man he is hard and i think his test are hard too. but good teacher, we knows his stuff
He is tough.
He's a really good professor but hard on grading. You have to go to office hours if you need help. He's very cooperative on helping students.
he gives horrible advice. "don't see me unless u want to study abroad".
we was hasing problem too muching in his classing. this professor killing the**** outing of us. dude he is extremely tough, if you take him that means you are basically analytically, experimentally, theoritically and .... ****ed

He has hard exams, but he lets you gain points in class games that can greatly help.
couldn't understand a word he said
Very smart, helpful, although the accent is a little tough to get around sometimes, especially at 8am. homework and tests are frighteningly difficult - work together and you'll do better.
Very very tough... you've really gotta learn those materials if you wanna get a decent grade in his class. But I suppose he prepares us well for Chem IC. =)
the material he teaches in class isn't on the test. the test is comepletely different from the material he explains, and the practice tests he gives as examples.
I took his Chem 1B class for spring of 04. I think he class is really easy. The pratice tests are almost the same as the real ones.
tests are hard, accent is thick, lectures are boring, this lower division course is almost like an upper divisin couse cause it's so hard.
His practice exams are exactly like the real tests...people who complain just didn't study because that class was a piece of cake.
Not a hard class to pass. Practice ALL the free responses and time urself to make sure u can get through them easily during the midterms and final. The multiple choices are fairly hard. Dont sit too close to the front... he does a lot of in class experiments!
He failed me. I was only 5 points from a C-. He sucks.
This was the easiest class I had all quarter. It only took 2-4 whole days to finish the homework. Lecture notes do not prepare you for exams by any means.
Tests are undescribably difficult. Get practice tests and do them, then ask him and T.A. for help if you are confused. work together on homework if you know smart ppl. Difficult to pass class or get a high grade unless you are dedicated to trying!
tests are like his practice tests!!! easy class!!! and he gives extra credit!!!
This class is hard work. Homework is assigned everyday and you turn it in next class meeting. Welcome back to high school huh. His exams are nightmares also, one midterm is a take home that took a weekend to complete and the other is 3 hours long. If you have old exams use them.
Accent is horrible. Lectures are boring. If you go to his office hours, it seems like he doesnt want to help you. He goes over o-chem**** in 1b! stupid. I dont like the class. Wish i had wilson or even webster.
Like what the last person said.. he's a very hard teacher. Midterms are really hard..has few o-chem questions. Lectures are very boring. Impossible to get an a really good grade. Take wilson.avoid this guy. You cant use a periodic table on tests. Screwed my grade over

his class if ridiculous. he gives extra credit, but in order to receive extra credit, you have to earn over 2o pts on the webquiz. each question is worth 4 pts. therefore, receiving extra credit on the webquiz is impossible at times. his lectures are boring and no one pays attention because he has a thick accent.
this guy is really hard... i studied my *** off for this class and ended with a C+, u really have to study ALOT for this class. and he is not helpful at all. So you have to really teach urself and its pointless to go to lectures cause he has a really thick accent. gives some ec but its hard to get. good luck
terrible teacher w/ thick accent and monotone lectures. super hard midterms and even more impossible final. only gave 95 min. to complete final out of required 180 min. avoid at all costs.
His class is really hard, but his curve is weird. I just got barely a couple more points than the class average (which were always low low F's) and oddly pulled a B in his class.
hate his class and could not understand a word he was saying, good god get someone that speaks English! Plus he's lectures not helpful : you practicly teach yourself. Come on! HE sucks #*^&
The demotion of your grade after missing either lecture or homework put me in a hole quick. I had missed so much that I had an F after the first 3 weeks. But all I had to do was talk to him, he actually listened. I ended up with a B, happy ending.
He is a hard teacher but if you study enough you will do fine. Do the practice quizzes because they are just like the real ones. If you read the chapter thoroughly and do every exercise and example throughout the chapter, you'll do fine. I got an A in his
He is a nice guy and makes a strong effort to making sure you know what you are doing.
Make's you memorize the periodic table and makes you use color pencils. enough said. I had to work my ass off to get a B. The other subjects I had taken suffered as a result.
Take someone else, unless of course you like to read the chem book, and in addition to that love to read powerpoint slides. He should stick to his research and leave the teaching to people who actually care if the students understand or not
Very hard be ready for alot of reading and individual studying. Becuz what he lectures is pointless and isnt on the exams. you must read the book, and teach urself most of the stuff. There are a lot of Ochem questions midterms so be sure and study that. Find some some old midterms if possible, because there are exactly the same. GOOD CURVE at end.
Strict Attendance/Homework Policy. Thoroughly covered all topics and tests were fair. Unfairly given low marks
Seriously, Ludwig is not a bad professor and this is not that hard of a class. he kind of makes the class entertaining. there is a lot of extra credit points that you can get. he covered some basic o-chem stuff like naming, but it does help in chem 112a. overall, don't try to avoid him.
bartel was not that bad of a professor, midterms and final exam are very similar to the actual one, gives alot of extra credit points, only bad thing was his accent
not really hard class, you can make up with extra credit points
Top notch professor. Good class if you actually are in college to learn something rather than waste your time and your parents' money; not so good if you like to come to class smelling of brandy. I dunno, people who say his exams are too hard must be of the brandy variety 'cause I got over 100% on the final. In summary: he's too hot to handle!
He is only easy because of the extra credit he gives you. However, you are going to have to fight for those points as they are usually contests in the class so you're going against 100+ people trying to get 20+ pts for midterms. He stutters way too much and he doesn't help you much, he tells you to Google it instead of explaining it.
Bartels is a difficult teacher, avoid him if you can. If you do get stuck with him, be sure to attend all his lectures and discussion as this class is very difficult.
he sucks, he is not a good general chem teacher, you probably wont learn anything from his class and his homework are horrible...too hard, including his tests and midterms.
Not a bad professor but can be hard. He does a lot of demonstrations that can help to visualize some of the concepts but does expect students to have a certain understanding of the material prior to coming to the lecture. However, if you get confused go to his office hours. Seriously, it helps!
He's an ok professor...if you can avoid him do it. You won't learn anything from his class. He's eager to help out and ok at office hrs. but overall you walk away without learning anything. Do ALL the extra credit...and do well on the quizzes and homeworks. Plus get A's on atleast three of the exams and your good to go. But again AVOID him if you c
Bartels is Brutal. His class is so hard. His accent can make things hard also. He doesnt explain things well either. He is really mean and intimidating. The only saving grace for this professor is his insanely generous curve. If you have a choice dont take him. It isnt worth stress.
Bartels is hard to understand. Yeah, it's hard to work with him at first, but all that extra credit we had really helped me out. The previous years exams really helped a lot too. The Powerpoints are pretty useless sometimes, but read the book. That's basically all it's from.
Professor Bartels is an amazing professor. During the course of the quarter, you might think he is hard, but in all honesty, you will appreciate it in the end. The best part about his class is that he makes the otherwise dull topic of Chemistry interesting, and lectures are entertaining. If you study, you will do well. I got an A+.

