He is really horrible teacher. Can't teach at all. His class is theory more than anything. The HW is workable but nothing compared to the tests which are half problems half proofs. He is also very full of himself. I once spent 5 mins asking for him to work out a problem on the board, he kept refusing. Please take someone else.
Avoid at ALL costs! 350 characters are not enough for me to convey to you how terrible his class is and how unhelpful, misleading, and at times just down right ridiculous he can be. Does not teach, explain, or answer questions well. Gives unreasonably difficult tests. Does not stick to his word about grading. Unbelievable amount of HW.Stay away!
His class is very difficult. Our class average on the first test was a 64, after the curve. You will spend 10 hours on the homework (which is required) every week. He goes over few examples in class save for the theorems and proofs. Also, the questions on the tests are never similar to the ones from homework and are theory more than application.
Definitely knows linear algebra. Definitely doesn't know how to teach it. The subject itself is hard enough wout a nitpicky teacher who wants every answer 100% his way. Went back and forth from diff tutors to his office & no tutor I found understood what kind of answer he was looking for. Gives practice tests that are nothing like the tests.
Difficult. Tests and lectures focused on proof and theory. For most majors (engineering specifically), LA is a tool to solve problems. The 'why' is less important than the 'how' unless you're a math major. Assignments were needlessly long with redundant problems. Cannot be done the night before. Curved and gave extra credit at the end.
He's a really nice guy and he loves what he's doing. If you take the time to study outside of class you'll be fine. I personally did not take this class as serious as I should have so I didn't do to well. He's helpful in office hours though. He assigns homework every week so be prepared for that.
Lectures weren't the most exciting but were enjoyable at times. Assigns lots of homework from the textbook; tons of helpful resources are to be found. Easy/fun semester project to help boost your grade. Know definitions well before taking the tests. He likes to test you on interesting things you haven't directly seen before.
Dr. Oeding is a really cool dude. He occasionally has a hard time proving the Calc 3 topics/theorems without using higher level math but his lectures are still understandable. DO THE HOMEWORK. It supplements his lectures and prepares you for the tests (which he grades very graciously). He's also very accessible, and easy to work with.
Dr. Oeding is a great professor. Do the work and put the time in. He'll answer any questions you have. Sometimes, he explains things with material from upper level courses but just go with it and be honest with him, he's great. Would take for every math if I could.
Dr. Oeding is a great professor! Show up and pay attention and if you need extra help go to office hours. Also, do the homework. I learned a lot.
Good Professor overall! He is very good at describing practical applications for topics. Go to class and pay attention and you should do fine. Focuses a little to much on theory, in my opinion, but not so much that it ruins the class. Gives fairly difficult tests. Problems aren't really that hard, but he doesn't give enough time on the tests.
Oeding is such a good teacher. He tests a lot on theory. You have to know both purpose and application. The grade I got was the one I deserved. Put the work in. He's great. Go to office hours.
Dr. Oeding is a great professor and is rewarding of effort. He's readily accessible and eager to help. Make the most of this class because it is a genuine opportunity to learn something. That said, it was not easy. It was, however, rewarding.
Luke Oeding is a very caring and diligent teacher. His lectures include helpful real-world applications and examples. He is very conceptual and likes to show the proofs of theorems, which I feel adds to the depth of understanding of the concepts presented.
He does a decent job at explaining some things, but he goes so fast that you are just writing, not having time to think about what he's saying. It is normal in an hour to have 5 pages of notes. His tests are nearly impossible, although he does curve them. 2 tests and final makes up nearly your whole grade. Lots of theory instead of examples.
The beginning of the class was pretty easy, but the last half was extremely difficult. Homework isn't graded but it helps a lot with understanding the material and for the weekly quizzes. The quizzes were simple. Take advantage and do well on the first test. Careful not to fall behind on homework. Overall hard class, but really good professor!
