Seems great, good sense of humor, just started the class though so we will see....
Horrible teacher, SOOO boring. Teaches directly from her powerpt slides. Multiple choice questions are hard. Says something & then says you dont havta kno it.
Really really boring, too much material, poorly organized powerpt presentations, unreasonable multiple choice and t/f questions
Powerpoint a bit much, but she is willing to repeat anything for clarity. MCQ's and T/F are pretty tough, though. A good amount of information in a short amount of time. But she is new--some people who have been here 30 yrs are MUCH worse..Ive had them
I like her and think she's an interesting professor. Lectures cover A LOT but an hour and 15 minutes goes by fast. Tests are very difficult. Need to know every little detail. Don't miss class.
good professor, can be boring at times. tests are sooo hard . expects you to know every lil detaiil. multiple-multiple choice questions snd T/F. better than some of the other eco prof.
She really loves ecology...alot. And she can keep me awake for an 8am class that is an hour and 15 mins so she has my vote. Lectures are easy to follow, but tests are tricky...beware the multiple-multiple choice(they'll get you everytime). Read the book.
Good teacher, really loves ecology and wants you to love it too. Lectures are well-organized and interesting, tests are tough but not too tough. I really enjoyed this class.
Great teacher! Her powerpoints make taking notes easy, even if her tests casn be challenging. As long as you study and go to class, you should be fine. Making class interesting, as well.
Amazing woman... dedicated to the class, and to her profession. Although her exams can be tricky, she is willing to help in any way she can. Unlike most professors, she likes to get to know the students, and is able to clearly convey information.
Nice woman- very into her field- funny and informative lectures- MUST go to class- quizzes, and tests are ok, but some ?'s are really hard. Spend a lot of time looking over vocab words b/c you have fill in the blank...
She's knowledgable. Tests are sort of hard. Lecture can be boring, notes on screen, easy to understand. Gives extra credit assignments. Nice person though.
Took a potentially interesting subject and KILLED IT. Lectures were HORRID. Blah blah blah blah blah. May be a cure for insomnia. Tests blew, MMC questions benefit those who don't study. And WHAT A HOTTIE
Lectures are a wonderful sedative. The only problem is that tests consist of obscure references mentioned durnig the lectures. Don't buy the book. Ecology should be more interesting, but sadly, it isn't.
Great teacher! One of the most fun classes I've had, even at 8 am. Really into biology, very knowledgable. Must go to class and study for quizzes and exams. Overall great course, did well and loved it.
hated this class. exams don't test your understanding, but your memorization of vocab. lectures very boring. gives good extra credit though.
Nicest professor I've had at UD! It's a bio course so obviously you need to work, but it still wasn't too difficult. Did a good job keeping me somewhat interested in topics I could careless about. Take the Eco Lab with her. She's fun and laid back.
have to do a lot of work for exams, fill in the blanks and M.M.C are hard.. she's interesting and can keep you up at 8 am though.
Very tricky multiple-multiple choice tests. You can know the material and do poorly just because of bad luck.
horrible
Tests can be a pain, multiple multiple choice, diagrams, fill in the blank, true/false, and matching. Expect to have to memorize all the small details because they show up on the exam. She is a decent teacher though.
Exams suck..dont test ur understanding, only luck. dont take her, it will ruin ur GPA if you arent a lucky person. This class should have been easier. lab was easy, what else is new?
She is a wonderful Teacher. You can approach her and she will help you as long as you come with questions. Her tests are hard, mult. mult. choice!!! I learned a lot from this class but did not do well on the tests. You need to be able to remember and study hardcore!
tests are very hard. shes an organized teacher but it isnt worth how hard the tests are. doesnt test understanding but random facts.
Worst teacher ever if you ask for help her advice will be make flash cards and if that doesn't work she'll tell you the same thing again. No EC no curve makes test 3 times as hard as they could be unless a reguired course stay far away from it. And i thought it wouldn't be so bad. Yeah right!
not a bad teacher, but if i have to see another powerpoint i will kill myself. overall a very easy class.
Great teacher, but the tests are rediculously hard. Don't even bother to buy the text book. BUT if you don't have the text, be sure to attend ALL the lectures. Her tests are solely based on the lectures. Just reading the book will only confuse you more. Very nice lady.
She's a great teacher, I'd love to take another class with her if she teaches any others I have to take. M.M.C's are hard, but you can treat them like separate q's that might help. She's funny and has even climbed up on tables to make a point. YAY for Mahaffy!
The website for the textbook is useful, but you don't need to read to book. Go to lecture, tests are 98% from lecture. Tests are hard, but lab is 25% of grade and you should get like a 98 in lab. Lectures are pretty good and she's an incredibly nice person. Overall good prof.
This class was a lot harder than i expected. The notes were very clear but a lot of the information on the tests was not included in the notes. Tests were very hard with lots of random facts thrown in, she also can't keep her facts straight, several discrepancies between notes and test answers...
information seems straightforward at first, but when you get to the tests you'll be surprised. She likes to throw random, obscure facts on the test, makes you choose all the answers that apply on the multiple choice, and is famous for having discrepencies between her notes and the accepted answers
you gotta feel bad for her--she is teaching possibly the most boring topic in the life sciences at 8am. But, she does the best she can all things considered; she's a decent teacher and the exams are fair enough. Class is pretty much a test of endurance as to whether or not you actually go
DAMN SHE IS A NICE PERSON VERY FREINDLY BUT A HORRIBLE PROFESSOR HER EXAMS SUCK!! VERY TRICKY VERY HORRIBLE I WORKED MY ASS OFF STILL GOT A D.. I GOT A "B" IN ORGANIC AND A "D" IN HER CLASS...IT HURTS RAELLY BAD BEING A BIO MAJOR...
I don't recommend her. Her tests are ridiculous, basically they require you to memorize a million terms. She is very nice and her classes are interesting, but it is really hard to get a good grade in her class. Tests come straight from the notes, I stopped reading the book after the first test.
