The best thing this class has to offer are free lecture notes. Test material comes from her lectures but there's a lot to study and memorize. Unless you're willing to study and memorize, you probably won't pass.
So easy. Honors is easier than regular. Her lab is more fun than the lab everyone else has to go to. I got higher grades on my test when I just read her lecture notes the night before for thirty minutes than spending days on the assigned reading.
A very intelligent & intelligent instructor. Explains things well.If you study & memorize the notes you can get an A.During lecture if she keeps repeating something it'll be Xtra Credit on the exam
She is a great teahcer. I reccomend taking her honors lab class it's fun and educational.
She is a great teacher. She teaches you about more than is in any text book. She knows more about the environment and healthy living than anyone I've ever met. She will give you knowledge that will help you live a happy and healthy life.
Mrs. Polasek is a very intelligent woman. She is able to answer any question her students ask. I really like how she gives us lecture note because then we can focus more on lecture instead of trying to scramble to write everything down. She is a beauti
Extremely disorganized and an uninspiring lecturer. Some of the most poorly-written tests I have come across in any science class. Harangues the class about having 'the professional edge', then arrives late nearly every day and has fouled-up labs. Take Nakamura instead, if possible.
It's nice to have lecture notes because her lectures tend to be vague-to pass tests you'd better read the book! Disorganized, not super helpful-and I actually like her!The environmental and health emphasis is great. Nice lady but don't rely on lecture notes to get you thru!
Nice lady. Passionate about the material. The notes are nice, but not in depth enough for what she tests on. Read the book. The lab stinks. IT's not her fault there's just no time to do all the things she wants you to do and then she'll test you over stuff you didn't see or learn.
Lovely professor. You really learn alot and she lets the class apply to ur life. Read the book and you'll be fine. I love her!
She is very interesting! Teaches a lot about everyday life, making us a lot more aware whats out there. She is passionate about her career, the labs are easy, the notes are great help because you will pay attention to the lectures, the tests are challanging but study the notes and you'll do fine.
Very easy.
Proff. Polasek is a great professor. She enjoys teaching the course. Take the Honors section if you need it, because it is easy. Do the extra credit and get an "A"
A nice woman & a really good teacher. Cares very much about her students. I'd definitely recommend her!
she is the best prof ever. she relates everything to your life, and makes you want to do whatever she says. the notes she gives out are vague, but if you read the book you will easily get an A. take her she is the greatest and very passionate
She is very easy going and her lectures are great. I enjoyed her course, I took her in a 5wk session and her class was very easy pay attention to her lectures, do the vocabularies and you will pass her class. Lab was not easy, but it was not her fault that was just the book, but she was very very helpful. If you do learn one thing is to be more kin
She is a good professor and is really nice. She gives out vocabulary words and short answer essays. She also gives a lab quiz and 3 tests before the final. Overall, you learn a lot about nutrition and about drinking lots of water for our health.
this is the best teacher if you need a science with lab she relates all the material to everyday life and hands out study notes, pay attention to lecture i got a A in the 5 week session, you will become conscience of your health
Get the extra credit points- you may need them. Many of her test questions are ambiguous and confusing. Could be more clear. Very sweet and cares. One thing-the sucky labs are her fault-she WROTE the lab book you silly rabbits!
Have to be honors, Labs are soooo much fun with her and the honors class!
Mrs. Polasek speaks VERY softly and my class had the horror of her MICROPHONE malfunctioning for most of the semester. Her tests are rather ambiguous. She is a VERY politically liberal professor. While this is her political opinion and no one must flaw her for this, she interjects it into her material at -EVERY- opportunity. C+ or B- Prof. -JK
man lets say this, i got a "B" in this class WITHOUT reading the book. thats how good of a teacher she is, also if u pay attention. great teacher. makes class a breeze. pretty cool class. i regret buying the book. nice teacher. just cut her some slack, shes too nice. first lab is with snails
AWESOME professor.. make sure you download and memorize the notes.. and you are guaranteed an A for sure.. she's GREAT!