Bartels does a fairly decent job of explaining things. He's hard to understand the first couple lectures until you get used to his acent. But his demos are REALLY COOL (explosions, burning stuff etc.)
Comes off as a difficult class and professor, but as the quarter goes on, he cuts the class a bit of slack. Good professor, but homework questions (as well as test questions) are somewhat ambiguous. Do the homework, because its an easy 30% of your overall grade. Not a bad class, and a pretty good professor.
He is a great teacher! All the hard work he makes you do help out a lot in preparing for the midterms and final. Theres 3 midterms and 1 final and because there are so close to one another, it keeps the material fresh in your mind. Only bad thing was his accent, but you get used to it within the first couple of weeks. = )
Dr. Bartels is a great professor. I definitely recommend taking him. If you are stuck between taking Webster or Bartels, take Bartels, he is MUCH better. Be aware, however, that you need clickers (mandatory attendance) and homeworks are hard. He posts previous midterms, which are very similar to real midterms. Overall, he is one of my favorite.
He was such an easy teacher! I did nothing basically for the whole quarter except go to class and get extra credit his class was so freaking easy!!! Gives lots of extra credit but accent and stuttering is very annoying!
The easiest chem teacher out there I have no clue what was going on all quarter and I still got a B+. HW was easy just go to mandatory office hours and they do it for you. There were no midterms only a final worth 1/3 your grade but he tells you everything on it and gives you examples. The curve was ridiculous it was out of 250 and 100 was a B-.
This class goes two ways, if you study and keep up you'll actually learn a lot. His method of teaching by giving weekly quizzes and hw is way better than midterms. Yet you can do practically nothing and still pass. I got a C+ and had NO idea what was going on all quarter. The final is crazyy hard, not multiple choice but was curved. Get him!
If you're a visual learner, this might be the class for you. His lectures consist of demos & videos mostly. Homework&Quizzes are mostly calculations. Don't slack off, it'll hurt you! read read read! study study study!!!
sure he does fun and appealing experiment now and then but other then that wow his class is a bore for me. the whole mandatory participation is lame and it doesn't even count towards your whole grade it can drop it tho. he has hw every week aris (online) and written. the written hw is CRAZY intense. final is tough. imo he is a no for me.
probably one of the worst teachers in science I've encounter. The structure of the class is horrible, he skips around chapters. If you look at his syllabus compared to other chem classes, its completely different. lectures are completely boring, you constantly see people disrespecting him and leaving class. Even the TAs agree that he horrible!
Bartels is a tough professor. One, during lecture he talks too fast and on top of his heavy German accent it makes it hard to understand him. Two, he makes you attend office hours which I think is a waste of time. Three, he gives a lot of hw, Aris and really hard written hw. And lastly his quizzes and final are super hard.
Professor Bartels was AWFUL. I had no idea what we were learning in the class the whole time despite going to SI, office hours, and having an extra study group. His grading was very unfair and he didn't curve that much. He had demos in class that were USELESS, and wasted about 30 minutes of class time. DON'T TAKE HIM!
All he does it flip through a powerpoint and give us a clicker quiz everyday. Impossible midterm...It is irrelevant to want he tells you to study. 45 minutes to complete 35+ questions. Ridiculous amount of homework that is close to impossible to complete on your own. 101 ways to fail. GG
Very difficult to understand. Can't explain concepts well at all to students. If you want to do well in this class, read the textbook. Flips through his ppt slides without explaining much and tests you on stuff he doesn't go over. Organic chemistry for the first midterm watch out.
I believe Mr. Bartels is confusing Chem 1A with an upper division class. He tries to lower your grade in every way possible until you fail. No I am not exaggerating; every little thing drops your grade... Oh! for the midterm...Don't even try. -James H 11AM Class
Mr. Ludwig Bartels is without a doubt the worst teacher I have had at this school. He teaches intermediate aspects of chemistry without even bothering to teach the basics. He rushes through PPT's and the midterm tests your ability to understand concepts not taught by himself. Don't take this professor, unless you want a lower GPA.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. He is extremely hard, teaches his class at a ridiculously fast pace, and expects everyone to know everything before he goes over anything. This class caused me so much stress. I felt as if I never had enough time to catch my breath. At times, he lectures on material completely different from the hw assigne
He is one of the worst professors i have ever has. His extra credit is useless. His midterms are hard because of the amount of material it cover in 50 minutes. If you get bartels you are screwed, it is better to drop the class instead
Worst teacher Ive ever had. Drop this class. There are much easier chem teachers and it sucks sitting there watching others breeze by when you are failing and still having to work 20 hours a week for his class
Ok im not gonna lie, bartels is a seriously tough teacher, but in order to pass his class you HAVE HAVE HAVE to study hard. do homework and begin to love ur TA, he will help u! This professor isnt out to get anyone, he just has COLLEGE expectation. If u get this professor, be ready to work :) He knows what hes talking about and he is super smart!
Bartels...I hated/ and still hate him so much! I swear you think he's out to get you and I was hearing so many bad rumors that he didnt care about his students. the midterm average: 33% and when someone asked whether he would curve if the average was low...he laughed!! this is true, i was there!! Seriously...dont take him, it will lower your gpa! D
Hardest Chem001A chemistry professor in Riverside. Midterm was extremely difficult and he doesn't prepare you for any of it.
Most difficult chemistry 001A professor. Class average for midterm was 33% and he WILL NOT CURVE ANYTHING! If you choose to take him, good luck.
His class is SUPER hard and some of his TA even say that he's teaching stuff from organic chemistry.
Horrible professor. You have to attend lectures because there are clicker questions. There's so much homeowrk. Online homework is assigned every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Online homework is due before the next one is assigned. Written homework is assigned every Wednesday. Hard midterm. Doesn't curve. HORRIBLE TEACHER!
Hardest chem teacher in the world..avoid his class..if you are in the LC, YOU ARE SCREWED..seriouslly avoid him at all cost..he has a thick accent and is horrible at teaching..gives more homeowrk than necessary..
Seriously, Bartles is a really tough professor. He does not kid around when he says only 1/3 of the class will pass. He has mandotory class attendance, due to his idiotic clicker ?s, and if you miss 3 days you automatically fail the course. He doesn't prepaire you well for the midterms.I had a F in the class so I dropped.I would study 20 hrs a week
Thinks all of his students are chem majors. Gives tons of HW. Teaches material from the entire chem series plus organic chemistry. Worst teacher for and introductory course.
He is a good teacher if you are ready for college. He is indeed difficult but not impossible. You learn an immense amount of Chemistry. Only thing is he is not available during office hours. I suffered through this course but it was well worth it.
I liked Batels because he seemed genuinely interested in what he taught, but he is VERY hard! Be prepared to study and be doing homework ALL the time! I learned more about chemistry than I ever thought I could. VERY hard midterm but offers a practice final which is exactly the same as the final. Offers extra credit towards the end of the quarter.
Extremely difficult teacher. You learn a lot of Chemistry, but your GPA will suffer in return. Does not curve at the beginning, middle, or end!
