Great teacher, very helpful willing to offer additional help b4 and after class and weekends. Gives good examples.

My class did the last 3 tests (2 tests + a final) in under 3 weeks because he kept horrible pace over the course of the semester. Also, his grading sucks. If you mess up the first step of a problem (often the obscure algebra tricks he throws at you) than you lose credit for everything else .. even if the calculus is still solid.
I heard he's a good teacher to take for MAT 122 and MAT 151 but he expects too much for his MAT 173. Tons of homework given and tests were difficult. Take another teacher for 173
Pr. Leon is excellent, he really mastered his material and is very helpful. He makes his class challenging but if you show up every class, do the homeworks and ask questions, you will pass the class without any difficulty. Very recommemded
GREAT TEACHER!! He is amazing at explaining the problem step by step! I will not take any other teacher for math...
Excellent teacher! Very helpful! Option to take the final if you have a B or higher-
Great teacher. I took his accelerated course and did very well in it. He is for sure intense but he knows his *&$# and expects you to as well. He also posts his notes from the smart board online after each class. really awesome.
one of the best math teachers i have had.
Great teacher if you want to learn differential equations. It's not an easy class but you will walk out knowing your stuff. He is always willing to help during office/tutoring hours.
Well, at first I thought he was awesome, now I think he sucks as a teacher, when HE gets behind the student pays! He gave us the last two tests in the second to last week of the semester and the final the next week. He does a poor job of managing time. Im retaking dif eq becuase he skipped a lot of material I needed for my next classes.
Don't try to ask questions outside of class, he is to busy & will tell you to come back another time. He let the class get behind. We took 3 exams in 1 week & ran out of time to cover all of the mat'l. He promised notes for the mat'l that he did not cover. I'll need to retake the class since I didn't learn the mat'l needed for future classes.
he is even better than my last Mat 086. he is easier and gets the students more than just going through the material so that it is done. fo rthose who have trouble I highly reccommend him
Good teacher easy to understand, did good review and notes. Had a option for not taking the final
I liked alot as a math teacher. I learned alot from him. skipped a few things in the book, but mostly things that are common sense. I could always go back to my book and review those things if needed. He loves to teach, and always welcomes questions.I highly recomend him.
Great math teacher. He is very helpful and very patient. Best math teacher I ever had.
Awesome instructor! best math teacher i ever had!
Nice guy, but he was really hard to follow in lecture and all of us had no idea what he was doing, then had to teach ourselves. Frustrating. I've taken Calc2 before at UA, got an A, (just wanted to brush up before grad school) and I thought his tests were challenging, he's a tough grader. HW was optional which was awesome but it's hard to do well.
I really like Leon's teaching style. He is clear and to the point. I rearranged my schedule in order to be able to take him and it was worth it. If you really want to learn and move on in math take him but don't expect him to hold your hand. Also really like how he post class notes from the smart board and that the final is optional.
Excellent teacher. Challenging but extremely helpful. Gives you a lot of time to take tests so you always have time to go back and recheck your answers. Do not expect an easy A, but know that he will help you. Do practice problems that he suggests. I will always take him for a math instructor.
Best math teacher I've had. The class is difficult for some but he's very easy to follow and is willing to help everyone who needs it.
great teacher. explains everything well. do not expect an easy A though. Need to practice and do homework. lets you take all the time you need for tests. would take him again.
Engaged practically every student in the classroom (and this was Calculus.. 5 week bender). His tests exploit student's shortcomings regarding rules/theorems of Calc. Algebraic manipulation is his specialty (you have been forewarned). Great sense of humor. Pima is lucky to have such quality on staff. Looking forward to Calc II with him.
Awesome fun teacher!!!:)
This teacher is GREAT! His tests are hard, but are exactly from the homework if you do it. Funny, cares about every student. I Aced all his classes. He is not an easy teacher if you don't do the homework.
Great Teacher, Brilliantly explains everything, you don't truly understand something unless you can explain it simply, aces calc 2 dvq and calc 3 with this teacher.
EXCELLENT teacher!! I absolutely hate math and he made it fun and interesting! HW is not mandatory but if you do it class will be much easier since the test involves examples straight from the HW. If you don't do the HW it will be hard but if you do you'll get a good grade. He also has study sessions before exams which were great help!!
