HER CLASS IS VERY DEMANDING, BUT SHE REALLY TAKES HER TIME TO HELP YOU, WHETHER IT BE ABOUT HER CLASS OUR ANYTHING ELSE, SHES GREAT TEACHER
Very demanding class, but extremely beneficial to your writing skills
OH man fo sureeeeee your gonna be doing some work. You gotta get involved in the class or youll have no chance of a good grade. Shes really awesome though, sang in a blues band.
I am so appreciative for her class. (Though I've flaked recently.) She is an amazing teacher who really helps her students progress as writers. Some people can't handle how demanding she is. She also really teaches you writing to survive through college.
LYDIA is by far one of the greatest english teachers i've had. she's helpful and dedicated to her teachiings. if you need help, she'll go the extra mile just to help. to improve your writing skills, she's the one to help. the class is a little challenging
she grades hard but really tells you your mistake and teaches you how to improve on it.. really nice and teaches very well...
she's tough, but very helpful
Lydia is truely a great teacher... goes above and beyond to help you learn and improve. Very organised and dedicated. What other professor writes almost 2 pages of comments for each paper!!! Awesome
I learned alot in her class...she's really nice and approachable, she helped me a lot in improving my writing skills. She is worth the hard work.
really nice teacher... although class is hard and she expects alot from u but u learn so much more than from other teachers who are easier. and one cool thing, she feeds us alot, we have potluck like everyweek... REALLY RECOMMEND IT!!!!!!
She's a great teacher in touch with the current culture. She's vibrant and loves sports especially basketball. If you want the grade then take Martinez or someone else. If you want to improve your writing and articulation then take her but only a few a's
This teacher demands a lot of work but she prepares you for college level writing. She grades tough but fair and honestly. She is very cool and loves sports. She also dedicates much time to her students and has many office hours. An excellent teacher!
she is very funny, vivid teacher. Her assignment is not easy. you have to do a lot of research and reading on to fill the standard. but she really helps alot for ur writing.
Like everyone says, she's funny, nice etc.I think she sort of has favorites.Favorites being people that speak up a lot, even though they're usually mindless babbling idiots/kiss asses. She grades hard but gives you pointers and many chances to improve.
She is the best english teacher i ever had. She is very enthusiastic about her work and it is very apparent when she teaches. If you want to take a class where you will learn a lot with a hillarious teacher, i totally recommend her.
The one and only...you'll have a blast in her class! Hard but reasonable. Best teacher ever.

She makes you work hard but by the end of the quarter you writing skills will be better just remember to keep up with the reading and listserv and go to her for help she is always willing to help you improve.
She is excellent. Her teaching is very clear. Instead of lectures she lets us discover on our own through invigorating discussions. Try to get to know her and you'll see she really loves her students, no favorites.
Lydia's not a hot pepper, she's dynamite! Really fun, energetic teacher, expects you to have done your work, has amazing insights into literature. She's also friendly and caring.
she is a great teacher, shes very fun...
SHe is such a cool , fun, energetic teacher. She is really helpful and anyone can pass her class as long as you try.
she's SO COOL! she makes you think the class will be hard, then hella people drop. that class isn't bad at all! i actually enjoy going to that class. plus, she has a potluck @ her house at the end of the quarter
This professor is a really cool person. At the beginning of the quarter she makes the class seem to be really hard, but it's really not. She loves to help you out and she really cares about her students. At the end of the quarter theres a pot luck.
If you want to learn english take this course. She only expects what she teaches you in class, therefore any prior knowledge will be reviewed or learned during her class. Fun class, fun teacher.
fun class to take but there is a lot of work to do. however Lydia tales forever amd a day to return any papers or quizzes. you would think that a teacher who assigns so much work could grade them efficiently
Great literature teacher, but this was a writing class. She takes forever to return papers and quizzes, so it is had to learn from your mistakes. Quizzes are given WEEKS after material is covered, then they are either not returned, or returned so late tha
This was probably the most fun i've ever have in a English class.Awesome teacher, take her if u want to learn. Not an easy A, but you will learn. She is always willing to meet with you outside of class. She is a bit of slacker when it comes to returning work
SHE IS SOO AWESOME!!! I loved being in her class. She is ALWAYS smiling, energetic and hyper! Lydia is one of the BEST instructors at De Anza!!What are you waiting for??!? GO meet her!!
she is very clear and energetic. you would enjoy her whole class period. plus, she has great passion for helping students.
if you look for a class to have fun and actually learn something, this is the right class, only problem though is she is kind of tough grader, but still a very good professor.
