Mathematically challenging.
He did a great job teaching a very hard topic for the first time. Homework was more than fair. However, I found that his tests, the final in particular, were insane for the amount of time given. Not worth studying for the final.
LOVE LOVE LOVE his class!! The best chemistry professor I have ever met. If you really spend time on homework, and understand the lecture material (he explain very well), you will definitely get a good grade! Love him :))
Teacher was nice and VERY enthusiastic, but neither his lectures nor his homework assignments helped much when it came time for the challenging examsfinal, which were too long and sometimes quite confusingly written. One annoyance I had was that his lectures often went over the 50 min. mark.
He makes everything so clear, and always able to answer questions during office hour. I got a 4.0 in his class (because I love his class!), and indeed it requires a large amount of time to understand the material. Don't complain the class is tough if you are luck enough to have he as your teacher!
Dr. Maibaum is a great teacher! The class was tough but if you understand the practice exams and homework the exams are straightforward. I wish he taught 456 and 457.
Maibaum has been the best lecturer that I've had in the chem department. He is so good at explaining really difficult concepts in the most simple way possible. I struggled a lot in gen chem and ochem, but thrived in pchem because of Lutz. Weekly homework assignments but really helped prepare for exams. Tests were super fair. Highly recommend!!
He's alright.
Lutz is awesome! Pchem is a hard class so no matter who you take youre going to have to work hard but ours is very enthusiastic during lectures and really seems like he wants the best for students even though the exams were hard, the curve is your friend
Professor Maibaum has been the best chem professor I've had so far at UW. He was very interactive with his lectures, his tests were good all multiple choice, and this was his first time teaching 152 so I was worried and he was the best i could ask for. Would take his class again and again if i could.
He did really great for teaching Chemistry for his first time. He has good lectures that clearly explain concepts, but his tests do pack a lot of content into a short period of time. However, they were all multiple choice and all connected to what we had learned in lecture. Also, he's a very nice guy.
His first time teaching chem 152 and he did great. Hard class, great professor. Also very enthusiastic when he teaches.
Lutz was amazing considering it was his first time with gen chem! He is approachable in class. and the fact he walks around after putting up a PollEv question asking everyone how they're doing and providing advice really made me love him. Attending every lecture in person although they're recorded really helped me. I didn't need the textbook.
Professor Maibaum has been my favorite professor so far at UW. I took Chem 152 with him last quarter and despite it being his first time teaching it, he did a phenomenal job. He is incredibly kind and his lectures are amazing. The content is very difficult so you have to work for it. Graded on a curve 2.6-2.9. Tests can be harder than lectures!
Lutz is the best professor I've had at UW. He cares for his students so much, takes the time to answer all questions & is a great lecturer. He makes challenging concepts seem easy w/o oversimplifying. He didn't do as great of a job teaching Thermodynamics, but I read the txtbook for that section & was fine. Other than that I didn't read the textboo
As his first go at an online class - Maibaum was amazing! He's passionate about what he teaches and cares about his students. He is understanding and makes the effort to answer all questions. Maibaum made learning this difficult course a little easier.
Maibaum is just an all-around great professor. He truly cares for his students and wants the best for them. He always makes sure questions are answered so there is no confusion among students. He is kind, understanding, and full of enthusiasm. With his german accent, chem is a little more fun(:
I highly recommend taking classes with Prof. Maibaum! Chem152 is a hard class, but he made concepts clear by linking all the units together and explaining how they were related. Also, grades arent only based on midterms and a final; daily homework/weekly quizzes made up a fair portion which was nice. Passionate and takes time to answer questions
OMG BEST LECTURER. He can turn a morning lecture on quantum tunneling into a street party in Ibiza. The accent, the chemical choreography, and the personality could not be more perfect. THE MAN MAKES CHEMISTRY A BLAST
was his first time teaching 152 & he did a good job. Lectures were very organized, not too fast, and detailed. Tests were focused on what we were learning, they weren't easy tho; very calculation heavy which I'm not too good in (but that's a me problem). One thing I disliked was he didn't provide a study guide or txtbook problems to study for tests
Prof Maibaum is a nice person and explains concepts well in lectures. But make sure to take good notes from the textbook. Get ready to take a LOT of notes. Take notes from ALEKS too when you come across unfamiliar concepts because Prof doesn't cover everything in lectures. There are tests and weekly quizzes. Not too difficult but make sure to study
Loved Him. A solid choice for chem 142. As a freshmen, it was def a hard class - don't except less. We had weekly quizzes that were VERY difficult but if you study and know your test taking skills(time pressure), you should be ok. Midterms were really similar to the quiz. Practice the textbook questions and go to TA office hours. DONT PROCASTINATE
I love his passion and how easy he is to talk to including how quickly he responds to student emails. I would definitely recommend him with the caveat that later quizzes get much harder as they become more math intensive. This gets challenging since the student has to pretty much get them first try as the time provided per quiz is not enough
Great general chemistry class considering the circumstances. Professor Maibaum is such a fun lecturer and you can tell he's really passionate about chemistry (especially quantum mechanics). It's definitely not an easy class, but he gave us all of the resources we needed to succeed. Would definitely recommend!