Luis is a great teacher, very tentive to his students and always eager to help. However I found it difficult to understand him in class. He over explains things and goes really slow that he will end up making the most simplest math problems confusing. If you are used to fast paced learning and demonstrations then i would not recommend luis
Luis is very helpful.Takes time to re-explain hard concepts.Utilize tutors, esp Gus and Mick.Sometimes he takes too long reviewing last class's lecture and ends up rushing through new content. Homework isn't mandatory but is necessary if you want to ace the quizzes and tests, especially since he pulls a lot of questions directly from the homework.
Luis is a diamond in the rough. He knows, lives and breaths math. If you want or need to learn math. Show some effort and He will show you anything you want to know. Oh Make sure you know algebra. Take Him he is great.
The Best Math teacher you'll ever have!
Took this class online and it was extremely easy. His notes were very easy to understand in helping me understand the chapters. Highly recommend this teacher especially if you looking for an online teacher and he is teaching online that semester.
Wonderful teacher...other than math he will teach the importance of responsibility
If you do the homework (not required) he will will give you an understanding of math that is unparalleled. Wanted to get an A in MAT122, he helped me achieve straight up to MAT182
BEST TEACHER EVER! He made math fun and helpful. He lets you use a partner when we have quizzes. Explains everything with details. Gives outside tutoring before exam days. Homework isn't required but his test/quiz questions are from the book. I recommend him to anyone who doesn't like math, he'll make you like it! :)
Physio major. Hate math! Stuck with Luis from Trig to CalcII and did well. BEST math teacher ever! Bends over backward to help you do well. Vital info: DO THE HOMEWORK!! Utilize tutors. And then when you're done doing that, DO THE HMWK AGAIN!! If you're able to understand the how's & why's behind hmwk probs, you'll do well on exams! Good luck!!!
This CalcII class started with 28 students and ended with 26, that should tell you all you need to know if you have ever experienced CALC classes in college. I have never seen more than half the class stick it out. He is absolutely amazing, and will bend over backwards to help you. His class is easy because he makes you understand it.
The best math teacher I had in college, and high school! He took me from a Math hating pre-algebra student, to a A+ Trig lover. Attendance is not mandatory because he feels like you're an adult, and if you care about your grade, you'll come to class. Homework is also not mandatory, for the same reason. However, if you don't do the hw, you'll suffer
He is enthusiastic and knows his subject. DO NOT MISS CLASS. HW/not graded but there is a ton of it. Tests are difficult. He is organized in class but takes forever to grade papers. I never knew where I stood until the day of the final. Quizzes, usually days when lots of people are absent. HE WILL CLAIM YOUR SOUL!
Excellent teacher. Professor Leon is very knowledgeable, and he does not hesitate to offer help where it is needed. In my experience I've never encountered a math teacher that possesses the ability to simplify such seemingly difficult concepts as well as he does.
JUST finished his summer MATH 151 course! He is definitely the BEST math teacher I ever had, hands down. Math is actually my weakest subject, but his teaching skills are amazing! I'm ending this course with an A, take him!!
Leon is a good teacher. Just took his 5 week Calculus II class. Notes are very clear and gives lots of quizzes, but only counts the top 10 highest scores. Tests are challenging and questions can be tricky
Homework isn't graded but it's recommend to do as a great practice because all of the exam and quiz questions come right from the homework. Leon loves to claim souls. Great guy but seems sorta proud when the test averages are bad, around 60%-70%. If you study and work hard, an A is very possible. You really have to work for your grade.
Not sure what all the hype surrounding this guy is all about. Maybe he had a bad year with too much on his plate, but he did not really seem very personable. Was constantly telling depressing stories to the class about how unfair life is and about people failing at pursuing their dreams. Lectures were ok sometimes, but often left everyone confused.
One of the best teachers I've had. The grading consists of only tests, quizzes (takehome), and a group project; he drops your lowest test and your two lowest quizzes. His class is hard to get good marks in, as he takes pride in making challenging tests and quizzes, however he goes above and beyond in trying to get you to understand the concepts.
this teacher was the best math teacher I had ever had in my life. there was things I didn't understand while in high school but he helped explain it more. he goes by the book. the course will say you need the math lab but don't get it. he doesn't give homework out. quizzes are tough if you don't work on some work. all test are out of the book.
He's a great teacher. If you have trouble with math take this teacher he makes it as painless as possible! Go to study sessions after class, you will benefit from it I promise!
