This professor ruins film for everyone. She gives students enormous reading assignments (as in 1/2 of a text book), and then never mentions or tests on the information. Her assignments are vague "so as to not limit your creativity," but her expectations are extremely rigid and narrow. She also doesn't give any grades until the end of the semester.
Professor Lucy made this course both a challenge and a lot of fun. She gave us ample guidance and encouraged us to be creative. She balanced her lectures with practical work, encouraged participation and gave each of us her full attention. She gave clear guidelines and objective feedback on our scripts. Highly recommend Prof Lucy!
Prof. Lucy was great! She knows a lot about film and you can learn a lot from her. She is flexible if you do the work and attend class. I was able to write a short script, break it down, do a budget, do a shooting script and now ready to shoot it! I recommend her highly especially if you want to get into film.
Be forewarned- unlike most of the other professors at Nova, she treats this like a college-level class, and thus expects you to do your work. She'll push you and challenge you to further develop your skills. This class is a LOT of work, but definitely worth taking if you're interested in pursuing a career in film!
A fun class! the only class I looked forward to attending every week. learned a lot.
Professor Lucy is passionate about film and makes learning easy. I did not have any script writing experience. She walked us through different steps and made it easy. I came out of this class with a script! At the end of class she brought acting students to do a read through of our scripts, it was an awesome experience! Loved this class!
I found Professor Lucy to be fair and fun, but make no mistake, she expects college-level students to behalf as such. There was no textbook, yet she provided students with internet links for reading assignments. She really wants students to get the most out of the class, and if you are interested in film, what she asks for shouldn't be that hard!
She is the best!!!! We enjoyed a lot of acting in her class. Being in her class makes you realize the actor that is hidden within you which you yourself don't know about until you take her class. The class is very easy, keep up with the quizzes, Theatre reports that are due and come to class you will surely get an A. She gives lots of extra credit.
Good Teacher.
Awesome class! Was very enjoyable and educational. You have to keep up with your assignments, if you do that and and are open to trying new things and participate, you will do jusg fine. plenty of extra credit. Pr. Lucy is an excellent teacher and brings out in you what you didn't think you had. I would take this class again and again if I could!
Professor Lucy! Is the best teacher in THE ALEXANDRIA CAMPUS! She always knows how to encourage students, make them strive for the best, and has patience. I highly recommend her to any student that would like to take CST seriously! :) the class environment, classmates, teacher.. Everything is chill&relax! Love the class and professor Lucy!
This was the funnest class I ever took! I learned a lot about the theater and acting. I wish all my classes were this much fun! Professor Lucy is fun and makes the class interesting. Loved the class loved the teacher. If you show up in class and participate in acting exercises easy A. she gives extra credit chances.
I hesitated to take this class since I never wrote a script before in my life. I am so glad I took it! Professor Lucy makes it so easy to learn to write! I now have a script and the best part, I know how to write scripts. Will definitely take more classes with Professor Lucy. She makes learning fun and she's funny :)
By far the best screenwriting class I have had. I took one before this one and didn't get much out of it. Professor Lucy knows her stuff. She broke down the steps in a way that made it easy for us to write our script by the end of class. She also had her acting students come and read our scripts.Totally recommend this class.
I took this class cause it was an elective. And I love movies. I had no idea there was so much to it. Prof Lucy knows her stuff! She is so passionate about movie making that she makes you excited about it. She is so cool! I recommend this class. I wish I could take it again :)
Very informative and interesting class. Just don't get on Lucy's bad side and you will do fine; if you haven't watched a mandatory movie at the very least look up a synopsis so you don't look like a fool in front of her and everyone. Lucy is very willing to help you out if you speak to her with realistic expectations.
This class is awesome. The teacher is very knowledgeable and truly interested in sharing her skills with students. She is very straight forward and to the point. You will learn soo much its not even funny... the text book is cheap and pretty interesting read.
This was a great class, Professor Lucy is very funny and entertaining. Though the initial syllabus had more things planned that I wish we could have done, the 8 week course schedule did not allow it. All in all I enjoyed the class and the ability to get some acting exposure!
Loved the movies we watched in this class. No text book but lots of online resources posted on blackboard. You have to love movies to enjoy this class; you have to watch lots of them and discuss them. Learned a lot! Great class!
the funnest class I had at NOVA! learned a lot about film directing and had fun also. our group project was to direct a music video for the song Happy. not crazy about the song but shooting the video was a lot of fun! wish it was longer than 8 weeks. prof lucy made the class a lot of fun!