Professor Maibaum is amazing! He is so passionate about chemistry. Chem 142 is DIFFICULT. I took it without any background in chemistry, and I definitely was not prepared for it. There is a lot of homework, and I think too much is expected of students considering the pandemic. Takes lots of work, so plan your schedule around that.
Prof. Maibaum was very fun to listen to and is very passionate about teaching chemistry. His instruction is clear for the most part and concepts are explained well.
I've heard so many gen chem horror stories, but not for Professor Maibaum's class. He is very kind, lectures were at a good pace + actually educational, the class was organized + somewhat difficult (to be expected, I mean it's chemistry), but if you put in the time + effort regularly, you will pass. Procrastination will be your worst enemy.
I never leave ratings for professors but Maibaum was actually a g. As a member of a frat being a STEM major is hard enough as it is, but having Maibaum as a teacher made this very possible. His lectures are very clear and helpful, and the assigned readings and practice questions help tons. The tests can be challenging, but nothing he didn't prep.
Amazingly clear lectures and very approachable, takes time to make sure his teaching is clear and is very passionate of the subject. Class is difficult (I mean, its chemistry) but Prof. Maibaum makes it worth it. Considering the online circumstances, Prof. Maibaum is a champ who adapted very quickly and makes zoom university less of a drag.
Professor Maibaum is amazing. I am a freshman who just completed his intro chem course and he definitely teaches well. He is very straightforward on tests/quizzes and he has a genuine love for chemistry. I recommend him to anybody who needs to take Chem-142 as a major requirement.
To clarify - the "lots of homework" part is the ALEKS system. We have objectives to learn and complete each week. If you can find the time to do them every day, maybe two hours a day, it isn't that terrible, and Prof. Maibaum's great about dropping topics for the week if we haven't learned them yet. I'm not a fan of gen chem, but I liked his class!
Professor Maibaum is a great professor. His lectures encompass everything that you need to know and he is generally laid back and very approachable. Generally, the quizzes are ok especially since you have access to lecture slides. He is very open and is willing to listen to student feedback. Overall, great professor and made Chem 142 very enjoyable
He gives 4 question quizzes each week and they are almost worth equal to final. There is also two midterms worth around equal. The questions are very confusing and if you take class, focus a lot of back of book problems.
Chem 142 is a tricky class, especially online, but Maibaum is a very positive person who makes it clear in lecture what will be on quizzes! The only tough thing about quizzes and exams are that they dont have many questions, so a few mistakes can be detrimental. If you want to do good on quizzes, read the book and do end of chapter problems!
Maibaum is a great option for chem 142! He is super nice and did a good job adapting to online. Weekly quizzes helped take off pressure from big exams. Weekly homework, but not bad as long as you plan it out. Only critique was what grade you had was always unclear. Easy to talk to and would recommend.
Amazing prof! He genuinely cares about his students learning and explains it in terms that help us understand. His expectations are very clear and he makes sure you learn well and are prepared for tests. His enthusiasm for the material makes the class more enjoyable. Chem is a hard class but he makes it very manageable and understandable!
I had Maibaum entirely online my first quarter at UW and he was one of the nicest, more clear instructors I have had. In the beginning, it seemed like he was going to slow to cover all the material, but he was trying to have us understand the much harder concepts. Reading the book before lectures improved my experience, and his quizzes weren't hard
If you have to take chem 142, Maibaum is really your best option. He is extremely caring and he makes his lectures engaging and easy to follow. The class is pretty difficult, but if you read the textbook and do the book problems you should be okay. He makes a hard class more bearable.