This guy is a rockstar! To learn math from him is an amazing experience! He's very clear, very patient, and knows how to communicate appropriately. He makes math fun (as fun as can be) and really cares about his student success. He's everything you want in a math teacher. He is a tough grader but he wants you to be perfect and nothing less.
Took Leon for Calc III last semester, currently enrolled in Diff eq. Leon can come off as snobby however is one of the best profs at breaking down the material for you and working out problems step by step. Exams are usually difficult, doesn't give much partial credit. Been giving out pop quizzes consistently this semester which is annoying.
Funny. Gives good feedback on tests. Homework not mandatory. He knows his subject and is concise in his lectures. Gives rigorous quizzes which can be worked on in groups. Your algebra has to be strong in order to pass. Must show work on quizzes and tests to receive credit. Extraordinary teaching skills. Can be a little stuck up.
Solid professor
Leon is a very respected and in my opinion, one of the best math instructors at pima community college. He does not assign homework, however, doing the homework after every section is extremely recommended.
Luis is the best math teacher at PCC. I had taken 92 in the fall at downtown campus and failed. I took it again with Leon at east campus and did fantastic on the exams. The way he explains the formula's is very clear. Homework is not mandatory but should be done in order to do well on tests. Do your homework, don't skip class. Final grade B.
I love Luis. He is an awesome teacher, and a great guy. However, his grading is not always fair. I understand where he is coming from when he grades, but many people dropped entire letter grades because of such tough grading standards. He also loves to throw algebraic monkey wrenches in his problems to trip you up. Would consider taking him again.
Took this class over summer and the material is very tough. He makes his tests challenging so he knows how well you truly understand. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he mentally keeps track and will dock you if he knows you miss consistently, and missing makes you feel very behind. Slow grader so be prepared to not know your grade day of the final
Took this class with Leon and it was great. The notes are fantastic plus he has them online. Do the homework and study. I got high A's on all his exams, plus the final is optional as long as you get an 85% or better in the over all class. Attendance is not mandatory but even skipping one class can set you behind.
I followed this guy from West all the way to the East campus after taking him in a winter session. Absolutely great and understands that us as students make mistakes but if we're willing to put in the work in tutoring, he recognizes it. So down to earth and gets excited about math which in turn, makes the student excited!
He is probably the most amazing teacher I have ever had. I took him for CalcII and now CalcIII. I received an A in his CalcII so it is possible. You just have to make sure you're understanding it fully. His lectures are clear and exciting, homework is not mandatory. Grade is based of quizzes and tests. He understands math and teaches all learners.
Amazing teacher! One of the best. Tests are tough and he definitely make you work for your grade but he is HIGHLY recommended.
Awesome professor, expect to do the homework, though not collected it is a tool to help you understand and prepare for exams and quizzes. Class is enjoyable makes learning fun. It is a college class be ready
Amazing instructor. His lectures are very easy to understand and he is very straight forward with what he expects from you as a student.
I found Luis' class to be very interesting & helpful. His directions & instruction are very clear & concise. I do have to retake the course. Though the fault for that is my own. I need only have asked and he'd have been more than willing to help and walk me through everything I was stuck on step by step. Wonderful professor and very caring man.
Luis is an amazing instructor but you need to meet him half way. Attendance in this class a must because IT WILL reflect on your exams not b/c hes on top of it. This is a tough class and you have to keep up, missing one day of class will have you completely lost. test are tough but all the hard work pays off! 4 exams, pop up quizzes and a project.
I had his class for fall 2015. he was very helpful and I would love to have him as my teacher again. He is a very nice guy if you ask him for help he will help you!!! Do the homework and you will pass. He only gives out a few tests but the final is pretty easy as well. He tries to make the lectures fun and easy to understand.
Very good class. I had to withdraw from the class because of other intensive classes I was taking. Moderately difficult class with optional homework, but definitely do it. He does pop quizzes and tests, but he drops the lowest test and couple quizzes towards your grade. I signed up again.
He is one of the best math instructors I've ever had! If you're a math/engineering major, definitely take him. His classes are tough, you will be pushed to think and to understand the material. He teaches you the easy problems and tests you on the hard ones all from the book, you have to be the one that bridges everything together.
Amazing professor! I have always had issues with math and he is more helpful than anyone I have ever met! Lots of work but it is worth it to have a clear understanding of the work. He will even host extra class's for the students that want to succeed. Took him for 86 last semester, and I am now in his 92 class. I recommend him 100% .
