gorgeous, sexy, challenging, witty
A little intimidating, but only because she's loud.
She is extremely interesting- very extremem liberal views, those not in agreement will have a TOUGH time in her class- beware
A very excellent teacher who will help you improve your writing skills tremendously. The materials covered will help you with almost all your undergrad classes.
passionate for literature Take any of her classes!
She was purposely vague and contradicted herself, and all the class did was argue with eachother and her. She barely gave any good grades on tests and papers. The tests were impossible. They were mult. choice with about 90 diff. possibilities for answers.
So good I had to take her not once, not twice but thrice. See you next semester Dr. Pez!
If you disagree with anything she says in group discussion you better have a great explanation. She likes to cross examine and catch you in contradictions you make. Makes you feel kind of stupid. Lots of In Class Writings. GO TO CLASS!
she's funny, sarcastic, and upbeat...I liked her
She is a good teacher.
awful person... is very two faced . Definetly not cute in anyway

Her lectures are in depth and she really wants the students to learn. Writing assign is 2 essays. This class requires a lot of reading and it is fast paced. If you cannot keep up it can be a problem. She does give pop quizzes if no one can respond to q's.
She gives very short quizzes that cover way too much material which causes confusion. On papers VERY particular w/ grading. Does not accept excuses no matter what. Puts WAY too much emphasis on attendance!!!

Does lectures on powerpoint! BORING!! Lots of reading (of course, we are English Majors:). She is not very intelligent. Kept catching her in mistakes. Overall, not recommended! Take Dr. Angley!
Decent teacher, but sometimes seems biased against male students. Not a lot, and actually only very slightly, but it does seem noticeable.
Enjoys making students look unintelligent, attempts to twist every discussion to meet her point of view.....and hasn't read several of the classics. I believe she didn't even major in literature, or English of any sort, as an undergrad.
This teacher will make you feel stupid. You will not learn anything but the pride she takes in her own writing. Very difficult person and very ****.
Is a bad teacher and a mean person
Intelligent, interesting & personable. An expert of slave narratives. AML 3613 requires lots of reading; if you keep up with it you’ll be fine. Two essays, four quizzes, in-class writings, a presentation, a mid-term & a final define your grade. One of
A very intelligent professor who does make you work, but anyone interested in an easy ride has no business at a major University.
If you are willing to work hard, Dr. Casmier-Paz will make it worth your effort. She is full of knowlege and hilarious--a perfect combination for a professor.

Very funny and knows her stuff. Wouldnt recommend her if you plan on having an easy ride. Extremely intelligent
True, intelligent and interesting. Clear, not so much. Grades seem more subjective then they already are naturally when taking her class.
INTELLIGNET, INFORMATIVE, FUN and FUNNY to talk to on subjects outside class. FAIR grader. Teaches PRACTICAL writing skills (not just that "What I did over the summer" junk). CHALLENGING ENOUGH, but NOT A CLASS YOU SHOULD LOSE ANY SLEEP OVER if you're on top of things.
She's a very intelligent teacher, but this English class is harder than all the other honors ones. You learn more histroy than English. Not fun. Almost guaranteed a B, unless you THINK your a good writer. She never accepts your response. It's only her opinion or nobody elses. NOT AN EASY CLASS
Dr. Casmier-Paz is one fo the best professors in the English department. She is knowledgable, personable, and reasonable. She has high standards for her students, as any good university professor should, and she works hard to relate the material in her courses to the students.
her humor is a relief and she challenges her students to push themselves intellectually. you can't "b.s." any work for her. she will teach you how to write good papers and engage theory. a philosopher
Difficult class! You do learn alot about research writing. You would never get from the "Core Essays" of other classes. A fun and exciting person to talk to outside of class. Always there to help.
Extraordinary professor. It pains me to see so many passionate educators recieve lukewarm responses from students. Her classes are compelling and require only the most basic investment of time and intellect to pass. Too many forget that college is about LEARNING, not about being handed good grade
not worth the time or effort. She think her wittiness is on display and the only important thing in class
Notice that the last commentator didn't get the class section correct, which shows how much of a moron that person must be. Dr. Casmier-Paz is one of the best teachers at UCF - END OF STORY>
She did not teach anything. We were assigned chapters from the book to read then assignments to test if we were able to learn the material on our own. Her comments were demeaning and she gave assignments on chapter we were not supposed to have read yet. Worst teacher I've had so far.
