She is a great teacher and you get used to her accent. You have to give mini-presentations, but they are cake. Her tests are pretty easy, but you need to study. You don't need to come to class, however, it is helpful.
She's very nice to everyone and wants you to do well in her class. You need to study for her tests and going to class is a must.
Luz's Micro Theory class is a good one. She is a good prof and her dry sense of humor is great. If taken MWF, don't miss class--big topics are covered in a short amt. of time
Her accent takes some getting used to, but she is so sweet.
Luz was the first St. Thomas professor I ever had and boy was I impressed! She's the kind of prof that makes you want to become an econ major! I can still imagine her saying "Marginal Propensity to Consume" with her accent- it's great!! :)
Luz is great -- she really wants her students to do well. In order to do well on the tests, though, you have to do all the reading and doing the homework is a MUST, even though she doesn't grade it.
Top Notch Professor. Takes pride in her work and it shows in her lectures and her student's final grades. You would do yourself injustice by not taking her at some point in your St Thomas Career.
As my second econ prof. I was very impressed. She was incredibly nice and I agree that she cares about her students. Really try your homework and understand your notes and you will do fine.
Her Micro theory class is a good one. SHe loves the information and is always willing to help. Her tests are on the tough side, but if you are a major and need to learn the information this is the prof to take.
Buy 18 folders if you take her because you'll get 5 useless handouts per day. Class time is brutal, although not mandatory. Very stubborn teacher. No room for alternative interpretations. She cares about you as a student, but you will not like her class. Beware!
I did not expect this was to be easy, but Luz made it worse. Class time was extremely boring, it is definitely a good thing Luz does not take attendance. Exams were very challenging and unfair, often covering topics that were not even presented in class or in the book.
A very bad class to take. Luz spends too much time giving out useless handouts. Exams are pretty tough. Overall, the class was very boring.
During the entire semester, she lacked organization, often forgetting things. Her homework assignments are very long and boring, yet she expects you to know all of it. The two midterm exams were not bad at all, but the final exam was unfair, containing topics that we never even discussed in class. I wouldn't recommend her.
Boring... Going to class was a total waste of time. Exams ranged from really easy to impossible, Luz is very inconsistent. You are better off taking another class and/or different professor.
Luz cant teach Economics or Calculus, which made the class very hard. She is not a very good instructor, so again you have to teach yourself most of the material. I thought this class was a total waste of time.
Man...you guys must not have studied or something, that's why you are complaining. I had her and she was great. If you don't understand, just stop by her office and she'll answer your questions. If you go to class unprepared and do no studying, then you'd probably think the class is boring and useless.
I have had Luz for two classes, and would take her again. Tests are hard, but they are the same format as the tests. If you don't understand anything she is very willing to help, and loves when students come to her office to better understand the class. I would definitely recommend taking her, her class is not as boring as other econ clases.
I have taken over 6 econ courses at UST and this was the worst. Luz should try to make the material she teaches a bit more interesting. The only good thing about the class was that she never took attendance.
What a waste of time. I learned nothing from this class. Luz just isn't a good lecturer.
It's funny that the only people who claim Luz is a good prof say things like "tests are the same format as the tests." It shows how much he/she learned in her class. I had Luz for macroecon and it was terrible. Avoid.
One of the worst classes you can take with Luz. She cannot even speak English, let alone teach economics. You will regret taking her class.
Luz is tough and not the best at lecturing, but if you go to her and ask for help, she is very willing to help.
She's not as bad as everyone's making her out to be. Her tests are fair. She's really cares for the students. She explains things thoroughly, and I enjoyed her accent: it made me listen more carefully. I'd take her again!
Where to begin... she has a hostile attitude, is probably the worst lecturer in the econ department, and exams are so unfair that in one of them the average was a D. Luz apparently thinks that econ is the only class we have. Extremely unhelpful with the required course project as well.
I'm an econ major, thus I don't think I'm being unfair when I say that Luz is not a good professor in comparison to other great people in her same department. Basically, Luz believes that grades in her class are not subjective, but they really are. I refuse to take a class with her again.