Great class! I already had an interest in film, and this course just topped it all off for me. Prof Lucy made the class very interesting and what I enjoyed most was the freedom of expression. Attendance is mandatory, and checking Bb is a must. If you follow the syllabus, and come to class on a regular, there's absolutely no way not to pass!
Professor Lucy was great all around. This is my 2nd "go-round" at college. She is easily one of the best educators I've had at any level.
Lucy. One of the chillest and knowledgeable professors in NVCC. Just do your work and an A is very possible. Plus, she's funny.
I Love This Woman! I thought this was going to be an easy A but I received so much more. Prof. Lucy is very honest yet respectful and has the capability of bringing out the best in her students. The most enjoyable part about being in this class was the opportunity to share the same space with an artistic genius! I would recommend any class of hers!
Im a movie buff! I thought I knew all there is to know about movies until I took this class. I learned so much. Prof. Lucy is very knowledgeable about film and makes sure her students get it. Got to watch a lot of movies I never heard of and actually enjoyed! Keep up with the films and discussion boards and youll do just fine. Loved it!
Professor Lucy is an amazing teacher. She has a passion for film and her teaching shows it. If you want to grow as a creative writer, I suggest you take her class. Do your homework, show up for class, and most importantly GET HER FEEDBACK! It's great.
Prof. Lucy knows her stuff. She knows what makes a good script and what doesn't. She knows how to create a good and effective plot that will keep your readerviewer hooked. She also knows the business and will share the rigid and not-so-fun stuff that goings on inside it. If you want to learn, have fun, laugh, etc, take this class! Trust me. Do it.
Prof Lucy is one of the most compassionate professors I've come across. She's very passionate about film and the arts. She is extremely knowledgable and is good at incorporating real world events into the class room setting. I recommend this class for those who really are interested in film.
Prof Lucy's passion for film really shows in the way she makes you interested in the material. There is no book, but she provides you all the information you need to pass with flying colors. Showing up for class and participating gaurantees you a good gread. She is there for her students and is very reasonable. Looking forward to II.
Professor Lucy is the best. She cares about her students, loves the subject she teaches, and makes students eager to learn. Taking The Art of Film class was incredible! You will learn a lot about the birth of film making. Best part is it transfers to a VCU film school! You won't regret taking this class. Attendance& Participation is a MUST!
only offered as an 8 week class. show up and do the required homework every week and you will pass with an A. she gives you about 4 days to turn in the homework and the homework is watching a film and answering the questions. this is a film class so you will watch a film almost every class but there is a lecture first. AMAZING CLASS. Need Netflix!
EASY A if you participate and do the homework! you don't need a textbook but will need a Netflix or Amazon account to watch the films for homework. short lecture and then you watch a film in class every week. great teacher, respects everyone, easy class to talk about films and you opinion! TAKE THIS FOR A GENERAL ELECTIVE CLASS!
Took Lucy for CST 151 (film appreciation) As i am a working adult with a full time job, attending every class was not really an option. this will greatly affect your grade. so unless you have 3 hrs to sit and watch a foreign film each week, i would not take this class. extensive discussion board posts (3X) each week.
Prof. Lucy is the most human Professor I had. She makes class interesting. You can share your opinion freely. I learned a lot about film from this class. I am planning on taking Film Appreciation II with her next semester. She makes learning fun!
She was a good teacher; very passionate for what she is doing. Well, i come from IT major but i love films. She actually made me more interested in film making. she is funny and gives extra credit for activities she will call you for. Beware and read the syllabus. She puts many deadlines there and does not talk about deadlines in the class.
Loved this class. Loved Professor Lucy. Loved that there is no text book!
If you enjoy watching movies, then Professor Lucy's class will take you on a journey you've never imagined when it comes to movie making. You'll never watch a film the way you once have before. You'll actually appreciate what it takes to make a movie. You'll get to watch incredible films in class & for hw. Best class @ Nova!
If there's any professor at NOVA I would recommend, it would be Professor Lucy. She is amazing, she teaches concepts that you would think would be rather difficult and makes them enjoyable, she genuinely cares and communicates with her students, and best of all, she actually knows what she's talking about. Take her class, I promise you'll love it!
The best class I took at NOVA! Learned a lot about film as an art form. lots of movies to watch and discussion boards. no text books but a lot of online resources posted on blackboard. fair grader. Prof. Lucy made it fun.
She is not only a great teacher; she is a true friend and amazing person inside also. She knows a lot about movies and it was an honor for me being in her class. She is inspirational. Just attend all her classes, be on time, follow the way that she wants you to do, and you will get an A easily. I'm going to take another class with her.
