Narrow minded and arrogant. Killed my love of English. Avoid like plague
two of the best courses I've ever taken at UVIC
No Comments
Always friendly
every student should take at least one course w/ him--he's one of the very best.
May be a good prof and funny but his lectures are still boring
His marking is a little harsh, though he gives good constructive criticism.
damn. he's good.
v. hard but interesting class. good lectures and sense of humour, cute
Rude, unhelpful, unclear, and unfair
he is awful. lectures are boring. he's really cocky and puts down students.
difficult course material, but he is able to make it more manageable
He's a great prof - funny too. I don't get all the comments about putting students down. I've taken several classes with him and never encountered this. Brilliant and enthusiastic teacher.
Luke rocks. The readings we had in our class gave me a heads up for grad school. He's funny and easy to talk to -- just make sure you are direct and not shy when you go to his office. He's more than willing to help if you know what you want.
luke is the best. so so helpful if you go to him with an idea. he'll expand your thoughts and take them to amazing places. his class is tough, but it'll refine your writing and thinking. and he's got an awesome sense of humour!
Luke breathed new breath into my academic life. I found him noteworthy, formidable, and majestic. Most women in my class found him quite alluring, and while I shared not this sensation I enjoyed his capacity for hegemony. Cheers Luke!
Expansive, broad reaching, intelligent teaching. Brilliant. Hilarious.
Amazing prof, makes material clear and entertaining. He's helpful when asked. But, his expectations were too high. Did not get marks back until almost the end, making it hard to adjust to what he wanted and expected. He's hot!
Rude, conceited, arrogant, what else can I say about this man? He should not be allowed to teach.
Wonderful teacher; extremely intelligent and sensitive; teaching style not for the faint of heart but definitely one of the best.
favourite professor by far. brilliant.
Luke is intelligent, helpful, and funny. Luke's classes are not easy, but are worth the effort.
the course material was fantastic. despite its difficulty, luke's strange style makes it work (he combines multimedia, historical and personal anecdotes and dry but witty commentary on self and the progress of his talk). he's helpful in and out of class
Great prof; sometimes gets a little muddled in lectures, but is extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and easily approached. Has a VERY dry sense of humour; if you are a thin-skinned wuss (as some posters seem to be) you'd do well to avoid his classes.
One word will do it: boring. No, two: intensely boring.
Witty and knowledgable in class and willing to encourage opinions on subject matter. However, his expectations for essays are outrageous--essays are marked far too difficultly, and commments are very discouraging. I would not recommend his classes if you have any concerns over your G.P.A.
Although his classes are not easy, they provoke learning and Luke is extremely open and supportive towards any student's thought. Very approachable in and outside of class. His lectures vary from dry (due to material not him) to extremely comical and enjoyable. Overall, great professor.
People who like this guy are usually geeks and suck ups. Keep this in mind if you are considering one of his classes.
Carson was pretty boring, but maybe it wasn't his fault, just the material...not a very easy marker either, pretty brutal in your comments (they weren't all that helpful either)to say the least, he did not make me a better writer in my essays, and did not make me want to continue in this field.
Carson rules. He cuts all the political bs and focuses on the human experience that make American Poetry so yes, "alluring." But be forewarned: If you plan on coasting through university without ever having to grow or learn anything new--than this is not the course for you.
Luke rocks. He will, if you are receptive, bright and motivated, open your mind to some seriously- provocative Modernist poetry. Beware: it could change your life. His courses are not for slackers.
Luke has nutured my interest in modern poetry into an all out obsession. His classes are thought provocing and insightful. He is a hard marker, but if you take in everything (or even some) of what he is teaching you should be fine. He's funny, exciting, and even a little bit hot. A++ for Luke.
lectures can be fairly dull but there are fab ideas and luke does know what he's talking about. expects too much class convo. although he can be tough with his essay comments, he's also flexible and as long as you try you'll be all right. nice, smart, guy, and i'm glad i took these classes with him.