The worst prof ever!
Her class redefines hell, that's all I'm going to say.
OK, I'm not that great in Calculus, but come on this is Economics. There were so many formulas from advanced calculus that she never explained that eventually the whole class started failing her exams. Sure, she is nice if you are the only person in the class who is passing!
There was a time when Luz was one of my favorite professors, but everything changed after she got tenured. Now, she basically expects you to learn all the material by yourself. In her class, you feel you keep falling behind. How incredibly sad.
One word, yikes!
In her class, the best you can do is to pray for nightfall. She never finishes on time. Bring a pillow.
Not that bad! She's tough, you have to try, but I've learned a lot from her (not without a lot of outside class time). Definitely take macro before you take her for micro - she moves quickly. She expects a lot but if you study, go to her for help and do the homework (out of the textbook) you will learn a lot and get a good grade.
She's a nice person but very difficult to follow and her exams cover a lot of material and she expects you to memorize all the formulas. There is a TON of calc used in this class
She has a strong accent but she's always willing to explain things again if you don't understand her. She's always willing to help outside of class. Quizzes are pretty easy: basic problems from the book. Exams are tough. Study alot! Do all of the homework. Some of the exam questions come right from the hw.
This professor is unreasonable. Her tests are impossible, and she doesn't care, even though more than half of the class is failing! If you are an econ major, take the class with someone else.
Luz puts the "l" in lament!
Saamoco is fine as long as you deal with her from a distance of at least 5,000 miles away.
Luz is great. I loved her class, everyone else seemed to like her too, and do well. Also, she made it interesting. I love how people said she's hard to understand. It's so typical of UST. Her English is perfect. Christ, grow up.
Bad x 1,000,000
Econ with Luz was hard and you have to study, but I loved her! she is so willing to help you and re-explain things if you need it. tests are hard, but i you study before, it will be fine
She is the prototype of the "Don't care about anything but my research" model. If you are great in econ, then take her class. Otherwise, do not expect any help from her.
her accent is pretty strong and is difficult to understand at times in class. optional homework, one short writing assignment, difficult exams, optional attendance. overall, not bad but probably take someone else.
NIGHTMARE! Luz should have never been a teacher. She has no personality and she will never explain anything she teaches. Also, she grades really hard on everything. You will get a lower grade than you deserve, trust me! Please nobody take this class so she will be fired from st. thomas. BEWARE! not kidding i learned NOTHING from her. She will fail
I used to love, love economics. Now, I hate it because of Luz. I got an A- in the class because I went to the department's tutors. If you are just starting at UST, do yourself a favor and take Microeconomics with someone else.
Luz is without a doubt an F- professor.
Three words: rude, obnoxious, unfair.
It's econ people, which means it's common sense! I am a math major and the math is so NOT advanced calc--you have to determine the slope (rise over run), the graphs are on graph paper, count the boxes people! She has an accent, but easy to get used to. She has weekly quizzes but they really prepare you for the test, so make sure to study from them.
I really don't know why people don't like her! I think she is an awesome prof. She explains everything clearly and is very willing to help if you have questions. She gives out occasional extra credit too. I would really recommend her to anyone who needs to take the basic econ classes, especially if your not a econ major. She's a really great prof!
It's funny how the students who defend Luz don't really seem to know the content of econ courses. So, to clarify, 252 covers basic microeconomics, while 315 covers advanced empirical methods; the latter DOES have lots of calculus. Yes, if you take Luz for 252 she is ok because come on it is an easy class, but she is unreasonable in 315.
I did well in micro because I studied on my own. Luz was not helpful at all. But, she definitely knows a great deal about economics. She just needs to make a stronger effort to cater to her students' needs.
The worst UST teacher ever
I really liked Luz! I hate econ and I thought she did a great job explaining things. Very knowledgable about economics and tried to interest us in the content. I recommend her for an Econ Professor!
