Nice guy, helpful, but gives a lot of homework and you will have no clue what you are doing if you don't do the homework
I don't understand one thing in the entire course!!
helpful, but sometimes u avoid seeking help becasue u dont want to deal with the creepyness and his lisp. yep, lisp
awful

Very nice and helpful prof, lectures were more enjoyable than I expected. But he wrote our text, so reading it didn't give many new insights. Overall better than I expected.

Terrible Teacher, one of the worst I've had. Tests were ungodly hard, and the lecture couldn't get anymore boring.
who gives multiple choice tests in chem... HE DOES! and he will try to trick you by putting down answers you might get if you calculate wrong... no partial credit whatsoever and there are 25 math problems to do in 50 minutes... ridiculous~!
This guy is a good teacher but the tests are hard, especially in comparison with quizzes (which feature straightforward questions). The tests have difficult combination style problems or are worded in a way which really test your understanding of the subject and not just using a calculator.
Very easy for a chem class. He explains everything well with good examples. Do the homework and you'll ace the quizes. Allows make-ups but takes roll every day. The tests can be tricky so make sure you know the stuff, allows a notecard for tests. Always willing to answer questions. Great guy.
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He's very annoying and confusing. His tests are extremely hard and he gives you pop quizzes with 2 minutes to spare in class. He hates if you ask for him to explain a question he has already gone over that you still don't understand. Don't take him!!
He is a good teacher. Please, do all the homeworks, then you will be ok on the quizes and testes. Trust me, he will never give any difficult questions that are harder than his home-work assignments. Of couse,if you are a lazy person, dont like to do home-works,then you should not complaint about him.
Horrible teacher. Did not learn a thing in his class and had to take it over. Lectures are more confusing then they have to be, and tests are difficult. Doesnt like to answer questions. Dont take him if you can avoid it.
He's not half as bad as people are saying. Tests are hard, but when i actually spent a couple hours studying, I got a 96%. It's college, it's going to be hard, but he is helpful and a nice guy.
OK, this guy accused my lab partner of cheating off of me!! My freakin partner who was trying to draw a diagram, lets ignore the fact that we both have the same answers because WE ARE LAB PARTNERS!! Oh and he wrote the textbook for the class, so his ego is the size of MU.
His lectures are super boring but he basically feeds you everything on the test. If you spend anytime at all doing the homework and atleast skimming the chapters the tests are real easy.
I don't understand why people have a problem with Dr. Rickard, but he's VERY helpful. He explains everything you need to know. If there's anything you don't understand, he will and can help you if and only if you give him the chance. See for yourself.
AWFUL professor! Reminds me of SATAN. Not teacher material. His ego is larger than texas. Tests are impossible and he makes them harder than they have to be. plus he wrote the book, so if you try to read it, you'll be just as confused (if not more confused) than when you began reading it. You might get a C if you do the homework.
Chemistry is a tough subject; there are lots of new concepts. Just try to take it all in in class, and if you still have questions just ask him. He is more than willing to help. Your grade will depend on how much work you put into it. The working the hardest will get the best grade.
Absolute moron!!!!
Don't believe all of those not helpfulness and unclear crap. This professor was very helpful and very clear in class. He makes sure you understand the material. The tests are NOT impossible. The book was easy reading. There are a lot of examples and problems to do to help you understand the material. Try the class for your self.
Very helpful, just visit his office! Always ready to answer questions. Quizzes based right from homework, gives example test out. Don't listen to people who say he's bad, he offers help whenever it's needed.
I took Dr. Rickard for both chem 111 and 112. I thought he explained things well and was always willing to help. Good prof to get you started with chem courses.
He is very helpful. Is chalkboard work is extreamly fast and unorganized, which makes note taking an absolute nightmare. You have to be on your toes every minute of class or you'll be 100% lost. I admire his enthusiasm, but his teaching method needs work.
Bad prof. not questions asked- very unclear on the chalkboard, gets too carried away with lecture, can digress to something and then lose you too easily. Lab is bad too, if you don't do it his way, he will not like it.
I love Rickard!
Dr. Rickard is a very good professor and considering that he wrote the book he does know what he is talking about. His class is only horrible if people don't take responsibility for themselves and study and do the work. No HE WILL NOT JUST GIVE YOU AN A, YOU ACTUALLY HAVE TO DO SOME WORK. OH MY GOD!!!!! THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS, RUNNNNNN...
This guy is awesome.seriously.he'll help you anytime and will explain it until you get it.probably the best professor I ever had.If he taught every chem class I'd change my major to chem.
I'm not the kind of person to say bad things about professors, but this man is just not good. For a 100 level course, he makes it excessively detailed and hard. I know that this is the sciences and things must be done right, but he never tries to joke in class or attempt to help the student. I would not take this professor.
I took this class for a summer course, and he made the massive amount of material that was crammed into 4 weeks bearable. Chemistry was never my favorite because of the mindless number crunching;however, he put it in terms in which I understood what was going on in the physical world. He's not nearly as bad as I expected, based on the reviews!
