I seriously recommend this teacher for chemistry. She is clear and is always there when you need her for extra help. Chemistry is a hard class in the first place and you do need an excellent teacher, so I highly recommend her!
A tough chemistry class, and the tests were hard too. Her notes help, and she makes herself available with ample office hours. She even helped with CHE152 stuff the next semester when I wasn't in her 152 class. Good sense of humor and an AMAZING memory.
Worst teacher I have ever seen. Her tests are outrageous and come from chapters and portions that she has never even taught.
Very well organized and very knowledgeable. All her notes are very helpful. All her tests reflect the material assigned, and covered in class and/or in the labs.
Shs is very tough when it comes to testing. Is happy if her students are in the 60s range.Although she is helpful, and I know we have to learn the material, her tests are just too tough and almost tricky in some of the wording
Lydia is a very good teacher. One whom I would recommend to any student. It is easy to see that she really cares about her students.
this class rules... but shes a red sox fan.. c'mon that isnt cool GO YANKEES!!!!!!
Awesome teacher, extremely helpful. Material can sometimes be complicated but she is very good at explaining it.
i had to take chem 3 times, i had her my 3rd time and got a b+. every other time i ended up dropping cuz the profs acted like i had a doctorate in chemistry. she was EXTREMELY helpful and i HIGHLY recommend anyone haveing to take chem to have her. if you actually go to class she will bend over backwards for you, and help you out 100%
This professor was by far one of the best professors ive ever had. She thuroughly goes through material and explains exactly what will be on the test. She comes highly recommended. Trust me, i went into three of her tests with a massive hangover and still pulled off mid 90's. Study and you'll do fine.
It was a hard course, but Lydia was very helpful, she always made time for students. You can do well but, you need to put in the time.
Was a very difficult course but Lydia was extremely helpful to anyone who needed it and was always willing to share her time. She is very pleasant as well!
Professor Tien was very helpful, and the course was never boring. She made the material relatively easy to comprehend, and the tests were neither too easy nor too difficult. Very enjoyable class.
Her favorite phrase: "Talk to your neighbor" If you lucky enough not to have a smart one next to you - you fail or do pour. Average in the glass is about 65%. Talks 1000 words a sec. Only touches bases, but exams stretches beyoung class staff. Good luck.
She teaches great, very easy to understand. Very helpfull when ever you need it! Grab her for a teacher and you'll get an A!!
if her job is to wead them out, she's the best. if her goal is to teach, the worst. talks and wharp speed and by the old book. dept is ego driven. no tutors available, she's got ya by the you know what and takes advantage of it.
she has such a high level of understanding of chemistry that she was actually not the right teacher for me as she was very fast paced. If you were not strong in high school chem. then I would not recommend taking it with her. As far as the tests go you almost always have to rely on taking knowledge and applying it to a problem you have not seen.
Lydia is a great professor. She knows her stuff, and tries to help whenever she can. Her tests are pretty difficult, though, but if you study you should do ok. She explains things very well and will try to explain things when asked. She has a good sense of humor, too.
If it is an normal when you study hard, do all the assigned homework and more, do great in labs and quizes and generally have a great understanding of chemistry, but get 60 on the exam, because Lydia is boosting her ego by putting ridiculously long, hard and tricky problems that are impossible to complete in 50 minutes, than yes,she is great teacher
Lydia is the toughest professor I have ever seen. She grades very hard and does not prepare you for the final. Avoid her at all cost.
Lydia is great at what she does, and has been by far the best chemistry teacher I've ever encountered. The tests can be tricky, but there's so many other ways to get points that it is possible to pull an A. Would highly recommend.
The students asked if the next exam will be fair. She said her husband thought it was. What is that? She said it also depended on her mood after the super bowl. She re-wrote the labs to be unpracticle monstrosities of advanced chemistry. Chemistry isn't hard, she just makes it that way,it makes her feel important. Don't waste your time or money.
Homework is to read a chapter. Quizzed on that chapter first thing in lecture. She then spends the rest of lecture...teaching you that very chapter, after she's already graded you on your knowledge of it. Seems to think "letting you go early" makes up for the fact that her tests take 2-3x longer than her 50 minute time limit. Avoid.
The class was a 4 month long nightmare. I love chemistry. But I swear, there were times when I cried doing her labs/tests. She teaches you simple stuff and you study at home and whoa! you see you test and don't even understand what the hell you're supposed to do with this problem. And you have 10 of them to solve in 50 min. Doesn't teach for final.
She plays games in lab and is manipulative. Many students go up to ask her questions on the lab assignments and the answer she gives you is purposely off track or she will lead you in the wrong direction. If you really need to comprehend this class and it is important for you to do well, avoid her at all cost. She is the worst teacher ever.