Luz has an overall negative attitude. To do well, be ready to suck up to her and be on her good side, else she will grade you harshly. Even during class, she plays favorite big time. Save yourself a headache, take this class with someone else.
She goes way too fast. Seems like she expects to cover the entire book when no one else does. I like her as a person, but her teaching skills suck.
Had her for 252 and 352 and she is awesome! Her class made me add an econ minor. You'll do fine in her class if you just do the homework and/or not a moron like the two people below this. Easy class for anyone with any common sense. She's super nice and really wants you to learn...take her!
Disorganized and unflexible. In comparison to other econ instructors in her department, she doesn't even come close.
Luz is very nice and is willing to help you inside and outside of class. If you go to class everyday, do the homework and study your notes, the class is very easy.
Not worth the aggravation of having to deal with her for an entire semester. Her accent will be the least of your worries.
Provided little help with the required course project. Exams were tough but she gave us back a few points here and there. Not terrible I guess.
Almost went crazy to get an A-. Luz is really stuck up and thinks she knows it all. She is alright for intro econ courses as long as you study and don't expect her to help you.
I have Luz for microecon and she is the best. At first I was scared because of her thick accent, but she is a very nice person. If you are confused with anything she teaches just ask her and she is very helpful. She also has a Ph.d in economics so she knows what she is talking about. To get an A you have to out some time in, but I recommend her
It is always interesting to see how ignorant the students who praise Luz are. What econ professor at UST is not required to have a Ph.D.? They all do! Unfortunately, even with her Ph.D., Luz denotes a profound inability to teach the most basic concepts.
She is great at explaining. Quite honestly, if you don't understand what she is explaining, you have some sort of learning disability. Her tests are easy if you study, and the homework is self explanatory.
Prof Saavedra is a great prof. She loves when people ask questions, and is more than willing to help explain things. As long as you do the homework and pay attention during class and do minimal studying, the tests should be no problem for you. I really enjoyed this class.
Never makes any sense
No offense to Luz, but this class sucks. If you don't like Econ, don't take it from her.
Shes a great teacher, shes fun, energetic, engaging, and overall a good teacher, shes easy to talk to, shes very flexible with late assignments, her tests are hard but manageable. Everything makes sense, if you do not get it, shes always willing to explain hundreds of times.
Really enjoyed this class with Luz. She makes funny comments throughout the class. Some lectures can get a little long, but she puts all her notes on the board and is pretty clear in explaining them. Had 2 tests and a final and gives you a study guide for each! Would recommend.
Luz is an easy grader, just make sure you actually listen and take notes. 2 tests and a final, not bad at all!
Bad teacher, intellectually confused, and 90% of the time brings an excessively negative attitude to class. Her hackneyed examples aren't too helpful. Exams are ok if you study.
Dr. Luz can be confusing at times. However, if you are not an econ major, the class really isn't that difficult. There's weekly homework assignments that you turn in for grading. Also, the worksheets and problems Prof Luz goes through in class are pretty much EXACT to what's on the exams with different data numbers.
Luz is very nice lady. However, her class is pretty tough. The directions for projects and assignments are all over the place which causes a lot of confusion. The grammar she uses is also hard to understand. Exams are close to impossible because of all the information you have to memorize. If you don't have to take this class, don't.
Would not recommend to anyone just looking to get past econ
Good professor, but could have had a better teaching method.
Luz really wants you to do well. She writes everything out on the board for clarity and encourages office visits. Her tests suck because she always switches the angle that she asks the question from- makes it confusing. Tests are majority part of your grade but if you participate enough she bumps your grade up as unofficial extra credit. Ok prof.
3 tests which make up about 80% of your grade, if you are a bad test taker don't take this class. Luz is helpful in clarifying any concepts that you don't understand, and she loves when you attend her office hours. Lectures did get long and aren't mandatory but you need to go in order to keep up. Not much homework but she is hard to understand
Luz was an overall good human being and I enjoyed her a lot - but she's a tough Econ prof. She gives study guides for the exams but even if you complete them, the exams are a hit or miss. If you are looking to maintain your GPA, I would probably suggest a different prof.