Easily the worst professor in my time at Auburn. 1. Doesn't teach the class. Asks you to read the textbook instead. In class we do pointless exercises that has nothing to do with what we're graded on. 2. When he does teach material not in the book, he provides no way to review the material outside of class. 3. Makes tests way harder than necessary
This was my second time taking Oeding. Very very theory based. If you stay in it & try your best to get a grasp on concepts, you'll be okay. Read the book. Go to office hours. Ask questions. Don't give up halfway through the semester when everyone else does.
Lectures move so fast it's not worth writing down. He teaches only in proofs and why the theory works, which is not needed for undergraduate courses. He expects the knowledge of a graduate math student in every one of his courses. Tests focused on theories as well. Huge curves though which allowed several to make decent grades.
Wouldnt recommend taking him anytime, but especially not during a global pandemic. Moves so fast its impossible to take notes and understand what youre doing. Gives very little insight to what will be important for exams. Will not help you out if you are close to the next letter grade. Dont do it
The lectures are taught very quickly and in proofs. It's not worth writing down the notes since they were mainly theoretical and difficult to understand. The grading was very specific for the tests with honest feedback about what was missed. I used khan academy to get through this class. Do not recommend taking this professor.
His teaching style is very unorganized. If a proof is not written the way he would write it, expect to be counted off. It's a very theoretical class with little leeway in how the proofs are graded.
Oeding is so difficult for no reason. The homework consists of questions that he never explained or went over how to do. He talks very fast and doesn't explain where he gets his numbers from. He also goes on random tangents for about 10-15 min where you have no idea what he's talking about and is hard to tell what will and will not be on the test.
Dr. Oeding clearly cares very much about making sure students succeed in the Calc II as well as future courses. He explains a wide variety of problems from each unit in class and works through them. I will warn that sometimes his lectures can get hard to follow and he strays from the topic at hand, but overall, he did a good job.
I don't recommend taking this professor for calculus 2. He doesn't upload any lectures in canvas, also no study guide is given. And attendance is not required, but he takes attendance by iclicker for bonus points. At last, no partial credit is given, compared to other professors, he doesn't give the students partial credit well.
I found this class to be very hard, lectures were difficult to understand, and tests were unbelievably hard compared to homework and outside resources. I was not able to comprehend anything from the lecture, lecture material is gone through very fast, and moves at the speed of light.
Lectures: confusing & unorganized (9%)Homework: easy but requires a calculator, which isnt allowed in class (9%)Quizzes(8): unlike homework; 1-2 questions; time limit is 5-30 min depending on TA (60%)Exams(3): 8 difficult questions (many are multi-step) (22%)Final: easier than his exams but difficult Partial Credit;Scaling;Bonuses: little to none
Dr Oeding was very knowledgeable about every topic he taught, however his lectures were almost impossible to follow. He would often jump around from topic to topic and rarely explained the why behind the math he was doing. His 3 exams were also very hard and each counted for 20% of the overall grade. Be prepared to learn a lot of this class alone
Luke Oeding is one of the worst professors I've ever taken in my college career. His lectures about neural networks are very confusing and have no clear connection to the homework assignments he puts out. At least, he should put some problems for us to do so that we can practice on his exams. I would say more but word count. Please don't take him.
He barely teaches example problems and focuses on proofs and theoretical stuff. I had to teach myself everything for the homework, and it still didn't matter because the tests aren't even on those subjects. He doesn't explain things and just writes the work down. Absolutely do not take this professor if you have the choice.
Hilarious? Hilariously bad. He recommended reading the textbook, and then made 1/3 of the test based on neural networks, something barely covered, and not present in the book/hw. Assigns homework due 3x per week, including game days. My advice goes in this order: 1. Get a different professor 2. Drop class 3. Switch majors 4. Study Neural Networks
When it comes to this professor, he is a generational talent of being one of the worst professors at this university. He cannot teach the class any topic that is seen on the quizzes or tests, and fails to teach the material during class. This class is a joke
Expect to learn a lot from textbooks, even when lectures are mandatory. I do not recommend him.