I took an online course for Summer A. Dr. Casmier-Paz gives clear directions on assignments. Essays aren't very difficult if you actually put any effort into them. Discussions were interesting. I actually dropped out of Prof. Smith's ENG3014 class at the last minute just to be in Dr. C-P's class instead (she also uses a better text, in my opinion)
Dr. Casmier is a wonderful professor. She tries her hardest to make sure that everyone in the class understands her assignments. she always go over her short essays or reading assignments. If you attend class and get on her good side you will think she's pretty cool as a professor and a parent.
Pretty decent professor. Very good at explaining what's expected in college writing. Just don't go in thinking you know everything about writing, becasue college writing is nothing like high school. As long as you do more that warm a seat (ask questions! talk to her!) you're sure to get a passing grade, and with some effort, an A is very possible.
She is Funny<in her own kind of way> Her class is very interesting if you like to analyze and do some deep thinking about topics which hit close to home. One day she started rapping in class.HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!
Amazing prof. One of the smartest and funniest people i have talked to. She has a knack for making difficult concepts [ie. deconstruction] easily understandible. She also makes sure that no one falls behind. It is hard to get an A though. A wonderful and entertaining prof, i only wish she taught more classes.
She thinks she is the smartest person alive, she is very cocky and unbearably aragent. Peoplpe teached because they cant do, which she displays very well. If you want be over work and to your hardest for a c take this class. She never gives out A's unless you kiss her As#.
For an english professor, she sure does have an affinity for history. Expect another history class out of this one. Also, don't expect to be able to slack off - she will pick you out on it and spit you out. Also not afraid to speak her mind, nor make jabs at religion or anything that she wants for that matter. Liberal at heart.
Ok all of you haters! You are just intimidated by her brilliance. Do your work and use your brain and you will earn (yes, earn) an A.
Maybe it's just me, but it seems like everyone who hates Dr. C-P has writing problems (see the error-filled writings below). There's gotta be a correlation: If you write poorly, you won't like your writing teacher. End of story. Dr. C-P is brilliant, funny and helpful. But if you write poorly, be prepared to work hard to get better.
Professor Casmier-Paz is perhaps the best professor i've had at UCF so far. She is an extreamly intelligent person, amusing, her lectures are clear, and she's not afraid to make fun of a student or two. I could seriously sit there and listen to her lecture all day. She is simply amazing. But if youre not willing to read, dont take the class.
she is in my top 3 best teachers in UCF, shes clear, shes helpful, shes smart, and she knows more than most people could imagine about slave history, she is truly amazing
Fantastic! Really. I won't waste your time repeating other :) ratings!
Very intelligent, I learned a lot in her class. However, she is not interested in students who disagree with her views. Be aware, she likes to tell students ahead of time that there will be no quiz and then proceeds to give one.
If you're in college to learn, take this professor. She has amazing wit, eloquence, and subtle humor in her lectures (if you're paying attention enough to catch it). She knows her material very well, and how to teach it interestingly. But if you're in college for a quick brainless A+, then she may prove to be too difficult/stressful for you.
AMAZING professor! Extremely intelligent, funny, nice, and is willing to help with anything in her class and beyond.
Took this class online. At the very end, she e-mailed out the grade person breakdown. She only gave one person in the whole class an A. The assignments are not that difficult, but her grading is kind of arbitrary, as if she was adhering to one of those bell curves or something. The final was ridiculous. I still don't know how I did so bad.
horrible!!!! he is arrogant and mean, the class is all about what she knows and how she wants to flaunt it. She make every student know that she is better then you. If you want to do alot of hard work for nothing take this class, she never gives out As she told us in the begining of the semester, so good luck trying.