He is an amazing person and made my first quarter at UW bearable. His lectures are great and his midterms are fair. The weekly quizzes are also fair, however, could be your only weak spot if not fully prepared beforehand. His class is 100% manageable considering chemistry isn't an easy subject! Love to take him again.
Absolutely loved Lutz! Chem 142 is a super tricky class but he makes it less intimidating. It shows that he genuinely cares about what he is teaching. The only tips are read the book chapters before lecture so you have a better idea of what is going on, and make sure you study for each quiz because they add up quickly.
Maibaum is so passionate about what he teaches, and he explains things very well. His class is hard, especially online, but he does his best to be there for every student. His lectures are helpful, but you will have to do more on your own to understand the harder concepts. His quizzes were pretty difficult, but not impossible.
He was a very sweet and nice professor, but his class is very quiz heavy, with a short quiz every week. ALEKS appears to be carrying a huge weight in the grade book strangely so make sure to do it every week. Labs are very clear and easy to pass. The curve is nonexistent but overall not a bad experience for a gen chem course.
Professor Maibaum is an amazing professor! his lectures were easy to follow and he made the slides available within the same day. the weekly quizzes have a really tight time restraint, so they can be tough. make sure you're comfortable with working through problems quickly, especially the example problems he goes over during lectures
Lutz is a real nice guy. You can tell he cares about his students and the material. Go to class and study the lecture slides. Would definitely take a class from him again.
He really cares about teaching and he's good at it too. His lectures are really helpful and he's always willing to answer questions. He doesn't assign homework aside from ALEKS but the book problems he recommends really help with quizzes and tests. His quizzes and tests are very fair and always cover the book problems he recommends + the lectures.
Professor Maibaum is an excellent teacher! His lectures are very clear, with nicely laid out examples that convey what he is trying to explain very effectively. Class contains weekly quizzes that are occasionally difficult, but no real curveballs. Exams were also very reasonable. Would take again! Very good professor, made chemistry fun!
His class is on the easier side compare to other weed-out classes. Lecture is clear and easy to understand, and everything in quizzes/exams are in the lecture, so use the lecture's slides to study for them.
Maibaum is truly an amazing human. Even in an online environment, his caring personality comes out. Weekly quizzes are short and fast. They are very tough and if you make any mistakes your grade goes down a lot because there arent many questions. Awesome prof but make sure to study and fully understand the material to do well.
Professor Maibaum is really sweet, and you can tell that he's passionate about what he does and that he wants you to succeed. I had him for CHEM 142, which is widely known as a weed-out class, so it's a given that grading is going to be harsh, but he made the content as easy to grasp as possible. Put in the work, and you should be fine.
Professor Maibaum is one of the sweetest professors I've had at UW so far! Chem was never my strong suit, but he makes every concept understandable! You can tell that he's passionate about what he does and that he cares about his students. He's very easy to talk to as well! I really enjoyed the small conversations we had before lectures started. :)
He's a cool guy.
Professor Maibiaum is the best professor for chem 142! He goes slow so you understand it and his quizzes are fair. Make sure to study the worksheets, practice problems from slides and from the books. He's really caring and a cool professor! So passionate.
He is really nice and passionate about chemistry although the weekly quizzes are extremely hard and unfair. I understood and studied each week's topic and failed to pass the quizzes due to the extremely short amount of time available to do them. You get one question wrong and it's 25% off your quiz grade, it is hard to demonstrate you understand.
Prof. Maibaum is a genuinely great person and professor. You can tell that he loves chemistry, and he is able to teach the subject really well. He was also able to adapt very well to teaching remotely, which was very nice. Although the class is tough, and you have to read the textbook and do the exercises to do well, Maibaum made this class fun.
Maibaum is a fantastic professor and wicked smart. He has a love of chemistry unparalleled. I won't say I did phenomenally in this class - I did about average, but for the amount of information you cover in such a short period he makes it tolerable, with anyone else I may have given up and dropped the class entirely.