Worst teacher I have ever had. can not teach at all and his office hours consists of 200 people in a small office trying to get help. my friend who had 1a with another teacher got a B and im way smarter than her. his midterms and finals are curved down. example. the minimum requirement is 40 points for a d.if u get 39 points u automatically get a 0
Best C+ I have ever gotten in my life. I feel bad for all the people that actually worked their asses off and failed. Also the people who were close to passing but failed since there was no curve. The evidence is clear in that Bartels doesn't care about his students. Please pray for the students and their family who paid so much money to fail.
This professor does not treat his students like adults. He assigns daily homework and required colored pencils on tests. Forces you to ask a question every week or else you fail. Average of first midterm was a 33%. Go to officer hours and you'll get TAs who say use Google cause they don't know how to do anything.(not all of them)
If you plan to go to med school and you have this professor, think of it like this...Your dream of going to med school is the Titanic...Bartels is the large iceburg...You will sink to the depths of no return and your GPA is sunk as well.
OMG NO JOKE..BARTELS IS THE HARDEST TEACHER IN THE WORLD..BUT HE TAUGHT ME SOO MUCH AND I WORKED MY BUT OFF TO PASS THE CLASS... I THINK THOSE WHO DROPPED THE CLASS DIDNT WORK HARD ENOUGH BECAUSE THIS IS COLLEGE..NOT HIGHSCHOOL.. WE ARE HERE TO LEARN AND IF YOUR NOT STUDYING TO YOUR FULLEST POTENTIAL.. THEN I DONT KNOW WHAT YOUR DOING HERE.
Super hard professor. No curve, useless extra credit. Drop the class if you have a chance.
I'm not going to repeat what has already been stated by other reviewers, but it is noteworthy that Prof Bartels makes exams extremely unfair. On the exams, rather than having the same problem but with different constants, you can have a completely different set of problems than the person next to you. This does not fairly evaluate each student...
First, he has a strong German Accent. Can barely understand him, but still clear at times. He has clicker quizzes that you have to answer at each lecture & mandatory office hours!! This is a HARD CLASS! He taught us Chem 1B & O. Chem in a Chem 1A class! WOW!! Stay away from him!!! It's a hard battle to pass. I barely got a C-
I'm going to go ahead and go against the consensus here, at least partially. First off, yes, Bartles is extremely difficult: homework, daily+weekly quizzes, tests. But, he does provide all the information you need to pass. Students who complain about how they were cheated by Bartels are, simply put, inadequate. You will pass if you study, FACT.
Bartels was definitely a hard teacher. There was online and written homework, weekly quizzes in discussions and clicker quizzes every lecture, and mandatory office hours.I didn't start to work my butt off until I failed the midterm and ended up getting a B+ in the class because I studied a lot.Get a better teacher if you can though.
He Teach too many things that won't be on the final and the final and midterm is way harder than the other chem class..it will help if you get a good TA ,cause the office hour and written homework will kill you
HARD CLASS, but doable. Hard teacher but knows material. teaches to a higher standard than other teachers but gives extra credit and practice tests at end of class. German accent but still quite understandable. ask him a question he will tell u how to do it (but not show). Overall a decent teacher. COLLEGE LEVEL CLASS.
How does it feel to be on teaching probation again? Bartels+Teaching Probation should say it all!
Probably the hardest class I have ever taken. Any opportunity to make the class more work, harder work, or more complicated, Bartels will take it. It left me extremely prepared for the next chemistry but if you have a life outside of chemistry, perhaps a job, other classes, any friends, or if you enjoy sleeping, then be prepared for a hard quarter
Hard Professor. Barely got away with a B-. He teaches stuff that are not really applicable for Chem 1A. There's written assignments that you'll need to work with with a TA because they are extremely hard. Office hours, study groups, and practice are the only solution for getting B- or better in this class.
I got a B+, but this guy needs to stick to research, he is a good teacher, but is absolutely HORRIFIC at making exams, he writes exams to prepare students for his research labs, and focuses his material on developing his future researchers. THE WORST DROP IMMEDIATELY
Ok, here is the truth. Bartels is a difficult teacher, but he is preparing you for the real world more so than any teacher you will ever have. Study hard, take detailed notes, always do your hw, and use all office hours. I got an A and gained a great understanding of the coursework. Don't over think a problem, learn to make reasonable assumptions.
HE IS THE HARDEST PROFESSOR EVER. He uses clicker for attendance&if you missed more than 3 then you'll get an F. He makes you go ask a question in office hours every week, if you don't for more than twice you get an F. And he teaches organic chemistry in this class too. Prepare to fail if you're in a learning community and you're in his class.
I took him for 1A, but then I also worked in his lab for a year. To those who say he writes tests to the level of his research, you're wrong. He writes to prepare you for COLLEGE. That helped me ALOT in UD Chem/phys. Pansies. Hard, but by no means the hardest professor on campus, and he's helpful too, which is more than some. Dr. B is a good guy.
To say that he prepares us for college is rather naive. He is not a good example of college will be.If he was, then why is it that only he has 2 probations for failing more than half the class?Does this mean that other professors on this campus fail to get us ready for college? His tests are an overexaggeration of what college is really like.
Super hard professor. Just try to get into another class because he makes you work really hard every day. I'm pretty sure I cried once a week in frustration from this class.
This dude makes the class a lot harder than it needs to be. He treats his class as if that is the only one they are taking. There is soo much extra work that doesnt really help your understanding of the material. He sometimes even assigns hand written hw that his TAs cant even solve. Also this dude teaches you ochem in chem1A, totally unneccesary
This is one of the easier classes I have taken. I relied on my high school knowledge and I passed with an A. Recommended class.
Does experiments almost every lecture. Beneficial homework to understand the concepts in class and real world connections. Three exams all free response which can benefit you with putting something down over a mc exam.Grades using a GPA scale and midterm grade are averaged together. Lot of independent learning is required for that grade you want.
Got A's in all of Organic chem classes and got a C+ in his class. Must I say anymore?
He is a very fair professor. He assigns homework almost every night, and the written part of the homework is impossible to do unless you spend hours in his or the TA's office hours. But his test are fair, but are completely free response. He is the first professor I have had that challenged my intelligence and made me feel like I am in college.
He honestly sucks at teaching. Cant understand because of accent. His homework is ridiculous and cant be done without hours of being with the TA's. Dont take his class just put it that way. Tests are free response and questions that are not even covered.
He is the worst professor I have experienced and really sucks at teaching. Has a German accent and sometimes goes into a mumble. Gives ridiculous HW that's impossible to do without help. Tests have unreasonable questions, stuff that was barely touched upon. PARTICIPATION AND ATTENDANCE GRADES! Must participate and attend class or else you'll fail.
THE WORST TEACHER OF MY LIFE!!!!!!HE ruined my freshman year. You cant understand the stuff he says. His homework has ridiculous questions. Aleks is the worst. I have third year chem majors that cant even help me w/ my hw. DONT TAKE THIS CLASS! i decided to challenge myself with it...worst idea ever. I regret the day i entered his room!
