Hilarious guy!! Super nice - interesting/entertaining!
Easy class if you attend, take notes, and read. Entertaining and interesting.
Didn't really think that the class was easy or interesting, but then again I am a Psyc major. Tests that were given were ok but I do question the validity of some of the questions till this day. Seems to favor the females in class with help, etc.
very good. funnny. for test, just read the chapters and memorize it. the test are striaght off the book. notes not all important.
reads straight out of the book so only about a third of the class was there on any given day. dont really see why we needed to buy the study guide.
funny, interesting, excellent speaker
funny and can be a friend as well. great lecturer and tends to give you everything on test in his lectures. just listen and study you will be fine.
he is very confussing, does not know what he is explaining. He knows the material, but lacks clarity. He has dry sense of humor, intimidating, and makes you feel stupid. When asked a question, after rolling his eyes, confuses you more.
excellent teacher who believes in his craft. entertaining and helpful. MUST read the book and pay attention in class. no free rides here, you'll walk away knowing your stuff. unique professor i've chosen to take multiple times.
Great professor. He is very funny which makes his lectures alot easier to attend. His exams are usually 40-60 MC questions. Very easy, mainly just definition questions. All you really have to do is study the vocabulary for each chapter and know the main p
learned a LOT in this class and enjoyed the enthusiasm between him and the other students. made class go by quickly. soooo much reading to be done, but very interesting. he doesn't do test reviews, but does give bonus questions.
His lectures are okay but his tests has nothing to do with the notes he gives in class. you have to read the damn book to do real well on his tests. it's just not vocab...you really have to read. he gives bonus points. if you read and know your stuff you'll pass with an A or B. good luck!
Lectured from the book so you don't need to take notes. Some test Q's could be confusing, but most were pretty simple and straight forward. The paper is extremely easy. And yes, he is funny...
Salinas is the funniest guy you'll ever meet. I almost changed my major to sociology b/c I love his class so much. He really makes it fun and easy to understand. If you take this class TAKE SALINAS!!!
really liked him. looking forward o taking his criminology class.
Alright guy, but lectures have NOTHING to do with tests. Rarely will a question be from them. All the theories get confusing and thats what he mainly asks about on tests. Make sure you read and re-read the chapters if you want to pass. And..he wears BOW-TIES to class...
salinas is hilarious. buy the book -- its essential for the class. note taking is optional; most questions on tests are from the book. he doesn't take attendance so you can just show up for the tests. take him if you'd like, but studying is a must to pass the class.
he's a nice professor, but can be unclear from time to time. most of his test material are from book. memorize book and u should do ok.
he was pretty easy to pass but not get an A. you don't need the text book. homework is easy. tests are hard unless you take notes everyday and do the online stuff. but easy to pass..
Gotta love him! I loved his class and his lectures were interesting although not very helpful for the test. If you're not doing well just ask him for study help and he'll do what he can for you!
you need to study from the book cuz his tests don't cover much from the lectures.
NOT A LITTLE BUT VERY SENSITIVE. U WILL REALLY THINK THAT HES ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE. TALKS ALOT ABOUT RUNNING. STUDY THE BOOK. LECTURES ARENT VERY HELPFULL AND THE ATHLETES GET GIVEN GRADES. THATS WACK. WILL HAVE U LAUGHING AT HIM ALL DAY
lectures do not help for exams. so reading the chapters is a must! his lectures are funny, but if only they actually helped! attendance is not taken.
he's plain weird. his lectures don't help at all. read the book.
Interesting class but the test are hard. He doesnt take attendance but his test are based on book and lecture.
He is very respected as a sociologist in Houston. Excellent professor - and is very funny! Uses different mediums to teach. I wish I could take another class with him. Just show up and pay attention! And the text is easy to read.
His tests are really hard and his lectures don't really have anything to do with the test. If your looking to get an A don't take this class!!!
he was GREAT. vERY NICE. hIS TESTS ARE A LITTLE HARD BUT IF YOU READ AND TAKE NOTES YOU WILL DO FINE.
very interesting, but lectures have nothing to do with tests or book. It was a fun class, but difficult to get an A. If you red the book it is possible to get a solid B
Dr. Salinas is very nice. To the previous comments, of course the lectures won't make sense if you don't read the book! Why else would he require you to buy it? You are suppose to the read the chapters before class and then attend the lectures in order to clear any questions or confusions. You should know that classes in college work that way!
He's funny and gives xtra credit for going to class.
He is a great professor; he gives excellent notes and examples (very eloquent in his lectures) sometimes from his own experiences. He is also very funny with his use of sarcastic humor. The exams are pretty start forward and easy if you read the book and he gives extra credit, at times for simply attending class.
I love this professor!!! He is so nice and funny! He has a really sweet personality. If you miss a few classes, it's np. He's not strict about attendence, but you will want to go to this class! (Mexican Studies). Tests aren't too tough, and 1 paper which isn't too crazy.
His class is somewhat just for entertainment. You don't have show up because he doesn't have attendence and his notes are on webCT anyways. Lectures don't even help. The tests are based on the text so if you don't like reading, then don't take this class. Its not that hard. Just read.
great professor I strongly recommend him. This class was actually fun to attend. His tests are not that hard but do read and study. There should be more like him.
