the best math teacher ive ever had. enthusiastic, not monotonous or dull like most math teachers. really a funny guy. very intelligent and explains everything to an extent. if you do not understand something, however, office hours are helpful
Makes Math fun... he's so awesome and intelligent at the same time! Trust me, you want Franco.
Good guy with a better personality. Course he teaches is fairly tough. Great to have. Office hours are very helpful
Office hours are really helpful.
Extremely fun class... he'll get you to laugh every day. A lot of homework, although he doesn't really check to see if you did it all. Tests: you either know it or you don't (6 questions). Offers extra credit and help outside class.
Once you get past his accent he has a friendly demenor and can get even the most novice mathematician through precalculus
He is a great teacher and very helpful. I definietly recommend him, and take advantage of his office hours, they are there for a reason.
come on... franco of all people needs a chile pepper! :o)
A really funny guy and a great teacher! He is definately one of the best math teachers I have ever had.

The best math prof. I have had. I got an A in this class because he took the time almost every day after class to help me go through problems.
This Professor is absolutely amazing. I have never understood math so thoroughly before in my entire life. He really takes the time in class to go over the material, and is completely aproachable, in and out of class.
Nice & Funny guy but a horrible teacher. He appears to be helpful but hes only willing to help outside of class. If you have the time to spare take him. His theoretical style of teaching is impossible to decipher during class. Please Email for a detailed experience [email protected]
Ortiz-Franco is a nice guy but he is a horrible teacher. He breezes through a section in 5-10 mins and assumes that what he went over is enough to do the homework. Test are only 6 questions. He is not very helpful in class but is during his office hours. Take him if there is no one else.
Ortiz is hilarious! This guy's voice goes up and down every time he speaks. Most "fun" I've ever had taking math. Material can be pretty difficult, but he's always willing to help during office hours. Reading the book's examples is good to do. If you're pretty good with math, you should be fine...
He lets you use your calculator. His work load was pretty easy and his tests were on the easy side as well. his tests only had about five questions each and he gave a ton of partial credit. the only time he helps you is when you go to his office hours.
Going to his class is a waste. His lectures make no sense! If you're great in math, you'll be set. If you suck he'll only help you out during office hours. If you have a question about HW during class he won't answer it unless you come in during his office hours. Take if YOU HAVE THE TIME.
This is by far the worst math instructor I've ever had.. he's so funny too.. but as far as instructing goes... dreadful.. doesn't teach, doesn't go over homework and he won't help you unless you see him on the side!
One of the most entertaining teachers I have ever had. Take his class. He is crazy in the best way, and just an all around swell guy. The first day of class he told us about how we should be carful about trusting sombody who tells us they love us intinatly, since it can be a small number... this guys rocks
Not a teacher for someone who's just looking to get through GE's and never look back at math again in their life. He's kinda entertaining but so not worth the hassle. He's the type of teacher who loves math and teaches it as if you pretty much already understand it and enjoy it as much as he does. Tests are pretty small, 5-6 questions on each.
Terrible teacher. His tests are impossibly hard, and his instructing rarely coincides with his assigments. I had to drop the class due to risk of failure.
Difficult class. His 6 question tests are difficult, and are weighted heavily. Final exam had 10 questions...
Did not care about the success of his students. Was often not available for office hours. Was difficult to understand and very sarcastic. Started new chapters before the test so your mind was starting something totally new. Absolutely worst Math teacher I have ever had. AVoid at all costs.
He is extremely helpful! He wants you to do well. He also wants to get to know you and will take you out to lunch with the class. He teaches you the reasons for solving equations and you actually learn. Great teacher!
very polite teacher, and very easy. he offers alot of extra credit assighnments. He tells you what to study for the exmas. Great teacher if you want to pass.