Great professor..IMPOSSIBLE exams. Learned a lot in her class.. but as much as I learned and studied for exams.. still did awful. 1st exam: "there were a lot more good grades than i expected... expect the next to be a lot harder then" I think she loves to see kids to poorly.. avoid her if possibl
attentions all bio majors!Don't take this class until your senior year.It will only bring down your GPA. Her tests are SUPER HARD! it's too much memorization and she has multiple multiple choice. that means...YOU'RE SCREWED! I thought it would be easy but i ended up doing alot more than expected

Multiple multiple choice tests suck. having class at 8am did not help attendence but you really have to work hard to get a good grade.
SHE ROCKS!!!!! Yeah, so multiple multiple choice sux, but still! she's a really nice lady and she'll even climb up on desks to make a point. she's great
good teacher. alittle difficult when ta does the grading. other than that not too bad
She's a good professor and enjoys teaching the subject. Make sure you study the notes before quizzes and tests. Multiple-Multiple choice really does sux but you kind of get used to it by the end of the semester
Ecology is very intersting, but not as easy as most people think. She is a really strange person though and it's sometimes difficult to pay attention to her lectures (all power pt). Her exams unfortunately test for memorization of tons of vocab and almost nothing else.
i love mahaffy! She's sooooo nice! And this class is really interesting, escpecially the occasional useless facts. I think she's really funny. And multiple multiple choice isn't all that bad. The exams are kind of hard though.
not the most exciting subject, but a really terrific prof and extremely enthusiastic about her field. The student's biggest enemy here is the 8am time slot and the coma-inducing subject material
the worst class I've ever taken (in 3 years of college)
Interesting class and she obviously enjoys teaching it. Does a decent job keeping lectures interesting. Tests can get a little tough. Go to class and shouldnt be too bad.
Hilarious prof. Don't buy the book, just go to lecture and you'll be fine on exams. I still can't believe some people did poorly in the class.
Worst teacher ever.......exams are impossible.that multiple multiple choice killed everyone in class...
Dr. Mahaffy is a professor who gives her students a lot of opportunities to be successful, which I think is a good approach. While the multiple multiple choice was a new concept, it's not bad. And I think the grading works in the student's favor. She enjoys teaching and it shows. She's very engaging and approachable. Her lectures are interesting.
tests were a killing !!!! real hard, she made lectures interesting...but she gave out hard work !!!!
She is a very helpful teacher and keeps lectures interesting, her tests are a challenge but at least you know a lot about the subject when your done with the class.
She's a great teacher, HOWEVER, the only thing that really messes everyone up is her MULTIPLE-MULTIPLE CHOICE tests... they are IMPOSSIBLE. Other than that, she's very helpful if u make an attempt to see her and ask questions.
I think she is a GREAT teacher. She always makes things interesting, and adds her sense of humor to it. Mult-Mult choice tests are horrible, but the class itself isn't bad at all.
like her as a teacher. she is helpful outside the class, but her exams are terrible. she says the material on the tests are all from the textbook. NOT true. in fact, if you are memorizing the material it's not enough. you need to understand the applied use of everything (because that's what makes up those darn muliple-multiple choice questions).

Yes, she did give a quiz before thanksgiving big deal, the two lowest quiz grades are dropped! Also, the multiple-multiple choice tests are managable, everyone fails to mention that there are also true/false, fill in the blank, matching, and "misc" sections, not to mention the chance to omit 2 questions from each section!
I feel it's my job to raise Mahaffy's rating; too many people have her listed as difficult/horrible. If you do the work she asks (actually going to class and studying for the quizzes/exams), you'll do fine. She is an engaging and hilarious teacher who really enjoys her job. And mult-mult choice is not that bad. Just stop complaining and study.
awesome lady. probably the best professor i've had at u.d. you'll learn alot in her class, just actually learn the material and study hard for tests and you'll do fine. if you can, take bisc312 with her too.
Always helps out in office hours if you need it. Multiple Multiple is not sooo hard just think of it as 4 true false questions per question each worth .5 points. If you READ the chapters you can ger a B or A. If you dont you cant even pull a B..She actually cares I plan on taking her again!
Mahaffy means well, but she's not a very effective teacher. Also, the lab was absolutely horrible. The material wasn't difficult but my TA was ridiculous. He was never prepared for class and didn't know the material well enough to actually teach. I wouldn't take this teacher again if given the choice.
Good prof. Interesting class if you like ecology. MMC exams aren't as difficult as everyone says. Get old exams if possible. All powerpoint. Cool videos. I'd take her again.
She swears by it but lets not beat around the bush, MMC is HARD. Her exams test you on your memorization of her examples or charts rather than the actual subject material. It takes her 1 and a half days to answer an e-mail. She was only around during office hours 75 % of the time. I'm getting a B in Organic Chem but a D in this class..go figure
This class was impossible. I read all the chapters and went to class and I couldn't get above a low C on the exams and this class is going to be my first grade below a B. Her exams are multiple-multiple choice which are impossible and eve though i understand the material I couldn't do well in the class. I would NEVER recommend taking her class
lectures seem clear and understandable, but the exams will be more difficult than you expect... this is why you do the smart thing and get old exams from people. If you have more than one you can easily get a B+. When asked she said that she approved of students using old exams if they were intellegent enough to get a hold of them.
GET OLD EXAMS- uses the same exact exams again, does not change test at all. Without old exams class is very hard. Her lectures are basic so you have to read the book. Interesting and Entertaining in class though.
I would never take her again. Took her twice and did as bad. Oh I would never take that woman again. She is REALLY friendly. She is awesome for becoming a public speaker. Her lecture is easy to follow but exams are HARDDDDDD.. I earned a solid D in her class.
she is the best bio professor i have had here, and i have had many. her lectures are very clear and she is very helpful. her tests are difficult, so study hard. but you will actually learn from this class. she is awesome!
Don't take the class. If you can switch to a different professor definetely switch. I got a solid D in this class even though I went to every lecture and studied every night. Her test are impossible. This class will your GPA down. She is a great lady and a nice person, but if your in it for the grades... don't take the class/
She is an awesome teacher- really makes the subject matter interesting at 8 AM, which isn't easy. Her stories will entertain- remember stotting, and her mult. mult. choice tests are difficult but get old exams and pay attention and you'll do ok. Its an easy class to pass but a hard class to ace.But I learned alot from her. highly recommended!