Save yourself the grief. Any other professor teaching this subject is better. Was required to go to class everyday otherwise you will fail. Tests didn't resemble anything close to what was taught in lec. I thought I was taking Organic Chem when I took his tests. Stay away from this professor. If he is the only teacher left wait till next quarter.
This was only one of several classes that felt like a real college-level course. If you do HIS homework, you'll do fine, which can be done in discussions. In-class demos are helpful, as well. All-in-all, if you like to learn, take this prof; if you don't, don't go to a 4-year university.
His class was challenging, but I love a challenge. I really learned a lot because I was required to really think in order to complete the assignments. He is fair and teaches more than you need to know, so you are prepared for future chemistry courses.
Bartels was a great professor! I felt like he was preparing us for college. If you go to his office hours, you will be able understand what he is teaching. His tests were like the practice tests made by him and his TAs. His lectures are dry, but his experiments in class are really amazing. He also gives you extra credit.
HORRIBLE professor! He challenges you to the fullest and that would be cool if it was the only class i was taking! I would spend hours and hours doing his practice questions and his aleks hw. I tried very hard in his class to receive a C+. Be ready to work extremely hard!
I loved him! He is definitely the only professor that's ever challenged me. Go to the office hours and read the book and you'll do well. He's a really nice guy too, he just looks intimidating. He believes that if you did well on the final you should do well on the class. I got an A in the class.
Heavy German accent, homework was impossible, aleks was tedious, office hours/discussion was a disorganized mess. Somehow managed a B but I had to really work for it.
The only thing I might not agree with him on is his auto fail policy, but rather than that he WANTS you to learn and he is very excited and passionate to teach science. I feel like foreigners always have a bad reputation because of their accent, etc and students don't want to look into who the professor is and what he/she wants to portray in class.
Don't really like his autofail system where you have 10 chances before you fail that class if you skip homework, didn't pass clicker quizzes, or don't attend discussion. Exams are all free response but you get cheat sheets. One thing I like about his class is that he connects his students to real life applications with the material we are learning
This class is hard. Attendance is mandatory* Discussion is mandatory* and Homework is mandatory* (* you get 10 "participation points" that you can use to skip these, and you can get more by getting AA+ on a homework) Homework can (and should) be done in groups (it is hard), and students are allowed 3 cheat sheets for exams (also very hard). Study.
gives out hw problems that we can't even find the answers online. exams are ridiculously hard. doesn't provide answers to practice midterm/final. worst and toughest professor I've ever had. I should've post this on iEval but missed the deadline so came here.
Professor Bartels is one of the best teachers I've ever had. His class is A LOT of work - but it's worth it. The effort that he has put in to the organization of his class is apparent. He teaches you how to think about chemistry. If you're looking for an easy course, this is not it. If you're serious about chemistry, you must take his course!!
Lots of homework on material that was for other classes. clicker questions are hit or miss so don't skip lectures. Free-response midterm that was insanely hard and he doesn't make you feel better by saying everyone fails the first time
He makes a mistake on hw or clicker quiz, acknowledges and apologizes, then says he can't do anything about it, which doesn't help anyone's grades. Put stuff on the midterm that he didn't teach, wasn't on the hw, and was in the textbook (as a caption for a picture). We were told to memorize the periodic table cuz there wasn't 1 hanging in the hall.
He's one of the hardest professor's I've ever had. His midterm for 2018 was all FRQ while the other professor's all had multiple choice. The class average for the first midterm was very low. I would suggest you go to lectures the clicker Qs during lecture help add points. It's really hard to study for his class and I suggest you drop it.
HORRIBLE. cannot teach. 20 free response questions for midterm (there were 2 midterms and he takes the highest grade). final is 40 free response questions. Every other professor is multiple choice and their teaching is more organized. i felt completely lost in his class. do not take his class please. HE ASSIGNED HW DURING THANKSGIVING BREAK! WTF
I was forced into this class because of my learning community. His tests are extremely difficult and are not multiple choice like other classes had. He assigned homework every day (including over Thanksgiving break). If possible, avoid this class at all costs.
Holy crap, where do I even begin with this dude? His tests are disproportionately harder than the other professors' (FRQ only vs. some multiple choice), terrible lecturer who overcomplicates simple topics, assigns homework even over breaks when some people can't access the internet, and just constantly makes things far harder than needed. AVOID!
His clicker questions at the beginning and sometimes end of lectures really saved my grade. Midterms and final were FRQ's and asked insanely difficult questions that even my genius friends couldn't answer. Introduced OChem and Quantum Mechanics to a GenChem class for some reason. Made easy concepts difficult. Even his TAs didn't know how to help us
Prof Bartels will make you work for it. All of his exams are free response questions. Everything on the test he teaches, but the questions on the exam are not really emphasized during lecture. Like he'll spend a minute on a slide and that slide will be on the midterm. Make sure to not miss any classes because of the clickers.
This is probably the most difficult class you can take at UCR. Don't take this professor if you dont have to. Midterm and final where free response only. Topic covered were beyond the standard chemistry 1A material. Unnecessarily difficult class.
Yikes. Free answer midterm and final. there's 2 midterms and he chooses the better one, but really gets you down by saying most people fail. not all homework is mandatory, but there is a minimum you need. exams are nothing like the homework. clicker questions in class are mandatory or you lose 5 points (you'll need a clicker the first lecture!!)
Professor Bartels is a good instructor. Hes available during office hours and tests you on info he mentions in class- I never used the txtbk. Reading these comments over the summer made me very nervous, but if you do the homework, attend lecture, disc. , and SI, youll do great! There are so many extra credit opportunities to help boost your grade
Show up to his lecture every day because he gives daily clicker questions (he has this dumb policy that if you get one clicker question wrong, the whole day's points are lost)He's the only chem1A prof that has given a written midterm/final and because of that you actually need to understand the material. no textbook needed unless you want more info
This class was definitely a challenge. You really have to pay attention in class and really understand the concepts in order to do well on the midterm and final, which are both free response questions. The exam questions are nothing like the homework or discussion questions and they are very broad. read the textbook to understand the material.
The class is not an easy A for sure, but the professor offers many opportunities for extra credit that you should take advantage of (clickers). The midterm and final were both free response. Questions from midterms were reused so using your midterms to study for the final is helpful. Discussion questions sometimes pop up on the exam.
You don't actually know how to study. You can't find the reference online. Attending is mandatory, but it's just wasting of time.
Bartels does give a lot of homework (almost daily), but only the top forty count towards your grade. While his exams are free response, he is a relatively easy grader and gives a lot of extra credit. Also, there are almost always clicker questions each lecture. He gets the material across very well and prints out the slides for you. Great teacher!
Homework is worth 30% of this course. His homework is pretty tough and you can't always find reference material online for help. You really have to work with your peers and ask for help from the TA's/ Professor (you really can't afford to be introverted in this class). His exams are fair. He is very kind and smart I enjoyed having him as a prof.
Definitely would call this professor inspirational. I think hes a great teacher but if you want an easy A maybe pick someone else?
Gives nightly homework that doesn't relate to the material discussed in class. Midterm and final study guides are almost identical to the test, so just study those - but even then, all his tests are short answer and nothing is curved. He was impressed that "only" half of the class failed the midterm. Lectures are a huge waste of time.