Tests come from the book. Go to a review session before the test, and the TA will tell you exactly what is on it. He is a funny and informative teacher. There is a chapter about increasing monetary inequality, but the book gets it wrong from an economic standpoint and many of the claims made are false. Just memorize the info at the reviews.
2 M/C+short answer exams, the final was M/C, not cumulative, and not short answer, one 15-page paper [EASY!], and sometimes he curves if the class did really bad. We also watched two movies. Questions on the exam were generally easy but some questions seem to come from left field. Read the book, know main points on graphs. Take notes in lecture.
I love him as a professor! He's extremely helpful. You don't need to go to his class, you just have to study the textbook and keep up with announcements. You must turn in your only homework because that's 25% of the semester's grade. Anyone who doesn't get an A in his class is only because you don't study the textbook hard enough.:)Hope this helps!
I loved this class. It was interesting, easy, and the book we had was extremely pleasant.
Best professor at UH...
Some of his test questions are really too detailed, doesn't test on what we should know, and grading practice was inconsistent. The only tip I can give is read and re-read, take notes, make chapter outlines, know everything in the chapters. Very frustrated student.
Not a hard class just not the greatest. He is not clear on anything and when you ask him a question he doesn't answer directly. He seems confused alot of the time even though he is a nice guy. I expect more with the money I pay!
This is a very complex course. The professor is a nice guy but he does not really explain anything that is on the test. There are 3 test given throughout the semester and all of the are extremely HARD!!! My only suggestion is to R.E.A.D. the textbook, class notes, and attend the class regulary.
The material isnt hard but this teacher's test are crazy! he tests you on material you've never read in the textbook or heard in the lectures. I studied for all 3 exams read the chapters 3X and did all the extra credit and actively participated in the class and still ended up with only a B+.
I really enjoyed the class!! he is very funny and explains in detail. Be careful though because tests are worded tricky so you must understand the concepts..make sure you read the book and study the questions at the end of each chapter {youll see them again}!! overall, one of my favorite teachers!!!
Class was alright, all you had to do was READ the text book because his test questions were very detailed, but it was doable. So make sure to attend class daily and he has review sessions which the TA tells you what is going to be on the test. I got a B+ and I did not devote my life to this class..
Class is very easy. You need to read the book to get decent grade but you don't have too. You can just read the notes and make a C or something. He only had 2 papers due and it wasn't hard. He can't stand people who are disrespectful by using cell phones or reading other material while in class.
This was SUCH an easy class. I barely attended and barely read the book...I managed to get a B in the class. I would've made an A if I had read the books or studied the notes. Attendance is NOT mandatory. Whoever says the tests are freakishly hard are just dumb.
salina's class is very easy. not to influence anyone not to go to class, but his tests are in a way straight from the book. so read the chapters. but still go because it is interesting material. awesome t.a.
Interesting prof. Easy class, easy test. If you try you should be able to pass. Plus he's a funny lil man.
Tests were multiple choice, & came straight from the book, which he goes over in class. Class was fun - he's got a good sense of humor & cool stories.
I took his class during the summer. He gives multiple choice tests but they are tricky. Some questions seemed to have more than one answer and most came from the book. He gives a curve on tests. Wrote one 15 page paper but it was easy. If you read the book and pay attention in class then you should get an A.
His lectures come from the book so make sure you read. Come to class as much as you can, recently he's been adding lecture stuff in tests. He brings candy for Halloween!
It is obvious Mr. Salinas cares about his subject as well as his students. His tests aren't too hard, but you do have to study and having the textbook helps. Attend his lectures because they're really helpful and take notes because he doesn't post them online.
He's a nice man and funny and lectures are interesting.. He says to study book and look at lecture slideshows online but his tests were ridiculously hard. I thought it'd be much easier than it was. Made a D+ and I'm not dumb!
A funny guy.I laughed everyday in his class.Reading the book is a must.Attendance not mandatory.Study the statistics for tests! But other than that tests are pretty easy.
I love him! His class is always so much fun! Also he is a very funny guy. His tests are easy and class is easy in general.
He's a great teacher. Really funny and gets along with the class well. He makes learning sociology interesting. he also has lots of personal experience. tests are not easy at all if you dont study. if you do it will be fine and he gives curves sometimes. strongly recommended for socio!
Great professor! He's funny and makes the class interesting by adding any personal experiences. Your book is your survival guide, so it's very important that you read or else you will fail. 4 tests, all multiple choice. Easy A when you make an effort.
prof. salinas is great! his classes are interesting and funny. he gave out candy for Halloween, has 2/3 simple hmk assignments and even brought his dog to class once! I never once didn't want to go to class. Just study your notes and read the text and this class will be once of your favorites!
Awesome Professor. Really interesting lectures. I wished I could take this class again. TAKE HIM OVER ANY OTHER SOCIOLOGY PROF!!! You wont regret it.
This is the best class I have taken at UH so far. Salinas is one of the funniest people I have ever met, and I looked forward to his lectures every day. EVERYONE should take this class. EVERYONE!!!
I really don't understand why all these people are saying his class was super easy. I am an A student and this class is one of the ONLY b's I will be making for the whole year. YES Salinas is super funny and his lectures are very interesting, but his tests are HARD and TRICKY..even if you read. If you're looking to make an A, please dont take him.