This was a very interesting class. However, the exams were very challenging especially if you do not have old exams available. Professor Mahaffy will curve at the end of the semester so that the class average is a 78. Study hard!
Bio majors have to take her in order to graduate. She is a very nice prof. and you'll understand her lectures and notes b/c its all common sense. However, when it comes down to the exams.... whew! she does not come up with the questions. The old exams are helpful. (they might help you out with 9 out of 50 questions.)--easy to pass hard to ace.
Best bio prof I've ever had. She's awesome. Makes the material really interesting. Her exams are absolutely NOT HARD! I don't know what everyone else is talking about. If you study your notes and skim the book (make sure to study diagrams along the way) you can easily get A's on her exams. I never had old exams and I did just fine.
Definitly one of the worst teachers, class is easy and the way she presents the material seems easy. then the exams come. and hits you like a brick. bad professor.
She was a difficult teacher and when the first quiz came around and it had multiple multiple choice questions on it, I thought I was going to have a problem this year. She did make a point to say that with multiple multiple choice you can atleast get partial credit! So don't let that be a reason to not take her class. She is a good professor .
had for 208, got an A. Expecting a C in 302. It is common sense, and doesn't seem hard. But the exams... I don't know where she gets those questions from, sometimes I don't remember covering that AT ALL in lecture/reading it in the book. The answer choices are hard. Do any x-tra credit offered and find old exams... good luck :/
Lynn Mahaffy is super nice and cool...classes are fun and on powerpoint and she goes slow so u can copy. Barely used textbook..actually don't read it cuz it will confound...HOWEVER her tests are 1/3 straight forward factual, 1/3 semi-hard obscurity questions, and 1/3 super vague "creative" GRE-type questions thattestto see if u can think like he
I really liked her, she really made an effort to put things in terms we would understand. She's very helpful and available at office hours. (Where she likes to talk a lot.) The tests are hardish. Multiple Multiple choice sucks but its bearable. I got As on all of my tests.
She's a very nice lady who has ran around the lecture hall in order to make a point. The material is pretty easy and straight foward. She does make you submit answers to q's from videos and papers so go to class! Her tests are killer though b/c some of her q's are gre based. Just ask her for help, go to reviews, study and do the extra credit!
The lecture material is very easy and straight foward! She does give out extra points from papers and videos, which is nice considering the fact that her tests are pretty hard! The trick here is to get a hold of old exams or you won't do that well! Good luck!
Dr. Mahaffy is pretty awesome. Her tests have a tendancy to root out those who can't critically think about the material *sighs, and prays over his final* but she is excellent as a professor and presents the material very well.
horrible. hard, impossible, tests are redic., i went to class EVERY day...read the book--and took readign notes...was not absent for one quiz (or for test) and still only managed a C+. final was a joke it was so hard, same goes for her lab final. good luck to everyone who has to take her.
Very enthusiastic about her field! I really enjoy going to class! Since this class is a major elective, it's very laid back, a lot of videos, and we get to choose what we want to learn about. However, tests are killer b/c she grades harshley so watch out for those, but still an enjoyable class. Take to learn.
VERY HARD, did not like her exam, they are killers she is nice but her exams are just as bad as her quizzes. Get hold of old exams strictly recommended to pass the class…good luck
This is not an easy class. I took the hardest exam of my life in this class. You MUST know the material inside and out. Read the book. If you miss class, you fall behind. However, she's nice, and willing to help. I would not take this class with her
Prof Mahaffy is probably the best teacher I've had at UD so far. Yes, her tests are extremely difficult but she REALLY loves bio and wants us to love it too. I had her at 9 in the morning and she is so animated & enthusiastic. Def not an easy "A" but it is not impossible either. I never had old exams and I've gotten 95s on her test. GO TO CLASS!
Her tests are really hard and you need to start studying a couple of nights prior to the exam. However, she is pretty nice (funny too) and she loves the subject. She is willing to help. Beware of the multi-multi choice and make sure you know the vocab. Study hard and you will be fine!
Definitely my favorite professor so far at UD. Very enthusiastic and keeps class interesting. The multiple choice section of the test is tricky, but the rest isn't too bad. Not an easy class, but make sure you study the notes and the book (more emphasis on the notes), and you'll get an A
i loved her class. she is such a good professor. very helpful when you go to office hours. shows movie clips in class, not boring at all. tests are a little tricky at first, but once you understand her grading, easy to pass. takes a bunch of quizes and drops the lowest 3 or 5. take her class!
Lectures are good, she explains everything well and uses powerpoints that she puts on webct (partial only) that you can fill in during class. Tests are really hard, all multiple choice but very tricky, hardly any straight memorization questions. Overall, a great professor but hard to get an A (or B)in the class.
Great professor!!! Very enthusiastic and funny. She is very approachable and will help you with anything. She really wants to see her students do well. Probably the best teacher I've ever had. Tests are pretty challenging, but if you study hard, you will do well. GO TO CLASS!!! You won't do well if you don't attend the lectures.
She is one of the BEST biology professors at UD. She is brilliant and makes lectures interesting. Really funny in lecture too! Her tests are very difficult tho and require studying for more than the night before. If you want to actually learn, take Mahaffy!!!
One of the absolute worst teachers I think I have ever had. Her tests are impossible I love Biology well atleast I thought I did. It sucks to know that if I wanted to continue Bio I would have to deal with people like LAM. I'm serious her powerpoints make no sense there is no thread to keep track. THUMBS DOWN MAHAFF. Get through it or get out!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. She is very deceiving as a teacher. You take it thinking it's an easier elective, and then during class it kind of is (she just goes over her powerpoints and shows videes), but the tests are incredibly difficult and specific, and are based on her lectures rather than any kind of textbook. Definitely would not recommend.
This is not a class for the faint of heart, but since every Bio major has to take it, you either work your tail off for a decent grade or whine the whole semester about how hard her tests are. Read the book, take good notes, and you can get at least a B on most of the tests. Offers some extra credit which is good, and she's really nice and helpful.
