To the person who wrote the last comment: Too hard? You are clearly a very small person incapable of appreciating a challenge. No help? Did you consider that not being given what you want, does not mean that you are not being helped? What about passion, integrity, and respect for her students? You must not have attended many classes. Your loss.
Great professor! Goes over everything very clearly. Very passionate about the material which makes it interesting for the class! If you attend class, pay attention and take good notes, you should get a great mark.
Classes were very interesting and she is very passionate about what she teaches. With this being said, she is a very tough marker on papers, and often does not accept opinions other than her own or outside of theories. Her marking scheme is overall unfair when it comes to class attendance and participation, very unclear with what she expects.
Very nice, but very unclear with what she expects out of assignments. Dropped some random format on us a few days before an essay was due that was not outlined when the original assignment outline was handed out months earlier. Overall disorganized. Very hard to get an A in this course because of this.
Doesn't post her slides anywhere, expects u to understand her lecture and copy the slides all at the same time, she speaks super fast, she demands control over what activity is happening in every tutorial, and additionally doesn't have a humane side, I asked to explain to her why I think I deserve an extension on a paper, she wouldn't even hear me
I really liked this professor. Her lectures were clear and informative, and she took the time to answer any questions during lecture. Her grading schemes were fair and the course material was is very creative.
Lynda Mannik was unfriendly and unhelpful. During exams, she wouldn't take any questions about the exam questions! She was unclear about assignment guidelines and a tough grader. She was a tough grader not only when it came to assignments, but also when it came to participation. The readings she assigned were lengthy, too.
Dr. Mannik is one of the most interesting professors I have had. Her lectures are stimulating and inspiring. The projects and assignments are co-ordinated well with the readings and tutorials. I would definitely recommend this class.
Amazing prof! Great lectures and she was very understanding and helpful. Even though the strike this year was confusing she sent notices throughout to let us know what was going on and how to stay on top of things. Dr. Mannik actually cares about her students!! You will get a good mark if you do all the readings and come to lectures.
I'm a pretty good student and I don't usually write reviews, but felt compelled to after this course. Run, run far far away. The content is interesting, but for the love of anything ever, do not take this course. The assignments are ridiculous. There was more work in this class than in a 4000 level. Just run and save yourselves.
I had this prof last year and took another course with her because she is great! The lectures are really interesting and she is very helpful in terms of assignments and any other questions.
Really good prof! The lectures and course material are extremely interesting and she is a really good lecturer. She stays on topic, and is clear and straight to the point. However, the course may appear to be a "bird course" but you have to work pretty hard for your grade. Don't go in expecting an easy A
I was super excited to take this course but it wasn't what I expected. Professor Mannik is a nice person but not the best lecturer out there. She doesn't post her slides on Moodle, speaks with little enthusiasm and isn't clear about assignments. In order to do well in this course you must do all the readings and attend every lecture.
Really great prof. She is alsways available to tlak about lectures or assignments. This was my first anthropology course and I really enjoyed the lectures. I would take another course with her.
I loved this course. It was really interesting and inspirational. Dr. Mannik is very helpful and the lectures were always interesting. Take this course!
I wasn't sure I would like this class because it is not a topic I am familiar with but Dr. Mannik made it so interesting that I ended up learning a lot. It is also one of the only courses I have taken that has a experiential learning component where we went out inot the community to observe various activites. Really interesting!
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Mannik is a great lecturer and a fair professor. The material is interesting even if you have never taken an other anthropology courses. I would recommend this course. You do need to attend though.
I took this online course with Dr. Mannik and learned a lot. It isn't a super easy course, like you might imagine and online course might be, but the amount of work is no more than a regular off-line course would be. The course readings and videos were really well organized and easy to follow. You do have to keep up every week.
I loved this course and learned a lot. It was not the easiest course I have ever taken but really interesting. Probably one of my favourites at York.
Really interesting course material. Great lectures and films. I really learned a lot and would take another course with Dr. Mannik
Great course material, terrible prof.
The lectures are EXTREMELY dry.
Honestly, the course itself is really interesting but her teaching style is so boring.
This online course is a good pick for York. Really interesting and great prof.
I was really enjoying this course until the strike at York started. I hope I can finish successfully. Definitely recommend it for anyone interested in a good online course about digital media.
This is one of the best courses I have taken at York. Really interesting and thoughtful lectures. Highly recommend it.
I really enjoyed this course and wish the strike didn't happen because now I am not finished. Will probably take it again if that ends up being an option. Dr. Mannik is a great prof.
The strike ruined my year. I really miss the class and wish we could go back and finish. Would take it again!
Good class. Good Prof. You should try it!
Good online course.
Loved this class. Very unique approach to sexuality. Never took an anthropology course before but I really liked the cross-cultural issues that were discussed.
