Speaks very fast and doesnt elaborate on anything. May as well just go over the slides since thats all we do in class.
ly ngo treats us as if we are high school students and to be honest she doesn't teach very well. She talks too fast and doesn't give us time to write the notes. It is like she is reviewing for herself more than she is teaching us. However, she is definitely a better option than the other 1201 chem teachers.
Shes really genuinely sweet and it comes out throughout the semester. She brought candy for kids who were willing to answer out loud and emailed us ways we could better prepare for her exams and admits that the course is content heavy and intense. She cares, but obviously its hard and she tries her best to help students get through
She is a very smart lady which is why she is not such a good professor. She teaches too fast. Personally, I think she knows the information so well that she does not realize that the rest of us are confused. She does not explain why anything is the way it is, just how to get to the answer, which is extremely confusing.
Worst teacher I have ever taken. You cannot understand her because she has a very strong accent. Rather than teaching the information, she goes through powerpoints and solves equations. She makes exams due in the middle of the day rather than midnight. Barely gives any point opportunities. Only 12 homework and 4 exams, that's it. Take someone else.
She offers a lot of resources to students who are struggling; she truly want her students to succeed. The homeworks are harder than the test, but the test themselves are heavily weighted. She posts the lectures and provides practice problems, practice exams, and study guides. Overall, a good professor that is easy to work with!
Prof ngo's course requires very minimal work, but that comes back to bite you. Homework is due maybe once a month, and tests are given once a month online, but the final exam is in person which is where most people's grade tanked. She teaches so fast, no time to comprehend, only copy. Self-taught myself this whole course.
AVOID
Does not give many assignments. Therefore you do the homework (which is graded for correctness) then take the exams online. But when it comes time to the final I feel she prepares the least. If someone didnt know how to do a problem in class she would simply skip it.
minimal notes, when it comes to the final you wont know what going on even if u went to every class
She posts a lot of resources and goes over notes in depth. However she moves too fast for you to actually take notes and you cannot understand her. Her tests are take home and not proctored, which did not help me prepare for the final. I felt absolutely clueless on the final. Still waiting on final results but dont expect much
Avoid Taking--- Ngo has such a sweet character, but has a horrible teaching style. In class, she reads off a powerpoint and works problems way too fast for anyone to actually comprehend-- only have time to copy down. Tests were online and not proctored (great), but the final is in person. We all were extremely unprepared, but there is a curve.
She halfway through the semester chose random people in the class to solve questions on the board. She flies through new material to where you can't event take notes. Homework counts for accuracy and there's no resources to help with it. She barely reviewed for the final, if someone in the class wouldn't solve the problem she skipped it. DO NOT TAK
The bad reviews are very deceiving. Professor Ngo is very understanding and there were many times where she pushed due dates back. While her lectures can be hard to follow sometimes, all of her tests were online and not proctored. The only grade that is going to matter will be the final; everything else is easy for a 100. She is an easy A in Chem.
Mrs. Ly honestly wasn't bad. If you go to class and review for the test everything is manageable. Only one assignment per week for homework usually so there is a lot of free time to study. HW is harder than the test. Only bad thing is the test are rarely curved.
I loved Dr. Ly's class, and despite the many negative reviews, she is a great listener and will help you if you need it. She has extensive homework assignments, but they make you very prepared for the exams. Her lecture notes are very well organized, and her lectures in class are easy to follow if you pay attention. She also gives a lot of bonus!!!
I LOVED THIS LAB. Although it is a lot of physical handwriting, it is more doable and understandable than BIOL 1208 and 1209. My TA was very kind and an easy grader. Midterm is not too bad. Lab is ran by TA, but she is very involved and appears a few times in each lab. Directions for assignments are communicated make sure you pay attention!
Don't trust the other reviews, they're hating fr. If you did well in CHEM 1201, you won't struggle too much with this class. She acts tough, but she cares. Every test is curved. I ended with over a 100 in her class for CHEM 1201 and 1202 and I'm no where near the smartest in the room.
My TA was amazing. Shoutout to Spencer Watts. Dr. Ngo had a pretty straight forward lab. Quiz due before lab, turn in data analysis and data pages for a grade. The midterm and final on the other hand are each worth 25% of your final grade. It will definitely make or break your grade. It is literally a gen chem exam, memorize your formulas.