She may be OK in class, but is terrible as an online professor. Rude, and arrogant. Unhelpful and not willing to respond to e-mails or bulleting posts timely. EXTREMELY disorganized. We didn't get a syllabus until 2 wks left and it was FULL of errors. Numerous discrepancies in due dates and assignment instructions. STAY AWAY FROM HER ONLINE!
This professor was great. She was very helpful if you went up and asked her questions about your paper. She was also very funny in her lectures. Although she grades extremely hard, she still is a great professor for how she teaches and what you will learn.
Took her for Narratives of Slavery...loved the class. She really expanded my mind and was really into the material and willing to listen to student opinions.
I loved her right up until the end, when I realized exactly how rude and arrogant she is. Whether or not you'll love or hate her depends on if you encounter that side of her. Weekly discussions were 100-250 words, with our essays being 400-500 words.
She is extremely opionated and has to be right about everything, but makes you think about what you say. Difficult grader. No tests, but in class writings and core papers. If you dont handle confrontation and being put on the spot well, than you might want to reconsider. Read the book and join in the lectures and you might just have a chance :)
Professor Casmier-Paz is one of the best professors I've had during my time at UCF. She is witty and very passionate about literature. The class is not at all easy, and she moves very quickly through the material, but she definitely makes the material enjoyable. I'm looking into taking more courses with her in the future.
She is a wonderful professor.
She is a fascinating teacher. Her grading his tough. This was the only class that I did not ever miss. She moves through the material quickly, but her notes are well written and easy to understand. I recommend taking her. It will be challenging, but worth it.
Hard teacher who expects a lot and doesn't communicate her ideas clearly. You will write a lot so if you like to be unclear on topics and judged because of it then this is for you.
Nice teacher, though now always clear about what she wants for her assignments. She tends to be as vague as humanly possible when assigning essays. But, she is great when discussing the reading snd movies in class. If you like to write a lot, then take her, if not I suggest getting another teacher.
Really cool teacher. Papers are somewhat difficult to write but they are not that bad. The actual class is really interesting. In class writings require you to read the book. The class is much like a history class and the papers are all about history. I hate history but I didn't mind the class that much.
I genuinely learned nothing from her. She seemed to hate teaching the subject, and even said to us that she was being paid by us to haze us. Her grading was odd, and she never fully explained why she gave certain grades. Overall, not a good teacher- avoid at all costs. (Even Honors, which was just as bad for me as she was for regular students...).
Great teacher, really enjoys literature & knows her stuff. One of the best teachers I've had. She goes through a lot of material but her notes are very clear and HW (which is quite a bit) does reflect & help you understand what's going on in class. Def. recommend but expect to work.
not bad, I probably wouldn't take her again. can be nit-picky about grading, she seems to enjoy finding any possible reason for docking points. She always finds a reason, though, and you can't argue against it-- it won't get you anywhere. She decides when she wants to read/reply to emails, and her web instructions for online classes are confusing
Well, I would have to say that she needs to take some time off of work. I heard really great things from friends about her classes and I decided to take her last semester, it ended up being the worse class I had. She didn't teach at all, she assigned projects for students to do but she never approved of any of them. Avoid her at all costs!!!
Dr. CP is one of the best professors I've ever had. She cares about what she teaches. She is funny and makes class bearable. I can't wait to take more of her classes.
She was a good teacher and definitely had a passion for the subject. She has a sense of humor which makes class better; I learned a lot. She does have a tendency to dismiss some students' ideas and if you're wrong, be prepared to get made fun of a bit. She tells it how it is with no sugar coating.
Took her online course. Definitely loves her subject of study. However, her online instructions are often not exact, and she will grade you off if you don't get them how she wants. Grades quickly, and provides a lot of insight. Good professor, but get clarification on any instructions you might have questions on.
Assignments did little to help parse her long lectures, and any question will be fielded and discarded with holier-than thou semantics.
Really dry, boring, but not too hard. Just a lot of work you won't want to do. You have to read Huck Finn, which is good if you know it well, bad for everyone else. Not sure why we're reading that in College...
