hard on essays, but helpful
Makes class interesting. WAY TO HARD on my essay
sweet!

Definately covers a lot of interesting materials. Watch out for his attendance policies tho! He took points off because i didn't always sign the attendance sheet.
He was amusing, though the class was often boring.
great guy, boring material
While his classes are difficult and he is demanding, he is exceptionally knowledgable and willing to answer questions as they arise.
Tough grader, although I probably deserved it. Uncomfotable talking about very touchy subjects, but tries very hard. Overall a good person and professor (I took Deviance and Social Control).
This was a really interesting class. It was a little distracting because Prof. Kaelber seemed very uncomfortable talking about certain subjects/body parts (ie, cannot say "breast" when talking about nursing in public.) He is a fair grader, and fairly approachable. I would reccomend this class.
Lutz for Life
gotta love lutz. he really knows what he is talking about, and his humor and enthusiasm (sp?) is great during lectures.

hes a tough grader and he doesn't listen to you when you talk to him.. instead he fidgets around and looks at inanimate objects... i would avoid him
Makes a potentially interesting class boring. He might know his stuff though he won't let the class know this. His tests are a joke.

Don't be fooled by the first day when he tries to scare you off. If you attend lecture and do your reading this class is a sure thing. He is a really smart and interesting man too.
He has been one of my worst professors at this school. He makes the material far more boring than he has to and is more interested in hearing his own voice than teaching a class. I learned nothing from him and to this day would never take another one of his classes again.
Papers can be difficult and he's demanding. I learned a ton in this class.
kinda harsh on papers easy on exams
good teacher who was very helpful!
He is not a good lecture professor at all. Always mumbles and is overly worried about offending anyone with the subject matter.
I hate this man. He is hard to understand and mutters. He puts down his students and makes them feel stupid. I can't wait for this class to be over.
Not my favorite class, but he makes you think. Good writers do well in the class, bad writers do not. My exams got better scores than my papers, but some questions on the exams are worded weird. Tons of reading!!
Cool - if you are interested in the subject matter, it's a good class.
He is very demanding and not very understanding of students' needs. He expects you to know more than you do. He freaks out in class over very little things.

good prof
german accent will get confusing sometimes, but generally hes just really funny... good class
One of my all time favorite profs. Took him twice. If your interested in the material, highly recommend Lutz. His accent was fun to listen to, helped me remain engaged in lecture.
The WORST teacher!! He mumbles and has an heavy accent ans is hard to understand. He says that attendance isn't mandatory but it is, sometimes he gives out these in class assignments so if you missed class that day he'll take points of your participation grade. He really tough on papers, lots or reading and very very boring! AVOID at all costs.
This man is crazy. avoid at all costs. he mumbles all of the time, and he is unhelpful. his expectations are incredibly unclear and he does very little to clarify them for you.
He's pretty interested in the subject and his lectures are sometimes interesting. There is a lot of reading.
Its okay. He makes sure you understand the material if you come to class. If not, your doomed.
This professor is so intense. All he does is make you write lots of papers and they have to be so specific. If you mess up one thing your grade is screwed. And the midterm is way harder than he says it will be. As soon as this class is over i will be so happy.
I know a lot of people didn't like Professor Kaelber, but I felt that he was a good professor in that he was passionate about the subject matter and I felt he was very clear. He wasn't the most help when you had questions, but if you take notes and stay attentive, it isn't that difficult. A lot of papers, but you know about them way ahead of time.
This class was completely useless. He assigned pointless readings and assigned ridiculous amounts of work. I would not recommend him.
He is the most un interesting, monotone man I have ever listened to. He makes you print out 20 page readings offline, costing you more money on top of the 3 text books you have to purchase. If you make a small mistake on a paper he deducts so many points, for example if your quote to back up your argument is too long.
Huge language barrier. Expects way to much from students, and is a really tough grader. Really struggles to answer students questions and understand what they are asking him.