Like most lab classes, your grade depends on the lab TA you get. My section's TA was unfriendly, and no matter how hard anyone tried on the homework, she would always find some little thing to take points off for. Dr. Ngo was also rude to us for seemingly no reason. If you get her don't worry too much about it, but if you can, take someone else.
FOR CHEM 2364! Lab depends on the TAs, if you have a good TA, you can end up with a pretty god grade. For this class we could not see what we got wrong on the Moodle quizzes unless you went to her office hours. Makes no sense if you are just trying to see why you were wrong or you're trying to study. Midterm and Final require outside studying.
Dr. Ly seemed rude but once you swing by her office you realize she really is there to help and will spend the time to make sure you understand the material. She gave us a good amount of extra points and dropped some of our lowest grade items. O chem lab was definitely doable with her and I did not feel completely overwhelmed like in gen chem.
All assignments are for correctness. She'll give you practice problems but does not release any correct answers or guide you on how the process should look. She comes off rude and like she thinks she is better than you. Afraid of her lecture getting stolen. goes over her slides very quickly and will not let you take pictures.
Unfriendly and unapproachable. The daily quizzes on moodle are niche and often ambiguous. Very limited resources to help you succeed.
If you try, you will succeed. This class did not take much effort as I studied like 2 days before the test and got above a 100 on all of them. She curves the tests heavily. I didnt go to class and just went to SI sessions to learn the material. I am definitely not the smartest person in the class either. Take her over Hogan as I learned a lot
I love Dr. Ly, she is really nice and funny. She will work with you if you don't understand and answer all questions in class. I do recommend going to class because she gives good notes from her powerpoints. She doesn't like a lot of talking during lectures, but as long as you pay attention and actually want to learn she's great.
Look, if you are someone who will go to classes and put in the time needed to study and finish homework, you will totally get an A. Sometimes her lectures can be confusing but just watch a YouTube video afterward and you should be fine. I find her in-class presentations and example problems SUPER helpful. If you do struggle just go to office hours!
This class is a breeze if you actually attend the lectures. Her PowerPoint are very helpful and even has opportunities to practice. She can be difficult to understand because of her accent, but overall she teaches the material very well. If you put in the time, this class is easy.
Had to put so much work into this class for no reason. her lectures overcomplicated simple topics. She gave us and exam less than a week before the final, not very compassionate.
I liked Dr. Ly, but I can see how people found her lectures confusing: She has a heavy accent and gives long homework assignments on Pearson. There were roughly 20 questions per homework and most questions have multiple parts. She doesn't curve the exams very much, but she gives bonus quizzes and wants you to do well. I enjoyed Dr. Ly's class!
TA will make or break this one. My TA, Spencer Watts, was by far the best TA I've ever had so it made this a lot easier than it was for most. She graded leniently and always added feedback to wrong answers. The final grade is mainly based on Data Analysis of all 20 labs and pre-lab quizzes. The midterm and final are each 20% but aren't that hard.
If you go to class most of the time and pay attention it isn't too hard. Graded kind of weird but it worked in the student's favor so it was fine.
CHEM 1212 is most taught by TAs, but Dr. Ngo is one of the coordinators. She is difficult to understand, never responds to emails, and is sometimes rude in person. She will walk into lab at any given moment and always has something to say. She pretty much has no impact on your experience, but I would not take her again.
Made the class harder than it should have been. Basically stopped showing up to lectures when I found out they were useless and just taught myself the material instead. SI sessions were a life saver because she doesn't know how to teach. Homework was a third of the grade so make sure you do it.
Her grading system makes no sense but you WILL pass her class. Her lectures are super wordy, so are her notes. She can come off as mean during lecture and when she emails. JUST DEAL WITH IT BECAUSE YOU WILL PASS! However if you really want to understand material and not just pass- go to SI she had a great one I owe him my life- or just take hogan
Her power points are very detailed but LONG and includes many practice problems which are helpful. She lectures very fast and it can be hard to keep up. Her grading scale is weird but GREAT and the only reason why I'm rating her so high. I made 60s/70s on all exams and 100s on most the homeowork and got an A. Take her if you struggle with chem!!
