for a family emergency. She can be a bit rude and very blunt.
