A lot of reading, a lot of discussion, a lot of pain if English is not a strong subject. Nice teacher, stays on task, but can tend to talk about a subject for an excessive amount of time.
he is a cool teacher but you have to try hard to get A's on his essays. we always had an essay to do, so we were constantly working.
He gives alot of essays, but he grades pretty easy if you put some effort into it. Over half the class get's A's or B's. Plus, he lets you revise one essay before the end of the semester. His tests on reading are easy too. It's just to see if you read.
Mr. Hong is definitely a hottie.
He's a good teacher and he holds a lot of class discussions which is sometimes helpful. But he grades essays kind of hard.
good teacher...
terrible teacher, very un-interesting, boring voice
Very nice teacher. He sees to it that if you need help on your essays, he will put in his time to help you. Alot of reading, but plus side... easy points. He gives easy quizzes based on the reading. Not too difficult of a grader as long as you don't slack
He is very kind very helpful teacher. He will read over your essay before it's due and help you to make corrections for a better grade. I took him for 2 classes because I really enojoyed haveing him as a teacher. English 1B is a bit more challenging but class discussions make everything more clear.
COOL ENGLISH TEACHER. i personally liked hong a lot. the literature is picks isnt the best but it is easy. sometimes his instructions arent very clear but he is VERY helpful when it comes to essays. quizzes are HELLA easy and he grades on a curve....EASY A/B!
Hong is my home boy! He is super cool! he is understanding and you can email you essay to him instead of bringing them to class which give us last mintue people a few more hours to work on them!
very helpfull, hard grader
Mr. Hong was one of the best English teachers I had. He was very fair and nice, but a hard grader. He wasn't mean, he was just making sure you knew your stuff. I would take him again if I had the chance.
Great teacher!! A hard grader but is very willing to help you .If you don't mind working a little harder for that A and want to learn...Hong is the teacher for you!
very good teaher, very understanding and willing to work with you in almost any capasity
Good teacher. Love how he was funny, very sacastic but nothing to harmful. Really shows you how to write a college paper. shows you how to aruge points and how to make a good thesis statement. VERY GOOD!! I would take him again.
Mr. Hong was a great teacher. He assigned good topics and had really interesting class lectures. He helped me a lot as a writer and I learned a lot from his class.
grades consist of a couple of essays. so, ace your essays, ace the class.
Understands student situations and works with students to complete his/her assignments. Very friendly lecturer. Very helpful. Teaches good. Makes sure the student understood the material.
He is frustrating and vague.
Good teacher, tries to be funny.. Occasionally he is. Class wasn't difficult, just do the work and you should pass.
MR HONG is not an understanding person. he takes things too seriously. I advise anyone thinking about taking his class to drop it and sign up with another teacher.
cool class 5 major essays. he answers your questions and is willing to help. he teaches you how to write a really good essay. he runs your essays thru a data base to see if you turned in someone elses paper. so don't cheat on tour essays and you'll do fine
A great teacher!!!...very smart..his 1a class is great..not difficult at all...the english 15b class was a little more difficult because the material was more advanced, but he does help students if they do not undestand the material..he tries to make class fun and interesting..and it is...if you are an english major....DEFINATELY take his class!
Mr. Hong is definitely a good teacher. His style works for me, and it will work for you too. He's forgiving about your work, and understands when you need help. He's also very approachable, and loves helping students. Take his class, pass with a good grade guaranteed(as long as you show up and do the work).
if u wana get a c take him.. not an ez teacher. grading is tuff. and is very very boring. i had hard time understanding his assigments but i barely made it to c.. i wud prefer to get a W then a c in his class
Great teacher. Very helpful, can ask for help anytime. He made the class very interesting with great reading material.
Mr. Hong is a great teacher. This is not a very easy class, you need to pay attention and to the work. He made class very interesting and the reading material was great. I would take him again.
