She is a very difficult teacher when it comes to grading, unless you are one of her favorites.
I hate to do this, but I gotta say I would avoid Reini-Grandell at all costs... Maybe it was just me, but I didnt learn ANYTHING from her...and she told me (this is the only time in my LIFE I have heard these words) my paper was too long!!!
Yes, her grading techniques are different and it's difficult to know exactly what you did wrong by her grading. But at least she's passionate about what she's teaching.
This course is pretty easy but the teacher is not. She was such a bag towards all her students and wasnt clear about anything. The only thing I learned from this class was that being the teacher's favorite is important because if your not her favorite...
Was excited to take this class but she wrecked it. Your grade depends on your last two papers... all the work you do during the semester doesnt count for anything basically and when correcting my paper she had serveral spelling and grammer mistakes, such a bag if u want a good semester dont take her
concise and hott in a cool mentor / hippie way.
I can't see why everyone is bashing her. She is possibly the best proff I've had here. Sure shes difficult , sure she won't tolerate a pathetic student , but if you pay attention she is a really good teacher with alot to offer. If your lazy and not motivated however stay away , she's not for you.
lynette is THE best prof i've ever had in my three and a half years of college class in two different states.
Shes just OKAY. I like the class discussions and i know she likes me... so i have it good :P but the paper grading isnt very well... she adds in stuff she would add... not what a good paper should have.
The key to doing well in her class is visiting her during office hours. If you want an A visit and discuss each paper revise it and go back again 2 or 3 times. If you do this with at least two papers you're guarenteed to get an A. Plus she's really nice anyway so it's fun to chat.
She is a terrible teacher! She thinks she is teaching a graduate writing class. Do not take her class.
Lots of reading, ecspecially when doing novels. For your papers, go along with her opinions or you will get a bad grade. She is nice outside of class though.
her way or the highway. your interest or thoughts on specific subject matters are of no concern to her.
If you have a general knack for writing papers and interpreting the meaning of text as I am, I would recommend her class. If you are looking for someone to help you interpret text, I would not. If you interpret a poem in a different way than the author meant, she will mark you down. Papers are easy otherwise, though her grading is a bit random.

Her class was fairly interesting. It helps if you can read and comprehend the material well. My only complaint was that I had an A up until her midterm, which was 2 questions, neither of which were EVER discussed in class. Those 2 questions dropped my grade to a C until I said something. It helped that I often participated too.
She's alright, she just goes off a lot on things that don't matter and gets taken off course easily. But I like her hair...
Hard grader, very liberal and you must agree with her views. The books were hard to understand and she graded papers really hard. I would not recommend her.
she is a very hard grader she is not teaching 1101, she wants to analyze everything STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE!!!!!!!
dresses like a pirate
Harsh grader. She doesn't like to give out As, she will mark you one mere point away from getting the next letter grade. She's cold + makes jokes about the students. They should rename her class Literature Analysis because that's all you do. Explains everything you needed to know after the fact. Gives one week to write a 300 point paper.
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME ABOUT THIS TEACHER! She should not be allowed to teach I had to VERY SMALL errors on a memo and got docked two grades. She does not explain anything she is not clear on what she wants, we have to do a glossary she never said it would be graded and it had to be EXCATELY the same has hers. DONT TAKE HER CLASSES!!!!!!!!!
Does not specify what she want's.
By FAR the worst teacher I have ever had. She is very unclear about what she wants and grades as if you are in grad school majoring in tech writing. I was very excited to take this class, but she definatly ruined it!!!!! STAY VERY VERY FAR AWAY!!!!