This class had such potential to be interesting! That was what I thought when I signed up for it,but I found out that I couldn't have been more wrong. The materials assigned were dry and irrelevant. What annoyed me the most was that his pop quizzes are weighted the same as exams. Save yourself; don't take the class.
This guy is so annoying. His policy on quizzes and attendance brought me down many grade points. He claims he has some way of seeing if you attend class and will hurt your grade. Other than that the material is completely useless in life and doesn't need a professor to teach it.
do not take this class if you can help it. i know he means well, but lutz is a remarkably ridiculous and difficult grader - he will take off for any little mistake, claiming it will help you in the future. okay. he literally measured my margins once and took off points because they were .25 inches too wide. i was so happy when this class was over.
Easiest class I've ever had. Open book tests. Show up to class, listen, and get the handouts! read the handouts over before an exam and organize them. his exams are pretty easy. he assigned readings to do before every class but i didn't have to read more than 2 of them.
The final is extremely difficult.
WORST PROFESSOR I'VE EVER HAD. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Ridiculous grader, unclear instructions, nitpicky over essays, just awful. If you can major in sociology without taking him, DO SO.
do NOT take this class! do not take ANY class with him! he changes assignments, doesnt say what he wants and then expects you to know! he actually gets upset when you ask questions! he expected us to think and know everything he did! I got two different grades for the same project! also WAYYYY too much reading! half of my life was spent on his clas
Lutz is quite possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. He is very unclear about what he wants and he is pretty rude too. He'll ask the class a question and wait 20 minutes for someone to answer instead of just moving on and teaching. You teach yourself everything in his class. Definitely the worst teacher I've had at UVM
Don't take a class w/ Kaelber unless you know you will make it to EVERY SINGLE class (he deducts 2 letter grades for "bad participation")He rambles about irrelevant topics, rude to students who volunteer to answer questions & is basically useless if you go to his office hours. The class could have been really good, if he wasn't teaching it.
Really passionate and knowledgeable, but this caused him to digress during lectures. It's interesting, but there's no way of knowing what's important for the exam and what's not. TONS of reading - 200 pages one week. You have to keep it all in your head or you're screwed. I think the word is out because his classes tend not to fill up...
Great lecturer if you're not bothered by a slight accent & digressions. Cares a lot & is really approachable. Reading is substantial but easy if you're somewhat competent. As for exams- he provides summaries & power points at most lectures. Also goes over practice exam q's prior to the exam. Either you try or you don't, Kaelber is more than fair.
Fascinating stuff! I was very interested in the topic of deviance and wasn't disappointed when I took the class. He is knowledgeable, but exams are not easy. Use his handouts and powerpoints.
I cannot even begin to tell you how much you should avoid this class. The paper's are nearly impossible, and he takes points off for every little detail, especially referencing. He has ridiculous policies and isn't helpful at all. Seriously, avoid this class at all costs and take it with someone else.
He cares about his students and wants them to learn, but I agree that he can be pretty hard on the papers. I took it during the summer.
Very interesting course material and really a good professor. He's a little quirky but the material is so interesting and he presents it in a good way. Exams are so easy if you just study your notes and the readings.
I really enjoyed this class. The material was always interesting however it sometimes got repetitive. If you go to every class you will have a good grade. He is very understanding and is very willing to help any student when they ask for it.
Seriously, this guy is ridiculously hard on the papers, To the point its insane. If everything isn't perfectly the way he wants it, he gives you a 0 instead of deducting points like a normal professor would. I will never take another class with this professor
He made it really interesting but expects college-level work. Great class. Excellent teacher. Knows the material extremely well.
Terrible teacher. If you take this class expect to read an average of 200+ a night. His tests and essays are harshly graded. He expects you to recall the most obscure details from the books on exams and never presents test material in class lectures. He is rude and does not connect well with his students. His jokes can be offensive.
