very nice, easy, clear
He's one of the best math profs I've had

I like graphs
Go Luis! He rules, so nice to his students!
doesn't care about his students, don't care to teach, only care about reasearch
he was very lively but also a bit of a scatterbrain ... hard to follow
Very nice, helpful, and fun!
he doesn't know what he is doing, make stuff more confusing, make silly jokes
Great doode

he's not that hard for the exam, but for lecture...
He's definately all about research and not about teaching... Goofy as hell and knows his stuff... Always tardy and bumpin' into things... BADEE BADEE BADEE!
good teacher.. he kept me awake every morning for 8:30 lecture. sometimes he's a little hard to follow.. but he keeps it interesting.
Great Teacher!!
He makes so many mistakes it's not even funny.. one per lecture on average. He's a good guy though, just a bit scatterbrained. I hope I don't have him for MATH 152 next semester...
Extremely disorganized, always late and makes a tremendous amount of mistakes during lecture. Definitely not the best person to be teaching math.
he is a good prof. he does make mistakes while teaching but i m ok with tht. but if u see the test he prepare, wht the hell... everything outside the book. questions are given which u haven't even seen b4. TA look 4 the final answer.no part marking.
Really enjoys graph theory. Funny and engaging.
His writing makes it hard to follow. He needs to improve his ogranizational skills but a very nice goofy guy.
Notes are vague, disorganized and hard to follow.
mamma mia, this guy is nuts!!!! totally disorganized, which is NOT good for a first year course!!! exams are whacked!
This prof is not recommanded
not recommended...the thing i like about him is when he says "ARRRGGGHH" when he makes mistakes...
i think the prof is pretty good ... just he makes mistakes sometimes. i think he midterms and finals r not that bad.
BAD BAD Prof, mistakes never end, very unclear, tries to make things simple but instead confuses you more. Tests are fair but he doesn't know how to teach!
Horrible prof! His bouncing around the room is extremely distracting. Tests are easy, but the averages are so high that you can't get a good grade. Avoid him if at all possible.
VERY VERY VERY VERY nice professor
He tries to make the material more approachable to the non-math ppl but it didn't turn out well. He worries too much about the colour of pens than the material. Should post assignment solutions. Terrible text, prof who doesn't communicate the material well, great TA though.
Nice personality but teaches horribly.
He is a horrible teacher, makes lots of mistakes, sucks in explaining problems.
Nice guy, but.... he is LATE for EVERY lecture, sometimes for 5 minutes, sometimes for 15 minutes!!! No wonder he has to rush through the materials. It's like cancelling a lecture every 2 weeks. He makes many mistakes, and got confused sometimes, but was able to work them out.

easy prof...easy marks...interesting and funny...lively...I dont know what else are u looking for...one of the coolest prof I know
What a charming and funny prof! Makes class interesting and fun. Don't know what these other kiddies are complaining about. One of the better profs at SFU!
Amazing professor. The first time I took 151 I dropped it because it was confusing but once I took it with Goddyn everything was crystal clear and I ended up getting a really high grade! He's a funny guy with a lot of character and makes all the material very interesting.
Although consistently tardy, he makes up for it with a flamboyant charm. I find his notes may cover only the simplest examples, all of which come from the text book. But he is always open to questions and makes a great effort explaining using two projectors if he has to. Definitely a wonderful profesor.
the class is too early..i hardly go to class~but his exam is easy~~~although i dont go to class, i still get 70%~~
very funny professor. easy to understand and helps keep you awake w/ his humour during his lectures. overall a great time and much learnt.
Excellent math professor. Clear, funny, and engaging. Does a good job breaking the material down into digestible pieces. Relies on the textbook for examples, which isn't a plus, but he rewards students for participating.
Great professor, made my lectures worth going to. Made the material extremely easy to understand. Only downside is his examples were only from the textbook, but he kept the exams straightforward. Definitely recommend the class.
Excellent prof! Made class worth going to. Examples are a little limited, but his explanations of the concepts are extremely clear, and he's very helpful if you need it. Highly recommend taking a class with him.
People who complain about him probably got low grades because of their own problems such as being lazy and never work hard. He is definitely one of the best profs in math. the lectures were extremely engaging and energetic. if he has to be complained about then university is definitely not the place for those people
Dr. Goddyn is probably the most energetic math prof you will ever have at SFU. He runs into lecture every morning at 8:30 and greets everyone with a cheery, "Happy Monday!" He tends to make errors in his notes though. His exams are generally fair but too often there wasn't enough time to complete his quizzes.
Horrible professor. Comes in late 15 minutes EVERY lecture and goes over at least 5 minutes every time to make up for it. Midterms are okay, but reading the textbook is a DEFINITE MUST. You will NOT understand him if you do not read the book. Oh, and he makes plenty of mistakes, so bring lots of white-out to class.
horrible prof, 15 minutes late for every lecture; dance during the lecture time; make lots of mistakes and barely respond to emails, not really prepared for lectures and do not give notes.