Fun but tough teacher. This course is her specialty. Asks a lot & challenges student, but does become a bit easier towards the end. You'll learn tremendous amount of stuff from her. She will expand your mind and give you another perspective on literature.
awesome, fun class.. she grades pretty hard but allows students to re-write 2 out of 3 papers.. do all the work and u'll get at least B.. not that hard to get an A either.. speak to her if u have problems.. she's very helpful.. thanks lydia!
not hard. just dont procrastinate. she helps you out. papers have a period for peer editing to help before turning in final draft. takes forever to return papers.
SHE IS THE BEST! She is a tough professor, but very helpful. If you actually want to learn take her class. Her class is also really fun. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
She will give you option to re-write your essay but do it right the first time because she gives you LOTS of work. DO NOT fall behind!! and if you dont follow her instruction she will B***ch on you however her instruction is very clear.
the best that there could be. she is great and loves to help you when you need and and the the work is easy. if you do the work that you will pass the class
felt like an eight grade english class
She is the greatest! She is young and understands youth. Don´t fall behind and this will be easy. Enjoy her party at the end of the quarter... She makes grammar sound like Nelly´s song. SHE IS THE GREATEST!!! I recommend Lydia.
Lydia is very warm, kind, and caring, and does not give up on you, if you are having problems. She meets with each student on an individual basis, and I loved her the way she pulls the class together to work as a team. Go! Go! Lydia!
Aighte Son..so chech this out.she is OFF THE HIZZLE...FASHIZZLE..just think..how many professors out there wouldd know what i be sayin'..but she does....so if you don't take her class....you missin out....want an easy A..go take somebody else.
Got a B, but this one time I don't mind. Thx for all the help lyd ;)
This class is so cool. We r learning pop culture, our units are advertising, television/film, music, and sports. This class is fun, but u better participate. Papers are hard, but she is EXTREMELY helpful. I recommend her to anybody, if ur not good in english don't be intimated cuz she shows u basics
Lydia is an awsome teacher and really gets the student involved and wanting to learn, she also takes time to help with getting students on to a higher education. I highly recomend it for anybody serios about transfering or english
Shes an excellent teacher if you want to learn. If you just want an easy A this is not the class.
The best English teacher who is willing to go out on a limb to help her students. Although the amount of work is a lot, students benefit and learn from it a great deal. By far, the coolest teacher at DA.
Very feministic, divorced, ****y. You'll be working your ass out.
Cute teacher. Hard class. Take the class if you're willing to take the time to improve upon your writing skills.
Lydia is one of the best English teachers on the planet. I don't find her class hard, but the average person might think so. You will have fun in class, just be sure to pay attention and turn in your papers on time!

The class is childlish and she's pretty weird. Her insecurities about herself and her teaching become really evident and it's corny and sad how she tries to reinforce herself in front of the class. ("don't you hate it when OTHER teachers..."). There are DEFINITELY better options for ewrt classes.
Personally, I have no doubts about her teaching skills. However, she has very limited time for students who needed extra help on their assignment. I do advise future students to consider this problem as it will affect you. You will be fighting for time to talk to her even in her office hours.
lydia is helpful fun and makes the class an interesting atmosphere to come to everyday. she is happy and upbeat and gets her point across all assignments are clearly stated and she helps as much as she can. wish there were more teachers on campus like her go to the pot lucks they're fun!
She is very dedicated to teaching students, but she makes you work for your grade. I've learned a lot in this class.
