She taught an interesting and fun class, yes it was a bit difficult, but if you do what your supposed to you will come out with a good grade and a much better understanding of Speech. It really aided me in my public speaking as well. Thanks Lynn!
She is an excellent teacher who enjoys having fun in the class, but is serious about the speaches she expects students to give. pay attention and follow the speach guidelines and you will do great!
I really enjoyed Harper's class. She makes the impossible, possible. She is easy to understand and easy to speak to. Take this class.
Really nice teacher overall, granted she can have her off days just like everyone! If you do all 4 speeches plus the other written work, theres no way of failing. She helps you develop and deliver the best speech she possibly can. Attendance is mandatory and if you miss more than 2 she starts taking points off. Otherwise not too bad at all.
Great teacher, some how makes speech fun. Do the work and you should have no issues with getting an A.
awesome teacher, easy class. everyone should take speech with lynn.
Lynn is great she sweet super kool. She has here moments watch out for empty water bottles.. She a great teacher and coach
Lynn was really fun. She makes a very comfortable atmosphere and makes public speaking much easier! just follow the guidelines, come to class, be respectful and you're set!
Harper is the coolest instructor I have had this year. I hate talking in front of people and I thought I would just die! She has a way of making you reeally comfortable. This is the instructor to take for public speaking if you really fear it.
She is one of the most wonderful teachers I ever had. She is intelligent, cool and very funny. You learn while you have a good time. I loved it!!! Definitely recommending her!!!!
Lynn was AWESOME....as other people have said probably one the greatest teachers i have had. Dont buy the book cause the two tests are off the power points. Offers A LOT of extra credit so take advantage of that and you will get an A.
She's definitely a great teacher. Really knows what shes doing. As long as you study the given material, tests are a breeze.
I have never had an easier class before in my life. She makes it so easy to toi follow. If you show up and take the notes off the powerpoints and do the work which isn't much then you will breeze through. DON'T BUY THE BOOK...all of the material is on powerpoint for the test. I actually looked forward to going to this class.
First off, DO NOT BUY THE BOOK! She does not use the book ever. All her test questions are taken off the notes you take in class. She is a teacher that will make public speaking easy! I loved having Harper as a teacher and would take her again.
Very resourceful and helpful. A master at her craft. Learned alot and didnt give assignments where you had to play the guessing game. Grade a instructor, down to earth and intelligent!
Harper is the BEST. I had so much fun in her class.Keep it up Harper!!!Take her class you'll be glad you did.!!
This is the second class I've taken with Lynn Harper. I have learned a lot- both with interviews and public speaking. Don't ask questions that are printed in the syllabus because she won't answer them. She sets the bar high for speeches- which is good because I've really had to put some work into them. If I had to take speech- I would take her.
if it is one person i could picture drinking with at the bar after class it is harper. harper is cool calm and collected. Her grades are based on her speeches and if you try you will do ok even if you stink at giving speeches. just dont be a punk in her class or else she will stick you one, cause she don't mess around!
I hate public speaking and was nervous taking speech but harper is amazing!! Def. recommend her as a teacher. Easy A and all you have to do is try! She is the best by far! Great teacher!!
harper rocks the casbah. she is the coolest teacher ever!!! I hope she gets a raise because she deserves it. She is on top of things, she is more than helpful and has a sense of humor. Her grading takes some time but If i had to do another speech class you bet your cookies it would be with the Harpster!!!!!
Harper really helped puts you at ease with public speaking. I truly recommend her and will hopefully get to take another one of her classes soon.
Learned a lot! Was an interesting class. Harper is awesome. Taking it during the summer was hard though.
very down to earth. Harper expects you to do your work and participate. Dont try to bs her, because it wont work! Learned alot and had fun!
first of all DONT BUY THE BOOK you wont use it. she makes public speaking easy. but you have to work for your grade. it wont be a walk in the park. just dont get on her bad sad, she does give many extra credit options.also attendance is mandatory overall good teacher
She is super cool. Very wacky. Speeches aren't that simple though. If you complete your speeches in the right time and do all the easy assignments, this should be an easy class for you.