Chem 1212 was fun but you have a quiz before every lab and a lot of writing in manual. It is fun and teaches you a lot but it is very time consuming. I emailed her a few times regarding quizzes that seemed wrong and she was no help. The final did not tell me my grade so I emailed her asking. No response. The lab is fun but a lot comes with it.
She herself is a very blunt person but very nice if you get to know her. For lab, my TA was amazing, and all we did was just get the Data Analysis papers and quizzes done on time, with my TA gladly answering any questions I had about the DA. I believe Ngo has the best TA's and structure to her course as I always knew what I was doing.
Dr. Ly was an ok teacher. GO TO EVERY SI SESSION, he saved my chem life (the res. When she makes mistakes on the quizzes or homework she will give you your grade back. Also gave plenty of bonus points. Just make sure you do every homework and quiz!! Attend class because once she knows your face she is more likely to help you and give you points.
Dr. Ly is a great professor if you are willing to work. I was hesitant at the beginning of the semester but her class became one of my favorites. Her exams are hard but doable I got a 110 on every one. She doesn't curve but there are so many extra credit opportunities
Dr. Ngo was an ALRIGHT professor but it is quite impossible to fail her class! Took her for the Summer semester and she had 3 exams and final (in-person on scantron) and lots of homework. She gives a little bit of bonus. I thought I was gonna fail her class because I made 20-30/100 on all of the exams but good on the hw, but saw I passed with a C.
The labs were pretty fun if you do them with the right people. Honestly, they were all pretty easy, but it can be frustrating when you make an error. On the downside, this course requires a LOT of work outside of class with data analysis and quizzes for every experiment. Ngo herself would randomly show up to your lab, and she's pretty intimidating.
Dr. Ly is a great professor. She can be harsh but she only wants respect. Exams are a direct reflection of the material covered during lectures and are doable. You will have to put in the work but if you do that this is not an overly difficult course. She also gives lots of easy grades including attendance so that really help your overall grade.
So mean. The grading scale is good though and tests don't take up all your grade but her homework assignments are so difficult and take forever. She has a very heavy accent and it's really hard to understand her lectures because she goes so fast and does not answer questions. But definitely the rudest professor I've ever had.
I took CHEM 1005. all lectures and quizzes and homework assignments were easy if you don't let it pile up. She does have a heavy accent but if you go to class and take notes you should be perfectly fine.
Class is definitely mandatory, she gives a large bonus on each test and gives practice tests before each test but this class is not very easy!
Ngo gets a lot of hate on here and it's lowkey warranted but not all super true. I've never been a great chem student (barely made it through in HS and took Hogan for Chem 1 so I didn't have a great foundation) and I got an A on every test. She can be tough/cold in lectures but class is def doable if you are willing to put in some work. Underrated!
Dr. Ly is a good teacher. She uses worksheets that are easily accessible, which makes it easier to learn. She posts practice exams that are just like the exams that she gives us.
Dr. Ly is strict but a great professor that wants you to learn. The homework was tedious, but definitely the best chem teacher I've ever had. She has an accent but is really not hard to understand, just go to lecture and do the practice and you will pass. Exams are short and easy with bonus Q's. Gives candy if you get an A!
Only big grades are tests, and the homework. It's a lot of work, but they do help you study for exams. Whenever she slips, up it's funny. She also has an accent but you get used to it. We have a theory she's a Russian sleeper agent because she won't let you say her last name.
She was difficult to understand at some points but her lecture notes were posted on Moodle. Does take attendance, but I honestly would recommend going to the class because if I did miss a class I found myself extremely confused. Fair curves on the test and really helpful practice tests. Can be aggressive for no phones & no talking in class.
attendance is mandatory, although not graded. I can say that i went to about a handful of lectures the whole semester and still passed with a B. Reads off of powerpoints and speaking for myself for any class i can't learn like that so i did have to teach myself.
AVOID IF POSSIBLE!! I was stressed all semester because I thought I was going to fail this pass.