I took her biology class during the summer. She lectures so well, you actually get what she's talking about. I will definittely take her for microbiology.
microbio is a hard subject with a lot to memorize, but professor polasek makes it easy. If you want a teacher that will not drill you 6 feet below the ground and make you sacrifice 40 hours a week just to get an "A" then polasek is your kind of teacher. And her labs are not long and tedious with tons of redundent information to learn.
I don't know what all of you are talking abt. She is the WORST tchr I've ever had. She's not clear, doesn't answere studnt's Qs. She asks a Q to 30 stdnts and no one can answr her Qs because students don't know. The reason students don't know is because she doesn't teach good. There is no test review & her tests are tricky.
lots of hw but from notes. She is very nice if you study notes and homework you will pass. Labs are quick and simple, However the Lab Final is difficult you have to study.
She is a good teacher. Explains well and is willing to help you. If you study, you will pass. She is an easy explainer and does not let you get an F.

You will really "get" microbiology with this wonderful teacher. Her descriptions and stories really help you understand how the world of science works. This course requires study and effort. There is no way around the work. She has challenging lab practicals so you will have to be on your toes. She has a delightful personality! Take her!
Very good teacher. Easy, helpful, fun. Comparing to other Micro teachers, her class is the walk through. You do have to study and do the labs, but tests are easy and labs are fun. Take her and only her. I wish all teachers could be as interesting as her.
The BEST Microbiology Professor at LAVC. Highly recommended.
I learned so much. Very informative. At time can be boring during lecture. She tries to inform you about whats right and wrong. Had a blast in her class. Don't miss out!
Love Mrs Polasek. Her subject is very interesting and hands on. We did so many cool labs that made the time fly. Her tests are not difficult, but I recommend reading over the chapters in the book to get a better understanding. Our class even went on a few field trips that I actually learned and benefitted from. Take her she's the best.
Microbiology is a hard class itself. You cant say it's easy on this teacher and hard on that teacher. Study hard if you want to get an A in this class. And open your eyes when she discusses. Sometimes, it gets boring and too detailed. But overall, I think she was a a good teacher, enough to learn about microbiology.
Nice class
Great teacher! Personable, kind, and fair. She approaches her subject from a cutting edge platform - touch of quantum physics - exposing us to the places where science and spirituality are finally beginning to overlap. What I've learned in her class has changed my life in a very real and immediate way.
She's hot with her hair down! HAHA! Seriously, she's a good teacher, but her lecture usually is at odds with her exams. You have to study really hard, and know every detail of what she's teaching even though she never mentioned it in class.
She is an amazing professor! One of the best in all community colleges. But she is very hard compare to other professors. But you learn a lot. Some people take this class with an easy teacher and they don't know anything. After her class you come out feeling very strong. Although, to get an A on test I din't sleep 3 night before every exam to study
You'd think spending 3 hours in this class would be a bore, but that couldn't be more wrong. Her labs are very fun and educational, and she is extremely kind nd helpful. Her lectures are well-presented, but certain parts don't mesh with the exams. The good outweighs the bad though, and I highly reccomend her.
great teacher very clear about lectures and lab. she gives out her lecture as notes which is very helpful. i barely studied for this class and i got a B. i really recommend her. very helpful teacher.
Nice professor! No homework, tests are easy if you read the book. 100 multiple choice questions. Lectures on powerpoint, you will learn a lot about the environment and your body. Easy extra credit available. Take her!!
I was looking forward to this class. As I am a nursing major. This professor is unclear, there is a disconnect from lecture and tests. You work ur tail off for extra credit only to find out it is not worth it. I researched on my own. I had to go to my old high school bio teacher for help. She is too excited about passion projects, greening the campus, population control and biotechnology to teach any real science. She lectures from Scientific American magazine... Get a subscription to pass!
This s for long review on 6-2-19. About scientific American lectures. I give her 1 star!
subject is interesting. Class is very hard if you want to pass this class you must come to all classes. Buy her notes from book store and read chapter summeries for test. Second test is the hardest so study well. You can have fun in this class but it takes up a lot of your time. She offers extra credit as well.