Very helpful class if you want to actually learn English. She spends a lot of time grading the essays and gives you a typed full page of comments back with each one.
greatest teacher in the world do all work and will get a passing grade.( written by Rajit Ravichandran.)
She truly cares about helping her students and making them successful. She's funny, and opens the skills of analysis up to her students. There is a lot of work to be done, but they ultimately help you. Just keep on top of your work and you'll be fine. She's wonderful, I recommend everyone take her.
Lydia is awesome. If you're a strong writer you'll only have to worry about making deadlines. If you're not, you'll improve drastically by the end of the quarter. She's so funny and easy to talk to. She knows what she's talking about. Do the required work and you'll get a nice grade.
She is very strict abt formatting & correcting the essays. But then u learn so much from her.u actually feel that u r improving.B ready 2 do a lot of research, reading & writing. It is difficult 2 understand wat she wants in her papers but wen u start riting its clear.Ask questions. She helps.
She might be considered a good teacher by many, but the work load is unbelivable. There is the writing itselft and there is all the work behind it, such as scientific experiments, social sciences questionaires, etc. If you are willing to jeopardise your GPA, go right ahead...
Lydia's such a COOL & great teacher! My writing improved A LOT but be prepared to work your butt off. I did and got an A. Lots of writing to do but, hey, it is an English class. Ask her for help and she is SUPER helpful. She will really guide u to the right direction. :) Take her if want to learn.
She's a really cool teacher and she does help you out a lot. Just follow her direction and follow her advice and you'll do fine. Oh yeah and her parties are bomb.
Fairly easy class, I mean you'll have to try most likely, but isn't that life? She'll definitely improve your writing. She's pretty cool personality-wise. Don't take her if you want an easy A, the class requires thinking.
By far the greatest teacher on the planet! Shes very helpful in and out of the classroom. The work isn't too easy, which is good. She does challenge you to work and better yourself. And she has the best parties. Totally cool teacher.
Lydia is such an AWSOME teacher! she is SO laid back in class but expects you to listen and take notes. be prepped to write a lot in her calss! my writings improved A LOT after her calss she teaches grammer that i have never learned before. she is VERY helpful too. She will tell you what you need to improve.Take her class already!
She is AWESOME! I loved her. She teaches really well and she gave us A LOT OF useful advice. She's so funny and often on a tangent at times, but you can get along with her so well. Her teaching strategies are great and it helped me improve my writing a whole lot. :D She's the best. I HIGHLY recommend her!
Best teacher for any EWRT class! If you want to become a better writer, she is the teacher to have. She has a special way of making the writing class fun, yet worthwhile for your knowledge! 1st place english teacher in my eyes!
great teacher, learned alot.

One of the best teachers at De Anza. By no means a free ride, but you learn a lot and leave much better off than you started. thanks lydia!
lydia is so incredibly intelligent and helpful. she not only is a great teacher but is also a very understanding person and she's an awesome friend. she's one of those teachers that you can actually hang out with outside of class. i definitely enjoyed her class and i'm sure most people did as well.
Do NOT expect A in her class. A lot of work, three basic papers, research paper, final in-class paper, several message posts on the readings and quizzes. She grades tough especially you must turn in the work on time!!!! When you arrive the class five minutes late, the paper will be considered as LATE!!! Students are supposed to write as professiona
She is very intelligent and smart. Although she is tough, she is actually a reasonable, understanding, and nice person. She offers transfer student personal statements workshops. Her frank character is very attractive in class.I enjoyed laughing in her class. In terms of essay, students should think critically and be brave to reveal your own opinions
She is very intelligent. The class discussions were interesting and fun! She's really nice and helpful! I enjoyed her class! interesting essay topics. She is very specific in grading and it really helped me out a lot. She teaches very clear! TAKE HER FOR EWRT 2!
She's not very clear, because if you want students to learn, don't take the good thesis and try to fix them. Use the thesis that need work, and try to fix those in class instead! She needs to keep her personal buisness to herself. I don't care about how she met her boyfriend!!! TEACH US INSTEAD! She talks to me like I'm dumb, and makes me feel dumb
She doesn't treat 1 A classes like 1 A/ She treats us like 1 c english class. Most students in our class our ESL students. Teach us at the level that we are suppose to be taught. Very confusing in her class. Talks down to certain students. I don't like the unequal treatment.