She's a GREAT teacher! She knows a lot about film and is also a filmmaker so she will give you great insight. Her class is an easy A---just show up, take notes and do the hw. I'm taking her next semester. I highly recommend her to anyone.
Professor Lucy is one of the greatest professors at the college. She is very professional and knows her stuff. I love old films, and was never bored at her lectures. You do need access to Netflix or Hulu (preferably Hulu, because some movies weren't on Netflix, but all were ln Hulu), no textbook, and easy class if you do the homework! TAKE HER!
Professor Lucy is one of the best at NVCC. She really cares about her students and extremely passionate about movies. Initially I took this class for a humanities requirement, but I learned SO much. I'll never look at movies the same again. Wonderful teacher who I would love to have again. She is inspirational.
Awesome class but this was the hardest elective I've taken. Luckily, I enjoy film and enjoyed the extra work but I wouldn't take this if you're looking for an easy A. She has very strict rules, follow them and you will pass, try to take shortcuts and you'll pay for it. Also gives out plenty of extra credit. Learned a lot about film from her.
Professor Lucy Gebre-Egziabher is an exceptionally talented educator who is dedicated to her students. Enthused and energetic. Classes are very interesting and fun - great discussions about films. Tests have no trick questions. No textbook required - lecture and online readings only. All her students love her - you will, too!
Prof Lucy was ok, but the class wasn't nearly as enjoyable as I thought it would be. Lots of discussion boards where you have to reply to your peers (I HATE that) plus a group project that I really didn't enjoy at all. Still easy class though with lots of extra credit. Got a D on that group project, still came out of class with an A overall.
Professor Lucy is an amazing professor and person; however make sure you do the discussion board questions correctly and she is a very tough grader! I didn't even pass the class. :(
Prof Lucy is a very nice person. She is passionate about the subject. She is a caring life coach. She teaches in an old schooled way, and you don't want to mess up with her on that. There are many things to write, but not a hard grader as long as you do them. Generally, easy.
Professor Lucy is the type of professor that you'll want to respect and she'll do the same to you. Attendance is require of you want the 20 points by end of this semester. There are 10 discussion board assignments on blackboard (annoying). 2 timed quizzes (short time), final exam and final group project. You'll be watching black and white films.
This is not watch a movie and that is it class. You watch a movie and then have to write a paper on it. She will give you 0 points for not following directions. The grade in this class is out of 100 total. Your discussion boards are either 0 points or 2 points. So if you spend the whole weekend watching a movie and write a bad post you get a 0
loved this class! prof lucy is funny. no textbook. u should have netflix or hulu though. do your work watch the movies and u'll be fine.
Prof Lucy is a great person. The class is easy, she is NOT a tough grader at all as long as you ACTUALLY watch the film and write something. 8 weeks class is much better, since the 16 weeks one need you to make a film; it doesn't worth it for a 100 level class. Although in this way you have to write more in only a few weeks. Exams are easy.
she's amazing. since her class was hybrid there was a lot of homework. would take again.
When I started Professor Lucy's class for Intro to Screenwriting, I was completely green. She was very knowledgeable, helpful, and honest. She gives you a lot of helpful information that will help you advance in the study screenwriting and film. I wish she could teach more in-depth screenwriting classes.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. The discussion boards were miserable and she would give you a zero if you left one thing out. The movies were absolutely boring and she made this seemingly interesting class extremely enjoyable. DO NOT take Professer Lucy for this class!!!!
First day of class Prof. Lucy said she guarantees that we would sound more intelligent talking about movies after we take this class :-) I learned so much from this woman, it is true, I know I sound more intelligent now and I have been a movie buff all my life. I can't wait to take Film Appreciation 2.
trust me, do NOT take her class. you could spend 6 hours working on a discussion board post and still get a zero. It's too late for my nearly perfect GBA. it's not too late for you. i was doing more homework than my science and math classes. don't repeat my mistake.
Prof. Lucy is an awesome professor. If you are responsible and organized you will succeed in this course. It is a lot of homework, but she lays everything out for you. She gives rubrics and samples for all assignments, all you have to do is read them.
Prof. Lucy is very straight-forward about grading. As long as you follow the rubrics and samples you get an A
The Art of Film was a great course taught by Prof. Lucy. We watched a lot of foreign films. She's very particular about how you complete discussion boards. Follow her instructions or you will get a zero. The class is definitely worth taking. And she doesn't require a textbook for any of her classes, only video streamings.
