Mind opening class. Should be required.
Luis is a babe. All his examples relate to sex and sexual innuendos. Lectures are VERY dry, but his sense of humor is awesome. Exams kind of throw you off though, because he never REALLY specifies what you should get out of his lectures. Take the class for a good time
Luis is awesome! His Sociology of the Body course has been my absolute favorite class at UM. He can be a little scatter-brained when it comes to dealing with assignments, but other than that I have no complaints. I wish I'd known about him sooner.
Hes pretty interesting but I dont know how much I learned from him...
Good professor but the class grader left a lot to be desired. She rarely came to class and thus was not the best at grading journals. Also, directions for assignments could have been more clear.
Very nice person and good instructor.
His lectures are sometimes boring but he is a funny guy that likes to talk about sex. The course isn't very rigorous either.
His lectures during the first half of the semester were significantly more interesting. After the midterm, he got kind of boring and less people started attending. His assignments and his exams are extremely fair, and it's not necessary to attend lectures. Overall, I reccomend the class.
Funny guy with lots of interesting stories that relate to the course. However, as the semester wore on his lectures became kind of dull. Overall, a very interesting and mind-opening course and prof.
While his lectures were clear, he was not a particularly engaging professor -- subject matter of lecture was very tepid and superficial (which is really more a function of it being an intro class), and what he asked of GSI's for discussion ended up being very inconsequential as far as what I took away from the class in the end. Not recommended.
Good teacher, funny, enjoyable class... WARNING, you either get dr.jeckel or mr.hyde. By this I mean, if he teaches from the book it is horrible, and other days he has engaging open class discussion... flip of a coin, but a good prof.
His lectures were interesting, but worthless to the course. I thought the exams were a little ridiculous considering the information presented in lecture.
Many of his lectures are taught directly from the textbook, so if you read along, it is not always necessary to attend. Often, instead of talking about the material or ideas, he opens up the class to discussion and the same people talk every week. Overall, the class was pretty easy though.
I loved the course. It wasn't all that difficult, but I learned ALOT. The "Family Project" is great as long as you put thought into it. Just remember to learn the stats he gives along with theories he presents and you'll do great. The days he opens the floor to discussions are alot of fun.
excellent.
Very great and interesting person. He is a great lecturer!

The professor was very nice, friendly, fair, and flexible. Because it's an introductory SOC class, the material is boring. However, he does a good job of adding real-life examples and his own views into the lectures. Two easy exams and four easy papers, and you don't have to go to lecture. Just make sure you understand the main ideas for the exams.
great professor!!! i wont forget
Easy class. Lectures are quite interesting and basis for the exams. Journal entries are fairly open ended, and can be rewritten for a higher grade (but doubtful you will have to). Definately a class i would recommend.
Really great class. It's interesting, lectures are engaging, and tests are very easy. As long as you go to lecture or read the lecture slides that he always posts online, it will be very hard not to get an A.
Luis has a very unclear teaching style and doesn't focus at all on class structure. Our class was confused about mid-terms, assignments, and due dates. Topics were so obvious, should be an intro course, not 400-level. Waste of my time, even when I was interested in the class, Luis rambles with incomprehensible rants that don't teach anything.
Although I heard the class was "sooo easy," I found the exams challenging. The multiple choice is really easy, but the easy were in depth and harshly graded.
Pretty easy overall. I never even bought the book, but I studied his lecture slides pretty well. Essays on exams weren't graded that easily, but multiple choice was pretty easy. I was also lucky to have a great GSI.
this class was supposed to be easy but it was far too detailed. Luis would just read from lecture slides in class and it was hard to pay attention when he is just reading verbatim. the exams were too detailed for the amount of information covered. my GSI was horrible so that also contributed to my distaste for the class
It was called soc of sexuality so i thought the topic was interesting but i don't love the way he does his lectures. He doesn't give out the power point before lectures so you are pretty bored and don't pay attention. He is very sweet and will do anything to help you. If you want an A, do the readings, without them you can still get an A-/B+.
Ridiculously easy. In fact, im in class right now. really boring and pointless class. This class just teaches you obvious things but gives them fancy names.
