the stats class i am in started out easy enough...but the ending of the semester brings out the devil of statistics
No Comments
This was an extreamly diffucult class that I was not looking forward to taking it, but even though it was very hard, professor Beck did an excellent job in teaching it. He was tough, but he truly wanted you to do well in his class.
Lynn Beck is a terrible teacher who cares about one thing, screwing students over.
Very Hard... goes very quickly and expects students to keep up. Easily aggrevated. Always reminding students how hard the class is. "Look at all the new empty seats" at beginning of every class.
The first half is not that bad, the second half might not be that bad but he's not very good at teaching that part. Rambles on about other cultures. Just be ready for the second half, get good grades early on. Talk to him, he'll like you then.
Terrible teacher, probably one of the worst that I have ever had, if you get him, change classes! Shows no compassion for students who try as hard as possible, but just need more time to learn it. Constantly rambling on about irrelevant issues. HORRIBLE
Terrible teacher, rambles on about irrelevant things and moves way too fast for you to keep up. All word problems all the time.Just give me a problem to work once in a while.Bad wording on the word problems too.
I was terrified of this class when i first started it. I attended the weekly help sessions which were very helpful and I ended up getting an A. (I hate math, by the way) Beck can be a hardass, but he's just doing it to make students work harder. I thought he overall was a nice guy.
He was a great instructor. It's just a hard class, and you can't let that be the base for the way you feel he does his job. He really does care that his students pass, only if they do what is necessary to pass...like, for instance, do the work!!
Lynn Beck is a good teacher. He is a little unclear teaching the second half of the semester, but he is always willing to help and their are tons of outside help opportunities. Just get good grades on all the quizzes and everything else will fall in place, I promise.
Very helpfull and fun
He also taught at McKendree Colleeg and I took him there and he just SUCKS a lot and doesnt care.
The first couple wks of class is scary... do the study guides, go to class, take the quizes and you will get a C.
beck was a decent teacher overall. very friendly. very understanding. the class was hard, but stats is supposed to be. if you have him, go in a talk to him a few times about the projects, he reallly takes that into consideration when grading you. tests are difficult, study hard, quizzes too
Lynn Beck was an incredibly accurate professor. His tests were outrageously difficult, but that is simply because the class is statistics! He will notice if you apply yourself and apply that to the grade you receive.I took this class 2 years ago and could still do the problems.I highly recommend.STUDY
He's a good teacher! He gives you all the material you will need to get an A in the class. The rest is up to you. You must put in the time. I took him a few semesters ago. I can also still do the problems. It's cool stuff.
I can't really give him a bad rating, because he does get the material across, but what a jerk. If you can tolerate him, and actually want to learn, you will do well. If you're taking the class just because you have to, get another prof.
Did a good job making sure students understood problems. Admittingly knows inputs personal opinions into class but is working on it. Needs to spend more time on regression, but overall a good teacher.
Beck is an awesome teacher.as long as you go to class and pay attention AND do the practice quizes he puts online you WILL get an A in his class.Furthermore, he is one of the most understanding professors I have ever had.Go into his office if you need help he will make sure you understand it
I took beck after I failed the class before. He is MUCH better than the prior teacher i had (Sullivan) and actually wants you to do well. He would do absolutely anything to go out of his way to help a student. I got a B after getting an F a few months earlier from Sullivan. I highly recommend him for this class over other teachers.

He was an alright teacher
he evil

People don't like him because he is to the point and will call you dumb, but thats because you are. As long as you show up to class, study, and listen to him you will be alright. He will give you projects(two) that are difficult, but he will help you very much with them if you do to his office.
Has quizzes every week which force you to learn the material. Puts up practice quizzes online. Updates grades online so you know exactly how you are doing in the class. The two projects are hard..unless you go to his office then he will tell you exactly what to do to get a 100. Very nice guy and very helpful, wants students to do well.
Horrible teacher
Do the hw and study the pre-quizes. Pay attention in class and participate. You will have no problem getting doing well in this class.
