nothing in the lecture is on the tests, is very hard. powell was easier, at least he gave you a study guide for the test that MATCHED THE FRIGGIN' TEST!!!
Worst professor I have ever had. This was her first year teaching at UTSA...hopefully her last for the sake of future students.
not even worth going to class, better off trying to teach yourself out of the book!!!!
very hard teacher, difficult to understand, test are extremly hard. the only good thing is... if you meet with her for individual tutoring it really helps A LOT! if you make time she'll make time for you.
really nice lady, but her lectures are different from what she is gonna put on the exams. better read the book and learn the concept before u go to her class. exams are ok, just make sure u understand the book and u ll be fine. at least u would a B
Bad,bad class. The lectures are totally different from the tests. If you go see her it helps a little but tests are still different. Most of my class was pulling a C-F grade. Will never take her again!
Martinez is an ok teacher. She is a little hard to understand and her lectures are crazy. The tests are nothing like the homework. If you see her she does help a lot, but good luck making a good grade. She is very hard especially for chem I.
Nice lady I'm sure but the class is really difficult. The tests are ridiculously hard. I'm half way through my senior year and this was the first class I ever failed.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. Very hard to understand..she starts one topic and goes into another...starts one problem..then goes to another...then back to the problem..confusing..I dont recommend taking her at all!!!
i didnt think she was that bad, maybe she's learning from previous semesters. our first exam was fine... she told us what to expect. and she is always willing to help. she checks her mail a few times a day and always responds.
Nice lady, i liked her. Not hard at all if u tried. I got a high A and am not a good student. In fact i'm failing gen chem 2 at UT austin. She was funny though and made it somewhat interesting. TAKE HER!!!
I can't believe this teacher! She is by far the worst that ive had in my 3yrs in college!
Nice teacher. Willing to help if the need is there. Tells you what to expect on tests and quizzes. The only bad thing is her accent. It is a bit strong, and it makes it hard to understand the material if you don't know it already.
very hard. lectures are nothing like the tests she goes very fast in lecture and rarely slows down for very long
I like her, she is a very good teacher. Sometimes her tests are a bit different from what she goes over in class, but I think she just puts the questions into wording that is not what we expect. If you try, you will succeed in her class.
She is the first chemistry teacher that I have in my first year of college, and she makes me think that college professors are not that terrible. She gives out quizzes frequently, and that helps to pull up my grades.
take her,if you study the book, take notes and understand that --you will be fine--peopel who do not got ot class ,do not read book only fail this class--if you are good in math and have taked basic chem-it is fine.she gave bonus poitns upto 20 and curve the test, she is helpful, easy quizz.
She is very nice and tries to help her students to the best of her ability. If you dont study, you wont do well. Chem is a hard class and she is a difficult teacher but she does care about her students.
Did not like her class...Droped it, I could hardly understand what she said, class was very fast
Nice. People tell me her lectures are diffenent from in class, but i think they are fine. Ask questions in lecture or in person, its the best way to get through those strange exam questions.
She's nice, but it's hard to understand what she is saying!!! Lots of quizzes, both online and in class. Tests are hard!! BE AWARE!
What ever you do, do not take her class!!She breezes through lectures, quizzes are difficult (also timed!), and her exams are nothing like what she goes over in class. If I were you, take Powell(if you can) or even take Garcia. She's a nice lady but not a very good teacher.
If you do not like to study, or you want an easy A, don't enroll in her class. You learn a lot, but have to work a lot as well. One of the few professors that would give online "live" reviews at night so that everybody can attend. Is not the prof what makes you fail. It is not impossible to get an A
She's nice, but the class is ridiculously difficult. Her accent is too strong to understand her english. She needs to slow her lectures down her post the equations on the web so you don't spend the entire class writing instead of listening.Tests TOO long for time allotment!
Very nice teacher, she'll make time for you if you need help. Lectures are a killer though she zooms through the lecture slides and you hardly have time to write down examples. She's has a good personality but is a hard teacher. she says BASICALLY a thousand times an hour.
She is a very good professor in my opinion. I took her for basic chem this last fall and she was my best professor. Her class is not that difficult if you put in the effort and keep up with the class. Her best quality by far is that she will help her students any way she can. Take her.
she is an exelent teacher-she really look what you do in her exam and do you know your staffs or not--she is great --take her.
If you don't do the homework, you won't make it. She does everything she can to help the students - even having online reviews! It is a hard topic, but she gives it her all. If you try and don't plan on skating, you'll do fine.
good teacher tries to help her students in any way she can even if you dont come up to her and ask her.. print her lecture slides and come to class and youll pass.. do the homework and study and youll get an A tests are straight from slides and what she says... now taking general chem with her
Beware of some of these good comments. They may not be coming from the students. She is nice, she is helpful, but you should know that her tests are too long for the time limit as are her on-line quizzes. She lectures too fast to comprehend the material. She won't include the samples problems on slides.
I took her for basic...pretty tough. I took her for gen chem 1...got behind and had to drop. Her classes are extremely difficult if you get behind in the least. Doable if you work hard. She does blow through the material though. You pretty much teach yourself.
Finally! I am learning chemistry!
Professor Martinez-Rivera is one of the best intructors I've had in the two years at UTSA. She is friendly and displays a warm attitude towards her students. You have to keep up ,she definitely won't hold your hand, but she is always ready to help and very knowledgeable.
she's not a good professor
I think she is great! Brilliant, too. The class is very tough, but she does all she can to help with material. WebCT, lectures, notes, and e-mail. This class just takes a lot of work. Great Professor!