Salinas isn't an efficient teacher when it comes to being prepared for his test. The test are extremely tricky and confusing. I don't understand why so many people gave him good comments. It's probably Salinas himself leaving the comments for students to get tricked into taking him. BEWARE
definately not an easy class you have to literally read every single chapter including little pictures on the side. many students who have never had a b before ended up with a struggling for a b+
Lectures themselves are bearable but the tests are SO HARD. You literally need to memorize the book. Also all of his online assessments are required though not difficult. Just make sure you remember to actually do them. They count for a portion of your final grade.
Very interesting class! Salinas is a great teacher. His lectures are really interesting and he actually talks about a lot of his own experiences with the topics he lectures about. His tests are hard, but if you read the textbook and learn the vocabulary terms you should do well in the class.
He was nice, but he seemed unorganized sometimes. I was taking his first ever hybrid class so everything seemed really rushed. Online assignments are easy but it won't help you with your exams. You literally have to read through each chapter twice to actually do well on the test. He dropped the lowest test grade so I guess it's okay.
Class is not easy! Literally have to read the whole book and remember everything thing in order to do good. I'm an A student but his class was extremely hard. The TA was very rude. No help. Grades: 4 tests on which he will drop the 1 lowest grade and there is 1 homework grade. Talk to him about the homework before hand. Not recommended! Good luck!!
Nice prof. Reading the book is mandatory b/c his test questions are all found in it. Easy A as long as you keep up with the reading. 4 non comprehensive tests. 1 very easy vocab hw. no final.
Attendance isn't really mandatory as you could no doubt pass by simply reading the book and doing the *NOT REQUIRED BUT PROVIDED* quizzes, but his lectures are pretty entertaining. I enjoyed the class and it was an easy A. Just read the chapters and do the quizzes, that is where basically ALL of the material from the test comes from, word for word.
Guy is a total jerk. Very disrespectful to students. Not helpful and if you ask him a question he will start walking away while talking to you (like he's trying to get away). Going to class is useless. He adds nothing to the course, all you need to do is read the textbook to pass. I could have taught myself with the half ass job he calls teaching
Good teacher, funny most times. Test are straight form the book
Salinas is a great prof! Take him if you can. He really taught me alot and made the course interesting! Tests are not the easiest but just attend class and take notes and read. Flash cards worked for me when studing. Class is not mandatory but very beneficial! He is absolutely great, take him if you can. Don't text in class he WILL make you leave!
Dr. Salinas is the best professor I've ever had. Everyone, please stop complaining about the difficulty & having to read the entire book- GET OVER IT! I took him after I graduated from UT so maybe I'm used to rigorous classes but this is college, you guys. Please understand how accomplished and extremely educated Dr. Salinas is!! TAKE HIM!!
I took Salinas for Mex Amer culture. I had zero interest in taking this class, dreaded it actually. However- he is a great professor, and the material is pretty interesting. Read the book CAREFULLY and listen when he speaks, and you will do fine. Even though I initially only signed up for a soc credit, I highly recommend this class.
Took him during the summer session. His class is boring and his tests are HARD. U must read the books. Overall he's a good/funny professor but u have to work hard to earn ur grade.
Dr. Salinas is the greatest!!! I did not want to take this stupid required course but ended up loving it. He is funny too, and that is the best! But if you want to get a good grade, you have to study,I mean really. And you have to go to class, but it is so much fun you will want to!
is not mandatory to attend class but it is helpful. He does show videos so make sure you attend class those days. You definitely need the book. I wouldnt say the class is super hard because is definitely not but, make sure you study for the tests. All test are multiple choice at least when i took it during the summer.
It is an honor to have Dr. Salinas as a professor. He is a very well accomplished man. Yes, as in all classes, you must attend class, I hear he's awarding attendance now. Read the Textbook, every bit, even graphs. Do the mylabs, it's really helpful. B attentive, show up for class, and read the text Can't go wrongCan't hate a man in a bow tie either
horrible teacher please do not take him. always try to ask for help and he completely ignores. turnt in my paper without it stapled and he didnt accept it. dont know what i was thinking taking this guy.
Professor Salinas is a very accomplished instructor. He makes the class interesting and if you be friend him, he'll help you further understand the course.
His lectures have nothing to do with the tests. its more like self study. do not cram.
He is Great JUST MAKE SURE TO STUDY THE POWER POINTS AND READ AND YOU SHOULD BE FINE
Professor Salinas is an awesome teacher, he's not boring at all. He goes over the important points in each chapter every lecture, and gives examples of personal experience often. I'm currently in UScholars, and taking his class made me want to major in Sociology.
I love this class and this professor. He made Sociology very interesting for me, and I'm very glad that I took his class. Most professors won't even make eye contact with you throughout the semester because the classes are so big, but despite the fact I felt like I knew him. Highly recommended! He's an awesome teacher.
10 out of 400 made an A this semester. Independent study got me a B, along with his useless lectures. Soft voice and does not speak into mic.
This class is appealing thanks to Prof. Salinas’s teaching style. He combines a bunch of real-life situations with an “easy to follow” (textbook based) lecture. The textbook is a decent read; it is concise and it won’t bore you to death.
Comments regarding the test were so right. Although, I really enjoy the lecture because he explains every neccessary concept so thoroughly and provides understanble example. But, the test is unbearble with questions that are containing small detail. Therefore, read the book at least twice and practices on the online quize then you might be fine.
this teacher is terrible. don't take him. it seriously is impossible to get an A. 10 out of 400 people got an A. His tests have nothing at all to do with the notes. if you have him drop the class asap.
his intro to sociology class is hard. bottom line-terrible teacher. His tests are impossible to get an A on. If you don't believe me, then wait for the grade sheet to come out at the end of the semester and you will see it yourself.