Mahaffy is an amazing teacher! She is really funny and interesting in her lectures, she makes biology fun. She shares her love of biology with the entire class. Her tests are hard and somewhat tricky but if you take extra notes in her lecture that may not be on her powerpoint slides it will really help. Definitely take her for 208! Lab is fun too.
AWESOME professor. She made most classes interesting, and I've never been a big bio fan. Posts fill in the blank powerpoint outline online for easier note taking during class. Tests are trick (mulitple-multiple) choice but if you take notes and read the book its easy to get a B. If you have to take this class, THIS IS THE PROFESSOR YOU WANT!
REALLY nice teacher. She cares about her students and is a no b.s. teacher. If u dont need to know something, she will tell u. She relates everything to the real world. You MUST go to class because she hates the textbook and uses it only for pictures. Her tests are pretty hard though. Best option for 208.
This class is not easy, but it is manageable as long as you study hard and read the book. It is a requirement for BIO so suck it up and try your best. BTW, A's and B's are definitely possible!
Others have said it and it's true: lecture is essential, text is a reference. Makes class very interesting early in the morning by relating bio to everyday life, incredibly enthusiastic fever that you will catch; quit being embarrassed that you look forward to class and enjoy it. Tests hurt, be sure to take the quizzes seriously and they will help.
Good professor. Tests are hard, but it makes you learn the material really well. Definitely study for quizzes. And study notes...not just the one's posted on the website. Attend lectures and ask questions and you'll be fine. She really seems to want everyone to pass.
i was amazed by the amount of material i learned in this class. study from old exams and online textbook quizzes, but learn the concepts and don't just memorize. the final exam was a complete joke that came from nowhere, but there was a huge curve. this course was HARD, but i got an A with a lot of work (and a C on the first exam).
She's a good professor, pretty animated and a familiar speaker. She uses a lot of examples, which is helpful considering the material. Her exams are tricky, but she curves.
WORST class I have taken here at UD. She is a terrible professor and is not approachable. Her exams are not easy.. even after reading the entire text book. This class should not be mandatory for biology majors.
I LOVE THIS CLASS! Even for an 8am, I never want to miss it. It's so interesting and Mahaffy does a great job at teaching it. Exams can get tricky but after the first exam you get used to her exam style, so B's aren't impossible at all! She gives examples in lecture and is very helpful if you go to her for clarification! LOVED ITTTT!!
GREAT Professor! Wish I could have her for 208. Take tests VERY seriously, a lot of tricky questions. Lectures are a must to do well, take quizzes seriously. Very animated and has great personality and wants her class to do well. Curves at end of class
I studied myself silly for this class and still literally scraped a C. I went into exams understanding her notes completely... came out highly disappointed. If you don't know the magic trick to studying for her exams.. to be blunt: you're out of luck. Personally, an incredibly frustrating experience. She is a nice person at least.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! tests are extremely hard, quizzes are also hard, no room for mistakes. Studied so hard and never got better than a C on a test. Take another professor if possible!
Loved this professor. Had her last semester and wish I could have taken her for 208 as well. Tests are confusing but you do better on them because the partial credit, never got below an 80%. go to class! read the text and study hard it will pay off. such a sweet enthusiastic teacher.
If you don't have her old exams, you're pretty much out of luck. Her exams are very challenging, and even if you know the material by heart she still manages to trick you on a good number of questions. You really just have to try to get through this class with minimal damage to your GPA if you're required to take it.
Very hard class. You need to study concepts a lot so read the book it's helpful. Go to her office also and email her questions because she really does help. I highly recommend reading the text and understanding it. She is a great person though and really funny. Lectures are interesting.
She was easy to follow, and the information in the textbook was cake. Her multiple choice questions just a bit manipulative and she throws in quite a bit of math. I noticed a calc related question in the first exam asking for the limit of exponential growth, which she didn't cover in class; she tends to put graphs w/o labeled axis on exams well
Amazing teacher, her tests can be tricky if you don't study. Go to lecture it's really intresting she keeps things moving, and take the assignments she gives you seriously. Do this and ther's no reason why you can't get a B
Professor Mahaffy is a good teacher. She teaches her subjects well, and shes sometimes funny. Sometimes goes a bit too fast in class. Don't miss any lectures, you'll be hella far behind in class. test are EXTREMELY hard. the only downside to her class. Multiple-multiple choice rarely helps you; you're bound to get answers wrong in the exam.
The class is pretty difficult, especially the tests, her questions are extremely annoying and she basically has it so that 3 answers are basically almost correct but only one answer is 100% on the spot. It didn't help that I had 4 exams in 2 days when I too her final, so I did poorly. She's interesting to listen to and pretty nice person.
She is a very helpful teacher and eager to help even during office hours. Her tests are very difficult and they killed my grade.
She is clear and easy to understand during lecture. But come test time, her questions look as though they have multiple answers. Not sure where she gets her test ? from, maybe a test bank from the textbook. All MC tests and three regular 50? and final had 100 (i think) and there are short quizzes in class about 5 total, which help the grade a littl
Her tests are hard, but she curves and gives out extra credit, little quizzes and other assignments that will help you a little bit. Aside from that, she is very clear and engaging! I would still recommend her!
you would think ecology would be an easy subject, but it is not. Mahaffy is very enthusiastic and a great teacher, but she purposely makes her exams harder then they need to be. I studied for weeks in advanced and got Bs. She does hand out a few points for quizs and homework, but not enough to really bring up your grade.
Mahaffy is a really interesting and engaging teacher. Her lectures keep you awake and she if very passioante. Exams are hard- must study many days in advance to know info enough to do well! Not an easy class but deff one of the better bio208 professors! text book is very helpful to use along w lecture notes
Prof Mahaffy is a really good professor and really loves what she's teaching. Her lectures are genuinely clear and she wants everyone to understand what she is talking about. Despite this, her exams are incredibly hard. Multiple-Multiple choice was the death of me. I never bothered with the textbook. Shouldn't have even bought it.