He wants you to participate, he tries to push you. I received a B in the class... my friend said it's cuz I'm a girl! Homework not too much vs. other english classes!
He is a great professor. You have to put in the time to receive the grade that you want. His assignments are easy and he is an easy grader. As him for help and he will give it to you...He was great for the summer. Not a lot of homework either. four essays? Easy!
Good instructor, first couple weeks of class are tough, a lot of essays. starts to slack off towards end of semester, and dismisses class early. easy B if you get the essays done and go to class.
HE SUCKS SO BAD IN 15A...I TOOK 15B WITH DONELL(WINTER) AND THOUGHT IT WOULD BE HARD BUT IT WAS EASY. BUT HONG IS STUPID AND TRIES TO MAKE HIMSELF SOUND SUPERIOR IN HIS LECTURES. THEN CAN'T EVEN BREAK IT DOWN IN THE CLASS. ITS 4 ESSAYS AND 2 ABSENCE. SO I DONT RECOMMEND AT ALL 4 15A
was never really a fan on english literature, and this professor did not really change my mind. he is nice and quite funny, but cant really relate information well to students through lecture. old literature is already difficult to comprehend, and his articulate manner of speaking does not make it any easier. essay prompts are equally as ambiguous.
really great english professor! extremely helpful- just ask for it! he'll help you get an A. highly recommanded for 1A!
Great teacher. Although there was plenty of writing/reading involved, he did teach me a lot about classic literature.
Hong's a good guy. I took him for English 15A, and I thought he was fair. I learned some stuff, and some of his lectures "opened up my eyes." It was an enjoyable experience.
The best English teacher I have ever had. I had learned more in the 6 weeks I had him over the summer than I had in any other of my English classes. He is a really great guy. Highly recommended.
Honors Eng 1A: Pretty cool teacher. Texts are Gulliver's Travels and Pride and Prejuduce and A World Of Ideas. Honestly, not too bad. There are 5 total essays but you do a working draft first so you get tons of help. And b/c he usually lets us out a little early, theres plenty of time to stay after and get help without running late. Very helpful.
His class is not a walk in the park but is bearable. Gives 5 straightforward essays, gives a lot of help. Rarely gives out written test or quizzes. His lectures can sometimes be long and boring but it helps you a lot with his assignments. Good teacher.
Want an esay A? Then, Mr. Hong is it for you. All you need to do is take note of everything he says in class and regurgitate it in your essay. He makes what he wants in the essay really obvious. However, if you do not pay attention in class, you will not have hard time with him. Also, do not try to argue with him neither in your essay nor in person
Hong is a nice guy you can relate to. However, you must agree with his viewpoints in your essay. He grades real hard, but if you work hard he will give you a good grade.
I really didn't like this guys class. He mumbles /studders far too much to even listen for more than 20 minutes, his essay's revolve around his ideas and unless you put them in your essay you won't get an A. He discourages many, and was very biased to me but to the women apparently not. He can be nice though. I just wouldn't recommend him to anyone
Mr.Hong is a cool person, but as a teacher, a bit boring. He regards his interpretation of the literature as ideal, and other have stated correctly that regurgitating his ideas will get you a good grade in the class. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
he is so cool! i really liked him as a teacher. he is really nice and is always there to help you out. you have like 4 papers to write and an inclass essay. they arent that difficult but hes gives you a while for each. i recommend taking him! you also do group activities often and peer editing, which was helpful
Are we even talking about the same guy? This class was the most boring class I've ever taken at El Camino, and I'm in my third year! The essay topics were difficult and his in class lectures put me to sleep. I would rather watch paint dry than sit through another hour with Mr. Hong.
If you take his class you'll never be confused on what he expects for you. I loved the class and him as a professor. He makes it VERY easy with no questions at all as to what he's asking of his students in order to pass his class. I would recommend him to everyone and anyone. He's an all around awesome guy
He is a really good professor. It seems like he wants everyone to pass and hes crystal clear on what he expects in his class. Its not difficult if you do what you have to do, I definitely recommend taking him!