She is a good teacher and encourage students go to ask her questions. Three big exams and one personal presentation. She is strict so you need to do the preview work before her class. Exams are based on homeworks. Every class time you get group discussion work and worksheet.
class is pretty tough, but overall she's a great professor and goes out of her way to be nice to students. Very helpful in office hours but just make sure you show her you put some effort in before you ask her something. one big group project and one take home test involve the comp. program stata, which is awful, so make sure to see her in time
Luz was a great prof. Clear, concise, easy to access, and completely fair. Those who struggle in Forecasting tend to come in without enough Economics concepts, and should certainly look to apply themselves more in the principles courses. Excellent course, no complaints.
Luz is the most disorganized professor I ever had at UST. She expects you to be psychic with her unclear directions. She blames students for everything and refuses to accept her many shortcomings. Maybe she should get a different job.
Luz is very kind and she's got a fun sense of humor. She really cares about class participation because she wants her students to succeed. However, it can be quite hard to do well since your grade consists of a small # of tests over topics that are barely covered in class. Additionally, studying is difficult due to her being very disorganized.
Luz was a really nice person, but I personally didn't vibe with her teaching style. She is a very intense woman, and I found myself getting headaches after her lectures (which were hard to follow) because she talked so loud. Her tests were disproportionately difficult compared to the class material, in my opinion. I would recommend someone else.
Dr. Saavedra is an incredible professor and is by far one of the best in the economics department. She has high expectations for her students, but works extremely hard for her students to meet those expectations and for them to grasp concepts. She is thorough and only assigns homework when she finds that it is helpful.
She is very clear on what she expects on homework and gives good examples during class about what will be on the tests and homework. The homework is long but she encourages you to work in groups so its really not that bad.
Had her for forecasting. Was a miserable class. She says you need the book but if you know anyone who has it you can use if for the one HW assignment. Semester-long group project which takes forever. "Take-home" test which requires the most work I've put toward anything in my life. Overall, not a great class, and it's so boring too.
I love luz, don't take the other professor who is "supposedly" better according to this stupid site. I don't like school at all and she got me through the course. TAKE HER NOT CHECK.
Don't understand why this professor has such a low RMP score. I am an average student that was intimidated to take Forecasting. I took the J-term course & the class was pretty easy. The material can be complicated, but she was SO helpful if you don't understand. The midterm was cake if you pay attention. Definitely recommend this professor
Sav was such a caring professor, if you show her you care about the course, she is more than willing to help you and make sure you succeed. I took forecasting over J-term and really recommend it. The exams were medium difficulty but as long as you study the notes/study guide you should be able to get an A-/b+. Love her!!!!
Luz is a very nice woman but her course is very difficult. She cares about students but the material is very difficult to follow and after an hour and a half of lecture twice a week you will get burned out very fast. Very Very nice but i would not take her course unless you want to relearn on you're own because you can't follow her lecture.
Terrible teacher, who isn't even a full professor. Was very unhelpful, and left me to fall behind with absolutely no assistance no matter how much I asked. Was ridiculous, given that I paid so much for the course to receive such a subpar and elementary level experience.
I have taken Luz for Microeconomics and Forecasting. Overall, she is a great person and a good professor. She is difficult to understand at times because of her Columbian accent, but you get used to it in about a week. Make sure you show up to class and participate as much as possible. I would take her again.
Very poor professor, avoid at ALL costs. She does not have the personality or care to guide students and assist them with problems, and went so far as to just shut me down, and stop responding to my emails. Extremely immature and childish professor, AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
Dr. Saavedra is a great professor and very accessible, but often goes too quickly through things, specifically all of our work on Stata. I had never used Stata before taking her class and I can confidently say that at the end of this course, I still don't know how to use it.