Professor Carson is wonderful. He has a beautiful voice and clearly loves his work. He totally turned me onto poetry. I had great feedback outside of class and learned a lot. My writing also improved. And he's funny!!
Terrible! Took all the good poets off the curriculum and focused only on obscure gay ones and their sexuality. I dreaded this class. boring!
sincere and encouraging. very clear. hilarious. sweet and makes me love the urban prufrock character.
This class is not enjoyable unless one cares to focus on dead gay male american poets. His lectures are long and rambling, he plays apparent favorites in class and expects discussion while most people just want to get by. He is a very tough marker without any latitude and is fairly unapproachable. Unless this class is manditory, don't take it.
So, he's not that bad. I really respect his choice (wasn't obscure at all) of poets, and am forever grateful to him for helping me discover Wallace Stevens. He's smart, funny, and relavent, but his voice makes me fall asleep. I get bored in class, and you might too, but give it shot anyway.
The person who complained about all the "dead, gay, male American poets" is a cretin: Ashbery is not dead, and Bishop is not male. The lectures were precisely the length of the class, and I found them engaging and insightful. If you don't want to participate in class and would rather "just get by", stay home. Why go to uni at all? You don't get it.
I found the course material somewhat interesting but Carson unfortunately drained any residual enthusiasm. He seemed to take pleasure in marking unnecessarily hard while encouraging pointless and often insipid comments in class. If you like drifting lectures & unclear poetical analysis, you might like this class. Otherwise, steer clear!
Luke has a cult following among the brainiacs of years past, and now I know why. He's excellent. Take this class if you're motivated and want to be challenged by some brilliant poetry. If you are at all open-minded you may discover that not only is he adorable, but he's one of the most inspiring profs in the department.
Carson has a narrow vision of what he expects from students on a term paper. If you are prepared to try to work with that by sucking up and stroking his ego, you will do fine.
Oh please. If you think this is hard, go try engineering or physics! Carson is cool and sexy and fun. If you're lazy or homophobic, take something else.
He is a hard marker and the class was unstructured and useless. I wanted to take a class in which we studied Eliot, but at the last minute Carson took him off the syllabus. I was disappointed, and by the end of the semester I realized the entire class was a disappointment. Avoid.
are we all talking about the same man? He is the nicest guy in the English department. Very interesting, and a wonderful lecturer. Hilarious and v. helpful.
Best prof I've had at Uvic. His lectures were so entertaining, witty and informative. If you work hard on your papers you'll do well - you can't **** them with this guy. I took three classes with him and learned more than all my other classes combined.
passionate, engaging, hilarious, extraordinarily helpful, approachable and very, very sexy. a man i'd like to know for a very very long time. so encouraging and respectful of class time limits. a true master of his subject with so much love for what he teaches!
Carson was great fun and very helpful. He's funny as hell, so the classes keep you awake. Seems very interested in the subject matter. I definitely recommend him!
Don't try anything different or creative on your essays; if you do, your marks will plummet. Simply regurgitate what you have learned in class and you will do fine.
Excellent, excellent professor. Very interesting lectures, very nice and funny. Also quite approachable outside of class, although sometimes slow at responding. I disagree with the previous comment- as long as your writing is clear and organized, you will do well on papers.
Interesting, articulate and engaging lectures. Supportive and genuinely interested in student discussion, very respectful in that regard. ]Very passionate about his subject. My only criticism is that his feedback on papers was completely useless, even when I went to his office hours. Hard to get an A, but interesting class.
While the lectures are sometimes amusing, Carson tends to focus on very narrow themes, and if you don't recycle his own ideas in your papers, you're screwed. Outside of class he is unapproachable, and terrible at providing productive criticism. It seems he has a lot of free time on his hands, because he will dissect your paper until it is mulch.
I found his feedback on papers extremely helpful. While the course was challenging at times, the texts, lectures, and discussions were wonderful. I would definitely take another course with this professor.
Carson is a tough marker and if you are transitioning to Uni' I do not recommend him. He is funny, but also arrogant and this might turn some away. As well, lectures can sometimes be torturous as no one replies to questions, or gets involved.