I am not even sure where to begin, I was so excited for this class, and ended up having to drop it, after the teacher insulted me when I tried to ask for help and refused to help me on the assignment. I had many different individuals proof read my papers, say they were excellent I get a C from her for 1 or 2 mistakes, she is not fair with grading.
she should not be teaching at a community college if she wants to continue to teach and grade the way she is she should be teaching at a college and teaching grad students who want to be technical writers. I cant see how anyone can get a good grade, I find myself to be an excellent writing, I do it at my job daily and I cant get better than a C
Although I managed an A in her course, I still don't recommend her. It does help to stop by her office before class to show her your assignments and play nice. Her grading method seems random and small errors cost letter grades. Not very clear on what will be graded. Class periods were waste of time. One-third of the class ended up dropping.
wow! the worse teacher i have ever had. i have many things to say how bad she is. 1st day, the class was full, like 2or3 seats left. 1 week b4 class ended, about 8 left. had to drop out because shes so horrible. she expects every college student to write college quality paper. 2 mistakes on ur paper u get "F". her class sux i learned**** thru out
Class good but her grading is so tough.
Regardless of what everyone is saying i think she is a fabulous teacher. All that matters to her is that you worked hard and that your writing improved from what it was when you left the class. She grades you bad in the beginning just to scare you so that you may work harder. She designs her classes to sharpen your criticak thinking and ability to a
This was by far the worst teacher i have ever had in my life. You make one mistake and you get a letter grade off it is insane how she grades. She is never clear on how she wants you to write the papers, yet she expects you to do it her way and not the books way when she never gives any examples in class. half of the class dropped
Of course she's going to be tough on grammar and papers...it's a comp class!!! It doesn't matter what neg. comments I hear about her, she is one of my favs to this day!!
HORRIBLE GRADING MEATHODS, LEARN NOTHING, NOT HELPFUL WHEN IT COMES TO WRITING PAPERS, WHICH YOU DO A LOT OF.
Received 3-4 high B papers, and followed the objectives and formats, and she gave me a D on my final research paper. Made absolutely NO sense whatsoever. I'm asking for another instructor to grade it. I think she just had a bad day, and gave everyone a D. The total class average was a D. Standards are MUCH too high! Avoid this one! Bad news!
I'm taking Am. Lit online with her and it is HARD. There is a lot of work, and the grading is tough. I've never had less than a B in an English class before and now I'm barely passing. I definately wouldn't recommend taking her class online.
This teacher is RIDICULOUS, I have gotten A's in all other writing classes in college, and somehow I finished with a D! At fist I thought it was either a mistake or a bad joke, but it wasn't. She is by far the WORST teacher you could possibly find at this school. My entire class struggled, she grades extremely hard and I have NO RESPECT for her.
nit picky about papers.
I learned nothing about composition during this class. She was an extremely harsh grader even when she didn't tell us what she expected or how to do it, did not allow rewrites, and gave us less than a week's notice on important assignments.
A really great teacher to have. Fun and outgoing. Extremely helpful. Her class is really hard, but it is an honors class. Be prepared to work hard and have great writing skills because she grades tough.
It was an honors class, so I expected it to be harder, but the difficulty kept me learning new things. By the end of the year my writing had drastically improved. I really enjoyed the class, and teacher as well. WARNING: Show up on time and Do your assignments. Give it your best effort, and this class will yeild an A.
She is a tough teacher, but this is college. If you prove to her that you are making a strong effort (by asking questions, showing up to class, etc) she does help. To get a good grade you do have to work but that should be more than expected in a composition class. I learned alot about my writing from her.
I was a PSEO student when I took her class, meaning that I was a junior in high school (who NEVER made the honor roll), and still got B.. That means that the only ppl complaining are the ppl that didn't try. Although I didn't take much away from the class, it was easy enough to finish with a B. And this is coming from a high school junior people.
This was a pretty involved and taxing course. But college is like that. If you determine for yourself just how well you want to perform in the class you can make that happen. Just be prepared to do ALL of the reading, and don't overlook the importance of rewriting. You don't need to be the most achieving student, just show interest and improvement.
Time consuming and she can be difficult to connect with. Reading material are good, but your writing better be up to par with her. If I was a PSEO student and didn't have to worry about rent and bills on top of homework I would have more time to focus on it. This is coming from an adult people
WARNING. STAY AWAY. This teacher is not helpful. Grades hard. Irresponsible. And disrespectful. She doesn't care about her students, or your success at school. She failed an entire class on their midterm, and when I tried to talk to her she blew me off. I have never been so disrespected in my life. STAY AWAY. Worst "teacher" I've ever had.