She's a great teacher, she's very direct and blunt which I really like.
She can be very intimidating but she has your best interest in mind. Always says she doesn't set her students up for failure. Midterm and final were very easy. Speeches aren't too bad just make sure you do what she asks you to do and you will be fine
Harper is awesome! She made public speaking so much more relaxed. Speeches are easy if you follow the criteria. The midterm and final are so easy it's ridiculous. Don't buy the book because she doesn't use it and even tells you not to buy it. She's an easy grader I think. I got an A on all my speeches and in the class and I put in decent effort
I've seen this teacher humiliate a student and go off on an entire class due to one student being disruptive. I have a heart condition and shouldn't be startled, so when this teacher slammed her books down on a desk and proceeded to throw a trantrum, I had to drop. Speech is hard no matter who you get, but there are nicer teachers. Try someone else
Harper can be a good teacher but if she doesn't like someone in the class she makes it very clear to everyone. I've seen her humiliate and embaress students before for asking questions and even called them stupid. She is very tough when she doesn't like you. Book isn't used t all. Midterm and final are beyond easy and speeches are o.k.
She has energy which makes it fun, but yells and swears sometimes over tiny mistakes.
Do not take this class, she calls students, and will take out every problem in her life out on your class. She favorites people, and laughs at the people who answer questions wrong in the class during lectures. SHE IS RUDE.
Harper is not helpful and brags about smacking down students who challenged her. I have seen her humiliate students in class also. If you have a question about something, don't bother asking because she will only laugh at you. Expect dirty looks and attitude in her class. Harper is a horrible teacher who was probably a good one once.
Wow, after reading these previous comments I have to disagree. Harper is certainly a tough instructor but she is more than fair. She has a great deal of energy, however when my classmates don't listen she will make it known. She is only trying to get students to critically think and listen. She states that all the time.
She isnt always helpful and she makes it clear when she thinks someone asked a stupid question. if you want her to like you dont interrupt her or talk too much in her class be respectful. shes a lenient grader on speeches though, people who have really obvious nervousness but well organized speeches get mid to high Bs.
Harper is a little cooky, but if you do the work you'll get a good grade. She's can also be very understanding. Book isn't really used at all, I think I had to read like two chapters total.
If you're going to take this class, DO NOT select her for your teacher. She is rude and inconsiderate. She takes out all her life problems on her students. This is not just my opinion. You know she's bad when the average grade of the class is a D. Harper doesn't care about anyone's opinion. It's her way or no way. Expect lots of temper tantrums
This class is mandatory but if you are going to choose professors avoid this professor. She is rude and often makes fun of students in class. She does use the book sparingly and lectures very rarely, she does have a powerpoint but she does not give it out, so you have to pay attention to both lecture and the powerpoint. She grades very hard.
Harper is a very interesting teacher. The class is an easy one overall, but make sure you are on her good side. Did really well in the class. Make sure you listen to her constantly and dont come in late. Show up, and be respectful, or else this class may be difficult.
She was such a rude teacher. As if having to take public speaking wasn't hard enough, she found a way to make it worse. She belittled students, and honestly talked way to much about herself. I dropped her class after two speech's. If you want a great speech teacher I suggest Professor Duffy.
Did not enjoy this class at all. I heard from my friends that their professors were enjoyable and fairly easy; not her. I would recommend talking this class with another professor.
If you want a teacher that knows what they are talking about, is strict but fair. You can't go wrong with Lynn Harper. If you show that you have worked on your speeches she is very fair with the grade. If you slack off she'll grade you as so. She doesn't take disrespect at all. Act like an adult and she'll treat you like an adult.
Harper was one of the better teacher's i have had. I was nervous about speech but she made the class enjoyable. The speech criteria is clear-cut. She can have her moments thought. As long as you try and listen to her feedback you will do great.