This class was the worst I've ever taken at MU. He comes off as a nice prof. at first, but gets progressively worse as the semester continues. Very big on the details and for a 100 level class he goes over the edge. I know this is the sciences and not everything is easy, but come on. These are intro courses...they are refreshers!!
I found his teaching style to be extremely clear, and he always welcomes, if not expects, students to go to him for outside help. Tests are reasonable considering he gives you nearly identical back-tests to study from, plus he holds review sessions before every test. Best chem pofessor i've had here so far, he'll go out of his way to help you.
I took Rickard for 111 and 112, and I grew to like him. He can be boring, but it's Chemistry. I thought he was a nice guy, and very helpful if you don't understand something. Just study and you'll be alright.
MY FAVORITE TEACHER EVER!!! Dr. Rickard completely turned my dislike of chemistry around, I declared chem as a minor because of this man! Very approachable, very intelligent. Allows the use of a 3x5 notecard during tests. You can put anything you want on this notecard. He explains in the beginning of the year that if you do the work you will pass
Not one to say bad things, but this guy doesn't even attempt to make the class interesting. He shows no enthusiasm, he is dull, and most of all, he treats a 100 level course like a 200 level. The problems he goes over in class are nothing compared to the monster problems on tests. Awful.
Dr. Rickard is awesome! His lectures are pretty good and the weekly quizzes are pretty much straight from his assigned problems. He is very helpful and is always willing to see you during his office hours. His tests are kind of difficult but if you completely understand the material, you'll be fine.
I had Dr. Rickard for Chem 111 and 112 and don't know where the hatred for the man is coming from. He explains things in detail multiple times so that you understand things. He teaches off powerpoint but elaborates thoroughly. His quizzes are exactly from the homework, and his test straight from the practice tests. Very approachable too. Love him<3
If you do not study, you shall not pass! He likes to arbitrarily take points off tests and labs but he is extremely helpful and explains things very clearly. He doesn't ever collect homework but if you do it, it pretty much guarantees that you will get a good grade.
He is a very nice guy and will help you whenever you ask. He also is very passionate about what he is teaching so it makes it better to pay attention. The only downfall is that he is not big on curving grades.
Dr. Rickard is awesome. He really will help you with any question you could ever have with chemistry. Definitely do the homework- if you don't, you won't do well. Go to his office hours. If you work, you'll do great: I got a 99.5% on the first exam by doing the homework and the practice exam...
Dr. Rickard is a great professor. He's very into it and he is entertaining in class. He's excellent at explaining things and is a lot of help in lab and during recitation. He's a perfect blend of nerd-chemist and cool guy. Def take him if you have the chance!
Dr. Rickard is awesome, definitely recommend taking a class with him. Very clear. The class is difficult, but as long as you do the homework problems, you'll be fine.
Dr. Rickard is a great teacher for Chem 111 and 112. His lectures are very clear and he will always take the time to explain if you don't get something right away. His quizzes are easy if you do homework and if you don't understand something he is willing to go step by step through the problem. His exams are difficult but the class is fun with him.
I had Dr. Rickard for both Chem 111 and Chem 112, and I just had my last lecture with him today. At the end of the period, the class applauded! Dr. Rickard is my favorite professor thus far, and I am very sad to leave him. He makes jokes and teaches clearly. Tests can be difficult, but it is Chemistry, after all; it's not going to be a cake walk.
Dr. Rickard is a very nice man. Because he teaches off of power points, it is very helpful to print them out beforehand. However, his exams are very difficult. There is no curve, so make sure you do well on each exam and quiz. He is extremely helpful during lab.
I had Dr. Rickard for Chem 111 and this is my least favorite class thus far. It's suppose to be an INTRODUCTORY chemistry course and the first test was introductory but past that, yeah right. His lectures are long and very heavy with information. You can't ask questions on what is going on if you have no idea what to ask. Never will take again!!
lectures are very confusing you can skip class and r just better off gogleing what he was talking about from the notes that are posted onD2L. Tests are very hard since they require math and he gives u no partial credit. My class average for tests was always from a 55-60 many people have to retake chem 111 and they end up just passing.
Great guy, gets to through content fast. Complicates things more than he needs to. Test are tough, quizzes not so much straight from homework problems. Willing to help at anytime.
He teaches like he's mad. Lectures are a mess. Labs are awesome. He would help but he is not patient and often gets an attitude
Great class, cleared up many of my misperceptions of content that I had in previous renditions of this class. If you don't understand a topic, find a homework problem relating to it and either figure out on your own or ask him for help which he will gladly do. Labs are completely explained before the start of the experiment so pay attention.
Long lectures, lab work is a grade saver
Extremely hard class and tends to make concepts more difficult than they need to be. For me his lab was not a grade saver, the labs were very long and the pre-labs were a pain. However, he is extremely helpful, if you ask questions he will make sure you leave with a full understanding of the material. You can pass if you put in the effort!
His lectures make sitting and listening into a battle over control of your eyelids, so to speak. Even simpler concepts he'll go on and on about. That said, I thought he was a very sweet guy. I enjoyed his labs; he's easy to approach and always wanting to help. Laugh at his jokes. Please. He posts practice tests, use them and do the homework!