The class material was really interesting, and I liked the lectures. He's quirky, but once you get used to that, everything is totally cool. He says participation counts, but I don't think he knew who was there and who wasn't. Read the readings and take notes on the powerpoints and the tests are easy enough
He thinks he's funny, he's not though. He spends all class talking.
Super easy class. Go to class you'll pass. Randomly collects in class assignments but exams are all online and open book. Extra credit opportunity to bump grade by entire letter (B+ to A-). Tries to be funny, sometimes is. Lectures are interesting. Never used textbook but probably can help on exams. 1000pt class so lots of chances to get good grade
Kaelber is an awesome guy and his accent is so funny. This class had online exams which were very easy and in class case studies to complete. You really had to go every class because you didn't know if there would be a case study that day. There was one paper/video project where you just watched a movie. Go to class and you'll pass.
Very good person to teach Soc. He is obviously quite passionate about sociology, especially pertaining to deviance and crime in society. His accent is awesome and he throws in jokes if you're listening which are pretty funny. Overall, not as personable as I would like, but he definitely knows what he is talking about and is eager to share info.
As long as you show up you will pass. He posts powerpoints online, and the exams are based on them. He's really interested in deviance, so he goes in depth with a lot of things.
We had a lot of discussion in this class, which I really liked. Lutz was always accessible and gave me helpful feedback on my research paper. Love sociology!
Taught our social deviance class in a strangely insensitive way. There was pretty much no actual sociological discussion of the case studies we looked at. A nice guy and quirky but not inspiring or a great teacher.
I took the online version of this class of deviance last year but had to drop it, then took the regular one this semester. You can buy the recommended textbook, if you just come to class, ask a few questions, and take notes on the powerpoints, you'll get good grades on attendance and exams.
Awesome professor! Mostly online exams but he provides for them. Do not miss the assignments he gives out in class.
Definitely an interesting guy. His class set up is little strange and sometimes it feels like we are talking about subjects that are completely unrelated to the class. For example, we spent 10 minutes looking at a photo of a cow in his global deviance class. However, he is a bit of a silver fox
He cares about his students and emailed us constantly to make sure we have the latest news about the class. I appreciated his practice tests he posted and used on the exams. This made the exams pretty easy.
Kaelber is a good professor because you can tell that he really cares about the material being covered and wants his students to feel that way, too. It took me a few weeks to get used to his oddly-placed jokes but once I did I grew to genuinely appreciate him. There's a decent amount of reading but he tends to go over the important stuff in class.
Professor does not seem comfortable teaching a course of this nature, rarely finishes his thoughts, doesnt know how to communicate w/ students when they share sensitive experiences, can be extremely insensitive. Doesnt allow questions during exams while theyre extremely poorly written (admits 2 answers are correct when its not a given option).
Responded quickly to emails. I appreciated that he let us skip or leave class when he talked about a particularly emotionally difficult topic (as long as we emailed him about it first). However, I struggled with his tests - the content wasn't difficult, but he asked such specific questions it was hard to study properly.
One of my favorite subjects., though exams can be difficult. If you pay attention and come to class he'll give you a good grade.
I really liked the online class in the summer. It was easy to do well on the exams based on the book. Four weeks is just long enough to keep involved and not be overwhelmed. Class was definitely not hard. He did a good job keeping us on track and responded to my emails.
He is not a good professor. He is insensitive. He does not finish his thoughts through his lecture. He gives way to much work, even though you have quizzes every week and an exam almost every 2 weeks. I STRONGLY recommend that you do not take a class with him.
Dr. Kaelber is pretty easy and helpful. If you study the powerpoints, you'll do well on the exams. Class can go way off topic sometimes but it makes sense if it is sociology class.
Lutz is very knowledgeable about sociology, yet often presents information in a confusing way for college students to understand. The textbook is very dense and hard to learn from, and he asks super specific questions on exams that are less about knowing the concept and more knowing very specific facts. He also has very strict classroom policies.