Lynn Harper is a wonderful teacher to have! The first day of class, she will list ALL of the expectations in her class - pay attention, read syllabus before asking question, and that you have to work harder to fail then pass. All that is said that first day is true and I was able to pass with a +A
Terrible professor. Very offensive, brings her personal problems and attitude into class, takes anger out on her students, and makes students cry. Do not take! Once forced the class to say the n word to prove a point of some sort. The whole class is basically her saying how sucky you are. Cannot stand the woman.
Harper is a very interesting professor. This class is to help you work with groups. She tells you what she wants and then you need to do what she says. She likes to trick you and you need to interact with your group to find the problem. Yeah she has a bit of an attitude but as long as you follow directions you should be good. She is a tough grader.
Harper is a tough grader, she humiliates students in front of the class, brings out her personal frustration on the class. After speech 2 the majority of the class dropped leaving only 13 people in the class. Throws tantrums and doesn't care about what you think. Expect to fail at least one speech, don't bother going to her office for help.
Do NOT take Harper. She thinks she's hilarious when what she's really doing in making fun of her students and being extremely disrespectful. Her instructions where never clear and you find out what you have to do after she grades your work. She changed the syllabus mid-semester. Never answers emails. Hated this class and it was her fault
I thought Harper was more than fair. Yeah, she is tough but she also cares about you and your grade. I listened to my classmates talk about how hard she is, but that is not true at all. She puts all the assignments on blackboard and the rubric for every speech. Things were a little crazy this semester because she had surgery. I still got an 'A'.
*Disclosure: took honors section, might be biased* She's a very conflicting teacher: she grades speeches with A's everywhere, but the few written exams are graded stringently; she has a good sense of humor, but often takes out frustration on the class. She had surgery this year, so there were complications, but she didn't handle them very well.
She is GREAT. Inspirational, passionate, smart, fun. I took a Honor Class Fundamentals of Speech and it was stressful because of the subject, not because of her. We did a lot of team exercises and had very short lectures. There are 4 speeches and it is hard, but you learn how to deal with stress and what to do when you go "blank". Take it.
For this being an introductory speech class, it was very difficult. If you are not good at public speaking, Harper is not the teacher for you. She makes you feel dumb for asking questions and she grades extremely hard. It was not easy to pass this class.
She is a terribly tough grader. As it is people fear public speaking, well having her will triple your fear. I was seconds late to the 3rd day of class and she locked me out of the room saying she wasn't going to let people in who are late.. Even though I paid the 300 something dollars to get in the class. Recommend avoiding her
Mrs. Harper likes to make jokes all the time, and most o the time they're pretty funny. Other times, she is EXTREMELY rude and likes to make fun of students in the class. She rarely responds to emails, and she is not very helpful either. I do NOT recommend taking her if you are not good at public speaking.
I loved taking her class. She does joke around, but it is all in good spirits. She doesn't give many tests/quizzes which is nice. She will help you if you ask her. She will give you second chances if she can see you are trying. I recommend her class.
she is a hard grader. You ask her for help and she looks at you like ur dumb. If you ask her a question about the assignments she will say one thing and then grade on another. She doses not answer her email. She also takes a long time to give back passed assignments. She is rude. Avoid at all costs. she will increase fear of public speecking
Awful! Talks down to students! You never know when she will embarrass you in front of the class. Tough grader. When she doesn't go off on students she does have great lectures. You must attend class or you will fail.
If you are whiny, sensitive, and are used to getting away with things: do not take her class. However, if you put in effort, have thick skin, a morbid sense of humor, and are on time - this class is an easy A. During speeches she will not let ANYTHING distract you and is always there to help! Replying to emails is so/so. Loads of Extra Credit!
For a communications teacher it surprised me how little communication took place between professor and students. Writing emails and getting no response, to being made fun of for asking questions made this a difficult course. If you show up for lecture and take notes, you'll easily pass. If anything, make sure you prepare speeches in advance.
I took this class my very first semester at CLC and after taking this class i felt it was a good practice for future classes. Then again 3 years of speech years before were helpful.
Her speech grading I think stinks. She says your doing fine in her class, but when you check your grade you find out that you're failing the class. Very unsupportive, and she presents unacceptable behavior towards her students. Ridiculous.
