Loves to teach, keeps class lively with anedotes, interested in his students
one of my best profs ever... think your fav grandfather
No Comments
Wicked teacher, seems weird but is very normal and fu$%in hilarious
The cutest man ever! By far my favorite professor!
Dedicated to teaching. Helps his students. Best prof I've had.
good communicator
A likeable guy who actually makes an effort to remember your name. Do your assignments! Consider buying study materials instead of the textbook. Keeps the class interesting with jokes and stories. It's an easy class if you try and do the work.
Although he wastes a lot of time in the lectures, he knows his stuff and he is truly friendly towards his students. Great prof that actually cares!
He resents the material in a very interesting, and simple way. The best prof I've ever had. And Hilarious
He is funny, he is considrable, he is pationate, he is caring, he is great!

Best prof I've ever had in UBC!
He is very hard working man. Between all the profs he spends most time on students. He really cares about every single person in class. Although he went really slow at the begining which caused us to do a lot of material on the last week, overall he is good.
Fantastic Teach, Great guy. Trys to learn all the students names.
he is one prof that actually knows his stuff, teaches it very well, and most importantly, has some interest in teaching!! Get him at all cost!
A great teacher who is truly concerned about your learning. I like his style of teaching except he tends to digress a lot...
Great teacher
This guy actually cares about the class. And he cares about his students. This is not suppose to happen in a research university
the best professor i've ever had... he's not only effective in teaching the materials... but also very caring for every single students... a teacher that spends the most time on his students
He is a great teacher. His caring attitude really made a difference for me. Highly recommended.
He is simply WONDEFUL
He is cool okay but he likes EngPhysics better than us.
nothing to say, THE best teacher in EE i think
A great prof! and funny too!
The best teacher i have ever had!
This guy is just great. He gives execellent notes and very interesting lectures. He is very helpful and seems very considerate of students. He really does care about his students.
He is just the best professor i have ever had....He is interested in the class, he is good at explaining....i actually like to go to his class. He's not like your averange enginering boring, useless teacher......CHOOSE IT AS A TEACHER IF YOU CAN....BELIEVE ME !! He is just good at teaching...HE ACTUALLY MEMORIZED THE NAME OF EACH STUDENT (100 STS)
The Wizard of OS! Vivid and story-esque style of teaching makes him one of the most adorable professors in UBC. Makes great effort to make material easy and interesting, and entertains students. Strongly recommended!
Best engineering prof ever! Humorous and helpful at the same time.
Great prof ever! Trust he is the one you should follow without any doubt. Strongly Recommended!
hit guy memorized and know the name of every student (100 sts)...HIS NOTOES ARE GREAT, HIS CLASS IS HUMOROUS....He is by far the best professor in engineering...HE IS A EXCELENT TEACHER....Take the course with him ....he is just amazing A++
Great! Can't be better
Amazing prof. Sets a standard that I have never seen before. Makes the course very easy to follow and keeps lectures interesting. Only complaint is that some of the assignment questions are ridiculously long or hard, and there is little to no textbook use (it's only used for practice problems, and rarely at that).
BEST PROF AT UBC ELEC ENG... MAKE SURE U TAKE HIS SECTION IF UR TAKING ECE251
Great, truly inspirational teacher. His methods for teaching are effective and at the same time he cracks a lot of senseless yet entertaining jokes..One of the few profs that show an interest in students' progress and presents otherwise difficult topics in a non-threatening, simple manner. Hope to have him for another course in the future.
Absolutely awesome teacher, as you can see by other comments. Loves teaching, very motivating, unimaginably helpful. He's funny and entertaining. Often incorporates references to pop-culture in his lectures. A very rare personality. Should be cloned for the benefit of future generations.
Enjoyable lectures. Very effective teaching. Presentation is clear and neat. Go to lectures and you'll learn the concepts. Assignments are very long. Midterms/finals resemble the assignments but way shorter and easier. Personally, I found his course very interesting and I did well with minimal studying.
just attend in lectures , you wont need to study , you 'll understand everything in class .. he makes the course soooo easy ... amazing prof
Best prof I have had so far, no question. His teaching is just in a whole other league compared to others. He teaches effectively and gets a maximum volume of ideas across with a very minimum amount of speaking. His lectures are as much about entertainment as they are about education. I only wish all the others even came close.
The best in electrical, maybe even the whole school? Linares is god, Jesus helps a little too.