I really enjoyed the material, and found it relatively easy to complete assignments. She is an English professor, so I expected to have to put more effort into all of the writing that I turned in. Be thoughtful, remember to revise, and you should be okay. This is definitely not a class to take if you are not willing to put in the extra effort.
Warning STAY AWAY. She failed nearly the entire class. Unfair grading. Cannot believe she is paid to suck so bad. The class started with 30, 15 dropped halfway through. I somehow pulled off a C. Only one other student passed the class. First C I have ever received in college.
This teacher was terrible, when I asked for clarity she told me that it was easy so I had to go find it myself, not to mention the fact that I ran all my papers by other english teachers and the grades she gave me were far less than what these teachers told me. Just stay away.
Lynette is one of those teachers who will push you your full potential. She expects common sense out of her students, but if you have any questions she's always there for her office hours. She was nothing but helpful for all of my papers and I look forward to taking one of her classes again.
For the final in our class she stated that everyone should post it on the forum rather than add the final paper as an attachment. She said we could accept attachments but downloads made her cranky and "you don't want someone cranky grading your essays". Really wish I would of taken someone else.
Professor Reini-Grandell expects students to participate in class and produce work that shows that they are learning. Her class has helped me to develop college level writing skills as she is knowledgeable about her subject. She is rather reserved, which may be off putting to some, but over the semester I found her to be very helpful.
Returned work extremely late, didn't give any reason for grades, grading system is punitive and does not help students learn. SHe doesn't offer any analysis of American Lit, Heavy focus on poetry (shocking, she's a poet). I would NEVER take another class from her.
She is a tough grader, but put the time in and you can do well. Ask her questions and she is willing to help.
She gave absolutely no reason for her grading of papers. She told me that "It wasn't what she was looking for". When asked what she's looking for, she replied, "Not that". She told me it wasn't college level writing. Funny, my composition teacher used my paper as an example of excellent college level writing. She was horrible. Avoid at all costs!
I took her on-line class. She expects 100% of her students. She is slower to grade, but it is a lot papers she is grading. On-line feedback is next to nothing, unless you contact her directly to discuss grades on papers or ask questions, then she was extremely helpful. Tough grader but show improvement and you will do well.
Has a very high standard of writing, eventhough this is first level english of college, she expects more. You need to write critical responses on other essays, when you probably need help yourself. Even if you write a whole essay, and miss something like page #'s you get a 0 on it. And did not help at all, it seems like u have to figure the prob
The feedback on your work is slow and not always helpful, she tries to record feedback on your writing in a 60 second audio clip. She posted two opportunities for extra credit less than 18 hours before the opportunity, since this is an online class, not everyone is on campus. I suggest taking this class from a different instructor and on campus.
It is not that difficult of a class but she expects you to do a lot of work. She is very slow to grade and does not provide feedback for why you got the grade you did. It is often unclear what she expects from students. I would recomend the class with a different teacher.
This was a challenging class with a heavy workload. Grades are very much a representation of how much effort is put into the class. Class time was primarily spent on student-led discussion, but participation is not mandatory. Teacher feedback was minimal, but I found that she was very helpful when consulted outside of class.
Dr. Reini-Grandell is knowledgeable on the subject of poetry though I felt the course was lacking in a key area. Shakespeare was discussed for one class period and that was it. That was unacceptable. Way too much time was spent on contemporary poetry, of which she obviously loves. If you are a lover of classic, romantic poetry, it's not here.
she is not clear at all. she makes the students read a lot of materials and write as many Drafts as she like and she gives no poits for. she is very bad grader and it she does not explain herself on how she grades. i would not recommend any one to take her class.
She gave no feedback to what you did during the course. I am a poor writer myself and I really had a hard to following the course content. She is definitely not a good teacher.
She rarely gives feedback and when she does it is very confusing. I am normally a straight A student and a very gifted writer but I ended up with a C. Do not take this class.