You do need a textbook, but I used the previous edition to save money and was fine. He didn't assign homework so having the most current textbook isn't essential. He posts all of his lectures on line along with the tests from previous classes so you know exactly what to expect. You do need to show up and practice to pass, but it's not impossible
Leon is very passionate about mathematics, his ability to brilliantly simplify such difficult material so most people can understand is amazing. No homework required, only exams, although I would HIGHLY recommend doing it if you even wanna THINK about passing. His exams are no joke, they are VERY difficult. VERY TOUGH grader.
He is my favorite teacher by far! You can tell he enjoys math and his job which really counts in his lectures.
He loves to answer your questions, he is super clear if you ask questions, he is funny and only teaches you what you need to know, exam questions come from rhe homework. If you a student who wants a good grade and ACTUALLY learn take him. He understands that most people dont like math.
Would and did take again. Amazing lecturer, he explains the math with a couple useful short-cuts. Show up; even though he's not picky about attendance, not attending ensures confusion. Homework: Assigned but not graded, but do it! Tough grader: watch your algebra. Very personable and approachable.
Professor Luis is one of the best teachers that I've ever had, and no doubt is the best math teacher. He's so helpful and always there for you whenever you need help, not only Homework is not mandatory but you have to do it if you want to do well on your tests. The tests are tough but not tricky. All the questions come from the text book.
Luis was one of my favorite teachers at Pima. He didn't assign homework for this calculus class but he assured students during his lectures that they should be able to self prepare. Class is awesome for students who know how to study. Also, make sure to get the textbook. His lectures explain a lot but much work has to be done after class.
Leon is a great teacher. He knows how to use the board and explain concepts very well. He also is ready to answer everyone's questions to the best of his ability. The biggest thing about Math is that you work for your grade, no teacher will just hand it to you. So for a teacher, he is amazing, but you will fail if you don't do your student role.
I had him for an accelerated 8-week course and really enjoyed the clear and simple approach he used with lectures. I would take all my math classes with him. No questions about it.
Luis Leon is a fantastic Math teacher. He cares about your success more than his reputation, and in return, his reputation flourishes. In my 2nd to last semester at Pima, I was able to nominate Luis for an "owl" award through PTK; he truly deserves so much more though. His method is simple: IF you do the homework (optional), you'll get an A.
Took Leon this pass summer session and I was amazed what i was able to get out of this 5 week course. His style of teaching grabs your attention and he is very good at explaining the material. DO THE HOMEWORK! If not you won't pass any of his tests. He demands your best because he believes you can do it. Prime example of a great professor.
I can say enough good things about Leon. His teaching is clear. He makes math fun. Enough said.
To put it simply, Luis is definitely one of the best teachers I've ever had. He has a great sense of humor, he's caring and always willing to help, his grading criteria is very clear, and he gives great feedback. If you're ever taking a math class I would strongly recommend choosing one taught by Luis Leon.
Very friendly and lively teacher. Takes the time to help students who seek it. The homework is not graded but DO IT. If you do the homework, you are likely to pass the tests.
No homework is due, most quizzes are difficult but take-home. Exams are straight forward if you study and do some homework. Luis is very approachable and helpful outside the classroom. One difficult group project is typically assigned. Highly recommend taking for differential equations.
Excellent teacher. Taken him for MAT 220, 231, and 262. Assigns homework and practice, but doesn't collect. All he cares about is that you understand the material well. If you can pass his class with confidence, you will leave the class with confident knowledge of the course material.
I actually took Luis Leon for Calculus 1,2, and 3. Your grade is based off of quizzes and tests. He assigns homework but doesn't have you turn it in. He follows the book and takes examples and problems straight from there. Tests are hard but only because you have to memorize the formulas. He is a really cool dude. Made math class fun
I took the 8 week course and it was great. I thought I was gonna fail but if you work had and do the HOMEWORK you will pass. I tested low in math but managed to get an A here. Recommend finding a mice group to study with!
Not my cup of tea. Lessons are very abstract and does not give examples. Gives a lot of homework however none of it counts for any points. Grade is based on pop quizzes, exams, one project and a final.
I took courses with Luis for Vector Calculus and Differential Equations. He made the material very understandable in class and you would stress because there would be alot of material, but it would be clear. Very knowledgeable and knows how to keep things entertaining. Highly recommend him for any class, do all homework assigned although not graded
Great teacher. All he cares about is that you understand the material. Homework is optional (but encouraged). You're graded by tests, quizzes (usually best of 7 or 8), one project, and a final. Took him for 220 through 262. Would take him for more if the classes were offered.