Great woman, knows her stuff no doubt. Kind and answers questions and encourages deeper understanding. Simply sadistic test maker; does not teach for tests and will be as tricky as possible. Tests should be testing what material should be learned: if they need to be so difficult she should teach as difficult problems but simply does not.
simply put: if you're moderately intelligent, you'll realize lydia is a fantastic human being
Great teacher! She is tough but it made me so much better prepared for my other chem classes so I'm grateful for it. Her tests were tough but fair. She was also nice and helpful.
Not a fan. she picks favorites and made it obvious laughing and talking to them all the time. the tests are not too bad but I really disliked her. Not approachable
No idea where the neg. comments are comming from. She is extremely approachable & helpful. her tests are more difficult than other 151 prof tests, but not impossible. Pace is fast - lots to cover. Many students are not used to not getting "average' grade of C. A's are for SUPERIOR effort. people are used to inflated grades so don't work hard
She isn't all bad. She certainly knows what she's talking about and is quick to correct you, making sure you know exactly what you need to know. The 50 minute class I have with her MWF does her no favors, and this leads her to talking entirely too fast for most to understand. Test averages are low. Take my advice: Utilize the labs and learn there.
She doesn't teach the material. Where is the teaching??? I don't have the time to teach myself. HORRIBLE!!!!
She is a good teacher. Quick paced but always got good grades in labs because if you asked she always pretty much handed you the answer or told you to go back if you were wrong. Always allowed out of lab early if work was done. I would take her again. Very nice, funny, and approachable.
She is a great teacher. She really knows what she is talking about. The only suggestion I can give is to sign up for her lab as well. I had Mevs for lab, and she just made things confusing.
She is not a good teacher and her exams are nothing like what is taught in class. She thinks that 65% is "A" work, but she still counts it as a "D". She makes up her own labs and has class favorites. Avoid at all costs!
Good teacher, and extremely helpful out of class. however her tests are insanely difficult.
Lydia is a SAINT and best teacher iv had for college chem. talks a little fast during lecture but its only because she gets excited lol. she genuinely cares about her students success and is very approachable. tests are hard but as long as you put in the effort you will do fine. she is very giving with partial credit on labs and tests. LOVE her!
I think she try to intimidate the students by given hard test. I have never work my behind like I did last semester, and I still end up with a B-. if you are a pre-med, I recommend not to take her class, because a D will not look good in your transcript..
HER EXAMS ARE FIRE!THERE WAS TIMES WHEN I WANTED TO CRY MY EYES OUT RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE EXAM! SHE TALKS SO FAST! SHE ASSIGNS LIKE 3 HOMEWORKS THE WHOLE SEMESTER, LABS ARE EASY TOO. IF HER AVG IS ABOUT 60% SHE IS HAPPY BUT OBVIOUSLY THE STUDENTS ARE NOT. SHE HAS A LOT OF OFFICE HRS BUT ARE NOT HELPFUL SINCE HER OFFICE IS FULL OF TEACHERS PETS
she was a great teacher. knows the material. is willing to answer questions and is pretty much always available for office hours. very fast teacher tho so keep up.
One of the best teachers to MCC. The tests are difficult but if you put in the work you will do fine. This is not the class to take if you want an "easy A". You have to put in the time to understand the material in order to get a good grade. People who leave negative comments cant handle putting in time outside of class or are lazy.
Very nice and helpful teacher. I revisited her often for help in chemistry 152. Class is very difficult and demanding. Tests are a killer with class averages often in the 60's. Lydia sometimes talks too fast during lectures (she acknowledges this) but will help alot in her office hours. Be prepared for plenty o' people in her room, however.
Great professor. Interesting and personable with a good sense of humor. Not a lot of homework and fun labs. Tests are challenging, but she sets you up for success with her lectures and notes and is always willing to help.
She is by far the best professor I have ever had. Her tests can be a little tricky, but she tries her best to make sure you know what is going on. I would definitely recommend her to anyone who hates chemistry because she makes it interesting and fun.
She is awesome. So helpful and very approachable. Best chem professor ive had! ask her about anything she is always there to help.
Do not buy book unless you really struggle. I'm not good in chem but this class is really easy. She is always willing to help and wants you to do wel. She keeps class fun and interactive. 2 Exams and a paper but you only have to do 2 of the 3. Labs are easy to understand and easy to execute. Take this class with Lydia, great professor!
Even though she talks very fast, she presented the materials in a clear manner. However, the "lecture exam" does not reflect the difficulty and materials presented in lecture. And also, the difficulty of "lecture exam" is not consistent with the ACS final exam, meaning the exam is too hard while not prepping the student for the final exam.
Lydia is one of my favorite professors at MCC. Chemistry of indulgence (food chemistry) was extremely interesting, and the homework she gave out were easy. I would love to take another class with her. She also gives us answers for conclusion questions on labs...Easy A!