I had already taken this class elsewhere, but had to repeat it since UH didn't accept the credit. The lectures were average. He was unhelpful, but he is very busy.So you would think the TAs would pick up some slack. WRONG.Good luck if anything is incorrect or you need help... no one has time for you. you might get an email reply... might not.
Interesting class, not much work but no matter how much I read I can't seem to get over an 82 on my test, maybe it's me maybe it's not. 4 test MC, and online homework.
Was a hybrid class. The online work was SO easy. Could have done the entire semester's online work in 1 day. The tests are a bit hard - read the text in & out & memorize it. Salinas doesn't answer emails tho. he is unclear; he doesn't answer questions. Email your TA & not him; he won't help. Got an easy A though.
DR. SALINAS WAS VERY THOUGHTFUL AND HELPFUL WHEN I NEEDED HELP UNDERSTANDING SOCIOLOGY QUESTIONS, HE ALWAYS WENT OUT OF HIS WAY TO TAKE HIS TIME WITH ME. STUDENTS HAVE TO WORK AROUND A TEACHER'S SCHEDULE. HE IS IN HIGH DEMAND BY STUDENTS, SO YOU HAVE TO ARRANGE TO MEET WITH HIM AHEAD OF TIME. LIKE ANY PROFESSOR, HE HAS OFFICE HOURS FOR A REASON.
This is the nicest guy. He interacts with the class and his lectures are interesting. You must read and memorize the book. Do well on homework, read, and take the quizzes in the socio lab website and you will do just fine. Also, don't text or you will be put out.
He never answered emails and did not list office hours on his syllabus (and it took him 3 weeks to give us a syllabus). His grading was inconsistent and tests were terribly worded and unorganized. He used to be a good professor.
Your best best is to teach yourself. Don't bother asking for help or correcting him when he randomly changes the syllabus without telling anyone. He will walk out of your conversation mid sentence. His tests have nothing to do with his lectures and record all your lab assignments, print the record just in case he loses your grades like mine.
I don't recommend this guy. Especially if you read the chapters back and forth, there's always stupid incredibly detailed questions. Such as, from the demographic map blah blah blah...how many people blah blah. Yeah you have to read and memorize every map/graph/chart from the book for that A.
Dr Salinas is great! His lectures are very interesting. He is definitely a people person. I have taken this class before at another college, but the credits didn't transfer to U.H. I wasn't looking forward to taking it again. But I am so glad I did! GO TO CLASS, READ THE BOOK, YOU WILL BE FINE. The tests can be hard only if you don't READ THE BOOK!
Dr. Salinas is a great professor, an expert in his field. His tests cover the book chapters and class lectures. Planning on missing classes and expecting a good grade is wrong. He was always available during his office hours and replied to emails. Always supported his students such as myself. Enjoyed his class, I recommended it to my friends.
Awesome professor! He is very passionate about sociology and gives great examples. Dr. Salinas' love of teaching really does show. Make sure you go to class. DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE IN HIS CLASS. He will kick you out!
He's really a hard to understand professor. His tests are hard and confusing there is so many questions that won't be from neither the text or the lecture. He thinks that all of the students should study at least 3 hours a day. And his chapter test are so pointless none of them would be on the mid-term. His syllabus are so confusing.
The only way to make an A on his exams is to literally memorize every statistic/graph in the book. His lectures are not in depth. You must rely on reading the chapters over and over again to make at least a B+. He is really nice as a person, but the exams are ridiculous. Some of the questions might not even pertain to sociology.
Reading the entire chapters is the only way to pass his exams. Not a very good instructor, and makes changes without informing you.
I make great assignment grades, I attend most of his lectures, and I study the material front and back but his tests are difficult. For his tests, you literally have to memorize every fact in the book, including every picture and graph. He's an entertaining teacher in his lectures and he is passionate about sociology, but his tests will kill you.
For one the test are HARD!50+ questions over 3 dense broad chapters. In order to pass, you have to read every little detail. Granted he is really passionate about Sociology i haven't attended a class where he went over the whole slideshow of notes, he small talks a lot. If you're willing to read long chapters weekly i wouldn't recommend this class
I paid attention in class and noticed that the questions on the test were on the slides... Not in the exact form but there. I learned Blackboard on my own unlike the stupid student who did not even know where to learn it.
Nice guy. The material is very easy and I know most of it but his test are very confusing. To pass you must know the smallest details, rather than the main idea. 3 exams. 1pg essay and 20pg essay. He changed the due date for one of the assignments and completely forgot. If you did not turn it in on the original due date... too bad.
Dr. Salinas is a very nice guy. His lectures are not that bad either. But, his test are pretty hard. He likes to focus on the little details within the chapters. His TA's might give a review but don't just study the review or else you might not do well. Overall, good professor but the test are pretty challenging.
