He is a good professor. He is strict but makes the class subject interesting.
You need to get things in writing as he often goes back on his word.
Dr. Materon is an excellent professor and as such, he demands perfection from students. I would certainly recommend Dr. Materon if you are serious about your education.

Dr. Materon is an elitist, class is difficult and you will probably have to drop course. The biology department just hired a second microbiology professor, eventually no one will register for his course and he will realize he is unwanted.
THE WORST INSTRUCTOR IN THE BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT. THE SUBJECT IS REALLY INTERSTING BUT THE MAN THAT TEACHES IT JUST BITES. A GOOD PROFESSOR WOULD COVER THE MAIN CONCEPTS AND TRY TO TAKE INTO A FURTHER PERSPECTIVE. HE ASKS QUESTIONS THAT ARE IRRELEVANT.
Great professor. The reason why some students have a problem with his class is because they are lazy and are not used to EARN their grades.
I HAVE TO AGREE THAT HIS CLASS IS A CHALLENGE, BUT HE GIVES GRADES OUT. I BARELY PASS THE 1, 3, AND FINAL TESTS BUT MANAGED TO PASS THE 2 TEST WITH A GOOD GRADE. I WAS SUPPOSE TO GET A C BUT GOT AN A BECAUSE I KISSED _ _ _.
His class is tough but if you know how to study for his tests, you'll be ok. The first test, I got a 70. Second test, 93. Third, 99. The final test I bombed with a C but he gave me an A in class. Go figure. But in the end, the class isn't impossible
A very demanding professor. His tests are hard if you dont study enough or know how it. I do agree that some of the questions are trivial in nature. However, he does push you to work on your grade.

This is a great professor, who makes you work hard and learn. His tests are a little tough, which makes you study, and actually learn the subject. This class is definitelly not for lazy, multiple choice, I want an easy A students, this is good for someone who really wants to learn, and understand microbiology completely.
Good professor. He teaches for you to learn. His tests are challenging, but if you study correctly and pay attention in class, you should do well in the tests. Many people hated his tests, but that is because they were not used to studying. Going to class and studying is essential to pass the course. I EARNED my A, and got into his Hall of Fame.
His tests are all trivia. If you're learning concepts, you're studying incorrectly for this class. Also, I found blatantly wrong information in his notes. I would NOT recommend this professor unless you are one of those people who can memorize notes word for word. If you are a concept person, you will not get a good grade and only end up frustrated
His course is too difficult. I repeated his course and as a lesson from the first attempt, I studied hard and read every chapter. His test questions are completely trivial, I did very poorly on the exams but I got a 99.6 in lab. Careful with his exams, he will ask the most detailed questions.
This class is difficult. BUT you MUST GO TO CLASS and be prepared! Hes a difficult professor but if you see him during his office hours and he knows that you are trying, he might help you. There are quizzes after every chapter and attendance is mandatory.
I honestly hated this class. I did fairly well on my quizzes, and exams, but I felt that a lot of the information on the tests were irrelevant to microbiology. On the other hand, Dr. Materon is a very nice guy, and he will help you out if he sees that you are trying. Its a give or take situation, but I'm just glad Im done with it!
His class is real intresting but his tests stink. He often contradicts himself and his test has things that were never mentioned in his class or his notes. He will not give you a question because a lot of people missed it and you can't argue about it with him. Also his questions are really confusing.
For those planning on Med School, just like real life you can't make mistakes. He is good in helping students achieve perfection and good work habits for study in the future.
This is a really difficult class and I'm not a want-an-easy-A student. I'm used to getting all A's in all of my classes (including science courses) and I worked really, really hard and I still got a C in this class. His exams/quizzes are INCREDIBLY detailed & specific. I feel like I learned so much and yet it's not reflected by my grade. It sucks!!
I got my first B in this course. This is also the first time I have ever really learned a subject. I recommend him if you want to learn but be prepared to sit down and study EVERY DAY! If you don't have the discipline to study every day and attend lecture every time then don't even bother registering. Watch out 4 multiple choice tests.Very specific
So far the ONLY upper level biology class I have learned so much. Great professor;very clear and informative. All you have to is study everyday, read the book do not leave it to the last minute. I got a B but it was well worth it. An A is highly possible. He is not as bad as people have told me. He is one of the best in the department.
super hard! Good luck
Dr. Materon is a very difficult teacher, His exams are not the ordinary..don't be confused that his multiple choice exams are easy b/c thy areNOT!!! Now i got a C but i can admit that a high B or even A is possible but you HAVE to STUDY!!! like a lot he is very specifc and does contradict himself!! listen to him but do read the book !!!
Dr.Materon is an arrogant man that contradicts his lectures. This course should be called "Materons Microbiology" due to his notes which by the way contradict the textbook. If you have the chance to drop dont listen to him when he tells you "stay stay ill help you.." HE WONT!!
After centuries of knowledge he knows Microbiology very well, but he lacks teaching skills. Disregard whatever the assigned book says as Materon goes after what 'He' says is right, not what is in the book. You'll get by Microbiology learning the subject on your own as this lecturer is down right useless. Good Luck.