I love Lydia!! She is a really, nice, and helpful English instructor and she teaches it really well. I love her friendly character and I considered her a friend as well. The essays in that class are challenging including the quizzes but you have to put in a lot of effort in order to get at least a B. I want to have Lydia again for English 2!! YAY!!
Lydia is not easy, and she won’t cut you any slack. She gives you a taste of what university it like. She also gives you more attentions without the PHD attitude. If you work hard you learn. If you slack you crash and burn. She can fix stupid, but she can help you with your english.
She's the best!
she has mood swings.
No doubt, she is smart and I appreciated her lectures because they were informative, BUT she blew me off when I tried to ask questions to clarify my understanding - isn't that part of teaching? I dropped after 3 weeks. Being a good teacher means that you focus on increasing your student's understanding rather than show-off how smart you are!
I love going to her class, it's always full of laughs. She always keeps you entertained so youre not bored, she has a lot energy. She grades our essays as if we're in eng 1a, so we have a feel of what we'll get when we get into eng 1a, which makes perfect sense..she's an awesome teacher!
I loved taking this class!!! Lydia is fun and very knowlegable. She hepled provoke great discussions and the class time flew by!!!!
She's a very informative and interesting teacher. Participate and establish your name for her so that you get a lot of points. If you're planning to take a lot of other classes, i recommend a different prof. because she's hard and there's a lot of work. Six essays, do all of your internet message posts and the quizs are hard. But she's very helpful
Even though she grades hard, I found this class to be a blast. I worked pretty hard to get an A- but I think it was well worth it. I felt that I learned a lot after taking her.
Lydia was a wonderful instructor. I worked pretty hard to earn my B+. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun in her class. I loved writing essays on pop culture. I really recommend her. She has a lot to offer and is very very very helpful. :)
I took the honors class and got a A. I LOVED coming to this class, it literally made my day. Its a 5 day class but we only show up 4/12 Fridays. You have to post on discussion boards but thats easy. 4 essays, she helped me A LOT in my writing. We basically read a book and just discussed in class everyday. GREAT class! Take HEARN!!!
I enjoyed being in her classes for EWRT 1A, EWRT 1B, and EWRT 2, she is really cool, helpful, and friendly! You have to put in a long time in order to get a good grade in her class, if you push hard enough, the best grade you can get is B or probably higher. I will miss the good times I have her for class such as the discussions and the laughs! =D
really, really hard. well, i guess thats just because i took the course for summer quarter. DONT TAKE HER CLASS DURING SUMMER QUARTER!!! an essay every week. super hard... but otherwise, her grading was really strict and you had to write essays her way.
best teacher EVER!!!
dude, like this is 1 hell of a class!she makes SURE u understand.id hella recommend her. this class does NOT have the"richer gets richer,& poor gets poorer"concept,so dont worry if ur thinking that ppl w/ better english skills earn more,ur wrong!she goes by the way you see your material, & what you write bout it.if taken, let other classes be simple!
This. Professor is great. She is extremely helpful. I would recommend her if you need a confidence booster/stress reliever because the class is not busy work it is actually insiteful. The structure of essays will be mastered in this course.
She was very helpful and fun. I realy enjoyed her class. My writing improved very much and she was very clear on what she wanted for assignments.Take her class and you'll be happy to do that.
She is one of the best teachers I've ever had at De Anza. She brings poetry to it's knees with a modern-classic feel. Encouraging, knowlegable, if you like poetry you should take her as a must!
The best teacher I've had at De Anza. Passionate about her students. Extremely helpful. Prepare to fall in love with English. Lots of work, but there's a lot of leniency and opportunity to make up your grade. Very fair.
