Makes a 100 class feel like a 400 class. Have more reading in her class than almost all my other classes combined. Dull, annoying voice, and unfun professor. If you want to slack, get a different instructor.
This class is so boring. It is merely useless facts and she requires tons of reading.

This class is very boring and hard to drag yourself out of bed to go to. But if you go to class every day and take notes the tests arent too bad. But i wouldnt suggest reading the book, just use her study guide and search for the terms/people.
All I can say is this should be called NAPPING 131, hardly informative.
Easy as hell class. She is very clear and what she says in class is on the test. so if you go to class, you'll do well on the tests. should be an easy A for anyone who takes it. (dont really ever need to read the book--except for artist bios.)
I really enjoyed this class. As long as you dont sleep and pay attention to what shes talking about in class, the tests are super easy. You just need to read about the paintings and artist bios. in the book. Easy 'A'

Don't buy the book. It is a waste of your money. Everything that you need to know is talked about during class. So if you pay attention during class, you will be fine.
The most boring class I've ever had. She says attendance is mandatory but it doens't count on your grade. Random quizzes and tests are easy but cover a lot of material on each test, like 7 chapters.
Talk about boring.... And its really annoying to listen to her lecture. She says she has a cold.. but her voice is always like that (scratchy).

Her voice is sooo annoying.Class is boring as hell.Don't read the book or it will give you too much information.Going to class will help your grade a ton because of random quizzes that she gives.
Not an easy class to begin with,but she gives you the materials you need to muddle your way through centuries of art history. She is clearly passionate about the subject and easy to approach. Figure out her testing style and you will do well.STUDY hard!

She might hold the record for most "ah's" in single class period. The class should be called spelling class, since she spells everything out for you like you are in elementry school. Very boring and not worth time showing up, except for the quizzes, have fun for those about to take this class!!!
Metcalf's class is very boring and hard to stay awake in. If you attend class, read the sections of the book related to "the sheet" you'll do fine.
If you are reading this BEWARE She is boring and makes you sit in assigned seats NOT for pts You will fall asleep in a flash You must go to class or those 4 pnt quizzes will catch up with you Also good luck trying to figure out whats on the test she doesnt tell you what to read until the day of.
Professor Metcalf is a total ****. She is not grateful for her T.A.'s and her class is boring. She treats everyone like they're 3 years old and her voice over that microphone, just sounds terrible! Don't take her if you can avoid it.
She sounds like she's going to cry during lecture. She's not nice to her TA's and the TA's have to do everything for her. We talked about the last supper like 2 wks. I wouldn't take this class unless you have to or at least not with this professor. Lots of in class quizes which r worth only 4pts.

Metcalf tends to ramble, but this is a very easy MGM class. Attending is important because the short movie quizzes will effect your grade. Exams are easy if you read about the artists and key terms. Slighty boring, but good for the GPA. A great class to finish work for other classes in.
It was a very easy course. If you are somewhat interested, it's not bad. If you aren't you might want to rethink taking this class. Se has spontaneous quizzes, only worth 4 pts, but they affect your grade greatly.
it is a lecture class. tests are always multiple choice and are easy if you study some. teacher is older and can get crabby if people are talking or being loud.

This class was a joke. I can't say how bad it really was! Don't ever take this class, her voice is shakey and monotone. Everyone i sat by hated the class. Everyday lectures on the same subject...over and over again. Yet ur supposed to know the entire book for tests. It's a joke.
Boring class. Don't recommend her if this isn't your field of study. Quiz worth only 4 pts and doesn't let you know what will be on the exam nor final, so just wait till the day of. Also have an assigned seat which doesn't count toward any e.c. pts but the quiz will tell wheather or not you're there
WOW! What a bad professor. I can't say enough bad things about her. Do not take this class if you think you're going to fly through it. Test are very difficult. You have to make it to every class and study at least 3-5 hours to expect a decent grade. I would NOT take this professor!!!!!
Knows what shes talking about, but very boring. Spent 3 weeks on one painting, got very behind in syllabus. Makes you study too much for just one test. Seems like she makes the TAs do all the work. She sounds like shes going to cry when she talks. Not hard to get B or C, but dont expect an easy A.
This class was so boring; however, I got A's on all my test. Just read the book and you'll do fine. And there are a bunch of stupid quizzes but if you do them, you will get all the points.
If at all possible, take Dr. Weston's Class instead! You will more likely stay awake and be more interested. Weston also has better stories and doesn't drag on and on.
I love art, I hated this class. She was very unclear and made art unenjoyable!!! Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to. It's easy if you can stay awake in her class and if you read the material thouroughly. I managed a B and fell asleep every day!!
Very boring in class.
This class is completely boring! She makes you sit in assigned seats in an auditorium! Not that you get any points for being there but the TAs take attendance everyday. It's very hard to stay awake and she just doesn't make it interesting.
This class is a piece of cake. As long as you go to class and actually take notes and read the chapters you should get an A. There are little 4 pt assignments on speackers and videos but they aren't hard at all. There are 2 outside of class writing assignments but those are pretty easy as well.
The class is ok. She can be really annoying and her jokes are never funny. Her voice is fluttery and it can be hard to listen to. If you take this class my only advise would be to go to every class. She gives out random quizes that can really effect your grade.
This is an easy A if you go to class and take minimal notes. There is a tiny bit of reading required, not much. Buy the book and go to class and you are ok.