I really wish I had enough space to say everything that is wrong with this class, but I don't. So I leave all of you checking to see how this professor was rated with this: He is the worst educator on campus. Lectures are useless and his tests are a complete joke. Take this class any where but at UTPA. You'll regret it if you don't.
This is a difficult class. Always go to class because he may give extra credit for exams. Study the textbook by annotating it and adding some of that information to the lecture notes. Remember that if he says something different from the text go with what he says. Can be a nice guy if you are respectful to him.
If you are taking his class three words: STUDY STUDY STUDY! The class is really hard but if you study and read the questions very carefully while you are taking the test you'll do good. The professor is trying to trick you with ambiguous wording but disregard that and just answer the best that you can and you will do good.
He can be a good professor if you are interested in the material and by studying his lectures an adding notes to them. This class was easier for me than gen. Micro. There is a 15 min power point presentation and a 30 page paper on the same topic but it is not bad because he tells you exactly what he wants and proofs it b4 you present. Can be arrogant on quizzes/test because he wants his answer not the updates even when proven by your research sources. A is possible. Be prepared to study!
I don't understand what these haters are talking about; I took the guy from gen. micro and med micro...and hope to take him for virology this coming fall. he's a very good professor, very courteous and fair. I think people are confusing the professor as being hard with the subject itself. you WANT to be on this guy's good side; he can get u places
You need to attend class EVERY DAY and take NOTES. His exams cover material from lecture. He corrects the book, so don't rely on that alone. His wording on exams can be ambiguous, so make sure to read the questions carefully. Take some time to speak to him. He's a very good person that loves teaching with methods that keep the students interested.
The best professor I have had at this university. I have learned microbiology. If you want an A then you have to study, Dr. Materon does not give easy grades you must make an effort to succeed in his class. He is a polite and he knows his subject well.
One of the best courses I have taken at this university. An excellent professor with a solid experience in research and teaching. Do not expect to get an A if you plan not to study for his course.
I was apprehensive about registering for this class, but I was proven wrong.Lab= awesome. His exams are open ended, but if u study u should be okay. You will definitely want to stick round for the final exam. The most important thing about taking Dr.Materon is that HE WILL help you out if he sees that you are making an effort. Highly recommend.
Excellent professor. The course material itself is not easy but Dr. Materon explains the material very well and if you still don't understand certain things about the material by all means GO ASK HIM! Also do your part as well. Study as much as you possibly can! I highly recommend Dr. Materon because I did learn alot in this course.
Really good professor, knows his stuff and really encourages discussion related to the material. There was no book needed because his notes are available online so you don't have to waste money. You will do well as long as you are paying attention.
I learned a lot of virology. He made the course very interesting. He uses excellent skills to teach difficult concepts. You need to study in order to lean and pass this high-level course.
I learned a lot the Virology course with Dr. Materon. He is excellent in teaching. He always tried to make connections with every day life to help us learn and remember the material. You do need to study but it is nothing difficult. Make sure to go to class this will help you and your class mates come throughout the course and come finals.
If you come to class and ask questions and get interested on the subject you will not have any problem in passing his course. He is a professional instructor who loves his subject and wants you to succeed in life.
Dr. Materon is a nice guy and a great professor. His class is not impossible to get an A in but it is not an easy A. Study hard, DON'T MEMORIZE!( final is cumulative).
All though this class was tough I really enjoyed it. Dr. Materon is a highly intelligent man and knows what he is talking about. I was very interested in knowing about the study of viruses and I actually learned. I am more self consciuos about washing my hands and using sanitizer. I am more aware of the flu virus and many others. Awesome class!
I have taken all of Dr. Materon's courses and received A's in all of them. He is not an easy professor but not extremely difficult either. You have to be willing to study and earn your A. Most bad ratings are from mediocre people which do not study or show up to class. If you respect him and do your job as a student he is an awesome professor.
Dr. Materon is an interesting lecturer and is good at relating current topics with the subject he is teaching. The class is not difficult as long as you study his notes and he will emphasize his points during lecture that will likely be on the test. Both Med Micro and virology were so much fun and I really enjoyed his teaching style.
Content of the material is easy but his test are wording difficult. He is extremely unhelpful when you go to his office and sometimes rude. He acts silly in class.
Good Professor....not easy but not hard. Read, Read, Read his book (book literally has his name lol)Lab is easy just follow along. Lecture tests are multiple choice but u need to study not only notes but book. Overall good professor.
First Summer Class for Gen. Micro is what I heard. Chapters covered thoroughly in class, all info he says in class and from book is on tests. Memorize concepts and content and a B is very possible. Splash vs Soak. Summer I vs Spring or Fall; whatever your memory permits, go with the easiest.
VIROLOGY/MOLECULAR VIROLOGY: I learned so much, Dr. Materon is an excellent teacher...he tries to help his students out as much as he can with bonus questions, and he curves the final grade too! I strongly recommend this class, easier than microbiology.