Prof. Maibaum is very sweet and you can tell he loves chemistry. For the weekly quizzes, you get 15 mins for four questions and if you get one wrong, that's 25% off your quiz grade which is stressful. He does care for his students and is extremely understanding and he is also very easy to talk to. He made chem a lot more enjoyable for me
professor maibaum is passionate about chemistry and it comes through in his lectures. you don't have to go to the lectures in order to pass, but i'd recommend it. the aleks homework is time consuming but also worth it. there's weekly quizzes on the subject matter which are usually easier if you do the aleks first and/or read the textbook. nice guy
Never provide practice exams or sample questions before tests, students do not even know what they will be tested on, HW grades are based on correctness, and test questions are totally different from what's in the lectures. Avoid taking Chem 452 with this professor. 0/10
This professor might be good for the gen chem series but he is not good for chem 452/453. He barely explains examples and he only demonstrates the general concept during class, what's worse is that he doesn't give out practice exams and his exam is nothing like his homework. He gives out zero effort teaching this class, AVOID by all causes!
Don't listen to other people. Maibaum is great and he makes lectures fun and easy to understand. Although he doesn't provide practice exams, the midterm/final exam questions are way easier than the hw and it's mostly just math. And even if you're struggling w/ hw, going to his office hours really helps! Definitely one of the better chem profs at UW
He was very organized in his lectures and explained difficult concepts well. Although there were no practice tests the worksheets prepared you well for the test.
Maibaum was an amazing professor. His class was graded and all the assignments were not too difficult. If you showed up to class it was easy to do well because he explained all of the topics very clearly. Overall he was just a caring professor that wanted you to succeed in his class. All of his lecture slides are clear and concise.
Professor Maibaum is the most amazing professor I've had. He's very caring and his lectures are very organized and clear. There are however weekly quizzes that consist of 4 questions, and they are worth a lot in the final grade. Overall, would 10/10 recommend him for a chemistry course.
Professor Maibaum really enjoys teaching and you can tell. He tries to make everything we learn make sense to the best of his ability, and explains things thoroughly so students get a wholistic understanding of what we are learning. The 15 min quizzes each week are a little difficult, but he is an excellent professor overall!
I love this man. Take his class! That is all.
The best gen chem prof here. I took 142 and 152 with Maibaum, and because of my experiences, I'll be taking 162 with him again in the fall. The midterms involve only problems you have seen before, either on the worksheets or quizzes. The discussion sections are not mandatory, but definitely worth attending.
The class was daunting but his lecture pace and thoroughness made it less daunting. Sometimes he went too slow which made the end of the quarter rushed where the subjects were some of the hardest. But overall respectable, would take again.
I haven't spoken a word to this man the entire quarter, yet I would still take a bullet for him if I had to. He was a fantastic lecturer and while the content was difficult he mad it fun and enjoyable, even if it was hard to understand at times
Professor Maibaum is an incredible educator. He is very thorough during his lectures, and he manages to keep them engaging. All of his exams were more than fair. We had more than enough time and the questions were all very similar to problems that we had solved in discussion sections.
Maibaum made sure to take the time to explain the very difficult concepts of chemical thermodynamics. Has a caring attitude throughout his lectures. Nothing unreasonable, exams formats very predictable. Great teacher
i love the professor
He's a blessing for teaching Chem 152 in the spring. If you get this professor for one of your chem series classes, consider yourself very lucky. His exams are curved but very straightforward with no tricks. Finish your ALEKS hw and putting in effort in doing most of the end of chapter problems and you will pretty much be fine.
Literally best chem professor in the entire department. His content and lectures make the difficult content understandable. He is very caring and respectful. I am so happy I was lucky enough to take both 152 and 162 with him. The structure and organization of his courses are a 10/10. Take chem with him, you wont regret it!!
I was lucky enough to get Professor Maibaum for two classes last year, CHEM 143 and CHEM 153. His classes were amazing, and he clearly cared about the content and how well students understood it. He even re-taught a lecture to ensure we as students understood the concepts after we asked a lot of questions after class. Take his classes if you can!!
Professor Maibaum is amazing at explaining difficult concepts in a way that is easier to comprehend. Although the lectures get a bit tedious at times if you have prior knowledge on the topics being taught, he is still an amazing professor who cares alot about his students. He is also extremely funny, which makes classes more fun.