The best math prof I ever had! lectures are very engaging and its hard to lose focus during lecture. He does great job at demonstrating concepts. Exams are not hard BUT are unreasonably long for the 50 minute time constraint - they test you more for speed of writing the exam than for understanding the material which can be really frustrating.
great prof!! i really don't understand all the negative comments here, these students must have done really badly. Goddyn really does a great job at explaining the concepts and making them simpler to grasp. he's also probably the funniest most charming math prof you'll ever see at sfu. Thank you prof Goddyn for being such a great teacher!
Great Prof! He makes dull material really interesting and simple. He does some mistakes, but they are insignificant! His way of teaching (he bounces every lecture with a smile) is really nice. His "Happy Monday" everyone encourages u to listen to him more carefully
Taking math 157 with Luis Goddyn is your best chance of getting a good mark in this class. I would know, I had Jonathan Jedwab the first time I took 157 and got a C-. Goddyn's exams are straight forward and only cover material he introduced in lectures. Just do the homework and look at the text book and you will do fine.
Easy Course with helpful professor.Everything is on the textbook~~~ so you can even skip the lectures sometime...
He is SO hilarious! he is always so happy and does twirls all the time and bounces left right and centre. He is great if you want to smile and learn :)
Always late for classes and making mistakes during lectures. Hes not giving the online notes away, you can only read the textbook when you missed class (but the textbook sucks) The course is easy, but the prof is terrible, questions on the exams aren't the things that we learnt in lectures. Unfair. Take this course with other prof if you need it.
Was very cheerful and open to helping students but was late to every single lecture. I recommend going to every lecture as I found that his notes are much easier to understand than the textbook. His exams were fair; just make sure you understand what was taught in class.
He was pretty good, really cleared up the material during lectures. Book was crap, so attending lectures is a biggy. Exams overall were fair and assignments were relatively easy and relavent. Was late to almost every lecture however.
Pretty funny guy, makes the class fun for being at 8;30 in the morning.
Luis is always full of energy and makes you want to pay attention during an 8:30 class. He even gave out prizes! What he explained was made clear however, I can't really say how "good" he was because I found I used the textbook to understand most of the hw questions and test questions. I found it great as it broke down the answers into steps.
Overall, the class was pretty easy since it's like a review of Math 12. But the online assignments are hard to do sometimes (at first they were really easy tho). Also, it is hard to contact him, I emailed him about the final and he never replied. If you want to do well in this class then do the textbook hw and attend lectures.
Awful prof. Super scatterbrained, and keeps jumping around in his notes so there's no logical flow. Difficult to follow his proof techniques. He seems knowledgeable in the material but is unable to convey it. Attending his office hours was useless as he was no help. Exams were difficult. Killed any interest I initially had in the subject. AVOID.
easy exams, especially final, most of them, you have seen on his lecture note or homework. very funny pro
Very good prof. One of the best and clearest profs I had in SFU.
Extremely unreasonable midterms and exams. You only have enough time to do 25% of the questions. He expects you to memorize absolutely EVERYTHING.
Bad lectures for MACM 201 and hard and unexpected exams.
He's a proff with a very engaging teaching style, so it's great to attend his lectures. I expected a class with reasonable difficulty when I signed up. The first midterm was what I expected - very fair, good average grade. Second midterm however, was tougher and short on time. The final was difficult with unique questions. Class average was <50%
It's almost compulsory to attend his class and take notes to do well in this course. His notes should be enough to understand easy topics, but reading the book is strongly recommended for hard sections like G.F. and Hamilton stuff. I managed to get A-; however, I'd say this course is on hard side. Not as hard as MATH232 but still expects much work.
Great Prof. High energy. Midterms were reasonable, final was a bit more difficult but he helped a lot prior to the exam if you went to his office hours. Class is scaled. Managed to get an A+
Exams are hard, way too much material. Requires a LOT of time. Great prof though, exams are based on what he teaches but there are just way too many things to understand. Not a course for those who are used to memorizing things. Average on the final exam was around 45%.
There is a lot of material in the course, if you do homework and get help if something is unclear (whether from the workshop or him) you will do really well. Don't expect a good mark if you don't put in the time. He loves helping students and it makes him happy that you understood what he is teaching. He may be scattered but does his best.
Goddyn is funny and very animated in class, however I felt that he lacked the professionalism and high standards of teaching that some of the other professors at SFU have. He is often late to class and when he is on time his lectures are full of mistakes. I ended up just studying from the textbook for quizzes, exams, and assignments.
Funny guy
He's such a funny guy, quite animated, makes lecture interesting. However, he can't really teach so the only reason I'm doing well in this class is because of the textbook.
great prof.
He gave us a challenge.