Would recommend to anyone. If you don't want to work much, don't have to (for like a B+/A-). However, if you want to really get something out of it, the class can be very rewarding. Never seen him read verbatim from slides, and I've had him 3 times. If you want to know what a great teacher/person he is, go to his office hours.
class is pretty easy. did not go to 1 lecture all year--however you can easily study for midterm and final based on lecture slides and skimming the textbook. multiple choice very easy on exams, but essay sections are worth majority of test and are graded very strictly! also, professor younis is not eager to help students, did not respond to 1 emaiL
He is a genuinely nice person and goes out of his way to help you. He has a good sense of humor and does a great job making material engaging. The class is very fair, not to mention easy. His exams cover a lot of the reading material and effort is more important than ability. Luis cares a lot about students and wants them to learn. Take him!
Luis is a genuinely nice guy. He's easy to talk to and willing to help outside of class. Exams are generally easy...helps if you read the stories since not all GSIs cover them in discussion. You can really get a lot out of this class if you go to lecture to listen to and care about what Luis has to say.
Luis has a fantastic way of communicating difficult subjects to students of various backgrounds. He gives you the information, but you have to be the adult and process it yourself. Don't let some dull whiners spoil the class for you, he's a wonderful asset to UM. You'll learn more about families and US society than in any other class!
easiest class you'll take...do the CTool readings, go to section and skim through the lecture slides he posts online and there's no reason why you shouldn't get the A
There is a lot of reading, make sure you do them they are a large portion of the exams. Luis is very interesting and has a great sense of humor. He enjoys bringing up sex whenever possible.
Not a good professor I didn't think. The class is kind of interesting and all but his lectures did not correspond well with the exams and because his lectures have absolutely no structure, no one knew waht to study. He talks about sex a lot.
I don't know why this prof has such good ratings- this class was hard! Way too much reading and all of it was dumb. Lecture was stupid and useless, you will learn far more from discussion sections. Exams were difficult and the short answer Q's were graded harshly. Attend your GSI's office hours because they're the ones that will make your grade.
This class is pretty easy, but also pretty boring. Lectures aren't structured and often seem irrelevant. The reading matters for the exams, so you have to do it, but you can get an A without attending lecture. Exams were graded kind of harshly, but GSIs ended up adding points to everyone for a curve.
I loved this class! Luis is super funny and he has a lot of valuable insight. I learned a lot of valuable information. I would definitely recommend this class because it's interesting and very easy. It's true that you don't have to attend lecture, but i found his lectures to be super interesting. in conclusion, i love luis and the best gsi is jess!
Good and sometimes interesting lectures, straight forward tests, great into to sociology.
Great professor, last lecture was actually today. Learned A LOT and very interesting and thought provoking. Would definitely recommend to anyone. As far as grading goes, 2 tests and 2 exercise papers. I found that if you stay true to yourself and the course and put in the appropriate time, then soc100 will be a memorable course. Thanks Luis!
Fairly easy class. There were a lot of readings but to be honest I didn't read many of them. There are really easy assignments due each week. Other than that I didn't do a lot for the class besides study a few days before the exam. Luis is a really nice guy but the lectures were often boring and no one really seemed to pay attention.
Extremely interested/passionate and thought provoking teacher. Class assignments were generally easy but there was quite a bit of reading. Exams tended to have some very picky questions as well as common sense ones, so make reading the material thoroughly is a priority.
This was a pathetic excuse for a university course. The professor reduces provocative and highly nuanced articles into an idiotic series of multiple-choice questions. He is either lazy or believes his students to be imbeciles incapable of understanding gender-theory at the collegiate level. U of M should be embarrassed at this joke of a "course."
OK class. You have to be VERY interested in animal rights. Way to much reading, you have to read it all to be able to take the tests, which are quite hard. I would suggest it for those really interested in the subject. Grading can be ambiguous..I did all the reading at got a B+ but most people got B, B-s
Luis was nice and passionate. While it was quite a decent chunk of reading, I found that it was not necessary to read all of anything. just skim the articles for a general understanding and that should be enough. exams are all mult. choice. You learned a lot only if you chose to and went to lectures. Easy A as long as you give even some effort.
WONDERFUL professor! Very passionate & engaging. Truly a life-changing semester for me in his class! Exams are a breeze if you do the readings (at least get a general idea of what they're about), go to class (1 or 2 questions specifically from examples he gives aloud), & study the slides. The other 40% of your grade is up to your GSI. Thumbs up!
Do the readings, go to class, and enjoy the class. He is one of the best professors I've had at UM, but alot of people did not like how he structured exams. I studied very hard and knew the material, but still got questions wrong.