Lectures were fun/entertaining. Course moved slowly and didn't go into much depth. The way he gives exams makes them pretty thoroughly meaningless (more a test of writing speed than understanding or knowledge), and they determine most of your mark, unfortunately.
former teaching award winner not so good anymore. treats you well if you do good in his class, and****ty if you do poorly or if u miss a class or two. makes a fairly easy class hard plus a ridiculous amount of work.
He's the most caring prof I've ever had in my 3 years of UBC. He's very funny and is clear in teahcing. Unlike most engineering classes, I will remember things I learned in his class :)
The best professor in UBC Engineering. Extremely great to get along with. Extremely smart. Very humble. Great teaching method. Though the labs are hard.
I challenge you to find a better professor and a person than him! He is the best and most caring professor you will have!
LINARES IS THE BEST!!! Best prof I've ever met. He makes videos on youtube which makes him even cooler! Always go to lectures and do your homework. You'll get at least an A in the course. Midterms and finals are really hard but if you do your homework and review each day, you'll definitely get 100%.
Awesome instructor. Very challenging course, but his lectures always captured my attention. He has a good sense of humour too.
He is really helpful and nice. As long as you go to class and pay attention, it's easy to do well in his class.
He is the best professor in UBC! He is kind, helpful, and he also can remember all the name of his students! :D
a model of what a professor should be, his lectures he makes entertaining! he adds in funny analogies that you will remember and grabs your attention with his crazy teaching tactics, one of the best profs i've had at UBC. I hope i have more classes with him, i actually enjoy going to his lectures!
Best professor in 2nd year for sure. Classes are entertaining and insightful but goes off-topic some of the time. Got A+ for both EECE 251 and 253; 251 was a cakewalk, but 253 was tough and I bombed the midterms. However, he makes it so that the final exam grade becomes your final grade if you do well!
Funny, interesting, good speaker and fun to chat with. All that aside, I wish he'd spend more time in class explaining the material instead of talking about Charlie Brown. He cares enough to remember everyone's name and make video tutorials but his notes/slides are not enough, you have to find additional sources. 20% of the class failed the course.
awesome prof, posts vidoes on youtube t
Very Good lectures, but very, very deceptive. Be aware of this guy and all 251 sections in general. Makes you feel like you know everything until the finals come and you feel like you're taking the wrong final. I went into the final with a 95 (midterms + hw), came out with a ridiculous 68 (total grade). This is not a hate comment. This is for real.
In contrast to the majority of the class, I found him highly inefficient. Wastes a lot of time in class talking about irrelevant stuff; time that could better be spent on the course material. He also lingers on the easy stuff and leave the hard stuff for the students to do by themselves. If you want this class, I suggest enrolling in Yan's.
Dr. Linares is definitely the perfect prof. He cares about how well his students understand the material and can use it in real world application, unlike others who just care about what the textbook says. His online tutorials cover most of the material and its associated problems. He doesn't spoon feed students, so it takes some effort to get an A.
awesome
Best Professor Ever!
best professor i've ever had period. no doubt
The best professor i've had in all of my 6 years of education. Nobody even comes close. Linares is more than just a professor he's a provocateur, he's a legend. It was a pleasure to have him for 2 courses in circuit analysis. He makes coming to class enjoyable, I always enjoyed going to his classes he made them entertaining and enciteful.
The best lecturer I have had at UBC by miles. Not only are his classes entertaining, I also learn new concepts with ease.
Awesome prof, best I have ever had at UBC. Only thing he does wrong is not teach my other 5 courses a semester.
Dr Linares is by far the greatest professor i've had in my Pursuit for a degree in engineering, Cares for the students, Crystal clear lectures which are reflected through his great knowledge of the material and are extremely entertaining! he has a lot of interesting stories to tell. Looking forward to taking more classes with him
My favorite prof overall. His lectures are great (only missed them because they were in the morning I liked to sleep in) and his excellent video lectures cover most of the course material and rival the quality of Khan Academy (and nicely complement them since Khan mainly offers math and physics rather than ECE).
Most interesting and entertaining prof I've ever had. He makes circuit analysis seem like a piece of cake! I also enjoy the pop culture references every now and then.
Best Prof ever, period.
Best Prof Ever.
Best ever
Dr Linares is very funny, and very much wants you to succeed. He makes his lectures available as videos for studying. His "midterms" are short biweekly quizzes, where the mark is combined between you score on your own and a group portion (the questions are the same). He is a legend.
Awesome prof
He really cares! His videos are very helpful - they're all on YouTube..
Professor Linares is the most interesting man in the world. Just an amazing, spectacular human being. He should win an award. Loved his videos. Loved the HP-50g. Loved the midterms being spread out. Just wow. Such learning. So awesome. Amaze.