I thought her class was hard. She also gives little surprise quizzes and stuff so you have to go every time.
I can't believe how can anybody like her is still teaching!!!!
Worst teacher I have EVER had. Doesn't teach anything, just writes formulas on the board and then does one example she already worked out and writes the solution without explaining how she got it. The class isn't too hard but is harder than it needs to be because I have to teach myself everything. She won't even help with homerwork problems.
Terrible professor.Does not explain things well at all and gets mad if students don't understand something. Her standard reply is that "you must have been asleep", and then refuses to help. Doesn't care at all about the students. Makes you pay extra money for various things that shouldn't be necessary for the class. Just an all-around bad prof.
This professor has a way of taking a simple idea or topic and turning it into absolute confusion. I've literally had to teach myself everything in this class.
She's a great professor!
HER WEBCT STRINGS ARE RETARDED, not counting the fact that she is ALSO!!!! SHE CAN'T TEACH WORTH A D*MN!! SHE IS SLIGHTLY CONFUSED HERSELF. HER THOUGHTS TEND TO WANDER, SHE CAN'T KEEP ONE THOUGHT W/O RANDOMLY JUMPING TO ANOTHER TOPIC COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. HER EXPLANATIONS ARE VERY DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND AND SHE IS VERY HARD TO FOLLOW. BORING!!!!
I found this professor to be quite a challange, but she was ALWAYS available to offer additional support to her lectures. With her help twice a week I made a 100 on one of her exams. Work hard in her class and you will be rewarded!
Avoid taking chemistry with this professor if at all possible.
She has an odd but cute sense of humor. You can do well in this class, but her tests can be confusing. Overall I think she was a great chem teacher.
Always wanting to help her students anyway possible, but does move EXTREMELY fast through the material. Pay attention, and don't be afraid to approach her and ask for help.
She's okay. Her accent is a little hard to understand but overall her class wasn't that bad. She dops your lowest exam and there are a lot of quizzes and homework to help your grade out.
Good teacher, but she's hard to understand. Very heavy Italian accent. She also writes very small on the board so sit close. She's very nice and very helpful, but she moves fast so class can be difficult.
she goes thru material very fast. She is not consistant and thros curvebals on exams! never enough time on her test! She's defensive towards critizim. However, if u ask 4 help she will help you...put simply, i'd be careful in choosing her..
She moved fast for her lectures, and her tests are a bit confusing. Make sure to memorize and understand the problems she suggests you do for each chapter. If you memorize them, you'll do great on the tests. She also gives good curves, and will give extra credit often if people dont show up to class.
very helpful. accent isn't as bad as it's hyped up to be. does move somewhat quickly, but not too bad if you pay attention. important to go to class. tests are not too hard. she outlines pretty much every question/problem on her test.
Has an accent but you get used to it. She does her best to get everything taught in class, but if you go to her office hours you will do really well. She assigns problems from the book but you don't have to turn them in. I'd definetly recommend her if you are going to take Chem I
goes really fast in lectures but is very helpful in office hours.she is great professor, is fair, and treats all students like science majors.i learned alot and feel that her class has prepared me for the general chemistry sequence.dr.martinez has a passion for chemistry and teaching and it definitely shows.must study to do well in this class.
You will definitely learn in this class. It helps going to class, because she'll spring extra points here and there, plus, she takes your attendance into account when it comes to your final grade. She's really good at what she does, and very helpful. I wish she taught Chem I too. And i don't recall too many curveballs on her tests...
she is a nice teacher and will tell you what types of questions that she will let you do on the exam. If you ask her questions, she is very pleased to help you. Good luck!
Her teaching method is really easy to understand as long as you attend class and take every little bit of notes she puts up.If you have questions she'll be glad to help you.Occasionally will add E.C. pts to tests.Real nice, funny teacher.
Attendance isn't required but helps curve your grade at the end. Homework is given and IT HELPS SO DO IT. go to class, you get used to her accent. She is the best basic chem. teacher. Extra credit is given to help you alot. I recommend her for anyone who isn't interested in chem. b/c she explains it well and her tests aren't to bad either
She's the best chem teacher.. extremely nice and helpful! Definitely take her class; you learn a lot! Tests aren't bad if you study and they're usually curved. GREAT CLASS.
Nice, but HARD! I would not take her again. Her tests are very tricky. No matter how hard you study, you will not pass her tests. The hw is not too bad, but it isn't worth much. Her accent is also very hard to understand. There is no SI eventhough there needs to be. I don't know who to suggest because the other chem teachers are even worse.
I would recommend this professor. Really nice lady and is more than willing to help if you just ask. It isnt hard to get an A in this class. Just do the work. Whoever said it was impossible to pass her tests shouldnt be in college.
Teaches pretty clearly. Gives question by question outline of what test will be like. Makes chemistry easy to understand.
She has a strong accent but you'll get used to it. Although attendance isn't required, she curves your final grade in the end just for coming to class (she uses the clicker) I recommend her.
good teacher.. goes a lil fast. but she posts her notes on webct. but her tests are no joke. better study and know it well! she does tell you what to study for the exams. no curves. so far the class aves on the tests in my class.... 50's and 60's.
If you want to teach yourself chemistry this class is for you. Very rude/harsh person. Takes info from the book and makes it more difficult so your better off not listening or taking notes. Entirely self teaching. The normal grade for her classes says it all 50-60. People don't pass. Had to have rated herself for a decent score. Bad English skill.
