He is the best professor i meet in sfu. He is very nice and warmhearted and he is likely to give u the advice on your assignment, paper, and exam. His exam is not difficult, if you read text and kown the basic items, you will get a good mark....
Dr. Clossey is an excellent prof. His enthusiasm in unmatched in SFU. Assignments are fun and thoughtfully marked.
He is a nice & helpful guy. BUT, he is a VERY HARD MARKER. If u can't get A in english course then DO NOT take him. PLUS, u have to expect a VERY heavy course load. BESIDES, he just speaks out every point in class, non-stop!! No Lecture notes. Only notes given are the TITLES of what he's gonna say.
Teacher is probably the most helpful in the department. Really cares about students and wants people to understand what he's teaching. Keep in mind though, that he has very high expectations for your written work - I wouldn't bother trying his courses if you can't write really well.
He rocks. Probably now, my favourite class ever.
He is a great prof. Knows a lot about what he's teaching. He is a tough marker...but he explains assignments really well. His lectures are a bit hard to follow..(wright lots of notes)but he's a cutie so that makes up for it.
His class is fun and he is a really funny guy.
Excellent prof! Passionate about the subject and teaches it extremely well. Gives clear and concise instructions for assigments. One of the most approachable profs out there. He's a pretty hard marker though, grammer and structure count for a LOT of marks. & be prepared for a tonne of reading/week.
AWESOME prof! Makes the class truly engaging and worthwhile of attending. Is super enthusiastic and helpful both in-class and one on one. Responds to emails promptly and gives very detailed explanations and overall tries to help you as much as he could. Overall super enjoyable class - highly recommended!
An excellent Prof I have ever met ! He is so helpful and nice ~ always have fun in his class ~ I become love History after I attended in his class ! Highly recommand !
Highly recommend taking any course Clossey offers, he is the best teacher in the HIST hands down. As for a marker, he is definately not a hard marker, just make sure someone proof reads your work. He's sticky about English. Very sympathetic to students, cares about his class something you don't see up at SFU in any department.
He's gotta be the best prof. EVER! I looked forward to going to his classes. Yes, they are THAT interesting! He really cares about his students and tries to help them in any way he can. His courses also make you think. Take his courses! You will walk away having learned a lot.
Very energetic teacher, U'll need to get lots of clarity on assignments, expects almost flawless grammar on assignments, a really good tutorial leader, expects lots of participation from students, lectures are somewhat disorganized but interesting, makes for difficult note taking. Course texts and readings were not well matched with his lectures.
Incapable of delivering a coherent lecture, or responding intelligently to a question - or justifying anything he says. This doesn't stop him from imposing half-witted "standards" in assignments. How does SFU hire someone like this for tenure ??!
A wonderful professor. He made an abundance of difficult course content extremely digestible. Enthusiastic & high energy, helpful & fair. His marking scheme & expectations are not ambiguous or ridiculous - you just have to adjust to them.
Nobody can be 100% sure of historical events and prof. Clossey allows students to keep an open mind about history. My interest in this course was zip before I took it but soon enough I found myself right in the mix. Easy going tutorial interaction and interesting lectures. Finally a course for the sake of the course and not just prereq.
Clossey is the most charismatic professor I've had. He will take this bland subject of dates and events and turn it into a thought-engaging and interesting endeavour. Be prepared to speak up in tutorials, however; he is genuinely interested in what students have to say. Some might find analyzing and interpreting the material somwhat difficult.
Wonderful interesting guy. Great lectures. Really wants to hear from students. Highly recommended.
Excellent prof; except he is also a mathematician and can be extremely crafty with overall grading- is not clear about his overall marking scheme. You might get a good mark in something, but if he suspects you are not working hard enough he will figure out a way to adjust your grade...
Awesome prof, taken 3 classes with him and enjoyed them all. Lectures move very fast, but it's like watching a comedy routine. Some find marking hard, but I found it fair.
The funniest prof I've ever had! He's really nice and a great teacher. He's extremely intelligent, but hard marker. Some may think he is fair, but as a B average student, I dropped down to a C/C+ in his class. I really didn't like the way tutorials were held. He wants students to talk amongst themselves; he basically just watches.
Amazing prof, highly entertaining and open to new ideas
so cute...so funny & entertaining.. Some may find him a hard marker, but he is fair-he will teach you to write better which will come handy in other classes. Excellent lectures-only useful info. Incredibly helpful and kind. And did I mention cute and funny?