Material is sort of boring but Professor Mahaffy is a knowledgeable and interesting speaker and I was never bored to death listening to her. Textbook is not needed. Go to class and bring you laptop to take notes on her powerpoints (she puts incomplete versions on sakai). Do all the blogs for easy points. Old tests might be helpful but not necessary
This class is interesting and a good senior elective. Class is mandatory because like 302 she only post abb. power points. Gives cheat sheets for tests but still makes them hard enough that averages are still in the 70s (Typical Mahaffy tests- tricky). A lot of extra work to bring up your grade. Great for those who care about ecological issues!
this class is nothing but memorization memorization memorization. go to class and review the material over and over everyday its the only way you're going to do well is if you know the stuff
Mahaffy def knows her stuff & uses good examples. I really enjoy Ecology, but the tests threw me for a loop. I would think I was ready and receive grades in the 80's. She will curve but someone keeps acing them so it hasn't helped. In short the tests are hard but the class is cool & Mahaffy is nice, down to earth, reasonable and easily understood.
Great prof. Interestng, helpful, and animated. Gives sakai assignments, quizzes, second chances at quizzes with groups, and a curve. Only bad things about her class are that it's early in the morning and the tricky exams. The material isn't hard to grasp. I got a B in the class, but if I actually gave it my 110%, probably could have done better.
Nice, enthusiastic teacher which makes class interesting. However, hardest teacher ever! Do NOTTTT take unless you want to work your butt off for a low grade. Her tests ALWAYS cover material that she never explained to the class but you are just supposed to understand. Even past tests can't prepare you for an exam. Her tests are impossible!
DO NOT TAKE!!!!! Class is WAY too hard. No amount of studying will equip you for her tests. She is a great person, maybe even teaching wise, but her tests are absolutely impossible and the class average was always below an eighty. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TAKE YOU WILL FAIL! and if you have to...good luck is all i can say
Mahaffy is a cool teacher. Even though it was an 8am, class was always interesting. Do not underestimate it, however. The tests are challenging and you need to attend lecture and take notes on the examples she gives. Take detailed notes (she provides slides online as well) and prepare in advance for the tests and you should be fine.
Really awesome person and I really liked this lab, but I felt she was a VERY subjective grader and often misleading. For example, she would give us suggestions to change in our paper, and when we changed them, she would take off points.
fun, exciting, energetic, and easy exams.
Professor Mahaffy is an awesome lady. She is understandable, down to earth, and easy going, however if you are taking 207 prepare for a lot of textbook reading. She only teaches the very basics in class, but tests are not too difficult. If you have any interest in Bio at all you should do fine.
Awesome professor! Very clear and the tests are somewhat challenging but not hard. The class is well organized. The tests are multiple multiple choice but she gives partial credit.
Even though her class was at 8am I only ever missed it twice. She's really engaging and an awesome professor. Definitely go to class for the notes. However, her exams are pretty challenging- the avg was always around a 72. You'll definitely feel as though you mastered the material though!
She's a nice lady but her class is hard and not very interesting. Tests are horrible! Avoid her at all costs!!!
easy B but a TOUGH A. If you are willing to give up the easy A for a really fun class then definitely take this course. Field trips outdoors almost every week, you get to walk around outside at many state parks and trips always end with a Wawa stop. lab reports due each week but they arent too bad once you get the hang of it. Lab final at the end.
Mahaffy definitely knows her stuff but her exams are impossible. There are other grades - weekly blogs, reading quizzes, but those grades are not enough to pull grade up if needed. I would recommend taking this class senior year if you can. Did not use the text book at all. There was NO curve in the class.
Class was interesting, but tests were impossible. Attendance is mandatory if you want to pass this class. Take extremely detailed notes. She provides powerpoints online but leaves blanks that you need to fill out in class. Study way in advanced for the tests. There are weekly blogs and quizzes that were easy and not very time consuming.
She's enthusiastic and makes the class bearable at 8 AM. Material's pretty straightforward but exams are tough even if you study. Textbook isn't really used. Weekly blogs and occasional quizzes on videos or articles. Don't just use powerpoints to study. They're not complete when she posts them. You need to go to class to fill in the missing info.
The key to this class is GETTING PRACTICE EXAMS. She does repeat questions from old exams. The exams are extremely hard but you can manage them if you go to every class take detailed notes and get old exams. Before every exam I memorize my notes and practice exams and my exam score average is an 80. Extra points for blogs and quizzes that are nice.
My biggest advice for this class is to make a vocab list for each exam. A huge portion of the tests has to do with knowing the vocab. There is a section on each exam with definitions/examples and you are required to write in the word w/ no word bank there's also a similar section with a word bank. Keep the lists for the final!
Not very good at writing exam questions. They are vague, long winded, misleading, and often not even about material specifically covered in lecture or the textbook. Fortunately, she's enthusiastic; Always cracking wise and telling jokes to keep your attention. It's a shame you'll end up feeling cheated after you take one of her monstrosities.
Took this class as an elective for my minor because I thought it would be interesting (it was). The textbook talks about some cool topics and there is also another easy read that is required. Tests are pretty impossible since the questions are worded so weird. Quizzes are done after reading long papers, also impossible. i don't recommend.
Having done great in a previous ecology course, I wasn't all that worried. Boy was I wrong. Her exams are terrible. You really need to know your stuff, and even if you do, you can still do terrible. She even told me that most answers on her exams could be right if you create the right situation. Just study and use your brain and you'll be fine.
Mahaffy is an enthusiastic professor but when it comes to her exams shes impossible. We all know ecology could be an easy class but she is trying to make it a graduate level type of course. Good luck! The average was always in the 70's never above it. Wish it wasn't required for my major. I studied and studied cant grasp her exams at all!
Dr. Mahaffy is a great lecturer. She knows how to keep you paying attention and her witty comments make lecture entertaining. Her exams are very challenging. She views a good question as one that knowledge and rational thinking need to be applied to be correct, which requires a LOT of studying- not memorizing. Office hours encouraged- she's great
She's everything you'd want in a professor, minus the fact that she is an extremely tough grader. This class is no joke. If you skip, you're gonna have a hard time. Essentials for passing Mahaffy's class: TAKE NOTES AND STUDY. Her tests are extremely tricky, and are mainly on lecturebook material. 3 tests, 7 quizzes and none are very easy.