A lot of people complain about Bartel's accent but honestly if you just pay attention to class and don't fool around, its really easy to pass his class. He works to tell you what will be on the test and focuses on those topics. He has lots of clicker questions for extra points just in case, giving you quite the leeway. Do the hw! Goes a long way.
He's definitely not as bad as people say he is. The midterm and final are identical to the practice questions. He gives homework everyday which actually helps boost your grades in the end. There are also clicker questions which are bonus points. The class was good
Midterm and final is free response but he gives practice ones which are really similar so study those. You need to go to lecture since he does clickers and they are extra credit and attendance. Do your homework with peers to try and maximize your points. If you took AP Chem then this class should be easy. Turn in your lecture notes for ec!
He DEFINITELY is not as hard as people say he is in this thread. I was terrified at first but he goes back or pauses on a slide if asked. LOTS OF EXTRA CREDIT plus clickers are bonus so do go to lecture. Free response but imo thats easier because he takes questions directly from past exams that he releases at the start of the quarter. STUDY THOSE!
Prof. Bartels' class is definitely not an easy class to take, do not take it if u are not willing to put effort into studying outside of class. Homework is a lot, and is also on weekends and breaks. He gives a lot of EC in clicker/discuss. and wants u to succeed. Very smart professor, not only did I get an A, but I learned so much from this class.
He wasn't good at lecturing. If you are taking his class, be prepared to study on your own. His midterm and final are all free responses. He is teaching beyond CHEM1A level like OChem stuff. However, he gives past year exams that are identical so you can practice.
Ludwig makes this introductory to chemistry class unnecessarily hard for no reason. Some people are not chemistry majors but he talks about chem in very general and broad form that you will not even learn in Chem1A but in later chem according to him. Discussion is a lot of b*tch work also even though its just googling and drawing tons of sketches.
During a pandemic, this is not the professor to take! He does not take into account students complaints and his lectures are hard to follow. Assumes everyone took AP chem in high school and even teaches things higher level chem students are currently learning. Has an oral final and 2 midterms. If you work and are not full-time student do not take.
Horrible professor to take with and without the pandemic. Clearly does not care about his students and does not teach very well. Only chem1A professor to give free-response midterms and an ORAL final. The discussion does not even help anyone-just busy work. Also does not believe in curving. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL!!!
Hard to follow lectures. Assigns homework day of and expects it at 11:59pm. He does clicker questions on stuff you just learned a slide before. Discussion homework does not help. Discussion TAs are useless. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PERSON.
Bartel's is the type of professor that focuses on "Life" and not the content of the class.
DO NOT TAKE this professor! he lectures like he's talking to a bunch of organic chem students. I studied 24/7 and BARELY got an A. He expects you to have no life outside of his class. does not think students should collaborate on homework assignments and reports them to conduct. ON HOMEWORK!!!! save yourself, don't take him
Teaches like he assumes you know all of organic chemistry. Is not understandable or considerate especially at times like covid. do yourself a favor and don't take him
Switches between physics, ochem, and gen chem without any clarity. Assignments and expectations are unclear, and he WILL ignore your questions during lecture. His in-lecture questions are rushed and the website to turn them in crashes often. He relies on the TAs, who rely on him, making them all unhelpful. You'll do well if you can make sacrifices.
Awful teacher, His lecture is useless, you must spend a lot of time to study. WORST TEACHER I EVER KNOW. He gives us tons of discussion hw, and really hard to do. I don't why he teaches chem in UCR. I want to learn!!!!!!!!
Avoid this teacher if you can!! Ignores his students comments/concerns especially with the pandemic. Only thinks his way is the only/right way. Very unclear in his grading and assumes that you have taken AP chem before even though this is chem1a. Discussions are just busy work. Be prepared to study a lot on your own because his lectures dont help
Do not take Bartels. He does NOT care about his students. Class is mandatory and it doesnt even help. He doesnt explain anything good and complicates easy topics. Hes more detrimental than beneficial when learning chemistry. Terrible class to take online. Assumes you have all the time in the world outside of class. Oral final was terrible.
Do NOT take this professor. He does not care about his students during the pandemic. Teaches Physics and ochem concept (such as mass spec in chem8b) in chem1a?? Don't recommend, he was put in academic probation for failing too many students. Again, do NOT take and avoid at all cost
Terrible do not take avoid at all costs. Too much work and doesn't care about students.
He is so insanely out of touch with his students. At first, I was under the impression that he cared about his students but was a tough grader, but then he referred almost his entire class to conduct for being on a group chat. He also said that if students had trouble balancing work and school, they should quit their job and take out a bigger loan.
Good luck, As an "intro to chem class" you be better off learning from khan academy or the Organic Chem Tutor. Bartels is out of touch with the actual "intro to..." part he dives deep into the O-Chem root of chemistry. Hw are tedious and apparently you get reported to student conduct if you help each other out in gc.(majority students got reported)
horrible prof, avoid at all costs. Complicates easy topics and taught way above gen chem level (ochem and quantum physics). Doesnt care about students or answering questions. Reported majority of our class for academic misconduct for helping each other w hw in a gc. Lectures are confusing & dont correlate w textbook, and discussions arent helpfu
One of the worst professors at UCR. Doesn't teach well, hard to understand, super confusing, and has a horrible grading system which includes an Oral Final and tedious Discussion worksheets. Reported 200+ students for being in a Groupme and threatened to fail all of them. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!!
Save yourself a HUGE favor and don't take this professor.
His lectures are really disorganized and your questions will not be answered if you ask using his terrible website. Clicker questions are stressful and he never goes back to them and explains. His oral final is a test of "do you know this random name", concepts, and no math (which is some students' strong point). Don't ever make a large GroupMe.
Terrible professor. Doesn't answer questions during lectures, does not answer well during OH. His lectures don't help at all, yet they are still mandatory. Assigns so much busy work (i.e. finding the industrial cost of niche chemical compounds) that can take hours. Daily homework assigned sporadically. Mass reported 200 students for being in a gc.
Bartels wasn't really a good professor or lecturer at all. I don't think he's a bad person tbh or a bad chemist (I assume he does a great job with his research). But I think he went hard with reporting when he shouldn't have (possibly greatly affect someone's academic career over homework mc answers). I wasn't in the GC so it didn't affect me.
Never take Chem with this professor. Will make you work the entire quarter and is probably one of the worst lecturers and you won't learn anything. It's all memorization and putting that onto his two midterms. This class is a joke don't take it.
Professor Bartels is the poorest performing professor I've ever had. He's not understanding and has his collar held too up high. He forgets that he teaches and introductory course. His poor performance is at the expense of students interested in stem. Unfortunately, I know of many who after taking this class will be leaving stem. Shame.
This prof is the worst prof I've ever had so far. He assigns homework daily, but he assigns them at random times. Furthermore, he barely gives any time to respond to his clicker questions at all. The group homework is ridiculously out of the course material's league. He'll never answer your questions during lectures or office hours. Overall 0/10.
