take this course, he's a pretty cool dude
interesting material, super easy

Great teacher, easy class, easy info
EASY class. Easy A
GREAT teacher, interesting material
never went to class just did test reviews online and got an A.
very knowledgable professor. as long as you do the online work, you'll pass the class with an A.
very smart
VERY helpful teacher and eager to accomadate students and their needs
dr. nelson is my favourite teacher so far-he knows what he's talking about, he wrote the book, and he tells us what to know. he's awesome.
Dr. Nelson is a smart teacher. As long as your an average student or better you will do well. Be prepared for mid-terms, discussion essays 2everyweek, and online lectures. If you're an average student in gneral, I see no way of getting a F in the class
dear god, this man is smart. the class is difficult only because there is a lot of material (online discussion q's every week, online lectures to listen to, a fair amount of reading, plus in-class lectures to pay attention to), but it's worth it.
Okay everyone says how easy this class is but it is ALOT of work. Essays due once a week plus lectures to listen to online plus the class lectures. If you do all the work tho its almost a guarenteed A. Plus he offers upto 6 e.c. points on your final grade
He presents things clearly and the class is interesting. The required postings and replies are enjoyable (I had fun with the extra credit, hint: review a movie!). But it must be said, if you do the online reviews, the test will be a piece of cake.
This course is a lot of work, discussions, reading, online quizzes, but he made it really great.Dr. Nelson is very clear, helpful and you can tell he loves what he does.He really got me off to a great start Wish I would have him again.Always available.
He's a great teacher. Very easy. This class is really interesting. I advise you to take him.
Good teacher, clear voice for lectures, didnt really care for the course nor the online postings but I made out w/ a B.
Enjoyed this class. Highly recommend you take it. Easy tests. Lectures are interesting. You don't have to go to the lab class(not req). Essay postings and replies every week. But they are interesting. Take the class and this teacher.
great class, easy
nice man, very smart. his class is boring but easy. he is very approachable, and incredibly smart. go to class, and sort of study and you will do fine.
Great professor. He really knows what he is talking about. There is a lot of work for this class but the material itself is extremely easy. The only slightly difficult thing is just keeping organized and on task. I recommend Dr. Nelson to anyone.
He is very boring.
cake. take him.
If you do the reading and the listenings, it shouldn't be a problem.
excellent teacher, loves what he does. Read and study... he knows the book- he wrote it! lab isn't required (not helpful either... fun and interesting class overall
he's a genious... i really enjoyed his class
You don't have to attend the lectures, but make sure you keep up w/ the work. Tests are straightforward and the online discussions are pretty basic - if you put forth an effort, you can easily get a 'B'.
Easy. Come to class and lab so you can learn the most and get your assignments done. Do the essays. They're easy. No excuse to fail if you do. Don't buy the book. You don't need it. Just do the quiz reviews. He curves every test. But he's boring and moves fast. Don't feel I learned much.
Pretty easy class to get an A or B in. You could snooze through the lectures and get an A. Just go over the practice quizzes online and do the discussion and extra credits and your all set. Also, he is a good professor with lots of experience. I recommend him.
Do the discussions and extra credits and you are pretty much guaranteed an A. The tests are ridiculously curved, however if you can memorize the "Quiz Reviews" you can do really well on the tests. No need to go to the class or the lab!
Just like everyone else says do you discussions and read the chapter review quizes and you will get at least a B. I had a B test avg. and A disscussion avg. and received and A for the class. Not to mention this was an intersession course.
you're grade will be as good as your lab instructor. some don't require attendance, but w/ the online postings REALLY DO THEM WELL!!!!! extra credit is hardcore too....it gets added onto your FINAL GRADE, not just averaged in!
i hated this class...the class was stupid...i cant remember one thing from that class...stupid labs
Class is boringgggggg, if you like to have to listen to a million audio files for a class then he is the guy for you. The class consists of one day a week for 50 mins and all the rest is online. You have to listen to his recordings to get the material. Find another teacher!
Horrible class. Not sociology at all, more political theory and international relations. all learning is done through audio files. really really hard to get used to and use to study. I would never take him again. Like I said, it's not Sociology at all, get a different teacher or take anthropology.
poor instruction. i'm sure he means well, but the teaching style is hard to follow and everything is online.... doesn't suit everyone's learning style.
Online course! All depends on the person! Class requires a great deal of discipline! He is a easy teacher just need discipline on your part! Think twice about taking!