He's an interesting guy. He get's very worked up and excited during lectures, which keeps it interesting, but it also means he makes a couple mistakes in his lecture notes, but he'll always correct them. Great prof, makes you work for the grade but I would suggest him for sure
Dr. Goddyn is very animated and fun and I found him great at explaining the key course concepts. Quizzesexams were all fair though the midterms were a bit long. Really enjoyed the course content, too! My only complaint would be that he was never on time for lectures and didn't always seem prepared, but overall I would recommend him!
May as well just teach yourself. He only copies examples directly from the textbook without any clarification or explanation.
This class is GPA Booster. It is easier than Math 150. You do not need textbook to pass this course. You just need to listen to the lectures and that's all.
He's a decent lecturer and you might not be able to understand some of his methods of education. However, it is easy to pass this course, let alone get at least a B. Trust me, just go to classes and you will do fine. Remember to learn basic examples for the final!
He needs to be more organized. He is all over the place during the lectures. Other than that, exams were fair. You must do all the textbook problems to pass this course
Finally at SFU, we were tested on something we were taught, good job. Other profs should learn from this golden rule.
Terribly unorganized meaning lectures are borderline useless. Unfortunately, the required textbook is dreadful so you'll really use to work to do well.
Worst prof I've ever met at SFU. Do not hope to understand anything from his lectures, cause otherwise you will be very disappointed. Textbook is practically useless as well, as it's impossible to understand a single thing from it. So technically you're on your own: you pay tuition for this course, but you have to learn everything all by yourself
This is the second course I've taken with Luis and he has been the single worst prof I've had at SFU. His lectures are full of mistakes. He doesn't teach anything, just does examples in front of you. The textbook is ordered differently than how the concepts are taught in class so it's miserable trying to understand what to study. Avoid him.
Midterm was easy if enough time. It's not for testing your understanding but your memorizing & speed test. I hate the subject but understand it well by studying the book, however on midterm forgot the formula by the time i drive the formula, time was up. Hate his exam style!
Luis isn't clear in lecture and isn't very helpful in the workshop. He makes a ton of mistakes on assignments, lectures and quizzes. With that being said, he is an extremely easy professor. Midterms are a cakewalk. Definitely recommend for compsci kids who only want a good grade.
Luis doesn't go out of his way to make this course very difficult. He is a graph theorist though, so he likes to ask interestingdifficult questions about that kind of stuff. So I'd really put in a lot of work for those sections.
Pros: He posts all his lecture notes online. His exams are all very easy. He's very generous in marking. He is usually willing to help. Cons: Very disorganized. Makes several mistakes in lecture. Often late to lecture and office hours. Usually takes too long to upload assignments. Sometimes asks unreasonably long questions on the quizzes.
Luis is enthusiastic and pretty good at explaining concepts. He makes a few mistakes in lecture, but it really doesn't matter if you read the book. Assignments can be challenging, but the midterms are very fair. The final exam was much easier than any of the midterms as well. Would highly recommend Luis.
He is very enthusiastic, he made math interesting. Made some mistakes when solving problems which was little confusing. He will take the time to help you. The testing style in this course was very difficult, challenging problems and about a minute per question. If you are not good at math, expect to put a ton of work for an ok grade.
Hard class that was even harder with such a prof. It's funny in-class and he does and says all kind of crazy things, but he is a terrible teacher. He will constantly screw up his numbers, and will just confuse the heck out of you. So many times students had to help him out figure where he made a mistake. And don't even bother outside office hrs.
I started out the course thinking it would be sufficient to do the assigned problems and a little extra reading. Not a chance - his lectures and assignments focus on deeper understanding, but he doesn't provide a solid base to get there. Especially in the first few weeks, do ALL the questions from the assigned chapters. Overall, he's okay.
Luis is a very easy instructor. His explanations are clear and he tells you exactly what to expect for his midtermsexams. There are no tricks. Those who do the practice problems and optional problems will do well in the course. The people who complain about Luis are the people who didn't do the homeworkreadings or study.
lectures are organized. You should read textbook by yourself. Do the assignments, you will be fine on the quiz. midterm and final are not difficult. Overall, it's good prof
Pros: His midterms and finals are mostly very easy, He is a very generous marker and re-marker, entertaining in lecture, gives engaging assignments, posts notes online(huge help). Cons: Highly disorganized, makes tons of mistakes in lecture, late at posting assignments, quiz questions take way too long!!
Prof is okay it's just that this course is very hard.
Doesn't do good examples, never gives the full time for the quizzes and very unorganized
Consistently late and pretty unorganized. Explains concepts clearly, gives simple examples in class. Exams are fair (expect questions where you need to APPLY what you learn to a new style of question, often different from assigned homework)
Many mistakes in every lecture. his lectures are straight out of the textbooks, he has the textbook open in front of him while hes teaching and just reads word for word, and makes the examples even more complicated. You're better off just teaching yourself. His tests are nothing like the assigned homework
Luis Goddyn is a great Math Prof. His lectures are easy to follow and the examples are mostly basic ones from the textbook. His teaching style is good for those who are not the best in Math as he goes through examples very clearly. His exams were fair, and you can expect a decent mark if you attempt practice problems in the textbook.