I got a B in her class. I am a 4.0 student who received my first B ever. Yes there is extra credit. I did it all. Yes test 2 is hard. I studied the day after I took test 1. Don't rely on her lecture notes and the book only, she expects you to have prior biology knowledge. Outline each chapter from the book, rewrite her PowerPoint notes then as the other reviewer wrote get those magazine articles and fill in the blanks. Only then will you find the answers to the test.
She is a very good professor, and always tries to help but you have to pay attention to the lectures, do the study guides, and study the book a lot to get a good grade. Her class is definitely not for the lazy, don't expect an easy A.
an A is do-able, but it's hard work. the concepts are easy to get but it's just a lot of information you need to know for the test. she's not THAT nice but not really mean either. lectures are boring but labs are fun.
Ms. Polasek is not all there. Honestly. She seems like a sweet lady, but teaching is not something that she was born to do, I would rather have a strict teacher who was all business who I could learn from and become prepared for Anatomy then feel lost like I did. She is like learning from a woman stuck at Woodstock.
Mrs. Polasek is nice and enjoyable, but a hard teacher. She teaches plenty per test. If you do not study you will not pass. A lot to learn, but very interesting.
she is very sweet! her tests are eas, its most of the above and true. i would recommend her to anybody.
Pro. Polasek is the sweetest teacher, and is very good at what she does. You pay to learn about biology and she gives you your moneys worth. This is college people, you are their to learn, and she gives you what you come for. Shes a caring teacher, which is not required of her job, but she offers any assistance above and beyond. She is wonderful.
Professor Polasek is a great teacher, she knows how to make class interesting and helpful. The tests are challenging but she gives a lot of extra credit and labs are fun. A good class, if you study and do all the homework you can get a good grade.
I love this professor. Former Bruin, and someone who has actually worked in the field. She is amazing. Tests are not easy, but not difficult. I listened to lectures, took notes and got an A!! an A is possible. in our class only 4 or 5 others got an A; study and you will do great.
Her personality is nice, she really wants students to care for their health and environment however I don't really like her. She doesn't give study guide and sometimes confuse also not really clear on what she really wants. You have to study read the book read her slides oh she gave extra credit too on Fall 2012
Grade is based on 4 test 75% of your grade & tons of labs 25%. Finishes the whole book most of the study guide isn't on the test.Print out the notes on the portal & read the chapter's review at the end of each ch. in the book. Assigned seats so choose wisely the first day. Good luck.
Professor Polasek is hands down a great teach and enjoyed my time being there. Grading is based mostly on the 4 tests she gives through out the semester and various labs. As long as you follow the reading you should be fine.
The tests have a lot of errors and content not covered, the questions are unclear. You're expected to memorize an 800pg book PLUS extra content from class notes and Lab.The HW packets you turn in every test are full of stuff you will have to find on your own. She's good about answering questions but if you're tying to get an A you WILL SUFFER for it!
This class is about Polasek, not biology. You are there to learn her idea about the world and how it revolves around her. The tests are multiple choice with ambiguous questions, her opinion is usually true- everything else is false. As a professor, very condescending and rolls her eyes if you dare to question her. Worst learning experience ever !!!
I wouldn't take this class again it was too unorganized and the tests don't seem to be related to what we were learning. This made it just ten times more difficult because I still got marked off for things we never covered or heard of!!!!!!
She just reads the slides from powerpoint, you can barely hear her voice. Very unorganized and unclear what she wants. She hates it when people ask question, not helpful at all. She made me hate microbiology.
By far one of the best professors I've had. Yes she reads from the slides but she gives a lot of great examples to back up what she is talking about. She teaches in a way that isn't complicated to understand. She doesn't try to trick you in her exams. As long as you study her notes and read the chapters you'll be fine.
She is very clear on what she wants. She will tell you which material you need to pay more attention and which is not. She respects her students and treats students professionally I would say. She gives extra credit on the exams. Micro is not an easy class, yet it is doable you just need to study.
This teacher is so boring. Her voice is very monotone. The class itself is easy, but tests are so hard. You won't pass without tons of hours of studying all these stupid species. tests are made by the book. 2 lab exams, good if you do the extra credit. 1 bulletin project. overall easy class, have to study hard to get an A.
She is kind!
A few semesters later, I still am very thankful I went into her class. She is a very lovable teacher and great human being. Biology was very intersting because of her class - everything else is all about your effort. Thanks professor!