I got a B in the class just by doing really well on the discussions. Didn't get higher than a C on any of the tests, just because I didn't study like I should have. Keep up with the online discussions because it is a lot to do at the last minute. You should not get lower than a B, its impossible.
Take him in the summer! his class is online. do the online discusions decently at least. Its tedious to listen to all of the audio lectures which requires note taking, but it accounts for 50% of test. the other 50% is VERBATIM online questions. final is easy since its the same as first 2 tests.
Nice guy, good teacher, never listened to online discussions or looked at online review questions like I wish I had and got a B. Do online essays, they're half your grade. Lab teachers grade your essays. Class isn't necessary since it's only 13/60 questions on the test but I liked what he had to say
Way too much information covered, such a wide variety of questions. However, 50 percent is the exact same quiz review questions. Lab essays are just busy work, and the online recordings are extremely boring. This guy takes 50 words to say what could be said in 5, therefore boring me to death.
Worst class I've ever taken. It's a semester of busy work. The prof doesn't teach anything he tests us on (or rather, doesn't teach anything at all), and so it's all up to the lab instructor. And if your lab instructor is power hungry and tyrannical, like mine, that doesn't work too well.
A great class, if you like to pay attention. He gives you the answers to half of his exams in online reviews. The material is interesting and applicable to all areas of life. Anyone who can't pull at least a B in this class has some serious issues with commitment to their education.
This class isn't hard, half the questions on the tests come from practice questions, and half your grade comes from online discussions that aren't hard, but do seem to take forever. This class is mind-numbingly boring, and the labs are a joke...we never, ever did anything in mine. You WILL sleep through this class.
I love this class, he has the perfect teaching style. you dont even have to go to the class because the lectures are on line, he gives you a review for every test and the questions are the exact ones that are on the test! its pretty hard to get a bad grade in this class. the discussion board was lame but it really brings up your grade.
Silly class designed for high school, not college. Easy A, though. Professor's very uptight and conservative but he gives all the exam questions in advance so you've have to be brain-dead to fail. Easy class, repeating (over and over and over) very obvious stuff. Didn't learn a thing. He likes to play with on-line stuff that is useless.
Cool guy good class not around much.
Professor Nelson's class was a good class to take for sociology. Sometimes the class got a little tedious but he always made an effort to help anyone with problems. He also gave a lot of extra credit which helped if u werent sure about ur grades. I recommend taking his class.
GOOD TEACHER~~~
A very good teacher - very interesting guy. I could listen to him talk everyday.
Good lectures- covers everything that will be on the test. Some lectures online. Dr. Nelson is very much up to date with his information- he reads everything! Then there are the lab assignments, graded by TA's... experiences there seem to vary... some people like the short writing assignments, but to me they were busy work.
Very easy A. All the lectures are online. Is not necessary to attend all lectures or labs. More than half the exam material is from the quiz reviews posted online. Dr. Nelson is a very intelligent man who is on top of current events. He is willing to help and responds to emails very quickly.
Good teacher, knows his stuff, easy to get good grades on test. Puts everything online...even in class lectures. so instead of falling asleep in class, stay in bed. It was more amusing how the 'n' on the screen gave him a mustache when he stood in front of it then what he was actually saying.
NOT AN EASY A! you do too much stuff for a 101 class. You need to listen to online lectures, class lecture, and memorize like 300 quiz review questions to do well on the test. I thought it was a relax class, but no.
The lectures suck. Even though he doesn't require attendance, you're better off going to class because trying to listen to them online is more than just a headache. Do the essays and the extra credit and MEMORIZE THE QUIZ REVIEWS and you'll get an A, guaranteed, but I will warn you, VERY BORING.
Such a great professor! A little dry, but he posts all of his lectures online, so getting an A in this course is easy!
This was a pretty easy class, but it was a headache because it was so incredibly boring. I went to class maybe twice other than the test days and couldn't stay awake. This class is good for people who skip class a lot, you don't need to go. Just do the essays well and you should get an A or B easily.
very easy A..probablly one of the easiest classes i have took so far. just listen to the online lectures and memorize all the quiz reviews he gives you. if you do all the lectures you will most likely get an a in the class. he is also very intelligant..i didnt think his class was so boring just that he had a monotone voice
Dr. Nelson knows a lot of things. Listen carefully and you'll be glad you came to class.