Fast paced, lots of math, GREAT teacher! I am taking her again. You will actually learn in this class, if you don't, you will fail. IS NOT AN EASY A, but well worth the effort.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS! I am not COMPLAINING neither, but she goes wayy too fast and cant understand her! If you go for help she'll go fast too! Didnt understand nothing in her class, did hmwk in her and attended every class still didnt help me! DO NOT RECOMMEND! WORST PROF EVER!!
Bad teacher! I could not interpret half of the stuff she was saying. I love chemistry, but she taught it in a bad manner. Her tests are way different from what she teaches in her class. She does not curve or offer extra credit.
Great prof. She's fast & doesn't always have time to splain in detail. Go to her office-she is extremely helpful. If you're whining, it's prob because you didn't attend. She admits she's tough but she's more than fair. Homework is helpful. Suggested probs before exams. Tests questions are a little tricky...she actually expects you to think!
If you want to pass with a high grade, read the chapter before you go to class because she gives quizzes for extra credit. You'll need a clicker for her basic class. Do as many practice questions possible. Face it, Chem is a science and science needs study. Martinez is tough. This was my first chem class ever (I didn't even take it in highschool)
she was a very hard proff talks tooo fast cant keep up...very thick accent... doesnt teach well and tests have absolutly nothing to do with lecture overall i learned there is very little effort or way to make a decent grade
Her class is abo****ely NOT easy. You have to work your butt off to be able to pass, i passed with a C- but that was barely. She explains rather fast, but its not like it isnt understandable, even with the accent. When you go to her office shes more than happy to help you out, but you HAVE to study and you HAVE to go to class to be able to pass.
Her teaching skills are for students who plan to become a chemists. If you are just taking chemistry as a core course, I would take someone else. Her accent makes it hard to understand and she goes very fast on her notes, if you miss a class or just fall behind, forget about cstching up. Her tests have nothing to do with her lectures. BAD TEACHER!!
Contrary to most posts, I really enjoyed her class. She's not mean, but she means business if you get my point. She remembers students very well. Attend class if you expect to pass.
Professor Martinez is an excellent teacher. She's very helpful and makes herself readily available to her students. She doesn't overload you with homework, and if YOU don't procrastinate you'll make a good grade in her class. Bottom line...don't take this class if you want an easy "A".
I will never make the mistake of taking her class again. Good person, but HORRIBLE TEACHER!!!!
Don't be fooled by the positive reviews. That was Lydia Martinez Rivera herself.
Her lectures are very good and helpful because she uses the same examples on tests. Her tests are very hard. She is helpful outside of class. She has respect for those that attend her lectures.
Good teacher but hard class. Its not hard to get a good grade as long as you put forth the effort. Don't skip class and attend SI sessions.
this professor is not extremely hard, it's chemistry so you have to put in the effort yourself. she does expect you to know basic mathmatical skills. studying at least 2 to 3 hours a day is a must if u want a good grade. if ur looking for a handout this is not the class for u, but if u want to learn then highly recommended. she is a good prof.
Chemistry isn't an easy subject to learn so you shouldn't expect an easy A from any of the chem professors. You'll earn the A if you work for it. Professor Martinez-Rivera was awesome!! Everyone complaining here are just blaming the professor for their low score when they should be blaming themselves for their lack of effort.
idk what they are talking about, im an average joe and that class is HARD. she goes way to fast!!!! only if your good at chem take her...
Not a good class if you're not too interested in chemistry. She expects you to know basic chemistry front and back, and class is too big for her to clear any specific doubt you have. Talks too fast. Attendance is not required but if you miss one class, consider yourself behind for the whole semester.
She's a good teacher and if you pay really close attention to her you will get what she's talking about. She lets you ask questions and answers them to the knowledge where you understand. She talks fast and faster if she's had coffee. Excelent teacher and recomend her if you want to learn Chemestry.
This course was very hard?Dr. M is very nice in office hours, but tests are killer. I do the homework and the suggested problems. The tests are VERY hard and require a lot of memorization. I have heard they are department based test?not sure if this is true or not, but you better be ready to step up a notch when you take this course.
This class is really hard. She makes the tests way harder then what she actually teaches. Its ridiculous and frustrating.
Professor Martinez is very knowledgable however, her tests don't match the format in which she teaches or the homework which is posted online. They are far too difficult for a general Chemistry course. Even with SI sessions, study groups, and study time, my grades were still poor and I have/had a 4.0. Online book is useless as well.
This is a very difficult course. I did the online homeworks, suggested problems, AND went to the SI sessions but I still struggled a bit. Her tests are nothing like the online homeworks. There is a lot of memorization.
Very dedicated professor; willing to give 110% to her students. However, even with doing absolutely everything other than study for hours a day- I still found this course difficult. I recommend her if you're willing to put the time in and you MUST visit her during office hours- it is Chemistry after all.
Great professor - kept class fun and interesting, homework was relevant, tests were fair. She was very sweet and helpful when I went to her office hours. Make sure you understand dimensional analysis (it's easier than it sounds), because if you can do that, you can do 90% of the stuff you'll be tested over.
Wow. This class is definitely not for people who don't know Chemistry. Don't try to test out of Basic Chem, she's constantly referencing Basic Chem, and if you're relying on high school Chem - you'll be behind right at the beginning. She's very intelligent and she knows her stuff though. The class just requires a LOT of extra time put into it.