Clossey is a downright wonderful human being. He will help out anyone who asks and seems to really care about his students. Be prepared to work hard in his classes (lots of reading!). He is definitely not an easy marker, but it is worth the effort! I would take any class he was teaching because he manages to make them fun and interesting!
Clossey is a really good teacher. For a first year his class can be overwhelming, but go and see him, he is always there to help. His quizes are insane, but thats what makes them fun. I really like the way he lets you talk in tutorial, I find it gets ideas flowing. An overall great teacher.
Prof. Closseys lectures are interesting and more or less engaging, but his quizzes and tests are completely unreasonable. I find myself loving the class, even though I've failed almost every quiz
So attractive, could be distracting but overall a really good professor, funny and engaging, hard quizzes though, but the only lecture i actually like going to
Clossey is a really nice guy, he's funny and makes lectures entertaining and fun, however lots of readings and hard quizes. Have to put in a lot of work to do well in this course, so don't slack.
loved that class!
Okay prof, with some humour. I took His 254 - Chinese history before 1800 - with him in the 2007 winter semester. His teaching style and notes are very unorganized, plus he doesn't curve, it is somewhat difficult to get a good grade i.e. above 80 (A-). Nevertheless, he is an okay prof.
Very dynamic prof. Great sense of humour. Lectures were always engaging. Reading load was tipping on excessive; quizzes absolutely kicked my ass. I loved the material and the way Clossey presented it but he made it an incredible struggle to get a good grade in this course.
Prof knew how to keep lecture interesting and the class was fun but a lot to taken. He has a good sense of humor and is clearly passionate about what he lectures on. Quiz can be hard but not impossible. Overall an amazing class
Interesting prof... far too much material to cover for one semester though. Quizzes were brutal and heavily weighted... they kicked my ass. Very picky on essays. I'm a scholarship student and ended up with a C+ on one of the essays. Very well versed in Christian history.
loving the class.... mmmmm? hehehe
His quizzes are really hard but he is obviously passionate about his work. He could stop saying 'eh' three times a minute.
He's a really good teacher, and obviously passionate about the material. His classes are highly entertaining. His quizzes are very hard, make sure you read the texts VERY closely.
lectures very interesting, text feels useless, and often skips large important historical events preferring to focus on minute details. quizzes terrible and my TA was extremely terrible.
An excellent lecturer who clearly makes an effort to convey the course content clearly. This is a very valuable course for humanities and social science students who want to develop a better understanding of the modern world. There is a LOT of reading, but if you put the time in this is a very rewarding course, regardless of your major.
One of the best profs I have ever had. A terrific teacher with an awesome sense of humour. He puts in a lot of effort in meeting his students eye to eye, and he's always willing to help, no matter how obscure your problem may be. I highly recommend him for any level, but take an upper level course with him if you can - a truly rewarding experience.
CLOSSEY IS AWESOME - definitely one of my fave professors and if you take a class with him, you`ll know why. He is obviously very experienced and passionate about what he teaches and is very open to suggestions and ideas. The class itself is a LOT of work and the quizzes can be very hard if you don`t study for them properly. I`m glad I took this!!!
Good lectures and very interesting prof with good sense of humour. be prepared to read read and read some more from textbook and online sources. no mid-term and 4 quizzes throughout (study from lecture notes and ur readings). 8 page term paper is doable. the TA marked easy.
Great class! I reccommend taking this class with him. He's a great instructor.
Very funny professor. hes quizes are random but make sure u read the online readings so you know the places on the map. too much readings(textbook + online sources). read smartly! the TA was...umm..very nice and willing to help but the tutorial itself is very very boring and awkward.
Clossey is an awesome prof with a sense of humor that makes class enjoyable. His quizzes are hard but do-able if you study the right material. Lots of reading but it all ties in together during the final exam. I'd definitely recommend this course if he was teaching it
Awesome Prof! I loved this class, I still miss this class. Lots of readings and you have to put an effort in or your not going to pass. But an awedome class
Clossey is very enthusiastic about History and makes every class interesting, encourages questions and adds humour to the lectures. His quizzes are really hard (study what you think is the most irrelevant and you will be okay). Lots of reading as well. But overall an interesting class!