This mad is the worst professor I have ever encountered. His lectures move too fast and contain abridged book material, however lectures are mandatory as he asks clicker questions for credit. He only gives half an hour for midterms, which often have material that isn't gone over and essentially says "deal with it" if you have any problems with them
Absolutely terrible. Very unorganized and very inattentive to his students. Group homework is way out of the courses league and we are only given 30 minutes to do the midterm, which is also way out of the courses league. His system is terrible and needs a lot of work and overall the worst professor Ive had so far.
Don't take this professor if you want to save yourself a headache. He has a habit of failing people and reporting them without sufficient evidence. Absolutely hated the class. I had a 97% in class before the final and during final he said that I cheated without proof because I was acting nervous. Took the class again and got a 100 in it. Don' take
Terrible. One of the worst professors at UCR.
He doesn't teach well at all and his exams are insanely difficult
God awful. I've never gotten a professor as bad as him. I got a C+ in the class and it sticks out like a sore thumb on my transcript since I get A's in pretty much all my other classes. Don't even consider taking. His oral final graded me on 3 questions that I screwed up because I was nervous... ridiculous.
If you value your sanity, avoid him at all costs. He mumble talks and its so hard to understand what hes saying. He sometimes posts hw at odd times (2-3AM) and makes it due at 2PM the same day. The discussions are no help at all, its just there to complete group work. If you get him make sure to attend student tutor sessions, otherwise RIP
Before taking this class I saw that he had a 2.8/5 rating but I took it as students being salty for not ending with a good grade in the class. However, after taking his class I saw first hand just how much of a horrible professor he is. It makes no sense his midterms are 40% of your grade and the final is only 10%. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COST
I've been pretty good at keeping up in "difficult" classes, but this class is something else. He gives you no direction in studying for midterm other than saying that "everything covered in the slides" will be covered. Discussion groups dont help and the TA's are just as harsh graders as he is. You go over stuff in hw that you probably didnt' learn
While it's hard to understand him while he mumbles through lecture slides, it doesn't help that a decent chunk of content dives into subjects like OChem. SI leader was confused on why we were learning these things in general chemistry but still tried to help. Midterm 30% grade, highest between prac/actual paper exam. FInal 10%???, 10 min oral.
He has a bad reputation but honestly, I really enjoyed his class. If you took notes on the class or reviewed his lecture slides his tests weren't terrible. He also does extra credit clicker questions towards the end of the quarter.
Shouldnt have chosen his class. Totally unreasonable tests and discussions are pointless. Should have stayed away from him
Literally the worst professor that I have ever had. Would assign homework at the most random times including 2 or 3 am. Discussions were useless and grading was just so difficult for all homework assignments. The midterm is worth more than the final and you cant see your grade until the final week of school. Bad bad class, bad teacher too.
His class is graded on 30% midterm, 20% HW, 20% clickers, 10% final, 20% group HW. Midterm: highly conceptual from his lecture slides focus on main topic areas instead of small details HW: randomly assigned don't slack Clickers review last lecture before class Final Oral, 10min, 3-4 questions Group HW hard grading; random topics
Don't be scared of this class! Exams only on material from lecture slides. Previous year's exams provided are almost the same as the real test. One extra point per lecture note submitted. Each homework is 1-5 problems each. Most ppl got an A+ on the homework based on the graph. A lot of free points! Can easily calculate grades from syllabus.
Avoid at all costs as he's just not worth the insane headache. Teaches Ochem in an intro chem class. Very hard to reach about anything and homework assigned everyday at random times. As well as a 10% final that's a 10 min oral interview. Good luck if you end up with him. You'll need it.
Family incident happened so I couldn't do an assignment and this guy says I cheated on the assignment I missed. Explained my situation and he still says I cheated. If I could rate a teacher lower I would. Plus he didn't teach anything and his final was oral, which is just nonsense.
Very annoying class. Too many group assignments that brought down my grade. Oral final was ridiculous with no way to study for it. Know he accused people in my class of cheating. I really did not enjoy his class and Iwould not reccommend you take CHEM001A with him if you can avoid it
Unlimited attempts on homework but he docks off points for each attempt
I would give a zero to this professor if I could. Be prepared to do a homework assignment everyday. The group homework assignments are time consuming and require unnecessary knowledge (such as knowledge on how to use programs such as excel) for the course that will result in a lot of googling. Avoid at all costs.
Taking this class was horrendous. Group homework was difficult to understand and would not give clear instructions. The midterm is less than an hour but expects almost a page of work per question. The Smartwork he gives a 10% penalty for each attempt so even that brings your grade down. Homework was given daily and at random times. AVOID!!!!!
Gives no time for clicker questions which are graded based on accuracy and require calculations. Goes very fast through topics and covers the bare minimum. The lectures are difficult to understand and some of the information is irrelevant to a introductory chemistry class. Shows no work and examples are all over the place.
it is SO BAD, i wanna give him a zero. but that's not possible, so i give him a one.
DO NOT TAKE. the midterm is impossible to pass, they tell you that from the start, and it's worth 30% of your grade. There's no periodic table or equation sheet, you must remember everything. The final for us is a verbal quiz. There's homework every day and he goes over the slides so fast and you cant write the slides as he talks.
The other reviews here are not exaggerating--Bartels is atrocious. Group homeworks require background in sheets/excel for an A. Midterm is impossible. No periodic table, no formulas, almost 0 study materials. Average for my class was 30%. No curve given. 10% attempt penalty on graded homework. Doing well is a matter of luck, not hard work.
Do not take his class! Class average on the midterm was 30% with a CURVE. There is no way to figure out your grade and he tells you to refer to the syllabus, where it is not clear. This class made me so stressed out and hurt my GPA. I put a lot of effort but he sets us up to fail. Nothing makes sense. If you are in an LC, drop his class.
DO NOT TAKE. He is an extremely harsh grader and his tests don't reflect his lectures. He assigns daily hw even on weekends and holidays and they are all due at random times. He has 1 TA that grades all of his students exam. He will hardly curve and overall just is a bad experience taking his class.
AWFUL! Avoid him at all costs please, legit drop him if you sign up for his class. Homework assignments are due at random times, group homework is unnecessarily difficult, no study guide for midterm that is MOST OF YOUR GRADE, and the final oral is only 10%. Truly, get out while you can.
Please do not take his class at all. Had so much stress from just this one class. Midterms and final are unfair. Homework is very messy. Have to be on top of everything to do well in the class. Do not put yourself through the stress it is so not worth it. Group HW is just another added and unnecessary stress. There are much better professors.
Very hard class. Would not recommend. The final is jeopardy based. Really hated this class lmao
his lectures were too fast, not detailed, gave too many group discussion assignments with no rubric, the hw were daily and given out and due at random times (2pm or 12am,,it varied). don't take his class unless you have a great SI leader or someone else to teach you
I dropped after 2 lectures and am SO glad I did. Everyone I knew either failed or withdrew. He was super rude if you asked for help, he makes the in-class polls IMPOSSIBLE and refuses to use new/better tech like canvas. First discussion section he made us do some absurd assignment involving content well beyond our POSSIBLE understanding. DROP HIM.