This class isn't too bad but it does require some effort & a little bit of work to do all the online discussions well. Go over the online study guide questions and answers he posts for the test. These will pretty much guarantee you a "C" on the tests if you read all of them. Try to make it to lecture or listen to the online ones if you want an A.
Not too crazy about this class. There is alot of different tedious things to keep up with. I guess it could be worse though. I have never been a fan of tedious memorization but I will say that if you can manage to keep up with online assignments and online lectures, and online labs-you'll be good. It's not easy to fail, getting an A takes effort
I hate this class. Going to be honest. The discussions are cake, but the tests are blah. Too much stuff to keep up with - online discussions + lectures + fishbowl + textbook (ANNOYING quiz reviews - little smiley faces going ja! da! NIEN! STUDY, STUDY!) I hate it. I just recommend avoiding sociology all together.
i dont go to class and have a B average. my advice -- don't go to class! mildly boring and so fast paced you cant keep up. also dont buy the book -- its online anyways. ALSO he looks like peter jennings.
This is class is very informative for students who have an interest in learning about inequality, globalization, and gender issues. Very informative class and everything is online so no need to come to class. Several deadlines you have to keep so dont slack, but easy class. I got an A
Easy teacher, somewhat borning but if you like that area he is great. The only way you cant get an A is if you dont study or do the lectures. He is a big curver. We had a curve on all of the test usually 9-15 points. Easy A
EASY CLASS --- do quiz reviews get at least a 70 on tests .... gives HUGE curves on tests....
Easiest class I've taken so far. Everything is so spoon-fed to you it's not even funny. Do the quizzes at the end of each chapter, those questions will appear on the tests, WORD FOR WORD. Online lectures can be boring, but necessary. Take him!
He doesn't speak very loudly, so sit in the front. A lot of the class consists of online work, even the textbook (which he wrote) is online. You don't really have to read it, just listen to the online lectures and you'll be fine. His tests are pretty easy. If you go to his class and listen to his online lectures, you'll get a good grade.
Seriously the easiest class of my college career thus far. I went to three classes - the first day, the midterm, and the final; I ended up with like a 95 average overall. He takes his test questions from the review questions and lectures that are ONLINE!, so all you have to do is memorize those answers - you don't even have to know the material!
You can't hear the man! He stands behind the podium the entire time. Lectures are so boring! The class is fairly easy though. Don't bother with reading, just study the online lectures and the practice quizes online. He has a "I am Fabulous. Do not question a god such as I" attitude.
He's really boring. If you are at all interested in Sociology dont take his class, although you might not have a choice. His class is all about Globalization which touches on sociology but for an introductory class he really does not give much of a view of the actual subject.
Class is complete cake. As long as you do the outline lectures, and study the online quizzes (which are word for word on his exams), you'll be fine. Discussions are a must, but the topics are interesting. It's basically a learn-it-yourself class. But very easy.
boring
class is veryyyyyyyyyy boringgggg... i didn't go to class at all.. having an A in there now... try to pass his tests with a D or C... but get A's on those essays for labs.. which are very easy.. then u'll have an A for hte final grade... don't be lazy lazy.. or u might end up with a D or F.. it's easyy.. just do SOME work.. then u'll be fine..
Dr. Nelson is boring, BUT, i knew nothing about sociology and i got a B. Most of the time i didnt go to class, but as long as you do the online quizzes and look over the chapter, you will be fine. Plus his curves on the test are huge...so if you need 3 extra credits...i would say go head and take him
Come to class, and the class isn't really hard at all. Make sure you stay on top of your work for the lab portion too, because that's a pretty big part of the grade. Not that hard, I recommend this class, easy A.
BORING. don't waste your time going to class, u won't be able to hear him anyway. essays are easy, just make sure you actually answer the question and DO A REPLY. if you want a B, do the practice quizzes. if you want an A, do that and listen to online lectures. curve=real big. don't waste your time with the lab, only on fishbowl disscussion days.
TAKE HIM! Great Prof. &you learn alot! Class attendance not mandatory-listen to lectures online-is a must for Tests, and not all that bad. Do the outlines for lectures while you listen online, review the questions online (EXACT ?S ON THE TEST), go to the FEW meets of your lab and you are GUARANTEED AN A+(no excuses if you don't) in this class!
Very boring teacher. He simply stands and talk in a monotone voice. It's a classic stereotypical college class that will put you to sleep. The labs can help clear up what babble he says during lecture.