Love Lutz so much! He's such a blessing to the chem department and I feel so lucky to have had him for 2 weed-outs. His lectures are engaging and fun. He doesn't move through material too quickly and keeps ALEKS very reasonable. His tests and grading are ridiculously tough but his personality and obvious care for his students make up for it.
Professor Maibaum is incredible! He truly has a gift for explaining difficult concepts. His exams were based only on what he covers in lecture. I got an A in the class and never once read a page of the textbook. He speaks slowly and carefully. Definitely don't hesitate to ask questions because he usually has really interesting, thorough responses.
Lecture and class organization was confusing. Did not feel engaged either.
I took both 143 and 153 with Prof Maibaum and had a positive experience. Although they are challenging courses he genuinely cares about helping you succeed. The classes are homework and quiz heavy but this helps prepare you well for finals and midterms. Labs are straightforward and easy.
this class asks for so much, only take this class if you absolutely have to. Take easy classes if your gonna take this class. you have lecture 3x a week (1 hr each) 1 quiz section (1 hr) 1 lab (3 hrs) lab reports (due THE DAY after), pre-lab quizzes, lab notes, weekly Wednesday quizzes, 2 midterms, and ALEKS! u couldn't pay me to take this again.
Maibaum is a coolguy and is pretty decent at lecturing but for chem 142 he was teaching content from lab a week later, didnt do to many problem examples, and it is very obvious that the clads puts students in a position to struggle every step of the way
Maibaum is really passionate about chemistry but his ability to teach leaves a lot to be desired. His approach is lecturing the general idea/concept so he doesn't provide examples in class. This makes it hard to work through problems in the textbook/Aleks/quizzes on a weekly basis. The only positive note is his midterms cover material from quizzes.
I would take a bullet for this man. The final was weirdly difficult compared to the midterms (and I thought I failed it) but other than that no complaints. The lectures are amazing and he did some experiments during them, most of them involving fire and it was amazing. For the midterms, study the quizzes, a lot of the questions are the exact same!
Absolutely awesome teacher. I took chem 143 and 153 with him and loved every minute of it. The lectures are thorough and cover content at a good pace. Weekly quizzes on Monday were difficult but doable, and midterms/final was very aggressively written. I learned a lot from these classes and would highly recommend Maibaum.
not allowed to take cheat sheet, weekly quiz. It is so boring to see too many words in his slides. His exams are also very difficult and does not provide extra credits or curves for grades.
Hmm I'm not sure how I feel about this. On one hand he was a great lecturer and you can tell he knows a lot about chemistry and is very passionate about it. But on the other hand I don't like the way that he administered his exams, some of the things he would ask came out of nowhere or were nothing like the examples we had gone over in class.
Took 142 and 152. He is a lovely teacher and fun to listen to, but tests are where it falls short. He teaches a lot of general concepts, and not so much how to apply what we've been taught. The exams are VERY difficult. There's no study guide so I never know what to expect. The only positive thing is he curves it greatly at the end of the quarter.
Prof. Maibaum was great. He's passionate about what he does, which shows in his lectures. There are weekly quizzes, but they help when it comes time for the midterms. Review the quiz section worksheets; there are similar questions that show up on the midterms and final. Labs weren't too complicated, and he was accessible outside of class.
No matter what professor you get for the UW Intro chem series, it will be a HARD class. That being said, his lectures are engaging and you can tell he loves chemistry, but he gives hard tests with no curve which can leave you catastrophizing about your grade. I'd say the biggest determinant of your grade and well-being really depends on your TA.
Dr. Maibaum is so passionate not only about chemistry but about his students learning chemistry. He tests VERY trickily, but when you look at the answer key, it's an "ohhh I see" moment. He is generally pretty fair. His explanations can be quite complex but if you ask him to re-explain, he is very willing to. Highly recommend.
He slays
He is not bad. He will not learn your name by choice. He will bore you to death with content that seems simple but will become oddly complicated in ten minutes. His tests are challenging. Easily excitable, hopelessly not personal
I have taken Maibaum for the entire gen chem series, WORST DECISION EVER! He is a nice guy, but an awful professor. His slides have minimal information (most of which is negligible) he never goes over any examples (despite having the heaviest, most calculation based tests of any gen chem professor I have seen), and he is stingy w/ partial credit.