I swear to god half these awful reviews are just people to didn't study and failed the class and are now taking out their anger on rate my professor. If you pay attention, DON'T PROCRASTINATE the homework and attention lecture, you'll literally be fine. And he curves the midterm by like 20 points which is a lot!
the absolute worst professor I've ever had, this is not an exaggeration. His class is set up to make you fail, assigns random assignments at 4 am and expects you to complete by 12 pm, gave 0 study materials, tests were impossible, average on exams was 30% with a curve. If I could go back and drop the class I would, I regret taking this class.
Professor Bartels made CHEM 001A, an entry-level general chemistry class, unnecessarily hard through his grading on a midterm that costs 30% of a student's grade and a horrid oral final. We covered content that related more towards organic chemistry and upper-division chemistry classes. Please avoid him at all costs.
Bartels teaches very broadly the concepts involved in chemistry more than the problem solving aspect of it. Because of that, you're expected to understand and sketch the various models taught in his class. His grading criteria is unclear and he's pretty inaccessible but he provides a huge safety net that allows you to maintain a solid grade.
Horrid
took him winter 2023 & his class was honestly a mess. try to avoid this class bc he doesn't prep u for 1B. however he curves his class and prioritizes hw (at least 6 assignments per week) so i think its pretty easy to pull out an A if u do everything required. class is more memorization than actual learning (especially for the midterm)
lots of busy work for this quiz but it isnt impossible. he gives you two chances to get a good score on midterm (practice vs actual) which is useful and recycles info from past exams. hw isnt hard theres a lot, and 5 group projects. ask the TA's what theyre looking for in those assignments. making friends is crucial for group work & has clicker pts
honestly would not take him again. rude during office hours and class was confusing af. slides were really outdated too.
Just completely disorganized. Published homework at random hours of the day (and night), lectures were quick and not entirely useful for understanding test content. Get ready to teach yourself the class and to get to know your TA very well.
Hello fellow students and teachers. I am a person that rarely holds a grudge however after taking Ludwig Bartel's Chemistry class, I have never felt such strong hatred for a person. I didn't realize struggling in an introductory chemistry course was possible, but it was horrid. The amount of times I have felt hopeless in his class was uncountable.
HIS TEACHING STYLE IS HORRIBLE AND COMPLETELY FAILS TO PREPARE US FOR BOTH THE MIDTERM AND CHEM 1B. GG gl my fellow students who are about to take his class. Better start praying once u realize u have him.
Just be prepared and organized. Homework could come daily or not you never know with him.
This professor makes me want to go to a community college. His lectures were completely different from what was asked on midterms and finals. There are clicker questions during class from material that is worth most of your grade. He refused to answer questions in class or emails, and is rude during office hours. Attendance is mandatory.
Just awful.
Very confusing and vague on what is to be tested on. Please avoid it at all cost, taking chem another time to avoid him is worth not suffering in his class.
R U N
Group homework, midterms, and final were brutal, its possible to pass with a decent grade. As he states in his syllabus, more friends you have in lecture, better possibility you'll pass. For his midterm, please practice the midterm he posts, and GO TO ARC! Overall he does care about his students and their future. Good luck! & (GET TO KNOW UR TA TOO)!
wasn't too difficult except for the clickers (pop quizzes), midterm is easy if you review previous midterms + he curves it by 20 pts, group work was pretty easy too except for the excel sheet one, assigns daily homework which is more tedious than difficult, he has multiple extra credit opportunities, and final is a short presentation worth 10%
Required to buy online homework, he uploads homework whenever he wants. Can upload hw on holidays or at odd hours. Has clicker questions in class that can tank your grade if you do poorly, not enough time. Hard midterm. Go to OH for extra cred! Don't take if you don't study. Teaches as if you already know the content. Oral final. Lectures quickly.
STAY AWAY NOT WORTH THE HEADACJE
He's just terrible. Disrespectful to students who reach out for help and doesn't know how to teach properly. He acts as if you already know everything about chemistry??? I surprised he hasn't gotten fired by how rude he is and gets pure joy from seeing students suffer in his class..
I thought the reviews here was lying, but THEY ARE NOT LYING. He just mumbles most of the time, and acts like you already had knowledge in chemistry. Attendance is only mandatory because of the random multiple-choice questions and drawing (yes, you have to draw) during lecture.
The worst professor ever. one of the homework assignments, he wants you to teach 12 questions. that's literally your job to teach not us. he's proud to fail students?
Gave a midterm nothing like the practice mid term
Terrible professor. Assigns homework at random times and has it due at random times. Material that he teaches is barely reflective of what's on the midterm. Goes through the lectures at an extremely fast pace which makes it diffcult to copy notes. The only thing saving his job is the curve that he gives for his midterm. Do not take this class!!
run if you can please
Do not take this class if you are planning on doing a lot of units, the amount of work he assigns is abhorrent; online homework assigned at random times "daily", clickers done in class, entirely free response midterm and group projects. It's just way too much for an INTRODUCTORY course. If he taught well maybe it would be more manageable, but no.
As someone who also came from a "competitive high school" and took hl ib chem, this class was worse than the 15 page essay I had to write for that ib class. If 1 person slacks off for the group HW u get a C or lower and he assigns daily HW even during weekends/holidays. Would read off slides hella quick and refused to talk to students during OH
people who wrote bad reviews dont know how to study . class was not hard like people said, I pulled off an A without studying 24/7. I attended office hours and put in some effort. learn to put in effort and not expect everything to be handed to you, its college, wake up. the practice midterm was easy, got an a+, otherwise, everything is manageable.
and to mention, the midterm and practice midterm all came from his slides, ALL CAME FROM HIS SLIDES, and the past midterms. people saying the midterm/practice midterm had nothing to do with lecture is completely lying.
Those who dislike him probably didn't try much. His class is doable as long as you put the effort, he provides multiple extra credit opportunities, gives you 2 tries for the midterm, and gives you a practice one beforehand. His teaching maybe a little complicated but if you review lecture slides after class you'll be fine. READ THE SYLLABUS.
LOVED BARTELS. He makes intro to chemistry so interesting. Easy to pass with an A+ if you study and tell your group to do all their parts during discussion. Dont slack off! Study his past exams and you'll do fine!!! Loved going to his office hours :) Try to go when he's alone for the best explanations! ARC, OH and SI are your best friends!
He taught us quantum mechanics on day one gen chem. GO TO CLASS AND DO THE CLICKER QUESTIONS AND DO ALL OF THE HOMEWORK!! When it comes down to it, those WILL make or break your grade. Oral final but he posts the slides on his website beforehand, look midterms up online (he repeats them). You'll be ok.
I took him in Fall 2020 and am now a medical student. I wanted to leave this review to say that his class sucks, he sucks, and anyone who says that people who complain about Bartels are stupid are wrong. He is a horrible man and professor who almost derailed my career before it began. Genuinely the worst tw
Everyone complaining is exaggerating, just work for your grade like you're supposed to. Homework assigns daily however it takes 5 mins max. Do ALL clicker questions and try. Group hw is graded as a group not individually like he says. Practice midterm and final study guides are exactly how the midterm and final will be but with different numbers.