I took this class because I love writing and want to get into films but was not sure what to expect. Prof. Lucy is an actual filmmaker and teaches with passion. She walked us through a step by step process that helped us develop a script. She is big on visual storytelling. I learned so much. I loved this class. Thank you Prof. Lucy I can now write
I took a scriptwriting class before and all I got out of it was how to format a script not much else. In this class Prof. Lucy had us work on character development story development, visual writing and all sorts of things I never knew went into writing a script. I really got a solid foundation on screenwriting out of this class. Well worth my time
Professor Lucy is one of the greatest professors and people I have ever met. She is incredibly smart when it comes to filmmaking and scriptwriting and will give you criticism and feedback to help you succeed. She always goes the extra mile to help you with your own personal projects and offers all kinds of help whenever you need it.
If you like film and want to learn more about it, don't take this class. It's hard to enjoy a film and actually appreciate it when you're citing answers and writing mini essays each week. Prof. Lucy is very knowledgeable but incorporates her other more technical classes into CST 152. This class should be about discussion and opinions, but not hers.
Absolutely LOVED this class!!! Professor Lucy is amazing and passionate about screenwriting. She lays the foundation step by step how to visually write then birth your script. I'm not a writer, but I learned a lot. GREAT Professor, take her.
I took CST 151 with Prof Lucy and liked it so took CST 152 with her again. I liked the way she lectures and gets students to participate. Learned a lot in both her classes. She know her stuff and gets excited talking about it. Her grading is fair. You will get a lot out of her classes. But attendance is important. I recommend her.
She is very tough, but fair. For this class which is beyond the entry level film appreciation she does expect more in depth analysis and backing off your view - while at the same time respecting alternate views to her own provided you've well argued/supported such. Certainly a class for lovers of film. Have taken many of her classes, recommended.
Screenwriting class is very tough (as any class with writing intensity is), but it is more than managble and the grading is certainly fair. The critique provided was always on point and construction oriented for you to improve your products, not just in form but in content too. My writing and ability to critique my work dramatically improved.
Such a positive experience taking The Art of Film, largely due to Professor Lucy. She has high expectations, but meeting them pays off. If you love this field, I recommend learning from someone who also loves it and is offering you real knowledge and experience to boot. It certainly made me look forward to going to class every week.
Prof. Lucy was instrumental in my decision to continue down a cinema path. She is tough, but you can tell she really cares about her students and believes in our potential. There is a lot of reading and writing in this class, but its just to ensure that you understand the materials she covers in lecture. Overall great class and excellent professor
I've taken several different classes with her. Although she is a rough grader, she is very knowledgeable on all her subjects and actually wants to teach them. Whoever is complaining that it's hard to get a passing grade did not read their rubrics or looked at the example. If you follow it, it is an easy A for all the classes.
Homework is 3 points so if you mess up in any way you get a 66%. If you do 3 extra credit assignments (roughly 10 hours of your life) your grade goes from a 85/100 (85%) to a 91/106 (85.85%). Her syllabus is not well organized. Most of our class missed a major assignment date because of it. Feedback she gives is usually "refer to syllabus/notes."
All we did was watch movies and answer her terrible questions on bb and somehow I got a B. I had no choice but to put more hours into this class than all of my other classes combined because we had to watch many movies. She thinks she's doing a service by making what is supposed to be a fun elective into a superficially difficult class.
Professor Lucy is a fantastic film teacher. I don't think I've ever had a professor this passionate. There's a lot of writing for her class, so if you were thinking about taking her class for an easy A watching movies, definitely take a different one. This is real class with an excellent professor. You will learn a lot.
This class took all my time. I am not a film major student, but l work very hard. However, she doesn't even care how much effort on the class. Too much homework, too much assignment. She will deduct points. I never see this kind off professor during my stay at Nova. Don't take any class. Trust me you will cry.
believe me you will suffer in her class.
I hate this class. I don't feel that l know nothing about film. All what she does give an assignment to watch terrible movies and answers her crazy questions on the discussion board. You will spend your time on those question, but she will give you .5 or 1 points out of 3 0r 4. I feel sorry to be in this class. She is very bad professor.
I am an engineering students but love movies. I took this class as a gen ed and I am so glad I did! Prof. Lucy is a tough but fair grader. There are weekly essays you have to write but you have to research. Group project was my favorite part, we made a film. I learned a lot but also had fun. But this is not a class for someone who needs an easy A.
I took this class with Prof. Lucy. This class is very stressful. Too many home work and watching boring films. She will give you a very small point after you took much of your time answering the discussion bord questions. I retreat taking this class with her.