Hong is mediocre at best.He lacks speech communication skills as he seldom completes a clear thought during lectures. On top of this he views literary works of English literature in a close minded 21st century way. HE simply lacks the knowledge to properly teach the class. If available TAKE 15A WITH SOMEONE ELSE! You'll learn a lot more!
"I'm just throwing this out there..." Professor Hong has got a lot of great ideas in his head, but has a really difficult time completing his thoughts or verbalizing them clearly. He's an interesting guy, entertaining (unintentionally), but if you're expecting a class that's going to be deep and interpretive, make sure your ideas agree with his.
HARD PROFESSOR! WATCH OUT FOR HIM! :/ DEDICATES MOST OF THE TIME GOING OVER READINGS SO THAT MIGHT BE HELFUL, YET HE IS CRAZY ABOUT PLAGARISM! MAKES WRITING SO COMPLICATED ADD THE TOPICS HE WANTS AND YOU MIGHT GET AN OKAY GRADE IN THE ESSAY.. BORING BORING PROFESSOR JOKES ARE LAME AND DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO MAKE THE CLASS INTERESTING. REAL UNORGANIZED
this professor is really helpful and interprets the readings very thoroughly. anyone who says otherwise is lazy, and doesnt put any effort into the class. cause hes one of the best english teachers out there! take him you wont regret. recommended~~
Mr. Hong is a great professor. He is quite humorous and always very helpful. Tho his lectures were a bit lengthy (i took this class during summer) if you pay attention, he hands you everything you need to write your essays on a silver platter. ANALYSIS is really the key oh and make sure you cite he, like all other prof are big on plagarism!
Professor Hong is excellent! He is funny and very fair. He really cares about your education and is there if you need his help. I had a great time in his class and recommend him to everyone. Thanks Mr Hong.
Took his class over the summer. He is a pretty interesting guy, kinda dorky but in a good way. Always took time to help with essays and in class we discussed what we had to write about for the essays. I wrote a Essay on Pride and Prejudice by class discussion and teacher/student essay conference alone and got A on it. I barely even open that book
It was a hard semester, but if you put in the work it's not that bad. Class time is somewhat boring and sometimes his clarity isn't the best. Covered a lot though.
Participation is KEY. He is a great teacher. I am definitely a better writer now. You will learn A LOT. 5 essays total, 2 quizzes. He tries to scare people off in the begining because he likes small classes. Tuff grader. Just make sure you listen CAREFULLY to what he says, because he tells you excactly how he grades essays. Write it down!!
Great English teacher. He is very helpful. He is kind of demanding and a perfectionist when it comes to writing Essays but that's a plus since it's English class hello! Show up, research and read, and be elaborate in your essays.
Great teacher! The honors six-week summer course has been intensive, but beneficial. If you pay attention, work hard and dedicate the time, I believe you can do well. I think I'm a good writer, I worked hard in this class, and I've gotten an A on everything that has been returned to me. Hong mixes in just enough humor too. Recommend it!
he is really helpful and if you dont understand anything he'll be glad to help. assignments are doable, but they aren't easy A's. Hes willing to help anyone who asks. you read pride and prejudice and a few other essays. attendance counts. don't be tardy
Mr. Hong is a funny guy. Had him for Honors. He pushes you for good work but it helps out in the long run. You use the text (either World of Ideas or Pride and Prejudice) most all the time. 5 essays through the semester.Helpful to go everyday.
Pretty easy as long as you read the material. I took the honors course, but it wasn't too difficult. We read interesting books and essays so it was pretty enjoyable! He has a good sense of humor so it isn't boring.