Great teacher. He is willing to help as long as you're willing to ask for it. Do the pre-quizzes, follow along in class, and ask questions and you'll do great. The projects are not that difficult to do.
HARD CLASS!! Willing to help, but doesnt explain anything very well.. AND WHO CARES ABOUT THE DAMN GEESE!!
people who have problems with him just have problems with the material. it's not beck's fault that you don't have a strong enough math background. anyone who has strong math skills should have no problem with the class. professor beck is a great teacher and more than willing to help you if you need it so stop complaining if you can't do math!
Everyone complaining that he does not help obviously never went to his office.I sat in his office for hours and he went over everything making sure I understood it. He also came in on two Saturdays going over the midterm with his students! This is a hard class that you need to dedicate time to, just because you didn't doesn't make him a bad teach
Great Teacher! Difficult, but fair. He will help you as much as you ask. Go to class. If you miss a class you will be lost. Ask questions. He may not explain something as clear as he should the first time. Do his practice quizzes. They are usually just like the real quiz. Study! I learned A LOT in this class. But you have to make an effort
Good teacher tries to use as many examples as possible. Attendance is a must to pass this course. 1-2 hours of study time for each class period is a Must. Good Teacher is really willing to work with you...take advantage of office hours!
He was very helpful the whole semester. Make sure you go to class and pay attention. I heard he was hard and alot of people had failed, but he was very clear and if you make an effort, you will do just fine.
He is probally my favorite teacher that I have taken at SIUE. I didnt really appreciate him until I got into classes later classes that are based on the information you learn in his. He really makes you learn the material but is extremely helpful if you go to his office.
You have to study to learn. Ask for help when you need it, but don't wait too long. Do your very best from the start, and you'll do fine. Be sure to keep your grades at at least a B level before the final. Take advantage of any extra efforts he gives.
The hardest "A" you'll ever earn at SIUE is in this class. It's not Lynn Beck's fault, though; he warns you on day 1 that 40% of the students who take this class fail out. My advice is to do ALL homework and pre-quizzes and work hard on the project. He loves students who try, and he's fun to chat with during office hours! (Ask him about Brazil!)
This class was one of the most difficult classes I have taken at SIUE! His class was kind of difficult to pay attention in because he liked to drift off in conversation that had nothing to do with the class. This class was very very demanding. At certain points in time we had a quiz, homework due, and a part of the project due. All in all, the
MS 251 is an extremely difficult class. He does not help make it easier. He never announced due dates for the project even though he emphasised the importance of it.He does like to get sidetracked to weird topics in class. Terrible teacher and I would do anything to get the other teacher!!!
I agree...it's the hardest A you'll ever earn but you'll be so satisfied when it's over. Very demanding class. Do every assignment and definitely go in periodically for your project. If he sees you in his office and knows you're working hard, he slaps a 100% on it right in front of your face. Awesome guy to get to know.
The class is difficult, but he does warn you. I do not have a problem with the class just him as the teacher. He is very unorganized leading to confusion on when things are due. He talks too much about his personal life!!!!!
i felt like the class really prepared me for more hard classes. he could not have been any more helpful. If you go to his offices and do his prequizzes, your golden. Also a great guy in general
This professor has a bad case of "Talks". Let me clarify that, the doesn't teach, he just talks to you and the rest of the students in calls. He loves to go off on random tangents about his personal life, and often leaves you confused when you do leave his class. Far and away the worst professor I've ever had.
Beck is an AMAZING teacher. One of the best that I have ever had. He is SO willing to help his students and really wants them to succeed. He doesn't like to deal with students who don't study or try and weeds them out. Stick with it and you should do OK. He does talk about personal stuff during lecture, but I think it is a nice break.
I loved him. Here is a guy who wants to help students learn. This class is hard with whoever you take it with, but he made it enjoyable. (Statistics fail rate=50%)I love his antidotes and stories. He always try to use real world examples. Very helpful especially after class. Holds group study sessions with those who need them. HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED!!
Beck has a bad reputation for nothing! If you go visit him, you will get an A. Attend SI sessions too, they help out. You will use this class in other classes as well, so it really helps to understand the material!