I took this class in this semester. I regreat taking this class . Film is not my major, and l took this class as an elective. However, l did more than l did for my major. She doesn't give you a credit no matter how much you try. I cry for this class, and l mess up my GPA. I am not recommending any one to take this class with her. Very bad greader.
Professor Lucy was always thorough and gave great feedback. Her course gave a creative outlet and a great collaborative environment. Its a hybrid course and reading the textbook greatly will help you succeed.
I am a mechanical engineering major, and I am supposed to take a basic introduction to film, but I stumbled upon Prof. Lucy's class and I do not regret it at all. My favorite part of her class was the group project and class discussions. Her assignments are straightforward although be ready to do a lot of research and citations. She's the Best!!!!!
She took the time to work with students new to the Cinema program and was very understanding and patient. She will take the time to teach you how to do things the right way if you put in the effort and show that you are willing to learn. I have transferred from a different campus and will be finishing out my Cinema degree with her.
I retreat taking this course with her. She mess up my grade. No matter how much you work, she will give you a lower point. I am telling you doing go for this class she will drag you down.
Are you a film major? If you are nt, consider if you are really willing to watch, silent, long films of "historical importance" & creating a "film" as the group project. She assigns weekly "research" paper discussion boards.8-week course and the "hybrid" outside of the class work is very time consuming. Strict grading. Knowledgable but Tough Grader
CST 151 is packed with interesting content and teaches you a variety of universal skills. With that in mind, it's not an easy A: but once you adjust to the workload, it's not difficult to stay on track. Prof. GE can be a harsh grader, but bc of the amount of assignments, it's easy to make up for bad scores. I'd reccomend this class to any major!
I've never written a script before, but she taught me a lot. When I ran into plot problems, she helped me work through it and I'm satisfied with how it turned out. She walks us through the script making process well and gives you good tips. Just make sure you're on top of your assignments and reading!
Prof Lucy cares about her craft and wants her students to actually learn and benefit from being in her class. She will explain the grades she gives you if you ask, and she just wants for her students to succeed. Her courses are worth the work it takes--which isn't overwhelming by the way. :)
Great Professor and class. Gives descriptive feedback and will help you to produce a solid narrative screenplay.
Professor Lucy is an amazing teacher, and I guarantee that by the end of the semester you'll be both a better writer and a better screenwriter. Even if you're majoring in like history of economics or something else like that, her classes have a lot to teach you! The required reading isn't even a textbook, it's a really well written book.
Professor Lucy isn't easy but that because she expects great things from all her students . She is more than willing to work with you and cares if you actually learn. This class will help me greatly in my career in the future and gave me the tools and understanding of how to navigate myself in the film industry.
This is the first time Prof. Lucy created an internship class that not only helps and inspires filmmakers, but also teaches us the ropes on filmmaking. It's a class to be taken serious, so come prepared, creative and with questions. She wants the best for her students, so don't waste her time.
Prof Lucy is really great! She gives a few chances for extra credit. Make sure you come to class you will lose points! Overall, she does want her students to succeed! She can be a bit of a tough grader, but only because she wants you to do better. If you are a cinema major I would suggest taking her class she will give you detailed feedback.
Of the many professors I've taken at NOVA, Professor Lucy is hands down the best. She has always been tough on me, but clearly always want the best for myself and her students. She will push you to your creative limits because she sees the potential in you. Thank you for helping me become the best version of myself I could possibly be.
I loved taking Screenwriting with Prof. Lucy! I learned so much about how to craft a thoughtful & well-executed script. She genuinely cares about making sure each student fully understands the concepts she's teaching & how to apply them. She will push you to do your best, so if you're just looking for participation points this class is not for you.
I took this class last semester and it was ridiculous. When grading script she has some personal vendetta against dialog, so god forbid if yours has more than a sentence in it. The book is more helpful than she is when giving feedback, I'd suggest taking this course with someone else. Maybe a professor who actually appreciates dialogue.
Professor Lucy can be a nice person but as a Professor she is horrendous. The homework assignments almost never make sense but take up a huge part of your grade so they are important. Her criticism of things is completely arbitrary, subjective and seems to change all the time. She is the only Professor I have ever had issue with at NVCC.
I took class with Professor Lucy for the Spring 2021 semester online. The class was very enjoyable, being that its my first screenwriting course. Be prepared to get challenged. Screenwriting is not easy but its a passion of mine, which made it worth the while. Ms. Lucy cares about the students and does what she can to make the process smoother!
Professor Lucy is an excellent educator. I would take another class with her if given the chance. Unlike most online courses, or film courses in general, she expects the best from you. Some people may appreciate that and some might not. There are not too many assignments and her exams are "Mickey Mouse" as she likes to say. I recommend her class.