Lemon Snickers! He's a nerdy cool guy. Occasionally shows chem jokes/memes. Tests are very easy in intro classes.
Dr. Rickard was a great professor. He is very knowledgeable on the topic and is more than willing to answer questions if you show an interest in the class. I would take him again without thinking twice.
Overall, Dr. Rickard is a good professor. He genuinely wants you to succeed and he will help you without hesitation if you reach out and ask questions. He just really wants to see that you care about your grade and the course. I struggle a lot with chem, but I would have done much better if I had gone to his office hours more consistently.
He was a great chemistry professor and cares about his students. The class wasnt too bad and if you have questions about the material hes more than happy to help. He really tries to make the class enjoyable.
Test heavy, lots of homework. He expects you to do problems for eg 40-80 from Wednesday to Friday. Test and quizzes are nothing related to the homework, even recitation instead of he teaching us the material he just assigned groups and make us turn in the paper without asking if we needed help or anything. Worst CHEM professor.
Dr. Rickard is a great guy. He is hard on grading so dont forget significant figures. I passed his class by Gods grace tbh. His criteria is however clear, if I wasnt lazy I could have definitely finished with a B. But he lets you use a note card on your exams!
I only picked test heavy because there was quizzes every Friday, three exams, and a lab report due every week. He is a great professor, knows what he is doing, and the same can be said if you have him for lab. He teaches with power points, not many handouts. Exams are easy if you do the practice problems for the quizzes and the practice tests.
Would make me feel dumb if I did not understand material especially in lab. Will hold you late in lab if you do not get the work done correctly so do not take a class after the lab. Quizzes every Friday on textbook problems that are optional but do it to pass. Allows you to re do exam problems you got wrong for a max of 10 extra points.
I love Professor Rickard! He is very sweet and will do everything he can to help his students. He makes sure to stop and ask if anybody has questions, gives thorough lectures, and shows practical examples of the problems during lecture. Definitely take him - he's awesome.
He is not a good professor. Literally just reads off the powerpoint and grades lab reports like they are final papers. Try to avoid taking courses with him he's not engaging with his students and is quite monotone. His exams are nothing like the book problems and his practice exams don't help. Avoid him
Some think Doctor Rickard is a strict professor who grades too harshly but thats false. If you pay attention, do the homework, and study you will easily get a B in the class. He has tons of office hours available for students. I go there when I struggle with the homework and he goes over the problem IN DETAIL. He really cares about his students.
Doctor Rickard is a very caring professor who is always available to help students outside of class. I go to office hours frequently and my grade has been improving ever since. He goes over the problems with you, step by step, and gives you his notes for you to keep. My advice is put in the work and you will succeed in this course.
I will not lie, Dr. Rickard is a pretty difficult professor. He expects a lot out of his students, but makes sure to give you all the materials in order to excel in his class. Do not skip out on the homework, they prepare you for the weekly quizzes and help you prepare for the exams. His exams are hard, but he gives 10 point make up to boost grades
He is the worst professor I have ever had. I have been sick all of 2022, and have missed a lot of classes for it. He has no zoom and doesnt tell you what you missed. I missed a quiz one day and went up to him to ask when to retake it, and he told me I wasnt allowed to because he didn't want to make a new quiz. Horrible professor.
I have mixed feelings about Dr. Rickard. He was very enthusiastic while lecturing and you could tell he cared about what he was teaching. BUT, my complaint is that he loves his own textbook. The quizzes relied more on your ability to memorize the homework problems rather than your ability to actually do the problems.
This class is taught like a 300 level class, but it is a 100 level class! Labs are fun, but lectures are awful and tests do not reflect content on the homework or lecture. Professor also wrote the textbook for the course and will remind you of that constantly. Take any other professor or transfer credit if possible. Avoid.
He's a very tough grader. He reads from PowerPoint slides that are straight from the textbook that HE wrote. Quizzes every Friday that are based on textbook hw problems. Exams are hard. Not many assignments are given throughout the semester that could help boost your grade. I suggest avoiding this professor and choosing another one if you can.
Dr. Rickard has been teaching for 42 years. He has a passion for teaching it, but he forgets what it's like to learn it from the beginning. He quizzes every Friday that are questions verbatim from the book (which he wrote). The labs are easy enough, but the final lab is killer. His exams barely average a passing. Attendence and book is mandatory.
He explains stuff really well during lecture and lab. His exams are pretty tough, like if you get one multiple choice question wrong you lose 4 points. He does give extra credit to help make up the points. Lab wasn't that difficult. Pre-lab quizzes come from your lab notebook (lets you use it), and lecture quizzes come from the HW problems.
He has a great passion for teaching Chemistry. When the lecture hall seems dead, he'll throw in a joke that relates to the students and generally makes everyone laugh and get focused. Lectures can be hard to follow along to but going to office hours help a ton. He wants you to succeed, I'd he takes points off for laziness. Take his class!