Beck is really a great guy! I agree that he has a very bad reputation for no reason. The class started with 100+ ppl and ended with 20 of us. IT'S an EXTREMELY HARD class. He is very willing to help. GO TO HIS OFFICE!! And you will be fine. I thought I was doomed and went to his office and managed a B in the class.
Beck is one of the best statistics teachers. The people who give him a bad review do not put time in the material or do not show up for class. The quizes prepare you for the tests. Also, if you go to his office he is more than willing to help you. ATTEND STUDY SESSIONS. The project is easy if you turn it in a few times and he will give you a 100%.
Mr. Beck is one of the weirdest people I have ever met but he isn't very hard. As long as you do well on your quizzes from the very beginning you will do well. Make sure you attend class or you will be very far behind. He doesn't teach ANYTHING out of the textbook!
He was really hard. You have to go to his office everyday to get a decent grade. He was all over the place when it came to notes and he skipped helpful information while teaching. SI doen't help either. Take it at a different school since he is currently the only teacher teaching stats.
Pro. Beck is a very nice guy, he will help you if you go to his office, but this is very hard class, and you will have lots of work every week.
Terrible teacher, Almost every test average was an F for the class. He does not care if you fail or not. His tests are extremely difficult. No matter how much you study on Blackboard, you will more than likely fail. More than half of my class dropped. Take this at a community college, it will be much easier.
Worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. 29 of 48 dropped my class. The final exam average was less than a 60% for the people who did not drop. I studied with what he provided me and he would tell us on the day of the quizzes that he made a large quantity of mistakes on the study guides therefore I failed almost half of them. Dont take him!
He is hard!! If you want to pass go to his office all the time and suck up...if not...good luck! My advice is take it at a different school and have it transferred.
Worst teacher, this guy is a joke. Instead of teaching he talks about his male order bride every day.
Mr. Beck's class is very time consuming but you will learn a lot. Go to his office for help and to receive a better grade. Most likely half of the people will drop this class. Nice guy. A lot of HW and studying. Good luck
Always go to class if you don't you WILL NOT pass. Go to his office hours he will help you and you will get your grade. Study for all his test and quizzes. He has a very bad rep around SIUE and it is because kids want him to hand them a grade. Not as bad as made out to be. Take it you will learn the material.
The class is definatly hard but not impossible. Go to class and also GO TO HIS OFFICE hours to ask questions on memos and homeworks. Also, SI is extremely helpful to go to those to prepare for quizzes/test. He tries to make the class really hard at the beginning so people drop it. Just stick with it till the end.
Prof. Beck is a great teacher!! The course is somewhat difficult but he (the professor) is not. He is very helpful during office hours. You may also find the SI (supplemental instruction) sessions helpful.
Hardheaded/hopeless instructor, Helpfulness = 0. Hour long lines for office hours (must visit to pass.) Classes are nearly pointless(uncomprehendable) SI sessions hardly help. Class quiz avg. = 40%. "All focus must be on MS 251", forget your other classes. Not recommended, turn around, get out, take with someone else or somewhere else...seriously.
you learn more about farming and his russian wife than you do about stats. he spends half the class talking about himself. he says you have to put in 16 hours a week on his class to pass. so if you have a job or family you have no chance to pass the class (which he admitted himself on the first day of class)
Easy to fall behind, impossible to catch up!
This class was TERRIBLE, I have never had such a hard class. I got 100's on all my homework, but the tests were so hard I couldn't get a good grade. He mixes questions up from different chapters so it's extremely easy to become confused on the tests.
Anyone who complains about Prof. Beck obviously didn't do enough work. If you apply yourself and actually try you can get an A or B. He's very helpful outside of class and notices when you're putting your best foot forward. He's a good professor but gets a bad rap because he makes students earn their grade, which is how all professors should be.
I spent about 24 hours studying and doing homework each week. 100 pt quizes and 100 pt homeworks EVERY week. If you don't have time to suck up in office hours you won't pass. Don't take his class. He need's to change his methods or be fired. Pure favoritism at its worst!