This man is genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. He barely makes any sense during his lectures, you can teach yourself from doing the homework assignments but his exams are nothing like the homework. Exams are entirely theory based with no math problems and just asks to draw 5 neural networks (barely covered in class/not in the textbook)
His lectures are so hard to follow, and he loves to talk about application of the math before you understand the math itself. Rough class overall. Taught myself completely from the textbook, except the random applications he likes to talk about (and test on) that are not in the textbook.
Avoid if possible. He only teaches with proofs and theorems. He jumps from topic to topic and doesn't really hammer down on anything. He teaches from the angle of computers and not geometry, which is fine except he teaches and tests on things not present in the textbook or curriculum.
if you're taking this class to learn linear algebra, no you're not!
I have been a successful student at Auburn so far, but Luke Oeding makes Linear algebra way more difficult than it needs to be. He is legitimately the worst professor I have ever had and would highly recommend taking anyone else other than him. I'm not usually one to complain about a teacher but this guy is terrible.
What a joke of a professor. He might be nice as a person, but as a professor he is hands-down one of the worst professors I've had the pleasure of taking a class with. His exams aren't comprehensive, they're either focused on 2 sections that you covered 2 days before the exam, or on lessons that don't exist in your textbook. Don't take him.
Dr. Luke Oeding, your lectures are agony, your assignments, pure torture. Each equation is a dagger, every proof, a prison. You've turned math into a cruel labyrinth, watching us suffer with cold indifference. There is no escape from this torment. THERE IS NO ESCAPE. (P.S. Study Neural Networks)
If you're a masochist, take his class. The amount of stress from studying I've endured just to fail his exams was blissful. Make sure you don't think about what's going to be covered on the exam, but what ISN'T going to be covered. You can study an entire chapter and a half and not have any problems from it pop up on the exam.
Topics in Linear Algebra? More like Topics in Graduate-Level courses. If you're taking this class without a doctorate degree in mathematics, good luck trying to get anything above a C. Teaches more about "theorems" of linear algebra instead of practicality. I think he just forgets that our GPA actually matters in college.
Don't be fooled by the 4-5 point reviews. All of those are from pre-2017. What's important that is since 2022, his rating on average has been at 1-2 points. If you're taking him from linear algebra, do yourself a favor and stay far away, and learn from the mistakes from all the students that have taken him.
Oeding is easily the worst professor I've ever had at Auburn. His lectures are confusing and disorganized, making them hard to understand. Exams are extremely difficult, and no study materials are provided to help. He seems like a decent guy, but he simply cannot teach.
Everyone else touched on his flaws pretty well, but here's how to succeed. Apart from the Neural Network stuff, just don't listen to him in class. Instead, teach yourself from the textbook in class while he is teaching. You can go through twice the material in half the time with 5x the understanding compared to his rambles.
The only thing I've learned in this class is mental fortitude.
Stay away. Find someone else
Very nice guy who is super passionate and cares about his students; however, lectures are very chaotic and rarely actually helpful in working the material. Best way to succeed is teaching yourself and practically ignoring what he talks about. Notes are difficult to follow and often skim over the actually important topics
Neural networks will make you regret life and choosing any stem field. Proofs do not make sense, tests are agony. Classes are mandatory yet a waste of time. The textbook is the only way to learn. Having him as your teacher is harder to endure than Auburn Football. There is no hope for any of us to remember this material. Choose anything else.
He needs to be fired. I'd give him 0/5 if I could.
Dr Oeding is very caring. He is willing to talk to you when you dont understand something and provides opportunities for the class to tell him what is most confusing. His lectures can be confusing and tangential, but he is willing to slow down and explain when asked. It is a difficult class but he cares about students success and is very helpful.
Class lectures are rambling and disorganized, he mostly takes examples out of the book and explains them poorly. Likes to start off with hardest problems and teach multiple concepts at once which only he understands. Wastes a time reviewing material not on the tests or applicable in other math/engineering classes. Be prepared to teach yourself.