Gen. Micro. Great professor. Hard class, and words questions tricky. Everything he says will be on the test. Will also pull very detailed questions from the book. Has an open door policy andis always willing to answer any questions you may have. Quizzes can be hard so keep up with the material. Attendance is mandatory for a good grade.
Summer semester was not so bad, just make sure you study a bit every day! Lecture grade is based completely on exams, no quizzes in the summer. just make sure you write really good notes and you'll do alright. He can be specific, so write the little facts he mentions in class and memorize the tables in the book
Class was interesting. Book and taking notes in class are necessary. Studying days before the exams are is a must. Cramming one day before the exams is really bad. Too much information to try to cram. He says little details or facts in lecture so make sure to write them down. Also go see your exams in his office.
Class is hard if you don't attend class because he talks about things not on book that are on the exam. Read questions carefully because they are not straight forward. Do not try to cram 1 day before exam. Ask questions.
On exams there will be things that are talked about in class and not in the notes so attend class. Keeps very strict attendance record so make sure to attend or he threatens to drop you from the course. Questions on exams are not straight forward to prepare well. Cannot cram for exams. lab is easy but not lecture. not at all. he curves at the end.
A great and friendly professor. He is all about details and numbers, so make sure you know which bacteria, virus, and fungi is number 1, or numero uno. He takes attendance and appreciate efforts. Don’t sit in the back, and never come late to class. He removed quizzes last semester, but I think they were helpful. I highly recommend him.
I came into this class with great interest. His class id definitely difficult. His exams are not just from his notes, but from the book and what he says in class. You CAN NOT study the night before. Too much information to take in, in one night. His exams are worded differently but if you study really well, you do well in his class. Good Luck
An excellent instructor. He teaches with passion and want us to succeed. Few professors are like him at UTPA. I am very satisfied with what I learned.
Class is a very interesting course. He lectures very well. Exams are not difficult but are trickey so it is recommended that you show up to class. He wants you to pass the course and is helpful. Really nice guy and cares and his students.
This is a very interesting course but the test are very tricky. Must read questions carefully. Use book and notes to study.
Dr. Materon is an excellent professor. I showed great improvement throughout the course. Taking this course in the summer is a bit of a workload. You must read the textbook and it is very crucial not to miss class. If you have questions or concerns he is extremely helpful and only wants you to pass. I would highly recommend taking Dr. Materon.
Dr Materon is a great prof overall. I find his lectures entertaining and fascinating. His exams are fairly difficult, however. Do not believe him when he says to just understand concepts. He tends to bring up very specific/detailed questions from textbook. I have learned a LOT in his class and would recommend it to those willing to study.
Dr Materon is a great prof. His lectures are usually entertaining and always informative. Do not believe him when he says to mostly learn general concepts though. He will ask lots of specific Q's in exams. Great class for anyone who studies hard.
This class can be as easy as you want it to be. If you show up for lectures and read the textbook, an A is easily attainable. But, if you never show up and don't read the textbook then an F is what you deserve. Don't be afraid to ask questions or go to his office to check your exams. It's important to understand what questions you got wrong and why
Dr. Materon conducts intriguing class. He does not use power point or provide you with notes. All info is either written down by him or spoken. He does ask specific questions from his lecture. Making attendance crucial! to get a good grade you must stay be a tentative student.
This class is not that difficult. An A can be obtainable. You must read the chapters and specific examples on there. Make sure to know all the bacteria names as well as what they do. He makes his lectures entertaining and interesting. He also likes to help his students.
I am not going to lie, some of the material is difficult but if you have a good/solid Biology background then you should be fine.At first I was scared because of all the negative comments about Dr.Materon but once you get to know him u will find out that he is very helpful, gives good advise,& wants u to pass his class.STUDY,READ,LISTEN,GO TO CLASS!
Really wants you to pass, great professor, very passionate about the subject, MUST STUDY if you want to pass, getting an A Is definitely possible if you actually study!
Very good instructor, he knows the material very well and is very helpful in helping students memorize and learn concepts. You HAVE to attend class because his lectures are extremely important and he will have a bit of mercy for you if you have good attendance.
He is a fantastic instructor. Make sure you attend class and read. Even one missed day will effect your grade in the end. While I completely absorb his lectures and study his notes, los of information is from book. The lab grade helps a lot.
Microbiology is a very interesting subject. Dr. Materon is extremely helpful and is always available for any questions or concerns. I would highly recommend this professor to a friend.
Dr. Materon knows his subject well. He is enthusiastic as a teacher and seems to be genuinely concerned when people do not attend his class. He gives students every reasonable chance to make the grade. A low grade in this class is only due to lack of effort.
I definitely recommend this course. This class is not easy. You will come out having gained so much knowledge in the subject . Dr Materon knows his material and will teach you well. Read the book and GO TO CLASS. Good luck.
This is not an easy course. Go to class and read the book! Overall a great interesting course. You wont regret taking it!
I definitely recommend this course. When you finish Micro you will have gained so much knowledge in the subject. GO TO CLASS AND READ THE BOOK! Professor Materon knows his subject well and will teach you right!