Luz has been an amazing teacher for econometrics which is often considered a difficult course. While expect the homework load to be a lot, she has well-rounded lectures that explain not only the content but the reason why we should learn it. She is a surprisingly easy grader on exams. I would definitely recommend her for econometrics.
Honestly, I loved her class. Her teaching style was clear, and she did her best to make sure that everyone understood what was going on before she moved on, and always encouraged questions. ASK QUESTIONS, she loves it and she answers them well.
While Econometrics is no easy course, if you brush up on your statistics, Luz does all she can to make it as easy as possible! Super friendly and would recommend for any economics major at UST
I loved having Prof. Saavedra for Econometrics. This is intrinsically a very difficult class, but she is incredibly helpful in getting her students through the content, especially if you ask her for help. She was the sweetest professor, and possibly my favorite economics professor I've had. I recommend taking her class.
Prof. Saavedra makes what I expected a nasty course to be at least manageable. The class was hard, but Prof Saavedra made herself accessible and willing to help me during office hours and always was looking for students to ask questions whenever possible. It was still a hard class, but she made it enjoyable.
I took Microeconomics with Dr. Saavedra and loved it! Some concepts were difficult at first, but we did many examples in class to fully understand the material. Paying attention in class and doing the online homework will prepare you well for the tests. She also gives a lot of partial credit on tests, which is nice.
Really good professor. Understanding of how difficult the material can be and very patient almost too patient with her students. She is an aquarius if this helps any of you. Lets you do corrections on tests and makes it almost impossible to fail her class, it comes down to a matter if you want to pass or not.
I took this class over J-term. I had a good experience and would highly recommend this course to students who are considering taking it over J-Term. Professor Luz did her best to cover as much material as possible in the short time. The midterm was easy, but the final is a bit harder. There's a large group project, but it's not that bad.
Professor Saavedra cares about her students. She is flexible with office hours, and is always willing to help! I recommend her to anyone.
Luz may like economics but she just can't teach it. Her lectures are all over the place and don't really cover 90% of the material that she ends up putting on exams. At a personal level, she isn't very approachable and gets frustrated easily.
Sometimes her lectures would be hard to follow. Her tests didn't always reflect the lecture. The homework took large amounts of points off if you didn't get it right the first time. On the other hand, she's really accessible outside of class. She knows what she's talking about, but her lectures are hard to follow unless you have econ experience.
Saavedra is one of my favorite profs. She is very kind and is always asking for feedback on how she can help students learn better. Very accessible outside of class. The class was hard-ish due to the nature of the course, not due to her teaching. I love econ and I really enjoyed this class. Also, she's quite funny if you like dry humor.
She lectures the full time in class but her lectures are all over the place. She is a very nice person but does not know how to teach. Her exams are extremely difficult but she will give partial credit. She assigns loads of homework. There was homework due almost every day including weekends. The homework also never connected to her lectures.
Luz is an incredible professor. People who have a bad experience with her don't fully embrace the class. You are in school to learn. Luz provided excellent lectures, a lot of encouragement, and clear feedback to help keep me on track. If you put in the effort, you will get an A. It is very clear that Luz wants the best for her students.
Professor Luz is hit-or-miss, but I found unstuck ai helpful for understanding tricky forecasting concepts. The class requires active participation, and the workload can be heavy, but put in the effort and you'll do well.
I really enjoyed having Professor Saavedra. She was very kind and Caring and she explained things in a very simple way. Although her lectures weren't always completely focused I still found myself interested in a lot of the topics and the way she taught them. I would definitely recommend to go to her office hours cause she will grade a lot lighter.
Luz is incredible. She holds a high level of integrity for the course, herself and us as students. She cares about teaching the intuition behind the topic, and for students to truly comprehend the material - not just memorize it. However, this requires us to be curious and serious. She will make you think about who you want to be as a person.
The semester seemed endless. Luz cannot explain concepts well and her short fuse is at times borderline unprofessional. What bothered me the most is how super, super disorganized she is and she loses things easily and gets frustrated even though it was her fault to begin with. All in all, no bueno.