Lectures are decent, the time goes by pretty fast and the material is interesting. However, his in-class assignments are sometimes toughly graded (he rarely will give a 50/50). Readings are important since he'll ask multiple questions on exams about the specific readings. The final is also cumulative.
"No little German boy, don't take that Sociology course!" "Oh mein Gott zees ist ein Kurs full of Hardenassen!"
He treats his students like they are 5. His content is awful as he uses 3 long readings per week makes you take a quiz, but then only talks about the readings in lecture- nothing else. What's the point? Boring! There were 2 assigned books for the semester and you LITERALLY have to read them back to back within 2 weeks.
Great prof! Good teaching style and covers the material on the tests at length. But there are books and lots of articles to read.
Inconsistent with saying his expectations for the class.Attendance wasn't required but then started taking attendance and requiring worksheets that will impact the final grade. Also added discussion questions for students to submit for 1 reading they were assigned but towards end of semester decided the last ten people have to do mini-presentations.
Most disappointing class. Nothing had to do with deviance or sociology. He would just lecture about different topics every week and talk to us like babies. Even during topics that were relevant/interesting, all the information on the slides was so basic. If you've ever read the news ONCE then you would already know it. His sounds are funny though.
He is a good teacher and is really interested in what he teaches. The quizzes were easy. The last section on opioids was really interesting
This class became my worst nightmare. I've never had a grade so low. Be prepared to read 4 books, 17 readings, 4 short writing assignments, 3 video presentations, a research paper, and 3 exams. He didn't put in ANY grades until wk9. I reached out to many different people, and even though I was obviously struggling, they said they couldn't help me.
I would not recommend taking this class, the professor is definitely the worst instructor I've had at UVM so far. He took three months to grade writing assignments turned in in September. Honestly, I don't think he knows what he's going to say every time he opens his mouth. Not helpful when you ask questions. Avoid him at all costs.
Very knowledgeable professor. I am a sociology major and his understanding of disability issues was amazing. His class had quite a lot of work for my tastes. I am not a fan of the presentation requirement.
Horrible. Just don't do it. SO much work, back-to-back assignments, arbitrary facts expected to be memorized for exams. Slow with grading. Awkward and insensitive with delicate topics. Makes you write 5 papers and make 3 video presentations but only grades 1 of each randomly. Dry and boring class, no discussion. Rambles on and on in lectures.
Kaelber's lectures are super interesting and all focused on modern events. He puts a ton of information on his powerpoints which are great to use for exam study. This class is chockful of triggers so do be careful, but this is definitely one of my favorite classes I've taken so far and I've learned so so so much from him.
the textbook is required for this class, but its pretty good. Yellowdig is awesome. Just pay attention to the schedule and take notes on the materials. Goes by quickly. I was easy for me to get an A.
Lutz is knowledgable and makes it interesting, but does not tell you what to study for in exams. Exam has trick questions about facts that aren't as relevant. Much of the videos/photos in the lectures felt like I was surfing the darkest side of reddit and for the most part it was not needed. I like that his goal is unbiased transparency, though.
Lutz is awesome. I seriously love the dude. Lectures are engaging, and work load is low. Attendance isn't mandatory but there are "unannounced" in class assignments (you can tell when they'll be from the syllabus).
Great professor. He tells super funny life stories to tie into lecture. He graded class assignments quite easily, although his tests were a tad difficult. He was fair and very kind, also super passionate about his subject. He assigns a lot of reading, but they are interesting and semi-optional.
His exams are "Choose the BEST answer" which gets really annoying when there are multiple correct answers. He is a cool person but the class structure just wasn't it, his lectures were boring and he usually didn't pause long enough for you to write everything down. Attendance isn't really mandatory but if you don't go you might miss an assignment.
Rude, unprofessional, disrespectful towards students. Grading criteria is unclear. Often goes on weird rambling lectures that have nothing to do with course materials. Do not take this class unless you want to feel like you're on trial at any given moment.