Dr. Materon is an amazing professor his class is not easy but it can be done. You have to study! And attend class especially in a summer course. Dr. Matron has a great attitude and is very approachable his class lecture have a good balance he make you laugh every now and then to keep your attention. I recommend his class. I personally loved it.
Awesome class but you have to study a lot and read a lot! He is very knowledgable and is very enthusiastic when lecturing I really enjoyed his class. I recommend it.
Great Professor tries to help you out as much as he can attendance is a must and always make sure to read your book since many of the material that are in his exams are not only on what he goes over in class. This is not an easy course you must study hard!!
Dr. Materon is a great professor he explains everything in detail but one thing that he is strict about is attendance you must go in order to learn read your book everyday if you want to pass
Dr. Materon knows his stuff when it comes to microbiology hes is a very well traveled man and can help you learn and love microbiology please read everyday is you want to pass because many of the exam materials are in the book but over all great professor
Lots of reading so it's easy to get left behind and a lot of microorganisms to remember but overall a good class. He doesn't use PowerPoints but adds a lot of humor to make it easier to understand. He does a good job trying to make it interesting.
Very good professor. He explains all the material very well and adds a little humor to make it simpler to understand the concepts. Know all the bacteria he discusses in class. Be sure to read every chapter. The exams can be tricky, but they are very do-able if you study.
Dr.Materon is very passionate about his work. He's very prompt about responding to his emails. His test are a bit difficult/tricky, but as long as you read and study everyday you should be okay. Overall, I enjoyed this class.
Very good professor. Enjoys teaching and makes learning easier. Nonetheless, his tests are difficult and are based on both the book and his lectures. Keep up with the readings or you will suffer.
Dr.Materon is very passionate about his work. He's very prompt about responding to his emails. His test are a bit difficult/tricky, but as long as you read and study everyday you should be okay. Overall, I enjoyed this class. Attendance is mandatory, so don't skip class! BUY THE BOOK!
Dr. Materon is a really good professor. His tests are tricky because he can twist the questions or answers to confuse you, but as long as you study and read everything you should be fine. He sometimes asks material not covered in class so reading the chapters in the book is mandatory to get a good grade. Also go check your exams and ask questions!
Dr. Materon's class is challenging, his tests have some tricky questions were you really need to think about what is being asked. I think he is a great professor, he is very intelligent, and is helpful to students, however this is not an easy A and you really need to go the extra mile while studying.
Dr. Materon is a good professor, and very passionate about his work. Although the class has a high level of difficulty, if you read the book, go to class, and study with time in advance, you'll do fine (DO NOT CRAM). One of the best professors I've had at PanAm.
Dr. Materon is a really good professor. His tests are tricky because he can twist the questions or answers to confuse you, but as long as you study and read everything you should be fine. He sometimes asks material not covered in class so reading the chapters in the book is mandatory to get a good grade. Also go check your exams and ask questions
Great professor, difficult class. Buy the book, attendance mandatory, do not cram for this course.
Taking 3401 as summer course; with that said, there is much material to cover in a short amount of time. You can get behind easily if you don't study on a daily basis. Attendance is crucial if you want to do well. The majority of the test questions are lecture related. Dr. Materon encourages student involvement and keeps the lectures interesting.
Dr. Materon is a great professor. His exams can be tricky because he sometimes twists the question or answer to make it a bit confusing. If you take good notes and study everything in the book you should do really well. Material not covered in class can be on the exam so reading is necessary for a good grade. Go check your exams and ask questions.
Dr. Materon was a great professor that lectured to the class instead of placing boring power point slides. Material in class was a bit challenging in the summer but it was helpful in keeping the material fresh. Attending class and taking notes is a must to really understand the material. He was very helpful during his office hours. Great class!!!
This Was An Awsome Class I Learned A Lot With This. IF You Guys Want To Pass you Guys need To Understand That Slacking Off, Not Studying, Not Reading, And NotgGoing To Class Will Take You Straight To An F.
Great subject and even better professor! Dr. Materon is always making connections to daily life and that is fantastic! Take this class and it will change the way you see things.
Awesome class, not easy during summer but if you study, attend lecture and read the book, you will do great.
There is a lot of material to be covered for a summer but it is such interesting stuff!!! Dr. Materon is a very good professor and really wants his students to succeed. Going to class and reading the book is a must, but doing this will help you get a good grade.
Great class. The material is really interesting and so are his lectures. The exams can be a bit tricky, but if you read and go to class then it shouldn't be an issue.
Dr. Materon is a great professor and is very helpful and truly wants his students to do well. He is there to help and answer any and all question.
One of the best professors at UTPA. Dr. Materon knows what he is talking about, so his lectures are consistently fluid and engaging. His passion for the subject is contagious.
Great professor, Studying is a must for this class. It is not easy material. If chapters are read and the concept understood, you will do excellent in the class. He is also very helpful when it comes to trying to understand the material.
Great professor, Studying is a must to understand the material. Is not an easy course but he is very helpful and will make sure you understand the concept before moving on. Like that his students ask questions. Think its easier to take in the summer and exams are not hard if you read the chapters and understood his lectures.