Second time taking the class - and I've got so much more out of it. You NEED to go to his office. Her certainly picks favorites but don't complain if you don't go. Got a D last time and A this time. Much better second time around. Learn what he wants and give it to him. Not that bad once you learnt he hard way.
This is a tough class but he is a nice guy. Go to his office hours he is very helpful. Get good grades on the homework and you have to study for his quizes. You don't have any tests, only a midterm, final, and a quiz every week. Study and you should do well in the class.
I'm a former student of the Beck, and I love to check in periodically to see how many people bag on his methods. Truth be told, he's really fair, and there is no favoritism. He simply wants students who care enough to try. Show up with a good attitude and no gripe, put your head down and work. If you do that A, B, or C, no problem. Good Luck!
You have to work at it. He makes you learn the stuff whether you want to or not. It can get really confusing in class lectures but that is what he wants, so you have to go back home and work it out yourself. Nice guy if you show you work hard in the class. Study for weekly quizzes and homework! Work hard and get it done!
BY FAR THE HARDEST TEACHER I EVER HAD!!! Plan on spending 10 hours on one single homework assignment.Sometimes hell be lazy and give you an A if you go to his office though. I was passing the class until the final. 70% of the class got below a 40% on it.VERY ****!If youre stuck with him suck up as much as possible or read his book about ducks.
Statistics is a historically difficult class. It basically determines if you are Business worthy. The Beck at first is intimidating, but as half the class drops the criteria gets easier. I spent a lot of time on this course but managed a C first time. Learn to ask questions and for examples. The Beck will help.
First day of class he tells you that 60% will fail. He is very boring so be prepared to consume a lot of energy drinks. Homework is very easy, but not worth much against the weekly quizzes and tests. Sure he is helpful, but good luck getting time with him in his office, it's always full. If you don't understand something he basically laughs at you.
He is a cynical and arrogant professor. He takes pride and enjoys failing over half the class. He is not very helpful or kind. I would not take this class with him I would take it with someone else.
Stats is the "weed out class" of any decent School of Business. You will hate your stats professor anywhere you go. First half of the semester, Beck will make you so angry and confused. Study hard to make it through. After the midterm he will ease- up and you can enjoy the essence that is Mr. Beck. Interesting man. I'd take him again.
Professor Beck is an interesting man. He tries to intimidate people the first week of class so they will hopefully drop. People complain about his homework but if you take it too him he will tell you what you need to get an A. His midterm and final exams are hard but passable. As far as quizzes just study and hope he doesnt ask something random.
This man knows his stuff. Unfortunately, he has no skill in passing it on to others. He enjoys the fact that over half the class will ultimately fail, insisting that it's because the class is demanding and not that he cannot teach.
Beck as a teacher is amazing. People give him a bad rep because the class is HARD. One of the most difficult classes you will take in the business school. Beck is a great instructor and offers help any chance he can. You have to study DAILY to understand the material but he provides excellent examples. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS!
I took this class twice. First time I never went to his office and tried to learn the work on my own which landed me a D. Second time I went to his office every week, learned his way of doing things and went to SI before every quiz/test and got an A. Do the homework exactly the way he wants it, go to his office beforehand and you'll be fine.
Beck is, as many say, interesting. He thinks he is Gods gift to stats and its his way or no way. He is very knowledgeable and knows what he is talking about but he makes the course a lot more difficult than it should be. Study, do homework as he wants it done and you will be fine.
Beck is probably my favorite teacher by far in college. His class that I'm in is very demanding, but if your up for the challenge I would suggest you take him. He's a great teacher and keeps his class interesting. I feel like he has changed my perspective on school, for the better that is.
VERY challenging class, but if you study and get help when needed it is a breese. Just have to put in the time and effort.
Kind out there?? He is not clear on what to study. You can have a quiz (you have one ever week) that probably has random stat material on it. You have to pay attention in this class!!!!! Go to his office hours and be respectful. It will pay off.
Not an unreasonable teacher, just likes things done his way. He will give a lot of help on the homework assignments if you visit his office before they are due. Also, the SI sessions are EXTREMELY helpful.