She assigned too many texts for the class that weren't even necessary and was very unclear about what she expected in essays. Also, she was overly strict on many aspects of the course. I would definitely not recommend this professor
I don't recommend her. Throughout the class we had 3 different text books to keep up with while reading a novel at the same time. Doesn't give much feed back on rough drafts. One time she basically told me what to write about (so i did) and she gave me a 30/50, mostly because she didn't agree with my opinion (which was hers).
Very tough grader. Expectations of freshman were way too high
Do not take a class with this professor if you are expecting someone knowledgeable, helpful, or inspiring. Her instructions are vague, her grading methods archaic, and her own knowledge sub-par. Ex: She didn't know what an Anti-Hero was. You will receive a poor grade if you don't conform to her opinion and express exuberant optimism. Stay away.
While this class didn't seem initially difficult, there was a problem with the way assignments were carried out. She assigned very few with high point values, and bound herself to a strict "no late assignments" policy that was NOT stated on her class syllabus. Was also very condescending during meetings about class performance.
She was very disrespectful to her online students. No encouragement, or direction. Normandale should not have her teaching freshman, many ended up leaving college. I would truly like to see how many students are encouraged to withdraw from her class. (not to mention how fee pass with a B or higher)
I tried my best to conform to what was asked from her, but that didn't help her condescending , presumptuous attitude. She only wants to read papers that oblige to her distorted views.
I really enjoyed taking Honors Freshman Comp with Lynette. The class was discussion based. Students are given required reading, assigned a short response paper weekly, and then a longer paper at the end of each unit. I found that students who did the reading, participated in discussion, and wrote their papers, really got their money's worth.
She gave me no credit on an essay because my opinion was different than hers. Yous just can't do that as a professor you just can not. She is the worse professor I have ever had and I would rather take an F than be in her class again.
Not a good professor at all. By the middle of the semester half the class had dropped and she was forced to reduce class to having each of us meet with her once a week individually for 15 minutes. In addition, graded papers on the basis of "if it's not what i want or how i would do it then it's wrong." Beyond pitiful.
HORRIBLE TEACHER. She's supposed to be head of the literary department. She is an extremely tough grader on papers, on rough drafts she gives little feedback and will give you full points for turning in the rough draft, but when you turn in the final draft she will mark down everything she can. Received 30100 on final after other teachers read it.
I took this class over the summer, online. The wording of the assignments were vague. One assignment instructed us to use internet or library sources, and to be sure to include opinions of others in paper. I lost points for using too many sources and also for not including my own opinion enough. Don't take online, would be better on campus.
STEER CLEAR OF HER. She's a terrible professor. She will grade your work, give you a terrible grade with no feedback on how to improve, if its not good to her you cant do anything about it. Passed the class BARELY with a D. The supplemental instructor left because she didn't believe the ways Reini taught. 75% of the class dropped by December.
Took Honors Freshman Comp and really enjoyed it! She had good feedback for me, and the readings were interesting, not just the same boring textbooks.
I'm a graduate student in teaching and I needed this class for credit. At first it was rough - her writing prompts weren't always clear. I had to ask for specific feedback all the time. Once I got used to her, it was okay but while the structure and pace and content was good, her execution of it could have been better.
Would not recommend taking anything with her. Insanely hard grader, forgets consistently what she has talked about in class and mixes it up with other classes she is teaching. Plenty of group work (be ready to do everything) Obsession with the Erdrich family is super uncomfortable too. Seriously, skip her if you can.
Lynette is a great teacher! Shes very sweet and a lenient grader. If you do the reading, you should be good. If you dont, youre screwed. Do the reading, everybody!
I took this class because I needed extra credits, and i thought an online poetry class would be interesting and relatively easy. I usually excel in english courses, but was forced to drop out of this one to avoid failing. I worked extremely hard, but couldn't manage to get above 70 on anything. I emailed her about my grade and she never replied.