Took Calc2 over the summer in a 5 week course. Luis is a great teacher and makes the material easy to understand. Lots of (optional) homework, though highly recommended since the tests are straight from there. Tests can be rather difficult. Group project was easy points. Takes forever to grade exams and quizzes though. Overall awesome Teacher!!
Luis Leon is a fun and tough teacher. He is constantly joking, but we always get things done. He is one of the only math teachers I have ever liked. Definitely take this class!
What I think most people on here are forgetting is that there is a difference between a "cool" professor and a good professor. Luis is very funny and makes class fun but that does not mean he is good at explaining the material. If you are just looking for a comedian then Luis is your guy.
Moves way too fast for this level of math. Hate his "going once, going twice, sold" and "who do you fear me or the test" comments. Let's it be known that he doesn't want to cover chapter one of the textbook. You better bring your textbook to class - it is very important. Too many pop quizzes.
At first I was relieved by how funny and energetic he is. Then, I've realized how fast he talks and how quickly he goes over the material. He doesn't grade homework, but there's quizzes & a group project that's worth a lot. After the first test, he realized there were some cheaters so he purposely made the second test harder. The average was 59%.
Luis is a very good and well respected teacher, he does assign a lot of homework that is optional but uses the homework material for quizzes and exams. I suggest not missing class if you can help it as you don't know when he's going to give a quiz which are a make or break for your grade.
While he does assign a lot of homework, he does not collect/grade it. He will, however, give at least ten quizzes, as well as four major tests. He takes questions from the homework for the quizzes and tests, so it is a good idea to do at least some of the homework. He is very good about posting the days notes online, but miss a quiz and it's gone.
Louis is an amazing professor, and an actual Mathematician! So he loves what he does and is very good at it. He cares if the class (as a whole) is ready to move on, but he does have a schedule to keep. So keep up! 4 exams. NO HOMEWORK. He takes attendance via quizzes, so miss class, get a ZERO(no exceptions)!! 85 or higher, no final exam!
Luis is by far the best teacher I've ever had. Funny, smart and great at explaining. Ask questions if you dont understand. Quizzes are crazy hard but you can work together to figure them out. Tests are straight forward. Know your algebra, all of it. He is a quiz and test heavy teacher. Lots of homework but isnt graded. 10 out of 10 recommend.
Never taking him again. Cool guy, but don't know about him being the best teacher. I hated the fact how he says he now grades like the teachers at the University. Just because teachers are strict somewhere else doesn't mean he has to as well. he'll take off all points on a problem just for little errors. never really learned from his lectures.
Great teacher. His methods are easy to understand. Homework is assigned but not graded, but highly recommend to find time for it. Also, he is a tough grader. Over all I will continue to take all his classes. He has a contagious personality and humor makes his lectures fun. I never thought Math could be such a challenge and fun at the same time
Amazing teacher, i learned a lot from him. Possibly one of my favorite classes ever to take. His test are hard but they are literally the homework problems that he doesnt assign to do. There is a project but its super easy since you are in a group. Always available for officer hours or even outside of them if you just email him. Best math teacher
Great teacher, will be taking again. His classes are always full to start with but will clear after a while. Do the homework and you'll do fine. Dont and he'll claim your soul.
He's a nice guy, willing to answer questions. His grading is very tough 4 test, final and a group Project; Any mistake on a test problem and no points even if final answer is correct. The homework is not required but you should do it, it all in the book and a lot of it, however it's not graded. The test are what ever he feels like, study everything
You have to try but if you put in the work you'll be okay. Do the homework and do not skip class. If you are struggling or have questions he is very helpful. Super nice guy, I'm not a math person but still enjoyed his class.
If you struggle with math, even a little bit, do NOT take him. No partial credit, average on exams were in the 40s-50s and he didn't care. Loves failing students. Theyll say exams are from HW but theyre NOT. Actively tries to make exams impossible. If average on exam is 70 he'll make the next exam a mil times harder to lower it. An A is impossible.
Luis knows his material. The problem was that he never taught THIS course before. He liked to spend a lot of class time talking about what his "higher calculus" classes were doing (placed on a pedestal) and showing us their problems which left less time to teach us OUR material. He grades fairly though. His personality is hit or miss. Overall, meh.