The very definition of a de-motivator, Dr. CP is rude and demeaning to students who don't kiss her rear-end. Way too much reading crammed into a short semester...we barely skim the surface of the text, and rely on student presentations to fill in the gaps (students are not experts!). The quizzes are absurdly difficult, and most cheat on them anyway
Dr. Casmier-Paz is a tough teacher. That being said, I learned a lot. The student presentations are useless, but her lectures are engaging and interesting. Don't take her class if you're looking for an easy A, you won't find one here.
She is one of the smartest, most interesting teachers I have had so far at UCF. That being said, she is horrible when it comes to online grading. She made numerous errors that cost me an A. I never missed a class and I ended up with an 89.46 and she gave me a B, stopping me from getting a 4.0. She cares more about her research than her students.
I'm in a mixed mode class with her and she took of 10% of my grade for an assignment because I went over the word limit by 6 words. She is nit-picky with her grading. In person, she is interesting but only scratches the surface of the material you have to learn.
She is very informed on the material, which is why she should be teaching the class. Instead, she has the class perform student presentations, and even if they deserve an A, are never up to her "standards". Her jokes seemed funny till she embarrassed me in front of everyone. It was rude and insulting. I'm in college and an adult, treat me as such.
Dr. Casmier-Paz is one of the smartest teachers I've had, she is extremely knowledgable on the subject. She is a very harsh grader & is extremely nit-picky about her guidelines,so make sure to follow them exactly. Her lectures are incredibly interesting & her jokes are hilarious, though sometimes she takes them too far & hurts the student's feelings.
Her lectures are extremely interesting yet she is very unclear when giving directions about what she wants on assignments. She's extremely intelligent and will definitely make sure you know. She can be very condescending. She only skims above the surface of what you need to know/do for assignments/projects/essays.
I've never had a professor be so obnoxiously pompous and disrespectful of her students. Take this class if you want to learn about slaves and Native Americans exclusively. She doesn't teach, makes everyone do presentations which are worthless. Gives too many works to read in the time you have. Worst professor I've ever had.
I think people just go on here to bash teachers. It's a crazy concept, but she actually makes you do work and learn in her class. She does joke with students but that's only when someone says something ridiculously dumb like that Frederick Douglass was from Michigan. If you bring yourself to the next level, it will not go unnoticed in her class.
Class material was extremely confusing but she made it clearer for students. She took out some syllabus assignments if she felt they were useless. Funny, interesting, very helpful and a great teacher! I recommend her highly.
At first, I would have said that Dr. C-P was great. She was funny and obviously very intelligent. Then I realized just how unhelpful and demeaning she really is. I went to her concerned about my grade and all I got was "you're wrong, this is inaccurate." SO UNHELPFUL! NEVER take her. I made that mistake and I'm regretting it with all my heart.
ONLINE.Dr. C-P is one of the most understanding and considerate professors I have ever had.If you're disabled, she accommodates. If you're confused, she willingly clarifies. The course was a bunch of reading, with 2 essays and several 200-250 word responses. But her critiques and grading were clear and very fair. I plan to take her a lot more.
I took this class online and I loved it. Dr. C-P made me read and think about many things I may not have if I had not taken this class. The workload is kind of heavy but the Professor is so helpful and grades very fairly. A very doable class considering it is 3000 level.
Anyone that says they don't like Dr.C-P plainly embraces ignorance. She goes out of her way to accommodate her students so if you don't do well in your class your simply not trying hard enough.
I'm not quite sure how this lady managed to earn her doctorate. When I asked why I got a particular question wrong on a quiz, her answer was "I can't give you the answer to the quiz because some of the same questions re-appear on the mid-term." Really? Apparently, I'm supposed to get the same question wrong twice. How does this make sense?
Seriously unorganized. I dropped the online class because she was unorganized and never responded to questions posted in discussions or emails. Do NOT take this professor if you like to know what is expected of you and you have time restraints due to a life outside of class.
She is a very tough grader. It is very hard to get an A on anything. Reading is a must, and make sure you have all required textbooks. Don't take the tests late at night either. Dr. CP will respond to emails promptly and she grades relatively quick. If you are worried about anything you can talk to her. It is not an easy class.