An excellent, engaging and hilarious prof; the course is demanding, but both the general world knowledge gained and the opportunity of having Clossey as a prof make it a very rewarding experience.
Professor has a great sense of humor that engages you in lectures. I never found myself dozing off in any of his lectures. Quizzes are difficult and often ask questions about what you thought were trivial facts. Look over the Chronology sections of the text book. Knowledge gained from this class is invaluable for any beginner history student.
While this course was at times challenging, I always found the material covered very interesting (However, he tends not to talk a lot about the textbook material in lecture). He his humour & enthusiasm grabs your attention &keeping it throughout lecture. The quizzes are random, but it's possible to do well on the essay & final if you put in effort
Seems like a nice funny guy, but he must have a personal vendetta against me. I felt I was cheated out of a better grade. Only a pro-Christian would enjoy this course centred on Jesus. Lots of Christian terminology to understand. Too many readings. Be prepared to work for a decent grade. Classmates made the course at least tolerable. Stay far away.
Really knows the content. Nvr refers to textbook in lecture. ADD during lectures and jumps from topic to topic. Quizzes are difficult since they're from the text, lecture, and sources; pay attention to the smallest details! WAY too much readings; usually 40+ pages and at least 3 source documents per week. Not the best prof out there, but he's okay.
You must do the readings to do well in this class. The quizzes are difficult, make sure you know major events and people and the century in which they occurred. The tutorial was okay, the TA marked stupidly on the term paper.
If you?re wondering why there are so many stooped and gray haired students around campus it?s from 130 quizzes. Basically this professor is like Edward Cullen; everything about him makes you want to like him, but his class will kill you. The lectures are entertaining and readings interesting, but the amount of information will leave you dizzy. Othe
I loved history coming into this class, and i am leaving it with hatred. His lectures are entertaining, but his quizzes are extremely difficult and unfair. He tells you to focus on main topics, but they are never on the quiz. WAAAAAY too much readings (textbook&source readings). Too difficult for a first year course. Don't waste your time with him!
Very hipsterish prof, but also really good. Enthusiastic, conscientious, and non-judgy. Lots of comments on assignments, good class structure, and marks get progressively higher throughout the semester (because you've improved? or to give that illusion...) The class was about teaching world history so, challenging, but still worth taking.
Luke Clossey is a GREAT professor. His quizzes are a little obscure but it only ensures that you know the material well. He quizzes on time periods, people/places/terminology, as well as gives essays. These things ensure that you have a comprehensive knowledge of the material. Don't take him if you are looking to coast through a class. Enjoyable.
Good prof but hard quizzes and papers. But very interesting. Would defiantly take him again
obscure quizzes, but not that bad if you read the chapters. Good lectures and interesting material. Kind of a weird guy but overall I would recommend him.
Clossey is pretty good when it comes to lectures. Explains things well and can be pretty entertaining. When it comes to tests though, watch out. You pretty much have to memorize every person even mentioned in passing for the last month or so, and know every little, out of the way country on any map. Tests kill an otherwise decent class
Clossey is all about the quizzes, which are based on lecture, which makes it surprising that the final exam was based almost entirely on readings, and not even the ones mentioned in class. One of the terms we had to identify was mentioned in passing in lecture! Very good lectures, but you can get the same info from Crash Course World History.
Overall, the class is very interesting, but quizzes are extremely difficult and you never know what to study. Lecture material rarely corresponded with the textbook, don't buy it its a waste of money basically. I ended up doing pretty well overall, but the amount of work I put in for what I thought would be a GPA boosting class isn't worth it.
Professor Clossey is a great teacher. Very animatedexcited about history which makes his lectures quite interesting. His quizzes are not exactly easy, but if you actually study you will do fine. He can also be very accommodating when it comes to his marking, plus he leaves very good feedback. Personally I liked Clossey more than I liked his class!
This class made me reconsider my History minor. Don't take this class. I am a 3.2 student and failed all of the quizzes which are worth %25 of the grade. The quizzes are literally the most random parts of the lecture he metioned for 30 secs. Don't learn the main concepts, its a waste of time. Simply scan the readings for people/places and memorize.
Lectures can be engaging, but have little to do with assigned texts. Must know geography for quizzes, which are pretty difficult. A ton of course material that consists of lots of randomly specific details. Final exam and essay assignment expects a lot especially for a first year course. You can do well but it requires a ton of work.
