Bermann is VERY smart and tries to be clear in teaching a hard course. She is a little unbalanced with her moods though, she can go from smiling and happy to very serious and angry FAST!
Extremely tough for organic chem but thorough and fair. I learned A LOT from Lynaea and she accepted phone calls at home for any questions regarding material. Nice but moody and sometimes condescending toward well-meaning and hard-working students.
She seemed genuinely nice and interested in our learning. She's smart. Tends to repeat things. Usually laid back during lecture, but somewhat uptight in lab. Hard class, study lots and follor her examples in class.

THE WORST TEACHER EVER!!!!
Her tests are completely unreasonable! She will test on things that she has not taught and things she doesn't know herself. If you take her class, question everything because she is often wrong. She does not answer questions either in class or out. Her fail rate is above 70%, closer to 90%!

dont suggest anyone take her. really mean in lab. tests are tricky. take che somewhere else. lectures are very good tho but isnt reflected in the tests. ALOT of memorization.

This instructor is not helpful refuses to sign pass office tutoring. Her labs are fun but she can be difficult and her grading is very hard. This professor is terrrible I thought I loved chem she made me hate it!!!!
She should not be a teacher. She is the most inhuman and indecent. She is the worst thing that could every happen to OCC. She should have never became a teacher. She is useless to anyone that comes in contact with her. She should not be exposed to students. She is incompetent at teaching students.

She is very insensitive, I agree with those comments. However, her class isn't that hard. I think she actually respects you more when you treat her with the same disrespect that she treats you with. She's not there to make good impressions, in her eyes she's only there to teach you. She does a decent job at that.
the tests are impossible. her lectures are pointless. her attitude is unfriendly. her office door is always shut...she doesn't want to see you or answer your questions. stay away!!!!
The absolute worst teacher i've ever had. I did all the homework, studied for the tests and still only managed a C. Tested over material she never talked about in class. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. My condolences to those stuck with her and her bad attitude.

simple. i hate her class. she holds class like she is talking to a group of five-year-olds and she takes lab so serious that fun is a forgin consept. i agree. stay far far away from her and her class. she is very little help.
Hands down, worst professor I've ever had. She teaches by making her class fail, she talks down to us as if we're in the 4th grade, and she'll mark you down for the smallest things. She makes you afraid to ask questions or make mistakes on homework. Save yourself a lot of time and stress, DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR

UNFAIR, INSANE, UNJUSTIFIED
Unfair, not well prepared, made us do everything "her" way , which most of the time was wrong-> super-bad teacher
Horrible, as unhelpful as you can get. Doesn't stick to the test and will not give help when asked. Likes to contradict herself and knock off large numbers of points for stupid things. Complete failure of a teacher and will almost garuntee to fail you. OCC needs to give her the ax!

Do not take her for chemestry she is completely afull.
This teacher is evil. Her tests are very hard anf are not the examples she gives from notes. She takes a lot of points off for stuff she shouldn't. I dropped her and retook the class at southfield and got an A.

Taking this course with Bermann was a huge mistake. I have never had a professor with such an awful attitude. She treated students like unruly 5th graders. I should have dropped the first week but managed to survive. Only a handful of people made it to the end.

She was VERY VERY difficult but I did learn a lot. You have to be really prepared to study a lot and ASK questions if you don't understand. Don't get behind. It is possible to do well if you WORK your butt off.
HORRIBLE!!! u cant say a word in lab or she'll go crazy, when u ask a question shes no help, the entire lab every1 was just so nervous that she was going to blow up! u have to study & work hard in chem but unless ur an expert already then u wont do well. out of 40 ppl there were 4 on the final exam & only 2 ppl passed i droped the day b4 the final
This Prof. is one of the best that I have ever had. we all had heared bad thing about her, but if you are serious and commeted to your work, you should be okay. she is very helpful if you show her hard work. I would say she is, great, knowlegable, and helpful. wants you to succeed if you want to succeed too. good luck and go for it
Awful teacher, constantly yelling. The class started with 40 people, and when I dropped halfway through the semester there was less than 10 people left. Avoid or prepare to waste your money.
This teacher is the worst I have ever had. Save your sanity and avoid her classroom, AT ALL COSTS! She is not fit for human interaction.

AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COST! She is brilliant when it comes to chemistry, but she expects everyone in the class to get it as well as she does and if you have any troubles she yells when you ask her to re-explain something. Most of my class dropped in the first 4 weeks.