I took both Basic Chem and General Chem 1 with her. The class itelf is really hard but you really do learn a lot with Martinez-Rivera. She is very helpful in her office hours and is a really nice lady. I got an A in both her classes but I had to work really hard for those A's. Take both Basic and General Chem with her and it'll be a little easier.
I was an A student before her class, which I got a D in even after going to SI sessions and doing all the homework. She only seemed to care about the students who took her Basic Chem class. Take another professor if Chemistry isn't your major.
horrible teacher who is fake... and makes her tests impossible... 2 points away from a C n gae me a D... learned alot n now im taking it againwith another teacher... barely studied n got a 101!
Great teacher! She was very helpful, and I learned a ton in her class. The class was not the easiest, that's for sure, but as long as you study the textbook well and listen to lectures, you'll do fine. I learned a ton in her class and was very glad I took her for Intro Chem! She's also very helpful in office hours if you ever need to go.
She isn't a horrible professor, she's just really really hard. Her notes are ok and her homework and quizzes are super easy, but the tests are insanely difficult. You have to know the material 100% to apply it to her tricky questions or you wont pass. Take her if you have oodles of time to study and are really good at chem already.
If you think at least 11 pages of notes every single day is good very wrong especially if you do not understand or miss one class good luck passing she does not explain the material at all.
She is not easy to understand at all. When students go into her office with a question, she will say it's in the notes. I am not going over this again. Unless you already know everything about chemistry then you will pass. Otherwise take someone else.
Martinez Rivera is awesome, definitely the best prof I have had at UTSA. If you find her too difficult, maybe science isn't for you. All I do is go to class, take notes, review these notes for a couple hours before a test, and I have a high A. I do not read the book and am not exceptionally smart. Tests just like notes, what more can you ask for?
She's a very nice lady and a great teacher. It's possible to pass the class not reading the textbook but attending class everyday. It's impossible to pass the class if you don't do either one regularly. To make an A, must do both. And be incredible with Chem.
She is my favorite professor ever. She's the sweetest lady. I made a C on my first exam due to my lack of studying, but put in some time for the other exams and made an A in the course. It wasn't a difficult class, but you do need to study somewhat. I loved going to her office hours; she makes everything VERY clear. I highly recommend her!!
SHE'S AWESOME!She clearly teaches the material in class and if you don't understand it she will help you during office hours until you completely understand. She is approachable and she really does care about her students. SHe writes the notes while you do so she doesn't move very quickly. I highly recommend her whether you're good at chem or not!
Even with all these negative reviews, she still won't change. She assumes everyone knows the material as she well as she does so te problems require almost 100% knowledge of the topic, as in with doctoral training. She doesn't even teach that stuff in lecture
She grades her tests incredibly hard. I understand the material, but she works against the students with her grading policies. Even if the whole class fails she will not curve the test. This is the only class I have ever tried so hard in but could not succeed.
RUN!DO NOT TAKE! Not only is she a garbage teacher but she had the audacity to announce to our class that she was going to make us appreciate our resources. WOW I pay 4500$ a sem and I should be appreciative..this REALLY pissed me off. In a way I am a customer of UTSA and for her to say i should app. what I pay for.. where the heck does she get off
I REALLY would not recommend this professor to anyone good or bad at chemistry. Her lectures are a whole different world fromt he exams; her examples in no way reflect whats questions are on the test. Basically, you'll walk into a test thinking you aced it, but then it will come back as a 70 or something. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
very good teacher. cares more than most, if you only put in the effort. very hard, but fair.
For all the people who DO NOT LIKE CHEMISTRY, I strongly advise you not to take this woman's class. I placed into Gen Chem and regretted it immediately. She is one of the hardest professors at UTSA. Don't be fooled by the positive ratings
there aren't enough characters here that would fully allow me to express how terrible this teacher is. All the positive comments are lies. I studied nearly everyday for this class and read b4 we covered it in class. i was doing so poorly in class that i had to drop. UTSA worst teacher ever, hands down. If you find yourself in her class, run away.
Do u see the rating beneath mine? they speak the truth. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. b/c of her i changed my major from chemistry. whether its ignorance or courage that compels you to take her class despite my warning is beyond me. u do so at your own risk
SMH at this teacher. Dont take even if your life depends on it
Don't even think about it.
DROP! Do not be an idiot and sign up for this class anyways. She is terrible all around.
I love Ms. Martinez! I used to hate chemistry but Ms. Martinez is really good about explaining topics to where you understand it. If you don't understand parts of the lecture she does not hesitate to help you during office hours. She's a really good teacher but her tests are tough. She can come off as harsh but she does care about her students!
Martinez-Rivera is funny & an awesome professor, but beware she is TOUGH. She does NOT spoon feed her students by any means. You have to put in the work if you want a good grade.I took her for Chem 1 & 2 & I got a great foundation in chem b/c of her. She'll curve if the rest of the department curves. She is also very helpful if you go to office hrs.
She is pretty hard, but, it probably would have been easier if I went to class more often. She is very nice, and helpful when you go to her one on one. I had her for chem 1 and 2. All in all, if you take her class seriously you will be fine.

HORRIBLE! She is mean, rude to her students, hard to understand, and she glazes over everything. I ended up reporting her to the Chem Dept. because she failed to teach us an entire chapter for the common final. I am a chemistry major, and I had a horrible foundation for Chem II.