I can see how some people would hate this class, it could be pretty boring and Metcalf could be annoying. I thought it was interesting and awesome- not too hard...study guides for tests rock.
To start off the semester, parts of her syllabus are unclearIf you have a question, don't even bother asking because the snotty reply you'll get isn't worth it, Try to ask a classmate first, second, and 200th, before going to her. I took the class online, maybe it's easier on campus. Good luck either way if you get stuck with her!
Dull, dry, and BORING
Wish I would have never taken the class. Good class to sleep in but when it comes to the tests they suck. Give a good study guide but wants you to learn to much. If you are not into art do not take it.
Worst class ever. It's impossible to stay awake. She's an unconfident, incompetent dumb ****. She should be fired. She's robbing the students and university. Most people either don't go or can't stay awake, and she's just keeps teaching like she believes she is doing a good job. She is brutal. Sadly, if you want a decent grade you need to show up
Wow! I read comments on facebook before taking her and a green face doesn't discribe her on the other hand I don't even think a sad face would do it she is horrible! If u have the opportunity take it with someone else. And try not to take in the morning she will put u right back to sleep. Tests are hard and pointless!

I needed an art class, so I decided to take a chance on a class that sounded interesting... big "oops" on my part. She has no idea how to grade papers... we did a research paper that was 90% personal opinion! Bah...

This is the worst class ever! Metcalf has a very shaky voice and is repetitive. You would think this class is an easy A, but it most definitely is not. I usually am a B-C and I am failing the class. To do well in the class, always show up and study hard for the exams! I don't recommend taking this class if you aren't very interested in art.
Don't take this class if you can help it!!!! Horrible. She has to most shaky voice that will drive you crazy....I had her in the mornings and usually would end up falling back asleep. Awful class
I'm normally an A student... after working my butt off I only pulled a C in the class. Maybe a background in art helps you in her class, but it's tough.
Lynn may have a shaky voice and dry at times but she is very passionate about art and a very effective prof if you listen. I have aced every exam and i have had her 3 times. I would highly recommend her for art history. she is a hard grader, but if you put the time into it, it will definately pay off.
I loved this class and this teacher! She has traveled all over the world an has seen or been to half the works we learned about. I had little to no interest in art, but I still found the class fascinating. Tests are kind of hard, but if you pay attention in class and follow the outline she gives you, you'll be fine. I would take it again!

Dr. Metcalf does the best she can with an oversized class of first year students who have no interest in art. I thought she did well. The tests were fairly graded and the lectures and art interested me. I learned a lot because I cared enough about my education to stay awake.
Metcalf is really easy. She tells you what to study for the tests. If you go every day or take notes, its easy. I hate art, had no interest. I got a b+ and hardly did a thing.

I took this class online, do not do it. The 3 tests are very hard. I thought I did well but then ended up with 2 Ds and 1 C. Good thing there was a paper that pulled my grade up to a C- but it was also a 10 page paper that was not fun to do. If you have to take the class, take it in the classroom, then you might stand a chance.

This class is very boring but easy. Only three tests and one paper. Not too bad, but the it is very hard to listen to her, she spells out words for the class.

Im a A student and got a C in the class. When you look around the room during class every student is sleeping or about to. DONT TAKE UNLESS YOU HAVE TO! its not worth it.
WORST. PROFESSOR. EVER. The class literally consists of 200 people in a lecture watching slides for 50 minutes. Go to class and read the whole book... that's the only way to guarentee a good grade. The material shouldn't have been as hard as she made it.

This class isn't as bad as everyone says. It's art, most of us are 1st & 2nd yr. She does what she can. She's boring, but if you go to the lectures and take some notes you will do fine. Study the outline she gives you for test topics. The tests aren't horribly difficult, but if you decide to just "wing" this class, it will tear you up.
This is the worst class that I have EVER had to sit through. I took this class last year and got a D in it because I could not stand having to get out of bed for the purpose of sitting through her grueling lectures;her voice is constantly shaking,she LOVES to spell words out for the class like we're in Kindergarten, and all we do is look at slides!