What a great guy. Funny and kind personality. Always there to help. Tells alot of stories during class. Can sometimes confuse you but you can always ask questions to get back on track. Lots of extra credit to really boost your grade in class. Last tests and final were open book which can really help you get an A on the tests and in the class
worst math teacher ever! Class is a joke. He teaches you like third graders. No make up tests even if you are in the hospital or in another state on an urgent trip. Fails to explain things at a college level. thinks math is more important than life. If you try to talk to him in person he will loose his temper and practically pick a fight with you.
worst teacher ever! avoid at all costs!
i took this class pass/no pass. i went maybe once every two weeks, when i did go a fell asleep. classes are pointless, just know the material. test problems are usually examples in the book, just different numbers. i wouldnt say its easy to get an A, but it is definitely easy to pass. offers a lot of extra credit and some tests are open book.
Not a very interesting class. Professor can be funny (he's a cheerful guy) but his lectures are dry. Going to class is optional but studying for tests is not. Majority of grade based on test, can be an easy A if you study and teach yourself the material.
The first math teacher that has ever made me want to go to class. Funny anecdotes make the subject bearable
He is one that given me the motivation to study calculus. Lecture is fun and clear to understand. He was also very helpful outside class giving me advice which way to go in future.
For someone who completely hates math, this teacher made is almost fun. He's funny, sweet, understanding, and all you have to do is ask and he'll slow down or go over something again. Also tapes hot peppers to your test when you get good grades, which is just hilarious. Awesome teacher.
Pre-Calculus was easy with Ortiz. Do homework to understand the material, and tests are based on odd numbered questions in book. Ortiz tells students what to study and what sections will appear on a test. Follow along in class or get a tutor. I am bad at math and i did fine.
Tries to keep the class entertained and has some funny stories. Goes kind of fast, but willing to slow down if you ask.
worst teacher I have ever had! Shows no interest in your success and could care less about how his students perform! Doesn't care if you come to class. He just bases your grade on your tests but never goes over anything. "Explains" things but doesnt follow the book...yet, the questions for the test come from there! AWFUL AWFUL CLASS!
He dosent care about you if you have no interest in math. He'll fail you and not even tell you how to avoid it even when you ask for help.
AWFUL... AWFUL.... AWFUL.... AND I EVEN GOT A GOOD GRADE BUT STILL WORST TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD!
The problem I had with him was that math is all about numbers, and his notes are all written in words. He explains how to do problems by writing them out in english, instead of going step by step in numbers. If you're good at math, don't take his class, you'll be very frustrated.
Hilarious. Helps you when you need it. Overall I really liked it.
Tries to make math fun but is generally unsuccessful. I decided that going to the class was not worth my time and when I stopped attending and taught myself, I got my highest grades on the tests. His teaching is not particularly helpful, and many people had trouble with the class. If you are not interested in math, do not take him.
I'm physically incapable of concentrating in a math class, and I've made my peace with that. Although I can't judge his teaching, this class had everything else I could want. He is a great guy, funny, patient, offers extra credit, partial credit, large curves, etc. He makes you need to know the material but wont crush your grade if you have trouble
I know it's difficult to make a math class fun, but Ortiz-Franco really does try. He'll bring chocolate to class and kind of acts like a cartoon character. He's a really nice guy. That being said, he still isn't a great teacher. Be prepared to teach yourself the material.
TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TEACHER!! Only take this class if you want to teach yourself.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER! He doesn't care about you as a person and his tests are unfair. There are only 5 questions on the test worth 20 points each and he has no problem failing you.
SI Sessions and Tutoring will save your life. He can be very difficult to understand because he talks so fast in class and lectures for the entire time without giving students an opportunity to practice, but his tests are pretty easy and very fair. If you get the review problems in tutoring, you will pass the tests!
Pretty easy grader, his test are only 5-6 problems, but he will never give you a 0 on a problem if not left blank. He is a very sweet guy, funny and tries to be involved with his students. Gives extra credit and loves soccer. Overall my favorite teacher. FINAL IS OPEN BOOK!!!! :)
Very hard class, very important to get a tutor/ go to SI sessions. Extremely hard tests if you are bad at math. He moves really really fast but overall he is a great teacher. 4 tests and a final. If you are bad at math, good luck with him.