HORRIBLE! Shes really annoying she goes so fast, does all of her examples at one time after explaining everything fast, and at the beginning of the semester she tells you a couple of hours she can meet with you(when she has 200+ students) and the rest of her time is for her daughter maybe she shouldnt be a college teacher if she has no time to help
The student below has probably never asked her for an appointment outside office hours, nor looked to see that most professors have the same amount of office hours. The truth is, she will not do what you are supposed to do yourself. One on one, you DO get lots of help from her.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. you cannot understand anything she is saying and when you go to her office hours she is no help what so ever. I went there and all she did was give me back the last test I made a 43 on. Her owl homework is easy but the tests are killer. SI sessions do not help at all and never finished the tests in time. DROPPED IT
The truth about this class is that it IS hard. You must be willing to put in the time. Dr.M is AMAZING at explaining Chem, but you must read the book AND do YOUR part. If you want to learn chem and are not afraid to be challenged, you will not regret taking her class. This is by no means a blowoff. If you are not serious, take Powell instead.
Yes, she is challenging! No, she is not horrible. Very helpful and nice if you approach her. I feel like you could get a 'rude' vibe if you're not very serious about her class, fail her tests and DON'T approach her for help. She is very fair, and is a GREAT teacher. Her lectures are fast paced, but she gives you the essentials.
Most brutally difficult tests I have ever taken in my life. I would study 4 days prior to tests and still pull low B's high C's. It was ridiculous. Every question was a trick question. May randomly add or delete points off your test as she realizes she made errors. May help you during office hour, may not depends on her mood. Rarely uses the book.
Great prof! The truth is this class is hard and difficult and will make you cry. However, hard wok pays off! She is kind and approachable and deeply and sincerely cares for her students. If you want an easy class- don't take this. Is you want to learn and be prepared for gen Chem II- take Dr. M
She is the best chemistry teacher so far. but her tests are HARD also her homework. You get 4 tests in her class. First two exams are okay. Last two are HARD. Try hard to get an A
This is a hard class. her tests are very difficult and tricky. she is very helpful if you have any questions. If you do the practice problems she assigns it will help a lot. her lectures are easy to follow and she posts them online. overall she is a hard professor but probably the best one for gen chem
Dr. Martinez is the best professor I've ever had in my life! This class was also very difficult for me, but it was so worth it. All you have to do is completely understand the lectures & homework she assigns, and the tests will be easy. She really cares about her students, and if you need help, she will give it to you. Be ready to learn!!!

Great professor, difficult course, but if you attend class, participate, and do the homework the tests shouldn't be difficult at all. Definitely learned more from this professor than anyone else, she actually cares about her students and will take every minute she has to help students.
very bad teacher does not curve grades hard tests and quizs not helpful at all
All those that are saying she's an awful teacher did not care enough about their grade to put in effort, or are just not cut out for sciences. I've always had trouble with Chemistry, but she made it crystal clear. Relevant examples, very very clear lectures. Attend every class, take notes, and do homework and you'll be golden.
AWESOME PROF! Sure the class is challenging, but she does an awesome job at teaching. No other prof I have does this. She ACTUALLY cares about your grade, as long as you care about it as well. As long as you do the homework, and speak up if you're lost, you're for sure to get a good grade!
Tough teacher, but if you pay attention and study you can get a good grade. She will make you earn your grade though. She uses I-Clickers in class for participation grades.
Class can be challenging and handwriting/accent can be hard to catch. However you -will- learn chemistry. She will make you work hard in order to earn the grade you want. Keep up with the mastering chemistry homework, they can really be your lifeline
She is a horrible teacher. The class is beyond hard. Her accent/handwriting is horrible as well. The SI sessions won't really help you. She is available to help you during office hours. She tries to be funny, but her jokes are wack. Class is mandatory so you need to go. DO NOT TAKE HER you'll be miserable and stressed.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, i'm warning you. she could seriously take 1st prize for WORST TEACHER IN THE WORLD! The only way you can expect to pass this class is if you are ALREADY have a degree in chemistry. Don't waste a drop on her, i did =(
She is a excellent teacher, yes she is a hard teacher, makes you work for your grade, but I have learned soo much in this class and never understood Chem before. Study and read your book. People who say she is a "horrible" teacher are wrong. She is Helpful, friendly, and is never rude to her students.
This professor is extremely nice and she cares for her students, however she moves way too fast. while I'm still writing the problem out she is already writing the answer and if she worked a similar problem out once then she will not work out another and will just give you the answer. Not much help and homework is horrible. will not give the answer
She is a GREAT teacher. She gives out 4 test and drops the lowest test grade. All you have to do is take notes and study those notes. You don't even have to read the book. YOU MUST TAKE HER not only is she a great teacher but you will learn so much in that class. IF YOU PAY ATTENTION ITS AN EASY A. Trust me
She has been one of my favorite teachers that I have ever had. She lectures in a way that is very comprehendible for even non-science majors. You must go to class, because she uses iClicker, but don't stress about it, because she gives extra credit for those who do not miss more than 3 days. Study your notes, because it is similar to the test.
I won't lie this isn't an easy teacher; you really have to work for your grade. However, she goes into depth and gives clear examples on a variety of problems. She also puts all of her notes online. If you take the time to study and do the recommended problems from the book, you can do well in the class.
This professor is NOT your ticket to an easy A. However, if you are willing to try, go to class everyday, and SERIOUSLY learn chemistry she IS the right teacher for you. She rarely uses the book except around test time when she gives suggest problems for you to practice for the test. I do recommend her!
horrible! i didn't learn a single thing from her. she gives a quiz every single class day, so you definitely an iclicker. i learned from the book, and she gives 4 tests, and drops the lowest grade. each worth 20%. the final is the hardest and is worth 30%. quizzes/iclicker are only worth 10%.
