****!!!!!!!!!!!
Highly Recommended
Excellent Professor
She's a good lecturer, yet a tough marker.
She is what teaching is all about
She is the best there is, was, will be!
One of the best professors I've had. Her class inspired me to take more CLST
I've taken a number of classes with her and she is THE best that UBC has!
she is so wonderful that words can describe how great her teaching and she is!
she is worth taking even if you aren't into classics
She's great! Hard marker though. But GREAT! And she's funny and helpful and totally understanding if you happen to miss an exam or something.
She's nice and funny, kinda tough but reasonable. Short answer questions are hard, but fair essay marker. Enthusiastic about course.
Also had Rae for 305. She's one of the best UBC profs on campus. Friendly, clear, organized and a fair marker. You couldn't ask for a better prof.
Dr. Rae made the class so interesting that I decided not to drop it as I had originally planned to. Throughout the year her enthusiasm was great and she was ALWAYS ready to help.
She rocks. One of the best profs at UBC, for sure.
An excellent teacher, really tries to get the students excited about greek mythology
She is GREAT! She tries to get to know all her students, repeats anything we don't understand and is very understanding. Exam was incredibly easy as long as you had a basic understanding of everything. You had to know one or two dates.
she is such a good teacher. she's clear on the material covered & she makes sure that she gives us "no surprises" on the tests. she makes classical studies THAT much more interesting. :)
Fantastic prof. She made an effort to become friendly with the class and learn names even though it was fairly large, and always encouraged great discussions. The TA's were also great.
A UBC treasure. Take her class before she retires or goes away.
She's the best professor I've had at university. She understands how to teach the material better than everyone else, and knows how students learn. I really wish there were more profs like her, committed to teaching students.
good teacher. sometimes can get a little corny with her jokes, but at the same time it lightens the mood of the class. she makes students feel really comfortable around her. i like the way she tries to learn everyone's name in class.
She explained everything so clearly, and took so much time to make sure we understood everything. She's very admirable in that she took the time to try to remember everyone's names in a class with over 50 students. Wow.
Really nice, made a large effort to make conversation with individual students. Never see that in a class of 100. Passionate about what she teaches, and it'll rub off on you. Lectures are good, take notes, exam material there. Not hard to get an A at all.
Great teacher, lots of fun...but this course is MUCH too intense to take in the summer!
great teacher best course i've taken here
really nice teacher. she'll do anything in her power to help you with absolutely anything. she's super easy marker too. if your TA sucks and marks hard, ask for her opinion, she'll probably stand up for you!
After reading most of the posts, I think she must just innately hate me. Anytime I have gone to her for help she was EXTREMELY rude and angry with me for ever "bothering her". The course itself is pretty easy if you're good at memorization.
Horrible. This course went from a 90 average last year (diff prof) to a 70 this year (with Rae). She is rude to her students and is totally confused about the course content. She herself has said that there are too many loopholes in the computer exams for this course. AVOID HER LIKE THE PLAGUE.
Constant revisions of text, having to appeal incorrectly marked answers, terrible instructions on tests.. by far the worst prof I've had at UBC. She's been no help, and the revised course was a failure. The prof should realize very few take this course because they're interested in it.
She is not a good prof i.e She Sux.
The course requires a lot of time. Overheads were hard to read. The course notes contains too many "errata".
Lyn is a great teacher. I got along with her so well even though she failed me the first time I took the course. She offered a lot of help outside class and let my friend take some quizzes late because she has trouble under pressure. Some might not like her b/c she has a different sense of homour
at the beginning it was ok then it went downhill from there.the terms kept on getting complicated, and though there was explanation it didn't help enough.this shouldn't be a webct course, paper exams are better and fair.no offense this course should be taught by someone from the health sciences dept.
she's no help. never put important stuff on the webct
The online tests get harder as the term goes by. Should probably stick to paper tests because of computer glitches and the amount of appeals students submit each week. Too many revisions and "erratas". Class should switch to another lecture hall for better clarity. Should not be a WebCT course.
