The tests used to be online, then he found out that a student was googling the answers, so without changing them at all, he put them in the testing center. The average grade on the test would be a C- and he wouldn't curve the tests because according to him, tests should be like the SATs: impossible to get a 100, and on material you've never seen.

everyone is right, tests are hard, impossible to know what is on the test, but most of the facts are in the textbook and what he emphasizes in class. To do well take notes in lecture and while reading the textbook. If you don't read the text, or read it casually expect a C (or lower). It is possible to do well, you just need to study (hard).

Makes you read the entire textbook. Said the tests we needed to study the terms in the textbook, but were then many questions not about those terms. Isn't very clear on what you need to know for tests. Other than that all you do is write concert reports for 4 concerts, which isn't bad.

Dr. Howard is probably overqualified for teaching such basic GE courses. That knowledge, combined with his wit, make lectures very entertaining. Prof Howard was hilarious, his lectures are not necessary but I go because they are hilarious and interesting. You are given everything you need to get a 100 on all the tests, easily the easiest class I have taken, but also one of the most interesting. He is also very spiritual and sweet and genuinely one of the nicest people you will meet

Very easy class, yet enjoyable and engaging. Wants students to succeed. Mainly graded by the ID and online exams, but they are straightforward. One of the most popular professors at BYU, so get ready for large lectures and long waitlists for the class.

Dr. Howard is amazing! His lectures are so fun and he is really smart. The class isn't too hard, as long as you don't try to cram at the end, because you have to memorize a lot for the ID exams. If you're taking MUSIC 202, definitely take it from Dr. Howard.

Fairly easy class. Definitely still have to study and although attendance is not mandatory, I definitely recommend going. For some reason I didn't realize that there was literature and art also in the course, not just music. Anyway, I learned a lot and had fun doing it!

Prof Howard is awesome. His lectures are fun and engaging and there was rarely a dull moment. His class is very test heavy though. 70% of your grade is all tests but he will prepare you well for them. Also, the final is the same questions from the previous midterms and he opens the midterms so you can study them before the final. Minimal homework.

Prof Howard is the funniest professor I've had at BYU! Such a kind, caring man and SO knowledgeable about everything art, literature, and music related. He explains things very clearly and welcomes questions. His passion is contagious - he even managed to make opera interesting. If you're taking Music 202, take it from him!!

While the lectures are super entertaining and his passion for music and the arts is contagious, the class is too easy. He gave us the answers to tests. The seven quizzes weren't due until the end. They were open for infinite submissions and the right answer was highlighted after the first attempt. Little to no required effort = little learning.

Learned a lot in lectures and the class was very manageable. His in-class ID exam #2 was pretty challenging and could be tricky if you weren't prepared, so make sure you know his expectations for it well in advance. However, they may be changing the organization of the class soon so be sure to double check that before signing up for the class.

EASIEST GE CREDIT! To be fair, I took this over spring semester, but Professor Howard wanted everyone to end with an A. We took the tests as a class so the only thing we were really graded on was one essay (which is basically completion). He wants his students to succeed. He's also really funny and makes history really entertaining.

Prof. Howard is a very easy A. My complaint is that four weeks in, 9/10 lecture hours have been ENTIRELY devoted to black-specific racism. No acknowledgments of other races. This has been really frustrating for me and not what I was expecting for a music culture class. If I wanted to learn more about black racism, I would've taken SOC 112.

I loved Pro. Howard. I took this class to cover my civ two credit; it was the easiest class ever. If you participate, you get a good grade. There was a midterm in this class, but it was just a super easy paper. There are long readings, but that's it. No final, it is a good class.

This class was so different than Music 201 (which I also took from Howard). It was more about cultural appropriation. I took the 3 hr night section, and Dr. Howard always let us out early which was amazing. The assignments, midterm, and final were all easy (no tests, just short projects), and I walked away more informed about culture and music.

Your grade is primarily based on attendance (at least it was for the night section), so make sure you will be able to attend most lectures. Dr. Howard was accommodating when I had a difficult situation and you can tell he's very passionate about the subject material. He's also upfront when he was teaching a subject that's not his area of expertise.

The 202 coursework is completely new and different starting this semester. Still an amazing class with a bit of HW, but with more interesting topics like pop, classical music, and modern music. If you turn in your work and do it it's a very manageable A. He covers a lot of Asian and Hispanic cultures so IDK what the black racism review is about.

Solid professor. His lectures cover everything that is on the tests. Homework assignments are really easy. Lectures were very interesting. Only reason I don't give him a 5 is he is adamant on not putting his slides online. You'll need to take pretty detailed notes on all of his lectures to do well on tests

If you're looking for an easy civ 2 class so you can graduate, take this class! Super easy A, just do the assignments and go to class (attendance 50% of grade). Small assignments, no tests, easy final project. Class content was a bunch of pointless political propaganda, and I didn't learn much, so overall didn't love the class. But hey, easy A.

TAKE THIS CLASS. I took it for two of GEs and I plan on taking MUS 201 with him. He is such an easy grader and I've never had an easier class before. Not only that, but I really really enjoyed all the hw and assignments and I know nothing about classical music. I'm here to help you out, take this class for your GE.

I think this class was genuinely one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. All of the assignments were based on completion. If you did it, you got credit. Professor Howard is kind and respectful. The assignments were creative and fun. Attendance was 50% of the grade, but I felt it was extremely reasonable for how easy it was.

Sure, it's a GE. Two in fact. I take classes to learn and I found myself disappointed in this class. I don't feel as if it deeply instructed me in arts or civilization. Dr. Howard's enthusiasm was great, but it was always way over my head and he seemed to suppress it to focus on minority music. It left me empty, wanting more.

Professor Howard is truly the best professor I've had here at BYU. He is so inspirational and so funny! His philosophy of GE's makes his class actually enjoyable and so neat to learn from him! His accent alone also makes the class so much fun. He has such a neat perspective on life and art and music, if you can snag a spot in his class, KEEP IT!

Not a particularly interesting class; it's supposed to be analyzing music since 1720, but was actually only about exploring racism, cultural appropriation, and misogyny through a musical lens. It's much more of a sociology class than it is a music class. That being said, it is the easiest class you'll ever take, and he usually ends class early.