Typically, I am an A student. This was the best B I could have asked for. I studied for hours every week and still had just average quiz and test scores. I was not a fan of Mr. Beck at first, but by the end of the course I was not as scared of him as I was on the first day of class. Good luck to anyone taking his class.
Beck is a great professor, but you will not pass his class if you don't do things exactly how he wants them done. He continuously puts material that the class does poorly on on multiple quizzes, so if you have trouble with something the rest of the class probably did too and you will see it on future quizzes. Go to his office hours and go to SI!!!!
Great teacher! However he wants things done his way. He gives you all the study material needed to pass the test. You have to read it and pay attention. He does not go into detail in his lectures, because of this package of notes that he types up himself. Attend class, read notes and attend SI. You will be fine. Also keep a good attitude.
Good teacher. He definitely knows how he wants things done. As long as you pay attention and do things as he says, you should be fine. Make sure you go to class. Missing one class period will definitely make you fall behind.
If you want to get a high grade in this class I would recommend attending as many SI sessions as possible. He is a good teacher but gives no one a free pass in this class. I you want an A, you definitely have to earn it. The one negative thing is that he is hard to approach about questions. If you want to actually know the material, take Beck.
This class is very difficult. I failed it the first time and hated him for it but the second time I took it I passed and have the most respect for him now. He is a little weird and repeats the same stories every semester but you learn a lot and he makes sure you learn it. Highly recommend having him as a teacher!
Beck seems to be quite infamous around SIUE. Don't worry. As long as you come to class with a positive attitude, participate, and go to his office hours you should do fine. Beck is quite the character and I appreciated his perspective on life.
Mr. Beck is an excellent teacher and knows what he is doing, but this was a very hard class for me. He's compassionate about his students and wants them to succeed you just have to go talk to him. And follow the directions to the T on hw
Avoid if at all possible. He views himself as the gatekeeper to to Business Department and seems to love the feeling of power over his students. The class is less about learning stats and more about learning how to please him. I should have been warned when he started bragging about the class failure rate. Took my C and ran.
I took this class last year with Beck. He isn't as difficult as everyone makes him seem. If you go ask him for help and study for your quizzes you will be fine. Midterm is extremely hard but Final was pretty easy. Kind of unclear how he wants hw but like I said if you go to his office and ask him he will help. GREAT STORIES TOO. He is intimidating
SI lectures are key to passing this class! Most weeks I had no idea what Beck was going over in class but was able to put it all togather in SI. Make sure you attend SI at least twice a week and take all your homework assignments to his office hours so he can check them prior to turning them in. This class requires a lot of time and effort
This was a difficult class that required a lot of studying. Everything that is on the quizzes and tests is discussed in class. He'd even tell you to put a star next to certain bits in the notes because they'd "be on the test". I think this guy gets a bad rap for teaching a hard class that requires more effort than most are willing to exert.
Be prepared to study! This professor is no joke! I was afraid of him at first. But I have nothing but respect for him. He does know his stuff and if you come to class unprepared, good luck, I wouldn't want to take this class twice. Super nice guy when you get to know him.
Beck is very cocky and rude. His tricky quizzes and lack of clarity in what he wants make the class considerable more difficult than what it needs to be. He will make insulting remarks about his students daily, I hated going to class. Those who said he is easy are either his pets or taught themselves, I am an A student and struggled just to pass.
Worst teacher I've ever had. Every assignment is a guessing game and you will almost always be wrong. He is a lazy, unorganized professor who spends most of class fighting with the computer. Put off stats as long as you can and hope he retires.
SI Session's are key. You must attend them every week. I never understood lecture, but I went to be respectful. I learned everything I needed to know for the quizzes at SI. He was intimidating at first, but I was told to go to his office hours and just get to know him. So I did. Very nice guy if you take the time and respect him.
The first day of class I thought I would have to drop it. He gave a very scary speech that cut the class in half. stick through it he is really not bad. I went to every SI secession right before his class and it was very helpful. I also brought all of my homework assignments to his office which helped alot. si is the key leave the hour before open.