OMG!!-NOooo! He sucks! If I knew he'd be sooo boring I never would've signed up for his class. You're tested on book material, lectures, and films/videos, which is pretty straightforward, but he talks so fast in class it's hard to catch everything. Worst of all, he basically whispers, while using a microphone--WHO DOES THAT?? Don't take him!
I love him even though I could fall asleep. He is so passionate about what he does, and that makes it so worth taking him. His socy class is the same way. His tests come from lecture and some of the book. He gives you a study guide and do that to get an A. He also gives extra credit and adds that to your final grade. SO passionate and amazing
I could not pay attention at all during this class. Far too boring. He speaks in a very monotone voice and does nothing to really interest students. The labs helped (a bit) but I still wound up withdrawing because I just couldn't cut it. Make sure to do the online lectures and keep on track with the assignments.
I've had him for socy 101 too and that is why i took this class. Yes he can be a little monotone but heis very intelligent and makes for an easy A. assignments and tests are very clear. Tests are directly from his study guide.. Just do the work and stop the complaining like all the freshmen from his socy101 class before! it's college! suck it up.
Pretty easy intro class. Tests are exactly from book and notes. Lectures are somewhat boring but not mandatory. Easy A if you dont mind studying some and responding to some online work. Take him....i think you have too.
He's a nice guy, but taking notes is rather hard because he tends to give you the roundabout. The class itself is tedious, but not too hard.
Class=boring. He's a smart guy, but very soft-spoken and monotone. Class attendance is not necessary, except that he puts some questions from his in-class lecture on the test. Do well on the discussions (don't forget to reply), attend the fishbowls, study the online quiz reviews (exact same wording on the test) and you'll be fine.
BORING. huge test curves. no point in going to in class lectures, he strays WAYY to far off point and you cant barely hear him. no need to go to lab unless you are in the fishbowl discussion for the extra 5 points... just make sure when youre there to comment on what is being said. study=do quiz reviews and look over chapter.
Socy 101 was the easiest college course I have ever taken. I never went to lab except for the fishbowl discussions. I emailed my essays to my lab instructor before they were due and I got A's on every one of them. The test questions over the chapter readings are taken directly from the quiz reviews. He speaks softly and give major curves.
This is by far the easiest class I have ever taken. Everything you need to know is online. You do four 3-5 paragraph essays, four one paragraph responses, take 3 test in which the questions and answers are word for word on the course site.Showed up twice, went to sleep both times. And got an A. Everything is fed to you with a silver spoon.EASY A.
His class is so easy, take him if you want an easy A, his lectures are kinda boring b/c he's really monotone, so it's also easy to fall asleep, but still go to lectures. Also make sure you put some effort in discussions. Also, he recycles his questions so find someone who's already taken this class before and try to get their tests if you can ;)
I'm not going to lie, when i did go to class i slept. Very boring, wonderful guy. He does love what he lectures but it's so boring. Lab classes are a complete joke. This is such an easy class. tests are pretty easy and the labs are so easy.
A little Bob Dole-like, but very informative. Online lectures are very helpful and provides outlines for his in class lectures. Great to take along with Cultural Anthropology.
tests are killer
how many ways can i say BORING?!?!?! i fell asleep amost everytime i went to his class. the work isnt really hard but its not enough work. so if you do bad then it has a very high effect on your grade.the book is online.when its time for the test you can take the practice test online and the quetions would be on the test word for word. along with h
This guy is nice, but he's so boring. Everyone fell asleep or quit coming. The exams were hard - class average was a 64. He grades with a curve though, so you get extra points. I didn't learn anything except who wrote what books. (Which are the main questions on the exams.) The online discussions (essays) were interesting though and a good idea.
Professor Nelson is such a sweet man. His face brightens my day. I have had him twice now & he is definately the most interesting lecturer I've ever had. I can understand how he can be a little boring, but just listen to what he is saying; which is usually about Russia & China, but very relevant to the time. Easy, just take notes on his lectures
Dr. Nelson's introductory class is sort of easy. There are 3 parts to this course. Online lectures (which are a pain),in class lectures (not mandatory), and weekly labs (I only had to go twice). Keep up with the online lectures and quiz review questions on his site. He is very nice and helpful.