Prof Lucy is awesome! She will give you detailed feedback for improvement. She gives extra credit and her exams are easy. If you show up and pay attention to her lectures you will pass.
Prof. Lucy is a great teacher however she is a tough grader when it comes to projects. You will have to participate every class and talk about homework and projects. She will give extra credit opportunities and cares about her students.
i mean she was aight ig, overrated af in my opinion
I cannot say enough good things about this Professor or her class. It was one of the best classes I've taken. I learned so much about cinema and her lectures were interesting. She started every class with a discussion about the movie we watched. She has a passion for cinema and really makes you think, but allows you to come into it on your own.
This teacher was definitely interesting. I had completed all of the assignments in well thought out context and was even apart of her example during in class lecture for discussion boards. However, she began to give me 0.05/3 on ALL of the discussion boards, and when I talked to her about improvements she was very vague. Never again............
This is not a class to take if you're looking for a freebie. If you're genuinely interested in learning how to write and improve a screenplay, this class is an excellent choice.
I can personally say that Ive learned a lot in Professor Lucys screenwriting class. Her assignments will expose you to the different aspects and steps in screenwriting. Professor Lucy can be tough, but you will learn a lot and her classes are worth it. If you are serious about getting into the world of film, I highly recommend her class(es).
Teacher does not have background on this subject. She is vague and cannot answer questions. HW and test heavy class where teacher will not help you. No justification for grades which does she does not give on time. Unorganized and does not know how to use Canvas.
This professor is awful. Simply put. She is strict, rude, and expects a lot from the class when she barely does any teaching. She claims to have taught you things that she has never mentioned once, and be ready to be called out in front of everyone no matter what answer you give to her questions -- whether your answer was right or not.
Prof. Lucy walked us through different steps to help develop story and characters. She gives great feedback; she is tough on you but she does it to bring the best writer out of you. Her thing is visual storytelling and does not care much for dialogue driven scripts but you really get a lot out of her class. I learned a lot!
Hello fellow traveler! Take this Prof. with you! Shes inspiring and loves to give good feedback to ward off the crushing defeat of life. I've had some hard times and she's always been there to motivate me to finish my classes. Tough on you but wants the best part of you to shine! (Better in person rather than online IMO)
Professor Lucy's class had long lectures, but her teaching made sure it didn't feel like it. It felt easy to talk with her and ask questions- even up till the last class she was offering critique on our scripts and encouraging us to develop them further. Her class was one of the best I've taken across all my semesters.
Can't find a single negative thing about the class or her. Lectures were great with a mixture of videos & notes, & the result is understanding concepts simply. She calls on students to participate and listens to all discussions. Also, very accessible outside class and shows care for students because she's so forthcoming. Take her class if you can!
I took Film Directing, I loved it The course was intense but necessary It shows the weight behind a production & how huge teamwork is in film Prof Lucy encourages talking to classmates for help so it was also a practice in networking Definitely talk to classmates for help because the workload is a lot but w/ a team its easier to do Would take again
Awesome professor and mentor. Her Directing class is a great mix of learning and experience firsthand. She always gives great notes and feedback and really wants her students to succeed. It has been great learning under Prof. Lucy- I would take another class again in a heartbeat!
I took Prof. Lucy's screenwriting class and learned so much about writing a screenplay and how to effectively incorporate mis-en scene, minimal dialogue, and the "show don't tell" rule into a screenplay. Prof. Lucy was so helpful in working with us to craft our screenplays, whether it was proper formatting or understanding the 3-act structure.
She's an awesome professor who is tough but cares about her students and the quality of their work.I got into film late. Professor Lucy changed my life. She encouraged me, gave me confidence that I lacked in myself, and is laid a solid foundation for my script writing. She has wrote many recommendations for me and now I'm at UCLA's film school!
Prof Lucy is an amazing teacher that makes her lectures fun and interactive even over zoom. She is an tough grader. 90% of the work are discussion boards that have instructions that have to be followed perfectly. If you don't you can answer questions perfectly but if not written correctly you can lose pretty much all your points for an assignment.
For you to do well in this class, get involved early on so she knows your face and likes you. She'll have a tendency to call on you and answer class questions, BUT she will be much more lenient towards you since she has harsh deadlines. She's a very nice lady, and a very good film prof. Take her if you want a different perspective on the subject
Screenwriting was my first class with Professor Lucy. I quickly found myself quipping with her about Syd Fields and I was thrown by how casual she was whilst maintaining an air of authority and wisdom. Over the course of screenwriting Lucy showed dedication for each to her students, encouraging us and pushing us when we needed it; always with love.