If you really want to pass the class, all you need to do is attend it and take notes. The people who tend to to poorly in his class are the ones that never showed up. His tests are 5 to 6 questions, they aren't hard if you study beforehand. Honestly one of the best math teachers i've ever had.
Such an easy class if you just attend it and take notes.
I had Dr. Franco ad he was great!! He had a good sense of humor. He appreciated it when I asked him if he was going to take us to infinity and beyond. This was after he had lectured about positive ad negative infinity. The class was collee algebra at Cypress College.
Easy grader, nice, helpful if you go to his office hours. He's hard to understand sometimes and goes off on tangents but his class is pretty easy. A few tests, OPEN BOOK FINAL, and all homework is graded on whether you did it or not, doesn't matter if you miss any problems.
I seriously regret taking his class.I am about to fail this class after having 2 hours a week with a tutor, doing all the hw, attending class, and studying for every test. 60% of the final grade is made up of 4 tests with an average of 5 questions each.Tests are on 5-8 sections in the text.Unless math is extremely easy for you, DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS
I loved him, he is funny and makes math as interesting and fun as it gets. If you take the time to pay attention in class you will do fine. If you are having trouble you can always go to a SI session or ask him to explain the problem in class. Honestly if you go to class you'll be fine. If you aren't good at math just pay attention and ask question
Class was super easy. His accent gets in the way sometimes, but overall he is very clear and explains the topics very well. Spend 15 minutes reviewing before an exam and you'll do fine. Really funny guy and very nice (offers chai and cookies at office hours). If you have to take a math course, take Ortiz.
He will go over each topic pretty thoroughly and if you pay attention and ask questions the class should be an easy A. Short tests but fairly simple. He's very friendly and seems genuinely nice.
DON'T TAKE HIM! He is impossible to understand. He doesn't explain things he just writes the all the formulas on the board and writes them in full paragraphs like english class, making it very difficult to understand. The subject topic is easy he is just a horrible teacher. He only has 4 tests overall, so if you don't do well on one you're screwed.
Don't take this professor! It is almost impossible to understand what he is saying, he mumbles the whole time and constantly gets off topic. Since this was a lower level class, he thinks it's easy so doesn't understand when students don't get it and won't answer questions in class. I dropped it 1st sem., he is very out of touch with his students.
Writes explanations in paragraphs, doesn't do many examples in class. Tests have 5-8 problems, though he does give partial credit. Funny personality, encourages questions and to come to his office hours.
Took him for precal, it's so easy to get an A if you do all of the homework and read on your own. He lets you have a full cheat sheet for the exams and final.
I HATE MATH, but I LOVE this teacher. Yes, I had to put in extra work. I went to his office hours biweekly, but when I did he was SO helpful. He gave me chai tea and ginger snaps and spent hours helping me. One of my favorite teachers ever, definitely recommend him if you have to take a math class. Just don't be a stranger to his office hours!
He has a funny personality and genuinely cares about people succeeding. He always go through multiple examples if you ask him to and is VERY straightforward about what is on the test. I had already taken Pre-Cal and am doing well in the class. Definitely do your homework though. It helps!
Do not take this class. End of discussion. The homework is not closely related to the tests, which are not explained well and extremely difficult. He gets angry at you if you ask for help on homework questions and refuses to help in class, even if class ends early. His only decency is that he gives partial credit on test questions. Steer clear.
He is such a sweet man and cares about his students! He will help you if you ask for it and is very straightforward regarding tests. Go to the SI sessions and do the homework if you want to succeed in the class.
He gives A LOT of partial credit on tests even if your work is nonsense... So you could receive A's even if you don't deserve them. Do the homework, it's worth a lot of points. 4 tests and one final (final is open book). Tests are usually 5-7 questions long. The final is 10 questions. Nice guy, + you don't need to attend class. Helps if you ask.