Dr. Materon is a good professor, and his class is very interesting, so you will learn a lot! This class is not as hard as people say, I'm taking the class during summer and apparently its easier like this. Fun professor and a nice person, I recommend him!
Materon is a great professor, he wants his students to learn from his course. He gives you all the material you need in his lectures, but if you read the book also it may benefit you. Take the class seriously and study hard. this class will be very interesting to you if you love Science.
Great class and professor, this course and instructor are one of the best at UTPA. You have to study and attend class but you will do fine if you study and read the book.
Materon is very helpful and a really nice guy. This class is very interesting, alot of information to remember. It is best if you study his notes everyday after class. His tests will challenge you, but if you study and understand you will do just fine. It is best to attend class everyday and go to his office to look at exam grades.
Very interesting class especially if you are interested in the medical field . Not an easy class but what do you expect from an upper level science course. You have to read and study. Professor is great he loves the subject and does his best to help.
Dr. Materon is the best professor I've ever had at UTPA. His class is the toughest class I've taken so far.. Exams are tough you have to study days in advance. Attend lecture, take good notes, and read the chapters..
Dr. Materon is the best professor I've ever had at UTPA. He knows his subject very well. His exams are tough so you HAVE TO STUDY. Study days in advance, don't cram! Attend class, take good notes, read book!
Materon is tough. Interesting class but YOU HAVE TO STUDY days in advance to pass.
Exams are difficult but doable if you study enough. Must attend every class and take good notes. Reading the textbook is a must. He is helpful if you ask for clarification on the subject.
The course material itself is very difficult. The exams are a bit tricky you need to make sure you read the whole question and carefully.Oh and don't second guess yourself because this was what killed me. Materon is very good in explaining the concept of the chapters. Oh,and attendance is critical and so is reading the book if you even want to pass.
Dr. Materon is a good professor but you have to sit up close to be able to listen to him clearly. You MUST read the textbook and pay attention in class if you want to do well.
Make sure you study every day for his class! Not an easy A but can be achieved with hard work. The class itself is very interesting and fun.
Well educated professor, definitely shows genuine interest in the groundings of microbiology. The course does not demand an exceeding amount of deep understanding however the tests are designed in a manner where you have to memorize a lot of information due to it's tricky and highly specific nature.
Great professor! You definitely need to study daily, especially in the summer. No homework assignments, just tests. Tests q's are a bit tricky, important to understand the concepts. He will work with you if you show initiative.
This class is very interesting, however it is not an easy A. After all, it is an advanced science course. Read the textbook, attend class, and take detailed notes.
Profesor Materon is one of the greatest instructors I've had at the university level. He is extremely enthusiastic about the microbial world. He gives good day to day basis of applications in Microbiology. Study days in advance as his test are very tricky. Read the text book, attend lecture and take detailed notes. Overall great instructor.
Great professor. Take great notes, attend lecture, and read book. Don't over think on exams as his questions are wordy and tricky. Read question carefully and then answer it.
Overall it is a pretty interesting course. However, the material that you will cover is not easy, don't expect an easy A. Must take good notes and read over the text book carefully. He is a great professor and makes for a great learning experience. Attendance is important!
Very interesting course! However the material covered is a bit difficult. The tests are pretty detailed and questions are sometimes tricky. Be sure to attend class and take good notes. STUDY!! reading the text book will help a lot. He is a very good professor though and will try his best to help you understand
Great professor! Lectures at a good pace and is available for help whenever needed. Really great at understanding circumstances if any come up
Great professor. Difficult course. If you want an A, you gotta earn it by reading and studying ahead of time.
He requires that you read the chapters. He uses details from the book in his exams that he doesn't discuss in lecture and vice versa. You should take notes in class lecture and notes from what you read. Do the chapter review questions at the end of each chapter. You are required to memorize names of microbes and details about them. Good professor.
You need to read and go to class, if you do not you will do poorly on the tests
If Materon was a professor at Hogwarts he would be like a professor of divination because there is a set thing but his explanations range from very general and his test questions are very specific. Studying everyday is definitely required. Super glad I am passing!
I have taken all of Dr. Materon's classes (General Microbiology, Medical Microbiology and Virology). Do not expect him to give you extra points or pass you just because you visit him in his office. He expects professionalism and honest effort. Study hard and attend lectures because he discusses details during class that are not in the booknotes.
Materon is one of the WORST Biology teacher I've ever had. He is arrogant and vain. I once went into his office to clarify some of my notes, he refused and said i should ask those questions in class. This teacher is intimidating and not helpful, unless your a women. which then he Oh sO available.
Excellent and knowledgeable professor. He's extremely fair and expects you to do your part to get your grade which includes attending class, taking good notes, and READING CHAPTERS ! You definitely earn what you work for in his class. He does not curve or drop any exams, so take it serious from the beginning.
Dr. Materon is a very knowledgeable man! He knows exactly what he is talking about in all of his lectures and it's very obvious he loves what he teaches. Any students that complain about him are simply lazy and don't try hard enough. If you don't study and spend time on his class, then Dr. Materon will not spend time on you. Attend his lectures!