Excellent teacher though kinda tough for some people, had an excellent time in course and had a better time than any other English class in the past
I took Comp1101 online... Big mistake. All the papers and books we read were about race & if you didn't tell her what she wanted to hear, you would not get a good grade. Majority of the homework for the course provided ZERO credit, but if you missed homework she would take points away like reverse extra credit. All in all, don't take her courses.
At first I really didn't like Lynette. However, as I began to interact with her more in my online class, I began to really appreciate her. Her feedback on papers is amazing, especially her feedback videos. My only complaint is that sometimes it took forever to get an email response from her. IMO not an ideal online professor but still great.
WORST PROFESSOR AT NORMANDALE! Was unclear about what she wanted and often contradicted herself. Told me I couldn't do research for my papers. Accused me of plagiarism (twice!) without any proof. Did not apologize when TurnItIn proved I hadn't plagiarized my papers. Condescending and rude. Constantly questioned my intelligence. I learned nothing.
Great professor. I took her fall 2019 and I loved her class. She walked the class through some serious topics and discussions through literature. If you need help with papers to go to her office hours or the tutoring center. Very cool and fun class. Seriously, proofread your essays.
Half of the assignments aren't even for credit, but if you don't do them she takes points away. She gives no feedback on your drafts. Extremely harsh grader, I wish I would have known this before taking this class.
She's a sweet teacher, gets a bit lost but that's natural. tough grader but show up and you'll be fine
Early on in the course, she told me that I was one of the top writers and that I should sign up for more writing classes. Her feedback and assignments were very unclear and she wouldnt help or answer questions. She ended up losing most of my assignments and when I showed them to her with her markings she refused to accept it, therefore I got a D.
Gave horrible feedback. Was not flexible at all with grading and did not give much guidance on assignments and was an unreasonable grader. Very opinionated. Steer clear if possible.
I took an online class, so I do not know how she is in real life. One thing I can say for sure that she is a really tough grader. If you care about your GPA beware. I passed the class only because of the tutors.
She seemed nice during the weekly class meetings, but after meeting with her one on one to go over my final papers she talked down to me in a very condescending tone the whole time and made me feel bad for making very minor mistakes. If she doesn't like your paper she'll give you a bad score, no matter how much effort and time you put into it.
oh my god is this class dry.
I took ENGC 1101 online. If you want to pass, you NEED to read the books, do the draft essays, go to class and individual meetings, and go to Normandale tutors for the papers. She is a tough grader so check the rubric and syllabus. Shell give you extensions if you ask for them and she usually accepts late work. She doesnt give any good feedback.
Pros: -Nice amount of extra credit offered. -Beyond direct content of the class, barely any homework is given. Cons: -Papers graded toughly. Make sure to read the class FAQ about writing them. Rubric is very general. -Poetry is vague and explanations are rarely given. You are tested on interpretation.
Too much reading. Very vague instructions & no feedback. Rude & condescending when talking one-on-one. She gives extensions for papers & homework. Hard to email her b/c she doesnt reply fast. Not willing to help in office hours or give extra help. DO NOT take her class. If you do, go to the English tutors a lot. Zooms are boring & we learn nothing
Very rude, gives no feedback, pass/fail on assignments. Doesnt reply to emails or like to give extra help on papers. Too much reading & high word counts. 2-hour zoom classes are boring & waste of time. Please take a different teacher who actually cares about you & your efforts in your work. Good extra credit.
Her feedback is VAGUE. Humiliates/ talks down to students during class. She is super condescending (we are people too, just younger)
She talks down to her students and doesn't believe they can do anything to improve. Accepts late work a week after it's due and doesn't care if you can't do it. The hour and a half zoom lecture is very boring but grades you on attendance and participation. Don't take this class if you need it for an elective and aren't interested in the subject.
I personally think she was a GREAT teacher. She was very helpful with papers and gave great feedback. If you show up to class and do the work, you will do great. Attendance is mandatory. No tests, only papers. There was plenty of time to write the papers. I would definitely take a class taught by her again.