Took gen chem 1 and 2 with Lydia. Great teacher. Lydia cares about her students as long as the student wants to put the effort in. Her tests are hard but she helps a lot during office hours. And in te classroom it is very interactive. If you want an easy A don't take her but if you want to understand the material do.
Very helpful professor. Helps students with the assignments, one-on-one. She's understandable and relates well with the students. Take CHE 110 with her, it's fun & not as stressful as other chem classes!
Great lectures with helpful handouts and LOTS of office hours. Makes it impossible for you to fail if you truly want the help. Hilarious, kind, takes an interest in her students. TOUGH tests that make you sweat for weeks beforehand. I loved her class and would take it again in a heartbeat.
Lydia is a great teacher and person. She talks fast but she even recognizes this in the beginning of the course, just raise your hand and tell her to slow down - she wants you to understand! If you want a good GPA don't take it with her because the tests will destroy you. I want to say I loved her but the test difficulty ruined the course for me
I want to say I loved her, cause she really is a great teacher and a kind person, but her tests absolutely destroyed my grade and didn't reflect the final at all. To everyone saying she speaks too fast she even tells you at the beginning of the course that she will, just raise your hand she'll slow down - she wants you to understand.
One of my favorite teachers at MCC. Always willing to help students with lots of office hours. Very easy to talk too. Warning test are hard but they will help you! Very fun lectures. Loved her!
One of my favorites at MCC for sure. Easy to follow along with, funny, cracks jokes and still helps you learn. This class was such a good decision and I would take it again for sure. Very helpful and the exams are easy if you pay attention. She gives homework every class but it's only one page and usually 3-4 questions. Definitely recommend her!
This woman is AMAZING. Love her dearly. She is respected by every single one of her students. She puts in 110% to her work and is there for you even when it's not related to class. I wouldn't recommend any other professor. I seriously wish I could take every class with her.
Lydia is awesome! She's very personable and connects with her students really well. Her lectures are clear-cut and if you don't understand anything, all you have to do is ask and she'll help get you to where you need to be. Pay attention, don't skip class, put in the required work outside of class, and get help where you need it and you'll do fine.
I took the honors class, so there was very little homework. But this meant that studying and learning is left completely up to you. She expects you to study on your own, but is very willing to help. She doesn't just answer questions in class, she asks us to discuss it among the class and work it out together. Amazing teacher who makes you think.
One of my favorite professors. Always ready to answer questions. If you come to her with the homework, she will give you lots of hints and even look over your answer(s) before you turn it in. Her tests can be difficult at times, but perfectly fair. Likes the class to engage the material themselves. Would recommend her to anyone interested in chem.
The tests are somewhat difficult, but if you really understand the notes and labs then you will do fine on the test. She as always willing to help students whenever they need it.
Lectures with packets. Those packets are your lifeline to a decent grade. The tests can be very tough. Problems on test will be like nothing you have seen, but if you know the concept and apply them you will do very well. One of the most approachable professors I've had. Lectures in lab to hammer in concepts. Study those packets!!
Great professor, highly recommend her. She's very good at explaining the material and and clear in what you should know. Reading the textbook isn't mandatory, but completing practice problems in it are very helpful. She's always willing to help both in and out of lecture. Hardly ever gives homework, but expects you to know the material.
Gives out lecture notes packets, which are the key to success in this class, so definitely study these. Exams are difficult, but as long as you understand the material, you'll do just fine. Very approachable, and always willing to help. Goes over lab concepts and questions to make sure you understand the material. Excellent professor.
One of my favorite professors ever! Lydia made me very passionate about chemistry, even though I didn't like chemistry initially. Tests are incredibly difficult, but it makes the final seem easy! Easy to talk to, and see during her office hours. Would 110% take another course with her if I could!
This class was a nightmare. I only took it because it was required for my math degree. I made all the right moves, just to get failing grades on tests where as I normally get straight A's. Whenever I ask a question, it's always, "Look at your notes," which I did before.
Excellent professor. Exams were tough, but if you pay attention during lecture and go to office hours you will do good. Very helpful outside of class, and nice professor to talk to. You will need to work hard to earn an A in her class, but it is worth it. Makes material very clear, and gives guided notes for lecture. Would highly recommend her.
Tough exams. if you want a good grade don't take her course. If you're up for a challenge, go ahead! She definitely knows what she's teaching and by the end of the course you will learn more than what you're expected to learn. Makes the national finals a breeze because you've learned a lot.
Lydia is a pretty cool professor but shes a pretty tough grader. She knows when a student has a question or is struggling but doesn't want to ask and will come over or ask if you need help. Shes also able to explain things in a different way if the first way doesn't make sense to you. Shes a professor that is there for the students
Amazing teacher! Very kind and so helpful. If you treat her great she will treat you great. Wonderful human being in and out of class (office hours) and tremendously respected for always answering any question at any point in time. Highly recommend!!