I took Calc 1 and Calc 2 with Luis and came into Calc 1 being generally bad at math. Luis's teaching style is head on and challenging but you WILL understand the material. Homework is optional, but he gets 90% of exam questions from the homework. Now after Calc 2 with him, I feel extremely confident for Calc 3 and love math. Best math teacher ever!
Best Math teacher I've ever had. He knows his stuff and knows how to teach it. If you do the work and go to the tutoring center to supplement the lectures, you'll do great. At beginning of semester, he leaves the material of last sem. on website for you to download. Do it! Get prev. exams and quizzes for practice. Man up and he won't take ur soul.
Hands down the best professor a student can ask for. He knows what he doing and goes above and beyond for his students. He knows the material like the back of his hand. Very knowledgeable and I would recommend him to anyone needing to take any math. I cannot thank him enough for all he did.
This has to be one of the worst classes I've ever taken. I certainly hope this instructor is better in person than he is online. He doesn't write his own (poorly written) tests and doesn't care that they aren't good. 30%+ of our class is going to fail. He also repeatedly forgot to let the school know that his students were participating in class.
He is an Ok teacher. I would not take him again. His class is mostly based on the tests. So I would avoid him at all cost.
Still best math professor I've ever had. Because of Covid, the second part of semester was online, which isn't his strength and he did the best he could. His in-person lectures are fantastic. He breaks down even the most difficult topics with ease and explains it in understandable terms. You still have to do the work but he tells you how to do it.
I would not take him. He is test heavy. Does not really care about homework. Not sure if he really cares about his students. Sorta full of himself.
I withdrew halfway through the semester because I felt like I couldn't pass. I often felt rushed in the class because he strives to stay on his schedule but with some delays, he would often try to rush to get back on schedule. This class brought me lots of anxiety and stress and I felt like I couldn't ask for help from Luis.
Luis is the best teacher I've ever taken. His homework is optional is the gradebook, but mandatory if you want to pass, and succeed in math in the future. He's always open to talk in his office during office hours. He's tough, but you learn the material, which is the most important part.
My favorite professor, I have ever had. Great lectures, if you do all the work you will do great on exams. Everything you need to know is given to you, you just need to work.
Luis is an amazing teacher. I was nervous to take calc I but he made it bearable to get through even with the virus closing down campus he tries his best to help you with what you need. He goes above and beyond for students, he really cares.
Luis is a very good math professor. During lectures he goes step by step on how to approach and complete a problem. Your grade depends on the exams and quizzes he gives out. They are very challenging problems but are straight from the book with some SIGN changes. (got me a few times) if you decide to take him be ready to work
Luis is the best math teacher at Pima. He cares about students and prepares them for technical classes. I took his virtual cacl2 class. The material is hard, but if you put the work you will have no problem getting an A. His homework from the book and he goes step by step solving problems. If you want to learn math he is the right teacher for you.
He is really easy to understand, although the homework isn't graded, that is where the quiz questions come from. He really puts in the effort to make sure you understand what he had taught.
I'm usually pretty good at math but it was extremely difficult to pass due to the professor. Homework assignments weren't graded, pop quizzes were everywhere, and the syllabus is not up to date or true. Communication with the professor is extremely poor and if he did get back to you it would be too late or wouldn't answer any questions or concerns.
Very unfair grader! No partial credit but a competent lecturer. On our second test in DiffEqs, I made a subtraction error on the first question, and he marked the four follow-up questions wrong (despite promising partial credit). Took over a month to grade it. Clearly enjoyed making class excesively difficult. Personality definitely hit or miss.
Switched out of his class during the intro lecture, he bragged about students failing his class and about how he's a "bully." The class is virtual but he refuses to use online interactive websites like Webassign, everything is done by reading a text book which is difficult for anyone who doesn't learn by reading. No homework. Only huge exams.
Other professors are hard to compare to Luis. He assigns plenty of homework but none of it is graded. This changes the whole learning dynamic where instead of doing homework to get a good grade, you do homework to actually learn the material. This style works for some and doesn't for others. It sure worked for me. My trig is sharp thanks to him.
This teacher is stuck in the dark ages of text books and very proud about it. He won't use any interactive teaching aids like Webassign, and in calc 3 virtual visualization tools and graphing are extremely helpful so I was shocked of his inflexibility. If you're like me and you don't learn well from a text book, this isn't the instructor for you.