Loveddd Luis! He was super excited about every topic. I wasn't too thrilled about this class but ended up really enjoying it. As long as you do the readings and understand the main idea, you will do fine.
By far, my favorite class of the semester. Luis is the best professor I've ever had; he's interesting, hilarious, and is so knowledgeable about sociology. Just do the readings for the class and you'll be fine. Although going to lecture isn't necessary, I would definitely recommend going anyway just to listen to Luis!
Luis really knows what he's talking about and is passionate about the subject. Make sure you do all the readings, because that's what you discuss in sections. The lectures line up really well with the readings. And Luis does a great job explaining everything. I def recommend this class to anyone! Luis will go out of his way to help you!
The class is interesting a majority of the time & the exams are easy since pwrpoints are posted online.
Great Professor!! So passionate, sweet, funny and interesting. He actually WANTS you to succeed. I recommend any class taught by him.
Luis is a super nice guy and genuinely cares about his students' success. Although the material and readings were extremely interesting, the exams were difficult and extremely specific. I don't think anybody in the class thought the exams were easy. However, students can do extra credit to boost their grade.
He is the greatest professor in the world! learned so much in his class and it was super easy!
Great professor, and I learned a lot from this class. I highly recommend him.
I have taken 6 classes with him and I have loved every one! They are very discussion based and interesting. You will love him!
Honestly, there's no better way to put it except that professor Luis is great! The workload for the class is VERY managable and yet you still learn so much interesting information. He is highly knowledgable about many topics and very enthusiastic to spread what he knows to his students. I plan on taking more classes with him in the future!
This professor is awful. His class is pretty easy, but he is so disorganized and NEVER responds to emails. He takes attendance in lecture which are pretty boring. His online exams are worded horribly and many of the questions are confusing. He's not helpful in office hours either because he likes to rush people out.
Luis is such a great professor. Very knowledgeable. I highly recommend him. All the readings were online and are not too exhaustingly long. All his exams were also online. They are a bit hard, but very manageable. Overall, great course.
AMAZING! so easy but I learned a lot - we watched documentaries that really changed my perspective. He's hilarious and super chill but also respectful of the issues covered. The history part tends to be boring, but its no where near as bad as other classes.
He's great! Really laid back and funny. He incorporated his own family into examples of concepts in lecture. Grade= 4 multiple choice exams--lowest dropped, attendance, and "family stories project" that was actually really enjoyable. Take a class with him!!
Very nice man. After taking Marriage & Family with Luis, I decided to major in sociology myself. His lectures really peaked my interest in sociology. He is a very kind man, and fills his lectures with jokes. He loves asking students their take on an issue during lecture, and then builds off of what they say.
Very easy
Terrible professor. He's late to class, doesn't let others share their opinions, and talks about sex for most of the class. I missed one class due to illness all semester and was given a D for participation. I hate sociology now thanks to him. Please do not waste your money.
Lecture-wise, Luis is pretty decent. Engaging, passionate, ect, BUT the exams: worth 60% of the grade, & seemed to be written by high schoolers. The questions didn't test learned concepts, but were rather a weird mix between nitpicky [irrelevant] details of the readings, and broad common sense questions that test nothing learned. Just... terrible.
Doesn't respond to emails, answers his phone in class multiple times a session, never once updated grades until the last couple weeks of class, slams on attendance (this is college, it should be my choice to come, I'm paying the bill!), lectures from PPs which are posted online, spews his political views, Overall USELESS. Do not recommend!
The content of his lectures is very interesting, and clear. He often tends to go off-topic but in general I believe he is a good lecturer. However, he is VERY disorganised and his exams really do not test your knowledge, but instead your ability to memorise stuff out of the readings. His exams are very difficult (in SOC100) and practically useless
Luis is easily the most biased prof I've ever had. His lectures are so steeped in his opinions that you won't be able to separate course facts from his opinions. He also answers his phone during lecture and brings his daughter in all the time. DON'T take a class with him
Professor Sfeir-Younis is a good speaker but a poor instructor. His exams are very poorly written and many questions are opinion-based. Probably best to agree with instructors' opinions in papers and the essay part of the exams as well. Professor answers phone mid-lecture and occasionally allows daughter to run around the room. Quite distracting
Luis is an extraordinary instructor. He will challenge your preconceived notions and bring you to a new a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Do not expect the standard brain-dead lecture, because you won't get it. Engage, exchange, explore yourself and your neighbor. This class linked up with a U in Columbia and was fascinating!