Very easy, interesting material.. but very boring man. Seemed like a lot of people didn't even bother showing up to the lecture and I only had to go to lab three times the whole semester. Online lectures are just as dry. Curved all exams; I got over 100 on the first one.
His class wasn't hard @ all. College is college. In order to pass/get good grade, you must read his online textbook and you must listen to his online lectures because these are both a part of his test which also includes a lecture portion. Do these things and you should be okay. Toodles!:-)
I never went to class and still got an A. Tests are from the online quizzes and recordings. The recordings are a little annoying but DO THEM! Def. go to the Fishbowl discussions and then you're guaranteed an A!
OK LETS BE REAL YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SHOW UP TO RECEIVE AN A..JUST READ THE MATERIAL ONLINE AND LISTEN TO A FEW OF THE ONLINE LECTURES. HE IS EXTREMELY BORING AND THE SOUND OF HIS VOICE WILL MAKE YOU TIRED. TAKE THIS CLASS THOUGH BECAUSE ITS AN EASY A.
lectures are BOOOOORING! take notes, listen to online lectures, read the book and you'll most likely get an A. i only went to class and got a B. do the online discussions and go to the fishbowls. fishbowls are the easiest thing ever, and you get 5 points added to your final grade.
This man WASTED my time and money. I will never take another course with him again. His Sociology 101 course was pointless. I have no idea what the subject is about, he is boring to a fault. He will go on and on and no one understands him.
Nelson is BORING no doubt about it and this class is completely disorganized. If you are looking for help, forget it. It's about 3/4 into the semester, I've turned in 7 assignments, only have
TWO back, my TA even quit.
Very nice man, very boring teacher. It is hard to actually learn anything; he doesn't ever make points, he kind of just rambles. Hard to take notes. Quiz Reviews are the only helpful thing. Thank god he curves. Speaks too softly. I wish he would ask about actual material not about what author wrote what book about what topic.
BORINGGG. His lectures are so monotone. After awhile it kinda just all goes in one ear, out the other. BUT a plus is that he keeps in contact but his website. His book is on there, and thats where you turn in essays, and thats where are the guidelines are. So its easy just to stay connected with that website, and you'll be on task.
Such a nice man but very difficult class. He doesn't actually teach anything in his lecture. You have to teach yourself EVERYTHING from his online lectures (kinda creepy) and his online textbook. My TA this year who was saving my ass because she felt bad for us quit. I had to withdraw so my GPA didn't drop.
Really nice guy, however the lectures drag on forever. He never really has a point in the lectures, he just kind of rambles. Tests are really easy if you just visit his website.
Boring! If you do what he says and study what he says to study you pass. But it is a very very dull class
GOOD LUCK STAYING AWAKE I am a International Studies major, and the class is more International Studies oriented than Sociolgy, and this class still bored me to no end. The assignments are clear but he makes the syllabus up as he goes along. Nice guy just too quiet it was hard to get into his lectures.
He seemed like a genuinely nice guy, but this class was just excruciating. The lectures dragged on forever, and the class is a hybrid class, so you had even MORE to listen to when you came home! depsite this, I managed a good grade in this class, so its not too hard even for the completely unmotivated. I would look for a more interesting professor!
This class was very easy.I got an A. HE curves all of the exams. He has a fishbowl and if you attend then you get 5 points added to your final grade. The online lectures were pretty boring and he is boring. I went to class about 2 times.
Super easy class! He tells you how the tests are going to be structured! And he curves all tests - except for the final. Easy A!
Memorize the quiz reviews from sociologyonline.net because many of those exact questions are on the tests. The final has them also and memorize the 2 prior tests. Exact same q's plus 20ish new ones. Easy class.
Although I found his SOCY 101 class sometimes very boring, his INTL 354 class is much different. He is a great professor who not only is passionate about Russian culture and politics, but has been a part of it and lived it. He is very helpful and respectful to students. Students should respect him and appreciate him more.
Has a good sense of knowledge on what he's talking about, but boring lectures. Easy exams. Just skim over the chapters & go over the online lecture fill-in sheets. & You'll do fine.
Extremely easy class. My TA pretty much just gave away the answers to the test during the test reviews.
Dr. Nelson is a very intelligent professor and you can tell he knows his stuff. You have to subscribe to the online textbook for $40.00. The class has three exams, four discussion essays and replys. The class is not difficult and the TA's grade all of your work.