Tough teacher but pretty easy content. You get 2 attempts on all quizzes but discussions are only 200 words and points are taken off for going over. She's a tough grader but gives lots of feedback. IMPORTANT: In the online class, she removes the modules after each week so be sure to save the PP presentations and notes, you'll need them later
If you want to challenge yourself she is the professor to do it. You need to not only read the assignments but you must be able to comprehend the meaning and apply the theory correctly. She is a great instructor that will work with you if you don't understand something, but make no mistake you will have to work for your grade! I give her an A-!
This professor is BRILLIANT! Try to take Theories and Tech in person, if you can. You will learn so much. Yes, she is hard but that is what we pay for-to become better students. I am learning so much from her
She is one of those rare people who opens her mouth and you immediately realize that she's just...brilliant. Lectures are a privilege: she starts with a PP but her tangents are fascinating and insightful. Her grading is tough but fair. She expects you to really understand the material so that you can wield it in the future. Very strict word counts!
Had this online course with Lynn Casmier-Paz in Spring of 2012. It was awful. The assignments made little to no sense, especially the discussion postings. I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt and assume her online coursework is not up to par with her lectures. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE. It is the only class I have ever dropped.
She is not an easy teacher- no. But I grew to love her and I'm sad that this 2nd class will be my last with her. I'm a fan, but I like sardonic dogmatic smartypants, myself. She is all that. I took her online.
Yes she is very intelligent, and her lectures are interesting; however, not helpful for the course. She goes off on tangents about things that are irrelevant. Smart woman, bad teacher. Difficult grader. Her comments on the work you submitted are not helpful, just harsh. I would not take her. I liked her at first but that quickly changed.
She is awesome. This is college, not preschool and she expects college level work. Yes, she grades hard but she makes you a better student. I would take her again
I would recommend this instructor because her assignments are concise. She does not overload you with work, but her weekly assignments cover everything that you need to know which is great. She gives you 2 attempts on quizzes, and breaks down your grade with a rubric which I loved!
This class was challenging but I learned so much. Her instructions are very clear and her expectations are straight-forward. She responds quickly to emails. You can tell that her goal is for her students to learn. I would definitely take her again.
She is really great. As long as you do the assignments (which I missed a few), you get a good grade on it. She really cares about the students and even emailed me asking if everything was okay since I wasn't keeping up. Quizzes get 2 tries and after the first try, it shows which ones you got wrong. Just keep up with the reading.
I thought this class was pretty interesting. I'm an English major but I also really love history & we read all kinds of historical works, including poetry & short stories. There are several short assignments (Strict word counts), a couple essays, & quizzes just about every other week. The midterm/final exams aren't too bad. I recommend this class.
Excellent professor, knows what she's about and what she wants from you. So long as you read and talk at least a little you'll be fine for her quizzes and writings. She is a little sarcastic, and sometimes goes overboard but if you have any problems she is super approachable and very helpful. Her classes are all brilliant and she's really cool.
Keep up with the readings and assignments and you'll pass. Very strict with word count. If you write more than 250 words she will take points off. Quizes and tests are given two attempts so it's pretty easy to pass. 9 written assignments, two essays, one midterm and final and a final project/class presentation. Smart teacher, class is entertaining
She's a good teacher, but she expects a lot. Do the readings, pay attention in class. Don't skip class. The little attendance points add up when it comes to geting you final grade.
This professor changed her expectations without warning. The extra credit points that were supposed to be added to final grade was only added to lowest score on a writing assignment and the final was changed from non-cumulative to cumulative. I received a B and only did half of my writing assignments. Her feedback was useless, and she's arrogant.
*Theres no freedom in this course. *I should be allowed to do the assignments freely so that I can plan my days ahead of time- thats why I took an online course. *250 word limit isnt hard to meet. *No room for creativity- take this course if you are a robot & only follow directions. *Really regret course * Only answered 1 of my emails
I took her online class and I feel like she wrote all the instructions ten years ago and hasnt updated it since bc some of the things she says dont match up to the textbook. The instructions for each assignment are super vague and i usually have no idea what she wants me to do. Managed to scrape by with an A, though I had no idea what was going on
Professor Paz is great! Her lectures are very informative and she makes them interesting so you'll be learning a lot! Tests and quizzes are not that hard at all, you just have to pay attention to the class. Don't be late or miss classes
I don't know how this professor has so many good ratings. The book was so hard to read that I couldn't follow the class. When I emailed for help, she would reply with quotes from the book. :/ The only way to learn in this class is by reading. Someone should probably let her know that there are multiple learning styles and this is 2015 not 1850.