She is the worst professor ever to work at CLC. She should be fired for life, and should have her degree of communications taken away from her... Worst Professor EVER!!! :(
Worst experience with a teacher I've had in a long time. Never taking thing this teacher again. Very rude, and doesn't know how to grade people's speeches the correct way, even though those peoples speeches were just fine.
Worst Teacher ever in the history of CLC's existence. Avoid taking her at all costs. She will make fun of you and not help you with your speeches. Very inconsiderate professor ever to work at the college.
Harper is a great person and she is very passionate and good at public speaking, but when it comes to teaching, she has many flaws. Her attitude and the way she talks to her students is very disrespectful. Honestly, I did fine in her class and got a B. But I definitely deserved an A. She takes points off for the most minute things.
Worst professor ever!!!
Talks down to her students a lot and makes fun of them when they make a mistake on their speeches. She is very childish and rude. Tries to give constructive feedback, but then students get a bad grade. Awful!!!
I've taken Harper for two different classes. Maybe I had a different professor than what I've read on this site, because while she is tough she also knows her craft. I would take her again. What I learned in her class had helped me in other classes. You really have to pay attention and not slack off.
Helpful, encouraging, organized, and professional.
She is a good teacher. If you follow in class and don't slack off you will pass. Study her midterm and final papers that she gives you word for word! I found her funny and enjoyed her class but I know others did not. She does give pop quizzes so beware of those, if you miss them you can fall behind pretty quickly!
Probably one of the worst classes I've ever taken. Sometimes I'll see one of my classmates and we'll be like, "Oh! You were in that nightmarish speech class with me weren't you?" One nice thing is that she does not tolerate people showing disrespect towards anyone during the speeches. She's very tough love if love at all.
Harper rubbed me the wrong way at first. Then she grew on me, and the class was weirdly fun. If you take her, give her a chance. I suck at public speaking, but I got an A because I incorporated the elements she wanted & followed each rubric. Doesnt grade down if youre nervous or your voice quivers. Two rules: go to class & FOLLOW THE RUBRIC
She's a fine teacher to fulfill a speech requirement. She won't answer questions easily and she does tease students a lot. Read and follow speech requirements to the letter, and be ready to figure out most of it on your own. She's not a bad person, and I did find her lectures helpful, but not the teacher if you actually want to master speech giving
Most frustrating class Ive taken. Grading system was unfair, the actual grading was inconsistent, asking for help with an assignment will leave you with more questions than answers, written and multiple choice tests had questions with answers that were either straight up wrong or made no sense. Get literally any other prof if you can.
Terrible professor. She's very rude and isn't very helpful when you ask her questions. I don't think she considers the fact that many people have anxiety/stage fright when giving speeches because she is an extremely tough grader and takes off points for every little flaw in a student's speech.
I ended up dropping the class because of speech anxiety and she wasn't helping. My sister and I signed up for the class together and every week, she tells me how rude Lynn is to students and how unprepared everyone feels going into speeches and exams. I don't regret dropping the class one bit.
She is by far the worst professor I ever had. Her sarcasm was funny for the first day, but soon got old very fast and just felt rude. If you have a question on something be prepared to be humiliated in front of everybody. Her feed back isnt helpful at all, it isnt even constructed criticism. Please avoid this Professor at all cost!
Like being made fun? Like being scared to come to class because she might humiliate you? Well this is the class for you! She won't help you when you ask for it and won't give you the resources necessary to pass the class. She'll mess up your grade and has preferred students. So come on down to Harper's speech class where dreams don't come true.
Harper knows a lot about public speaking and I learned so much in this class. I don't like giving speeches, but if you follow her guidelines, you'll end up a much better and more confident speaker. I highly recommend her if you really want to improve on your presentation skills!
Don't listen to the negative reviews here! Harper is one of the most knowledgeable professors I've had at CLC and she's funny. She makes the class interesting with her quirkiness and she gives us a lot of freedom for developing our topics. You have to show up so you know what she expects and if you do, you'll easily get an A!