Best prof you'll have in ECE.
SO VERY GOOD!
Prior to this course, I absolutely hated circuit analysis. Dr. Linares changed my perspective entirely. He taught the concepts of circuits extremely well and after finishing this course, I am much more confident in the topics of circuit analysis.
The prof is so good that I am considering changing my degree to have him more.
Probably the best prof one can have throughout the engineering degree. Will make you love electric circuits like anything. Excellent videos on his youtube channel. EECE students are fortunate to have a professor like him
I have always heard about students having personal favourite profs! I hav never had one, until I took 251 with Dr. Linares. Awesome prof, very friendly and helpful. Makes the contents look so easy that sometimes I wonder am I in Arts.
one of the two best instructors i've ever had. super nice, funny, helpful.
UBC is lucky to have Linares. This guy is the absolute best. By the end of the term, I was studying hard to do well in the final, not just to further my degree, but also to make him proud. Sometimes I wish he was my grandpa.
The only prof who actually cares. He puts all his time and efforts to teach his students--making video tutorials for review is just one of them. He teaches with passion and is very reasonable with his midterms and final exams. Honestly, I learned more basic and useful things in his class compared to my first year professors who don't even care.
One of the best professors at UBC. Truly cares about each and every one of his students. Very clear on what he wants to have covered and is very open to help. Creates YouTube tutorials for his students. He makes all the students very proud, making thing feel like they need to do well to make him proud.
Dr. Linares is the best professor I've had so far. Although I regret not being able to see most of his lectures, the few ones I've been to were amazing, and I definitely would've went if I didn't have so much work to do. His lectures both online and live are works of art. He makes it possible to pass with just online resources!
Linares is a great guy. He clearly loves teaching and puts a lot of effort and time into his work. Just by virtue of that, he's a worthwhile teacher. Now on the otherhand, the guy's pretty disorganized. He's always changing things last minute, jumping around, and often says one thing and does another, which makes him difficult to trust or rely on.
I really miss the first half of the course. He is So good compared to other teachers in the ECE department.
One of the best profs at UBC. By far.
Dr.Linares is by far the most comprehensive and interesting professor that I have encountered. He cares for every student's learning concerns, and makes difficult concepts seem exceptionally easy.
Dr. Linares has great intentions. He has love for the students, and puts lots of efforts into his lectures. Unfortunately, he is disorganized, spontaneous in homework, and messes up new technologies often. This caused much frustration for me this year. I am a top student and spent many unnecessary hours dealing with his mistakes. Very frustrating.
So engaging. His explanations are just crystal clear. Really cares about how well his students do in his courses. Quite disorganized at times (sometimes posts the lab manual the night before the lab, often late for class, makes last-second changes to labs and assignments, etc) but he makes up for it with his passion for teaching.
Really great professor, very engaging lectures.
One of the best professors in North America in Electrical Engineering and the best teacher in UBC by far.
Over the years, Dr. Linares made an extensive collection of excellent videos covering course and test material. This year, he relied on those videos to do the teaching for him. There is virtually no feedback on assignments (participation mark) or tests - you get a mark, but who knows if you did it right? I feel ill-prepared for future classes.
Dr. Linares cares deeply about what he does and seems to care about his students' success. However, the level of disorder in his lectures and emails will take significant time out of your week just to sort through the mess. My advice: he was fantastic in the past, but he has lost his touch and has unreasonable expectations. Stay away if you can.
I have to say, Dr Linares is a nice person and very charming and humorous. He's fun to talk to and does a good job of trying to explain the material. However his exams are totally unfair and he does not prepare you for them! The final will not be like the assignments, quizzes or videos on old exam q's. BEWARE, never been so disappointed.
Linares is disorganized and you will spend many precious hours wasted trying to keep up with him and his changing directions. He spent half the lectures telling jokes looking for laughs, only to leave you totally unprepared for the midterms. He likes to create drama and chaos around marks and grading in order to put students under pressure.
Great in EECE 251, worst prof ever in 253. Lecture slides are scattered, material is neither concise nor organized, and the schedule he follows is very erratic. Claims that 'video tutorials' make up for class, but are not organized or easy to find. Class material did not match tests.
For 253: Worst professor I have ever had at UBC. Hope he reads these reviews and changes his ways. There was absolutely no material to study and prepare for the final. He did not mark assignments or give any feedback, his quizzes (worth nothing) were NOTHING like the final. If you take this course with him, you will go into it unprepared. Good luck
Great prof, puts so much into his teaching and classes. Midterms can be a bit tough because he had an all or nothing grading scheme, but final had part marks.