- Weekly quizzes on Monday (To me, it was great since quizzes cover 12% of your final grade. one of the midterm is also 12%. If you do well on Weekly quizzes, you can basically cover up a whole midterm) - I think his lectures are amazing - Go to office hours! He is so helpful :) - Taking him for my chem 153 currently.
Lecture and homework are two different world. Labs are formalism, and there are too many works with too early due day.
Maibaum is the illest he made me like chem if you are taking chem 162 take Maibaum and if you do bad it's ya own fault real take
2 midterms + final. 3 classes, 1 quiz, 1 lab section per week. Classes not mandatory, uploaded on Panopto. Quiz marks attendance, you do 1 worksheet for practice. Lab is 3 hours, but my TA lets us go when we were done. Lab report either due midnight of next day or next week. Week's homework due midnight of Sunday on ALEKS; 4-34 topics weekly.
Chem 152 is one of the hardest classes I've taken but he is a great professor. He is effective at teaching the material. He just tests pretty darn hard. But in the sense of he REALLY makes you apply the concepts taught in class using math and context-specific information in the question. Very fun and goofy guy. Mad chiller, he was in my BeReal.
Had him for the entire gen chem series. Lots of HW only b.c of aleks tests were hard, he inst a very good test maker however I loved his personality and teaching style. Its just the content of chem is hard to begin with. Weekly quizzes sucked sometimes but were helpful study material. Chem is hard but he is a good prof (minus the tests)
Super friendly and very good at explaining difficult topics in a way that makes sense. Tests are HARD though. All free response and limited time to work through them. Curves grades very generously however.
He's really nice, but a terrible lecturer. He just repeats himself. Running behind in lectures because he takes so long. I've been learning way more from my TA during discussion section. The examples he gives are basically useless for doing homework or labs
trash
Nice guy, but has been falling very behind in lecture. Midterm scores were EXTREMELY low for the acids/bases exam, and he wasn't super helpful or willing to give any partial credit. The exams are nothing like the practice, and have lots of application. Most helpful resource are the weekly quizzes in Canvas every Monday evening.
Very enthusiastic and great at explaining things. Will always answer questions that you have. Tests are very difficult with not much time though.
Spends more time in lecture showing you how to derive the equations rather than how to apply them. Gives little partial credit on exams, so had low averages. Also, there's a lot to do in very little time. BUT many exam questions are pulled from his quizzes or the discussion sheets. Redo the midterms to prep for the final - they will be similar.
Great lecturer who provides useful slides and worksheets as study material, which really helped to prepare for the midterms/final. However he also incorporates weekly quizzes that make up a good amount of your grade, which I found to be unnecessarily stressful and didn't really benefit my understanding of the material. Overall a very good prof.
For 152 highly recommend especially for those retaking he is a good prof. Highly recommend doing the DS Wk, reviewing the quizzes, and paying attention to lecture slides for the midterms. For the final review the midterms, worksheets and maybe the quiz and you'll do amazing. Literally practice his provided material and go to office hours/IC!
Second time with Maibaum. I loved 152 with him! Probably one of my favorite classes I've taken yet. I left the classes with a strong grasp on the topics discussed. Aleks way more bearable than 142. The tests did go into some topics that were more "niche" that he mentions like once, but I covered all of it so it wasn't bad. Love this guy!
He had great lectures but did not plan them in order of when we learned the topics on Aleks so I felt like I was always behind. Very test heavy and the quizzes were very few questions but a large percentage of my grade.
I took 143 and 153 with Prof. Maibaum, and he is one of the most likeable professors I have had so far. He really cares about your understanding of the material, which can lead to long stretches of him answering someone's off-topic question. His tests are difficult, but not tricky. If you come to class and pay attention, you'll be fine.
The best lecturer! He's super funny, caring, and would tell jokes right before each midterm. His tests can be kinda tough and the curves are competitive, but he really does try his best to help you understand. Take advantage of his amazing office hours.
Delightful professor, quite difficult, especially the tests but a good grade is achievable. Do not wait until 10pm on sunday to complete Aleks...
He is a great professor and very organized, however his lectures do not tell you how to solve problems. Definitely will have to depend on YouTube how to solve. However, he is always reachable any moment. His exams are difficult and short, there are quizzes and ofc ALEKS. His lectures are just VERY dense.