I'm not the best writer but if you put some time and effort into your essay you will get an A. There is a lot of work to do. So just keep up with the work because all of that goes toward your essays. She improved my writing a lot. I love going into her class because it didn't feel like a normal class because she treats everyone like a friend.
She's a great teacher, is extremely helpful and sets aside time for her students. She grades hard, but it's only to help you. If you're looking for a bit of a challenge yet fun at the same time, her class is the one!
1 word. 4 Letters. GOOD
She Will chanllenge you
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND her because 1.She knows what she's doing. 2.All her class work gets you very prepared & improved for English/Writing. 3.She's very helpful in answering questions & checks up on every student's work. 4.She explains directions very well. 5.She has a good personality unlike other boring professors. 6.You'll learn a lot from her.
She is a great teacher! helped me so much in my writing skills! make sure you turn your essays on time, and ask for help when you need it! she is so nice and very approachable about anything!
She's very good at teaching, and she's always there if you need help with writing.
Lydia is hands down one of the best professors at De Anza. Her desire to challenge and motivate students is really inspiring. The class is extremely interesting, three essays, one final, and one book to read the entire quarter! The book turned out to be a favorite of mine, it's really interesting. I wish there were more teachers like her! :)
Absolutely amazing professor. She always helped me whenever i needed help. One of my friends recommended me to take lydia and after taking her class I eased through EWRT 1A and EWRT 1B. I would recommend this professor to anyone who is planning to take EWRT 1A or EWRT 1B.
GREAT teacher! Keeps things really interesting. You write 4 papers, and I took a hybrid class so most of the hw was online :) she explains things really well, and is motivated to help you. you're allowed 5 absences and after you get a grade reduction, but she justifies her reasons for that. take her if you get a chance! :D
I LOVED HER! her dedication to teaching is admirable. you don't come across a teacher like her often. she gave us a full typed page of feedback for every essay! Keep in mind, she is NOT easy. you have to work hard for an A. you have grammar quizzes and reading quizzes, write 4 papers. I enjoyed the class beyond words personally, will take her again!
Lydia doesn't play around! She doesn't just give out A's! You have to work hard and EARN them so if you like to slack off and miss class then don't take her. Her lectures aren't boring and she keeps the class interesting and respects other people's opinions and beliefs and makes it clear that others should do the same.I totally recommend her!
The best teacher in De Anza! She keeps things very interesting and doesn't just tell us 'you have to do this, and that, and that' but she explains why she does that. Pretty cool instructor. Take her if you can!
This is for 1C Honors section. Hearn is a super helpful and enthusiastic teacher. She was trying some experimental grading and teaching techniques in our class and ended up basically letting us run the class. The class wasn't easy - there was some pretty intensive reading and writing - but I learned so much about writing thanks to her feedback.
She is AWESOME! She is very passionate about her students and the way she teaches you reflects that. She is very articulate and thorough. By no means she is easy, but if you focus and pay attention, you will do good. Also, be sure to do all of your assignments. It pays off.
BEST TEACHER. Interacts with students alot. Coursework-super organised. Attendance-compulsory(unless you seek permission in advance) Not that difficult as its rated here. Turn in your work on time. Do the readings. The only essay that was tough was the in-class essay exam which kind of pulled down my grade to an A- Take her and you will learn alot
SHE IS AMAZINGGGG!!!! First I was really scared to take her but when i actually took her class, it was really worth it. she helps you a lot with essays and grammar. I recommend taking her for 1A and 2.
I recommend Prof Hearn if you are up for challenges and improvements. She really pushes her students to think further in critical thinking class. This class is by far the most challenging class I have had, but it further enhanced my writing skills!
great personality, clear, helpful
Great teacher. Lots of assigned reading but she never really quizzes on it. Easy to get B's on the essays but difficult to get A's. She gives great feedback on essays and will definitely help you improve your writing but if you just want an easy A this class isn't for you.
Great teacher! Took her online and learned a lot.
Best Professor ever! Make you learn and improve alot that you can expected! And she is very helpful and outgoing. her class was interesting!
Very good Instructor. You will definitely come out a better writer, and helps you think more analytically. If you are serious about improving the way you write and think, then take her class(es)!