I've only just had my first mid-term, but I find his lectures really entertaining. Really glad I took his class because I was just interested in knowing if I was into sociology or not, and not I think I am!
Luis is a god, he's done literally everything ever.
Luis is an excellent teacher. I have learned so much from this class. I will definitely take more sociology classes. He is very opinionated but most points I agree with. The test are okay, the wording is difficult. How prepared you are for the exam depends on your gsi and you. I had a bad gsi but many others who had different gsi's did good.
Worst class I have ever taken. Whoever said earlier that tests have opinion-based questions was right. If you want to pass, you better think exactly like him. Tests were also laced with multiple spelling errors that I was honestly surprised to see coming from a college professor. Lectures were extremely boring and he always went off on tangents
Prof Sfeir- Younis created a classroom were not only were students allowed to be rude and disrespectful to one another, but were encouraged to do so. He would go on hour long tangents that had absolutely no relevance to the course. YOU CANNOT MISS CLASS! I would not recommend taking a course with this man EVER! Easily the worst class I've taken.
I absolutely loved Luis. The topic of the class was very interesting and I feel like it made me a better person in terms of how I view other people. Luis opens your eyes to so many things that everyone should be aware of. There are not too many readings, but they can be a little long sometimes, and it's not absolutely crucial to read them.
This class is all about reading: reading assignments, powerpoints after he posts them and small details from discussions. Lectures aren't very clear and what he talks about doesn't line up with slides. So some things he never discusses and you will still be tested on it. Very interesting guy with amazing stories, don't think he is a great professor
I was disappointed by the class. The material is repetitive, one-sided, and focuses entirely on female issues; Luis is a good lecturer, but tends to lecture more on his beliefs than the material. Every lecturereading is a variation of: "Everyone was liberated and happy until the 19th century, when the patriarchy ruined women's lives forever."
He was one of the most inspirational professors I have ever had. Don't miss out on an opportunity to take a class with Luis and get to know him personally. I am definitely taking more classes with him before I graduate.
This professor goes off on tangents very easily. He covers all the concepts that are necessary to pass, but all of it is buried in strange anecdotes that do not actually relate to sociology. His class is fairly easy to succeed in, but definitely not the best that I have taken.
Readings and lectures were not integrated, he was very off topic and used anecdotal evidence - a no no in my opinion when it comes to sociology. His class made me uncomfortable with many of the things he discussed. He did not prepare us for exams, he would say one thing and the test would be another. Super long (online) readings.
He is a great professor and a great person. I loved this class so much I wish I could make everyone take it. If you are not happy with your grade he will let you do extra work to improve it . There are quizzes on the readings, but the reading were very interesting. He also lets all the wait listed students in lol
Really fun and interesting class. It is what you make of it, and if you really want to learn expect to do lots of reading. Tests are extremely easy, and lectures are pretty neat. Lots of exciting topics are covered and Luis always has some cool stories to share. Not at all difficult.
Really enjoyed coming to lecture every single day. Lectures were inspiring and presented so many new viewpoints to a variety of different subjects. Love the stories and the way the material is taken--would take classes just for this professor.
ATTENDANCE! I cannot stress this enough! For every test there is extra credit opportunities. The only test I thought was hard was the first test but other than that it was an easy class. The lectures can drag on every now and again but he is very kind and cares a lot about the course and his students.
Best professor I had while at UofM. Thats all I have to say
SO BORING. Lectures are dull and Luis LOVES to talk about sex for some reason. The tests are incredibly hard, even after studying the lecture slides. There is an insane amount of reading that is necessary to do well on the exams. People think of this as a blow off intro course, but it most definitely is not.
Loved Luis and his class was easy to pass as long as you show up for lecture and discussion -- the readings helped but discussion was more valuable to me
Loved this class and did not find it difficult -- he's a great professor
Loved Luis and learned a lot! I really respect him and the tests aren't too tough.
Don't get me wrong, Luis is a really nice guy. However, the research that we discuss in this class is EXTREMELY outdated. There are typos throughout many of the slides and on the exams which is unprofessional and distracting in my opinion. It's an easy class to get through but don't expect to get an A.
This guy is very left-wing - borderline radical - and it shows. Some of the stuff he teaches is very political and heavily cherrypicked.
He is a nice person very interested in social issues. The thing I dislike the most about his classes are that he lectures off of PowerPoints, but then goes on huge rants that do not relate to the content. He also gives out a lot of reading. However, the midterm was online, mult. choice, and take home.