Great professor! Yes it's a hard class at first, but going to class everyday and doing the assigned problems are key! There are 4 partial tests and she drops the lowest one! She curved every test, even if someone got a perfect score on it. Very helpful and nice if you're willing to put forth the effort!!! Would take for chem 2 if she was teaching!
Gen chem 1 is a difficult course, but she does her best to make this class as easy as possible. Make sure you do your textbook problems. If you can master uur textbook problems then you will do well in the class. I studied my butt off in this class therefore ended up making an A in the class.
EXCELLENT teacher. I was initially terrified about the prospect of taking Gen Chem I due to hearsay, but Dr. Martinez is very passionate about chemistry, which helps especially at 8:00 in the morning. Expect to work hard, but you'll be fine, it's not impossible; she prepares you very well for her tests and I finished with an A. Thanks Dr. Martinez!
Dr. Martinez is the BEST professor I've had at UTSA. She's not your ticket to an easy A but the way she teaches is excellent. She provides clear notes & lots of examples, drops the lowest test grade & curves tests. Study, do practice problems, GO TO CLASS & you'll pass! I recommend her. I'm taking her again for Gen Chem I & II.
she is a good teacher. as long as you go to class and take notes. you'll be good.
I don't understand why there is praise for this professor. She smiles, jokes, and acts friendly, and yet her exams never go over anything she teaches, the homework is nothing more than a stall for studying actual material, her office hours are short and at unbelievably random times, and she'll wait until two hours before an exam to put up notes.
Mrs. Martinez is very difficult, and didn't realize it was intended for science majors, until a couple classes later and realized that even after going to the SI sessions and going to tutoring I still didn't understand the material. She expects you to understand something after going over it once. Tests are nothing like the hw and notes.
Absolutely disappointed with the teacher in every way. She zips through the notes with barely any time to comprehend what she says and the tests are HORRIBLE, they have nothing to do with the notes or homework. I warn everyone not to take her and based off the reviews I wonder how she is still teaching.
Prof. Martinez is really fantastic. I hated chemistry, but her and the SI really made the impossible possible. SI Nirvana is amazing. I'm kind of in love with her :P But anyways, I'd recommend taking Dr. Martinez to anyone for sure! If you do your part, show up to class EVERYDAY and attend SI, you'll be [Au]-en. Haha lame joke, I know. GO CHEMISTRY
Professor was good teacher, study notes and the tests are over the notes, not that hard of a teacher, just takes some studying.
She seems like a very intelligent woman and she comes across pretty friendly I guess, but she does not teach well. Her methods are just rushed and I felt I was left to just teach myself at home through reading the book and that's it.
She seems nice, but she writes notes/lectures at the same time which makes it hard to comprehend if chemistry is a harder class for you. She is not very flexible if you need any kind of schedule exception and she doesn't take the time to understand your circumstance. She seems to love what she does, but I found her class too intolerable.
Incredibly intelligent and funny. She provides plenty of examples in notes. The key to doing well is taking notes and doing all of the homework, even the extra assignments from the book. If you don't understand a problem, ALWAYS ask her because it's the slightly tricky ones that make it onto the otherwise easy tests.
Easiness of 3 because while the class is not easy, she makes it easy to learn and understand. Absolutely amazing lady. Very intelligent. SI Nirvana has proven to be extremely helpful as well, and going has made a huge difference in my grade. I would recommend this class to anyone whether or not they need chemistry. Overall, really great experience.
Is not helpful at all. Is incomprehensible when lecturing, all she does is write down things from her computer onto the overhead. Loud and mean. Don't expect a good grade from this professor.
What you put in is what you get out. She's a great teacher but you have to put forth the effort. Our SI Michelle was incredible and attending them made a tremendous difference to my grade.
Chemistry alone is a difficult subject; however, Martinez provides numerous examples and takes you through everything at a reasonable pace. This is college so there will be some self learning and studying on your own time but if you put in the effort and attend the SI's you will do fine
Her tests are hard but strait off the notes. I despise the material but got a B in the class with minimal effort. Just went to class every day and took good notes.
So hard her lectures were awful and exams even worse I definitely do not recommend her
She was an alright teacher, consistently gave notes. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you miss alot if you don't go. Tests were straight off the notes, and she drops your lowest test grade and gave extra credit. She's an easy B grade, or an A if you try hard enough.
I'm going to make this as straight to the point as possible. Don't take her. She has an accent. She words problems on the test TO CONFUSE YOU. Then when you ask her about it she gets defensive. She talks fast so sometimes it's hard to keep up while taking notes. I wouldn't recommend her at all. So again, don't take her.
Do not take her!Of all the Professors I had in UTSA-she is the worst:she doesn't care if you understand the material nor she is willing to help you to understand it.Also she is lecturing too fast for non-major chemistry students (she has never asked if we understood what she is talking about). I am very disappointed. She is not here for a student
She does move fast but if you pay attention and study the notes it isn't hard. She drops your lowest test grade and SI nirvana is a huge help if you get lost.
Dr. Martinez was an amazing chemistry professor. She goes pretty fast, but if you keep up, the class isn't bad. Her tests are like the examples she does during class, so pay attention. She is very helpful during office hours and she genuinely cares about her students. I would definitely recommend her, and take another class with her!