Overall I liked Prof. Reini-Grandell. I took an online Children's & Young Adult Literature (ENGL2060) in the summer. It was 5 weeks so the reading was more intensive with the later weeks' reading being anywhere from 400-600 pages a week. I thought her selection was interesting. There were very few papers (2 with a 750 word min. and a 900 word min.)
Strongly do NOT recommend! The course structure is terrible, she doesn't give good feedback, and replies to emails late. She's not understanding at all, I wish I never took this course. I sent her my essay and she said she never received it and gave me an F. I retook this course with another teacher and easily got an A.
I won't recommend taking any class. She's rude and doesn't understand if you aren't well and does not bother to help students if they are stuck. Grades pass and fail and does not give extensions. Gives late or one word replies on emails.
She is so rude and disrespectful. She dissects things so much to poetry that doesn't make any sense for a freshman writing class. She is a very rough grader and expects everything to her ability. She does not do a good job on explaining the directions. Every single class period will be confusing. She will make it clear is she likes you or not.
All the negative reviews are true I wish I had seen them before I took this class. One of the most disorganized online classes I've ever taken missed the first discussion because it was impossible to find at first until I asked directly. She doesn't do weekly updates and if you email her she gives single-word responses from her phone.
I liked her class, I didn't really like the books she has us reading to write about except for talking to strangers. Grades easier on the discussions than she does on the papers and her feedback was a hit or miss but she is GREAT with in person questions. She wants people to engage and try, and if youre not she will hold you accountable. No tests!
Professor Grandell was a respectable person the few times I spoke to her outside class. However, her class was awful. Grading criteria for papers were often very unclear. The grading of papers was very harsh as well. Please take an English class with someone else. She also takes attendance and assigns grade points to attendance.
She did have some flaws like having mandatory attendance, grading you heavily on grammar mistakes that you are unable to find out what they even are, and assigning a lot of reading as well as a mini-essay most weeks. But overall if you don't strive to 100% all of the class work and readings it's not that hard of a class and she was a nice person.
She was very unapproachable, unprofessional, and was rude whenever I emailed her questions. Course is not set up in a clear way and can be difficult to understand what is due when. Mini essays due each week and four quizzes total with a final paper. Overall, the course is fine but chose a different professor.
Demands far too much for a 3 credit course. Daily attendance is part of the grade, plus 20% of grade is self-directed extracurriculars. Syllabus has incorrect info. Snobby grader and gives incredibly cryptic feedback. She said she's been a teacher for 30+ years but I could have believed this was her first year with how disorganized the course was.
She was very rude when responding to my emails and not flexible when retaking stuff or arguing a grade. On my final paper for the year, I was extremely close to passing, and she chose to fail me because I used the "wrong quotes" and decided to grade the rest of my work N/A. Overall, an extremely lazy and thoughtless teacher.
Not good at all
Undefined grading criteria that is never specified even after asking clarifying questions. she's dedicated to her writing however her skills & knowledge do not translate in a class room setting. seems to grade based off of her own style rather than format criteria despite the hard work you put into her class, she will grade you into oblivion.
Made the semester more difficult than it needed to be. Poor at grading and doesn't provide proper feedback
The teacher is nice and is helpful. The workload was intensive at times and the weekly essays got tedious after a while. The books we read were decent, not the kind of books you'd expect from a freshman course. They got boring fast. The grading is very nit-picky, often simple spelling or incorrect punctuation is flagged. Overall, not awful.
Professor Grandell's class is a challenge, but with effort and unstuck study for study prep, you can succeed. The grading is tough, but seeking help from tutors makes a big difference.
This prof acts like she's on a power trip. shes has a passive-aggressive attitude every day like she hates being here. Her feedback on papers was never help, and had papers due every week. took it with another teacher and passed easily with an A. It's possible to get an A in this class if you have no other choice, but avoid this teacher if you can.
Professor Reini-Grandell can be extremely unprofessional and rude if she decides that she doesn't like you. Attendance was mandatory, and she would send out passive aggressive emails if you skipped a lecture, because of this attitude she was difficult to communicate with. Avoid her if you can.