You don't have to show up to the lectures, but most of the test questions are in the lecture. He post slideshows online. Make sure you DO NOT miss the written assignment, he does not remind you and it is worth 20% of your grade. His tests are easy to pass, but difficult to get an A on because there's at least 5 questions about random statistics
AWFUL the lectures are pointless, the book is impossibly dense and the tests are too specific. Not to mention the program he uses (pearson) is extremely glitchy and not at all user friendly. Would not recommend
He's a nice guy but his class is confusing and unorganized. He makes changes without clearly informing students and expects you to know what's going on. His test are very detailed. There is a 20 page paper that isn't as bad as it sounds. If you do not have to take him, I wouldnt
Professor Salinas was very approachable and friendly. He was willing to help, and was pretty lenient on due dates and such. Attendance isn't mandatory, however make sure you know the pwpts for the exams, and do the reviews he gives. His final isn't cumulative, and he curves too. Overall, pretty straightforward guy and class.
Dr. Salinas is a very humorous man. However, I couldn't seem to cope with his teaching methods. His class wasn't hard, but I felt as if his lectures consisted of him relating everything to his life, rather than actually teaching the concept. You must read the book if you want to pass the test. 1 homework assignment, and weekly chapter quizzes.
Dr. Salinas is very passionate about sociology and gives entertaining lectures. Attendance used to not be mandatory, but he does reward you for going to class. Go to class; the slideshows hold the almighty test questions. Read the book, including graphs.DO NOT USE YOUR PHONE IN CLASS; It is disrespectful and he won't hesitate to kick you out.
A great class. It is well organized. His PowerPoints and reviews are posted on Blackboard. His lectures are entertaining. His tests are not easy. I love the way he relates the concepts to the world around us. He said it is related to a higher level of understanding. Definite recommend.
He is not helpful at all. He will give you a review over the exam and the exam has nothing that was on the review. Textbook is extremely dense. Class average was a 69. I could of had a 3.5 GPA if it was not for this class.
The professor knows the material, but what he teaches is NOT what is on the exams. Regardless of you reading the material over and over, the questions on the exams are over specific, little things from that chapter, which are almost impossible to memorize. If you are just trying to get rid of the credit, take Psychology. Attendance not mandatory.
His lectures are interesting, but they didn't help me know the material very well. You NEED to read the book to pass the class. Even when I do read, it's difficult to pass because a lot of questions are very specific and hard to remember. You don't need to go to the class unless you want to, because you'll get everything from the book anyway.
You must read the book if you want to pass the tests and you also have to memorize the smallest of details in the textbook. The tests were also very difficult, since the reviews cover about 60% of what is on the actual test. He grades hard on the one paper that you have to write. However, he was also very passionate about teaching sociology.
Do not take course if reading to you is not easy. The SocLab quizzes are easy if you have the book, the test are like the quizzes but without the book. And without the book you might as well fail the quizzes.
Do not take this class if you want a GPA booster. He says the same thing as the book. If you don't attend his lectures but avidly read the book and take notes, you'll pass with a B - maybe. He doesn't really help you and is unresponsive in his emails and you have to talk to his TA if it concerns your grade. You WON'T get an "A" on the tests.
Don't expect to finish w an "A" in this class. His tests ask for dates, people, quotes, stats, historical examples, and even irrelevant details from the book that has nothing to do with Sociology. Expect to read the chapters MORE THAN ONCE. That's what I did to get at least a B- on the tests and they're 60% of your final grade. The class ave : C-
Be prepared to read the chapters multiple times to possibly a B on the four exams, an A is out of the question. Asks the most minute details and statistics that are nearly impossible to memorize . Questions on tests are extremely subjective, be prepared to guess, others aren't relevant at all One homework grade that is graded ridiculously hard.
For the love of god take Psychology or something because if you're taking this for your social science credit, you will not get a good grade. If this is your major, I feel bad for you. Online assignments are alright, but the paper and the tests (which is 80% of ur final grade) is super FREAKING hard. Tests have almost nothing to do with the class.
Professor Salinas is a nice man and his lectures are entertaining sometimes. The problem is that his lectures don't reflect the exams at all. You'll have to almost memorize the entire chapter to know the test material. The class should've been an easy A. I wouldn't recommend taking his class.
By far the worst professor I have ever had. He never helped at all. His lectures? Yeah, more like him blabbing about life and expecting you to understand everything. Honestly you're better off reading the book and never going to class. He is the complete opposite of helpful and caring.
I took this course for an easy A but boy was I wrong! There is no point in going to the lectures because he basically just tells anecdotes about his life. The SocioLab quizzes are straight from the book. The tests are similar to the quizzes and are very specific. I never made higher than a 90 which seemed to be a fluke. Would NOT take him again.
His lectures have NOTHING to do with exams and the exams are VERYYYYY SPECIFIC. He even forgot to post the study guides for my class but not the other classes and he didn't even offer extra credit to fix this mistake. I would study an average of 15+ hours for each exam, fill out the guides in detail, and never made over a 90. Don't take!!!!
Very boring teaching style. Rambles a lot about himself, thus making the lectures not mandatory to attend. Tests are difficult and you must read all and every chapter of the book to pass them. Tests cover small statistics in each chapter that are difficult to remember. Would not take again.
This professor provides zero communication andor feedback. No help whatsoever.
Syllabus provided but did not follow it at all. At the beginning of semester online course was clear cut and due date were available based on syllabus. It changed without any notification. Asked if we had to do additional assignment, no answer. No grade posted or communication during class. Do not take. Should have gotten A but ended with C
Just all around awful experience. Tests are not even close to being relevant to the notes from class, lectures are so convoluted and about his own personal stories, and the one homework assignment is graded with absolutely zero clear rubric and he doesn't even read them (20% of the grade too). Can't really say much more than just don't take him.