After my second class with Kaelber, I am just excited to never see him again. He somehow makes super interesting content extremely uninteresting and does not care about or make any accommodations for students no matter what (medical emergencies, etc). His tests are awful and ask obscure questions unrelated to course content and sociology in general
Lutz Kaelber was one of the worst professors I have had the misfortune of taking a class with, which is such a shame because the topic material is so interesting if it was not taught by someone so insensitive and uncaring. The exams are extremely unfair and use specific details from readings that are not discussed. Hope you're good at guessing!
Overall, Prof. Lutz was really well informed about subject matter and graded less harshly than other professors I've had at UVM. However, he did have a tendency to make some matters political and this made discussions interesting, especially for those who don't follow politics too well. Good writing skills/knowledge is HUGE 4/5, Would Recommend
Professor Kaelber is without a doubt the least caring person I have ever met. You will hear him say many times verbatum " I do not care about the grades of any of my students, It is my job to simply deliver the material, and whether you do well is up to you". Many kids like him for his easy grades, but should u miss a class he will fail u instantly
Knows his stuff, but this class is not easy. The textbook is terrible, and he uses it only occasionally. Make sure to come to class and turn the assignments.
Aside from his frequent sarcastic remarks and disrespect towards his students' thoughts and opinions, Lutz is a hyper-specific grader. He does not care about how much time or effort you put into his papers/assignments as long as you are not writing in the exact style that he likes. Do not take any of his courses as long as you can avoid it!
One of the worst professors I have ever had. attendance was mandatory, which I understand. But then the assignments that he randomly gave out was rarely graded, he would only collect a few to actually grade, so your work would be wasted. While lecturing he would hope that you understood what he was implying and never explain it.
The classes schedule and topics would jump around and hardly ever seemed to relate to one another. Then on the test it was over the most haphazard stuff that he briefly touched upon and there was a study guide. I am a pretty good student, and I got a C on the first test. trying to do better I studied and got a C-. Then took the exam and got a C-.
Lutz is generally unhelpful and apathetic towards his students. Deviance and Social Control is an interesting course, but the grading is ridiculous. He collects assignments from different sections of the alphabet in attempt to get five from each person, but he messed it up this semester. The unit tests cite the most seemingly insignificant details.
Prof does not make class mandatory but collects assignments. Make sure not to miss any. I was there for mine and got full credit for all. He has practice exams but exams were based mostly on powerpoints and not easy. He knows his stuff.
He cares about his students but makes sure you did your work before handing out As and Bs. The online discussion forum was fun. The textbook is a bit dry but covers important topics such as drug policies. The summer course is less work than other courses I had in spring or fall.
One of the best professors for online courses at UVM. With the new Brightspace system, there were a few problems, but he found ways to help us with them. The self-paced style works for me, but don't take it if you need a lot of hand-holding.
I cannot stress this enough - do NOT take a class with Kaelber. He is rude to students needing accommodations, does not care if you have valid reason for missing class, and it horrible at communications. Take any other SOC professor but not this guy. He does not share information and does not create a welcoming classroom. Terrible.
he is rather condescending, does not give good feedback, poor at communication (especially email) and a weirdly difficult grader for an intro class. Even if you have a firm grasp on the material, he intentionally puts "gotcha" questions in the quizzes you can't answer if you missed a page of the reading,
Lutz is the worst professor I have EVER had. He is so obnoxious and painfully vain. Almost made me decide to ditch my sociology major until I realized it was not the material that was bad, but him! If you can avoid him, I would highly recommend doing it -- even if it means waiting another semester to take a class you've been waiting for!
Cool content material. Terrible man. Usually, for a class I got an A in I would not bother going back to write such a review but I feel obligated to warn others about how bad he is. If you can take a sociology class with any other prof I would strongly suggest it. He is hyper-specific and the way he grades makes no sense. Avoid, Avoid Avoid!!