This professor is amazing. I have never learned as much in a literature class as I did in this one. Dr. Casmier-Paz is extremely intelligent and nice. Once you figure out how she wants assignments written, it's very easy. Make sure you use MLA format! Do not take this class if you aren't willing to do the reading. Loved this class.
EXTREMELY TOUGH GRADER. Will take off half points on ANY & most writing assignments (which is the majority of your grade). Never received more than a 9.5/10. Tests are clear & straightforward; no trick questions. Quick to respond to emails. NOT quick to grading the writing assignments. You have to turn in the2nd one before you get the 1st one back.
Her rubric often contradicted the assignment heading (confusion) and although she answered the emailed question, it wasn't very clear, either. She follows the rubric very closely, so make sure you do exactly what it says (unless it's word count, at which point, you might want to ask). Overall, if you read the books, the class isn't too difficult.
It's near impossible to not get behind on the reading. You will be reading A L-O-T. Even when you think you're caught up, hey guess what? You're not. Other than that the papers and tests are pretty to the text. No funny business but good Lord will you read.
She was a really awesome instructor and we had great class discussions. Make sure you actually do the reading because you start class with a writing assignment based on the reading assignment. She also posts her lecture slides online after class which is really helpful because the class usually gets wrapped up in discussion.
I love Dr. Casmier-Paz she is an amazing person. For her theory course I did not learn as much information as I wanted to in this course. The theory course is based around Huckleberry Finn which is why I feel like I did not retain a lot about theory but I know a lot about Huck Finn. Overall I received a B in the course and you HAVE TO READ!
Dr. Casmier-Paz is very passionate about slave narratives. In person this course is amazing. I can tell you that I actually learned in this course. Yes, you read a lot. There are in class writing assignments every class that are worth more than your final and your mid term which honestly I did not agree with but hey, her course.
I absolutely love this professor. I earned a C in the course, but if I had put in more time/turned in my course essays on time, I would have been golden. I felt her grading was fair, but be sure to do the reading (it is super important). She really wants you to understand theory and is willing to discuss theories not taught in the course.
Dr. Casmier-Paz is a tough grader, but she cares a lot about students actually understanding the material. She is very intelligent and that comes off as intimidating so be prepared for that. Overall, the class was great. Her lectures help so much in understanding the material so it is super important to be in class.
Very straightforward: do writing assignments (7)/essays( 2), take quizzes (7)/tests (2), get at least a B. Writing assignments and essays are 250 and 500 words MAXIMUM, respectively, so economy of language is crucial. Clear rubric for each assignment. Cite your sources properly.
A very strict teacher. Even the smallest mistake will grant you a loss of points. It is much more important to focus on what the student has learned rather than focus on a missing period or titling your paper wrong, among other things. I don't know why she is so anal about her grading, but prepare yourself for that and a whole lot of reading.
The online version of this class was horrible. It is basically a history class, not an English class. You are never actually taught anything. You read the material and you are quizzed on it. The PowerPoints are useless. No relevant feedback is provided. I didn't learn anything from this teacher.
This class has an overwhelming amount of reading. 6 short essays, 2 quizzes, 1 midterm, 1 final. The readings were difficult to follow. I did not learn anything from this class. There was no encouraging or helpful feedback on papers.
Six weeks, six modules, with strict 250 word responses for each. There are 4 exams that are multiple choice (easy). We read three narratives, or a total of about 600 pages, along with 4 critical essays that help you understand the slave narrative conventions and historical importance. Strict on grammar and word count, but a very nice professor.