Extremely easy course. Teacher is very boring. most of the course material is available online. go to the test reviews, the ta's giveaway the answers to the exams.
look his sociology 101 class and thought that he was a great teacher. nice guy. i found the class very interesting. he knows what he's talking about. i would recomend taking his class!!
one of the most knowledgeable professors i've ever had. i learned SO much in this class! he can be a bit quiet and if you're not into russian politics you'll probably get bored but he offers plenty of extra credit. you don't HAVE to attend but it really helps! most of the reading is articles that are on the tests.
He's a really nice man. He speaks pretty quietly, so it can be hard to hear at times. He is very passionate about his subject, so sometimes seems to ramble. He posts fill in the blank notes online, so going to class is reccomended + you can get extra credit for it. Easy class if you just study!
I dreaded going to class, but it does help with the tests in the long run. Nice man. If you aren't interested in this kind of thing youll be bored to death just make sure you tough out the class and take notes and do the online reviews.
He is boring, but it seems like none of his students give him any respect during his lectures. If you don't want to come, don't, it's not mandatory. Go to fishbowls. Some of the test questions come straight from the Quiz Review part of Sociologyonline.net. The other test Q's are from online and in class lectures though.
AWFUL. The class was a dumbed down waste of time. The vast majority of the lecture was contrived of a pseudo-liberal droll, not the false kind that insecure conservatives mention for parity of noise pollution, but actual whiny, trivial, letter-to-the-editor, off-topic opining (GWB was still in office so it was partially warranted, just annoying).
Very, Very boring class. I had lots of fun in this class in high school, but got to his class, and feel that he talks about nothing. He never is enthusiasitc and is very boring, I'm sure this class would be fun if he weren't the professor. He sounds like he should be reading bed time stories to little kids, because sleeping happens a lot in his cla
Very very boring class. Only three tests and they are worth 80 percent of your grade. He seems to be a really nice guy, he just tends to go off topic and bore you to death.
lectures for 50 mins a week and listening to the audio lectures. The other part of class is going to an easy fishbowl discussion that can either lower your grade if you don't show or give you 5 extra credit points. You need his online book to post your discussion paper/reply. he also posts quizzes that he takes directly from and puts the test.
This was a lot of work for a 101 class. Have to read the book to do the quizzes that eventually end up on the test, listen to in-class lectures, listen to the online lectures, write 2 essays and 2 responses, & then attend debates out of class. In class he seems to like having discussions, but class wasn't stimulating enough to make us jump in.
His lectures are really dry. I made the mistake of wasting my time and reading the textbook for the first exam. I just took the quizzes (which are mostly common sense anyway) and just memorized the ones I got wrong. I didn't learn a single thing about sociology, but I totally ended up with an A.
LOVE THIS CLASS!!! Dr.Nelson, yes can be a little dry at times but you watch tonnes of really cool films that make class go by pretty quickly. There are only 3 exams, that are SUPERR easy! They are just straight foward questions from the studyguide. I'm a bio major not too go at histories and stuff, but I loved this class. EASY A!!
Lecture is boring but it's a very easy class. Materials come straight from the online quiz reviews, in and out of class lectures.
you can get an A/B without going to class if you just study the online quizzes & book. there is a section of questions from "in-class lecture" though. PS he curves literally every test!! pretty easy gen. ed.
Extremely dry/boring. You need to go to lecture once a week, read his online book every week (around 30-50 pages a week) and listen to online-only mp3 lectures...every week (about an hour plus in lenght).
I was very disappointed in this class. I expected it to be alot more interesting but Nelson is very boring and never usually kept me interested. I hated the method of the online textbook but I would suggest to anyone to do the practice quizzes that are there(where many of the exam questions come from).I'd look into another prof before choosing him.
Absolutely useless. Can't hear a single thing in the class, requires you to pay for access to a website he made. Your totally reliant on the lab instructor and website to get anything out of this class. DO NOT TAKE. NO STOP. DONT.
I asked a friend of mine, who was once a TA for this guy and she said, "Take him if he's your only option" I thought, okay I can deal with that.I was wrong. It is halfway through the semester and he has still not added a large amount of the class to the online roster. We took an EXAM 2 WEEKS ago and still have not received the grade. AVOID.
He's kind of old-school, meaning you have to go to class and listen to his lectures in order to do well on the tests. Overall, not so bad.