I really enjoyed his style of teaching and motivation. He never skipped a class, he was punctual, polite with students, and fair. He really loves microbiology and relates what he teaches to real life scenarios. He is strict and does not like students arriving late and encourages us not to miss classes. He's one of the best professors I have had.
I was always worried about taking a class with Dr. Materon, but I definitely recommend it and do not regret it. He is so knowledgeable and is very passionate about medical microbiology. Tips: Do not skip class, study your notes and jot down what he says during class. I got an A in his class and really enjoyed him as a professor.
Dr. Materon is an amazing teacher who cares about his students and their grades. His tests are worded a little different making the tests tough but he goes over everything in class so its important to take very good notes and to read the book and the lecture notes he posts on his website. He is always there for any help that you need.
Dr. Materon is a strict teacher. Hello, its college! He adds humor to his lectures which is good because its a lot of information you need to learn. The book helps, but going to lecture and taking good notes is KEY to passing! He is very helpful when needed. DONT be afraid to ask. He will help no matter what! Great human being! Take his class!
Attendance is mandatory because the professor provides material as specific and interesting in class that the textbook itself will not be enough to study with. This is an upper elective so of course the course is difficult but Dr Materon's office is always open for any and all students that feel lost or have any questions.
Dr Materon is a great professor but you must but in your time into the class. He expects a lot from you but his work load is nothing impossible. Attend his lectures and read over them everyday.
Dr. Materon is byfar the most superb professor I have met. He always takes the time to explain the material throughly in class! He answers all the questions you may have, and is always available in his office for additional questions. His class is time consuming but it is worth it in the long run. Highly recommended! :)
Dr. Materon is one of the best professors at this institution. He is excellent at explaining the course material. He makes microbiology very fun. If for whatever reason you did not clearly understand he is available to answer all questions. Whoever says otherwise never put in the time and effort into his class. Highly recommend his micro course.
Materon is a great teacher, but his class is very difficult. There are 3 tests and a final. The tests involve a lot of reading from the book, in class notes, and notes that you print out. There is a lot of material, so the class will be difficult to get an A. Don't cram
Dr. Materon is such an amazing professor. He really cares about his students. It is important to not be afraid to go talk to him. His lectures are clear and fun. Highly recommend to any Biology major or minor. You will not regret talking his courses! I have learned so much as a Biologist
This professor wants his students to pass, but gives very specific exams. If you miss class more than 3 times, expect to get points deducted. The tests are based on the lectures. This is a tough class if you don't study everyday. Definitely not an easy A.
Dr. Materon knows a lot and is very knowledgeable but you need to have a strong foundation of general Biology of you will not pass. You MUST study everyday for hours. You need to know all material front and back. Excellent opportunity to know if you are cut out for Med school. Honestly this is the hardest class I have ever taken.
He's a great prof and he really knows a lot, but he often expects you to also. You must have a solid foundation of basic biology because all he does is build on what you should already know. Also, you MUST study everyday. Take note of what comes out of his mouth rather that what is in the book, but having the book is nice for cross-referencing.
This is a tough class if you don't study everyday. Definitely not an easy A. lot of information and very specific exams. not easy.
I would recommend this professor. He will help you get through the class and is willing to provide feedback on how to study. You should not take this class too lightly. Always pay attention and write notes on what he emphasizes. Don't be late.
NOT EASY A! But you learn, he loves his job and teaching. Write everything he says, print the notes, and read the book. Study every day or you won't pass, or at least 1 week before the test. He's willing to help his students, he just want us to really learn. Amazing professor, he knows what he is teaching.
If you don't give a positive evaluation right before it's due, he will not knock off half the chapters on his final. Lots of exams with answer keys were passed around, so those who say they passed or got A's cheated. Apparently, it's been happening for years. The questions are worded vague on exam, be prepared to fail.
Awful professor. Openly belittles those who ask for help. He does NOT care about you or helping you at all. Exams are all very vague and he is never clear on what exactly you need to know and he will not answer questions during exams. Don't believe these other positive reviews, they seem fake.
Microbiology is not easy. Dr. Materon makes the class very interesting and he honestly loves his job. He is willing to help, his door is always open. Write down EVERYTHING he says in class and read the book. Do not take Materon if you want an easy A. Take him if you want to learn and grow.
Dr. Materon is an excellent professor who knows how to teach and inspire students. Most of the students in this course enjoy the course and most want to get a good preparation to medical school. This is a key course to get. His exams are open-ended and fair. I got an A and I recommend this course to those who want to learn virology.
Dr. Materon is a GREAT professor. This is one of the best classes Ive ever taken. It is not easy at all. You have to read every day and write down everything he says. It is best to record him. You do learn a lot.
I took Dr. Materon for Microbiology and I enjoyed his lectures. He makes it interesting , as long as you show up to the lectures and take notes you should get an easy A .
As long as you are willing to show up to class and do the work, you should do well in this class. The professor gives you all the information you need and makes the class fun. You will enjoy the class and learn at the same time, because I did.