He a very nice professor, who shows a lot of respect to students. However, you would never expect what is on the quizzes and the final. hoho... There was once a question "calculate the voltage inside a magical black box... " on the quiz. Sometimes, he is also monotone.
Great Professor! Really cares about his students and provides lots of opportunity to improve your grade if you work hard.
Dr. Linares is a great prof! His final exam was very fair. He cares a lot about the students , and is willing to help boost grades if students participate and show interest.
Absolutely the best prof in EE. Explanations are extremely clear, homework is sometimes tough but is quite rewarding. I recommend working on WebWork in a group of friends and give each other feedback. Linares himself is super helpful and approachable, tells interesting real life stories that are quite inspirational.
The most horrible professor I have ever had in my life. Constantly shows up to lecture late, frequently runs over time, making students late to their next classes. Assigns labs and homework before the material is covered in lecture, online homework assignments are a mess of bugs and errors. Labs are completely useless yet mandatory to pass
The worst professor I will ever have in my life. Unclear about what's on exams, and consistently late for class. Lectures aren't helpful for assignments or exams. Expects students to come to office hours to learn material that he didn't have time to teach in class. Prides himself in teaching but he's lost all ability to engage his students.
I love his style of teaching and the course isn't necessarily hard. However, the all or nothing grading schemes for midterms were a bummer. Just be prepared to strive for B.R.P. I found this course a bit annoying as it was hard to go see previous midterms, and the sheer thought of passing the final and still failing was cruel.
Awful instructor. Avoid this professor and take ELEC342 withJuri instead. You will be assigned homework every week and a kicker of a midterm without any of the material being similar to the homework. Also stress out about not attending lecture because he uses TopHat to grade you for participation.
Linares is an awesome person and an awful professor. He loves and cares for his students, but rarely manages to effectively teach the material. In this course, he did not clearly teach the material, and when he did, he used his own little methods, rather than the industry standards he claims to know so well.
Make sure you can get BRP. I went from getting 14 percent on midterms (due to grading scheme) to 97 in the course overall cause of BRP. He is a very caring prof and wants to see his students succeed. That being said, make sure you do your part of the work ie. complete assignments, come to class (required for BRP!) and ask questions.
Unless your idea of an ideal school experience are to teach the entire course yourself while having to attend hours of mandatory un-informative lectures where Dr. Linares talks about his personal life, do not pay for this course, take it any other way. He will lie about what the tests content is on as well, beware.
This professor made me absolutely despise the very course that was supposed to be the reason I went into ECE. An impromptu orgy is better planned and structured than this course IMO; midterm (5 per term btw) content is never clarified, and he makes you go to his useless life story seminars (read: lectures) for BRP. Avoid at all costs.
Listen, I am not going to lie to you. Dr. Linares is a tough grader; Fair but tough. If you show real effort, and willingness to learn, he will help you. If you do not even make an effort to do YOUR part studying/homework, etc he'll be less sympathetic when you are struggling. He knows his stuff VERY well; You will not walk out unprepared
Disappointing professor. Refuses to help and is very rude.
Horrid instructor. Essentially forces you to buy BRP, midterms are a huge time crunch and are usually cruel and difficult, and is probably the most unhelpful professor at UBC. Rude and condescending on Piazza, answers questions with either "look at your notes" or with another question.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. HORRIBLE GRADING SCHEME!
He literally did not teach anything for his half of the course.... completely useless and unhelpful, seems to have some superiority complex/ego problem. avoid. makes you buy tophat for his horrible marking as well
Take this prof if you enjoy hours of Luis talking about himself and how the material is really easy (calls problems trivial when students ask for help). He roasts people on piazza and is super sarcastic, and on top of that midterms are final answer only, and final exam is marked brutally because if ur process is right, its only 40% of mark
He cannot teach material effectively, very rude to students in class and online forum. He spend maybe half a class on a topic, then give difficult testing on it, when no one in the class can complete topic. Overall, a terrible prof. Clearly, he has a problem with ego
Literally just a horrible person. He spends most of class either boasting how great of a prof he is or telling an irrelevant story. His midterms are final answer only and frequently have topics that haven't been covered yet. The entire course is literally learn how to use the glitch calculator. Also lectures are mandatory to pass.
What a ridiculous course and prof. Talks down and is super patrionizing, and clearly doesn't care for his students when he doesn't even show up to midterms. Vague on test content, and enacts a mindblowing convoluted grading scheme that serves no purpose except to stress students out (final worth 80% btw).