He seems like a nice enough guy but seriously do not take this class with him.You will be bored to death. He talks about nothing and just mumbles into a microphone. There is no textbook just a website he made which he never updates. The links more often than not don't work.
always skipped class, so boring and you could hardly hear him talk. 3 tests, questions come straight from his quiz reviews on the website. a good portion of the grade comes from the lab classes which i did attend. boring but easy
I feel as if this man is too old to commute every day from D.C. to Richmond. He is very smart but tries to throw WAY TOO MUCH info at you for one test. You cannot hear him during in-class lectures. The textbook is impossibly too long to read. Basically, you have to use the resources on his site to teach yourself. Why pay someone for that?
AVOID at all costs! The class has been all online. His tests consist of online lectures, inclass lectures (which you can't hear and don't make sense), and online quizzes. He never answers emails and he contradicts himself constantly. I would not take this class if you have a choice!
I'm sorry but Nelson is a terrible professor. The worst I've had so far. I'm sure he's a nice guy but he is completely inaudible in his lectures and the tests feature none of the material we go over in labs/etc. Save yourself: don't take this class.
HORRIBLEEE I dont even know my grade in this class or what the hell is going on and I go to class almost every week. All i know is our class average is a 47 percent so that cant be good. AVOID AVOID AVOID!
This professor is too ancient. He's soft-spoken in a class of 200+ and the website he bases his entire class on is constantly malfunctioning. The material taught in lab (once a week for 50 minutes) is irrelevant to the tests. He has told the same story about being robbed 3 times. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR!
You cant hear him and he makes the test hard. i hated this class!!!
This class is an easy A. There are only three tests and they all consist of questions that you can find verbatim under the Quiz Review section in the website, along with their answers. Just memorize the Q&As. Don't go to lecture, it's a waste of time. Go to lab just cuz it counts. Take another professor if you actually want to learn anything.
This is the worst class I have taken in my undergraduate experience. He is monotone, and talks about nothing relevant to what we are tested on. Every week something in the class changed. Do not take this teacher, just wait a semester and take it with someone else!!!!!
He made a class that could have been potentially interesting really dry and boring. For the majority of the semester we couldn't hear him so you really didn't get much out of the lectures most of the time. You basically HAVE to rely on the text, labs, and recorded lectures for this if you plan to succeed
I was really interested in this class but when I got there I lost all interest. showed up for the class 4 times and 3 of the times was to take the exam. I still passed with a B in that class. you can't hear anything he says. he needs to speak up and wear and mic. I would not recommend this course.
This class is manageable if you can get a good teacher aid, unfortunately i didn't. He's NOT a good teacher. You can hardly hear him and he likes to go off on random rambles. AVOID. If you have no choice but to sit up close and bring your laptop with the lecture outline pulled up and fill in the blanks. No homework. The only good thing.
This class is not hard, but it was a pain. I stopped going to the lectures b/c it was complete waste of my time (you can't hear anything he says). He is also terrible with responding to emails. I got an A in the class anyway. All you need to do is study the online quizzes and suffer through the audio lectures.
Even though I am not enjoy attend his lecture, his test is really easy. His TA is very nice and helpful. He curves a lot( 13-15 points per test) and gives extra credits. Take his class, it should be an easy A.
Professor needs to retire. Completely online class and even is audio lectures are inaudible. Rambles in lecture so the particiapant must teach themselves from the book. He does not respond to emails or telephone calls and didn't even submit final grades correctly because he didn't count all classwork into the grade as required.
Worst class I've taken in 4 years at VCU. Attendance a waste of time, since you get nothing from class considering you can't hear a single word he says. Class had overall poor test grades. Never knew what to expect on his exams, always felt very unprepared. Didn't respond to emails from beginning of semester until last couple weeks of class.AWFUL!
Awesome Proff
so i came to the first class, i couldnt UNDERSTAND a single word. complete mumbling. he has two tests.. i just recently took the first one and it was easy yy, just take the online tests, but beware theres also a "in class lecture" section on the test.ive only been to class twice and it's been two months. i'd take this class, just know what to study
You can't hear a word he says and all he talks about is Russia don't come to class but read the online textbook and do the online optional quizzes and lectures and you'll pass just fine
He'c one of those teachers that tries to relates but doesnt really achieve it...but he tries. He does try to relate things to the class and tells his personal stories in lectures. Attendance isnt realy mandatory, they never take roll but read the text book and you'll do great!