In my experience, Professor Harper was one of the best professors I've had at CLC. There may be some students who are critical of her because she expects you to take her class seriously. If you don't wanna learn speech or work very hard then you won't like her class. She challenges her students to do their best work!
Will hurt your feelings, is rude and unkind to students, talks politically and will make u feel bad for having different views then her. She is inconsiderate about zoom and its malfunctions if you have any. Has no remorse over you or your grade and is just overall relentless and ruthless when it comes to making comments about students. 0/10.
if you are good in public speaking take her class but she is a tough grader and a perfectionist. i honestly have the worst experience with her because she has a really bad attitude and never gives good feedback. her teaching methods are just her talking random things off topic. don't get the textbooks its required but we never use it.
I honestly was a little scared going into this class. I heard some negatives about her, but I loved her! I understand where the negatives might come from, but it's because she wants you to be successful. Read all directions clearly! Read the prompts entirely and you'll be fine. She grades strictly from the rubrics. As long as you follow it, good.
Could've felt more involved in practice activities in public speaking. It would've been great to allow more of teacher peer feedback. She is a tough grader. If you are sensitive person, look at other professors. She can be passive aggressive.
Harper is great!! Dont take yourself too seriously in this class, and get ready to laugh at yourself! Harper doesnt expect perfection, just read the rubrics and BE PREPARED!! Its embarrassing if youre not.
Awesome teacher, she knows how to express herself and helps others do the same, one of my favorite quotes from her that went like Dont do something someone else will like, that you like. Do what you like and go from there Literally the only problem I did have with her was: note card same size paper. its petty. Everything else was AMAZING.
She was very rude. If it didn't go her way, good luck. I accidentally walked in during a speech, she got extremely mad then tried to sabotage my speech by trying to erase stuff off of my cards. When there was nothing wrong. She hated noises yet would make noise with her feet or smirk during our speeches. You can survive but she can ruin your mood.
Very much did not like the teacher. She did not help students grow.
Terrible environment and very rude. Hated her class cuz of her
RUNNNNNN!!!!! dont take this class she was SO RUDE AND HORRIBLE
Offered extra credit but never added it to the final grade and not flexible with deadlines. Projects were straightforward but you are expected to know the assignments without asking. Seems chill for the most part but not a fun class on her bad days.
Can be very rude and hard headed, there is no point in arguing with her so if you mess up and want to explain yourself, oh well to bad take the f. However she does foster a positive class environment in the students as she encourages conversation during lecture. And we unite in disliking her rude attitude.
she's a very funny lady, talks a lot. Make sure you at least try on the projects
Get any other professor. Her teaching style is super frustrating so just save yourself the trouble. Often in a bad mood and her class feels like a waste of time because she's unorganized.
shes good
worst teacher I've ever had. picks favorites. she rolls her eyes if she does not liek ur speech. run dont take her class.
Professor Lynn Harper can be quite blunt, but engaging with her teaching style pays off. The class has a positive environment, and using resources like unstuck study alongside the textbook helped me navigate the assignments. Overall, a challenging but rewarding experience.
I had her as my speech teacher, and she picked favorites. If you're under time for your speech, or over, she would dock heavy points. She doesn't explain directions clearly, then when it comes time for your speech, you won't get the grade you expected. She also gets very mad when someone makes even the slightest noise on accident during a speech.
Watch out if you don't attend a couple of classes don't bother showing up again she's gonna be very rude to you. She's also very passive aggressive and she loves her favorites. While some lectures can be interesting it's very boring and you might wanna fall asleep. Run as fast as you can.
Hyper, Lynn is not a good teacher and dropped students over not bringing a visual aid when saying it was gonna knock points off instead so then I had to go to the dean and get classes moved because she was stating I was gonna get dropped from the class.
Honestly Professor Harper can be passive aggressive but her class is very straightforward. All you have to do is be present and meet her criteria, it's really not rocket science lol. Don't pick arguments with her just show up and get your work done and leave, simple.
She makes you feel bad for asking questions. She said it's “her way of teaching”. Be prepared to see her use unnecessary facial expressions. She had mentioned to add extra credit points, none added.