Useless lectures that are mandatory. No office hours from him or TA's, not willing to help on piazza and gets paid to literally do nothing since the midterms are marked by webwork. He's also a creep that hits on the girls in his class and thinks he's the greatest thing to happen since sliced bread. Makes you buy an overpriced calculator also.
Dr Linares is egotistical and rude. He talk about us being med students and saying we should memorize all our formulas, and also, his midterms are unfair. Clearly, he has no regard for student learning, and canceled class yet still had a midterm on same day... Quite lazy, and also, rude when asking for help, plus no office hours.
He doesn't teach. Straight up tells you if you want to learn go watch his YouTube videos. Problem is class is mandatory and you can't do any other homework or he'll call you out. He's also very rude, especially to women and lowkey hits on the girls in his class.
The material itself is not too bad, but Luis likes to make it extra difficult and put unnecessary stress on the students because he has a big ego. Consistently rude, didn't show up to midterms, unable to teach effectively; honestly, it's a miracle he has a teaching award. Worst prof in ECE by far.
Nice guy but course is structured extremely poorly. Just read the textbook for his section and tune him out during lectures because you won't learn a single thing in class.
What even is this guy? Like seriously who gave this guy a degree and a job at this school. Not sure if he's old and senile or taking advantage of the legalisation of hash. Lectures are so pointless but mandatory to pass, he's very rude and his midterm marking scheme is complete bs. Avoid at all costs! You have been warned...
It's hilarious how this guy actually believes he's not just a good prof, but a great prof. His slides are all watermarked with this teaching award he won ten years ago and he literally just rambles about his life in class. Only thing you learn is how to the overpriced mandatory calculator for his course that only he uses.
Doesnt teach you the material, you have to learn it yourself. Uses a terrible calculator that he expects works fine but crashes all the time. Lectures are not helpful and he spends half the time talking about his life story, and were required to be there if we want BRP.
I like that the course material doesn't require that much teaching time. That gives many opportunities for Lineres to give entertaining life stories. It is impossible to get sleepy in his class. There are five mini midterms for the semester that are quite difficult on the spot but serve as good study material. The WeBWorK homework given is good too
Warning to all incoming ELEC students. There is no way to avoid taking him, but he will make you hate engineering. Lectures are disorganized. Exams are deliberately too hard (20-30% average). BRP replaces your midterms with your final grade and is your only hope of passing. However, to get BRP, you must attend his useless lectures (storytime).
I knew what I was getting into, as I had him for 201. I can only hope he or someone in ECE sees these reviews and does something about his teaching policies. His lectures consist mostly of his stories. His midterms are deliberately too hard (and often incorrect) to force his students to attend lectures for BRP.
At first he seems like a genuine guy and a nice prof, but after the first couple weeks with him you realize that's all one big facade. Very rude to his students and disorganized during lectures. There's no office hours from him or his TA's either so if you don't get something in his lecture (which happens a lot) you'll do poorly on the midterms.
I thought he couldn't be any worse after having him in 201. That was my second mistake. My first mistake was going into electrical engineering.
I was so excited going into his class after seeing how high his rate my prof was (4.5 about 6 months ago). Wow was that a let down or what? Hardly taught anything in class and expected us to watch 5 40 minute youtube videos on top of everything. Can't even do other work in his class or he will literally walk up to you in a gigantic lecture theater.
Wow! You know those really, REALLY bad profs you see in movies and then you think to yourself "no way profs are that bad." Well let me tell you something, this guy is worse than anything you can imagine. Worse part is you'll have him for 3 classes if you're in ELEC. I can allow wish you the best of luck when it comes to Linares.
Man after getting through 201 and 202 I thought that I could handle a full semester with Linares. I passed but idk what's left of my sanity. Every semester he get exponentially worse. There was one class where he literally, and I mean literally, didn't go over anything other than one of his life stories. To think I'm paying 40k to be his counselor.
Luis prides himself in his teaching, but unfortunately, there is not much to be proud of. He is VERY rude and condescending to students, roasted people on piazza for asking valid questions, webwork is a mess of bugs and errors, and his final answer midterm even had a wrong answer once that he REFUSED to admit was wrong. Big ego, worse prof.