Really nice prof. Course worthwhile to me. Revisions made, but that's what class was for! You get what you put into this class. Somebody's pointing out how the average has dropped so dramatically for this course... well they used to have access to all the old tests! Nothing to do w prof!
she never put important stuff on webct b/c thats wat ATTENDING class is for.
This course has an easy reputation, but it's NOT THAT EASY. NOT because it is technical, BUT because it's time consuming. Who the heck wants to memorize a chapter full of words once a week in the midst of assignments and midterms? It's nuts!
The complaints here seem a little like whinging and don't reflect the prof I know. She expects people to work hard, and she's fair, kind and more than willing to help out.

if you have enough time to study and memorize words then take this class. The prof is a very nice prof. The platform has changed and is harder than last year. if you taking 4 other courses and you think you won't be able to give enough time, then don't think of an easy A.
nice person, terrible course if u r expecting an easy A+. this course is NOT easy, bad time schedule, Bad facility, too many errata's. very time consuming.
This course requires a lot of memorization, but it has helped me a lot with other courses, especially physiology. If you are not planning on going into life science or medicine, it is not worthwhile taking the course.
Very nice and probably one of the most helpful profs I know. :) Very friendly and always willing to talk!!! Loves saying Hi when you walk past her office.
SHE'S DAMN MEAN

I can honestly say without a doubt that this woman has singlehandedly saved our Latin 100 class. After the botched effort of professor Papiannnou, Lyn has made me enjoy latin again. Extremely helpful, kind, witty, and will explain the dickens out of a concept until you get it. An amazing teacher.
Lectures promote class discussion, her jokes can get annoying, a bit more history focus than I thought it would be, course material chosen could be better, easy exams.
Best prof. I've ever had - very clear and willing to help outside of class, she knew everyone's name in a 100 person class! Willing to listen to your problems (non school related). A very fair marker (and the TAs are great too). Class was very interesting, she is very good at lecturing.
Oh, Lyn. How I love thee. Very lenient, cares genuinely about students. Yes, she appears frazzled at times. Tone of voice may come across as mean, but that's just how she talks. She's a loud, vibrant person like that. Made Latin very bearable. I'll look forward to 300-level with her next year.
The best prof ever. She's friendly but also really good at teaching. It was a subject that could have been so lame but she made it enjoyable. Highly reccomended!
This class was so incredibly boring. She's a very nice lady and extremely willing to help, but I would definitely not be majoring in classical studies if it were solely based on this course.
Very nice prof with an amiable nature. Not too hard as long as you attend the lectures.
I hated this class-so boring. She's a nice person though. Got to know all our names. My ta made this a class a lot better and bearable. Still, I will probably never take another classical history course again.
Although she is a nice person when it comes to the lectures and office hours, her marking says otherwise. Your mark will mostly be elevated by your tutorial marks (essay and MT), but will drop after taking the final that Professor Rae marks........
pros: nice, tolerable professor, tries to be funny, sometimes interesting, minimal amount written on overhead, last class not taught cons: overwhelming amount of material covered each class, can digress, sometimes boring, tests largely based on memorization, expensive course material
Disarming, friendly, and at least tries to be funny. Perfect personality to ease freshmen into university. I also applaud her for daring students to ask "so what?" about the material to make us dig deeper. Unfortunately, this insight is often lost in lectures made up of either digressions or lists of facts to memorize. Recommended, albeit mildly.
Now that I'm going into 3rd year, looking back on 1st yr: Dr.Rae's class was awesome. You won't get a better prof, honestly. She's wicked. I am signing up for her 3rd yr course because I know she'll make me excited to go to her class.
A very friendly, approachable prof. quite helpful. This class is very straightforward--memorization that requires a certain type of mind. Be warned though, it is not easy. Huge amount of material. Certainly not a class to be taken in a condensed schedule.
A wonderful language teacher - the best I have had. A very dedicated professor who cares about her students. She has a great sense of humor and establishes a great dynamic between her and her students. Latin is a difficult language to learn but she made coming to class more than bearable.
perhaps the most naturally gifted teacher i have ever had. lyn rae gives 110% for her students and is always approachable and available. i strongly urge any first year student to take a class with lyn as you will not have an instructor this helpful again. also a wise, witty and worldly lady who loves latin lit. highly recommended.