Do not take this teacher, she speaks way to fast and her accent is super heavy so you never know what she says. Plus her notes are messy and scribbled while she talks. Her notes are worthless and have nothing to do with the test. You are better off studying from a book.
Dr. Martinez is fan-freakin-tastic! This course seems so necessary for general chemistry 1 from what I've heard, and she is the lady to take! Her notes are SO on point with the exams, they are pretty much exactly the same. Attendance is super critical to making an A. Her SI Nirvana is absolutely amazing as well! I would NOT recommend anyone else.
Disliked her styles of teaching. I wish I could have taken someone else. Don't take her ! She expects you to grasps concepts fast & moves at a fast pace. She claims that it wil help for the next chem class.
Would not recommend taking her class. Too picky. Does not know how to give directions. Overall worst class I've taken so far. Tests are way harder than anything she lectures. Attendance is mandatory or you will be behind. Also there is an accent so at times it is hard to understand what she is saying.
Do not take her, especially if chem is not your major or if you have trouble in there. Her tests are extremely hard compared to her examples and HW. For ex: I have all A's on HW and iclicker q's, but can not get above a 47 on the exams. She is loud and rude if she thinks your question is "dumb". Q's on exams are designed to trick you. Beware.
She is an excellent prep for chemistry majors. She teaches the material and expects you to think critically. She goes fast, and comes across as rude, but she is very friendly and helpful if you talk to her one-to-one. Non-majors should avoid her.
No. Don't do it. May be useful for your everyday chemistry-lover. Otherwise, no.
Attendance is mandatory for this class to understand the material and for random iClicker points. She is a good teacher during lectures, but her tests are hard! She words things differently to trick you. Not an easy grade but you do have to work for a good one.
This is the BEST chemistry teacher I have ever had! The professor is excellent at explaining every step thoroughly, and does lots of practice problems. I got an A on the first test, a C on the second. I've been through AP Chem 2 in HS, so tests certainly aren't easy, but all the material is taught fantastically!
This is one of my hardest classes, do not take it. Her test are beyond tricky, multiple choice and includes answer choice E. answer is not listed. If you take this class go to SI!
LOVED this class, yes it's hard, I'm an honor student and will barely get out with a B, but well worth it!! I learned soooo much, I would recomended her to anyone!
Great teacher! She posts all her notes that she writes down on blackboard. I mainly went to class to just listen, do examples, and get iclicker points. There is no need to write down every single thing she writes because you can look back at her notes online. Study groups and SI sessions help in this course! You really DO learn in this class.
Learned a lot, but I really dislike her style of teaching. Notes are sloppy and unorganized. Tests are worded to trick you. She tells you to study the homework for test prep yet the tests are NOTHING like the homework. I learned a lot because I put a ridiculous amount of effort into this class. Many off my friends dropped it.
She has been one of the best and most influential professors I've ever had!If you work hard you can make an A. It is collage after all! Exams are from notes&hw. It was the hardest course I've ever taken but definitely my favorite. Dr. M knows her stuff, cares and always willing to help, just ASK! Would love to take it again in a heartbeat.
Dr. M-Rivera is awesome. She is very enthusiastic, and not gonna lie, she goes fast! I am fortunate enough to be able to attend SI for this class. Nirvana rocks. She's real purty and super smart and makes this chem stuff much easier than when I see it for the first time in class. I would recommend taking this professor any day. Love her and her SI!
Dr M. Is my favorite chemistry professor at UTSA! I took her for chem 1 & 2 and did well, she post notes online which is very helpful and test questions are from her notes. Take her! If you don't go to class then dont take her end of story.
Nice lady, goes a bit fast though. she knows her stuff. be ready for the homework. took hours to do and the tests are tricky. she really enjoys teaching and know her stuff. i would definitely recommend her.
Took this professor basic chem and gen chem 1. She always knows what shes doing and explains notes thoroughly however she moves super fast. Her exams are tricky, she wants to make sure you're actually thinking. Personally, she's pretty intimidating and makes you feel like you're wasting her time. However, her lectures are very straight forward.
Managed a B in her class probably bc you only need a 75. Kind of difficult class (chemistry is not my strongest subject). She is a decent professor though, averaged a 75 on all my tests. However I probably would not take her again. There have got to be better professors out there. Overall an average class.
One of the best classes I have taken at UTSA. She actually teaches instead of reading from power points. We did lots of practice problems in class which was really helpful. I would definitely recommend taking her.
hard! She cares about her students learning so she does a ton of examples in class, which made the students taking the lab always behind and clueless :/ she does post thorough notes online making class not mandatory. A very smart lady making her test that much harder she expects you to know chem front and back. If you are ready to work take her.
I had her for Gen Chem I and I loved it! Sure it was hard, but I actually learned something in that class. If you go to SI and office hours, it's extremely helpful. She's pretty funny and is willing to help you understand anything you didn't get in class. Definitely take her class!
Dr. M is passionate and knowledgeable. Class is mandatory as test questions are based on lecture examples. You can access notes on BBLearn, but still go to class. Seeing her during office hours is difficult since she has so many students. Fair grader, fair tests, prepares you well for ACS final. I'd recommend her to serious science students.
She is such a sweet lady and a very good teacher. Her tests are easy as long as you study the material she taught in class. She puts all of the notes online so you don't have to go to class, but it does help to be there when she explains it.