Just a terrible teacher.. Math is hard enough without having to deal with a teacher as useless and inconsistent as Franco-Ortiz. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
TAKE THIS CLASS! I have always been terrible at math but Dr. Ortiz-Franco truly cares about the success of his students, and took the time to help me with all my questions. He offers study sessions twice a week, lots of office hours, and for the final he brought us bagels while letting us use our books. I took this class as pass/fail and passed
He isn't very clear with information but its an extremely easy class! The test are really easy and the professor is very funny and loves his job.
Teaches beyond the textbook & about life outside the classroom. Although attendance isn't mandatory it is necessary. Teacher gives clues about test problems. I disliked that the course has no set calendar. I prefer to have a syllabus with test dates so I can prepare. The teacher's assistant is helpful but flakey & cancelled study sessions.
Attendance is not mandatory but necessary. Professor teaches beyond the textbook, about life. Funny and very understanding. You're missing out if you don't take his course. I hated math & he taught me how it pretains to everyday things. Just wished syllabus had a set test calendar. Teaching assistant was helpful but flakey.
His lectures are straight from the textbook. Attendanceparticipation doesn't matter as long as you do your homework and learn the material yourself. The tests are super easy, even numbers from textbook. The SI sessions saved my life. Prof Ortiz is really funny and cheerful so lectures aren't boring. As long as you do your work, you'll be okay!
Very kind to student and dedicated to his job, extremely willing to help those in need. Reasonable tests and homework load.
Loves to teach and love a challenge! I suck @ math & he helped me. Always available during office hours but not quick with emails. (He's the 1st to admit that:)
amazing, take him. he's like my best friend
Really amazing professor. Definitely make time for his office hours because this is the key to succeeding if you're struggling. Professor Ortiz-Franco is a lot more intelligent than he looks, and will give you advice on more than just math. He's hilarious, makes lectures enjoyable, and makes tea for his students (chai is his favorite). He cares!!
Really funny and nice guy who has a passion for math. He wants his students to succeed so he grades nicely on the test and gives half credit as long as you show some correct work. He is a little difficult to follow sometimes in class but if you ask him questions he is always willing to help.
He is one of those teachers that wants to see all of his students pass and helps them do this. He is probably the best math 109 teacher at chapman and I would personally take his class again
By far my favorite professor I've had so far at Chapman. I showed but a little more than half the time . He's very thorough so if you've learned the material previously it can get a little boring (why I skipped) but great if it's new material. The homework is great practice and not too hard. He also brings class food for the final!
Best teacher! His is super helpful when taking tests! I would definitely take him again :)) Definitely go to his office hours! His tests are not hard at alll!
Took this class my first semester of freshman year.. Easiest math class I have ever taken. 3 tests + a final, homework due the day of the tests, and he never checks attendance. I go to MAYBE 1 class a month, aside from the day of the test, and I've only gotten A's in this class.
10/10 recommend this professor. he gave out extra credit and gave us a take home test and the final was open note
BEST TEACHER AT CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY!!! absolutely loved taking this class with professor Luis. He will do anything to help you pull your grade up, and makes math class actually fun... Tests are pretty easy(made up of only 10 questions) and homework is graded based on effort not completion.
Hilarious Professor! Only two tests, homework, and final are graded. Provided extra credit opportunities to raise grade. Homework due on the day of test. Ortiz-Franco is super smart, so it is hard to follow along his lessons -- but it is no issue as I just teach myself. Overall, would still recommend as he is super funny and the best!
Ortiz-Franco's teaching style is not for everyone, I couldn't follow along in class, which made me have to teach the material to myself. But, he makes it up for his personality. Even so, this class is easier compared to other MATH109s. The way the grading is structured makes it very easy to get an A as HW is easy, tests are short, & EC is offered.
Took the class many years ago, before "Rate my professors" existed. Before highSpeed internet. While still some schools were Colleges not Universities (Go Panthers!) . He is a rare gem, one of the very few memorable professors for all the right reasons!