Excellent course. One of the best online courses I have taken. Full of good information and interesting. Not just a vague or easy course though.
Very interesting course, but if you do not want to complete original online research then don't take it. I learned a lot!
I have never taken an online course before. This Course is interesting and thorough which it should be for a 4th year level. Learning a lot but definitely need to keep up with discussions every week. Will be doing real interviews so good practical experience. Overall would recommend.
Love this course! Learned a lot.
Just had a class on selfies. I love this course and am learning things about digital culture that I never thought of before. Take this course if you have any interest in social media, photography, etc.
Almost finished an online course in digital media. Loved it. Weekly videos and readings were really interesting. I highly recommend this course.
Pretty good prof, listen to her feedback and you will do well. The course itself was very interesting and interactive
Really enjoyed this class. Highly recommend.
Majority of the class had to redo an assignment even when they got above 70s? If youre taking this as an elective to boost your average look elsewhere. Ridiculous course
Heaviest course load I have ever had considering it was a 6.0 course. The final assignment is something that would be more appropriate for a graduate student, it put a major strain on my year taking it. It is assumed that you know about anthropology and research before taking this course, although it was NOT prerequisite.
Hardest course I've taken so far. I would not recommend it if you are not an anthropology major even though no anthropology prerequisites are required. The professor does not provide any clear examples for assignments and expects way too much from students. As a fourth-year, I am extremely unimpressed by the teaching methods.
Do not take a class with her! She does not provide any feedback on assignments and expects you to know everything. There are way too many things to keep up with in this class. Requires you to write 500 word posts every week, while asking you to complete 4000 word essays due the same week. Do yourself a favour and do not take the class with her.
BIGGEST. MISTAKE. Thought I would take ANTH4220 to ease my workload at Schulich and it's literally the course that stresses me the most. 4220 requires so much work and she expects things from students that she never even taught??? (Lit reviews that everyone apparently has to redo). wish I could drop it soo bad prof sucks and I regret my choices lol
The professor expects you to read a whole book or 100+ pages per week and then assigns discussion posts AND assignments within the same week. Tough grader with unclear rubric. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND! NEVER TAKE HER CLASS! Heaviest course load of all my Schulich classes, not worth the 6 credits.
Took this course for credit, thinking it would be a light elective for my final year. The professor has unrealistic expectations. 500 word posts/week with long assignments. What's worse is that the entire class was asked to rewrite a proposal b/c it wasn't up to her standards (INCLUDING PEOPLE GETTING Bs and above!!) Do not recommend one bit.
I took ANTH4220 a couple of years ago and loved it. It is not a bird course and you have to want to focus on some important ethics issues but I really learned a lot so well worth my time. Prof. Mannik is very available for an online prof. and she will walk you through everything if you contact her.
Lynda Mannik was a fantastic professor. She was always available for help with my work, and a very friendly professor. If you pay attention and do the readings, then it's not a hard class.
Great course. I always wanted to learn about ethnography and this class gives you the opportunity to create your own research project online. Very educational and Prof. Mannik was knowledgable and helpful. One of the most best courses I took at York
I have taken a lot of online courses at You and this one is really interesting with lots of explanations of assignments. The professor Mannik also returns emails quickly which often doesn't happen. I say take it if you are interested in digital media.
Good online course if you need one for the summer. It is intense at times but they all are. Prof. Mannik is super helpful.
The course starts off okay and grading was easy. Over time, the tests and assignments got harder and harder. The professor is rude and not sympathetic towards students at all. It's a full year course so I've been stuck with no way out. There are many easier electives available, avoid this one if possible!
Worst prof I have had by far
Loved this course. If you can get in you should take it. Dr. Mannik is very approachable and quick to email you when you need help
Good course. Not too difficult but really interesting materials and assignments.
This online course wa really interesting. We focus on learning how to complete a full online research project and I learned a lot. A lot of practical knowledge that will be beneficial in the future.
Took this as an online class expecting the workload to be light but you have to do long discussion posts ontop of tons of articles and chapter readings weekly. Grades hard yet gives super vague instructions for the major research project.
I took this course a few years ago and loved it. It is a 4th year course so not super easy.
Great online course. Really interesting take on digital media through anthropology. I am a Communications major so it was different but good.
Overall I enjoyed this class. It was interesting and the material was easy to understand. However, I have mixed feelings about Prof Mannik. Cite everything, even common sense because she will take marks off. Not caring or respectful towards students. Decent marker, interesting assignments. Maybe if was more understanding it would have been better
I just finished this course and really enjoyed it. Prof. Mannik is always available, provides lots of feedback and obviously cares about this course and her students. She is strict about plagiarism which many profs are. Really interesting assignments and topic. I recommend this course.
Good course. Would recommend. Best online I have even taken at York.