The quizzes were unreasonably difficult despite being worth a large part of your grade. The primary source readings were incredibly dull. Lectures seemed to jump around more than they should. The final was completely fair but it's only 30% of your grade. Clossey is a good guy but this course isn't worth taking if you can avoid it.
Clossey was an amazing professor! Personally, I have little interest in religious - especially Christian - history, but his lectures really changed my perspective on the subject. His quizzes were tough, but if you study, read, and take notes, you will definitely do well. I would totally take another class with him!
One of the worst professors I ever had. He insisted on an entirely different essay format from any other prof in the History department. He weighted sentence structure as heavily as content in his marking scheme and never gave clear constructive criticism as to how to improve. His lectures were interesting however they were not helpful for tests.
One of the best teachers i've seen in my life. He is very passionate and knows his things well. He somehow makes the lectures interesting. But, the amount of reading is basically impossible as you need to reed 40 pages and 3 sources every week. So I just study by learning the lecture notes. It makes up 50% or so of the quiz.I skim the textbook
Very passionate prof who knows what he is talking about and had his own opinion on everything. Had him as an 8am lecture and he still kept me engaged the whole class. he is really enthusiastic and informative. responds to emails quickly. tests are difficult and you need to do ALL the readings and go to ALL the lectures to succeed. worth it
Lectures and textbook is not related. He likes to ramble about topics and go on bizarre tangents. Often very boring and quite confusing lectures. The textbook is awfully boring and provides not a lot of interesting information. The quizzes are difficult and poorly coordinated with the material presented. Not a bad guy, not good at teaching.
Took his class just for fun and knowledge, and was overloaded with reading material. There was average 200 pages per week to read. He also gives quizzes every now and then which are pretty hard and ask specific things while the lectures are vague. His notes are not online so do attend the class. Hope for a good TA cause they make a huge difference.
I really enjoyed his lectures, I took this class as an elective and the material was really interesting . Its pretty fast paced and the tests arent easy but if you copy down his notes and listen in lecture its not hard to study for the tests .. the reading I must say was a lot and didnt have anything to do with lecture. Interesting stuff though
You will read hundreds of years of history across the entire globe for each lecture. Quizzes will ask you either dates, significance or geography. It becomes very difficult to remember all three of those aspects for thousands of years of history across the entire world. The professor is very charming but this class is better suited as a 400 level.
Amazing professor. Very knowledgeable and passionate. Would take him again. His essays and quizzes are fair, and the students who have posted saying they are not did not study enough. I took a 400 level class with him, and was pleasantly surprised with his teaching skills versus other professors. He truly cares about what he teaches.
Prof. Clossey makes his course really interesting to learn about. Although his lectures are all over the place and he uses bizarre tangents to deliver it, his class is quite enjoyable to take. The textbook isn't always necessary though it will help. Pay attention in class, he marks decently tough.
Enthusiastic teacher but this is too hard for a first year class. Most students were higher level and had previous knowledge & made it hard for first years to participate or understand what is being taught. Course is graded pass-fail on 4 papers and tutorial workshops did not help to prepare. No chance to redeem. Participation is big part of grade.
The grading system is awful, it's just a bunch of essays which are all pass/fail. It's also very hard to do well on them because the instructions are very unclear and confusing. Subject material is interesting but the lectures are full of tangents and hard to follow. Tutorials are a waste of time. Dropped this course
By far the worst prof I've had at SFU. While his lectures are decent and engaging, they provide no value. The course is not a history course but rather a writing course. You can easily fail the class even if you understood all the course materials. On the other hand you could also pass without reading/learning a single thing if you can write.
Your entire success in the course is based on 4 assignments of increasing difficulty. The marking is very picky and even the smallest error, like a single run-on sentence, can result in a fail. The professor himself is great and responds relatively quickly, however the marking scheme is awful.
Grading scheme is atrocious and sets you up for failure good guy though. Wish I had dropped the course, was looking forward to global history but this class definitely ruined that. Tutorials are a complete waste of time as well, he needs to revamp the entire class for sure. Otherwise, good prof!
Where to start, Dr. Clossey is a nice guy, but he has no idea how to teach. This first year class was much better suited for third or fourth year students. All reading is primary sources, if you don't already have a good sense of history you will be completely lost. I learned nothing and was consistently frustrated with his grading criteria.