You can never understand a word he is saying in lecture. I withdrew from this class because I was scared for my grade. I had a sociology lab which I did understand(at the beginning)but then the lady teacher we had was switched to a man and then I didn't know what the heck he was talking about. :(
If you have an interest in sociology, and have a desire to learn from a sociology course, this is NOT the professor for you. While Dr. Nelson is nice, his lectures are incomprehensible because of his mumbling. My advice for getting through the course is reading the online textbook (which is very extensive) and going solo with your study time!
bad: doesn't respond to emails, old, incomprehensible, unorganized, slow. good: i did not attend one class.. i studied for the tests 2-3 days before exam day, got 86s & 88s. offers extra credit as well. EASY.. you just have to know how to handle that class. the exam questions are all online.... take him
Yes you can't hear a thing he says but this class is so easy. I got a 79 and an 83 so far. I study his quizes take notes and do his audio lectures. HE CURVES 10-15 points. I HAVE AN A. Stop complaining and go to class if you wanna do better. Sit in the front to so you can hear him. ALSO he gives a lot of extra credit. HE is not that bad. Geeze.
Absolutely the worst professor I've ever had. DO NOT TAKE HIM. This is your warning. Extremely disorganized. I learned absolutely nothing. Do not take him. For anything. Ever.
Ha this class was easy. He is not that bad of a teacher. He gives you a good chunk of the exam questions through his quizes. People take advantage of not going to class later on realizing they are doing bad because they never go. This class is easy. Our final became optional. I never aced an exam but since he curved I ended up having an A.
The class is very straight forward and almost all the test and quiz questions can be found online but there are A LOT of them. Like several hundred per test. There is a LOT of reading, and a LOT of listening to lectures online. He doesn't curve nearly as much as everyone acts, but if you do the ec you can bring up your grade a letter. I got a B.
Fantastic teacher. The class is mostly just his stories about Russia. He tells his stories without use of fancy words and complex terms, making it easy to understand and enjoyable to listen to. One of the few professors that I actually learned something from this semester. Highly recommended
Nice professor, he is helpful when you ask but can get distracted during his lectures. If you are not interested in hearing stories about Soviet Russia then do not take this class. He used up half of a lecture to tell a story that didn't even apply to the notes one time.
This class is super easy! If you get anything lower than a B, you just don't care. Honestly, the book is what you'll need for the exams. It's word for word. I got a 92 on the exam. There are only 2 exams. A midterm and a final and they are open book LOL. TOO EASY. He's like 90 years old. Attendance is not mandatory. I came to class like 5 times lol
Nothing covered in lecture had anything to do with what was on the tests,(i stopped coming about 3/4 of the way through the class). Many students stopped coming earlier. What he expected of us in the class was unclear. On his website he had a bunch of readings we were supposed to do. We never covered the readings in class and they weren't tested
He is an awesome teacher. He tells you straight up that you dont have to attend the class. You get 2 open book tests(Midterm,Final) that take a couple hours (like 6 each) but he grades them easily and thats the only thing you have to do. His lectures r pretty interesting if u do go, if u want an easy grade take his Poli109
Prof. Nelson is an absolute genuis who has loads of experience. He is a really great and really intelligent guy. However, he is getting old, so he was extremely forgetful and disorganised.
just take him
Nelson is a nice guy and I'm sure he knew his stuff, back when he could still hear. He is very old and you can't hear him even through a microphone which means class is useless. There is no curriculum (he asks you what you want to study). Overall a useless class and this is coming from a guy who loves poli sci
Attendance not mandatory. Buy and use the book on the tests. Exams are open note book and your first test take a laptop and type your exam! Do all assignments you will get an A.
Pretty easy class. Dr. Nelson is hard to hear, and confusing at times. He isn't the most organized either... His TA Jessica helps out a lot though... so if she is the TA and you're confused you should just email her. She's very helpful and definitely kept the class together. Just do the assignments and you will get an A... they aren't hard.
I respect Dr nelson, he very very knowledgeable huge piratical and social experience. The best professor i ever had kin, nice, helpful, and very easy. he wants his student to learn how to find different trusted information for different topics. Take home exams all about your opinions based on spicific reasons. JUST TAAAAAAAAAAAAAK HIM
I can't say I've learned anything out of Nelsons class and he pretty much did not grade us. The syllabus he outlined at the beginning of class was not followed at all, he waived almost every assignment except one paper grade and one test grade.