Dr. Mannik is in her own world. Took an online course and every week we had 3 or more long readings as well as discussion posts Requiring quotations on top of other assigned essays and proposals. Had to email about grades more than once when I received 0s on completed assignments, each time she had mistakenly left out a number. Stay away!
Professor Mannik's online course was great!! It was very interesting and there were always new and different topics to do each week. She gave great feedback each week and it was always very detailed. The course material was very interesting and the online format was great, plus there were no pre-reqs and it was a third year course!
I had a good experience with Dr. Mannik and this course. It is a 4th year course so not super easy, but that is clear from the syllabus and assignment information. If you want to learn how to conduct online research it is a great course. I felt that I got a lot out of this course besides just a grade.
Good online course. Prof. Mannik is creative and helpful. If you want to learn about digital ethnography, I would take it.
I am taking this course right no and love it. If you want an interesting anthropology course for the fall I would highly recommend 3040.
I really enjoyed this course. It was excellent for learning how to do ethnography online. Dr. Mannik is online frequently and provides lots of help when asked.
This is a good online class that is structured well. You will work hard but also learn a lot. Prof. Mannik is online frequently and ready to answer all questions so you do feel like you have a lot of support. Good choice.
I am taking this course right now and love it. Interesting assignments that let you do your own research online. Not too heavy for an online course. Dr. Mannik is great
Great course. If you want to focus on digital culture and anthropology it is really interesting. I would highly recommend.
I found this course a bit more condensed than other online courses I have taken but worth the credit. I did learn a lot and a lot of practical concepts that I can apply to other aspects of my life. Good choice for the fall.
The material is out-dated, drawn out and the instructions are convoluted. Homework heavy.
This class is so over-intellectualized and tries to convince you you're learning something, but if you're wise you realize that all the material is a bunch of babbling jargon that does not encourage the free thinker. The marking scheme and content is similar- her instructions are so unclear as others have said.
I took this course this summer and loved it. The assignments are very clear and Prof. Mannik was available 5 days a week, which a lot of online professors are not. I highly recommend it and the grading is generous.
This is a good course. It is the first anthropology course I have even taken and was worried that I might not do well but Prof. Mannik helped me understand the materials and it is all relevant to everyday life.
I regret taking this course. Very heavy discussion posts required, quiz due every other week, and vague instructions provided on assignments. In email communications she is difficult to communicate with - very uncaring and zero understanding towards students with disabilities. Outdated content in her lecture material.
I just read through the last rating and disagree. The load is not heavy but focused. I really enjoy the content and topics in this course and they are so relevant to our online culture. Especially in 2020. I recommend it.
This course is NOT easy, it requires a lot of work every week. The prof has clearly admitted that she will never give anyone a 3/3 for discussion which is beyond infuriating. You will be spending hours doing readings, discussion posts and responding to 3 of your peers.. the prof is also very unclear and confusing with what she wants.
I really regret taking this full year course. Every week there is either a 5 step discussion post or a quiz. Lectures are pre-recorded power points with no sub titles, just voice over (she talks very fast, hard to keep up with). Prof is very uncaring and communication is minimal. If you do not do the work, she doesnt care and you will fail.
It will haunt me for days that this prof has the score that she does, enticing students to enrol in her course. That was once me and I can tell you first hand, this class was one of my biggest mistakes. All I can say is anyone who likes her is suffering from stockholm syndrome. No empathy, tough grader, unclear about what she wants and CONFUSING!!!
Taking this course was the worst experience I've been through during my undergrad degree. The professor is not at all helpful, is passive aggressive in emails and instructions, assigns a ridiculous amount of work, and has a constantly changing standard for grading and assignments. In my final year of uni, and this course tainted and ruined my year.
I couldnt agree more with the other reviews on this course. This year with the pandemic has been difficult as is, most profs are showing compassion and empathy towards there students. Unfortunately, not this professor. Dont take this course. 1000 word discussions weekly, massive papers. Poorly created lectures. No support.
If I could rate a 0 I would.
I took this course summer 2020 and this is one of the most difficult courses I have taken thus far. The content isnt confusing or hard to grasp. My biggest problem with this course was the prof. Many students had issues running the programs required. Prof made it a living hell to accommodate the students and was not timely with grading. DONT TAKE.
I loved this course. Great prof. Kind and accommodating. I wish more online course were like this one.
This course was an easy A for me. Prof. Mannik was cordial in all emails. I would definitely recommend it for your third year.
This was one of the hardest courses I have taken but I also learn a lot and the practical ability to interview people online. Great course for future careers. Prof. Mannik was super helpful. It was difficult creating a research project from scratch.
Great course. If you are interested in digital culture and anthropology, you should take it.
Great class. A is not hard to get. You do have to do the readings and follow all instructions. Course is well organized. Prof. Mannik is great!