This class and the content are very interesting. Mahaffy, however, is not a professor who I would recommend. There is a TON of material on each exam and she gives no study guides or practice tests to direct your studying. Her tests are such that I feel like I can totally understand the material and still not do well. She can also be rude at times.
This class really sneaks up & bites you in the ass. You go in thinking, "Oh, environmental bio, this'll be a lovely stroll in the park" WRONG! The class material is very interesting, but Mahaffy's tests are the hardest I've ever taken. Even with extensive notes & rereading things I still had a very tough time with the exams. Do NOT take it lightly.
Mahaffy really knows her stuff. If you like the topic, she's great. However, beware of the tests. Everything she says in lecture is fair game and she will use that against you. Write down everything she says, memorize and understand it and you can get an A. By the end of the semester I was afraid to leave class to even to pee.
I've taken every single Mahaffy class out there. She is an absolutely amazing professor who I highly recommend. She lives up to her reputation of being an tough grader but if you go to her office hours and get to know her she's always willing to help you out. Make friends to study with for sure. Overall, take her classes, they're great.
Her class was very interesting and she was helpful. Be aware that the test questions often involve a lot of thinking, not straight definitions.
Dr. Mahaffy is a really helpful person when you go to her, she's very understanding and always willing to accommodate. However, this class is the hardest class that I have ever taken. Her exams are unpredictable, but she makes up for it with other grade portions like quizzes and lab participation. Definitely do the extra credit!
Mahaffy is a really cool professor. Super nice and engaging, class was always entertaining. However, he tests are ridiculously hard. She makes the exams much harder than what they need to be and purposely tries to trick you it seems. She does reuse old exams so try and get a hold of one if you can.
Okay so,.... Mahaffy's classes are generally tough. The lab for this class is actually pretty cool one you get past the smell and urge to gag. Her lectures were long, but she knows what she's talking about and so she keeps them interesting and interactive. Exams are nearly impossible, but she makes up for it with EASY extra credit and quizzes.
Her lectures are critical, but not mandatory. She posts semi-filled in power points, so you have to go to class to fill them in. She is entertaining to listen to and is a great lecturer. I was never bored in class. Her exams are brutal because they are very detail-oriented. Flash cards will be your best friend for this class.
Not too bad. Tests are unnecessarily difficult, but still manageable. Homeworks, blogs entries, and clicker points boost your grade. You can find some old test answers on quizlet which sometimes reappear in new exams. I didn't mind this class. You need to go to class in order to fill in the notes.
Interesting speaker, enough that you wont go online and shop around. Unless you're not a true fan of biology.
Dr. Mahaffy really makes you work to get a good grade in her class. She gives lots of quizzes (every day, if you take it in summer session) and her exams are some of the hardest I've taken in college. However, she really cares about her students and is very accessible outside of class. It was a hard class but I'd probably take her again.
She's an okay professor but her exams are not easy for general ecology (and she knows it). If you need to take this course PUT IN THE TIME. You truly need to understand the concepts in order to pass the exams. 3 exams with a cumulative final. Weekly web forums, 4-5 online quizzes as well as 7 paper quizzes. GO TO CLASS to fill in slides for notes
OK SO, I took Mahaffy for bisc302 & hated her exams but thought she was a sweet person. Super nice, tries to be funny, love her. So I took her field ecology lab this semester. This class is the only one I look forward to each week. Write ups are easy but suck if you're like me & save em til the night before lab. Lab usually lasts 2 hrs. TAKE IT!!!!
She has some amazing ability to drag out lectures that could be completed in 20 minutes to an hour and 15 mins. I would say she speaks like she's trying to reach a minimum word requirement for a paper. Exams are much harder than they need to be with applied knowledge questions, so you really need to know your stuff to do well.
I've had Mahaffy for 5 classes and loved her for every single one! Her intro class was very specific and hard but she really made you learn the material. 312 is one of the best classes I've taken but the final is hard. She really cares for her students and enjoys her subject material. She has taught me so much and I truly respect her as a teacher.
She is a great professor and very kind when you go see her for office hours. I was very interested in the material given but I was frustrated cause I did badly on the exams. All I gotta say is, it's a big help if you know someone who took the class before you.. they can tell you wassup.
DON'T JUST MEMORIZE DEFINITIONS! you have to actually understand real world applications. Her exams are in depth and only ask about real world applications of the topics she teaches in class, not the book definition. You don't need to read much but you MUST go to lectures and take detailed notes. The "side-note" examples she gives, are on the exam.
She is a great teacher. Her tests, however, are extremely hard, you need to have a very good understanding of the material. The questions are extremely tricky and confusing- take your time and analyze the questions but do not overthink. I studied a lot for the exam and received high 70s on all of them and ended with a B-.
Her ecology class was not as easy as I thought. After getting an A in all previous biology classes, I got a lower grade in this one. Her exams are challenging, especially the final, and you really have to note everything she says in class that isn't on the slides. I also recommend not rushing through the homework and use it to really learn.
we were remote for half the semester so we missed out on the fun labs Weekly lab reports due, but they will be graded to a T so beware. You will have to lead a class discussion on an assigned paper, also present/create a short blog for a paper of your choice Final is hard and based off labs, even the ones you didn't have to do.
DO TAKE ECOLOGY WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!!! IF U CAN ..... find someone else. She makes everything harder than it actually is. Over complicated everything. If your not doing well in the course , she will encourage u to give up instead of giving u advice to do better and encouraging you. She is friendly though but very annoying.
10/10 was an awful experience. Had their classes for three semesters now (b/c I needed them) but if you do not need these classes, DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THEIR CLASS. Shows no mercy when grading, goes on tangents about nonsense during class time, and the tests are very difficult. If you basically do not marry this course, you will not pass.
Professor Mahaffy is very nice and if you watch her lecture videos and take very specific notes, you will do well on the lecture quizzes/tests. HOWEVER she does have "papers" for you to read with quizzes, these are very difficult and confusing across the board for everyone. A lot of work for a Summer course I would opt for fall or spring.
I found this ecology very easy. All the exam questions were examples that she explained in class so as long as you take detailed notes on her lectures ( I mean every example she explains) you shouldn't have an difficulty in this class. Don't just memorize definitions because she uses application questions on the exams.