Likes to start with hardest problems, teaches multiple concepts at once, goes over everyone's head. Takes examples out of book and explains poorly. Wastes time explaining concepts inapplicable to any undergrad degrees and not on tests. Be prepared to teach yourself out of the book, do not take if have not taken calc before.
Bro loves giving homework due at 12:00 on gameday, which kinda explains what to expect. Lectures suck, he loves diving into why the math matters / proofs without teaching the math first. Just learn everything (except neural networks from lectures) from youtube/textbook and you'll be alright.
Changed curriculum (of a required class for Engineers) to focus on AI Aspects of Linear Algebra. He will at times write out Python code during lectures, (cool for the 4.47% of engineers who are Comp Engr or Comsci). His tests are grim, and he was upset that he had to curve them (Wouldn't have to if you knew how to teach). Neural Networks = torture
DO NOT TAKE! 3 assigments a week that can very well take hours, tests are half homework and half random neural network stuff he tries to teach, but he teaches everything in theory. We don't draw graphs and planes, we draw neural networks. Tests were very difficult, and there are group projects that make up 10% of your overall grade. Stay far away!!
Probably one of the most confusing professors I have ever had. It is a very theory-heavy class and he even teaches stuff not mentioned in the textbooks and tests on them such as neural networks. You have to be able to self-teach yourself for this class or you will struggle.
If you are curious on whether or not to take this teacher, let me make it very clear for you. DO NOT! Mandatory attendance, but class is completely worthless since he teaches in proofs and his handwriting is atrocious. Tests are extremely difficult with 50% of the material not being covered in the homework or in class.
Do not take Oeding if you wish to have any sort of productive experience with Linear Algebra. Offers zero guidance for tests and assignments. The assignments are graded very harshly and he gives no feedback. Lectures are tangential and erratic. Tests are a majority of the grade and are infinitely harder than what is taught and assigned for work.
Get ready to speed-run linear algebra and see things on the test you've never seen before.
Without a doubt the worst math professor I've ever had in my life. Linear Algebra is supposed to be one of the easier maths but it bc of how bad this guy was at teaching, it was one of my hardest. He writes sloppy notes in class giving you only formal definitions, gives little to no resources, and makes test problems that he never explained before.
Don't take him. It's just not worth it. You might be saying he can't be that bad but he is
This guy is the Lebron James of being one of the worst math professors of all time. I wish he got fired but sadly, he is tenured. He does not care about you. He does not believe in the concept of curving grades. He teaches and tests as if you have a PhD in Linear Algebra. Don't already understand Linear Algebra? Good luck trying to learn anything.
I wish a time traveler kicked a rock so that Luke Oeding never found his love for mathematics. His lectures are horrible, and tests you on things that are nonexistent on both his lecture notes, and the textbook. Also, if he makes a mistake on the exam, it's up to YOU to figure out what the mistake is. TAs are horrible too.
Luke Oeding should be a stand-up comedian. His lectures are a joke, his way of grading exams are a joke, and most importantly, the ridiculousness of his course makes me genuinely have a laughing fit. I'm surprised he isn't fired.
If you need Linear Algebra for credit, and he has available seats, do yourself a favor and take it next semester. This class will potentially tank your GPA. You think you're smart? You probably won't pass. Luke Oeding actively looks for the next Albert Einstein to take over the world. If you're not him, then you won't pass.
Speechless at this professor. One of the generation's worst math professors to be birthed into this world. Good luck to any future students that decide to take him. And if you manage to finished with an A in this course, I applaud you. You are the next Bill Gates.
what a soulless professor. doesn't care if the entire class is failing, refuses to curve. if he makes a typo on the exam, he will "CONSIDER" giving partial credit. he only cares about himself. terrible lectures, and if you spend 8 hours studying, only the one thing you didn't study will show up on the exam for 90% of it.
i feel like a video game npc writing "DO NOT ENTER" with my blood on the walls. do not sign up for a lecture with luke oeding, you will quickly realize how horrible of a professor he is.