He is just boring. He is very knowledgeable but gives hard tests and quizzes. I reached out to get points back on a quiz and he told me it would be too hard to go back and change. Thought that was crazy. The online quizzes are based on the textbook, but the tests are mainly graded on the slides. I prolly wouldn't take again but not the worst ever.
All of his tests and weekly quizzes are full of irrelevant "gotcha" questions that are almost impossible to recall. He spends half of the lecture ranting about how UVM as an institution sucks (lowk real but anyways) and how he can't navigate Brightspace. He always seems frazzled. For an intro to sociology class, he makes it excessively hard.
As a really lazy student the class wasn't terrible. Exams weren't easy but I felt he was a pretty nice grader with the papers as long as you follow his citation directions. If you go to class and complete all the in class assignments that's a major grade booster along with the online final exam. Not the best lecturer but he was pretty funny.
Lutz's class can be a rollercoaster, but the content is super engaging. Exams require close attention to details, so using tools like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook is a big help. Attendance is a must, but the workload is manageable overall.
Prof. Kaelber was super knowledgeable and I enjoyed his lectures, but he is not lenient or understanding about outside circumstances (which took a small toll on my grade). He can be a bit short through email, and is definitely not the most approachable person. He is a tough grader and has difficult (very specific) exam questions. Funny guy though.
I had to seat back and ask myself is this man was okay. I never missed his lectures, yet somehow he still managed to confuse me about the content. I had to learn this class myself, as he made unfunny jokes for the rest of the semester. What irked me the most was how rude he was, like why be a prof if you can't be nice to your students?
I liked him overall, though he does not accept excuses easily. One of the more knowledgeable and informed professors at UVM
Wait for any other professor to take this class because it is infinitely easier with someone who cares about their profession. Don't be a teacher if you cant teach! Lots of heavy readings and essays that he grades harshly. Two textbooks and a novel mandatory that are super expensive and have to purchase on your own. Hyperspecific so cite everything
Engaging and knows his subject! Online class consisted of group chats and quizzes. Focuses entirely on textbook. He'll help you keep track of everything throughout the semester (summer is definitely easier).
I found him to be accessible and friendly. The seminar format worked for me pretty well. I relied on his powerpoints to help with understanding the readings. I think you can learn a lot if you put the work in.
The content was interesting, but he was a horrible professor. Seriously just not a kind human, and had no empathy, remorse, or care about his students. He hated those who were excited and wanted to participate, he hated those who were quiet. Grades also solely depend on weekly quizzes and 2 exams (midterm and final).
I found him quite personable and approachable when I had questions! He includes informative statistics and and personal stories in his lectures. Pretty entertaining the entire semester. I highly recommend this professor!
I loved Intro online. Any beginning sociology student will love this class. We learned so many things and it was fun to participate in class. He offered extra credit, which helped me get a good grade.
this class was excessively depressing, and the professor only made it worse. there is a new topic each week about how the world sucks- and he agrees! and will make it economic issue every time! he does not care about outside opinions, or about anything that he doesn't agree with. he is deeply uninviting and hard to be around. avoid if possible
I didn't go to class for half of the semester and got a B+. Pretty straightforward stuff. Gives tons of options to improve grade. Take Prof. Kaelber if you can.
Amazing how much he knew about some of the theorists, but his accent made it difficult to understand sometimes. His papers were hard, though the tests weren't intense. It helped to talk to him in advance. Take a lot of notes in class, and you'll get a good grade.
The exam was very difficult. He keeps checking up on you and requires a lot of writing
He is my favorite professor I've had so far and I plan on taking another class with him soon. Hes so entertaining and knowledgeable on the material. My only complaint is the only grades are weekly at-home quizzes and big exams, but as long as you do the textbook readings and study (a lot) for the exams, it is really not super difficult to do well.
Awful teaching. Awful and depressing class. All out of class work is online but refuses to let us use our computer in class. Will not give any helpful feedback even when asked. Weirdest exam questions ever. Fo not take his class!
If you don't have a religion, get one, and pray.