Bartels makes intro chem engaging. Put in effort - study past exams, use ARC/OH/SI, and try unstuckstudy for prep. With the right approach, an A+ is achievable.
Had him in winter 2024. Attend his lectures, do clicker questions, homework, & practice his sample midterms, you will do great. He gives two tries for the midterm, a practice one & a real one,try your best on the practice because he will take ur best grade from the two(it also has less material). He posts the slides for the final beforehand too.
Had him for chem1A and B, and honestly he's not THAT BAD. Was it easy? No. Would I want him again? Absolutely not. But most of the difficulty I had was from my own bad habits and spacing out when the lectures got hard. Force yourself to have discipline and you'll easily pass, but you'll be cursing him and his DAILY HW the whole time.
Ludwig M. Bartels. I cannot even describe how much I do not like him. No words. He literally puts ochem questions even though its GENERAL CHEMISTRY 001A. EMPHASIS ON 1A. I am literally just a first year trying to have a good college experience. but no! he assigns hw that are due on test days. not to mention he grades hard. let's do better ludwig
RUN RUN AWAAAAAY
I learned more from studying on my own than from class. Lectures lacked flow, focused on irrelevant details, and missed key concepts. Midterms didn't reflect my knowledge, with random questions. Grading was inconsistent, and homework offered little value. Smartwork reminders were unreliable. Overall, I was disappointed.
I hate this guy. Makes an entry level class a million time harder than it ever needs to be. Everything I learned from this class was from my own studying, lectures make no sense. Just read the textbook because that where he gets his lecture material from anyways. Make sure to look up past midterm questions and study those, or drop the class.
so much homework. there's one every day due at 2pm or 11pm i set an alarm to remind myself to check it. went to office hours and he was never there it was just TA's who were really nice but couldn't help. do all ways to make up points possible. half the class failed the midterm. hope to never see him again xoxo
Genuinely the worst professor and teacher I've ever gotten. If you were put in his class cause of an LC I suggest dropping it cause this class is terrible. Don't listen to the 5 star ratings, you genuinely won't learn a single thing in this class and the way his tests are set up will make you want to drop out entirely. 0 booms
Straight A's before this class. If you don't have to take this class then don't. TA's were okay. Make sure to study because he does post stuff to prepare you but the grading is what makes passing this class difficult.
Bartels is literally the greatest of all time!!
Listen, Bartels class is just one of those classes where you have to know how to take his tests. He gives a practice midterm and a real one and you keep the one with the best score. The final is oral but he posts the questions so you can study them and prepare. Study the slides, participate in homework, clickers, and you will be just fine.
TERRIBLE. you will not learn anything. use chatgpt + google for in class clickers and smartworks. look his midterms up bc he repeats questions. he was never at office hours so i got a lot of help from ARC, chemlibretexts, and youtube. had a whole academic misconduct scandal over a class groupchat be wary about joining class discord.
Had Bartels for 1A and 1B. The class is definitely passable. From my experience, the 1st practice midterm is always very similar to the actual one but the 2nd midterm is different. So please do good on the 1st one and save yourself the stress later on. Has SmartWork due at random times which is annoying but just check everyday including weekends.
I would best recommend to avoid this professor. While I was able to achieve an A-, I would not recommend this as an intro to chemistry course. Here are some tips to succeed if you must take him; take notes and submit them to get extra clicker points, make the max videos to get points, study your butt off for the midterms and the final is all slides
Stay away, if you can't here is a guide to pass - Do every smart work/online hw and try to get 100% - Go to class to do the clickers if you miss one, do an EC opportunity (notes/video) get 100% on clickers - STUDY for midterms (both) 1st is easier - WORK on those group hw (not graded individually) - Final is exactly like the slides - Pray
Do every homework assignment there is. Grade scale is super weird but as long as you get A's on everything aside from the midterm you'll be okay. Final is oral and if you're good at memorizing and start studying right after the midterm you'll get an A.
just horrible. take any other prof.
I get it, why the 5 stars? Because he's the easiest A if you do a few things. Chatgpt every clicker (he gives you no time) Hard carry group projects. Study the first midterm hard, and work through each problem twice. Also chatgpt it. It's an exact copy. Lowkey yap on the oral final. Cry, because his lectures are trash. Do this, guaranteed A or B
Ok yes he's awful, BUT you can get an A EASY! Literally just try. 1st midterm is an EXACT copy of the practice, just memorize it then don't worry about the 2nd. Google the clickers (FAST), google the hw, do your group hw, and pray you do better than the person taking the oral final with you (he says it's not a competition but it totally is)! GL
Trust the bad reviews. He is extremely hard for a gen chem professor. He teaches it like an upper-division & his midterms are all free response. but if he's your only option, his class is definitely passable if you keep up with the clickers, group projects, and everyday homeworks. Even if you get 60% on his exams, the busywork can save you.
avoid this teacher omg
The worst professor I've had! There are clickers every lecture, Smart work assignments almost everyday, group homework for the first few weeks of the quarter, a practice mid-term, real mid-term, and an oral final. His mid-terms is ALL free-response question so its you know it or you don't. He runs it like a upper-div class. Avoid this professor!
Dont do it
This professor is single-handedly the worst professor I have ever had. He is not accommodating whatsoever, the coursework is daily with no exceptions, and he has no remorse for his students. He is quite boring in lecture, hard to understand, and goes through the content too quickly for you to keep up. He teaches you absolutely nothing.
He is the worst chem professor I ever had. He was not accommodating. There are clickers in lectures that are 20 seconds each, so it's better to use GPT. He posts smartwork everyday due at random times, sometimes he accidentally made it due in 11:59 EST. The group homeworks has nothing to do with the class.
Doesn't know how to teach and expects you to know everything. Midterms are free response. He wants you to memorize element formulas, know how to create and balance equations, etc. His midterms are very hard and his final is an oral exam. He has hw everyday and has clickers (polls) in lecture, which are points that count to your grade.
no, just no.
I have never, ever been so defeated by a course. Bartels expects you to dedicate your entire bloodline to him. He is constantly assigning HW, group projects are awful, and his website is annoying, plus the final is verbal. There are group projects every single week. Pls save yourself and take this course with someone else if he is your only option.
I honestly would say unlike all other comments on his RMP he is actually a good proffessor if you aren't lazy. I swear like if you pay somewhat decent attention in class go to office hours, and talk both with him and the TA's often you will pass this course. You just need to be on top of things like homework and group projects if you want an A.
The people who say that "it's not that hard", "just don't be lazy" are bootlickers. He is the worst possible professor and his grading system is absolute garbage. If you MUST take him, study hard for BOTH midterms. One is easier, but you won't know which one. Get 100% clickers, 100% on HW and you can pass. TA's are not helpful. Yt is ur BSF. pray.
The worst Professor I've ever had. He is not a bad lecturer, but the structure of the course is infuriating. If you can ace all the busy work, do alright on the oral final, and get at least a C- on the midterm, you can get a B/B+. But the midterm is worth too much, and if you study the wrong practice midterms (like I did), you won't get an A.