For a summer course, there's so many long readings and multiple assignments/quiz/tests weekly! She is not very accommodating or understanding toward students who also work or need extra time. Too many things to worry about in the middle of a pandemic. I wanted to drop this course so many times but I needed the credits.
This was my favourite course of all time, I think everyone should take it. He was an awesome prof and SO nice and respectful to the students. Also so knowledgeable in the area. No class was a waste of time and readings were long but interesting!
I dropped this course after a month. I lost some money because of it but i didn't even care because I just HAD to leave her class. This prof expects so much from her students its borderline insane. The amount of work she assignments on a weekly basis is absurd. Maybe doable if your only taking 2 or 3 classes but not a full load or if u have work!
Worst class of my entire 7 years at York. This professor made 2020 even more stressful than it needed to be. Despite having documented medical accommodations (cancer), she denied me extensions. My disability counsellor told me she was in the wrong and I had to fight it with Academics. I'm now in my 7th year of uni because of her.
took this course b/c i love anthro. WORST PROF EVER. does not care about her students and deducts heavy percentages (20-30) on tests when students have clearly not plagiarized. inconsiderate and very passive aggressive in her emails. does not help students whatsoever. considering withdrawing this course. DO NOT TAKE IT.
This has been the most horrible course I have taken at York. I have learned absolutely nothing throughout this course and it is a shame because Anthropology is one of my favourite subjects. Professor Mannik is very vague in her instructions and will not clarify. This course has truthfully made this year at York the most stressful one yet.
This class is literally awful if it is not a required class DO NOT TAKE IT. She assigns 2500-2800 essays, never explains anything properly and on top of that assigns so much work during the week. She acts like this is a 4th year 9-credit class. I've taken a lot of other 3rd year 6 credit classes that were much easier then this.
I love this course. It was not as difficult as the last few mentioned. In fact, it is one of the most well organized and easy courses I have taken online. I love anthropology and am really glad I took this course. Try it.
Good course. Easy grade but you do have to focus and get the weekly assignments done. Interesting material and readings.
The worst professor I have EVER had in all my years of education. Her class is so boring that it makes you want to fall asleep. Not lenient AT ALL, and a very tough marker. She treats a third-year course like an 8th-year course. She is aggressive in emails and considers a 10-page essay "short." Plus she gives awful instructions and lecture content.
DO NOT TAKE A CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. Although she is a Anthropology professor, she does not seem to know what plagiarism actual is. She takes off large percentages off your work and does not explain the course material well. She expects you to read her mind!! Worst class and prof i have ever had. She is not only inconsiderate but incompetent.
Dr. Mannik is not a disrespectful person and I really like the material she teaches. She has integrity and I have never had an issue with her marking. She has also been very available to answer emails etc. I would definitely recommend this course.
Great Prof. Very caring and loves to explain course materials. Don't miss this course.
one of the best prof's I have had at York. Knows her stuff and explains things in depth. you have to do the readings though.
Took this course last summer and was happy with it. very nice and helpful. the lectures are really interesting.
I really liked this course. One of the best at York online. Prof. Mannik is great. No issues.
I like this course. It taught be about many important women's issues and gave me a new perspecitce. The professor is good. Clear assignments and easy to talk to.
This was one of the worst courses I've ever taken. Mannik has little to no empathy for students. Very intense course load with no direction & vague descriptions. If you email her for clarification on anything prepare to be ignored. Also she has a late policy of 5% up to 5 days, but does not follow it- locks submission drop boxes. Please avoid!!
Don't ever take this class! I'm doing you a favor by writing this review. Please. Just don't.
Dr Mannik is probably the worst prof I have ever had in all my years of education. She is not considerate of students, she's rude, terrible at communicating. Her lectures are so long and boring, I literally fell asleep in every class. This class could have been a very interesting class if there was a different prof. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!0/10 Horrible
Horrible professor. The classes were boring and she made us feel humiliated when answering questions, through passive-aggressiveness. She made two heavy-weighted assignments due in the same week, which is unreasonable. Many students have a heavy workload from other classes. With this being said, I would not recommend taking her classes.
This professor has been the worst professor I have ever had in all of my University years. She has no communication skills whatsoever, no compassion towards her students, she assigned two very tricky and time-consuming assignments due exactly on the same day, and worst of all, she has displayed complete disrespect towards her students. Terrible.
Professor is an EXTREMELY hard marker and deducts huge marks off if citation is even slightly wrong. I took this course as I thought it would be an easy elective, however, it is harder than my fourth year courses. This class should not be this difficult and it's for third year students. I regret taking this course.
STAY. AWAY. WILL DROP YOUR GPA, GUARANTEED. Waste of time.
Professor Mannik runs a challenging course, but engaging lectures and helpful resources like Unstuck ai make it a rewarding experience. The work is intense, but manageable with dedication. Not for the faint of heart, but worth the effort.