Always late. Lectures and examples are straight out of the textbook, does not explain topics and questions clearly what so ever
As nice of a person he was, teaching ability is straight up terrible. He literally brought the textbook with him and copied examples out of it, but got confused and made it harder to learn b/c when i stopped going i got better marks. Also very unprofessional as he never shows up on time and some exam questions are nothing like TB or even past exams
Best Prof I have ever seenVery good
Luis was only on time a handful of times and even when he was on time he wasn't prepared. Almost every single lecture starts 5-10 mins late and he doesn't respect the time at which the lecture is supposed to end. He will often go off on tangents in the middle of lectures and it is not uncommon to only get through a few slides of the lecture. Avoid.
A clown makes you laugh all semester long then it turns into tears when u get ur grades. For first year students if you didn't calculus in high school for the love of GPA GOD Avoid this tuurdd. This guy is a joke of a prof ur better off learning from the book, he makes mistakes and his exams arent anything like the quizzes or HW. You have my wisdom
Professor Goddyn is a good prof. I would suggest that you prepare your notes early on and genuinely try to listen to him in lectures. I find that he explains really well and tries to make jokes here and there (that are funny). if you pay attention in class, you will understand most of the concepts. Assignments help as well so go to the ACW!
Explains concepts clearly. Tells you exactly what to expect on the exams, not vague at all. Really good prof, funny, really good at teaching.
Overall, he is a good prof. He always wants to engage students in class, however he doesnt have many office hours and he tends to make many errors in notes.
very good prof, you can fell his passion and love for math. there are same mistakes on notes. thats ok. I will take him other courses. super good and kind prof in SFU
I took Math 154 with this prof, he makes a lot of mistakes in class and is often corrected by other students. His exams are also a lot different from what he teaches in lectures. His lectures are also boring and he just reads whatever is there in the slides.
Dr. Goddyn is an excellent professor. Hilarious class and you can tell he is enthusiastic. 5/5. My only complaint is that his class is so easy. The content in 251 is not abstract and in 3D. Math 251 is supposed to be more challenging, instead of memorizing all formulas, writing all formulas in exam paper and you will get an easy A+.
Dr. Goddyn is a pretty good professor. Overall, I would say he is alright, but he makes many mistakes and gives students bonus marks for identifying any mistakes. If you didn't take calculus in high school, then this might be a bit difficult for you. Pretty manageable to get a descent grade in the class, however.
In my opinion he is not a good teacher, and he is very unorganized.
I'm the type of person that hates attending classes of any sort, and somehow this man made me happy to attend 8:30am classes for a math course. By far my favourite professor at SFU.
I've taken quite a few math courses at SFU and Luis is the best math prof I've had. He is super enthusiastic about the subject and really wants us to learn. The tests are very reasonable and have straightforward questions about concepts gone over in class. lectures are not mandatory but I recommend attending as concepts get more difficult.
Very interesting lecture and nice class notes, although he always makes small arithmetic errors here and there lol. Exams and grading are also pretty fair, but you really need to put in some work to get a decent grade.
Dr. Goddyn explains concepts very clearly, however, many typos in his lectures, in his exams no calculator is permitted and in questions you have to apply what you learned rather than solve problems. Also, not enough time for his exams.
Not great at explaining, seems like he has trouble organizing his thoughts while trying to teach. Tests are marked super hard and apparently no part marks are given and are way too long for the time given. The average for the midterm was 48.5%
Late for class every single time. Nothing was organized. Solutions post days after his promise. TA also marking extremely hard.
do not take this course with Luis. I have had the worst experience in his class. he makes uncountable mistakes in lectures and is usually 5 minutes late to class and then he wouldn't complete examples saying he would fill them in later. this class has hard material itself but Luis made it even harder.
The online questions didn't really match the midterm and final questions. Lecture examples and questions listed under course notes were the best indication of what the midterm and final were going to be like. Definitely not enough time on the midterm to complete the questions. Final was hard and given by another teacher-not Luis.
Decent lectures that started 5 minutes late (great opportunity to make some class friends). Notes were pretty helpful. The exams were fair and based more on application than theory (and proofs). The biggest challenges were communication - it took over a month to get our first test back.
Was late to his own class every time, made errors every lecture, and then (no joke) abandoned us when classes were moved online due to covid-19. The math department had to force him to talk to us, and then he dumped us on a Surrey math prof. Super unprofessional and scatter-brained. No calculator in exams but expects us to do difficult calculations
Very bad at teaching, makes so many mistakes during lectures and so many errors in the review package. nice guy and tries to help but takes too long to teach, does not spend his time wisely and we didn't even finish the course but it was still on the final (worth 50%).