I actually don't think I have had a worse professor at this school. She designs the class to set you up for failure and was surprised when the class average on an exam was a passing grade. The only thing about her that makes things better is that there are two extra credit assignments. All I know is a lot of kids need to retake this course.
She is the worst professor Ive ever had at UD. I purposely asked not to have her and still got her just for her to fail me my graduating semester. When I asked how to improve she said I didnt put effort and gave no suggestions. If you arent in class then you wont have luck with the exams but even going I didnt have luck with the exams.
Worst professor ever. She over complicates the exams even tho I understood the material I did horrible. DO NOT RECOMMEND at all
Not the best teacher. You have to watch lectures on your own time and show up to "class" to take a quiz for 5 minutes then leave. You don't really know your true grade until the final grades are posted. Awful teacher and would not recommend.
Horrible professor makes you watch pre-recorded lectures on your own time and uses class time for 5 min timed quizzes and that's it. Told students if their grade was too low to just drop the class and give up. Locked the grades and showed us them once before locking it again. Exam questions super specific and very confusing to understand.
Yeah uhhh she's the worst prof I have had my entire college career. She tried her best to make ecology a difficult course when it is the most straightforward thing since biology. If you got an A in biology have fun getting a B or B- in her ecology class. The class average which she said was good was a 64%!!!
Don't take this class with Mahaffy. Took it as an elective for my bio minor assuming it would be a reasonable level of difficulty. I was very capable of understanding the matierial in this course but exams were extremely unfair and overcomplicated. Only class in college besides physics 2 that I haven't gotten an A in.
Don't take this class if you don't have to. Exams have fill in the blanks with no word bank or study guide to even help you study. Horrible class to take online. Lecture time is used only for canvas quizzes (you have to get on zoom) and you have avg 50 min pre lecture vids with terrible quality before each class. HW is fair but likely not on exams
Worst professor I have had at this university. Am usually an A/B range student and this was the first class that I had to worry about passing. Exams are impossible and asks you the most random questions that arent in lecture. Highly recommend taking another class if it isn't required.
After taking multiple courses with Dr. Mahaffy I can say this, her classes can be very frustrating. She is a professor who gives difficult work. A C is technically an average grade, so if you don't put in above average work, you'll likely get around a C. Other than that, she's a nice, inquisitive professor who I believe can be underappreciated.
I seriously don't understand how this professor even has a job. She lied to the class and said homework questions wouldn't be fair game on exams and they were. Her exams were nothing like lecture, the class average was a F on the first exam and she cancelled office hours after the first exam so students wouldn't come to her with questions.
There is a natural ability with some professors to create tricky and thought out questions based off of minimal testable material.Imagine this is an ecology question but its simplified, these will be like your exam questions. Some months have eight letters in their name, whereas others have five. How many have three? - all of them do
Prof. Mahaffy is a great lecturer however, if you miss even 1 class your grade will suffer. There is no opportunity to get the info so I would recommend making a friend. As long as you take good notes and study flashcards, you should pass however, her exams are tough and there are no practice problems provided. Material was interesting/enjoyable.
Dr. Mahaffy is such a good professor. She is very passionate and knowledgable about the subjects she teaches. She is a tough grader, but as long as you study her slide presentations you will do well. Great person to talk to if you are interested in organismal biology or ecology as a future career.
I would say she is a pretty nice professor, but the exam is extremely hard! She never provided the practice exam. Although, she said the attendance is not require but if you miss the only way is find your classmate to get the note. And the exam includes a lot of detail things for well prepare you have to memorize a lot.
She is a great lecturer, however if you want to pass it is crucial that you go to class because she won't post notes. Exams are fair, but you do need to spend a lot of time studying and structure your own in-depth questions and practice problems in order to study in a way to retain the most information. If you put in the work you should be okay!
Lynn Mahaffy is not an easy professor to take by any means, but she is fair and an understanding person. She takes her courses seriously and you she expects the same of her students. There is no easy A in any of her classes, but she will be up front and clear about her expectations for what is expected of an A student.
The professor gave quizzes every single class and gave so much material shortly before exams. No study guides, no practice questions, and no posted lectures.
Content learning was very rushed. No ud capture videos posted, no full lecture notes posted. If you miss a class your grade will suffer. Content was extremely heavy and rushed, and not taught well.
I am a good student and never skip class. Her notes are difficult to follow along with, the powerpoints posted are not the same as what she goes over.Expect to have a quiz or exam every single class period. She handed out a quiz with only 3 minutes to spare, many people didn't get the quiz passed to them until class time ended. Tough quizzes & Exams.
She writes her exams like riddles. I showed her questions to grad students and professors, who agreed her questions are confusing. Assigns a lot of homework. A student of her's was having technical difficulties with doing the homework and she told her to drop the class. One of the worst professors, I actively tell people to not take her clases.
She is the worst professor i've had. you will have quizzes every single class without fail. Exams are horrible Every question is super specific and asked weird. Expect to be tested on content you haven't been taught also. Avoid this class, you will have to self teach you self lots of material. The material isn't hard, she makes it hard. Avoid!
It seems as if Mahaffy does not want her students to succeed. The only resource she will ever provide you with is barebone slides. No study guide, no practice exams, nothing. Her exams are brutal, and with no study guide, you spend way too much time on a topic only to find out it is barely covered.
DONT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH MAHAFFY. Theirs either a lecture quiz or a reading quiz every other class. The exam questions don't make any sense and she does fill in the blank for random stuff you study from. She doesn't post the filled-in lecture notes and doesn't use UD capture so if you don't go to class then you won't have the notes so make friend
She wants students who don't attend lectures to fail. Which i get, but in the end it hurts everyone. There is NO support outside of lectures, which to be fair to she is a fantastic lecturer. You can't get all the info you need with just lectures. If she would at least give us the pictures on the slides everyone would do so much better.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR.....unless you love ecology. If your taking this class just for bio credits or a requirement don't do it. Exams are terrible. She gives you a super long scenario and even the multiple choice don't even help. She also includes fill-in the blank with difficult terminology and no word bank...NO WORD BANK.