I had professor Beck for Microeconomics. He was horrible. If you know nothing about economics, DO NOT TAKE HIM. In order to pass any of his quizzes, you have to read EVERYTHING in the text book. Paying attention in class will get you nowhere.
Did not teach much in class other than reading what was on his powerpoint. Pretty much had to teach yourself from the book to do well in the class.
Lectures are boring and really don't help anything. You pretty much had to read the textbook to get a decent grade. Don't take him!
He will try to scare you off. I thought I was going to have to drop the class at first, but I ended up loving it. You only get as much out of the class as you put in. Sit in the front and let him get to know you. He will grade you easier if he knows who you are. Go to the SI Sessions, it makes the class easier and you will understand it better.
The class my seem overwhelming at first but if you just go to SI and go to his office to have him check your homework you are guaranteed at least a C, I am not great at statistics and ended up with a B in the class.
One of the BEST teachers in the school of business!!! The material itself is difficult and time consuming so you definitely have to make time to study and understand the assignments and go over your notes. If you frequent his office hours, ask questions during class, and go to study sessions w/the TA you do GREAT!!
Easily the hardest class I have ever taken. He reads from a PowerPoint. We had a weekly quizzes and an exam. That was it. He would tell you to focus and study on one thing and the quiz would be over something completely different. i highly recommend avoiding at all costs. He's very wishy-washy.
Worst teacher I've had. The way he teaches pisses me off. He tires to teach you why you would use this in life, but the test are the math problems. Lectures don't help the weekly quizzes. SI teaches me more in 50 min than Beck does in four hours. He acts like he doesn't want to teach. Jumps around a lot. Confusing. His off topic stories are funny.
Beck is one of my favorite teachers at SIUE. Is available to help his students; get to know him. This class is not really difficult, it just requires a bunch of time. SI sessions really help. Beck expects everything a certain way, but he will tell you what way. He will go over your hw before it's due. RECOMMEND him! Wish he taught more classes!
if you want to get a good grade, you HAAAAVVEEE to come to class. and i mean every class. We have weekly quizzes on Tuesdays, and they are all short answer. He doesn't believe in multiple choice and he is very specific about the word choices you use in your answers.
If you don't word your answer almost perfectly on the test, you will most likely get point taken off & his grading scale makes no sense whatsoever. One one part question might be worth 25 pts while the next is a 4 parter worth only 5 & has more difficult material. Doesn't care at all & his beard is realistically made out of crushed student dreams
Beck is very passionate about what he teaches, however is not always great at explaining it. He will tell you to study for one thing on a quiz and then the questions are completely different. Notes are taken from a Powerpoint, the book is not used nor does it help. You MUST study for quizzes & attend class to get passing grade.
On quizzes and tests if any part of the problem is wrong, the whole thing is. Dr. Beck is very particular with answers. If things are not worded the way he likes, math done not using the methods he likes, or even if the lines on graphs are, "too thick" as he considers them, "distracting". Quizzes with a class average of 31-57% are common.
I agree with all the negative comments to an extent. I did terribly the first 3 weeks. HARD grader. Went to his office expecting nothing but he helped me through all of my quizzes and is actually a nice guy. Gave me some points back for effort. DO NOT SHOW UP LATESKIPTEXTTALK. I don't recommend him but it's ok if you have to take him.
Absolute joke of a teacher. Do not take him... He is always condescending to his students. Very tough grader.... Will not round up from 69.5 to a 70.0 if your final grade lingers. Pointless to go to class, very scattered and hard to follow. Anyone who says Beck is easy is lying. He is by the far worst I've ever had as a teacher. Please avoid him...
Professor Beck knows the material well and is well educated. However, he is not a good facilitator of the subject matter to his students. If you truly want to learn, understand, and master this subject to build a solid foundation for further classes, I would not recommend him.
He's a tough grader; I have never wanted to rage-quit a class so much in my life. But hang in there. Go to him for help! He does not want to fail you, no matter what it seems like. The more he knows you, the more he'll like you. Also, go to the SI sessions if math isn't your strong suit. He's a very interesting individual.