Incredibly hard marker, no appreciation for papers that don't echo his own ideas, and a rambling, unfocused lecturer. Also, dull as the dullest dishwater. An hour & a half lecture with this guy was unbearable. Smug, preening and pretentious. Repeatedly heaped undeserved praise on one girl, simply because she continually stroked his ego. AVOID.
Interesting class, although very little focus on the formal aspects of the poets works, which is frustrating for those without much prior experience with poetry. Easy marker, especially if you attend class. Encourages discussion and doesn't reject anyone's ideas(even the most inane). Recommend.
Carson is a really excellent prof: intelligent, sensitive, and extremely engaged with the poetry he teaches. Thoughtful, profound lectures. Dry sense of humour! Essay assignments require dense, concise writing and thorough analysis firmly anchored in the texts themselves. Put in the work, and you can get a LOT out of his classes. Highly recommend.
This course is not for slackers, idiots, or people not interested in the subject. Professor Carson is witty, engaging and very funny. Willing to answer any questions. Very open and understanding. Gives excellent feedback!
Incredibly myopic and egotistical prof with unrealistic expectations and little regard for actual originality.
He chooses the most banal works for the syllabus. Works with no theme. Works that are beyond excruciating to get through. He is unapproachable and has ridiculously unrealistic expectations of students. Any more classes with him & I would consider dropping English as my major. Takes the joy out of studying English. only accepts his ideas parroted.
Don`t recommend.
Do not take a class from Carson, you will regret it. I went on this site and thought everyone posting were just slackers but please trust me, he will lower your GPA. He has impossible standards. I re-did ALL of my essays and no improvement.
Be prepared to work hard and closely with the texts. Carson is helpful if you bring him drafts and gives opportunities to improve your grade with simple quizzes and rewrites on papers. Idk why yall think he is arrogant; I don't get that vibe at all.
Not an especially compelling teacher. He wasn't very organized in his teaching and it's hard to follow because he spends a lot of time talking about background info rather then actually discussing the works.
Prof. Carson is a decent professor, but his lectures can be confusing and his assignments are frustrating. He is a very harsh grader, and while he leaves thorough comments on papers, many of those can be summed up in "you should have focused on my ideas." I put a lot of work into this class, but left with the lowest grade of my term.
One of my favourite professors and such a sweet man. Show up for class (it's not hard as he's pretty hilarious) and attempt to understand the material and you will do well. I have never once seen him shoot down any of his students and is VERY willing to allow anyone to completely change his mind about his perception of literature and poetry.
Carson can be a tough marker, but super fair. Always has a fantastic list of readings! He also lets you bring your coursepack with notes and readings into exams and midterms.
Really strong prof, well informed and passionate about the material. Readings and authors were really well selected. Not a difficult course to pass but if you want to do well you really have to work for it. Attendance is really necessary to understanding the material.
Great professor, and a really nice guy. A hard marker, but very willing to help you with drafts if you come by his office hours. Try hard and you'll do well.
makes the material very engaging
Dr. Carson knows his stuff, is helpful, and has exceptional insight into the course content. He will not, however, take any old crap handed in on a piece of paper, so if that's what you're used to, I'd go elsewhere. He'll give great feedback and help you with your papers. I would definitely recommend any of his courses.
In my 2 and a half years of taking English classes, this is by far the worst I have experienced. Shoots down every original idea of a poem you have that you put in your papers. I showed up to all classes and when I didn't simply re state all the things he taught in lectures, bad mark. Such a ridiculous grading system and will never go back. Failure
I've never regretted taking a class no matter how well/badly I did, until I took Carson's class. Biggest mistake of my undergrad.
came here to say some stuff but it's mostly been said. I was really disappointed with Carson.
Hard marker. I found he did not allow for other interpretations of the material. I worked very hard for the lowest mark of the semester. I am unsure how he grades things. I wouldn't take his class again. You might as well record his lectures and parrot his words word for word.