This class is about screenwriting so expect to read and write. Prof. Lucy provides lectures on PowerPoint that she shares later for future reference. A book is required to read a chapter and a graded online quiz each week. She is tough on grading, she asks the right questions that will challenge you, shaping your story into a better script.
A great educator. She is a tough grader and you must attend classes and do the assignments to succeed. She is very approachable, if you are having a hard time understanding any assignment, she can go over things during office hours. Some of the lectures she uses for other classes as well, which can feel a bit repetitive, but great to revise.
The classes involve lectures, films to watch, discussion boards, and in-class discussions. She also asks for research papers with heavy research involved. Prof. Lucy is a caring Professor that will help you if you are struggling with any aspect of the class and reach out during class and/or office hours. Sometimes she gives extra credit work.
I'm not really sure what to say about this professor. One of the first things she said during our first class was "Don't think this class will be an easy A" Didn't think much about it at first but I should've. There were a lot of assignments to complete and personal research to be done on the subject matter.
I've taken several classes with Professor Lucy. She's passionate about teaching and cares about her students. Her classes are in no way easy, but she gives students what they need to get good grades. They're challenging in the best way possible.
Tough grader. If you miss something that she listed was required in your paper....immediate F on the assignment even if everything else is perfect. However, as long as you don't miss anything, the assignments aren't that difficult and the quizzes are easy (purposefully according to her.) She's funny and very nice and cares about the students.
Run away from Her. She is a tough grader and this is not an easy A.
Enjoyed this class a lot. Loved the discussions on the films we watched and analyzed. Tough but fair grader; Prof Lucy cares about her students. Worked hard for this class but learned so much and not even a film major.
If you can follow instructions, you'll do well! Pay close attention to the lectures as Professor Lucy makes the subject so interesting. I found the class to be informative and engaging. Her depth of knowledge makes all the difference. She is very clear on expectations and consistently enforces the rules outlined in the syllabus.
Would not advise taking her class. Took it because I thought it would be a cool elective to take, yet it is the hardest out of all my classes. She is extremely rude and mean. She will give you a 0 if you have a perfect paper but is formatted wrong. Also put in her syllabus that she needs proof of something like a family death in order to be excused
My honest review is that I recommend her to those who want their focus to be screenwriting. She will push you and make you a better writer. However, if screenwriting is not your focus, I recommend taking someone else. She is a very tough grader and her work is a little difficult.
Professor Lucy is a GREAT Professor. I took her screenwriting class and it was challenging but a good challenge. Classes are 3 hours and 45 minutes long but very useful and productive. Be prepared to be open to feedback on your assignments. She cares a lot about students. As long as you come to class and do the work you'll be in good hands
I have noticed that those who excel in her screenwriting class are those whose focus is already on screenwriting or who already have a background in writing. So I would only recommend taking her ONLY if your focus is already screenwriting, or if you want your focus to be screenwriting. If your focus is something else, look for another professor.
Professor Lucy is so knowledgable but her class is extremely tough. The outlines of projects can be confusing and she is a very hard grader. Attendance and participation is very important to her. She is great but I will never take her class again.
Professor Gerber-Egziabher approaches the film material in a discussion heavy manor which makes many of the long lectures a lot more enjoyable. The combination of enthusiasm and holistic knowledge of the material made the 7 week course fly by. However, we did have pretty lengthy discussion boards once a week.
Professor Gerber-Egziabher approaches the course material in a discussion heavy manor which makes many of the long lectures engaging and interesting. Professor Lucy has her own style of teaching. It can take some time to get used to as a student, but the more classes you take with her, the better an understanding you'll get of her style.
there's no reason an elective should be this hard lol. But if you do the work, it's fine. You gotta have interest in the class though. Prof. is nice, really, but a though grader. She takes teaching seriously
I took this 6-week class in the summer; however, she was nice but tough grader. The discussion board is a weekly basis and have to complete 4 questions each with 200 words in 6 sentences with a sentence of academic research quotes with citation and list of work references. The work you put in for these discussions are worth few points.
Film Appreciation, took this class as an elective im not even a film major. Class was super boring and difficult for a business major finance bro like myself. Long lectures and old boring silent films lots of essays. Lucy seemed like a really nice lady tho.
This is not an easy A, nor should it be. While it was tougher than my other classes, I learned a lot from Prof. Lucy. She cares about her students, her class overall, what you are absorbing, and encourages participation. Tough grader, yet amazing teacher. If you love film and want to truly learn, take this class.