This teacher is the worst. She's mean to her TA's, test are ment to be tricky so watch the wording. You have to go to class to do well. If you don't study for the tests you will fail for sure but if you are willing to read the book and study this class isnt bad just boring.
Simply avoid this class/professor pairing. Those in an art major will not need it, and it is needlessly painful for those looking for an easy class to fill a general requirement.
Dont ever take this class. There is a straight grading in this class. Proff is not at all understanding. Even if u get 89.99 it will be a "B grade" and she wont bump ur garde to 90 which is an A in this class...
Avoid this professor! Grade results slow (esp. for paper). Likes to play word games on test. Grades harshly. Study directions very vague. I was excited to take this course, but learned very little!
I enjoyed this class other then the time 9am is much to early for me and that fact that there were 350 people in it. There were some interesting information passed onlong. The guest speakers could have stayed home they weren't very interesting.

This class is a GPA killer. An art history major would be the only major needing this class. For a gen ed, it's brutal. In all honesty she is the most boring professor alive but you can't just leave. You have to stay just in case she springs a quiz on you or has a random speaker. Unreasonable if you talk to her as well.

I found the tests to be very difficult. The teacher was very monotone and class was uninteresting. You have to attend class everyday because of pop quizzes, speakers, and attendence. I wouldnt recommend this class...its hard to pass with a grade beyond a "C"
So I'd have to say that signing up for this class as an unknowing freshman was by far the worst decision I have ever made in college. Loopy teacher that has the TA's do everything! I feel bad for them. I use this class for my nap time in the morning. You don't have to do anything or even take notes and you'll end up with a C. Metcalf just thinks she owns everyone is the room so it gets quite annoying.
A REALLY GOOD class. Perfect fundemental art class and is great for anyone wanting a global perspective to art and culture. Metcalf is a wonderful teacher and deserves some credit. The other reviews are untrue! I think basically these people just didn't pay attention in class, if they came at all, and got a bad grade so they take it out on Metcalf.
not a very nice teacher, no cell phone, laptop, pda, or any electrical device that she feels threatened by policy, even in a class of 300 students where it's not that much of a big deal, also not very considerate, and very, very, very boring! but easy to pass.
The class is a breeze if you show up to lecture and pay attention. Otherwise if you don't read or pay attention to the slides the tests will rip you apart.

I am an Art History dork, I love it and thought I knew a lot, but I had to work for an A in this class. This is not like high school where Art is the easy A. I personally found Dr. Metcalf really helpful about letting me make up in-class quizzes (have to have documentation). If you are an Art History dork, take this class, if not, DON'T!!!!
I thought this class was pretty much pointless. I ended up pulling off an A, but I was scared the whole semester. I was upset with the amount of material that was on the last test, went over two (30 page) chapters a day the last couple day
make sure you read every part of the book, cause she picks out the little stuff for the tests.

I went to every class and took notes on everything. You don't need the notes to study but you do need the book, unfortunatly. If you only read the "featured essays" in each chapter you'll at least get a C-B on the exam. If you have an art backround the class is pretty easy.
Don't take her class, she does not make any sense. She spells out pretty much every word she says during lectures, she does assigned seats when there's 300+ students. She has an annoying raspy voice and I couldn't understand her. Avoid taking her class if you can, otherwise find another professor!

This is a college class you are expected to read the book. Show up and listen to what she has to say! Yes her voice is annoying and she spells out a ton of words that she really doesn't have to but she is passionate about art. The class is pretty easy if you just pay attention!!!
Prof. Metcalf is an excellent professor for anyone interested in art history, whether you are an art history major or not. I highly recommend her. She is a fountain of valuable information and stories. She's also very friendly and helpful outside the classroom.
(Took the class online) Must read the book. Study all the reading material mentioned in the syllabus. She pays attention to grammar and wording in the Art paper. I suggest you take your final paper to the writing center and find someone who has experience knowing what she looks for. Good luck!
when you decide to take this class, make sure that you will not miss the single word of the text book. It's 100 level class but have to give more than 400 level attention and time. So, decide it's challenge. Hope to get A when I started but soon realized hard to get it.
I took her online course over the summer.. worst idea ever. You have to practically memorize theh book, and take tests on it with no idea what specifically to study. She is clear on what she wants, but is no help to you. She will show no mercy on you. Be wary.
I took this class as fall semester 2012 and it was probably one of the hardest 100 level classes at SCSU. The entire class is based on 240 points with each of the three exams worth about 25% of your grade and random in-class assignments given out. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DON'T HAVE TO