Linares doesn't care much about his students. Is very disrespectful and egotistical. His lectures are disorganized and filled with his rambling stories. His midterms are deliberately too hard and two of them had mistakes he refused to correct or even acknowledge (ignored any messages, emails and piazza posts about it)
We were often tested on stuff not taught in class. Usually he would tell us to watch videos on the topics, but were occasionally blind sided by topics not yet discussed. the midterms were final answer only, way too hard and full of errors he wouldn't correct.
not a very hard prof, just really bad. He often gets distracted in class, and wastes our time. Anything he forgets to cover is still testable and we teach ourselves. Plus the midterms are basically impossible, with a 20-30% average. But don't worry about them, as long as you get BRP the final will replace them, and its super easy
He doesn't seem to care much about his students. He doesn't hold office hours and when you ask for help he just tells you to watch videos. His classes are disorganized and he often gets off topic. He has a huge ego and will often rant about how lucky we are to have him as a prof. But don't worry, you'll still be tested on material he doesn't teach
His tests are unreasonable. His classes are useless. He spends more time telling stories but he still expects us to learn the stuff he doesn't bother to teach. Overall the worst prof in ECE
Linares' ego is almost as large as his class is bad. Everyday is just storytime for him. We maybe get 20 minutes of actual class time, and he focuses more on anectodes then actual application. We need to watch videos to learn the other 80% of the class, but he won't let us watch it in his class. Oh and attendance is mandatory
Winter 2017. He started doing midterms with Webwork and one exam the system wasn't recognizing the correct answers. A bunch of people should have aced it, but Linares kept denying any Webwork system errors. He started ignoring my piazza messages too. Horrible prof. Also he sometimes snaps and spams TopHat. Final wasn't reflective of course material
His classes were so disorganized that it was impossible to learn anything. We were always going overtime and being late for the next class. But it wasn't because he was teaching a lot. He was constantly distracted and going on tangents. As a result we missed out on two thirds of the topics and we needed to learn them on our own time.
He regularly has mistakes in his webworks and exams and refuses to correct them. If you ask about it he will straight up ignore you. Rude man, bad prof
One of the most disrespectful profs ever. Not to mention his grading criteria is so convoluted and is designed purely to force you to attend his storytelling seminars.
Would recommend students to specifically search for other professors . It is understandable that the courses "ELEC201/202" are meant to weed out students, but this professor will make even the students that pass hate this course and subject, when it supposedly teaches the basics and core concepts of electrical engineering.
Best prof in ece so far , idk why people hate him.
Thankfully I transferred out of ELEC into a way higher quality program so I won't have to take a class with this guy ever again. What a terrible teacher, and a rude man as well.
skip class you won't pass but guess what? he doesn't teach anything during the class but dw he has killiam teaching prize. avoid at all costs!!!! he will make you hate the course.
One of the best profs I've had at UBC. Not only learned about electric circuits, but about life in general. Very inspiring.
Without a doubt the worse prof in UBC. His ego is second only to dictators, and he uses an extremely convoluted grading scheme for the course. Midterms are littered with errors (which are done on Webwork for some reason) which he does not address. Does NOT take any criticism and will ban students from Piazza for it, no matter how constructive.
I like this course, it's what I went into Elec for. Can't understand why other like to moan about Prof Linares, I found him funny and entertaining. Sure you gotta read and put in the work, you get out what you put in (if you have the talent
In 201 he seemed like a nice guy but in 202 I saw his true colors. His ego is the tallest thing in this world. Highy disrespectful towards students. Highly inconsiderate and demotivating. I regret taking electrical engineering because if him.
Oh man, the professor just makes the class much more harder. His teaching is not organized and it is unclear. Exams are tricky and you are very likely to find mistakes in the exams.
elec 202 is supposed to be the crux of electrical engineering. But this prof made me dislike this degree. All because of his arrogance and his argumentative nature with students. His expectations and exams are unreasonable.
When the whole science community believes that your problem solving skills and method are more important than just the final answer this prof cares only about the final answer and arges the procedure doesn't help. Try telling him this as constructive feedback you receive his harsh arrogance in return. Stay away from him and his ego.
Terrible professor. This course is really ELEC 342 (used to be called EECE 373). He has a backward replacement policy which is useless. He gave us a final of which the average had to be 30-40%. Everyone's grades dropped. 5 questions on the exam of which only 2 were doable. Definitely a high failure rate this year. Crazy prof. Enough said.
Makes you waste money on Top Hat, so you are forced to come to class to hear him rambling about his teaching award that is a glorified participation trophy. Thinks he is an amazing teacher, but really is condescending and rude. One of the reasons that the ECE program at UBC is slowly becoming the neglected little brother of engineering programs.
genuinely cares about his students and it is evident that he is extremely passionate about the subject. Just be attentive during his lectures and the course will be really fun
he is an amazing and experienced prof who works really hard for the course to be better and easier for the students to learn. p.s-Make sure you get BRP. It will really help.