I got an A+ in his class, did really well on the final (worth 50%). Make sure you understand the concepts because he doesn't teach very well. Makes many mistakes and is quite slow. You want to teach yourself, try to get as much help as you can get and make sure you understand concepts. The timing of the Midterms was pretty bad, I was very rushed.
TERRIBLE. Doesn't care about his students, makes mistakes 24/7, has TERRIBLE internet so you'll go through 6/12 notes, has LONG TERRIBLE notes, doesn't listen, has complicated IQ and OQ and does not explain them. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE CALC 12 otherwise lol gl on the midterms and finals. I would not be surprised if he was a trump supporter.
Don't take Calc1 with Luis. He posted our homework late on multiple occasions, forgot to post notes multiple times, and consistently put material we hadn't learned yet on the midterms. He doesn't reply to emails or concerns. Our final exam had concepts he didn't properly prepare us for. He has a good personality, but the class was tough.
Lectures made material more confusing. The prof always made mistakes in the notes and even on one of the midterms! He's very nice but does not explain concepts well and takes a long time to release assignment grades. I don't recommend him unless you took calculus in high school.
Thank god I took Calc in highschool, otherwise I would have been SCREWED. Long, boring lectures. Lots of mistakes made on his lectures. Exams were tough and had material that wasn't even on. the Fall 2020 class had to be curved extremely, more than 80% dropped out or switched because of him. Felt bad for him, seems like a good guy but not techy.
Common theme among first year calc teachers- they aren't great. If you haven't taken calculus in highschool, any professor will have a hard class. Specifically for Goddyn, he's a mediorce at best professor. Half decent at explaining concepts, but test questions are WAY harder than any homework/textbook examples. Constantly posts material late, too.
He's a nice guy but an awful prof. He doesn't know how to explain things properly and tends to ramble on when discussing simple topics. This rambling makes it even harder to understand the material. He is always posting material late and it takes a while for him to respond to emails.
Luis is a nice guy but really can't explain material well. Be ready for a alot of self study
Extremely unorganized and gives out assignments late. Assignment questions don't match the exam questions. Feedback and marks come late. Never seems to keep to his own schedule. Lectures are confusing and filled with errors, which is ridiculous for a math prof. Avoid him if you can. Maybe a nice guy. But a bad teacher.
Luis Goddyn is extremely unorganized, does not release IQ's out on time, and the midterms are word problems we never even had similar questions to in the homework. Had the audacity to tell my entire lecture hall the midterm was easy when our average was 20%. If you have this professor, go over the practice questions from the notes.
Awful professor, does not help students, never releases his OQs on time. He doesn't help with homework and leaves you to do things on your own that you don't understand. His tests are astronomically bad, filled with poor word problems. His grading scale is horrendous. He is the most unorganized prof I've ever had. Shows up late to his own class.
Stay away from Luis. Never releases any of the homework or notes on time and I find the prelectures from other profs to be much more useful. He shows up late to his own lecture every day. Luis is super unorganized, and I’d advise anyone and everyone to stay away. Please take your course with another professor.
Probably the worst professor I ever seen at SFU. Always late, class ends minimum 15 minutes after the time it should be. Notes, or solution he posting has at least 5 typo or error each, and has not released any grades until the last lecture. So unorganized.. But he is a nice person, but as a professor.. no deal.
The course itself was fine, he was late starting and ending each lecture though. The real problem is that we never got any grades on assignments and midterms. I did the final today and the 2nd homework (due Feb 9th) was only just graded. It was not a pleasant experience having no idea how I was performing in the class for the whole semester.
He was always late to class, posted cut-off lecture videos (provided they were even for the correct lecture), fell far behind schedule, neglected to post our homework assignments. The class avg on midterm 1 was 32% because we had no clue what we were doing due to insufficient practice opportunities and bad lectures.
The worst professor I've ever had. Very disorganized and does not give us practice exams. He only gives us useless review documents that does not cover the actual content on the exams which left everyone not knowing what to expect. The average for our first midterm was 33% and the second was 50%. Avoid this professor at all cost.
Terrible prof, he is always late to lecture, stopped posting homework problems and solutions (IQ), doesn't mark assignments, disorganized, doesn't answer emails, doesn't follow proper course timeline, skips learning material, incomplete study guide/review sheets, lazy and straight incompetent. Seems like a decent person though. DONT TAKE MATH W HIM
The professor is disorganized and does not update his students. Always makes mistakes in lectures and hw is never posted on time. Promised to drop lowest hw but instead drops the highest one. Tricks his students on exams making the class average this sem to be at around 30%.
I had a really difficult time understanding what he was teaching as he was all over place and his notes were slightly different and out of order to the one available. We even asked him in person and email but never got anything unless it was review. After the second midterm, it got worse to the point where it felt like we didn't learn anything.