She is so confusing. She jumps from one text to another and expects you know everything. She goes over way to many texts and you can't learn anything in depth from the text because she keeps moving to something new. I haven't learned very much other than the summary of some of the texts we've gone over.
Lydia is the best English instructor at De Anza. She is very helpful when you need some help with your papers and is always available during her office hours when you need to see her. She keeps the class interesting by making us read books that are actually NOT boring. She gives people chances to bring their grade up. Good instructor.
Awesome professor, she responds to emails fast and is very helpful. There's a lot of reading involved so don't fall behind. Overall I liked the online course and I learned a lot about writing in this course. Take this professor.
ONLINE: responds quickly to e-mails and posts weekly assignments of readings and discussion forums on Catalyst. Free Course Reader so no buying a textbook - all short stories or poems. End of course focuses on a novel, so just do the readings and keep notes. All analytical work so get used to that writing format or else you'll do poorly.
Lydia is one of the best professors in De Anza's English Department. She cares about her students (she went out of her way to personally help me). I took her online course and if there was an assignment I was confused about, I'd email her and she responded no later than a day. She is a professional at what she does and would definitely recommend.
This teacher is the best in DeAnza. I love her so much. If you want to have fun and learned by the best must taker! she makes class very interesting.
Best online class I have taken. Directions were clear and thorough and the YouTube lectures with the slides are very helpful. She is easy to reach and is willing to help you do well in her class.
Lydia is so amazing! First of all she has a great personality, never a dull moment in her class. She will always be there for you, and has a great sense of humor. Do expect to read, but the books are actually really interesting. She's a hard grader, but you'll feel like you're actually learning something. I do HIGHLY RECOMMEND her.
This was my first class as an English major, I was so nervous but Lydia completely changed how I look at lit. All you need to do to pass is read everything, take notes, participate in class. You're not required to read everything closely but expects you to know what your talking about in class. Very helpful, very clear, VERY NICE. TAKE HER CLASS!!!
I've taken 7 English classes so far at De Anza (2 w/ Lydia) and of the seven classes, I've had 5 excellent teachers, but Lydia is by far the BEST! Her exams are hard and her lectures go fast, but if you actually try, you'll do fine. Hw10% participation10% essay(s)35% 2 exams45%. She's brilliant, understanding, genuine, and hilarious. TAKE HER!
have this Best Eng prof for online 1B in spring2016 !!!Take this class u have to catch up all4-unit reading assigmts for 4papers total,do all forum discussions&take lec and novel quizzes(offer ex crds). That's all!! Tips to get A:try not to lose many points from the quizzes(easy), give quotas for paper gradings. so take time then easyA for sure!!
best teacher you can have for English. She's is great, and she cares about her students. As long as you show effort she will work with you. The essays aren't hard at all, and as long as you turn in your assigned work on time you will do great. she makes the class fun and its never boring. She loves her students and is easy to reach. i loved her
She really cares about her students but you need to put in effort! She helps in any way she can! I took her for a remedial class as well and I was nervous about taking EWRT1A but she helped me get through it and I learned a lot. I highly recommend taking her class!
She is great! Her class was not super easy, but it was not super hard. Lydia is awesome.
Lydia is a very good professor. Though, her format is quite specific. She allows students to do most of the discussion, which, while it is nice, can have some drawbacks if you'd like to focus on certain aspects of the texts. You do read quite a lot, but it's not hard as long as you follow the schedule on the syllabus and don't procrastinate.
I enjoyed her class. She gave us leeway over what we wanted to write our papers about which allowed my creativity to run wild. I got an A, but it was tough and she grades hard and has lots of criticism. This was difficult for me at times, as I'm not used to having my writing criticized but ultimately, it made me a better writer.