Going into my first class with Professor Linares, I was very fearful as I've heard many bad things about them. Even with this negative bias I had going in, I was almost instantly won over by his amazing way of explaining concepts and his obvious care in teaching his students. Professor Linares provides you with countless resources to help you.
Final answer only, doesn't care at all about anyone other than himself, and talks only about his wealth and car because he is a senile old man. Makes inappropriate comments to students, but administration will not do anything about it. Tenured profs can be narcissistic and disrespectful as much as they want, it seems.
It's extremely saddening that Linares does not test on what he teaches, as he will make significant efforts to unreasonably fail many students, by including insanely difficult question on exams/midterms, as well as homework. He has a rude temper, cuts students off when talking, and has a terrible personality. I hope he takes some time to reflect.
Prepare to work extremely hard, and don't expect him to be considerate about things (including when the exam's marking scheme is incorrect). He has an ego and is picky with who he chooses to help - so expect to fail you if you manage to offend him. The grading criteria he uses is unreasonable. I would actively work to avoid taking a class with him.
Linares is one of the notorious EE professors that you can never avoid as he teaches many pre-req courses. He demands in-class participation, live questions (for marks) and scatters midterms throughout the term. He poorly prepares for lectures, goes off the top of his head by reading slides as he teaches them, and lacks clarity when speaking.
worst prof ever. Sends out emails that says bs like "if you received 50-64%, you are gonna fail in life". Makes passing requirement unreasonably difficult. You ask a subject related question, he answers by saying some irrelevant stuff and gets arrogant af for asking a simple question. He's super proud of the fact that 20% of the students fail
Great Prof. Very clear about the course requirements and difficulty and even has a youtube channel to explain in detail the topics that the class is struggling with. Difficult work but well taught if you put in the effort and actually go to class.
My favourite professor in ELEC. He is genuinely a fantastic professor who is excited to teach the material and inspire his students. The marking scheme is hard but fair, all you need to do is get BRP through attending classes and answering tophat and you'll get through this class easily
He doesn't care about literally everything. Firstly asked us to buy 200$ calculator even though we always used an emulator on laptops during hw and lectures. Secondly, his lectures are useless because he prerecorded pretty good material not for his students but for some kind of award. I worked my ass off to get the BRP but still failed the course.
Look, you'll either love the guy or hate him. He's the most polarizing figure in UBC engineering. I like him because his explanations make sense to me and he does a ton of examples, no theory bs (which doesn't matter to me). People dislike him because he insists his class is the apex of your life and he's way, way more formal than most profs.
Final answer only finals, no syllabus, no structure. Just kind of makes it up as he goes along.
A lot of people seem to get the idea that he has an ego or something. He tells some personal anecdotes and I find that it breaks up the monotony of 2h lectures. Some of his lectures were genuinely really funny. Occasionally cuts people off and has some trouble operating zoom. Silky smooth audiobook teir voice. Participation marks can be annoying
Best prof in ECE. However, his courses aren't for everyone. The online classes are very tophat heavy, but in-person it is much better. Expect to do badly on some quizzes, they are done via webwork final answer. Otherwise, amazing prof. Just be wary that he may give you a broken/unanswerable question or lab, by accident.
Linares is a fun professor don't get me wrong, but his grading policies are quite unfair. Answer only midterms and finals and absurd passing policies. Do NOT miss lectures, you will not pass the course.
Good lectures, very frequent office hours through Zoom. Attendance is mandatory and he gives "bonus points" out for answering questions in class, but they're not actual bonus points. His bonus points are actually one-day homework extensions, which are actually really nice to have and keep students engaged.
Calculator man
A very engaging professor. It was very easy to get out of bed at 6am to attend lectures twice a week. You can tell he is very passionate about teaching. Homework was well designed and super helpful to understanding course material. Absolutely one of the best lecturers I've ever had.
Professor Linares is the Engineer I aspire to be. While the test format is something everyone complains about - it makes sense the way he does it. Prof Linares gives his students every opportunity to learn the content through lectures and videos. The final exam was very difficult but that is how some courses go. Stay commited and you will do fine.
Weird and annoying prof. Out of the 25 courses I've taken, this prof definitely has the most annoying rules. Including a dictatorial style of running piazza and an archaic attendance and bonus point system that he uses to benefit his fav students and further push down the students he dislikes.
WOEST prof I've ever experienced, should have changed the course code to HP-Prime 202. You should avoid him if you can.
bOnus pOint!