Luis isn't the best professor when it comes to organization. He would show up to our lectures late and teach beyond the allotted time. His lecture slides were clear and his exams were relatively fair. However, throughout the semester we barely received any feedback which is my biggest complaint - we still haven't gotten our first midterm marks back
Run away from him
Second time with this prof! Definitely not taking his class again! First time was online and he was disorganized for not recording the zoom session. Needed to remind him to start recording. The second time was in person. Posted the videos but not the lecture slides. His exams were based on his slides. Organic chem tutor taught me more than he did.
Professor Goddyn isn't a difficult professor, but he is not a fantastic teacher. I found myself learning the most from videos online since the lectures were not usually very clear. The exams were not super difficult, and the homework was easy, but if you are not good at math, I would choose a different professor.
He's a really nice guy but teaching is not for him. The questions on his exams actually seemed fair, I just felt poorly equipped to actually solve them.
my eyes turned black during every lecture... He's confusing and doesn't explain basic concepts well. Avoid him if you don't want to be atrociously humbled.
I luckily passed with a good grade, but only because I took Calculus 12 in highschool. Honestly if I took this class without previous knowledge about the concepts covered in his class, I probably would've suffered. His lectures were very confusing.
He went to quickly during lectures or to slowly which just left all of us confused. The exam were nothing like IQ or class examples. He made first year calculus wayyyyyy harder than necessary. Really I wished to the reviews to not take his class!
Took this class in 2021 and I barely survived. Luis is not a good professor. His slides are unclear and not helpful. His exams are super unfair. No matter how much you study his material, you will not do good in this class. Had to retake.
You're better off studying the online lecture videos then listening to Goddyn most of the time. While Goddyn is a nice professor, he goes through material too quickly, makes wayyyy too many mistakes on every lecture, and typically submits new information quite late. Expect to rely on studying through the textbook and homework.
always late, never was able to get through a whole lecture. the small amount of stuff we did get through was very surface level. made so many algebra mistakes, at least 5 per lecture. seems to not really care about the class that much. that being said tests were quite fair but get ready to self teach.
He was always late for class and the lectures on made me more confused about the material.
He has a fun personality but it doesn't matter because his lectures are a mess. He's always late and his notes are poorly organized and uploaded late. Does not reply to inquiries outside class. The final was extremely difficult and unfair and is worth 50% of the total grade. Do not take this course with him unless you want to watch your GPA plummet
while he's friendly and funny during lectures, he's extremely unorganized and would show up at least 10 mins late to class, speed through the lesson, sometimes would not even finish or tell us to read parts on our own, and go over class time. his midterms and quizzes were fair, but the final exam was awful. very unorganized
If I could give a 0 I would. Late to lectures, didn't upload filled notes for a long time, does not respond to emails, can't really talk in person either. The final exam was extremely unreasonable, and it was worth 50% of our grade. Did all my hw, looked at quizzes/midterms/practice finals, still the final was stuff I haven't seen before.
if u can take the course with smo else, pls do. although he is sweet, he is a horrible professor. always late, has no idea what he is teaching, makes numerous errors, and never posts stuff on time, so hard to reach out of class and in class. clearly has no dedication towards teaching his students. be prepared to study on your own
He is a very nice and friendly professor. While he is a bit unorganized, he tries his best to teach his students.
Professor Luis Goddyn teaches super slow and doesn't summarize what he's taught. He says really numb jokes which takes up lecture time. Every time he tries to explain something, he explains it like he doesn't know what he's talking about. Never take this class when you have Math 100 and 101.
He gave out the review material for Midterm 1 less than 24hrs before the exam, and it was not even similar in difficulty. Made so many mistakes in class, did not really care about it. Even our review session was a complete mess when students had to constantly correct him. Please consider retiring.
Shows up to his own lectures 20 minutes late. Posts midterm notes less than a day before midterm. Somehow is now two lectures behind his own assignments. Can't do the homework because he hasn't covered it yet. Run!
my eyeballs go black
my eyes turn black and he loves to turn around like a ballerina
He's super nice but is not great at explaining things.
Avoid this guy! His laptop dies during the lecture! Totally unprepared and the notes are lenghty! Just watch Organic Chemistry Tutor instead lol
With all due respect, he is not a great teacher, he is a very nice person and is clearly passionate about math but my god he is way out of his prime. Now he can't even get his laptop working or sound systems anything technical every class. Expect classes to start 5-8 minutes late every time. Avoid if possible or prepare to teach yourself.
Work isn't difficult, but the prof is horrible cannot lie. Shows up late, and starts late every class. Posts midterm reviews 1-2 days before the actual midterm while Surrey Profs have them posted from the start of the term. Never take this guy unless you want to fail. He should be kicked out of SFU
This guy ruined my life bro.
not a good prof. at all.