Nice lady, but very hard grader. Tests are up to 90 questions, and the hw's are in class but they are not so easy. Gives extra credit but its only worth little. Lectures are interesting but long. Have to show up for lectures or you won't understand the exams. Get ready to read.
This lady is so nice. The course itself is easy. If you have any question, she will be so happy to answer. She is organized, and everything in the test comes from the lecture notes HW. Not only that but the HW she assigns is extra credit. You study that and i guarantee that you will pass the course. There are no essays. Just one group project.
Professor Polasek is nice and easy. she works well with students to pass. However, Bio 3 is not a class you can combine with another demanding one. You have to study hard to get good grade. I almost dropped but she encouraged me to persevere. I am grateful I took her class. You will get easy A if you are ready to put in your effort. Take her!
SHE IS SO NICE AND ACCOMMODATING. STUDY HARD, EASY A. TAKE HER
Biology is hard but l recommend this professor because she will work with you to pass. Very caring. No regret. I recommend
NEVER TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. She is egotistical and loves hearing herself talk not interested in helping you. When you ask her a question she snaps at you. Sends people home if they forgot to wear their hair tie, or if they do not bring lab coat. Doesn't care what the reason is such as finances. She is ridiculous.
Altho I had to repeat a Bio class to fulfill the Bio Lab, I think I may have learnt way more here then my old class. Gives extra credit questions in all tests & study guideHW is 5% extra credit also. For tests:Take notes from lecture, Textbook is needed to help with studying as diagrams will be on tests. She reminds u how impo the env is :)
A very good professor, if you love biology and science you want to take her class !
The worst class ever ! Tests are too long.
The subject is really hard and it's a lot of information to learn but she's a really good teacher and she has a lot of experience in the field. Gives extra credit and study guides for her exams. You must study to pass.
If you go to class, do all the assignments you should be fine. She gives lab assignments and quizzes, she gives a lot of extra credit, 4 tests. The first two were hard, make sure you listen to her lectures, read the book, look at the study guide, and do the homework.
The hw is extra credit and is very helpful!! The tests are about 80 questions, but very easy to pass as long as you study. Attend lectures, take notes, read weekly assignments in textbook, do extra credit, study, and you will pass her class. She cares alot about the environment and her students health! Very nice. I wold take her again. I LOVE HER!!
I took the honors section. This was one of the most unorganized and time consuming classes I have ever taken. The dates for assignments constantly changed. The tests were extremely long (100 multiple choice/essay questions), terribly worded, and pretty hard. The professor also constantly made mistakes on the tests, which was very annoying.
The teacher started out being very difficult/confusing in the beginning. Afterwards, she lightened up and became easier to understand. Do not fall back on labs ;find study partners, it is a must! Tests are very hard but get easier, but as long as you pay attention. I recommend her, but it is a very hard class. Only take Honors if you are Bio Major
There is a huge disconnect between tests and lecture. No study guides are offered and you have to read a 300 page long textbook to get a decent grade. Tests are 100 questions long and there are a bunch of mistakes I found there. I did not find her helpful, instead, she made me feel belittled in class. I dont recommend this professor to anyone.
6 exams, with the final being cumulative. requirements for what to study are vague. willing to meet to help you, but still unclear in direction as to what to focus on. really makes you learn the material inside and out. gives lots of extra credit. labs require too much in too short time, BUT only count 25% of grade and don't need right answers
I AM GIVING YOU MY HONEST ADVICE. I TOOK POLASEK FOR BIO 3 AND MICRO 20. SHE IS A GOOD PROFESSOR THAT IS READY TO WORK WITH YOU. NOTE THIS, SCIENCE CLASSES ARE HARD. YOU HAVE TO PUT IN YOUR BEST. TEXT BOOK IS A MUST. SHE GIVES EXTRA CREDITS. DON'T SLACK OFF ON YOUR LABS, THEY WILL BOOST YOUR GRADE. ASK HER ANY UNCLEAR QUESTIONS, I RECOMMEND HER!