Tien is a wonderful professor! She really makes her self available every day for access for help. She will sit with you for hours giving practice problems or helping on hw or labs. It is a hard class but if you go to her for help or to check over hw you will recieve a nice grade! She is funny and genuinely kind.
If you can not think plz dont take chem 152 with Lydia. she will make you think to get the problems right and that is what I like.
I always enjoy coming to class. Like every other class, put in the effort and you'll do fine.
This class is a freaking nightmare. The professor is so nice, but doesn't really answer questions when you ask them. She always makes you answer your own questions or "look at your notes" which isn't very helpful when it comes to learning. The tests are nothing like the homework which is really degrading when you put in all the work.
Talks way too fast, will also lead you in the wrong direction when you go to her for her help. Then after doing all the work taking a lot of time, she'll eventually tell you it's wrong and it's just like... frustrating to say the least. I don't understand teachers like this. Do not waste your time and money! So unfortunate
this class will definitely be a nightmare for you if you cant solve problems you will study all you want and still possibly get a regular grade. But overall its a good experience to have and the professor is always there if you do not understand how to approach a problem. The best thing to do would be to understand all the concepts in the class.
Pros: Not alot of HW, good in lab, posts her old exams (she changes them quite a bit, but it gives you an idea of what to expect), really good in office hours, lectures are never confusing. Not a harsh grader. Cons: Talks pretty fast. Advise: Do all the textbook problems (its free online) or else her exams will seem very hard and unfair.
Her class was the easiest to pass! She makes she you understand the material and as long as you do the assignments and labs, you'll be fine! Very flexible and understanding. This was a remote class and she did a great job engaging the class.
Prof. Tien is the best General Chemistry Professor at MCC! Caring, funny, and. Wry accessible outside of class. Her exams are hard but as long as you do the practice test, you will be fine. ACS exam is cumulative of CHE 151 and 152!
Professor Tien was everything you would want in a professor. The content in the course was difficult for me but she went out of her way to help me understand it. Lydia genuinely cares about her students and their success in and outside the class. I can't thank her enough!
This professor really takes time to make sure you understand that content especially if you go to office hours. She is very patient and friendly and obviously really knows the course content. Although chemistry is my nightmare, Lydia did a really great job!
This is a very relaxed chill teacher who might teach slightly fast but as long as you attend class and take notes (and somewhat minimally care) you will get an A. She is very considerate and is more than willing to help those who need it. Go in for office hours if you need extra help but otherwise just exist and somewhat give a shit and you're fine
Awesome passionate foodie who genuinely has a big heart. An absolute pleasure.
She's a great professor. Her lectures are amazing and very engaging. The only downside is that her exams are quite difficult, I'd recommend preparing at least a week in advance.
I loved this class and this professor! She was very kind, supportive, and welcoming. I have never been much of a science person, but this class was perfect for me--I learned a lot without ever feeling overwhelmed or stressed, the class was well-organized and easy to follow, and I had a lot of fun.
Class was fun and she made it easy to learn. The labs were fun and the homeworks were once a week and quick. She truly wants your to succeed and do well in her class.
She is great !
Professor Tien was amazing! I was very nervous to take a chemistry class, but she made it extremely fun and engaging. Who knew you could drive deep down into food and relate all of it to chemistry. This class was fascinating! Would 100% recommend it. She was great!
An amazing professor she is easily accessible outside of class and extremely helpful. Her tests can be difficult but not impossible. Be very thorough during lab time as it will come back to haunt you during the final Lab Practical. Overall an excellent professor I would highly recommend.
Lydia is a wonderful professor. She really gets to know her students through lecture and lab, and is very accessible for out-of-class help. It is a tough class but she is a fair grader, and makes it engaging and easy to understand. If you take this class, go to office hours, and be very thorough with your labs to prepare for the lab practical.
I took 152 with Lydia, and honestly, the course is a lot—it covers a ton of material. But she makes everything feel smooth and manageable. As long as u show her that you're willing to learn, she's always ready to help. Her exams are very fair and based directly on her lectures and labs, so if u stay engaged, you'll do well. Highly recommend her!
Lydia is an AMAZING professor!!!!! and I truly respect her. She really cares about your grades if you care about learning and put in the effort. Her exams are very fair, and while Chem 2 can be a lot, it becomes much easier with her good explanations. You'll be fine if you do the practice hws and study from your chapter pack!
Dr. Lydia will challenge you in a way that truly helps you learn and grow. She is very passionate about teaching and about chemistry itself. She is patient, supportive, and encouraging, and she values consistency over perfection. She genuinely wants her students to understand, not just memorize. would take her again a million times.