I felt like she was a Good professor, she taught the information well and would explain if we had questions. She offers bonus points in every test and her study guides are extremely helpful. Would definitely offer this class to nursing students who are taking chemistry.
she is not that good of a professor, practice exams are nothing like her exams, has advanced chem in her lectures, doesn't give any extra credit besides 1 bonus on her exams, if people talk she skips the slides, makes sure she uses every minute of her class, it is a overwhelming course
I loved Dr. Ly, though she is a bit strict. No talking is tolerated in her class, but it made it a lot easier to focus for the lecture. Weekly quizzes and 3 homeworks before each exam that are LONG, but really help with the exams. Exams are almost the exact same questions as practice exams and homeworks. Do the work and you'll get a great grade.
Dr. Ngo, sometimes comes off hostile but shes a funny woman. All quizzes and homework are given on moodle. She gives practice exams that are very similar to the exams, but they dont have answers, she expects you to know them.I recommend going to the si for exam reviews. She does attendance and occasional bonus if you attend but its not for a grade.
She can be scary in person, but her class was pretty easy. Her lectures have a ton of practice problems, and her exams are basic. She also curves like every exam.
Had her for both 1201 and 1202 and it was a breeze. A+ in both. Never went to class. Her exams were practically a replica of the practice exams. Just be prepared for a lot of homework because it's worth 30% of your grade but the homework helped a lot for the exams. She can be scary sometimes but the class was very doable if you put some effort in.
She is very strict and has a bit of a heavy accent but don't let that scare you her course can seem hard an complex but if you know how to do the homework you should be fine just make sure to put in some type of effort and her practice exams are the exact same as her exams just with different numbers she might slightly mix it up but nothing crazy.
she comes off very hard but she is really dedicated to teaching her students and gives them as much aid as she can. do not try to talk in her class because she will threaten to kick you out and the slides that she uses are very helpful when studying. GO TO CLASS! she gives a lot of extra credit, so i recommend doing it because it boosts the grade.
Homework is your most important thing. Some take a while to do but it is worth the highest percentage of your grade. I don't understand the bad rep. with her, she's very straightforward and stern. That's it. She isn't some kind of monster and just expects decent behavior and grades from her students. Utilize the resources she gives and lectures.
THIS IS THE ONLY PRE-NURSING PROFESSOR FOR CHEM 1005!! If you don't like professors who have an accent then don't take her. Lots of homework that takes over 3+ hours. Weekly quizzes. Attendance is mandatory, if you take a picture of the QR code and send it to the group chat and she finds out she will start finding different ways to take attendance.
I never exchanged words with her. The TA you get is the sole factor on how the grading portion goes for you. The experiments start off easy, then 11-14 are like a gauntlet that tests your will to live, and the rest were like before except a little more work. Post lab work was very time consuming but simple enough if you are proficient in chemistry.
You don't usually see her as her sections are taught by TA's, but if you need to email her she is available and responds pretty quick. Midterm and Final are difficult but if you understand the material on the quizzes you'll do fine. Emails can be a bit condescending but don't take it personally lol. Just show up and do your work and you'll do fine.
this class is run by TAs and I was lucky to get a good one. some of the TAs are extremely picky on how they grade but they are very consistent on the things they want you to do. also, compared to other lab courses, this chem lab course was easily the most fun lab i've taken so far. midterms and finals are hard, but just review the study guide.
She's the best CHEM 1005 professor, especially for nursing students. She really cares and gives helpful ways to learn the material. She might seem strict at first, but it's only because she wants us to focus and do well. She's super helpful and explains things clearly. I highly recommend her!
She does not show any care to her students but luckily the class is easy enough to get past her harshness.
Very difficult and hard to work with. She gives reviews for the exam, that don't cover anything on the exam. She assigns an insane amount of work and will email you any day and time. (no respect for time).
Everyone always says she's harsh and assigns a lot of work... but I feel like it all balances out at the end. I feel like she cares about her students; that's why she assigns so much homework, so we can get enough practice. If you go to Si sessions and stay on task, you will be fine.
I think Dr. Ly is an exceptional 1201 instructor. She is strict when it comes to talking in her class but everything else is fine, a strong accent but you tend to get used to it after the first 2 days of class, she gives alot of extra credit and homework that helps balance your grade out in the end, can fail an exam and still pass her class.