Prof Casmier-Paz very upbeat. But don't let that fool you, she takes her job seriously. Has a lot of wit so if you can't take sarcasm, not really a good choice. Material was dense to me, but she encourages you to ask questions, in the class and in email. Make sure you read the materials and then some more.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS ONLINE UNLESS YOU HAVE A VERY OPEN SCHEDULE! I take online courses because I work almost every day and I need flexibility. You will miss assignments if you don't check up on this class daily, the modules are unlocked one at a time, and tests and quizzes are only unlocked on the weekends. Worst online course ever.
You read roughly 150 pages a week, with quizzes on that reading biweekly. I guess its possible to remember 300 pages of reading for a 30 question quiz? This professor has a poor attitude as well and her assignments are vague. Takes a while to respond to emails and grade assignments.
This was the toughest class I have taken at UCF thus far. Be prepared to read and analyze. There isn't much writing although she is very picky about her student's critical thinking skills. Because of the nature of her challenging course, I ended up with a high B. Since I had done all my assignments and quizzes on time, she rewarded me with an A :)
There is a lot of reading, at least two 300 page essays per biweekly quiz that asks technically specific details. The writing assignments are short, forcing you to think critically and concretely rather than abstract. There is decent feedback from this professor though.
Prof Casmier-Paz is very helpful, approachable, and punctual. She encourages in-depth discussions and offers alternative perspectives. Classwork was just short writing assignments based on the readings and one PPT presentation so an easy A if you read! Questions are specific so please don't think you can finesse an A just by reading CliffsNotes.
Not very engaging. Takes points off on writing assignment for the tiniest things. I learn nothing from her. It's mostly reading, which I am fine with. A few open book quizzes and writing assignments that sometimes are unclear. I will never take her again. I would have received a C for a class I could make an A on. Thank God she gave extra credit.
Had this class once a week, and every class there were at least 3 presentations on top of a lecture. She takes attendance or does in-cass writing assignments for attendance purposes. Fair amount of reading due before each class if you space it out. No papers, but assignments/quizzes due almost every week. Engaging class discussions. Very woke prof
DO NOT TAKE HER ONLINE CLASSES! She is rude and unprofessional in emails, assigned 7 new assignments 1/3 of the way through the summer semester, and grades based on how she's feeling rather than your actual work. Her rubrics are impossible and she is not willing to elaborate or explain. Awful teacher.
I loved professor C-P! The course required a lot of reading, but tests & papers are straight from the readings. Papers challenge you to think critically & in 250 words or less. There are several of these papers throughout the semester, but she quickly responds to emails of you have any questions. Looking forward to taking her again in the future!
As a former graduate in the English program at UCF, she is by far one of my most memorable professors. "Narratives of Slavery" is the type of class that you remember from years to come. Her style of teaching, advice, and lectures pushed me as a writer and I continue to follow her advice in the professional writing field.
Her classes are very well organized and easy to navigate. The reading expectations are unattainable sometimes. 250 or less word count (quotes included) makes some questions impossible to answer. If you even miss a comma in your writings, she will deduct points.
This professor is the most frustrating person ever. I took a full time schedule and did extremely well in my other classes, this one not so much (did not fail, but did not do as well as I wanted). Her grading is extremely convoluted and when I asked her how I could improve, she gave me vague and minimally helpful advice, beware her online course.
I took her online class. Really picky with what you have to say in your discussions and papers. Rude with her feedback and comments. If you dont interpret a text correctly, shell rip your head off and claim what its *supposed* to mean. Lol bye.
I took Narratives of Slavery online, and it's one of the best classes I've ever taken. I learned so ton and my reading and writing skills improved a lot. A TON of reading, and the 250 word limits are challenging, but it's 100% worth it. The readings are (obviously) emotionally heavy, but you learn SO much. Inspired me to keep learning more after
Took this class online spring 2020, First class I ever received a B in my 2 years at UCF, grades extremely tough and there is nothing you can do to better your assignments. She leaves feedback in a tone where she makes fun of your interpretation even though most of these assignments are opinion-based. Don't take her, will drop your GPA.
Dr. Casmier-Paz is passionate about this course and she provided PowerPoints, online links, videos, and poems The 250-word max is challenging but helps the student stay focused. Rubrics are clear; feedback is very helpful. Very thought-provoking course and inspired me to learn more. Do the reading and work, and you will ace this course.