Lydia has such a great way to get us to get her class involved, BUT she does require a lot of work which you do see pay off. I have taken 2 classes with her and is the English teacher I've has so far. She has really great readings and is very much discussed in class. She gives you everything that will be on the online quiz SO MAKE SURE YOU SHOW UP
Lydia is a fantastic educator. Her course required a mountain of reading, but she is very realistic about what's possible and creates opportunities to catch up. She grades papers pretty tough but gives plenty of feedback to help with your writing skills. Very open-minded and understanding about personal situations that take you out of class.
Her online ewrt 2 has A LOT OF HW compared to my older english onlince class. She also grades hard so watch out. Lots of reading and tasks due every other day. Donreally like her system. I also feel that she isnt very understanding and assumes that you didnt do your previous work because of a low score. Not every understanding and not lenient.
If you respect her, she'll respect you. Apart from the reading, which is typical in any college course, she is an amazing professor and real passionate in her profession. Really recommend taking her if you plan on getting an A in English. :)
Lydia Is one of the best professors at De Anza! I have taken four quarters with her because obviously her lectures and grading are awesome! don't be lazy because yes there are papers and readings that need to be done, but what you put in is really what you get. She challenges her students to be better writers, she is not a tough grader!!
I loved this class! She likes to hear new ideas or takes on poetry. She also provides a pdf with all the poems, but sometimes I didn't read the poem before class and it was all good. Overall, she's a great teacher and her class was incredibly fun.
Professor Hearn is super smart. I took her EWRT2 honors class and I learned a TON. She will definitely make you work for the high grade, but it's totally worth it.
Lydia Hearn is a great professor! She is very open-minded and intelligent. I am a better writer because of her help and awesome feedback! I would totally reccommend her class if you are trying to learn and improve on your writing skills! I wouldnt reccommend the class if you want an easy A! Good Luck!
You can tell she loves her job and cares about her students. Lydia wants to see her students succeed in class. She does give a load of readings but she usually goes over them during lecture. I got a B+ in her class I could have gotten an A if I applied myself more but she is great! JUST DO YOUR PAPERS AND READINGS!
Lydia is honestly so amazing. It isn't hard to get a good grade as long as you actually turn in your work and try. (Lydia is hella chill!) In high school I felt like my English classes were pointless, but Lydia actually has taught me the skills I need to be prepared for college writing. You're blessed if you take her! I took her for 211, 1A, & 2H.
I strongly dislike writing papers, but Professor Hearn made the task much less painful by providing solid online lectures, giving xtra credit opportunities alongside most of the essay (this really helps if you struggle to write an A paper) and she always gives detailed feedback. She is very caring and wants her students to succeed. Highly recommend
I would definitely recommend taking Lydia Hearn's classes. Her classes are informative, which is very helpful when taking notes. There are many extra credit opportunities. Participating in class and attendance are taken into consideration for the overall grade.
Lydia is not a bad professor. However, if you are looking for an easy A or to receive an A, it is not the easiest class to do so. English is one of my best subjects and somehow I can't get better than a B grade. Do with that as you will.
Super tough grader. Not an easy A class. In an online class, we had an assignment due every other day. Even though I had almost 100% in assignments, her grading of papers screwed my grade and I ended up with B (she also had to curve the grade otherwise there would be no A's). Doesn't explain properly what does she want in her paper
This is not a blow off class at all. Take her if you really want to learn how to write properly the rest of your college career. At first I struggled, but by the end I was writing so much better than when I started the class. Ask for help early if you need it and she will tell you exactly how to improve your grade. She responds to email fast.
She makes you work for the high grade, but it's totally worth it.
She is an amazing teacher. Yes her class does require quite a bit of reading. Her lectures come in both youtube video and powerpoint, you can choose either one. Her quizzes are all from lectures so do pay attention when you watch the videos or powerpoint, same for essay directions. Ask her question, she gave me fast and helpful tips.
Class is easy but she gives a lot of work. Discussions, quizzes, timed essays. Multiple assignments due every other day. Unless it's a holiday, you get them due back to back
Lydia is a great professor and her lectures are really critical for future assignments. Lots of reading but the discussions and tests are easy as long as you take notes during lectures and read the assigned books. This was the only English class that I took that the lectures went by quick and entertaining.