Luis is very passionate about what he teaches, but it is clear he teaches his opinion and chooses readings that support this. The exams were online, but I found them difficult because often multiple choice answers were very similar. He tends to go on tangents in lecture making it difficult to pick out what info is relevant.
Really great professor. He can be a little explicit, but he gives you warnings ahead of time. He's really cool and laid back. Tries to make personal relationship with students. Great person to talk to in office hours!
This professor is amazing. He teaches based more off experience not based off straight notes. I gain so much from all of his lectures. I've never been more intrigued by a teacher and his stories than him.
I took his Soc 100 and it was basically the reason I picked Soc as my major. Soc 207 did the opposite. I came to the boring lectures, took notes, did the readings, but still wasn't prepared at all for the exams. They had questions from optional readings, were opinion-based, and some just had wrong answers. Extra-Credit saved my grade.
I was ill most of the semester I had taken SOCL 205, but I averaged a 96% on exams and projects. I spoke with Luis and he told me on THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS he would not factor in my Attendance and Participation. He ends up factoring it in anyways and I get a C+, tried emailing him 5 separate times with zero responses, avoid him at all cost.
Luis means well and is a nice dude. His lectures were kind of boring and he often went on personal tangents. The class had three online exams, timed with one book anthology. The exams weren't that hard, but definitely don't go into them without going over reading and lectures or you won't do good. While he's a nice guy, I would not recommend.
There's no textbook, but there are online readings before every class. Sometimes there are two and they tend to be difficult to understand. He summarizes most in lecture. I would strongly recommend setting a couple hours aside of the weekend for that weeks readings. The test material comes more from readings than lecture slides.
Honestly one of the sweetest men I have ever met in my life. He is so interested in everything he teaches that he could stand in front of the class and talk about his life and how it relates to sociology for hours. He wants everyone to do well in his classes and believes exams are a stupid way to judge one's grade and always offers help.
Luis is a nice person, but insanely unorganized. The syllabus was released incredibly late, lectures are often out of order, and Luis goes on unrelated tangents in almost every class period. All the exams are online and take-home, but are still very unpredictable and disproportionate to the focuses of the course. He does not respond to email.
Avoid him at all cost. Never responds to email and simply likes to talk about his own life. Does not care about his students. Probably the worst professor at U of M
He's so sweet and such a great prof but you have to do well on the exams or else you're screwed
He does not practice "transmission" teaching (where teacher gives knowledge and students receive). He practices "transformational" teaching. Look up the differences between the two to see if it is your cup of tea. Odds are if someone complains about him, it is because they are used to the thinking being done for them. Luis challenges his students.
Avoid at all costs. Unorganized, lazy and his "story telling style of teaching" is bs, he just gets up in front of the class and talks about whatever pops into his head. I learned little to nothing in this class and was always extremely frustrated with him, the gsi and the entire course. I wish I never wouldve taken his class
Luis has very thorough knowledge in the discipline of Sociology, however the tests complicate fairly easy concepts. They are based mostly on the readings, which I found difficult being that many of them were quite lengthy and it was therefore difficult to know what was expected. Definitely be prepared to read for this class.
Lectures are pretty much worthless. He's a really good story tell and is super nice, but tends to go on tangents. You don't have to go to lecture, but you do have to do the readings and go to section if you want to pass.
He doesn't seem to care very much about teaching, or the subject of Sociology. He disappeared for 2 weeks, which we spent watching random documentaries. The first exam was mostly quotes straight from the readings, but the next exam was much easier. Lecture was pretty pointless, and discussion taught me a lot. All you need to pass is a good GSI.
Luis really cares about the material, which translates into his lectures. He ties in personal anecdotes which made Soc a lot more interesting for me. However, there was literally zero engagement in any of his lectures so if you're prone to falling asleep in class, I would stay away from this professor.
Really, really straight forward class. Exams were pretty heavily focused on the readings though, so be prepared to read for this class. Lectures were alright, he would post slides online though so they were pretty optional. I was left frustrated with lack on engagement/ability by my GSI though. Still, you should get an A with minimum effort.
Really nice guy, lectures can get really boring. All exams were online and taken at home and you can use your notes and powerpoints.
Very nice caring guy. Lectures can be somewhat boring. Doesnt give much work so the only thing you have in the grade book are tests and the final paper. Tests werent too bad, if you take the notes youll do fine