She expects MLA formatting without it being in the rubric. She picks out every little detail and doesn't accept anything but she wants even if it is wrong. I would have dropped if I could without messing up my finical aid.
All assignments were opinion based written in 250 word limits, but when you are graded, she grades them as if they were not opinion base. The grading rubric was tough which made no sense. I read all assignments and paid in attention in class, but never got graded higher than an 80%. The tests were very complicated.
If I could go back in time and not take this class I would. If your analysis of papers doesn't match what she has in mind you are wrong. I emailed and contacted her a lot about grades because she is a heavy grader. This was something we all had an issue with. It sucks out the fun of literature and writing and I never want to look at this class.
Her course on slave narratives is challenging but also very interesting. There is A LOT of reading between the narratives and essays. Sometimes, it can be challenging to get everything done which I think is the main downside to this course. There is in-class writing every class for 10 minutes and if you don't attend and do them you will not pass.
I have high respect for my professors but this is one that I absolutely regard to as a joke and a total abuser of power. She also waits for the last minute to grade so you don't really know where you sit with this class. Grammar and word MAXIMUMS on papers and points off if you don't cover all three ideas in less than 500 words. Good luck.
She asks for about a page's worth of information in 250 words or less and is a tough grader. There is also no room for differing opinions on literature interpretations. She doesn't provide any PowerPoints or additional links so her online course is solely reliant on the readings. And the readings are very lengthy: 50-100 pages per discussion.
Took AML3614. Prescribes loads of reading; class attendance mandatory and your grade will plunge if you miss days. 10 min In-class writings each class, can be stressful, fast-paced, and she grades hard on them. She can be nice though. If you don't HAVE to take her, you'd save yourself stress not doing so. If you must, just prepare to work hard.
If there is another professor option, choose them. She grades based on your opinion and if you don't share her opinion you'll likely fail. Also, the tiniest grammar mistakes will get several points taken off your grade. Expects full points to be made in under 250 words on readings that are 100 pages.
AML 3614. Heavy reading, but it is a lit course, and readings are great. High expectations, but reasonable if you put work in with integrity. She's funny and engaging. She's doing important work, introducing valuable readings, and you will do well in the class if you work hard and show up. Other ratings on here about her seem extreme. I liked her!
Writing assignments are 250 word MAXIMUM on 50+ pages of reading. Writing assignments have roughly 2-3 prompts to address... remember, this is all under 250 words or you fail! These writings ask for YOUR opinion on the readings, but when you list an opinion that she doesn't agree with, she says there's no evidence that YOUR OPINION is correct.
I know there are a lot of bad reviews but she is a really great professor. The grading criteria is clear and the assignments challenge you to write everything you need to say in 250 words. If you want to challenge yourself I really recommend this course to you. Don't be afraid of the reading as its a lot but very worth it.
Reading-heavy course and challenging (but in the best way). Take this course if you want to learn! Professor Casmier-Paz is one of the best professors I have had at UCF and the passion for the material just oozes from her. She is kind but will not budge if you do not do the work. Again, take this if you actually want to learn!
Lynn Casmier-Paz is a good professor but doesn't respect or care about her students. She is rude if you don't share the same opinions as her and write the way she wants. Her lectures are engaging and fun but I honestly don't like her as a person. Since the class is only once a week, it's bearable. Just get ready to read a lot... like a lot.
She is a nice person and very funny but is not a professor I would ever take again. I think she has good intentions but poor execution. Doesn't seem to care about her students. Not the worst professor, but certainly would not recommend.
DO NOT TAKE HER IF YOU DON'T HAVE TOO!!! She is horrible and rude. Just not a good professor!
Not sure why she has any bad reviews. Just read the stories and respond to the discussion posts. They are incredibly easy and so are the quizzes/tests. You have 2 attempts, and as long as you know where things are in the book, you should pass just fine. I have never needed to contact her, so I can't speak much about that, but she grades fair.
This class requires a lot of work, but using unstuck study alongside the readings really helped me stay on top of the heavy workload. The professor can be picky, but engaging with the material and their specific feedback style pays off. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