OMG do not i repeat do not take this class, if you do and you dont understand something, dont question her about it, shell tear you apart about it.
I would recommend this professor ONLY because she is good at teaching chem. Plan to be taught discipline! Yes, most pple drop/fail, but once you take her course you realize what it means to REALLY study! You can only appreciate her once you're done with her class then get a Mamby-Pampy for Gen Chem! She will prepare you for anyone, any class!Go4it!
and it's a pretty good idea to tape lectures, you won't think you'll need it but believe me it helps. Her lectures go fast. She keeps her pace no matter what, so she can't stop to make sure you understand, other than 1 word answers. If u tape it you can listen later and understand at YOUR pace. This is KEY!
I took this class and was WAY more than prepared to go onto more chemistry AND get a job as a chemist. My boss is very impressed with my knowledge of chem and it is all due to Ms. Bermanns teaching me what is important and how everything fits together. She nutured my love of chem and taught me well!VERY HARD TEACHER and very well worth it!!!
She has mood swings and treats students like pre-teens. Has a Pharm D. but is working at a CC.
Dr. Bermann is an amazing teacher and extremely fair. If you want an easy A then don't take her class because you'll end up whining a lot but if you're planning on taking higher levels of chemistry then she's the best one out there to teach you the basics.
I've never heard such whiners in my life...time to put on your big girl/boy panties and stop whining. She is a great professor however when some so-called adults walk into her class acting like children she has to lay down the law and I'm glad she does. She really knows her stuff...I'm really glad that I took her! The easy way out is not always
shes going to get you in lab. even if your test scores are high, the lab is 20% of your grade. she acts like a fool in there most days. a very good teacher, but horrible at social interaction. she definitely teaches you to think for yourself, if you ask a question she wont give you the answer. all in all i learned a lot about myself and chemistry
This is not a class for those looking to get by until grad school. She warns you that the class is hard. She IS really good at making you learn the material. She is tough on students and expects you to keep up. She will embarass you if you fall behind. Org Chem will be easier with any other teacher you choose but you won't learn as much.
I'm not looking for an easy A,but this teacher is horrible.There's a test every week whether or not she goes over the material.She gives 30 minutes to do the test, then let's you out of class early and don't allow you to finish the exam.I'm an A-B student and I comprehend quite well.Since I've been in college, this is the only class I've dropped.
I studied until i though i knew everything and still did bad on the test. Im all for getting out early, but she blows through the lecture assuming we know it all, and trust me you need to know it all. She even said teach yourself and ill clear it up. Organic chem is not something that can teach youself. Im an A-B student and i had to drop it!
Despite what other reviewers might think, she makes Orgo harder than it has to be while teaching you less than you need to know. As an SI and former student of her's, I know other professors teach the material better. Any of the orgo professors at AH teach better and give you a better understanding of the material without making you feel stupid.
She is a very good teacher but mean as heck. She has a good side too, but you never know what you are going to get. Difficult material, but she covers it well. If you want to pass this class you will have to study hard.
I've never had an instuctor that was such a bad teaccher. She knows her chemistry, but is terrible at teaching it. I've made up my mind to pray for her, instead of being angry. God Bless!
Haven't even finished the class yet, but coming from a 4.0 student with lots of college credits, I think she has been one of the WORST teachers I have ever had. I think she knows her chemistry, don't doubt that. But she shouldn't be teaching it, or be a teacher for that matter. Grading is ridiculous, avoid her class! BAD TEACHER!

Ends class early every day. Skips much material.Spits out material really fast so she can go home.I dropped half way through because of how she taught.Took at Wayne State, learned WAAAY more, and got an A.It's funny how the teacher at Wayne never ran out of stuff to talk about.I need to know this stuff, not just get through some half baked class.
She isn't a great teacher, but if you are good with chemistry and are candidly interested, she is a wealth of knowledge. She is among the most difficult teachers to please, but you will know the material if you pass her class (my C+ was second highest in class I'm told...and one of only 4 passing out of 28 original students)

I have Bermann for chem 1000 and let me start off by saying that shes an evil human being. she wont answer questions, and gets mad all the time. for fall 2009 students "give me a minute"
knows what she teaches,very smart women but she has no patience for others who do not know the material on the same level as her.she rips people apart in class for asking a question so i never asked one. you must attend all lectures or you will be left behind and have to learn everything covered in that lecture by yourself worked my butt off for B

Terrible instructor, would not recommend taking this course with her. She makes organic even harder for her students. Expect to study countless hours studies and still be lost during her tests. Lecture doesnt prepare you for her exam. Pure Pure Hell.

I was a straight A studenet before taking her. She is very mean on her test and a give mean looks when she answers your questions. No extra credit at all.
I pretty much agree with all the other posts. I saw them and after I had no choice, took her anyway. Big mistake! She rushes you when taking exams (eack week) and is a tough grader; no extra points for showing work or anything. No extra credit. Not really any help either.
Shes there for the paycheck. She has NO desire to teach anyone. And very rude. She doesnt let anyone ask questions and berates students for asking simple questions. A teacher so adamant about not being asked any questions at all tells me one thing. They know they wont know the answers. They can only repeat the narrowly defined course material.