Awesome teacher but you must be ready to read
She acts like this is the only class to study for. She expects you to learn a lot in such a short amount of time. 6 exams with up to 50 powerpoint slides each chapter and 4-5 chapters to study for each exam. Her exams are hard and very tricky. 11 pages worth of homework for only 5 extra credit points. Never again.
Loved this course. Great lectures. Professor always provided examples from her experience in the field which made the material easier to remember. Lab is interesting! Go to the SCIENCE LAB!!!! Do your extra activities and you will have EXACTLY what you need for Lab practicals! She is great. I showed up, busted my ass and got an "A". Not impossible.
I found her class challenging. The information is interesting, but she is a tad boring. The material in lecture didn't seem to line up with the exam material. I recommend NOT taking another science course while enrolled in this class. Overall I do believe she wants everyone to do well and you can pass this class with lots of studying.
She is a terrible lecturer. She barely skims the material in class, and to do well you MUST self study the text. As well as other supplemental study. Her tests are pretty basic and do not delve too deeply into the material. She offers many extra credit opportunities and it's not hard to receive a 100+% on her tests. Oh yeah, she's a total healthnut
How can I describe my horrible experience with this class? I had to face the most condescending attitude i have ever received in life! Plus I had to quit my part time job to study at least 5 hours a day for this class that seems to be some sort of level 4 university course. Only thing is the lecture was disorganized. Middle school was more helpful!
Honestly Speaking, she is so passionate about her job! Super nice lady but you need to make sure you're in class. Don't be afraid to ask questions because she will help you. Make sure to do homework and take notes! They help A LOT! Lectures are long but if you get her print outs, they ease note taking!
Pretty easy course. Just read the book and you'll do fine. Make sure you attend all the exams! She is a really nice teacher and Biology was interesting.
I loved her class for my 1st year. It is an easy course if you study, read, and do the work. Her exams are around 50 questions+E.C pts and her final is 100 questions+E.C. Beware of pop quizzes easy tho and make sure you do the hw and study guide they will help your grade a lot! Very kind and helpful teacher!
This professor deserves an award and recognition for going above and beyond her requirements to educate her students. She teaches biology in a way that relates to our lives and wellness. Her lessons and knowledge on PH, nutrition, and water are so valuable. I've seen everything she taught proven to be legit and life changing. TAKE HER CLASS!
Her tests were just too hard and they included a lot of information. I thought the final would be easier than the normal tests but it wasn't. No extra credit!
Hard tests, no extra credit, heavy, boring lectures! Will never take her again.
Micro is tough. I wish her study guides were a bit clearer. They are composed of incomplete, truncated abstract thoughts. That said, she's pretty caring. The class is easy to pass, but I found it hard to do well in. Do the EC HW. It's worth 5% of your test grade. The lectures were interesting with her lab experiences. She's a good person.
TLDR: gives extra credit, read the book, print the notes, not too difficult The subject is hard, not the teacher. Print the notes and follow them in class, she goes through it quickly. Those who complained, didnt. Gives extra credit HW that helps you study. Test questions from the lecture and book. I plan on taking her microbiology class
To sum it up: She is an all around poor teacher. From the beginning, other students knew she was a bad teacher from her messing up the information in class. I tried to give it time before I formed my opinion but when she started to impose her opinions and display pseudoscience within class, I knew she was not up to par. I do not recommend her.
I took her for Micro. As with all science classes, it is detailed and heavy. Nothing is easy when it comes to science!!! If you go into any class with a self-entitled mentality, you're gonna do poorly. She answers any questions. She gives out EC and the HW's are worth points added on to the tests as well!! In life, you gotta work smart!
Professor is informative when it comes to lecture. Make sure to read chapter before attending class. She gives bonus points during lecture if you answer correctly. EXTRA CREDIT points available with homework and lecture. It is not an easy subject overall but her lectures are good.
Professor Polasek is an amazing teacher. She is knowledgeable about the subject and through her experience she is able to relate topics to scenarios she had experienced in her career. Her notes and book are a must to do well in the class. Make sure you use lab time wisely to address any issues you may encounter. She cares about her students.