Genuinely an amazing professor, helpful and extremely knowledgeable. His lectures are engaging and very well explained, and his attitude towards teaching is hard to find in intro classes. Personally, I did horrible on the midterms, so make sure to study. Recommend using ALEKS problems to study, also make sure to attend as many lectures as possible.
Prof Maibaum is goated! Though lectures are kind of slow, he's really good at explaining things and entertains any questions students have. He's a really sweet, funny guy who always tells jokes before an exam. The exams sometimes have some funky questions, but if you understand the lecture content and worksheet problems, you should be fine.
Professor Maibaum is soo funny and kind. He's super easy to talk to and always answers questions really enthusiastically. His lectures are soemtimes too detailed so they can be kind of boring but he explains the concepts really well and his exams are easy too. ALEKs is pretty annoying but that's apart of the Gen Chem series.
Made it easy to learn chemistry concepts covered in the class. Exams were also manageable, but the cumulative final was definitely a little more challenging than the midterms. If you do the homework on time, pay attention in lecture & quiz section, and take / review your notes you should be chilling.
personally didn't find the way he taught to be very intuitive, and his lectures were a bit long winded and unnecessary. just read the textbook instead.
The lectures for this class were a little boring, but they had the information that was on the tests, which is good. Professor Maibaum is very nice and friendly and was very willing to answer any questions that were asked. I really liked the class overall.
Overly calculation-heavy exams that are essentially only free response questions, a total of 2-3 non-free responses throughout the entire quarter. Fairly good lecturer, has a problem with taking up comically large amounts of class time answering irrelevant questions. Grade composition is quite forgiving despite the hard exams.
meanders through student questions, disregard for student complaints- claimed in class that because were UW students midterms should be "boring" but his midterms were HARD. has a midterm WEEK TEN and then a final week 11. he also spends more time on quantum mechanics than other professors teaching this class, if you can take a different professor.
I really enjoyed Professor Maibaum's section. He's a great lecturer so you actually learn a lot in section compared to some other classes at UW. The pacing of the course itself was a little weird, but not terrible. The midterms were fast paced but completely doable, don't cheat your way through ALEKS and you'll have no problem on them.
Great prof, some people think his tests are tough but if you look back at them after you take them you realize that he will never ask you a question he didn't explicitly go over in lecture or that wasn't just like a question in the worksheets, Also super accessible on ed and responds to student questions really fast, fair tests for sure as well.
Very knowledgeable and passionate about chemistry. Tests are fast-paced and you will need to know how to solve problems quickly, but they are reasonable and will tend to not throw questions at you that we have not discussed. He is great with communicating and a quick responder to questions, just stay on top of the Aleks + lectures!
The professor is enthusiastic with teaching and I found overall the class is manageable. Of the STEM classes it's on the easier side for a weed-out class. Labs are simpler than you'd think at first glance. Midterms are very calculations based unlike others where it's multiple choice. Only thing I didn't liked was the pacing of lectures.
Chem 142 is always tough, but Maibum's exams felt especially difficult, with questions I didn't feel prepared for. He was fun and engaging in lectures but often rambled. Overall, he's funny and understanding. If you take his class, use his office hours and the TAs frequently to keep up with the material.
I had Maibaum for the entire gen chem series, and I thought he was incredible! He is very passionate about chemistry and is very friendly! His lectures and exams are very straightforward— he never tried to trick us on exams. Doing the worksheets and ALEKS topics will be SUPER helpful.
Professor Maibaum's lectures were very engaging. Although there are no past exams, his questions are drawn from the lecture slides, so pay close attention to every detail. Any example he walks through in lecture is fair game. Utilize the TA's, whether for lab reports or clarification on content. Redoing worksheets from quiz section is also helpful!
The professors lectures are long and focus on background knowledge rather than problem-solving. The course has a high curve, but exams are challenging and some TAs grade tuff. Attendance to lectures is not mandatory, but labs are, and you WILL get point taken away if you do anything wrong.