His a wonderful teacher. Funny at times but class itself is a bit boring. Not too hard and he's very helpful if you don't get the topic. Overall an okay teacher
Hong teaches Eng. 15A with close attention to a few major texts, rather than a broad survey of literature. The class analyzes works in painstaking detail, and Hong has some fascinating insights to offer. However, he repeats discussions and rambles sometimes, which can waste time, so I left the course thinking we could have covered more than we did.
i enjoyed this class. We watched "The Matrix" "No Country For Old Men" and part of "Pulp Fiction" ...need i say anything more....
hong is a good teacher, he likes adding funny jokes in relation to english and we watched a couple movies, it was interesting to relate them to literature. he offers extra days to finish a late essay and he is willing to help people after class. he also tells u the prompt of each essay ahead of time.this class made me like english.
i came in expecting to do quite bad since i had a bad history of doing bad in regular English classes let alone honors. i was surprised at how well i did. Most of the grade if i remember correctly 90% is essay grade. Make sure you pay attention as he goes over how to write the essay assignments. Do it the way he tells you, and you will do good.
He is not what I expected. He was veryyy easy. I passed without even trying one bit. Hes very nice and lets you turn in essays up to 3 days late. but dont be absent he hates it when you miss class. Take him even over the summer no regerets!
Assignments and expectations weren't clear. Reading material was questionable. He's a nice person, but if you like clear instructions on what the assignment is and you care about your grade I don't recommend him.
Took him during the winter session. He is a moderate grader, so need to work hard for an A, B and C are very easy. Follow the structure of a body paragraph, dont worry about the flow. Never absent and late.
He is a nice guy, but he grades very strictly, his assignments are unclear, he wastes a lot of time on things that are not necessary.
you'll succeed in his class as long as u do the work. he assigns 5 essays, and they get harder throughout the semester. he gives only about like 3 homework assignments, and the rest of the semester is all essay revision. other than that, you'll be fine
Great teacher. Take his class his essays are easy! There's 6 essays 2 of them are in class essays they aren't hard at all!! his Final is one of the essays. His homework is basically just the essays. He's a easy grader i passed his class and i missed a lot of school I don't recommend you miss school i only did 5 essays and still passed x]
extremely halpful
Professor Hong is a great teacher. He went over the material very clearly. I enjoyed the books/short stories we read for his class. Just follow the guidelines and you'll do well. He grades pretty fairly.
he is a very nice teacher gives great examples for the essays long as you follow the guidlines he hands out one should do very well in his class
Such an excellent teacher. Everything was easy to understand, class was never boring, if you ever have a question he is there to answer at any time. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
best English ever! i loved his class, super easy. in totally it was 5 essays, a few quizzes. mr. Hong is very helpful and easy to talk too. i high recommend him. i used to hate English but after i took his class i love it. he is just amazinggggg
awesome teacher
TAKE THIS TEACHER. YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT.
very rude and goes on and on about anything that comes to mind NOT clear when it comes to explaining very bad professor do NOT recommend
I took his honors class in summer. 5 essays total, few quizzes(very easy), and group works! Participation and attendance are important. He loves to help students. Always take advantage of conferences! Know the material and pay attention in class- you will be fine! He gives extra days to turn in essays.I learned a lot so you will too !
He's a good teacher. I don't know if he always does this, but when i took his class he'd have a teacher assistant help out. she'd meet with us and would check our essays and give feedback on how to improve your essay before it due. This is very convenient, especially if you're still confused on the essay. Im even planning to take him for English 1A
Prof Hong is a chill, easy prof. His essays aren't hard but you need to do all the work for it if you want a good grade which means do the rough drafts. There is a bit of reading so I highly recommend that you read what he assigns. He never lets you leave class early so two hours is two hours. Overall, his class isn't hard. Take him for eng 1A.
He often changes his mind about assignments. The final was going to be socratic then he said it's an open book class essay then it was a closed book class essay. He also assigns an enormous amount of points to things that should be about 20-25 points. He says he will send out emails then then doesn't. He keeps saying be more analytic to everyone.