ONE OF THE BEST PROFESSORS AT UTSA!!! STRONGLY RECOMMEND HER!!! Took Basic Chem and Gen Chem 1 with her... Definitely love her class!!!
Okay this required class SUCKS. The curriculum is awful and the assignments are STUPID. But Dr. Martinez-Rivera tries to make the best of it. I just despised this class and her enthusiasm for it got annoying. The tests aren't hard, they're just plain stupid. Complete bull2628 and just out to get you. Took nothing but annoyance away from this class.
AIS is a new class this semester (Fall 2014), and let me tell you, I should not be putting this much work into a class that's basically Intro to College. She's a strong believer in group projects, so you best believe that your partners are decent. Nitpicky with grammar and punctuation for mini papers, mandatory attendance (she keeps tabs on you).
It's an annoying class and she assigns lots of projects, but they aren't too difficult. Most of the people that complain are generally just super lazy. she tries hard and wants her students to succeed
Never stops talking, but you won't get anything out of hearing her talk. Lots of group projects. Not very clear on anything. She tries to help and she is a good person, but she isn't a good teacher.
I like professor Martinez-Rivera but it's just the AIS curriculum is a little rigid while talking to other AIS students and especially when you have work hard all semester and gives you a B. This lady told me she was going to give me an A if I kept working hard and improving myself. I did all of that and even I went to the writing center .
AIS isn't her real dynamic but I would definitely recommend her for Chemistry. She has a passion for it and her students, but AIS she turns into something harder than it really should be. As for the actual class I really don't understand why the majors having nothing to do with science should take it.
She will literally talk for the whole class using one breath. She's passionate about whatever she teaches, but she is a pretty serious and strict person.
Professor Martinez is AMAZING! She is respected by her students and makes a required and tedious class fun and engaging. Attendance is crucial to your grade so if you if have the tendency to skip, you're in trouble. We had maybe 5 assignments due the entire semester and she doesn't give us the usual "busy work" which I greatly appreciated.
Always willing to help you. Super nice, super understanding and super cool. She has a heart which is nice. No one likes the class but we all love her. She is one of those professors you just go "wow she really has a grasp on everything she teaches". Just don't be mean to her and you'll do fine.
This teacher made my semester a living hell. She refused to help students, gave pure utter disrespect when asked for help. She treats students who need help as lazy bums, She also takes off points for the smallest and stupidest things. She even referred me to the judiciary committee for plagiarizing the dictionary! DO NOT TAKE HER. REPORT HER.
Longest class for a simple subject. She's so sassy it's annoying. Grades harsh while not being clear on what she wants. to reiterate others below. DO NOT TAKE HER.
She honestly made me considering dropping out of college, and it's my first semester here.
Do NOT take this class! Dr. Martinez is very particular in grading and does not give a clear explanation of her standards. She is an extremely tough grader and takes AIS way too seriously. At times she can be nice, however she is extremely rude! This class is supposed to help students transition into college, however, she was very discouraging.
She has no structure at what she's teaching. I have literally learned nothing from this class at all except for she is rude and in fact does treat students who need or ask for help with disrespect and is almost degrading. None of the assignments make sense, and she had the worst instructions for her assignments. I suggest not taking her.
Lectures are boring and half the time you don't know what is going on. Would not take again.
Just no. I dreaded coming to class, but was forced to come because attendance is a grade. You sit through a lecture, that by the time you walk out, realized you didn't understand anything. She is too picky on what she wants. Her high expectations lead to a worse grade for you. For what is suppose to be an easy class, she makes unbearable.
The truth. Dr. M is tough. If you don't take advantage of the opportunities she gives by reading your drafts before you turn things for grade (and leave class instead) or the second-chance on the oral presentations you will cry the whole semester. I got my drafts in and presented a second time, I am good. Pay attention and do as she says.
She is not clear in instructions. She is very rude to her students and condescending. When you go to her for help, she doesn't say much to help you.
After an entire semester, I honestly do not know what I have learned or was supposed to learn in this class. I gained absolutely nothing but a low grade for this class. She's never clear on anything and is her attitude makes you want to strangle her. Why is she a teacher?
She overall was an OK professor. Takes attendance. Though she had a lot of spunk, the lectures were really boring. For an AIS class, there was A LOT of work. I managed an A but it was none too easy.
Dr. M. is kind of silly. But, in a good way. I took the class aimed at natural science majors so we did a lot of learning how to gather information. If she assigned a paper she was willing to give you feedback 2 to 3 times before you turned it in for credit. There are a few group projects but as long as you do your share you will get a good grade!
She is really a TOUGH GRADER!!! DON'T take her. she is too picky. I spent a lot of time in this class, but till get a low grade. Also, she is rude to students, why she is a teacher!!!
I love Dr. M! She gives really in-depth lectures/notes that help for the assignments she provided. She has a good sense of humor, and she is really caring. This class is easy to pass! Just put in the effort. Easy A.
Dr. M is condescending and unfriendly. She may claim otherwise, but she's lying. Her accent is so thick that it's hard to understand her, plus she doesn't use powerpoints because she thinks they mark a professor as "bad." The class is an easy A, but taking her will leave you frustrated that UTSA allows professors like this to teach.
I have never disliked a class so much. Just thinking about this class gets me stressed. Dr. M is not friendly and I have always had a hard time trying to communicate with her. There has been a lot of favoritism in my class and I have not learned anything from this class.
Mainly group projects. Before any project or essay needs to be submitted, she does offer a chance for feedback. She does offer a few chances for extra credit.