Dr. Materon is passionate about the material that he teaches. The notes that he provides allow the students to follow his lectures easily in class. He is always available in his office and wants to make sure that you understand the material. The info that he teaches you will definitely prep you for the real world. Overall, an excellent professor!
Take this course if you value your education. Materon has a passion for the subjects he teaches, and encourages students to try to find the same value in the material. You should not take this class if you want to slack off. Make an effort to study regularly if not daily and you will do well in this class. Focus on learning over a grade.
Honestly the best professor I've ever had. He's so passionate about his field and is so knowledgeable. It's easy to admire him as a person and all of his academic achievements. He also cares about the students, he has office hours every single day and will answer all your questions during lecture. He hates slackers though so be prepared.
Dr. Materon is a great professor. The only thing about microbiology is that it requires a ton of effort. Don't go in expecting an easy A. I learned a lot! He puts in a lot of effort trying to help us learn by providing a website with lectures. Read the book and if you go to class every day and to his office occasionally, he will help you.
Overall bad experience. Encourages questions, but does not answer them well. Not helpful at all unless you are a pretty young female. Exams are horribly phrased and answer choices are practically the same for many of the questions. You can't ask the professor about the meaning of questions during the exam because he says it is "phrased correctly".
Not helpful whatsoever. One of the worst bio professors I have ever had. The material is not explained well enough to the point to take an exam on it. If I could give him a zero on this site I would. 4 exams are the only grades.
His grades consist of 4 exams which are extremely difficult no matter how hard I studied! His lectures and notes are very vague not enough to test on. His questions are tricky too. I would not recommend taking him unless youre an expert in micro. Not very helpful. Instead of helping he just points out your flaws in the subject.
He is very knowledgable and you will learn a lot. The only things I did not like is that he would often get mad at the students for under-performing. His exams were most of the time the most specific little facts he would say in lecture or from the book. Probably the most difficult exams I have taken. He did give a lot of curves , so Im thankful.
Although he is very passionate on what he does, he is very old school. In order to get an A in his course you have to attend every class and study AT LEAST 30+ hours a week. The only grades are 4 test grades, so mess up one test and your grade will suffer immensely (I learned that the hard way). He is also a passionate bird photographer.
I was tricked by these reviews! He's not even in the country and no one knew that until we all showed up to class waiting for 20 minutes to find out that its ONLINE! Then, his "lecture notes" are so vague it's nothing like his hard exams. You have to read the textbook, like it's your favorite book. I wish I was kidding but he didn't teach or help.
I took him this past summer 2 and it was ridiculous. Given that we are in a pandemic and are forced to take this online, this professor was horrid. I was aware of the bad ratings, though I did not expect it to be this bad. He only gives 4 exams for his course. That's it. Mess up one and you have to work 10x harder on the others. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
Professor Materon is very knowledgeable in his field and truly loves his content. Even though the class was asynchronous he did have zoom meetings which I highly recommend attending. His tests were open ended so you need to read and watch his lectures. He can be unclear at times but he is very understanding so don't be afraid to talk to him.
worst professor i've ever take will do no extensions on anything, most of the student in his class dont know whats going on because he can't teach, can't use technology and expect student to accommodate to his lack of knowledge instead of learning, will accuse you of copying if you dare use "big words" because he just knows u did apparently.
Dr. Materon is not an easy professor. He can be hard to understand sometimes but is passionate about his subject. I feel like you can't help but learn something in this class (Microbiology). You need to read the book to do alright on his exams though.
Class was very difficult and had to study about 6 hr/day. His exams consist of real life application so if you dont master the concept you have a slim chance of passing. He messed up on grading my exams twice and accused me of not turning it in when I did and had proof. He is very knowledgeable on the subject though and I guarantee you will learn.
Pay very close attention to his lectures and go over the figures he wants you to review, it will all help for the exam, and if he provides the notes for each lecture review them do not just read them, write them down highlight underline etc, his zoom meetings are just him reinforcing what he mentioned in the videos and notes. you will learn a lot
Professor Matron can seem intimidating but he genuinely wants his students to learn. His lecture notes are VERY helpful. Watch his videos. Show up to class. Read. Make an effort and you'll pass his class. Any questions and he has no problem calling you and chatting about your concerns. It's not an easy class, but you will learn if you TRY.
Dr. Materon will teach you a lot if you study. His class was asynchronous but he had extra meetings. If you come and participate and ask questions he will help you. For virology he posts his notes and videos on Blackboard, and they are the important resources to study.
Would not recommend this teacher he does not care about you or your grade. Showed up only the first week of school for an in person lecture class and after never taught again. He refused to at least have the curtesy to give a review half of his class dropped the course to the circumstances that students were basically set up to fail
Don't recommend him. He did not give lectures after the first week of school due to medical purposes, but didn't make a good effort to make sure students understood recorded lectures. Tough grader and very specific on exams, lectures do not really prepare you for the exams. Not a difficult course, but his teaching made it difficult to learn.
very challenging. it does not matter if you know a generalized answer to a certain concept. His questions on his exams are very detailed about the concepts. If you think you know everything about the chapters, you are wrong; he will hit you with a VERY detailed question. He will say the quizzes will help pass exams but they don't.