His lectures are very long, information heavy, and have little to no example problems. 90% of the test is based on lecture slides. There are no practice exams or study guides available and his tests are nearly impossible to complete in time (so it's a shot in the dark). You basically have to teach yourself on how to actually use the material.
literally the best chem prof I've had. Tests are super fair and similar to worksheets, explains concepts really well and good at answering questions. Lectures are honestly engaging and he made me like the Chem 152 material. Material is hard so participate and don't skip. But prof is great if you flop it's on you.
great guy, Lectures felt very "pointless" till the end where he got to the point on the last slide. Would explain why for most of the time, and then goes over one example. Office hours were just him reiterating the lectures. Exams were hard with not a lot of room for partial credit but similar to discussion worksheets. Good prof would take again.
I'm not great at chem, but prof. Maibaum was a good lecturer and always so thoughtful. He cares a lot about his students and if you work hard you can certainly get a better grade than me lol. I really appreciate how much effort he puts into trying to communicate and connect with students, and he is just a very nice guy. Also I like his accent.
Not my favorite prof. I didn't like how he taught and set up the exams because there were no practice exams. Lectures sometimes felt useless, and you had to put in a lot of time outside to understand the concepts.
Lutz's tests are very difficult (average scores for Midterm 2 and the final were around 50%) but gives a VERY generous curve. In Chem 142 with Craig a 98% got you a 4.0 whereas in Lutz it was around a 91%. Lectures are okay but he definitely is not efficient with his time, quiz section is the most helpful, especially if you have a good TA.
He was funny and enthusiastic, definitely made me enjoy chemistry even more. Other than the fact that the first midterm did not go well with trick questions, I'd say overall it was great! I'm also glad I improved in my second midterm and final, it was thanks to professor Maibaum's advice to change something in my study method:)
Fun professor, difficult tests (especially in CHEM 153) but generous curve
One of the best professors ever. He is extremely caring and sweet. His lectures are easy to follow along and have a good flow and structure. He explains concepts in the most simplest ways possible so it is easy to understand. Even though his course was accelerated, his explanations were easier to understand than that of regular general chem.
Good slides and lectures overall, however, lectures were sometimes pretty boring since he tends to get side-tracked easily, answering questions irrelevant to course material. He's very caring and passionate about the material. His exams are pretty difficult (especially in CHEM 153), but the curve is pretty forgiving.
Lutz is a professor who shows a deep passion for chemistry which is very rare in an introductory chemistry course. He always brings enthusiasm to each lecture and is very caring at his office hours. He also tells jokes. Just know that his midterms and final are certainly difficult, but the curve is forgiving.
No practice exams but Professor Maibaum gives you absolutely every resource you could possibly need with the worksheets, quizzes, and optional textbook problems. There is no running out of material to study. His exams, while challenging, are completely fair and there aren't trick questions. Studying for midterms should only take a couple hours.
Professor Maibaum clearly cares a lot about his students. I had an issue with the new lab system. He stayed after class to go over the error with me and was clearly concerned. I got great grades on the midterm when I did the practice problems he recommends. Your grade is two midterms, a final, ALEKS problems weekly, lab, and a weekly quiz.
Maibaum's lectures contain essential material, so only use the textbook for a supplement. Tests are very difficult. Do NOT save ALEKS for 10 pm. Pie Progress is huge, and make sure you go to his office hours, those are the MOST helpful. Recommended that you have some AP/IB knowledge before taking 143. It is very fast-paced. He's very caring.
I've had Lutz Maibum for the entire gen chem series. He is a caring, passionate professor who will provide clear answers to questions, but lectures are the very verbose, and you will have to listen carefully to pick out the most important parts. No study guides, no practice exams, and labs/ALEKS/discussion sections rarely match up with the lecture.
Very clear expectations throughout the class, very well-structured, lectures go super in depth into topics and are explained very nicely, the occasional in-class demonstration is always really fun as well Lutz makes gen chem a class i looked forward to which is not what i expected, the one thing is that labs are 3 hours and weekly
Take the accelerated series, much more forgiving grading than regular series and Maibaum is an excellent professor
Lutz is a great professor who was engaging and usually explained concepts very well! I would consider myself on the lower end of knowledge in 143 as I had less experience with chemistry in high school, but the curve was generous and I did surprisingly well despite low midterm scores. Definitely would recommend 143 over 142 if you are ready!
Liked his slides, those were good for grasping contents and felt to-the-point. Enjoyed his lectures, answered students' questions during them in a nice way. He seemed chill and told jokes before beginning exams. Difficult class for me, but what's new. Still had great experience learning from him.