Do not take this prof
Funny prof but can't teach math
Do not take math 157 with this professor, hes funny but no one understands a single thing that he says. He can't teach, shows up to lecture late all the time and there are always problems with the slides and the microphone. The content is already difficult and he makes it impossible to understand. You have to teach yourself.
dont take this prof ever, made this course so much harder than it alr is
nice guy but he cant teach at all , my eyes turn black
Bro is always late to class. He has no control over the class, everyone is talking at the same time. He is a professional yapper. His favourite line is "My eyes will turn black." His class content is pretty easy if you took calc beforehand.
He comes late to his lectures, Has trouble reviewing content before exams, and is also generally unorganized.
Comes late to lectures and is very unorganized. Spends to much time on one question and then speeds through the rest of the lecture. Is very behind on lectures. Bad at teaching the content
this guy needs to go, bad teacher, unorganized, posts practice exams one day before. literally the worst teacher don't pick him. class is fully loose with this guy.
Mathematic terrorist.
Always shows up late to lectures, cannot teach if his life depended on it. Surprised he hasn't been fired from SFU yet as the average first year mathematics major can teach better than him.
Do not take this professor unless you have no other choice.
This prof can take my vitamins, easy tho
he shows up late every single lecture. will change mandatory hw due dates hours before they are due. most of the time after being late he cannot figure out the technology to teach the class. makes topics much more confusing than they have to be. 5 or 6 lectures behind the entire sem and to catch up went insanely quickly through difficult topics
Terrible, please fire him, how is he still a professor, this guy teaches nothing and gets his pay cheque. I self studied this whole course, better off taking other math classes instead.
bro still haven't update the solution for IQ8. I'm dying with optimization.
horrible do not take its not easier than 151
1hr 30 instead of 3 hours for a final is all I have to say.
This is one of the worst professors at SFU. Never take his class as he shows up 5-10 mins late every lecture, can't even finish a single set of notes, complicates things a lot and slacks on getting marks and grades in. Sloppy professor! get him outta here
bro printed the exams on the day of the final. we sat in exam room for an hour waiting for prof to finish printing the remaining 100 final exam papers. originally was a 3-hour exam, but because of how long he took to print the papers, we only got an1h 30m. he doesn't seem to know what he's doing. horrible organization. worst prof ever
Undoubtably the worst math professor you could end up with. While he has never been consistent with the IQ's or OQ's, you can count on him to show up late to every lecture and spend most the time trying to resolve tech issues. Unless you want your eyes turning black, take this course with someone else.
our final exam time was cut in half because bro didn't have enough copies printed... he shows up late to every lecture, was several lectures behind for the whole semester, and is generally unorganized.
Trust me, all the reviews are true. If you're not willing to teach yourself every single concept you can kiss your GPA goodbye. He's a nice person but boy is he a bad prof. Don't rely on his teaching to pass:) We barely survived this term with him... there's no guarantees you will. My eyeballs turn black and I'm hiring a therapist. Run!
Avoid this professor! Consistently arrives 5-10 mins late, faces frequent tech problems, and regularly has to call IT. Never completes a full lecture, had to omit exam topics. Slow to grade, especially IQs; still awaiting grades at semester end. Final Exam delayed 1.5 hrs due to printer issues; promised extra time was not delivered.
Horrible at explaining topics, constantly makes mistakes, at least 10 minutes late to every lecture, constantly changes due dates at the last second. We were supposed to get 3 hours for our final exam but he messed up the printing and we only got an hour and a half to complete it. DO NOT TAKE I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE HIM AS YOUR PROFESSOR!
How is he still employed? Absolute Joke. Only thing he is consistent with is arriving to class 5-10 minutes late. Never completes a full lecture and had to rush through hardest topics at the end. Final Exam was the delayed 1.5 hrs due to him forgetting to print 100 exams then an hour in he announces we have to cut our 3hr exam 1.5 hrs SHORT!!
PLEASE FOR YOUR OWN ENJOYMENT LOOK UP THIS MANS YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND HIS PLAYLISTS LMAOOOO.
He gets late for students and is unprepared for the marking sessions. He DID not give any feedback to the students on their IQs the whole term. On the final, he left the room alone with only TAs dealing with angry students for 1.5 hours. I DO NOT recommend taking any course with him. No teaching skills. Hoping not to work with him anymore.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM!!!!!! He is so unorganized and always was late to every lecture. Never responded to emails and no feedback on assignments. Some lectures I wondered if he even understood what he was saying. Avoid for your own sake
Prof usually late and is behind on planned class material. Release review answer key for midterm and final day before test. Adds things on tests morning of. Very detailed review package tho. Teaches concept in more difficult way then needed.
WORST PROF IVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. MADE US WAIT 1.5HRS FOR OUR FINAL AFTER IT WAS SUPPOSED TO START. I FAILED MY FINAL AS HE ONLY GAVE US 1.5HR TO COMPLETE (was supposed to be a 3hr exam) OVERALL IDK HOW THIS MAN STILL HAS A JOB. HE LITERALLY CANT EVEN SOLVE HIS OWN PROBLEMS
DO NOT TAKE MATH WITH THIS PROF!!! Nice guy but omg he can't teach. His lectures dont make sense and he doesnt explain well at all. Had to teach everything to myself. The whole semester we were at least 5 lectures behind and he would always be late to lectures. Would release review packages the day before the midterm. Worst semester of my life
Don't take him as a prof please
Prof is unorganized, and extremely slow during lectures. As he was slow during the earlier lectures of the semester, he had to speed up on the end lectures, which he sped up on. He didn't print enough tests for the final and gave us half the time to do the final than promised.