Do NOT take him for microbiology! Horrible professor. Extremely detailed quizzes after every chapter. Lecture will include basic generalized concepts, while exams consist of specific facts never mentioned or discussed. Lecture does not match up with provided notes, powerpoints, or textbook. Calls students LAZY for not understanding material.
Do not recommend him at all. He talks about very broad topics and then asks very specific and detailed questions on quizzes, basically setting you up to fail. He will also embarrass you in front of the class for asking a question. After he finishes a chapter he gives you a quiz, and he goes through a whole chapter in a day.
Took his class Fall 2022 and had to drop after 2 months to avoid getting a failing grade. Professor only showed up the first weeks to let us know he'd be going away due to medical issues, made the class from in-person to online but still expected us to show up for in-person tests. Tests were tough and lab involved a lot of homework.
He was terrible he put out powerpoint and supplementals but when it came to the test/quizes it was completely based on in class lectures. So if you were to miss a day you would not know what was said and if you studied and applied the supplemental the "wording" was wrong so the answer was wrong. He would also miss class and not send out an email
I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt because he was thrown into this class, but as lectures went on, his teaching didn't improve. He's very soft-spoken, and his quizzes are very difficult to complete even if you attend his classes. His tests and quizzes do not match what he teaches. Get ready to teach yourself because you won't learn.
No homework or assignments, just quizzes and test. Quizzes are open ended roughly 5-10 Question. Quizzes are after each chapter. Tests are 50 Questions. He doesn't use the PowerPoints he just teaches by talking. Hard to understand sometimes but if you study on your own and go to his lectures you will be okay.
No assignments just tests (50 questions)and quizzes (5-10). He ended up dropping 2 quizzes because grades were so low. Questions are LECTURE HEAVY. He claimed anything he SAID was fair game on the quizzes/tests. Pretty easy if you are able to pay attention to his lecturing. Only take if you plan to attend lecture and take good notes.
I personally really connected with Professor Materons style of teaching. Although there is a textbook, you really dont need it. Professor Materon provides everything needed for the quizzes and tests in his lectures. The quizzes are pretty simple as long as you take notes and review the information provided.
Professor Materon's class requires active engagement - his lectures are key, and the textbook is mostly unnecessary. Use tools like Unstuck AI alongside taking good notes to excel. Quizzes are tricky, but if you put in the work, you can do well.
Very test heavy, no curved exams, no extra credit to bring up grades except showing more effort in studying maybe, and you'll never exactly know if the test is on lecture, book, or PowerPoint. Sometimes all three or two at a time.
So he only had 5 grades for the entire semester, I wasn't ready for that, he also never uses the slides and he seems very educated but idk his teaching wasn't working for me. He would try to draw biology and he also has a accent and mumbles, its hard to understand him. Wonderful man but I would never take a class from him again, like ever ever.
I think this class should not have been as hard as it was. I studied the powerpoints and textbook and never got the results I wanted. On exam 3 I decided to just rely on prior knowledge and got the same grade as when I would study. It's the professor not the course that is difficult.
All he did was complain about how his students are not doing well in the class. He asked us what he could do so that we could improve but refused to take any of the suggestions. This man needs to retire and focus on his bird photography.
This class should not have been as hard as it was. There were only 4 grades in the course, which makes it very hard to not mess up. Tests are 50 questions and you don't even know what is going to be on them. I learned the hard way and noticed that his tests were all about what comes out of his mouth, so better pay attention to that.
I'm not sure why he has a rating of 3.7 when it should be at least a 2 and that is being generous. He promised he would get rid of the comprehensive exam but for some reason he didn't keep his promise. The exams are based on his lecture, book, notes, and videos and he complains when you can't memorize all that info. Do not take him just don't.
Materon generally is just tired of the generation of students that came after COVID-19. If you have no life and are just a student for a living then take him. His exams are 50 questions, grade book consists of: 4 exams&1 final, nothing else. Study his lecture notes, PowerPoints, text book, and write everything he says in class. YOU CANT FALL BEHIND
Attedance was not mandatory but would get upset if not many students would attend. His exams are all from his notes and extra info about in lecture, this could be from actual information to fun facts. Lied about his final being 4 chapters and turned out to be 5 plus a separate chart. A lot of time/patience was put into his class, do not reccomend.
Luis was very lecture heavy, so most of the things he said in the lectures in the quizzes. He's very passionate about biology but the way he had things structured wasn't for me. Be ready to study a lot.
He shouldn't be teaching at all. Extremely rude and mean towards students. He shouldn't be teaching at all. A professor should support learning, not make students dread class. He gets upset for asking simple questions
He is very passionate about his work and during his office hours he really tries to make you understand the material you are having trouble with. The exams were easy if you really study, and the quizzes were 100% related to his lectures. He drops 1 exam and 2 quizzes.
I loved professor materon, a lot of people dont like him because hes not the one to just give you an easy A, but when you actually get to know him, hes the sweetest most caring professor, if you ask for help, he will help you. He loves what he does and you can tell that he has a passion for teaching and biology!!!