Bonus point
You'll either love him or hate him. As a person, Linares seems like a good guy who clearly puts a lot of time into his lectures and offers countless office hours. Get ready for lots of midterms. And yes, his gazillion pass requirements do add extra stress to this class (specifically having to pass both parts of a webwork final).
ELEC201 gives Linares a bad rep. Yes, his policies are strict, but they encourage you to do well in class. Linares is an amazing lecturer and one of my favorite ECE professors. He is always down to hold office hours at 11PM on a Tuesday, and will make sure everyone understands before moving on.
Attendence is extremely important. Hard webwork. But you will be safe if you follow the slides exactly and use HP-prime in his way. Exams can be hard, but remeber there is a grade replacement policy.
Professor Linares loves HP prime, majority of the content in the course won't be solvable without using HP prime. It's a good thing that you don't need to waste time on calculations but at the same time you don't learn as much. His midterms and exams are really difficult with some averaging below 50%, and keep in mind the midterms are on webwork.
I see both sides of the polarizing reviews. His teaching policies are very strict, the course is heavily reliant on the hp prime and the ego replies on piazza are crazy. Though as long as you keep up with lectures, assignments and get familiar with the calculator you can get by. The exams were expectedly brutal but many questions did come from hws.
Linares' class has a lot of strict policies, but they encourage you to engage. The lectures are great, and Unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep. Overall, it's a challenging yet rewarding course.
..........
Luis is nice! but the webwork quizzes can go either way he does seem like cares about the subject and his explanations are very clear, however, his slides are a mess and can be annoying to work through.
Going into ELEC201 I saw a lot of negative feedback about Dr Linares. I'm not sure if he was different in the past but I found Dr Linares to be a very kind person and not egotistical. He's always making himself available in the evenings treats his students with respect which I appreciated. He could maybe stream his lectures, not a big deal though.
The professor spent a good 3 weeks covering easy review for ELEC 202 which felt like a waste of time. Expects you to watch his youtube videos outside of class for numerical examples because nothing is taught in class. Final has sync motors which he doesn't have examples for. Rushed 3ph xformers at the end which is heavy on the final.
Pacing of the course could be improved to not rush 3-phase transformers and sync generators at the end. I enjoyed the structure of the homeworks because of the way the questions would build up in complexity, which made it easier to build understanding of the content. The 4 midterms added a lot of stress during the term, but they were fair.
This guy played Genshin Impact until 4 am before his final exam, so he slept and almost missed it (45 minutes late).
To be honest, he teaches quite well, but he has a bit of a temper. Runs the piazza with an iron fist, and I have heard of some peers getting banned after criticising his exam formats. Also there was the "showing up 45 minutes late to the final exam" thing that others have mentioned.
Linares is an amazing lecturer and can teach such an interesting course in a fun and engaging manner. His BRP works well if you do not do well on his midterms, so make sure to do all iClickers in class. Though I felt like the lab portion was not very relevant to the course and he may be troll on Piazza, Linares is a great professor.
This man has convinced himself his webwork tests are the work of a genius when its really because he doesn't want to grade papers. These tests do not accurately reflect students' knowledge at all. He makes students pay for tophat instead of using iclicker (free). Worst of all, he is luring other elec profs into running their courses the same way.
This man has convinced himself that his WebWork all-or-nothing midterms and final exam are the work of a genius when really he just doesn't want to grade papers. He forces students to pay for TopHat instead of using iClicker, the free alternative every other prof uses. Worst of all, he is luring other ELEC profs into following his testing schemes.
better than other profs in ece
Okay tbh he was nice to me
Mr. Linares is a kindhearted professor, always willing to help students, just make sure you show up to class, regardless if you want to get bonus points or not. His YouTube videos are great and informative, you should watch them! The midterms are a bit scuffed, though, and based on whether you did the homework and your calculator is working.
He is a kind prof, I like his videos!!!! Although the course content after midterm 2 starts to get harder
While a phenomenal lecturer, Linares is a horrendous examiner. He is inconsistent with how how the exams are made/run. Although, it is a very rewarding for students who can memorize solutions. Exam questions are often recycled from assignments but with different numbers. If you can memorize the solution to the assignment questions, you're golden.
His all or nothing exams pushed my hairline back at least 0.5cm this semester with how stressful they were. Other than that he's fine. A good lecturer. To his credit, he does spend a lot of time on piazza and is almost always willing to help you with a question.
1/5 as raw mark but scaled to 5/5 among other profs in ECE.