Luis is a really tough grader and he assigns a lot of homework but he does it to help you do math at the university level. He genuinely cares and tries to help you pass. Best part is that he'll always keep it real with you, and tells you straight up that his class is hard. It is 100% worth it though
Luis is one of my favorite instructors I've ever had. I had his class for 3 or 4 semesters and it was super challenging but I came out of each class actually knowing how to do the work. Only negative thing I'd say is he prides himself on being difficult and making it almost impossible (but not quite) to get an A in his course.
As long as you attend class and do the optional homework you will pass easily
Best math teacher I've ever had. He may say he's a "bully" or he enjoys "taking peoples souls" when it comes to math, but he truly cares about students learning. He'll go out of his way to help. His lectures are incredibly detailed and helpful. His quizzes are difficult but tests are easy. Make sure to do homework even though it isn't assigned.
He is the Math Guru, knows a lot of tricks in the book and will prepare you well. Homework was not mandatory but heavily encouraged.
Wicked the day I took this class with him. He is a bully and help students only the way he wants to help. Talks about this life most of the time and do not use web assign making students be more reliable to him. Instead of letting the. Learn independently as it should be.
Luis is challenging, but he is a fantastic teacher if you want to learn math. You have to work and do office hours, but he prepares you for more difficult classes. I struggled in math, and now, when I take physics 210 or 216, math is never my issue. I took him Calc I, II, and III. He isn't easy, but you will learn, and he is such a good person.
The best
I have no doubt that he's smart but he's not a good teacher. At least not the way I can be taught. Didn't really dig the bully mentality and making math harder than it needs to be. Tried to reach out to him via email and he never responded. No apology, just excuses. Withdrew from his class and got an A the next semester.
You'll get a good grade if you're willing to put in the effort. Likes talking about his personal life a lot but knows how to stand on business when it comes to teaching. Would recommend using the textbook to learn outside of class.
best math teacher I have ever had. He explains everything so well and the only reason that people find him a "bully" is because they don't read the textbook. He said from day one to read the textbook and when my third test came there was a problem from the textbook so it could be helpful. Plus gives out what will be great test questions in class
Fair grading, fun professor, it always helps to attend class.
Professor Leon is tough but fair. The class is challenging, but he genuinely cares about helping students succeed. Using resources like unstuck ai and the course textbook can make a big difference.
Great lectures, however, when it comes to grading he is unclear and inconsistent. Material is tough and he is never where expected. He is never where he says he will be and is often late to class. Grades are put in at the very last minute and rushed. He never responds to emails, and absolutely will not round grades no matter what.
This teacher says he liked to fight when he was younger a lot. So many stories during class, and it was almost a 3hr class. He'll call you out in class if you do something wrong, but won't say your name. I wish he just focused on the material.
Luis is an awesome professor. He does his best to help his students succeed. I always felt comfortable asking questions in class. He is a traditional style teacher so you will review material in class and do homework outside. He is tough however. If you are confident in math and want a challenge, Luis is the right professor for you.
Professor Leon genuinely cares about his students and wants you to succeed. The homework is not graded and exams are worth 80% of your grade, so do you homework, practice, do your quizzes and group project to give a grade cushion. He spends a lot of time in the tutoring center and wants to help. I am taking him again for Calc 3.
Took MAT 151 with Luis Leon in person (8-week session). It is fast-paced and test-heavy—missing a day can hurt. He grades tough but fair. If you have a solid background in basic algebra and can stay disciplined, you'll be fine. I enjoyed the challenge and would recommend using the exam samples, quizzes, and staying on top of homework to succeed.
I opted for the in-person class because it had been some years since I've taken a math class. I'm glad that I chose Luis as my professor because his teaching style is very clear and easy to follow. He likes to make jokes to maintain engagement during the lessons––which is much appreciated for an evening class.
No idea how Professor Leon is rated so highly His teaching methods are questionable. Only things graded are the exams and a project Gives lots of ungraded homework that isn't realistic if you are going full time. pray to the math gods if you work and go to school full time if you're in his class. Previous prof's warned me about him.
My math teacher, Luis, is a very good and supportive teacher. His lectures were informative, and he always explained things clearly. I had to take this class two other times and couldn't pass with other teachers, but Luis really focused on helping me when I needed it, which made all the difference, very grateful to have had him as my math teacher.