Worst professor I have had. Exams cover 4 chapters in 2 weeks, are 50+ questions, and you get 30-35mins to take them. When I suggested we should be given the entire 1hr25min lecture to take exams, I was told I could go to the students w/ disabilities office to take exams if I didn't like it. Never have I seen a teacher that out of line to a student
Her power points are solid study guides for the exams(6 total). The lab exams were harder than the lecture exams in my opinion (2 lab exams) she gives a lot of real life examples to relate to the material. Shes a little intimidating but cares about her students doing well. Do the extra credit! It was the deciding factor that gave me the A
It was overall a good class, her stories about the field made it a bit interesting, we had 5 lecture tests and 2 lab ones, the lab exams were way harder than the lecture ones so beware of that, you don't have to buy the book if you dont want to,I think you will do just fine by simply studying from the slides she provides, you also have 2 projects.
Don't buy the book. Study her slides & you will get an A. There are 2 projects that she literally gives zero info about, you have to read your syllabus to understand. She won't remind you of due dates, so keep track. 6 tests but idk if that's her fault or the material is just a lot. Not a great prof. Not nice. But easy class. Take @ your own risk
Her tests are her slideshows literally word for word. She has a big attitude towards students when you ask her questions, its always "Its on the syllabus". 6 tests & 2 group projects which she gives 0 info on. If you take a makeup its not cumulative.
Her tests are not hard, specially because she gives extra credit points. You have 6 tests and each time you turn in a 5-6 page homework(easy) to get a 5% extra credit. Also, you have 2 projects which make up 5% of your total grade. As long as you do the projects( memo and pamphlet) you get full credit100/100. Put in some efforts and A is guarantied
She is a kind person and if you didnt receive the grade you wanted it doesnt mean the professor is mean. She has a good and welcoming attitude you can easily talk to her. I would recommend reading the book if you want an A. But the book itself is very easy and understandable. For the best results go over her slides and read the book, too.
Had to go from live class to online bc of COVID-19. She's really sweet, but it's impossible to fall asleep in her class. Online, she pre-records her lectures & posts everything you need to complete labs. Powerpoints on their own make no sense, which is why you have to listen closely & take really good notes.
Shes a rare gem, she makes microbiology seem like First grade math. Shes good at what she does, her labs are easy, follow instructions and youll get 100% in labs. Her exams are exactly what she teaches in class. You get extra credits from homeworks. If youre taking microbiology, shes the one!
Her exams are literally copy and paste of her lectures. Took this online bc of covid n it wasn't that bad. Homework was an extra 5 pts on the exam. Hard to communicate/ask questions, other than that, she's alright.
She made me love and appreciate Microbiology. It was ashamed we had to switch to online because labs were interesting but I still learned a lot. Her pre-recorded lectures are a bit heavy but she elaborates on certain concepts rather than having you read the slides. Shes sweet and understanding. I liked doing the Memo and Pamphlet project!
The class began w/ students complaining about how bad the first exam questions were that she took that exam off our grades. Now that class is over, its too late to complain again about how horrible the final was. Shes not tech savvy, avoid online. Students found out they were being marked wrong for some questions they actually got right but .....
DO NOT TAKE!!! Micro is a difficult subject. Other science professors speak and explain and explain during classes, making the material understandable and digestible. This professor did not have normal communication with students. She had only 1lesson explaining how to do the lab, then took points out. Her lectures and exams are complete mess.
This class was a lec & lab 100% online. It is very challenging. Especially the tests. Timed tests, strict Proctorio settings, study and prepare. Test are at a specific time, not at your leisure. Assignments, labs, lectures were disorganized and professor made adjustments on the fly. You must be on Zoom to catch them or else. I do like her though!
I actually enjoyed this class, if you aren't someone to ask questions. This isn't your course, she knows when she makes mistakes, if not let her know. As a person she's very sweet. zoom is necessary and a program so you don't cheat. Don't skip class her lectures are very informative. I didn't finish cause I didn't need the course to transfer.
1. Lab and hw are very long, filled with errors and asks q's not covered in book or lectures (which I recorded and reviewed). 2. Goes out of order, blames the study guide that comes with her book, which are also the lecture PPs. 3. Class usually ends late, never early. 4. Packed schedule = no review time 5. No one asks qs bc they're all behind