This class stressed me out the entire summer!! You would have to do a discussion board post every week and search citations but they would have to be from the Nova database. If you made any little mistakes she would take off so many points. She even gave me negative points for forgetting to put the author's name. NOT EASY!! DO NOT TAKE!!!
Professor Lucy's class is tough but rewarding. The discussions are intensive, but engaging. Unstuck study was a lifesaver for prepping. If you're willing to put in the work, you'll learn a lot from this class.
I would never tell anyone to take a class with her. She's not even a tough grader she's unreasonable with her grading she'll tell you that you did a good job just need to clean some things up and you'll see a F as a grade. She didn't grade any of our lab work until after the homework was done so how would you know if you did your homework right.
I wouldn't tell anyone to take her classes. She's a unreasonable grader and takes points away for little things. She never graded our in class labs until after the homework was due and it wasn't a participation grade it would be graded like a test every time. We would learn something then have 15 min to complete it at the end of class. Do not take!
I hesitated to take Screenwriting with Prof. Lucy because class time was long. But I am so glad I decided to after reading some of the reviews here for this class. She gives detailed notes and helps you with your scripts. I learned so much in this class, I feel that I can incorporate the step by step method I learned to my scripts now.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU ARE VERY MUCH INTO FILM I am business finance major and took this class to get my elective points. I never got a full grade on a discussion. She is an incredibly hard grader and discussions are not even close to being worth the effort. Class in general is boring so do not take if you don't love film with your life
LOVED this class! It was everything I hoped for and more. The discussions of the films we watched and then really dive into them were the best part. Prof Lucy is knowledgeable and passionate about film, and that energy rubs off on the whole class. You can tell she really wants students to walk away with a deeper appreciation for cinema, and I did.
I don't usually speak up in class, but something about the way Prof. Lucy led discussions made me want to share. She made it feel safe and exciting to talk about film. I left the course feeling more confident—and a lot more curious. I would recommend this class and Prof Lucy.
Didn't expect to love a film class this much! Prof. Lucy's energy is infectious. Even as a non-film major, I felt engaged and inspired. The discussions were deep but fun—left with a whole new way of watching movies.
I like Prof Lucy, BUT I'm currently failing this class even with effort. Taking her class, PLEASE read the "how to do discussion posts" module that we all skip. It houses blanket assignment directions for ALL posts (it's a discussion-based course), that aren't mentioned or even referenced in each individual assignment. Attendance is mandatory.
I needed an elective and chose this on a whim. Honestly, it helped me slow down and think more deeply—something I rarely get to do in science courses. Prof. Lucy's passion made every class feel meaningful. Though it was online, prof made sure everyone took part in discussions of the films. Highly recommend this class.
Professor Lucy is an awesome professor, really knowledgeable, and her lectures are engaging and interesting, with a mix of slides and videos. There is no textbook required, but you must do research for each class. The discussions are based on the lectures, just be mindful of the timelines. I really loved this class; it has been my favorite so far.
I'd written scripts before, but this class showed me how to really write. I was nervous to share my work, but the workshop style labs were so supportive. Prof. Lucy's notes were detailed and helpful and I actually looked forward to revisions. I left the class with confidence in my voice. Highly recommend to anyone serious about screenwriting.
Avoid this class if you can. The professor is overly strict, especially about being on camera. Tons of work, and grading is harsh—I went from 90% to barely passing at the very end, she's not grading work on time. She may smile, but don't be fooled. This class was stressful and unfair. Never again.❌
Prof. Lucy knows all about cinema, and her lectures are clear and organized. This class was too much work, though! We typically had 3 assignments a week, plus some projects and tests too. She will not extend deadlines, and is VERY particular about how you do assignments. Don't take if you want a light workload and an easy A.
This professor is a great teacher to talk to during class but she is grades too harshly. I'm an A student but she is unforgiving. Through her style, she implements trial by fire and expects you to know how to create scripts from the start. She will grade harshly without care, even if it is your first time. Her canvas layout is also a mess.
I took this class online and with a late start, and it was probably my favorite class this semester. Lots of people say she's strict with grading or has absurd criteria, but that's cuz they didn't pay attention in the first lecture. She posts lecture slides with exact material too. She also respects class time and doesn't drag on either.
My only B out of 5 classes. Prof Lucy is a great teacher, but very difficult grader. Her grading style on written assignments seems arbitrary and based on a subjective interpretation of the rubric. She has an odd grading point system. She grades as if we are more experienced writers. Would choose a different professor for CST120 if new to writing.