Do not ask questions, participate in class ONLY if you are sure you know the correct answer. Failure to do these things will result in your humiliation. As the semester goes on, the class numbers will begin to thin and when there's about 15 students left she will back off the throttle. Memorization is required and asks trick questions on tests.
This teacher is insane and should not be employed. She is very unhelpful and will even stop the class and try and make you feel like your absolutely horrible student for sneezing or coughing. Barely anyone ends up passing the class or even remaining in the class by the end.
Dr. Bermann can be a little rude at times. In order to pass the class you need to KNOW chemistry. There are no trick questions. If you study around 10 hrs per week the class will be a breeze. I would not reccommend taking her if you are lazy, have a full-time job, or not committed. I would not take her again but I did well in her class.

This teacher is absolutely miserable. I recommend her if you like being treated like a 3 year old and love rude remarks, disrespectful behavior, and being screamed at every 3 minutes. HORRIBLE.
I would not recommend this class for anyone who needs to refresh,or learn basic chemistry skills. Dr. Bermann is not willing to help,and will leave you behind if you do not understand due to her extreme lack of patience.She is very educated in hersubject,but her people skills lack greatly.She personally made me feel as if I was a waste of her time.
I would highly recommend going to another OCC campus/teacher if you need to take this class. To me, Chemistry is a difficult, but do-able subject; and Dr. Bermann makes this class 100x more difficult. If you are a straight A student, do not be surprised if you receive a C, as she believes 80% of students perform at average...which deserves a C.
It is worth it to travel to a different campus to take the class, instead of taking her. The money for gas will be well spent to have a different professor, this professor will humiliate you, make you feel stupid and irratate you. Very unpleasant.

I agree with most of the comments on here: DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH BERMANN!!!! I will add this: I can honestly tell you she is THE WORST professor I have EVER encountered... This is not just an opinion shared by students; administrators and other faculty members say the same thing about her (ask them). If you have her as a Prof. DROP!
A very unhelpful teacher. There were 60 students at the beginning of the semester. By the end, there were only 15 who took the final. I know at least 5 failed it. That means only 10 out of 60 passed the final.
My dear friend had a terrible time with this lady. I am a teacher myself and I would never in my life time treat a student the way she did. This lady should not be teaching.
She is by far the rudest teachers i have ever had. In my first class she insulted at least 5 students. She is very anal. she expects students to know chemistry prior to taking this class. I highly recommend students not to take any chemistry classes with this teacher.

This teacher is the worst! She doesn't make anything clear while giving lectures. I studied for her exams for over the recommended amount of time, did all the homework in the text and still having to drop it. It's only the third week of the semester and I have already dropped this class. It seems she doesn't want you to ask questions, and she doesn't want students to help answer each other's questions. I'm sorry I didn't read the previous ratings before I took her class. I would not recommend taking her for Chemistry 1000.

Don't take this class if you're not willing to work hard! Ms. Bermann is actually very helpful if you approach her during office hours. She is very strict and a hard grader. Don't let that intimidate you, though. I enjoyed how straight forward her teaching method is. Nothing on the tests is new info. Just be thorough. Loved this class!
I took this class winter term, as a required class for Nursing. I am dissapointed in the level of helpfullness expressed by this professor. The material is indeed difficult if you haven't been exposed in a while, it was her rude comments, sarcasm and unwillingness to allow students to ask questions that led to my drop. taking it again w/o BERMANN!

Very condescending and rude. She has a chip on her shoulder, will try-and succeed-to make you feel dumb. Don't bother asking questions; she will just repeat your question to you, stare at you and wait for you to answer, barking at anyone who tries to help you. Very condescending. Extremely picky grader. Labs are ridiculous. started with 50 students, down to 13 with more than a month left. Do not take her. Something is wrong with her. Also, asking questions is frowned upon.
Do not take this class with her. She will not help you at all. Is not open to questions. If she asks you one and you can't answer, too bad, she won't leave you alone until you do. Drop while you can. I switched over to Southfield for this class, and I couldn't be happier.
I disliked her at first but then realized that she is just a Chemistry teacher...and all Chemistry teachers are quirky. She would be very snippy with people if they didn't know answers, but if you go and talk to her she's extremely nice and helpful. And honestly the people she called out in class hadn't studied or done the homework. Good for her.
she is a complete genius but extremely scary. she's like harvard level professor. Be afraid, ve very afraid. but if you stick through it, you just might become a genius yourself.