Luke Oeding, it shows that you don't care about your students. Your lectures are barely legible, the material you cover is barely sufficient enough to do well on the exams, and you don't set your students up for success. You set them up for failure. No study guides, no practice problems, just pure chaos and agony. Please change as a person.
No matter how prepared you think you are for the exams, Your not. impossible to study for. doesn't care about the students. won't even release the class average on test scores because he knows it's terrible. Needs to be fired or Auburn needs to give me a refund. Take any other professor and the class will be passable and enjoyable.
He assigns HW every other day, taking 2+ hours, and then makes the tests based on nothing in the HW. He says he's not a tough grader, then fails everyone's assignments. His handwriting is horrid, he sometimes writes in Python, and his lectures are taken from the book, but taught worse. Hope he gets hit by a bus. Class average = 40% on last test.
I quit smoking cigarettes because I didn't want to get cancer, but after taking this monster's class, I got Cancer from him anyway
Satan's acts pale in comparison to Oeding's crime. Dictators look like angels in comparison
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. This class is genuinely terrible. It made my semester hell and turned the supposedly easy subject of linear algebra into a nightmare. Even if the time of the class works for you don't put yourself through this pain. If you have no choice and have to take it, I pray you keep your sanity because it has taken mine.
Would rather have taken Thermodynamics without being allowed a calculator, notes, or a textbook than see Luke Oeding again. He has definitely killed people, and will again.
If you think this class is a class, you are wrong! He is once again a generational talent at being the worst professor. If there was an award for W.O.A.T (Worst of all Time) Then he would be #1 at the WOAT ladder. I hope this guy gets demoted and taught how to actually teach a class. Horrible Professor, and a insult to what professors should be.
Prof definitely keeps children in his basement. Convinced his wife is being paid by him to remain married.
Have you ever heard of the Unabomber? Pretty sure Luke Oeding drove him to it with his awful teaching methods.
I don't know if I should take this out on my wife or kids. He's the worst professor ever, and I wish he just taught better for his exams and assignments instead of teaching graduate-level lessons. His first exam had problems with deep neural networks, which comprised more than 1/3 of the exam's total points. I don't think he should be teaching.
He probably assassinated the Archduke, and that CEO
Luke Oeding I regret taking your class If only I could see your rmp scores then With you, it's a great challenge just to pass A 4.0? I can't remember when You bring me pain, you bring me suffering Maybe linear algebra's not for you Your lecture's nonsense would in my ears ring But if I want to pass those are taboo
If theres anyone else teaching this class take them. If hes the only one teaching this class just dont take it that semester. Tests made no sense and if you skip class for a day or cant decipher his chicken scratch of a notebook youre cooked
I was going to write that I would rather have a lobotomy than have taken this class, but then I realized: I think I got a lobotomy from how bad this guy is at teaching.
This class is not an intro class. Intro classes are supposed to teach you the rules and allow you to get a good understanding. This class gives you a quick summary of the topic then expects you to understand advaced applications. Only take this class if you already have a graduate understanding. Just then you might be able to pass.
Im the 69th review to say that he sucks at his job. I emailed the dean because its just that bad.
Don't do it. Don't ever take this class. Im warning you this will cost you not only your gpa but also your sanity. Could be consider psychological torture.
First time writing one of these just to warn you not to take this professor. He teaches conceptually, which only hinders learning if you don't fully understand the concept/topic. Homeworks only act as decoys, and are vastly different to the questions on the test. Lectures are pretty rough, writes very fast with bad handwriting. TA's grade very hard
What you study will not appear on the test, homeworks are frequent, long, and not at all what is covered on your exams. Tests are curved only if you work hard for them (taking a quiz for them). Lectures are useless and mandatory, and his lecture notes are chicken scratches. Don't take him if you can. Other than that, good luck trying to pass.