I was an English major before taking his class. 15A definitely only for English majors. Participation is important. Lectures are long and boring. Snooze fest. He is not interested in what you have to say, unless its the same thing as him. Finds a way to mention Pride& Prejudice everyday. I just didn't like him as a person. He is just mean.
Hong was cool but a tough grader. Gives good feedback! Participate for the extra points. Make sure to read the material in depth because he WILL quiz you on them.
if you mess up on a essay that's it you failed he does no extra credit or help you pass the class if you miss points that's it you are done. very vague on assignments but expects very detailed essays and grades hard on them if their not like he wants them. I failed because I didn't properly do citations on my essay considered plagiarism lol.
Honestly, as a student fresh out of high school, I thought college was going to be the scariest experience where teachers were only there just to gain money. BUT,Mr. Hong is exceedingly caring and helpful. For those who have trouble writing or understanding, he's there and wants to truly help when you need him. I TOTALLY RECOMMEND HIM.
the best teacher i've had at el camino so far. He is a tough grader on essays but he gives great feedback and is very willing to help you succeed and answer any questions. Make sure you read the required texts because he quizzes you on them. Very clear requirements for each essay assignment- he gives a detailed packet for each one with examples.
was worried that I would fail the class or he would be a tough professor but in fact that was far from the case. I'm glad I took him for English A. He's super funny and cares about his students. Would definitely recommend
If you show up to class and have not read the material, you will be totally lost. Overall, an okay professor. Expects us to know the answers to his very vague questions all the time. He likes to talk to us as if we are his friends, which always leads to a fun conversation.
Professor Hong is a great teacher. He treats his students as friends and he cares about every one of them. His lectures make boring novels interesting and make complicated things easy to understand. He is a tough grader in regard to essays, but he gives a clear outline on what he wants in them. Overall he was a great teacher.
Overall good teacher. If you have anxiety or are a very shy student, be prepared to get called on. Professor Hong is extremely kind, shows that he cares about his students and loves what he does! Tough grader on essays, but does remind you of his office hours. Make sure to read and understand material for his Quizzes and prepare for the socratic!
Professor Hong was an amazing teacher! Having him go over your essays in office hours before you turn them in will help a lot. He's very caring if you try in his class, but if you don't, prepare to get "the look".
Prof. Hong is the toughest grader I've ever encountered. Although his lectures are informative and at times funny, you definitely have to work hard for a good grade on an essay. You 100% need the textbook or you will not pass, most of his homework, essays, and reading is from the textbook. I wouldn't take him again just because of the grading.
Professor Hong was an exciting class to take. He gives you information related to your quiz. Hes tough on grading but does his best to help you out. Show up on time, submit the work and you should pass the class. If you love writting this class is for you and if you dont be prepared. He is lenient with certain things depending on the situation.
Hes a nice professor and does make the class laugh about this jokes. If you arent too good with writing essays, you in luck with this class. I didnt do too well on the essays and was scared I wouldnt pass the class. Besides that, if you want an early 7 am class, this is the one. Dont miss class or youll get caught up behind and dont be late.
Professor Hong is a tough one and even more so when it comes to grading! You must read a lot, participate, be on time, can't miss a single day of lecture. He criticizes deeply but it's honest and taking english it's needed because all that harsh critic will go a long way when doing assignments and essays. He pushes you to be better, awesome overall
This professor is a nice guy, will try to help you the best he can, but don't let this fool you! You will have to read multiple books that are incredibly hard to understand and are super long. If you want a nice professor but a intense challenge to pass English 1A, take this class.
Professor Hong is an awesome Professor! I took him a couple years ago and I took him again for my last semester! The reading is extremely difficult but you learn a lot about yourself and how you understand the readings. Took him online and he was just as informative. Take him if youre passionate about English!
He is an amazing teacher I loved Mr. Hong class he is super nice and will work with you if you if you put in the work. His quizzes are super easy essays are a bit challenging you must read in order to understand and be able to write the essays. Love that he posted videos for you to see the lessons they can be a bit boring lol but super helpful!