There isn't any hw, aside from reading assigned texts, which is expected of a lit class. Discussions are easy to understand and papersexams are easy as long as you read and pay attention. Attendance is taken, but class passes by fast. She also is very generous with EC and responds very fast if you need her. Undoubtedly one of the best professors.
Lydia is kind and very accessible. Lots of reading, but her classes are geared towards English majors, so that's not surprising. Workload was manageable but I have to admit people weren't doing the reading. Her lectures are great though, if you go to class it should be a pretty easy A. Take her if you're an English major.
Lydia is absolutely INCREDIBLE. One of the most well-rounded and inclusive literature teachers at De Anza college. Lydia is dedicated to her students and devotes an incredible amount of energy to her classes and cohorts. I had Lydia as a prof for two different classes this year and am SO grateful that i was able to learn from her. highly recommend
Lydia Hearn is an amazing teacher, she is very understanding of students, she may be a tough grader but only because she cares about students understanding and pushes them to do their best. I would definitely take her class!
She is frustrating. Her discussion posts arent posted until less than 24 hours before its due or even on the same night, giving you only a couple of hours to post. Its required to have your cameras on despite actually being in class. If we werent going to be in class, why are we attending it? What matters is the quality of our assignments.
I took two classes with Professor Hearn and she is amazing. She is a good lecturer, a caring professor who wants you to succeed, and someone who respects you as a person. Her classes were fun even over zoom. She is very accessible and gives good feedback on your papers. You will learn a lot in her class as long as you work hard and do the readings.
Lydia gives inspirational lectures, she also cares about the personal wellbeing of students. Though this is an online class, she tried her best to create a harmonious community to communicate. Besides from the recorded lecture, there's two zoom discussions each week, we share our thoughts and do analysis on the readings together.
She's such a pleasant person! You read 3 books and watch/read other misc things, all of which were enjoyable! You write 3 essays as well. You have options when it comes to assignments, allowing for flexibility. Zoom meetings were optional and counted towards the misc points category, but I was able to get my required points w/o them. I recommend!
Lots of work. She's super caring and responds fast. Some extra credit. Weirdly vague instructions for papers so it was confusing to know for sure what she wanted. Superrr tough grader. She is so picky and deducts points for the smallest things. Just make sure to really say everything in papers, even if you think something is obvious say it anyway!!
Took her over the summer so it was constant work; I'm sure this class is manageable normally. 100 word discussion posts every M-Thurs, 4 or 5 tutorial quizzes, three 3-page essays (lowest score is dropped so you only have to do 2 if you like your grade) and one research paper which is a 6-page rewrite of one of your previous essays.
Lydia was my favorite professor of the quarter! Material: very interesting & relevant. Required class on campus once a week but always let us out early & very flexible about the way you spent your time in class. Always available to help! Short lectures: entertaining & informative. Overall caring instructor who puts love & passion into teaching.
I was super nervous about taking an English course but her passion for teaching, amazing attitude, and immense support was beyond helpful throughout the quarter. She provides so much help for composing essays, an engrossed selection of readings, and short lecture videos to improve your writing. If you're looking for a English professor, choose her!
I won't lie there was around 4 or 7 assignments each week BUT they were all helpful and easy. She is a great teacher and is super flexible with you and easy to contact. I learned so much in her class, I was ok at English in high school but it was always boring until I took her class. My papers and essays improved so much! She's super nice as well.
This was a summer class so it was a lot of work but it's doable. I had 2 other classes and was able to complete all my work. She gives good feedback and grades fairly (although some may argue she's a tough grader). She has weekly pages showing you when assignments are due to stay on top of your work.
Recommended. She gives very helpful feedback that makes improvements to your essay. lot of homework and discussion but everything is meaningful. I think she is not a tough grader.
Professor Hearn is very dedicated to her work and is an amazing human being. Some of her lectures are heavy but it helps with your writing. She gives detailed feedback that helps your writing improve and during office hours you can get a lot of help.
just way too much with too tough grading but at least she's nice. but oh my goodness woman stop