She makes Clst 100 a very enjoyable experience.
Lyn is amazing. She does so much and still makes time for her students. She is very kind and encourages you to do your best. Her Latin exams are straightforward, no tricks or anything. She is a fair marker too. Always provides helpful handouts on WebCT to get through those tricky translations. Very understanding if you have personal problems too. A
Skillful at 200 level teaching, weekly quizzes and thorough review of text, helpful though competed office hours,2 or 3 write answers marked wrong and righly ammended. In 400,picked favorites, avoided teaching meter in verse, seemed to be able to predict students performances, no final paper assigned, only translations, which she was happy to review.
Very interesting, interesTED prof. Makes a course i thought would be boring as hell somewhat fun to attend. not too difficult as long as you pay attention and she is always willing to listen, help, and encourages critical thought/thinking outside the box. Wish more of my profs were like her.
Hands down one of the best teachers I've ever had. Shes clear, concise, encourages independant and critical thought. Her lectures are gripping, interesting and easy to follow. She makes time and then some if you need additional help, and is a clear and fair marker. No tricks or traps to stumble over. I wish all my professors were like her.
great prof
Horrible prof. If u're going to take this course, don't take it w/ her. She is sooo unorganized. She makes modifications to modules, and she forgets to put those modifications under the modifications section. u go on the exam, u lose mark, b/c she isn't organized. and she deosn't accpet ur appeal. worst prof I have had at UBC undoubtedly!!!
I never went to class (material is online so attendance is optional) but the prof did a good job of updating the website.I think people complain about the website because they don't follow instructions properly. Do yourself a favour and take this class! No final exam, attendance optional, clear expectations and an easy A.
THE MOST WONDERFUL PROFESSOR IN THE WORLD--and I'm not even exaggerating. She made an astonishing effort to get to know all 100 students. You don't feel like a number in her class. The lectures are very fun and she's very knowledgeable of the background of her subject. The lectures are very clear and she handles the class with lots of laughter.
Provides very clear and concise lectures. Makes classical history engaging and reasonably enjoyable. If you attend the majority of the lectures, take thorough notes, and skim the Custom Course Materials, you can get an "A." Exams are also student-friendly. Ended up with 86%.
the sweetest woman you will ever meet in your lifetime. brilliant woman. truly knows her stuff. just try to as her something about clst that she won't know. never belittles anyone. truly cares about every student to the extent that she ensures she learnes every student's name in a class of 250+ students. do the readings, you'll be fine.
Such a great lady, and truly knowlegable about her subject. Her lectures were always engaging and concise, and, if you didn't understand something or had something else to say, you could talk to her right after lecture. Going to class is more important that doing readings, though they help too. I'm hoping to get her again in CLST 301.
Generally a good prof in the classroom, sometimes even a wonderful one - but extremely biased behind the scenes. She plays favourites in a very passive-agressive, two-faced way. If she's decided she doesn't like you, you'll see a whole other side of her when you go to her for help. Very unprofessional.
Lyn is no doubt the best prof I've had at UBC. She is so committed to her students and will use different ways of teaching to make sure you do your best. She will do anything possible to help you as long as you ask. She does notice if you're putting effort into the course and improving and will tell you so (what some perceive "playing favorites").
I also don't think Lyn plays favourites. She teaches 4-5 classes per term! She seems equally devoted to all her students, no matter how well or how poorly they perform. I've been on both ends of the spectrum in her classes and in the CLST program. She has done everything to help me. And my friends in the program have also said similar things.
Very helpful, and she's willing to go in depth when people problems.
Easily my favorite professor I've had since I started at UBC. Super concise in everything she says, makes sure you understand, makes sure to learn your name so you don't feel lost in the crowd. As long as you take good notes you should do fine. Class is really interesting and she made it even more so.
Great prof.. not perfect, but wow I can't believe I had the good fortune to end up in her class. Extremely validating and encouraging so far, (which I think is probably what gets her students good marks). She will tell up front, this course is about memorization and "well enjoy your weekend if you CAN" ie "expecting you to work hard at this!"
Can be very helpful but chooses when to be responsive and when not to be.