I loved going to his lectures. He did not read the book to us. His lecture supplemented the material in the book. It was obvious he put a lot of effort into the lecture.
Dr. Salinas is very funny and keeps the class laughing. He is very interesting and intelligent, keeps the class interested and focused on what's important. He was fair in his grading, I did not think he was easy, but I managed to get an A, and definitely had to study all the course material. I think he is one of the best professors I've ever had.
If you are going in to the Social Sciences , he's your guy. If your looking to take Sociology as a humanities elective , avoid at all costs.
I LOVE THIS HIM!!! He makes class fun in his own way! The book that you have to read is like a giant magazine and is extremely easy to read. Pay attention, read the chapters, do the pretests, and you will get an A. I would recommend taking his class to anyone! You will enjoy it! :) But if you use your phone you get a "yellow card."
I was surprised by one the comments below...90% of the test question came from material in his Power Points. I Guess you have listen to the lecture, which I find very interesting. If you could not understand the homework, define 10 concepts and give real examples of each of the concept, maybe you don't belong in college. Taking another Salinaclass
He was overall a really nice guy and knew how to tell great stories, but his personal life stories told in class do not help with exams at all! He was really nice, but I don't think he was a good professor. Got off topic in class many times, and the tests consist of mostly very specific bookreading content and not very much from his power-points.
In his lectures, he related the class content to current events and other aspects of American life. He was also very humorous. I would bring friends along for the lectures and they always enjoyed them too. I can not wait to take another class with him.
He was so personable. His classes were like visits to friend's homes. He brought his dog to class. He handed out Trick or Treat Candy. He would ask about our weekend. He made it so easy I did not realize I was learning so much. I would certainly recommend to others. If you do what you are supposed to do, you will do well.
I loved the way he would come into the class and greet us, "Good Morning Class." I really enjoyed his class this semester and would like to thank him for teaching this class. The lectures felt like conversations rather than lectures and it allowed me to look at our society from a different perspective. I would like to take another class from him.
I missed the first 2 lectures & I believe that is where I went wrong. The first lecture is where the professor explains the expectations so I went in blind. Regardless you expect the professors lectures to be relevant to the homework or tests. That was not the case, Salinas basically gets in front of the class and rambles for an hour about nothing.
It was a large class. He was very connected to most of the students during the lectures. He walked around the classroom a lot. It was to try to stay connected to us. I hope to take another class.
do not take.. I thought It was going to be a GPA booster but was wrong his lectures are about his personal life not even worth going to class you would be better off reading the book and taking the exams
Where do I start? I have never met anyone as lazy and uninvolved as Professor Salinas. You literally go into class and his PowerPoints are just screenshots of the book. And then for each test he expects you to read and master 90 pages of stuff from the textbook. There are 4 tests a semester. (continued in next post)
There were pretty much like jeopardy questions on some of the test. Like how many people voted in the last election? Well damn I dont know and if it was in the text book, its such a tiny little fact that you dont think a 60 question exam will have questions like that. (continue in next post)
Its literally just common sense stretched out into a useless class. Also Professor is just like really self-involved and talks about himself ALL THE TIME. People also watch Netlfix during my class. Thats all reallybasically just dont do it to yourself.
Salinas is extremely nice, but his tests are very statistical and detailed. If you don't read the chapters over 3x you will get at most a C. He claims he uploads the powerpoints, but he leaves a lot out and shows you in class. Not a class to take to boost your GPA. I managed to get 2 A's and 1 C on his tests.
Doesn't really teach, just goes over pictures in the book and talks about terms he thinks are important but nothing he says is on the test. Everything is on Pearsons, and read the book.
The test in CASA were very hard. Most of the material on the tests did not seem to be covered in his lectures. No matter how much I studied for his test I still did not made higher than a C on any.
Clearly passionate about Sociology and he's always willing to help with questions. His anecdotes during class connect to the concept so they're easier to understand. However, the MySocLab tests every two weeks are tedious and the exams are hard even with the reviews. I would recommend reading the textbook thoroughly.
Would not recommend to ANYONE. Our entire class attempted all semester to reach out with questions and he never responded to emails. A group of students had to hunt him down on campus to finally get in touch. Tests were based entirely off vague statistics instead of relevant information and we never got our graded assignments back.
Salinas is a great guy, but his tests are totally unrelated to what he teaches. Read the textbook thoroughly, don't look at the concepts look at the statistics. Got a B studied hard but always fell short
This is a class that you really can't screw off in. While attendance isn't necessary, that textbook, which is an etext, absolutely is. He is open to questions, but in general, the assignments and tests are hard. He does NOT offer extra credit, so you better study!
Great professor. He clearly knows his stuff and loves what he teaches. If you read the chapters thoroughly and understand the concepts well, you should do fine on the exams and the class overall. It takes work, but a good grade is very obtainable.
Very weird class. Lectures were not straight forward, he would branch out into anecdotes and keep rambling about them. But the tests, oh the tests, they were ridiculously hard, had some questions where it would ask the general them of the chapters but on many it would ask stupidly detailed stuff.
Do not take this class! Even if you are a Sociology major, take a different professor! This class is not a GPA booster and he made the class more difficult than necessary. The tests are difficult and subjective and he is not willing to help you out. I really regret taking this class and I did not learn anything useful. Lectures are also useless.