Would not recommend this prof. Poetry studied was very ambiguous and extremely hard to extract meaning from. Must attend lectures or you will not pass the pop quizzes that often times quizzed on random points that were not always directly related to material. A nice man, but I didn't feel that he cared about my viewpoint, only his.
This class is hard. This poetry is like some foreign language... prof is a cool guy though.
Dr. Carson has a sense of humor, and knows the material. He encourages group discussion, although since he obviously knows this area of English, he makes sure to emphasize the poet's intent behind their poem. However, he doesn't (and I repeat doesn't) shy away from sexually graphic content, and I wish I'd known that.
Although Luke Carson is passionate about American Poetry, he has high expectations for his students. He marks very difficult to the point where students feel helpless. He continuously says that the class is lacking more depth without further explanation. This class is difficult to excel in.
Professor Carson is not meant to be a professor. He has HUGE expectations for his students to interpret the poems the way HE DOES. He is the toughest grader that my peers and I have ever had at UVic. He continuously says our work lacks depth without any explanation. Do not take his class!!
This class definitely required my full attention and participation. Dr. Carson is a great lecturer and provides great feedback if you see him in office hours.
Carson is probably the most delusional professor I have ever met. He can't even recall the things he says in class and goes on these tangents that have nothing to do with the material. I would advise EVERYONE to stay away from his classes as he will just give you a bad mark and won't explain why its bad.
Extremely hard grader, like everyone else says, he only wants his interpretations no one else's. He is extremely vague in both his assignments and feedback. Unhelpful when trying to figure out if your doing anything right.
Nice guy and makes some funny jokes. Thats the only good things about this course though. All of the subjects were very vague and boring and he only wanted students to write about what his thoughts were. As far as feedback goes, he is a very harsh marker and will not given any helpful feedback. I would even say he is mean and rude to students.
For this course, you definitely have to show up to every class. Professor Carson seems to only accept essays based on his ideas rather than original thought; there were times where I wrote word for word what he said during class "discussions". His feedback is unhelpful and it doesn't help you identify areas that you can improve on.
If you go into his class with the intention of portraying your own ideas, dont! If you want to do well just repeat his words back to him in the form of a 2 page analysis. Id advise avoiding him at all costs. He is a nice dude though.
He was a funny guy who gave interesting lectures but I honestly have no clue what he was looking for in the required papers. I would write original ideas and he would somewhat rudely explain his dislike for my paper without any real feedback. I tried many different tactics to try and find what he was looking for but nothing ever satisfied him.
Horrible professor. He marks very unreasonably with very little feedback on how to improve. It did not seem like he wanted his students to succeed at all. I took the class for an easy A because I have been successful in English at UVIC in the past, however taking this class was a big mistake. Would not recommend at all!!
Avoid Professor Carson at all costs! Extremely tough grader and provided very little feedback which made it hard to improve from previous assignments. He expected his words and ideas to be parroted back to him or you would do poorly on the assignment. He also would reject students ideas and contributions in lecture discouraging class discussions.
Professor Carson is a very hard marker and doesn't provide any helpful feedback on assignments. As per the rest of the reviews, I would avoid his class at all costs.
I really enjoyed Luke's class! His lectures are engaging and his appreciation for the texts is apparent. He expects his students to really interact with the material in a meaningful way. He is a tough grader but I would recommend going to talk to him during office hours as he gives really good feedback! He is also kind of hilarious.
Used my own ideas in the essays and did just fine (pretty sure "parroting" ideas from class would have led to a lower grade). Carson gives interesting, funny lectures & is helpful during office hours. Light reading load. Class is not hard to pass, but not an easy A and requires lots of literary analysis, so keep that in mind for your GPA.
Sounds like a bunch of you finally ran into someone who grades honestly and cant take it. Dr. Carson demands good work and his course was inspiring. His grading gave me lots of feedback and I learned so much from his comments. If you want to learn something instead of getting a pat on the head for showing up, then Dr. Carson's classes are the best
"Cool Hand" Luke Carson is the bomb. The Governor wants to know what your crappy reading is doing in his essay. And if any man on earth can eat fifty eggs Dr Luke is him.