Amazing prof for such a hard subject. What's you to do your best and will help you in any way she knows how. Strongly recommend.
I thought Lyn was great. She was intimidating at first, but showed a real interest and was more than willing to help if you can get the guts to go and talk to her.
I really enjoyed her class. She's great at clarifying things, and is easy to talk to one-on-one. Her lectures are well-organized and interesting, and exams are fairly straight forward, so as long as you study the notes and required readings you'll do fine.
Lyn is the best prof i have had so far at UBC. she was willing to answer any questions and give help one you yourself rooted out your own problems. she expected a great deal but this inspired a greater interest and greater attention to the subject matter.
A SUPER prof! Enjoy going to class and almost don't want to do bad so that you won't disappoint her. Your problems and concerns are her #1 priority. Crystal clear and willing to make it so in any way possible. Marks very fair and tests are fair as well. Gives plenty of opportunities for you to do well while still making you earn your mark.
I really enjoyed Professor Rae's lectures. She's very articulate with lectures and what we need to know for exams. She's always ready to clarify notes or accept questions at the end of each class. She's a great prof!
Lyn is an all around great prof. She has made learning Latin fun and straightforward. She is always interested in your questions and comments, and is more than willing to help you. Her lectures are engaging and funny, and the work she gives is appropriate to the class' progression within the course.
A really good prof. She definitely doesn't believe in filler words and doesn't pause in her lecturing but is more than happy to stop and clarify in the middle of her lecture if anyone asks for clarification. She really cares about student success and does all she can to help you succeed and is just generally super friendly and approachable.
Best professor that I've had at any University so far. Clearly has a passion for not only the subject that she's teaching, but for creating a wonderful classroom environment that students feel comfortable participating in. I took this course as an elective solely based on the positive reviews listed here and was not disappointed!
I've taken a lot of language courses and Lyn is easily the best language prof I have ever had. She makes Latin easy, which is an incredible feat considering how difficult the language is. She is also always willing to help, and puts in 110% effort into making sure her students are happy. Awesome!
My favorite prof by far. Extremely approachable and helpful, She makes an extremely difficult class managable.I know many students who work harder in the class just because they don't want to dissapoint her, she is an amazing instructor.
My fav. Proff by far. Loved her.
Lyn is a fantastic professor. The best I have had at UBC. I found latin very difficult, but she was very helpful. I even cried in her office at one point (post-midterm, second term), and she was very consoling and eager to help me optimize my studying. If you try hard in this course, you will do well - even if you find the material difficult.
The best instructor I've ever had in more than 10 years of post secondary education at 3 universities in Canada. Those who want an easy course shouldn't take Latin (or any ancient language). Those who truly want to learn the language could not get better instruction than from Dr. Rae.
Lyn is so awesome. Approachable, encouraging, eager to help, truly cares about students, makes class enjoyable cause she's hilarious. Her class is the one to which I look forward to going. It's easy to get frustrated with Latin but she makes you want to work hard. Amazing prof, amazing person. TAKE HER CLASS IF YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR YOU.
She is an AMAZING teacher. Very very knowledgeable of the subject and teaches it clearly, passionately and concisely. She genuinely wants you to succeed and will help you throughout the course. Definitely need to put the time and effort into it. Fun course, would recommend if you can keep up. Learned more about English than any English class.
Amazing
Lyn is an amazing professor! Super nice, funny and helpful. She makes everything very clear; if you keep up it shouldn't be hard to pass.
Amazing. She's just such a natural at teaching. I wish she could be my prof for every course.
Literally an angel. She is a fantastic professor and an amazing human, would highly recommend. She is the third principle part, she's perfect. #latinjokes
Lyn is an amazing professor who really cares about her students and works to adjust the class according to our specific abilities. Although Latin requires a lot of commitment and hard work, she really inspired my interest in the subject and I am now planning on taking Latin with her until I graduate!
She's one of the best professors I have ever had. I came into the class taking it as an elective and I am now planning on continuing with Latin. She gives homework every class and it will be corrected by next class. There's a quiz a week and then two midterms. As long as you keep up with the work there's no reason not to do well.