The instructor's teaching style lacked structure and coherence, leading to a disorganized course flow. Unfortunately, the pace fluctuated erratically throughout the semester, making it challenging to follow. Moreover, the final exam was rushed due to insufficient test papers and a shortened timeframe, which added unnecessary stress
The professor's lectures were highly disorganized and inconsistently paced. Starting slow and then rushing through the latter part of the course made it difficult to absorb the material effectively. Furthermore, the final exam situation was disappointing, with inadequate test papers and significantly less time than initially promised.
The instructor's lack of organization reflected in the haphazard pace of lectures. The slow start was compensated by a hurried end, making it hard to maintain a consistent learning rhythm. The final exam was marred by insufficient test copies and an unexpectedly shortened duration, impacting our ability to perform optimally.
The professor's lectures lacked structure and were notably slow-paced initially, resulting in a rushed course culmination. This erratic speed change disrupted the learning process, and the final exam suffered due to insufficient test materials and a significantly reduced timeframe, affecting the overall exam experience
Throughout the semester, the instructor's teaching style was disorganized and inconsistently paced, making it challenging to follow along. The abrupt acceleration in the latter part of the course due to the slow start created unnecessary pressure.

Additionally, the final exam experience was compromised by insufficient test materials and a significantly reduced timeframe.
HE DA GOAT IDC WHAT YA'LL SAY #Noenemies
Nice, but massively disorganized. Split our final into 2 rooms based on last name. A-L room was somehow missing 100 exams and thus got 1.5 hrs to write a 3 hour exam whilst the M-Z room got the full 3 hours for the same test. No effort made to rectify this. Lectures are confusing and we spent 80% of the semester being behind. Avoid at all costs.
Lectures are poor, the professor is nice and kind but struggles too teach.
run. no marks given back the entire semester.
I think he is a good guy, just not a good prof. We didn't get grades for literally anything until almost 2 weeks after the final.
Cut our final exam time in half because of incompetence
horrible. the final got cut in half because he wasn't prepared and now we all have to retake the final exam
Final was chill just cut the time in half but boosted gr
Don't take his class, he had the worst explanations ever, everyone hated him.
Avoid at all costs. Useless lectures, cut the exam time in half for half of the class and barely adjusted the grades. Makes lots of mistakes in assignments and lectures. Not able to explain.
Terrible just terrible shows up late to classes, why are you even a professor, you are very very bad at teaching, very unprofessional. Please resign.
He seems like a nice guy, but Teaching really isn't for him. Straight up, I stopped going to lectures after week 3 and learned everything online on my own. All our assignments were graded 2 weeks before the final. To his credit, he at least posted the solutions (mostly correct) The worst part is our final exam was cut in half during the exam.
He's a nice guy, but teaching really isn't for him. After 3 lectures I decided to stop attending class to learn it all on my own. He's constantly making mistakes and showing up late to class. Honestly, his lectures made the material more confusing. His tests are generally fair and based on the homework he assigns, so he's alright in that sense.
Have Prof Goddyn for 8:30am class 3 times a week. Should be living hell but he makes the class interesting. Clearly cares about students.
this teacher literally cant teach, just get out find a new job literally your making the class harder by ur existence dont take him useless
As a person, I like him. But, not as a prof. Constantly messing up explanations in class, makes things more confusing. Takes forever to post lecture slides, despite having weekly quizzes on the material in the lecture slides. And many slides still have mistakes in them. Don't take him if you're not confident in your ability to teach yourself math.
He is nice but sometimes it is hard to understand him.
Just don't. Averages less than 40%. At least once a week the man gave up and said "I don't know how to do this" on his own examples.
The lectures are a hit-or-miss, but if you stay focused and use resources like unstuckstudy ai, you can succeed. Tests are fair, just don't expect much help from the professor.
Nice guy, but didn't return a single grade back for 2 + 1/4 months. Lecture pace is an absolute mess (1-4 for midterm 1, 5-17 for midterm 2), which heavily impacted midterm studying and assignments. HW 1,2 was for the first midterm, and only had HW 3 for the second midterm that went up to lecture 7 ---> 10 lectures no practice. Please avoid him.
This professor is very disorganized. They don't upload materials properly or on time. They often come late to class and don't teach the material clearly. The questions they give on tests are much harder than what they teach in class, and their notes are very hard to understand. Overall, the class is very confusing, and I have struggled a lot.
Awesome guy!!! Wish he was my dad