Everything you need to know. He offered extra credit multiple times. He curved every exam. His exams are pretty difficult, you must learn using the textbook. His lectures are very hard to follow, better to learn on your own. Will round an 89 to a 90 if you do majority of the homework. Pretty understanding guy if you talk to him.
Legitimately the worst professor at Auburn. People always complain about Szulga, but Oeding is far worse. Nothing from the homework is on the exam. He responds to emails passive aggressively and recommends word vomiting on a page as a way to study for his class. Avoid at all costs.
Doesn't have any review days. I've heard office hours are not helpful.
You would have a better chance of memorizing the Bible than learning in this class.
Just take linear next semester bro
King Von didn't die, he's a Linear Algebra professor.
You have a better chance of diving out of a plane with no parachute than get an A.
Hey guys public service announcement, if you have ti take linear algebra with him you would do better just doing it at a community college and getting the credit there, please avoid this generational talent of being the worst professor
Professor Oeding's lectures were impossible to follow but the work wasn't that hard if you teach yourself. Besides neural networks, everything in the tests was also in the textbooks. The exams were all curved hard, but expect to spend a lot of time teaching yourself even with attending all the mandatory lectures.
Hands down the worst professor I have gotten at this institution so far. I was always confused. He didn't help much in office hours. Tutors were always confused when I show them his material.
Dr. Oeding is often framed as one of the worst teachers at Auburn University, but he's really not awful. He's your stereotypical boring teacher with a dry, near-monotone delivery on everything he says. He reminds me of the teacher from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. But sometimes, just sometimes, he can actually be interesting and maybe even tell a joke
Honors. DO NOT take if you have never successfully taken cal 1 before. Tears were shed. That said, I gained a much deeper knowledge/intuition of how calculus works. Tests are tortuous but he is a VERY graceful grader. Office hours are helpful. READ THE TEXTBOOK. Lectures are hard to follow and take notes. In hindsight, I'm glad I took it but dang.
They deleted my first review because they are trying to silence me. Bottom line is this was the worst professor I've ever taken with horrible teaching habits and impossible exams. Avoid this class at all costs
Dr. Oeding should not be allowed to teach this course anymore. Horrific, unhelpful lectures full of computer science topics that loosely relate to the material without offering any real information. His exams cover these computer science topics and will barely contain anything from the textbook. Stay away at all costs.
Loves the students. Best teacher I have had at Auburn.
This guy just has no idea what he's doing. Don't expect to know anything on any tests you have because he wont teach them.
This guy must get his test questions straight from the Epstein files the way I've never seen them before. You could go to every lecture and not understand a single thing coming out of it not even to mention they are mandatory. The group projects are unbearably tedious and we are given no direction on how to complete them. He grades harshly as well
Luke Oeding watches his students get railed on his test as frequently as he watches his wife get railed
Arguably the worst lecturer I have ever hear, It sorta feels like he knows the material but comes to class with next to no plan on how to get it across. I may have to retake this class. Very frustrating to come across this creature in a very busy semester where I can't dedicate the sheer time it would take to learn half of this creatures material.
Good Luck.
To put simply: if you are considering taking Luke Oeding for linear algebra, unless your life and future depend on it, DONT DO IT. Terrible lectures, impossible follow notes, cold and unhelpful personality, THE WORST EXAMS EVER MADE, you CANNOT prepare, I would legitimately rather retake the ACT than an Oeding exam, he will crush your spirit RUN
Worst professor to ever teach linear algebra
The worst professor I've ever witnessed. Lectures were extremely disorganized and made the material less understandable than not even being in attendance for them. Reading a foreign language would be more understandable than his handwriting during lectures. Exams felt more than impossible to prepare for, homework was very different than exams.
This guy luke oeding does not have any sort of idea what he is doing teaching and he especially does not know what he is doing when it comes to testing. If I could go back I would probably just punch him square in the nose rather than having a 50 the entire semester just for him to say congratulations I'm giving you a C at the end.