As much as I did not like Dr. Ly in the beginning of the semester I realized she truly does want us to pass and she really helped me understand chem. Yes she assigns a lot of homework, but doing the homework is the main way I studied and I did good on all the tests. Her exams are just like the practice exams.
awful, if you want to understand your professor dont take her. Assigns so much homework and knows that people fail her exams and doesn't care. Teaches like a high school teacher and calls students out in class for "slouching" in their chairs or having their computers out (her slides are online). She tells the class "I'll wait" if someone talks
Freshman Year I was extremly nervous coming in and being placed in her class after I came on here and looked at her reviews. She is a little hard to understand at some points in heer lectures, but overall she is really good and the class is fairly easy if you try. So many bonus opportunities if you do all the homework and quizzes you should pass.
Do all homework, quizzes, and when you study read the back of each chapter where is says "what to know", go on pearsons e text and search up the bullet points and you will do perfectly fine.
Take her!! I failed my first exam and I have an 100 A+ in the class right now. She gives so much extra credit and the practice exams that she gives are almost exactly like each test. Only bad thing is that there is alot of typos on practice exams and normal exams but she gives back the credit.
She's not the best chem professor but she is definitely not the worst. If you try in her class you will pass. I will say her lectures can be a little boring and hard because she has a very thick accent which is the only reason why I wouldn't take her again. There are a lot of assignments but if you do well on them they help out your grade a lot.
This class is heavily dependent on your TA. I had an amazing TA, and she was so sweet and understanding, but my friends had TAs that were harsh graders. This class isn't really hard and does eventually line with with what you're learning in CHEM 1202. Just do your work and actually try in the class and you'll be fine.
Pay attention, fast pace
i love Dr. Ly tbh. Her class is easy as long as you do all your work, show up to class every time, and study before tests. Her grading is extremely clear and organized. She also cancelled class before thanksgiving break and changes class to virtual when it gets cold which I appreciated. She is strict but reasonable!
Do not let her scare you, as long as you go to class, pay attention, and do the work/study, you will pass. She explains things clearly in lecture and is open to questions. She also gives LOTS of extra credit and the final is only worth 15% of your grade! She can be hard to reach in person. The class is difficult but she is a great professor.
Do not take Ly Ngo if you are on the premed route. On the very first day of class she tried to instill fear in us by calling herself, “the devil.” Ly constantly compares herself to her students and doesn't create a very positive space in her classroom. Good luck on her tests because the study guides are completely different than the actual tests.
Dr. Ly was a good professor. She moved a little fast. She has an accent, but it isn't hard to understand. Tests weren't hard as long as you studied, and SOME practice tests were exactly like test. If you miss a class, you'll fall behind. Don't let her intimidate you; show up, pay attention, and COMPLETE THE HOMEWORK & GROUP WORK. Please STUDY!
I enjoyed Dr. Ly's class. She's strict, but also reasonable. The class is easy as long as you show up to class and pay attention, complete all of your work, and study before the exams. I barely passed the exams, besides 2; however, if you do extra credit & other work she assigns, you'll be fine! She also cancelled class before thanksgiving break!
I didn't think this class was awful, and I enjoyed all of the extra credit opportunities, but Dr Ly herself was not a good instructor. She terrified her students on the first day of class with how she described both herself and her class, and her practice exams are not similar to the exams themselves. I was extremely unprepared for the final.
I took this class as a prerequisite for the second time and started confident and it quickly changed. The class requires a lot of independent learning, and you need to stay on top of assignments and quizzes. She provides all the materials you need to do well, but her teaching style might not be for everyone.
Her lectures can be very confusing but if you dont understand the lecture, she posts them before class. It is important that you do all of her homework and extra credit. I failed all of the exams with high Fs but did all of the extra credit, homework, and quizzes and ended with a B in the class. She sets you up to do well in the class.
She can be extremely rude and misunderstanding making the class environment uncomfortable. A lot of the information you can teach to yourself. If you need help use your on campus resources.
Her class is amazing! For instance, her exams are identical to the practice exams she gives in class with the exception of her final. Prepare for the final to be difficult as it is department wide, it will be nothing like the practice exam she gives. However, if you take advantage of the extra credit she gives during the semester you will do fine.