Professor Mahaffy is very caring and nice, though personally I felt her lectures were boring at times and she really just talks the whole time, it's overall not a bad class to take and she's a decent teacher.
She seems like a nice lady but this was the hardest class i've ever taken. The main issue I have with this class is how confusing and misleading the test questions are its almost like she wants to trick us. It seems like no matter how much you study for her tests its hard to do well. Avoid taking a class with her if you can.
Quizzes every class, doesn't post her notes, no study guide or helpful material. If you miss class, your grade will drop. Hardest tests i have ever taken, questions are expertly applied with tricky wording. She will test you on the most specific content you wouldn't even think to study. I am a good student, my recommendation would be DO NOT TAKE!
I really liked Mahaffy, her lectures were really interesting and shes very entertaining and funny. Sadly, in order to get even a decent grade you have to attend and take good notes. Unfortunately it does feel like no matter how hard you try it is near impossible to get an A, as I'm not sure how much more effort I could have put into this course.
Only take this course if you HAVE to, or if you really really really love ecology. You have to attend lecture because she only posts partially filled power points, and you have to take really good notes. The homework can be time consuming and doesn't align with the lecture material. The exams are extremely difficult and require alottt of studying.
Try to take another professor! There is a quiz nearly every class with no notes available. Exams are very difficult and the class average was very poor. No curving.
The worst proffesor I have ever had at UD. Its like she wants her students to fail. She writes her exams like riddles and they are impossible to do good on. Also her multiple choice questions have multiple answers and she takes off points if you don't circle all of the right answers. Plus there is no way to pass class even if you miss one lecture
Take someone else if you can, the questions on her tests are very tricky and make no sense. She gives quizzes every class asking super specific questions. If you miss one lecture you will be very behind and she dosnt post notes or provide any sort of study guide.
Attended every lecture + lab, studied hours outside of class daily, turned in all assignments, and still was not able to get a grade I can use for my application (C). The most frustrating and difficult class I have ever taken at a University, average students will do poorly. No test curves + no slides posted - if you miss a class you're screwed!
Funny and the lectures are entertaining BUT difficult to succeed; You can't miss ONE day or done. NO posted notes + NO practice exams, you could only trust her words. exams were tricky and the mc section was choose all that apply. the readings were lengthy and not useful. glad i took this in summer bc its impossible to balance with other classes.
Tough class with frequent quizzes and exams that require extensive self-study. The professor provides minimal support, but tools like ChatGPT, Quizard and unstuck AI can help fill the gaps.
a former student of hers had a lot of negative feedback about her, i also have encountered her exam which seems to be her weak point as she tricks student with her questions, thanks for reading.
I think Mahaffy gets a bad rap because people who aren't interested in what she is teaching take her classes and then complain about it. She is an amazing professor who gives interesting lectures and fair tests that are hard if you don't take the time to take proper notes and study. If this class isn't required, only take if you love ecology
best review-if you don't like the style of other profs, mahaffy might be a nice fresh start for you. her class is very laid back and enjoyable to attend, if you miss a class you'll be strugglin but not impossible to recover. exams are kinda insane but quizlet has questions from past exams and if you're a seasoned bio major the answers are obvious.
You have a quiz every class, and you get little help or resources. They don't want to provide the pictures or all the info that they show in their lectures. You can't miss a day as there are no published notes or recordings to go based off. Exams are also not easy. The material isn't hard, but the professor makes it so difficult for no reason.
Her exams are really hard for no reason. It includes matching, multiple multiple choice, fill in the blanks. The way she writes the questions are very confusing. Her lectures are long but she goes through them fairly fast. Her lecture slides on canvas are blank so you can't even go back and study them, it's like she wants her students to fail :(
Be ready to learn by yourself
She drives me crazy and makes an introductory bio class 10 times harder than it needs to be. She told a student she puts trick questions on her exams to filter out the top of the class from the mediocre. I shouldn't be doing better in organic chemistry than introductory bio. entire exam is multi-select and poorly worded questions. so many quizzes.
I am a pre-medicine, biology major and this class was so hard for no reason. I got a 5 on AP BIO, A's in every other bio and chem course. She is overall abrasive, unprofessional, and not a good teacher. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! The only people that like her: 1) Are in love with ecology or 2) this class is their main focus and study every day
like oh my god d1 rage baiter such a waste of my time shes an awful person
Genuinely the hardest class I've ever taken, and I'm a neuroscience major. Do not take this class with her. I've gotten As in every bio class in my life and a 5 on AP Bio, and I'm currently sitting at a D+ in this class. Doesn't post any material from class. Exams are multiple-select multiple choice and impossible to understand.
Dr. Mahaffy is super nice engaging professor and you will learn a lot, BUT if you no-show class you WILL fail. Her exams are EVIL and if you don't know anything and everything about a topic that's what will be tested. You get very limited materials outside of class so you have to use your notes from in class to expand upon what you wrote down.
This lady was actually such a waste of my time. I also took Alenka which if you don't know has a 2.3 on here and she was a breeze compared to mahaffy. The content is literally not even hard in the slightest but her exams are absolutely ridiculous. All of her questions are the most niche trick questions and she's also just a rude and entitled person
Quite literally the worst prof I've had in my life. Her goal is to fail each student who isn't a natural born savant at the course content. Legit told us she puts trick questions to filter out the top 1% from everybody else. Mahaffy, if you're reading this, you need to get a grip and realize that your students have other classes to worry about too.
She is definitely funny and gives interesting lectures. Content is specific and tests are insanely unfair and difficult. Must attend every lecture a for quizzes and provides 0 materials. AVOID!!!! i'm a good student and seriously struggled.
This class was by far the toughest class I've taken in my college career as a senior. Genuinely spent hours studying for her exams and it didn't help in the slightest. Her questions on her quiz's and exams are basically riddles you need to figure out. The material itself isn't hard but the way the questions are worded make them nearly impossible.
Gives you 0 material. Slides are fill in the blank and very simple, but exams are ridiculously detailed. No study guide for exams. She just talks. Im supposed to have a PhD in bio just to pass her exams. Very knowledgeable, but such a simple course is not worth the stress. so many quizzes that weight a lot. If you take her, office hours may help.