Do not take this class whether youre a sociology major or a business major just trying to get your soc/psych credit. Lemme break it down ... -Not to a GPA booster (GPA killer) -Lectures are USELESS -Useless powerpoints -MIsleading/useless reviews -Tests are VERY SPECIFIC (Most likely will fail) -Not bonus points 0/10
Do not take this class! This professors test were extremely specific and ridiculously hard! His lectures are pointless to the tests and he always goes off subject! You definitely need a memory for specific details otherwise you will not pass! He really is no help at clarifying things as well. Worst professor to take!
He doesn't do a great job with initial communication & his syllabus can be confusing as far as due dates & assignments, but if you email him he'll help you out. The course in itself is pretty easy & clear cut. Each chapter has 1-2 short quizzes & a chapter test (about 20-25 questions). 3 multiple choice exams. Not a hard class & he's a nice guy.
This professor is a really nice person, however, his reviews seems to have nothing to do with the test. About 50 percent of the stuff on the review was asked on the test if that. Where to find the rest of the questions is a mystery. One assignment a week followed by an exam after 3 chapters. You do not need to attend class to pass.
Yes, his exams are hard so please get ready to read.. however, his lectures are very interesting. His lectures briefly touch the subjects the tests are about so you have to look for the extended content in the book. Get ready to remember data you never thought you'd need. Good luck and may the force be with you.
Had no problem at all with grades in this class. Most of these people are trying to pass blame onto the professor because they weren't responsible enough to actually read the material. Do the work, and you'll do fine. Review the quizzes before the test, most of the material is the same. Such a good professor, always looked forward to his lectures!
I loved this class! I felt like it was a visit at Starbucks. Very relaxed atmosphere. I got to know the other students in class very well too. I also feel like I actually learned something about how society works. I'm going to miss that class. I would take another class if I could from him maybe Soc of Family or Soc of Sports.
This was a great class. He is obviously an experienced professor. I sort of wish I had been able to actually see him. My friends that had him in a F2F class say they actually looked forward to going to his class, because his lectures were so good.
His lectures are very funny and amazing to listen to. BUT HIS TESTS are absolutely difficult. He tends to get off track quite easily, and his power points do not help you with his tests at all. Prepare to study the textbook material on your own! I would not recommend him
His tests are no joke. They're super super hard no matter how well you read the book, you would eventually regret on taking his class. His lectures make no sense as they wouldn't help you a bit in the exam. Do not take him if you care about your grade.
The professor is extremely unorganized with Soc Lab ( the place where you take exams ). He changed up his syllabus midway through the semester confusing me personally as a student. Tests are extremely difficult and do not connect with his lectures or powerpoints. Do not recommend his class.
In class he just goes over a powerpoint that can be accessed on Blackboard but he adds his own anecdotes and experiences that may or may not relate to the given topic. The lectures weren't too bad because he was somewhat entertaining. You don't have to attend class to pass but might want to so you don't miss out on any announcements.
Professor Salinas seems quirky at the beginning of the year, however when it comes to the first test, there is barely correlation between his lectures and the test. READ THE E-TEXT word for word and you NEED to memorize even the smallest facts. Dont even bother asking him or his TA any questions, they are rude and clueless. Make sure to do soclabs!
This class was a mess!
Changed syllabus at the end of semester, lectures irrelevant to tests, heavy use of textbook, clueless about what was going on, uncaring about student's grades, strict on no cell phone usage
Do not take this class, it is not easy if you are a person who does not understand material without extra help. He believes in the phrase "there is a such thing as stupid questions" and he will call you out if you ask one. Lectures are extremely boring, and he goes off powerpoints that are not even his.
Find a different professor!! Professor Salinas changed the syllabus towards the end of the year. His lectures are just the powerpoints he posts online. GET READY TO READ. The information asked on the tests are 15% from powerpoints and 85% from the textbook. Be prepared to memorize every single tiny detail in the textbook. The tests are very tough.
Test and quizzes are super hard! If you are taking this class for your core classes just take psychology. Even if you go to lectures and read every night you will still hardly make a B. Nice guy and teaches really well, it's just something about those tests.
His lectures are completely off topic, and you feel confident but when you go to test, the test includes extremely specific statistics and hypothetical scenarios. He's very nice but I feel like you have to read everything entirely on your own, and you will still probably get a poor grade. Would not take again.
Prof Salinas is a very nice, educated man. His course was slightly unorganized in terms of the syllabus, grading rubric, & assignments. His exams are difficult & require lots of in-depth studying. I made C's all semester no matter how much I studied. Not that interactive with students or BB. Take his course if u want to study hard & apply yourself.
His intro to sociology class isn't too hard, it's just annoying. He changed our syllabus & grading criteria 3x during the semester. You'll probably have to either read the book or listen well in class to get an A, but the material itself isn't hard to learn. Take somebody else if you can.
He changed the syllabus and the homework assignment at the last minute. His class was very disorganized and short. We would be in class for maybe 30 minutes, 35 tops. This class should have been easy, but the test scores do not reflect it. The tests do not really reflect what is taught in class.
He was so entertaining. He brought us Halloween candy. He made us think. Very laid back except cell phone use. He would use soccer cards (yellow or red) to deal with this. It was kinda funny, although we could tell it really annoyed him. He gave a great talk at the end about how he hoped he had been important in our lives. I wanted to cry.