Honestly, a great professor he is more than willing to help you if you are struggling with an assignment. Hes also funny during lectures which makes them not boring. Hes very understanding so as someone who doesnt like English because of all the essays and reading, I would definitely recommend him. You can pass if you do the work!
He was a nice guy and didnt have TOO many readings, but he was a little pretentious and graded hard. He expected a lot of our papers, so beware.
Professor Hong was an amazing teacher. He always provided extra credit so it important to do it for the benefit of your grade. He loves to help and will help you even find quotations for your essays. He definitely helped make the classroom feel like a welcome space with his jokes. You will enjoy this class you just have to be ready to ask for help.
Mr. Hong is a fresh of breath air if you want to get English out of the way. Very clear and concise corrections that he gives you on your essays when you conference with him. He basically gives you the tools to succeed, you just have to commit and make the corrections. Lectures are also fun and helpful, not a snooze fest.
If you're someone who likes an organized professor, I strongly recommend Professor Hong to you. Not only is he very clear with the criteria, he also offers counseling if you need extra help. The lectures were never boring, even as someone who attended early in the morning. So far the best professor I have had here at El Camino.
Professor Hong is by far one of the most passionate, nicest., and understanding professors I have ever came across. If you are determined to get learn, he is determined to work with you. He goes out of his way to help in any way he can. He gives Extra Credit which is a plus! I would definitely retake his class again!
In high school, I was a bad student, only getting a B- as my highest grade. Prof. Hong went over the basics in an amusing and concise way that made learning more enjoyable and rememberable. He gave us ample resources to succeed along with one on one conferences to give feedback and assist with our papers. Truly a caring professor.
He is a very funny professor, cracks jokes every single minute! The class is mid but not too hard unless you slack off and not pay attention, which explains my grade on his class. He gives great feedback and tells you how to improve. My best class for my first year at ecc.
Easy class. Few essays and one presentation. He offers a lot of extra credit as well as help with essays. There is also a 3 day grace period for essays. He does his best to give easy points. Textbook is needed but I would say not required because you do a lot of reading in class. Lectures could be boring but not too bad.
Overall, my experience in the class was just ok. He responds very fast to emails and wants you to learn. He gives notes on some essays, but not all. I would recommend using his office hours for bigger questions. There were 5 essays and several little assignments. It might be easier for a spring semester course, because it was too much for summer.
This professor was amazing! He gave me supportive messages from finishing my essays and supported me throughout! He always responded to emails and was very patient! He is also funny and wants the best for his students. He does give quite a few assignments and essays, but it's easy to get an A if you do the extra credit!
I 100% recommend taking a class with him. He's very kind and easy on grading. if you're someone who has been struggling with this english course, he makes it very easy to pass with all the in class extra credit and group projects. a good class to learn how to socialize as well
Professor Hong makes learning enjoyable with his humor and clear guidance. Though the class can be challenging, he provides ample resources and one-on-one support to help you succeed. I found unstuckstudy a handy study tool alongside the textbook.
He's very rude and always had an attitude problem. He literally argues with me on every writing assignment saying how I didn't follow the directions or that I didn't do the assignment correctly but never actually explained exactly why. He's probably one of the worst professors at El Camino and I don't recommend to take his class.
Professor Hong was an approachable and easy-going instructor who gave clear feedback on essays and had interactive and straightforward lectures. While his essay homework was lengthy, he gave us class time to complete it as well as tips in every lecture.
This professor is caring about his students and their progress. The readings were interesting and the essays were flexible. Professor Hong is a great and respected teacher.
Personally, I prefer a very direct professor. Mr. Hong has a lot of assignments because he likes to ensure that he explains every detail of the assignment and how to complete it, which can be a little bit confusing because it is just over-explaining, but overall, he's a cool professor. Attendance is MANDATORY, a lot of reading, don't procrastinate.