Has some good stuff to say, which made the lectures quite interesting. However, this grading scheme is probably the worst thing I've ever seen. There is WAY too much emphasis on precision for the 4 papers, which are graded pass/fail. I was told my paper was "excellent," but failed because of formatting errors. It's just too strict for 1st yr class.
avoid class at all costs. Luke is a nice guy but an extremely lazy prof. The TA's were absolutely useless. Assignments do not correlate to the course content whatsoever. The grading system makes it impossible to do well in the course.
the organization and layout of this course is awful. grading is unfair and terrible. other SFU staff told someone that an assignment we have to do should only be done while getting our masters, not a level 100 assignment. impossible to do well in this class just avoid it, the TA's are useless too
Worst experience I've had at SFU. Makes me wonder why there's even a tuition for this class. I would avoid at all costs.
There are no quizzes, midterms, and there is no final. Grade is based on the number of assignments passed and participation.
At first, I thought his grading criteria to be quite unfair (which it kind of is), but if you follow the guidelines to a T, you'll have no problem doing well on the papers. Lectures are quite interesting, and he is an emphatic speaker. Just don't take a class with him if you aren't a strong writer, as his rubric heavily chastises poor writing.
Great prof if you are someone who can learn on their own as well as from others. Do not expect this professor to give you the answers. This applies to lower and upper div classes. He allows you freedom to create but make sure to be concise in writing. If you are sloppy in your writing you will be punished. This includes missing minor punctuation.
- Very cool course if you like the more general kind of history. - You hardly saw the professor since the class is just one tutorial a week - Not too much course material or work - Relatively easy to get a good grade if you follow all the instructions. - Kinda relies on having a good TA though...
Dr. Clossey is a solid teacher. In seminars he lets the conversation develop mostly unguided, which is not necessarily bad. He doesn't give conclusive answers or say "we should talk about this", instead, he responds with questions and lets us work through it, or not depending on how the discussion shifts. I'd recommend him for history majors.
Luke Clossey is a great prof! I took his HIST130, and it was very easy for me to get a B without much effort. I showed up to the tutorials and participated; I would recommend preparing just a little bit so you can make sure you get participation marks. No midterms and no finals, all you need to do are six intakes (essays), which were fairly easy.
This class was super easy, I only showed up to 2 lectures and got a B, as all the assignment materials are based on what we talk about in tutorial. There is no tests. That being said, it's important to show up to tutorial and participate as it's worth a good percentage of your grade. Content was super interesting and would 100% take again.
Great teacher, can tell he loves history. Records his lectures so don't have to attend. Tuts have some participation marks.
Dr. Clossey's class was one I quite enjoyed. His lectures are all over the place but quite entertaining, and I found the material covered in class and tutorial to be diverse and interesting. Do be warned, getting above a B+ is going to be challenging with how the assignments are structured, however, anything below an A- is extremely easy to get
Very passionate and puts a lot of effort into the lectures. The assignments have clear grading criteria and it's easy to pass the class with a high grade as long as you do your assignments and show up to tutorial and participate in group discussions. Lots of tutorial readings, a new one each week, can vary between 10-30ish pages.
One of the best history professors out there. He has really engaging and fun lectures, intriguing readings, and excellent assignments and grading. I recommend taking his classes.
Great professor, really shows that he cares about the subject material. Course uses an alternative grading system that allows you to know what your grade will be. Also NO TESTS AT ALL, grades are based on participation in tutorials and assignments. He's super easy to reach outside of class. Good elective for non history students
Very fun! Has great energy on a Monday, and the lack of quizzes/exams was a lifesaver. Is enthusiastic about helping with assignments and provides tons of valuable feedback. However, do NOT take this class if you're bad at/don't like writing. It is writing assignment-heavy, and minor mistakes will hurt your grade. Highly recommend HIST130!
Clossey is a good prof and I think overall Hist 130 is a great class to take as an elective. The class has no exams, with a point system grading format. Lectures are recorded, while tutorials count towards participation points and overall grade. It's really citation-heavy and you really need to make sure you pass your assignments to do well.
My experience - Great prof overall, would love to have him again for another course - Lots of online weekly course readings, but manageable - Lectures were informative and engaging (they were also recorded and you could attend via zoom) - Unique points-based grading system involving various written assignments.