He loved to listen to us. There was an issue with the syllabus, but he took care of it and gave us a very generous credit for our work. I found that 80-90% of the material was from the powerpoints. I saw other evaluations that did not see this. maybe they don't come to class. He dealt well with the gliches of BB and CASA.
His syllabus is confusing when it comes to due dates so there's always confusion. This was an 8 week online course so there's a lot of info crammed in. It's basically reading & quizzes for each chapter. 3 tests & 2 essays. He never replied to my emails so if you need help, best bet is to ask classmates. Class isn't hard but he's not the best prof.
60% four Pearson exams (no final), 20% vocab definitions, 20% Pearson average. The tests are computer-generated, so they're directly from the book/practice tests (i.e., don't bother going to class). You'll get a decent grade if you keep up with Pearson, but an A+ on the tests basically requires you to memorize the chapter.
The professor is interesting and funny, but his test are extremely hard like almost impossible to pass no matter how hard you study. The only thing that saved my grade was taking the online quizzes. I would not take this class. It's unorganized and stressful. Dr. Salinas is a nice guy and seems to known what he's talking about but his test are hard
I feel like class was not needed. We had weekly online tests we had to take that he ended up just giving everyone an A for. You must study for exams by reading textbook. Watch out for statistics on tests. Must know the numbers.
Prof. Salinas is one of the most unorganized professors that I have ever had. His lectures are really dumb, doesn't talk about the subject at hand really. don't take him.
What is taught in class isn't always what is all on the test, so be careful. I personally wouldn't recommend him, but that's just me .
He always had fascinating insights about the topics covered in the chapter and would try to make it tangible and relatable to real life. His tests were near impossible unless you thoroughly read the textbook and memorized a good portion of it. He ended up curving, but the frustration with the exam scores made you really work hard and motivated you.
Excellent Professor. Very intelligent and very knowledgeable. He is on the local media a lot. He knows his field well and makes his lectures very interesting. Loved his bow ties. I looked forward to going to class. He expects you to do you assignments on time.
I loved going to his class. He was funny and entertaining and always impressed me with his knowledge. I paid attention in class used the test reviews online and did well.
I loved going to his lectures. I felt I was going to Starbucks to coffee with a smart friend. He was very easygoing, I felt I understood something in my life better after each lecture. If I had put in a little more effort, I would have gotten an A. He is a Pro at lecturing.
I wand to be a High School Science teacher. I have my role model in Salinas. Best lectures I have ever had. I hope to do the same.
I am finally getting around to rating Salinas. I recommended him to my friends and they love going to his class. I see that they are having the same experience that I did. His lectures were very interesting. If you paid attention instead of texting in class, you would hear most of the material from the tests. It was not super easy but not difficult
I am looking for another class to take from him. It is obvious that he really cares about his students. If I become a college professor, I would like to be like him. He relates the Sociological concepts to current events. I see him being interviewed on TV all the time.
He would arrive in class a few minutes early and chat with us about what we did over the weekend or our lives in general. One rainy day he brought extra umbrellas for students who did not have one. I am taking another class from him as soon as I can. He rally cares about students.
This was a fair class. I read the book. I looked at chapter outlines and test reviews he had online and I got A's on the tests It was pretty straight forward. I enjoyed looking at his bow-ties. He looks geeky but he seems proud of that. I recommend him.
Weekly online test off chapters and if you read powerpoint a lot easier. Only 2 short papers and 4 tests. Its a really simple class only reason I got a B instead of A was I didn't put off papers till day of. The weekly chapters only 10% of your grade. Take this online during summer or mini and it will be easy A-B depending on you.
All the negative reviews are very misleading. You don't even have to go to class really. Just read the textbook, take notes on the chapter, do the practice exams online and you should do okay on exams (they're kinda hard). Had a B (88) before the curve, ended with an A.
He always had current insights about sociology. He made it relatable to real life. His tests were easy if you went to class . He ended up curving, but the frustration with the exam scores made me work hard and motivated me.
His lectures aren't the most interesting but the examples he uses sometimes helps when taking tests. Homework was annoying, just use quizlet and don't forget to look at due dates.
He was the best. He showed he loved to be with us, not rather in his office doing research. I would talk to my family about his lectures. He really influenced my life. I would recommend him to everybody.
I looked forward to his lectures. They were so educational. I think the reason the friendme people did not like him is that they are spoiled brats. He had educational standards which make UH a Top Tier University. I am recommending him to family and friends. I hope he does not retire too soon.
He is really fun. He is personable. I look forward to coming to class and being inspired. Thank you for encouraging me to be even better.
There was a problem in the system where my paper was never submitted. I tried talking to him about it at the end of the semester and now I'm appealing my grade. He sent a lot of unprofessional emails including telling me that he would take the essay and then later telling me that he doesn't take late work. I sent proof it wasn't late.
I took this class over the break and the instructor was clear in his expectations. He responded when I asked for help and gave me feedback when I asked questions. He took time out during the holiday which I appreciated. I enjoyed seeing his interviews online. He is a respected professor. I learned a lot in a short class!
The class is simple with having just 12 chapter reading assignments + quiz and 4 exams. For those who wished(myself included) to power through the assignments and exams, you are unable to as the professor has it locked. The assignments are on McGraw Hill and essentially the way how this course is structured, you are forced to spend money for it.
